Latest / The Craig Way Show / Gene Watson on MLB Wild Card results, Divisional Series, and Terry Francona's return
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are joined as always by our MLB insider Gene
- 0:03Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office. There. But
- 0:05before we even get to the baseball we should point
- 0:10out that what we were just talking about whatever, and
- 0:14I use the word sewer to describe it, used to
- 0:17be called FedExField.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It's got a.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Different sponsor name now where the Washington Commanders play. That
- 0:25it was a terrible place. And and Gina was there
- 0:29for that Texas Maryland game as I was in eighteen
- 0:33or nineteen, and Gina was also there the night before.
- 0:39So Gene invites me to go with him to Nationals Park.
- 0:47The Nationals are playing the Brewers, and our good friend
- 0:50Brian Anderson BA, who's you know, working for TBS during
- 0:54the baseball postseason as well, was calling that game. So
- 0:57you had a former Georgetown resident in Brian Anderson who
- 1:01grew up there and went to Georgetown High yet it
- 1:02at the time, a current Georgetown resident in Gene Watson,
- 1:06and a future Georgetown resident myself. I wasn't at the
- 1:09time but am now. So we were all there for that,
- 1:12and then Gino tells me to meet him at the
- 1:13Lincoln Memorial at ten point thirty at night.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So we do and we hang out.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And then there's the game the next day, and it
- 1:21was miserable and it was raining and I did not
- 1:23know this, but you'd let me know that you almost
- 1:25got arrested at.
- 1:26Speaker 2: That game, is that right?
- 1:27Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:28Speaker 2: I did? I did.
- 1:29Speaker 3: We had some good friends that were in the stands.
- 1:31We actually had sweet access that day because a young
- 1:36man that I helped to get into professional sports was
- 1:39the ticket manager for the Commanders and got us access
- 1:45to the suite. But I went down to see some
- 1:50friends and as you know, there was a heavy weather
- 1:52delay and we're completely underneath the awning. We're out of
- 1:56complete harm's way. It rained sideways, lighting everywhere, and the
- 2:01ushers began to come up and tell us that if
- 2:02we did not go downstairs, we would be arrested and
- 2:06find five thousand dollars.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It was very bizarre experience.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And the whole weekend, other than us at the Lincoln
- 2:15Memorial at midnight, was was.
- 2:17Speaker 2: A kind of a strange weekend. But that's a great trip, nonetheless.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was. It was also strange
- 2:24for me yet that morning, well Friday morning, before we
- 2:26got together that night that morning, yeah, it was at midnight.
- 2:30You wanted to meet at the Lincoln Memorial, right, and
- 2:32that was some sort of tradition thing you had working.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, long, long tradition. Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So that morning I actually got up. I'd flown in
- 2:41on Thursday. I got a Friday morning and went to
- 2:44have breakfast at at a Dinet or somebody recommended, and
- 2:47I was in there, and who should walk in but
- 2:48lifetime logorn Ariel Atkins, who plays for the Washington Mystics
- 2:51and the WNBA. And of course I'd called all of
- 2:54ariieals games when she played at Texas and called two
- 2:57of her state championships when she played the Dunken Bill.
- 2:59So great to Sagarette, it was a very it was
- 3:01a very strange, very odd weekend. The way it ultimately
- 3:05shook out, now the way the baseball playoffs have shaken out,
- 3:10Correct me if I'm wrong on the division. On the
- 3:13Wild Cards series, you went three and one, right, Yes,
- 3:16that's right, because she had the Astroids winning. But you
- 3:19did caution after Detroit won Game one with what they
- 3:22could do in Game two and they ended up sweeping,
- 3:25and and you you definitely called uh, San Diego winning
- 3:30and uh and then you and you called the Royals
- 3:33to beat the Orioles. You thought they would beat Baltimore,
- 3:36and uh and uh you and you and I think
- 3:40you called the Mets to beat the Brewers, didn't you.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I did?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought I thought the Mets and the Tigers
- 3:46were the two most dangerous teams. Just having been through
- 3:49that and that momentum that you get, I thought they
- 3:52were the two most dangerous teams coming into the round.
- 3:55And so they they just keep they just keep grinding.
- 3:58You just HiT's a momentum you can't explain. And it
- 4:01doesn't matter who you play, you think you're gonna win
- 4:03that day.
- 4:04Speaker 1: All right, Let's let's start with the American League. Uh,
- 4:07they're going to the bottom of the fifth in Game
- 4:09two with the Guardians and Tigers scoreless. On this now, now,
- 4:12if I remember correctly your World Series picture, the Guardians
- 4:15and the Padres, if I if I Readmber correctly, okay, Uh,
- 4:18the Guardians looked every big the part in the first game,
- 4:21they won seven to nothing handily. Right now, this, uh,
- 4:24this looks like a Matthew Boyd's pitching really well for them.
- 4:28We know scoot Ball was good, pitch very well for
- 4:30the Tigers. So it's about what we kind of expected
- 4:32at zero zero.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It is and it's just it's Cleveland. Is just they've
- 4:37been They've been through it so much. They they're probably
- 4:41the most under the radar organization in Major League Baseball.
- 4:45They know who they are as an organization. Uh, the
- 4:47way they go about acquiring players, Uh, they they've got
- 4:51their models, they don't apologize for it.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And and what.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Stephen Vote has done and kind of uh, you know,
- 4:57kind of a continuum of Terry Francona and that you know,
- 5:00they know what they were looking for and as a manager,
- 5:02and Steven is certainly one of the more you know,
- 5:06funny guys in the game. But because he has so
- 5:09much credibility as a person and as an ex player,
- 5:13he's never going to really get much pushback from any
- 5:16of the players. And they they just have their system
- 5:19and they know what they believe in and they stick
- 5:22to it. Detroit has just been such a surprise, and
- 5:26you know, this is just the beginning. And I have
- 5:29talked to aj Inch every morning for the last seven
- 5:32to ten days, and he's just so proud of what
- 5:35they've accomplished, you know, for where they were six weeks ago.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And this is only the beginning.
- 5:40Speaker 3: They're playing with house money right now, they know it,
- 5:43but it's a team that is not They're not done
- 5:46and they're going to battle you for twenty seven outs
- 5:48every game. They do need guys like Jackson Job to
- 5:53step up and come up in big situations, which hasn't
- 5:57happened yet. But very very dangerous team. And this is
- 6:00going to be a great series to the end.
- 6:01Speaker 1: If if the if the Tigers should find a way
- 6:06to win today and have it one one going to Detroit,
- 6:11does it give them a huge advantage, even though we
- 6:13could ultimately if it goes to a fifth game, we'll
- 6:15go back to Cleveland. Do you see this thing shifting
- 6:18momentum wise if Detroit draws even today, I really.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Don't, because for me, momentum is the next day starting pitcher,
- 6:25and Cleveland has such great starting pitching. And if it
- 6:28was a situation where it was Cleveland going to Yankee
- 6:31Stadium or maybe into Houston, you could say that. But
- 6:35these two teams are so familiar with each other, not
- 6:38only this season, but in the past seasons that they've
- 6:40all they've played each other so much that there's not
- 6:43going to be really much vibration from that standpoint, So
- 6:46I would say that in most cases it could happen,
- 6:48but I don't think it'll happen here. It's it's going
- 6:51to be the momentum of that starting pitcher on the mound,
- 6:53and they certainly be qualifying that department.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Talking postseason baseball with Gene Watson here on sports Radio
- 6:58AM thirteen hundreds. All right, the other American League Series.
- 7:01What a great first game for the Yankees and Royals.
- 7:05Back and forth, Seahaw, seesaw, and eventually the Yankees found
- 7:10a way to get a run in the bottom the
- 7:11eighth and they wind up winning it by a score
- 7:12of six to five. Do you see this thing going
- 7:15the distance?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Could it go five? I really don't.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I think that that New York is just so prepared,
- 7:23and they've waited for this moment. It's arguably been one
- 7:26of the best teams they've had in a very very
- 7:29long time, intangibly, the clubhouse mix as well, the personnel
- 7:33mix as well. Inasmuch as the Royals have done such
- 7:37a great job this season and and they've built so
- 7:40much momentum and they have so much to look forward
- 7:42to in the future. And look forward to Detroit and
- 7:44Kansas City battling it out for the next few years.
- 7:47Speaker 2: In that division.
- 7:48Speaker 3: And but I just think the experience and the expectation
- 7:53level of what's expected in New York is probably going
- 7:56to prevail overall. If they can get it's going to
- 7:59be Lark Smith versus Seth Lugo in Game three, So
- 8:03they really have to get tonight's game with Cole Reagan's
- 8:06on the mountain.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Did it matter much? Does it matter much?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Historically?
- 8:09Speaker 1: I've had some people ask me about this about the
- 8:13off day between Game one and Game two. It wasn't
- 8:16a travel day, just an off day. This is done
- 8:17for television. We all know that. So Game one Game
- 8:20two in the America LA, whereas Nashley went back to back,
- 8:22and then of course they have their travel day today
- 8:26before they resume the series in New York and in
- 8:30San Diego, respectively. But does it matter? Does it make
- 8:33much of a difference? Does it help anybody out of this?
- 8:36The fact that the off day comes between game one
- 8:39and Game two, and then there's another off day before
- 8:40Game three.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I think it's an enormous advantage for the Yankees because
- 8:44they're home.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's an older club.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You know, the pitchers are probably having a dinner somewhere,
- 8:52the position players are gathering somewhere, the coaching staff is
- 8:55gathering somewhere. They're they're acclimated, they're familiar with their surroundings,
- 8:59they're comfortable.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Where you have a younger club like Kansas City that.
- 9:04Speaker 3: You know, they're they're making the most of the day
- 9:06and enjoying the city and and and and getting out
- 9:09and doing things that they've never had an opportunity to
- 9:12do as a group. And so I think that was
- 9:15probably a big momentum shift for the for the Yankees tangily.
- 9:19Speaker 1: All right, let's jump to the Nation League. Before we
- 9:21get to the two series. I want to ask you. You
- 9:23mentioned Terry Francona. Tito's back in the game. It's coming
- 9:27out of retirement to manage the Reds, and of course
- 9:29he played briefly with the Reds as well. What's your
- 9:31thoughts about Francona back in baseball managing again.
- 9:35Speaker 3: You know, I was in Tucson for the Fiesta Mexicana
- 9:39until yesterday. You know, he's obviously an Arizona Wildcat, and
- 9:43three of his ex teammates were at the game. With
- 9:46me and and they were so excited. One was with
- 9:48the Reds and so extremely excited. And in an era
- 9:53where that manager means so much to an organization and where.
- 9:57Speaker 2: That team is.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I mean, they could not have landed a better hire
- 10:02for what that team and that organization needs in Tito Francona,
- 10:05and it just it's an amazing hire. It's right on
- 10:08time for them, and you're going to see a huge difference.
- 10:12Not that they were, you know, real undisciplined in the
- 10:15way they played, but just the accountability that he brings
- 10:18to the table, those little things that the day to
- 10:22day operations of managing a team.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He's just going to be enormous for them.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And look for the Reds to really be active this
- 10:29winner in major league acquisition and really try to make
- 10:32a big splash in twenty twenty five with that team.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I think it's a given that everybody feels the Dodgers
- 10:37have the best player in all of baseball obviously in
- 10:40choey Otani. But Choey is thirty years old. Who knows
- 10:42if he can come back as effectively as a pitcher
- 10:45in the future, and he will continue to swing the
- 10:46bat well, obviously, My question is this Tino. How far
- 10:51off are we from saying the best player in baseball was.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Elie de la Cruz.
- 10:56Speaker 3: It's close, and you give him a supporting cast. And
- 10:59you know, Matt mc lane was injured this year and
- 11:01that really hurt them. They had a number of injuries
- 11:03to that pitching staff. But I've said it for a
- 11:06few years and it's not a criticism, it's a fact
- 11:08that the Reds have just been laying in the weeds
- 11:11for a few years and really the only thing they've
- 11:13missed and it's not an indictment on who's been there
- 11:16before anything, but but just that credibility, that long term
- 11:21winning success and reputation that a Tito Francona brings to
- 11:25the organization is just going to be huge for them.
- 11:27And look for them to play an extremely clean style
- 11:31of baseball next year, very disciplined. But also I'm sure
- 11:34that Tito said, you know, you got to sell me
- 11:37on what your plans are going to be and what
- 11:39you're going to do this winner to build this team
- 11:41up to make us a contender, because that was probably
- 11:44a big factor in him coming back.
- 11:45Speaker 1: All right, talking baseball, here, the Major League playoffs with
- 11:49Geene Watson from Chicago White Sox.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Our MLB insidles.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Shift to the National League Storm Philadelphia, and the Mets
- 11:55must win yesterday for the Pills, don't you agree? And
- 11:58they and they found a way to get that with
- 11:59the walk off hit there from Castianos and obviously Bryce
- 12:04Harper got in the mix with the big home run
- 12:06after the Mets had built the Mets had played so
- 12:08fearlessly to this point. How about your take on Philly
- 12:12and New York as the series shifts now the Queens.
- 12:16Speaker 3: What an incredible, incredible series for Mark Viento's and the
- 12:24just to never quit that the Mets have shown.
- 12:27Speaker 2: And I'm going to tell you something.
- 12:28Speaker 3: You know, those fans have been sitting at home watching
- 12:31this team play on the road.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And now they get a home game.
- 12:34Speaker 3: And I was in there in fifteen when we played
- 12:36them in the World Series, and that is a very
- 12:39hungry fan base and it's going to be an electric
- 12:42environment where the home field crowd can really play a factor.
- 12:46But I thought the Phillies they've shown great resilience. Also,
- 12:50the expectation is a little higher there and so the
- 12:53pressure can be a little bit higher, but they certainly,
- 12:56you know, they have all the momentum with the starting rotation.
- 12:59Nick Giano's for as polarizing as he's been, you know
- 13:03over the years with his comments and his kind of
- 13:06laxadaisical play. You know, he's a money player and when
- 13:08the game is on the line, he's a guy you
- 13:10wanted to plate and he certainly proved that yesterday.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Well, speaking a Rabbit fan, basis San Diego has it
- 13:16and the Dodgers head down there, you know for all
- 13:19of that stuff. For me, Gino and you know me
- 13:23what my rooting interest is, but for me really plainly
- 13:27and simply, and I think John Smoltz has done a
- 13:29fabulous job in outlining this of her games one and two.
- 13:33This comes down to the fact that the Dodgers are
- 13:35at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to starting pitching,
- 13:38and that was on display last night.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Yeah, they've just been so injured. I mean, they've got
- 13:42seven players on the sixty day. They're hoping to get
- 13:46Brunt Honeywell back and whatever role he could serve in
- 13:49if they put him on the roster, but they've just
- 13:52been beat up so bad with the injuries. And you know,
- 13:56this is one of those situations where the pressure lies
- 13:59on them a little greater than it does the Padres,
- 14:02and you're just seeing things from the San Diego Padres
- 14:05that we've never seen. You've got the Robert Merril rookie
- 14:08who people don't realize is truly the leader in that clubhouse.
- 14:12Speaker 2: He's a young.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Player, Rookie of the Year candidate, and he is truly
- 14:16leading that clubhouse and holding that clubhouse accountability.
- 14:20Speaker 2: But then you look at what Manny Machado.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Did last night and bringing that team together in the dugout,
- 14:25and when you know you've got all those fans in
- 14:28your face and you've been there, I've been there many times.
- 14:32Television does not do justice for how difficult Dodger Stadium
- 14:37is to play in. And that was a very very
- 14:39dangerous scene last night in the outfield. I don't think
- 14:42people realize how dangerous it was for Jerks and Profar
- 14:46and Manny Machado stepping up and leading. We've never seen
- 14:50anything like that ever before. And so you're seeing all
- 14:53the intangible things that kind of have held the Padres
- 14:56back over the last few years taking place right now
- 15:00out on the road, and that makes them a very
- 15:02very dangerous team along the way because Petco Park is
- 15:06one of the most vibrant, electrifying environments in all of baseball.
- 15:11And now they get to go back home. And trust
- 15:13me when I say to you, they have no plans
- 15:15of going back to Dodger Stadium.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I'm sure they want to finish it there.
- 15:18And then just one other comment on that, You're absolutely
- 15:20right it was. It was a real tent situation in
- 15:23left field of the fans that got out of hand
- 15:26out there. And then not only that, I think you'll
- 15:27agree with me on this because you've known jorks in
- 15:30profar since he played for the Rangers. He's an incredibly
- 15:33emotional guy and that was a power keg. It didn't happen,
- 15:37thank goodness, and the umpires did a good job getting
- 15:39him away, but he was also really amped up, and
- 15:43that thing had the potential to get ugly.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Fortunately it didn't.
- 15:46Speaker 3: And you I don't think fans truly realize. I mean,
- 15:50when you're out there that open, in that environment, it
- 15:54is really a scary scene. I mean, I mean through
- 15:57you know, twenty five years in scouting and thirty five
- 16:00in the game. You know, our families during the playoffs,
- 16:03the World Series in fourteen. Sadly enough, in Houston when
- 16:08I was with the Braves, there can be some really
- 16:11dangerous environments for families. And when you're that wide open
- 16:15and you don't know what's sitting in the stands, and
- 16:17you've got baseballs flying at you, people are throwing quarters
- 16:20at you, people are I mean, it is really a
- 16:23dangerous scene and it can be really unnerving, and when
- 16:27you put it in the point of the game where
- 16:30it took place, makes it even more challenging.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And you darbish.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And the time that he took just to stay loose
- 16:38and warm at his age and to be able to
- 16:40perform the way he did after the long delay was
- 16:43truly incredible. And it's a miracle for what the score was.
- 16:46It's a miracle that they got out of there with
- 16:48a win.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it worked out really well, and then they got
- 16:50very very impressive with what they did down the stretch
- 16:53when they're hey, your predictions are looking good.
- 16:54Speaker 2: So far, my man, so far.
- 16:56Speaker 3: We'll see well. See, you know, we got vested interest.
- 16:59My son works for the Padres and oh, he's already
- 17:01texted me he's already tested playing to San Diego with
- 17:05our ninety eight National League championship rings and pendants, and
- 17:08so we're pulling hard for them this week.
- 17:10Speaker 1: He texted me and said, I'm going out.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Let's see the dodge.
- 17:13Speaker 1: The Padres wipe out the DoD So I said, yeah,
- 17:17expect an ass all right, Uncle Craig, Gina, thanks for
- 17:21the time.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I appreciate it. We'll do it again soon, all right, guys,
- 17:24I'll take care of all right.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Gene Watson x in with us periodically now during the playoffs,
- 17:29uh more than once a week if the situation war.
- 17:32And so we'll see how this week uh develops there
- 17:34with both the American.
- 17:35Speaker 2: League and National League Division series.
- 17:37Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Long Wort's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
- 17:40coming up on Sports Radio AM thirteen Hunderd The Zone
