- 0:01TV show The Good Doctor has been getting a lot of controversy
- 0:04around autism because of some memes falling out of the
- 0:06Internet. Let's get into guys, Welcome
- 0:08back to the world. My name is Dan and I have autism
- 0:10and ADHD. Make weekly videos all about
- 0:12this stuff. So if you're new around here,
- 0:14make sure to hit the subscribe button down below, guys.
- 0:17So I've been seeing loads of memes about the good Doctor on
- 0:20the Internet and I thought, OK, whatever, you know, and they're
- 0:22related to this TV show and the TV show was called the Good
- 0:24Doctor. Now the Good doctor is a show
- 0:27that is portraying the life of a young medical director or a
- 0:32physician who is on the autism spectrum but is high gifted,
- 0:35highly talented and he goes to this hospital and he's like just
- 0:39really good at what he does. However, the show features the
- 0:42main character who has these doctor skills and he has, you
- 0:45know, social interaction mannerisms that are kind of
- 0:47unique and and and subject to kind of autism.
- 0:50Because in it they talk about him being on the Austin
- 0:53spectrum. But then some of the
- 0:54characteristics obviously are not all the characteristics with
- 0:57autism and not everybody with autism will display like this
- 0:59guy. However, a lot of the memes have
- 1:02been coming out basically saying that the stereotypes of autism
- 1:06are being kind of damaged because all it's damaging the
- 1:08autism community that the stereotypes of autism are coming
- 1:11out in memes like the how he cries or how he out outbursts or
- 1:14how he has emotional, I don't know, like you know, meltdowns
- 1:16and stuff like that. Some of the individuals from who
- 1:19are autism advocates expressed their concerns about the memes
- 1:23pushing the stereotypes and the trivializing changes faced by
- 1:26people with autism. I'm basically saying that like
- 1:28because autism has very serious implications and has very
- 1:31serious issues with like meltdowns and burnouts and
- 1:33things like that. By creating memes out of those,
- 1:37you kind of delegitimize the the issues and struggles of people
- 1:40on autism kind of go through. And I kind of get it.
- 1:42I get what I'm trying to say. At the same time, I think it's
- 1:44just a meme and it's kind of like throwaway.
- 1:46But I can understand how that would kind of be detrimental to
- 1:50somebody and how somebody could take that really offensively or
- 1:52somebody could just take that and feel quite you know, down
- 1:54about sort of making fun of their their condition.
- 1:57Now whatever the the scope is, I think what this is doing is
- 2:01raising awareness of the show the good doctor, which I think
- 2:03is pretty decent. It's a good show and by doing
- 2:06that you're raising awareness of autism and people becoming more
- 2:08understanding of the issues that autism people face.
- 2:10So I. Think there's good and bad on
- 2:12both parts of this. I think it's good for outreach
- 2:14and good to. Spread the message of autism.
- 2:16But I think maybe the way it's being handled is is is
- 2:19difficult. So maybe we should start good
- 2:22campaigns for autism and unhappy campaigns for autism, showing
- 2:24how kind of you know the struggles are real and the
- 2:27struggles are really difficult for us.
- 2:28I would love to know your comments.
