- 0:35Speaker 1: I T E dot com. Welcome to the show today.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Krinn is among other things, well, no, she's only doing
- 0:45Speaker 1: one thing. Among other things that will happened on today's
- 0:48Speaker 1: show is Krinn. You will be able to listen to
- 0:52Speaker 1: Karinn unless you're on YouTube that you can watch it happen.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Does she got a camera at her phil? Yeah, you'll
- 0:57Speaker 1: be able to listen to and or watch krinn less.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Her first coyote huge flaws?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Is that like a homemade Ulu?
- 1:09Speaker 1: There the homemade Who I did not make this. I'll
- 1:11Speaker 1: tell you about it in a minute. Uh, Trien, did
- 1:14Speaker 1: you grow up calling them coyotes?
- 1:17Speaker 3: Wiley?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Okay, now that you've got one, you'll switch. I found
- 1:21Speaker 1: that people, Yeah, people that say coyote have likely gotten one,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and people that say coyote, haven't.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I say coyote? Does that track?
- 1:33Speaker 1: I code switch? There's a number of tools here that
- 1:38Speaker 1: she's gonna be doing in my she's gonna I'm reluctant
- 1:43Speaker 1: to let her use this. This is a a dexter.
- 1:46Speaker 1: This is an assemble draw knife or flashy knife people.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You know, you might call it necker knife. This is
- 1:52Speaker 1: a good way for you to put a hole in that.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But I'm gonna let you use the backside. So this
- 1:58Speaker 1: is your cutting edge. Okay, this is your pushing edge.
- 2:05Speaker 1: You're allowed to use the pushing edge. The cutting edge
- 2:07Speaker 1: you'll have to spend more time figuring out on.
- 2:09Speaker 5: And for listeners, it's a sixteen inch blade with a
- 2:13Speaker 5: draw knife, handles at both sides.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yourself, yourself a new mental tape.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Kind of looks like a machete with a handle on
- 2:20Speaker 2: both ends.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Don't boom. It's like a ninja sword. Yeah, it's a
- 2:25Speaker 1: ninja sword. Cut it in half and put a handle
- 2:28Speaker 1: on the other end of the blade. M hm, katana
- 2:32Speaker 1: Is that what they call them?
- 2:33Speaker 5: Oh that's the traditional yeah, yeah, curved blade.
- 2:36Speaker 1: You know, I highly recommend for parents speaking of ninja swords.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Is nunchucks. No, man, we have more fun throwing stars.
- 2:44Speaker 1: We buy ninja throwing stars. You can't buy them on Amazon.
- 2:48Speaker 1: You have to go to ninja supply houses. But we
- 2:51Speaker 1: go to online ninja supply houses and buying ninja throwing stars.
- 2:54Speaker 1: There is nothing more fun.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Did you ever make them out of sheet metal?
- 2:58Speaker 4: Class?
- 3:00Speaker 1: You never could make anything that was as good as
- 3:01Speaker 1: what you can buy.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Still fun, but kids safe ones at Costco. Now there
- 3:06Speaker 6: throwing stars?
- 3:07Speaker 2: No, sorry, Were they made out of belcrow or something?
- 3:11Speaker 6: I couldn't tell you what they're made out of?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Little plastic.
- 3:16Speaker 6: If it's not a throwing star, I'm talking eight in
- 3:19Speaker 6: the shape of a star.
- 3:19Speaker 1: We like seven and eight point four star ninja throwing star.
- 3:24Speaker 1: A four point ninja throwing star means that halftime it
- 3:27Speaker 1: don't do anything. You get an eight point ninja throwing star,
- 3:31Speaker 1: that's some bitch is gonna stick.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You're a big block of wood, big round of wood
- 3:35Speaker 2: out here.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah. We took a big slab of cottonwood and I
- 3:39Speaker 1: hung it from chains. So you know, like a swing
- 3:41Speaker 1: set has those angle the supports like saw leg style things.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I put a s or an eyebowlt up on that
- 3:51Speaker 1: on the on the saw horse legs of the swing set.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I put an eye bowl so I could suspend a
- 3:56Speaker 1: cottonwood stump. They dry out and fall apart, but you
- 3:59Speaker 1: put that cotton would stump up. And then next very
- 4:02Speaker 1: important step that is such horseshit. Yeah, what come.
- 4:08Speaker 2: On, kids?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Safe? It's like a nerf bow. Yeah. So no. The
- 4:15Speaker 1: next step that's very important is you take all these
- 4:18Speaker 1: throwing stars you just purchased, and you spray paint them
- 4:21Speaker 1: blaze orange.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I was just gonna ask if you had any get
- 4:24Speaker 2: sucked up in your line.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It's like M I A and it's blaze orange.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Oh you don't like put up a carpet backstop or something.
- 4:33Speaker 1: No, I paint them blaze orange. One. I don't. I'll
- 4:35Speaker 1: never understand what happened to it. We've taken the metal detector.
- 4:37Speaker 1: We can't find it. Blaze orange Ninja throwing star missing.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Did they practice from different positions, you know, like kneeling?
- 4:46Speaker 1: No, I've showed them. You know, we do it like
- 4:48Speaker 1: you hold it like you're pinching it between your thumb
- 4:51Speaker 1: and the main knuckle on your forefinger. And I was
- 4:54Speaker 1: telling them that in Ninja movies. I don't really know
- 4:56Speaker 1: what the move is, but they kind of got like
- 4:58Speaker 1: a they do. They're like they kind of got like that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It's like they're doing it. I don't know, they got
- 5:03Speaker 1: their fingers out.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Spiderman Stuck's like this. It's like, yeah, they're like they're
- 5:07Speaker 4: they're like palming it almost, and then they.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Is that what they're doing? Yeah, I don't know how
- 5:12Speaker 1: Oh they're palming it.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and then it's sort of like a frisbee move.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I think like a discus yeah, or there's between the fingers,
- 5:20Speaker 4: but I think that's more for style than substance.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember there was a ninja movie and they
- 5:24Speaker 1: when they're training, they had that string with a weight
- 5:28Speaker 1: on the end, and you'd have to pin that string. Man.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But the problem is, you're never gonna kill anybody with
- 5:33Speaker 1: a ninja throwing star. And this is coming from a
- 5:35Speaker 1: guy that owns something.
- 5:36Speaker 2: The old movie is just like dude would get hit
- 5:38Speaker 2: and he'd just fall over dad.
- 5:39Speaker 1: But yeah, right in the chest. What would really happen
- 5:42Speaker 1: if you hit someone with the ninja throwing star? They're
- 5:44Speaker 1: gonna go, oh, that's probably what I've got a one
- 5:49Speaker 1: inch cut. I love what else? The other two we
- 5:54Speaker 1: have here. Tyler Friel, who's been on the show before,
- 5:57Speaker 1: made this Ulu knife. You know, it's cool as ship.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So I'm hold up with Ulu knife right now. He
- 6:04Speaker 1: made he said it an antler single bevel.
- 6:10Speaker 7: Man.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We we're this project I'm working on that. I haven't
- 6:12Speaker 1: been able to talk about what it is. We were
- 6:16Speaker 1: We actually filmed with Mett and Aaron from the Kent
- 6:21Speaker 1: State Archaeological Experiment Lab. And he made an Ulu with
- 6:27Speaker 1: an obsidian blade. And you see that and hold that
- 6:32Speaker 1: in your hand, and you immediately understand the evolution of
- 6:36Speaker 1: the Ulu knife.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Doesn't it have a handler, It's just a chunk of rock.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It's got the same handle and betted into it as
- 6:42Speaker 1: a big obsidian blade. And you're like, oh, that's where
- 6:46Speaker 1: Ulus came from. One hundred percent. Man Krim might be
- 6:49Speaker 1: using this Ulu. I don't know. I don't know what
- 6:51Speaker 1: she's what. I don't know what. You're not going to
- 6:54Speaker 1: get that off, matter, don't take that off. Don't take
- 6:59Speaker 1: it off. Let me explain. Let me explain where we're
- 7:01Speaker 1: at on this kyote fleshing project. Uh I okay. Stu
- 7:08Speaker 1: Miller the fur handler and trap er. Stue Miller, I
- 7:11Speaker 1: fleshed cool or I fleshed some kyotes with Stew Miller.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Stu Miller traps in southern Illinois. He fleshes his kyotes down, clean, clean, clean,
- 7:23Speaker 1: down to the leather. I was curious about how like
- 7:28Speaker 1: cause I hear different ways and like Mercer Longing would
- 7:32Speaker 1: not flesh them all the way down. I asked Mercer,
- 7:34Speaker 1: I said, how clean do does when you send it
- 7:37Speaker 1: into a tannery? Not for the fur trade, but you
- 7:40Speaker 1: do it the same way, so this is fur trade
- 7:41Speaker 1: or not? Well, as we're talking, you can they see
- 7:45Speaker 1: that kyote that's on that board. Yeah, that that kyut
- 7:49Speaker 1: on the board for instance, that would that's prepared in
- 7:51Speaker 1: a way that it would be suitable for the fur trade,
- 7:55Speaker 1: or it would go to a tannery just like that
- 7:58Speaker 1: off the board. And I asked Mercer, I'm like, hey,
- 8:01Speaker 1: how if you're if you're sending the kyote to the tannery,
- 8:04Speaker 1: how clean do you flesh it? And he had the
- 8:06Speaker 1: brilliant idea of he said, why don't you call the tannery?
- 8:10Speaker 1: HM never would have occurred to me. I called the tannery.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I said, how do you like coyotes? They said, excess fat,
- 8:20Speaker 1: excess muscle, and did they give you I knew what
- 8:26Speaker 1: they meant, Well, what do they mean?
- 8:28Speaker 2: What I'm having heard now, I'm saying, like why did
- 8:31Speaker 2: they prefer them that way?
- 8:33Speaker 1: So you don't overdo it? I think that you're that
- 8:35Speaker 1: you're taking it all off. And now they have these wheels,
- 8:39Speaker 1: these kind of like they have these wheels that they
- 8:41Speaker 1: can thin the leather with anyways if they need to.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But there's got to be other critters where you're trying
- 8:46Speaker 2: to get.
- 8:47Speaker 1: There's a lot of stuff that's clean. A raccoon is clean, right, yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 1: like a muskrat. You leave the saddle, like right now,
- 8:54Speaker 1: krim's on the saddle. Pinch that little thing there.
- 8:57Speaker 3: It feels like it's not doing anything.
- 8:59Speaker 1: That's like a saddle. Just cut the take take the
- 9:02Speaker 1: take this flat tail, the final tool a m CAC
- 9:07Speaker 1: flattail made by a man who sat right where Brody's
- 9:10Speaker 1: sitting one time. Take the flat tail and cut that
- 9:13Speaker 1: way like you're like you're cutting the diaphragm out of
- 9:16Speaker 1: deer and you're gutting it. That's kind of a weird
- 9:19Speaker 1: way you're doing that.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Do you want to.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You got it? You got it. That's the saddle on
- 9:27Speaker 1: a muskrat, you leave the saddle on. On a mink,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you leave the saddle on, and a red fox you
- 9:31Speaker 1: leave the saddle on, and a raccoon the saddle comes off.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Beaver clean, nothing gets left on. And a kyo. I
- 9:40Speaker 1: think they used to do them clean, but they told
- 9:42Speaker 1: me don't do it clean. H So that little membrane there,
- 9:46Speaker 1: but you see down when she gets down by the
- 9:48Speaker 1: the teats, that's a female, right. Oh, she just put
- 9:52Speaker 1: a damn hole in it.
- 9:53Speaker 4: No, not yet, not yet, okay, damn it.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Excess fat and excess meat cameras are a This is
- 10:00Speaker 2: the worst case scenario for someone doing this to a
- 10:03Speaker 2: kaya for the first time.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Oh so a lot of pressure. Oh, you at the
- 10:08Speaker 4: table and three cameras pointing thet here.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The Meat Eater Cyber Monday sale. This is your last chance.
- 10:15Speaker 1: This is your last chance to take advantage of the
- 10:16Speaker 1: Cyber Monday sale first like FHF gear Phelps, game calls,
- 10:21Speaker 1: Dave Smith decoys, and the Meat Eater store. Uh okay,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it shuts off at eleven fifty nine PM. What time
- 10:32Speaker 1: zone like if you're gonna get that specific, Oh, it
- 10:35Speaker 1: probably rolls. It probably rolls.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And Hey, Kret, you've got no mics. You
- 10:41Speaker 4: gotta use your outside voice whenever you say it.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I think it would on your IP address soon now
- 10:48Speaker 1: eleven fifty nine tonight. Don't be trying to shop at
- 10:52Speaker 1: midnight too late fifty up to fifty percent off until
- 10:58Speaker 1: eleven fifty nine tonight. I would like I challenged someone
- 11:02Speaker 1: to try and make a purchase at eleven fifty nine
- 11:05Speaker 1: and thirty seconds and bye.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And by tonight we mean December second?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Is that what this is?
- 11:12Speaker 4: Correct?
- 11:13Speaker 6: Monday to December second, Monday.
- 11:15Speaker 1: December mountain time, up to fifty percent off First Light gear,
- 11:19Speaker 1: So like yeah, first Light Gear, FHF Gear, Felts, game calls,
- 11:25Speaker 1: Dave Smith decoys. Go to first light dot com and
- 11:28Speaker 1: do all your shopping there. Have you covered our tools? Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 1: we got the uber knife, we got the flat tail.
- 11:34Speaker 2: What's that black handle thing there?
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah? Oh little honer, I got you, little honer. So
- 11:44Speaker 1: does that a lot of feedback? This is one of
- 11:48Speaker 1: those things that continues. Oh, I was gonna say something
- 11:50Speaker 1: else that was gonna talk about.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Was it as tombots, no trapping, our first stuff, don't
- 11:59Speaker 2: show up.
- 12:00Speaker 1: At eleven fifty nine, don't shop at eleven fifty nine.
- 12:04Speaker 4: No, don't get them wet, don't feed them.
- 12:06Speaker 5: After, don't take too much stuff off the coyote, the saddle.
- 12:11Speaker 6: Ft up shitters calendars.
- 12:14Speaker 1: No, Cory's a great calendar. Corey is a good company man. Here,
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's a great calendar. There. Dale was talking about it,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and I dreamt up about the calendar with Santa Claus
- 12:24Speaker 1: in it.
- 12:25Speaker 6: I might have to walk that one up the ladder
- 12:27Speaker 6: if you're cool with that.
- 12:28Speaker 1: No, it's a phenomenal idea. Yeah, Randalls needs to play Santa.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I would love to.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Yeah, perfect, I would love to consider it done.
- 12:36Speaker 1: On a recent episode, we got the feedback keeps coming.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I remember there was a there's been other subjects in
- 12:42Speaker 1: the history of the show where where it just kind
- 12:45Speaker 1: of kept going, you know, you like, you cover something
- 12:49Speaker 1: and then there's feedback, and you cover the feedback, and
- 12:51Speaker 1: then the feedback gets.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Feedback, sometimes for years, and the feedballbrates.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It becomes what might be called a feedback loop of feedback,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and it never ends, and then I'll say this is it,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and then a while later we'll cover it more and
- 13:07Speaker 1: eventually it'll die. So here we go again. On the
- 13:11Speaker 1: show we covered pre chewing food for your children, in
- 13:17Speaker 1: particular that when our kids, we have three of them,
- 13:20Speaker 1: when our kids would get to be nine months old,
- 13:24Speaker 1: I would chew up deer meat and I'd give them
- 13:27Speaker 1: the chewed up deer meat and they would eat that,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and I would say his first thing ever was that
- 13:31Speaker 1: deer meat or something to that effect. And we were
- 13:34Speaker 1: talking about pre chewed deer meat, and uh, we had
- 13:38Speaker 1: follow up from Dirkin Pat Durkin talking about eating pre
- 13:43Speaker 1: chewed meat. Our kids all eate pre chewed meat. And
- 13:47Speaker 1: we have some feedback, including feedback from a a dds.
- 13:53Speaker 1: What does that mean, doctor Rental, it's a dentist actually.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Doctor of dentals, surgery science.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Oh do you know Dennis all kind of stick together
- 14:03Speaker 1: in a weird little way. Well, I mean, does that
- 14:06Speaker 1: surprise doctor of dental. Do you guys remember when we
- 14:08Speaker 1: had it My Dennis came on the on the show. Yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 1: great guy that goat killer, Yeah mountain Maybe I have
- 14:15Speaker 1: the only dentnis in America who's killed ten mountain goats. Well, well,
- 14:19Speaker 1: because he grew up in Southeast Alaska, they'd get off
- 14:22Speaker 1: school and go goat hunting. It's like, yeah, like why
- 14:26Speaker 1: you might go like hunt for an evening for white tails.
- 14:28Speaker 1: When he was growing up, you'd go hunt goats after school. Uh,
- 14:33Speaker 1: only Dennis in America like that. He came out on
- 14:36Speaker 1: the podcast. I can't remember if he won. He did well, Yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 1: he won. I believe he won in overtime. Actually, and
- 14:42Speaker 1: he just fixed my daughter's hockey helmet. Really, it's like
- 14:46Speaker 1: he's trying to one up me. Did he six another
- 14:50Speaker 1: man's daughter's hockey?
- 14:51Speaker 5: Did he have to use a particular dental instrument to
- 14:54Speaker 5: do that?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Or is he just a helmet guy? He texted me
- 14:57Speaker 1: and let me know he fixed.
- 14:58Speaker 4: My daughter's Steve, you know, Yeah, and he's also a doctor.
- 15:02Speaker 4: And then we know how Steve feels about that.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so he's all built up now. He thinks he's
- 15:06Speaker 1: the man. Yeah, he's a doctor. He's a dentist. He
- 15:09Speaker 1: fixed my daughter's hockey helmet. Keep your hands off my
- 15:11Speaker 1: daughter's hockey helmet.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Did he first say something was wrong with the helmet? Like, hey,
- 15:15Speaker 6: let me see that helmet, something's wrong with it.
- 15:16Speaker 1: We've been aware of a slight problem with her helmet
- 15:18Speaker 1: for a year, okay, missing a screw that holds the
- 15:22Speaker 1: face mask on. I always think I'm going to replace
- 15:25Speaker 1: that screw and then once he tried to one up me,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I did. I went and replaced it last night, and
- 15:29Speaker 1: I asked him if he wanted his screw back, and
- 15:31Speaker 1: he texted me that the dot, to which I followed up,
- 15:34Speaker 1: you guys want to come for dinner on Monday, and
- 15:36Speaker 1: he said he does.
- 15:37Speaker 7: Great.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I think he was saving you money.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Then you guys can have your little argument about it.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna take him aside and I'm gonna be like,
- 15:43Speaker 1: what's you trying to fix my docter's hockey helmet?
- 15:45Speaker 5: You make a nicer dinner than he made the last.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Time she gets into an accident. Her jaw is coming
- 15:51Speaker 3: off her face, so he can see.
- 15:54Speaker 2: That that was graphic.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's true. You see that he wouldn't fix it,
- 16:00Speaker 1: hoping that something bad would happen. Problem.
- 16:04Speaker 5: It's like it's like a collision repair guy. You know, hey, hey,
- 16:08Speaker 5: you ought to replace those tires if he was unscrupulous
- 16:11Speaker 5: to just leave it alone.
- 16:12Speaker 1: But now I'm starting to like the guy again. I
- 16:15Speaker 1: liked him before I got all wound up on this subject.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Now back to liking them. Tighten your love nuts. So
- 16:21Speaker 1: the hell was I saying, oh, how they stick together?
- 16:24Speaker 1: So he came out on the podcast and we just
- 16:28Speaker 1: point out he's a dentist. He's on the podcast, Well
- 16:30Speaker 1: guess what other dentists contact him to offer him hunting permissions.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It's like a little like dentist, like.
- 16:42Speaker 5: I've not heard from a history PhD offering anything of value.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He got hunting, Yeah, he gets you got hunting invites.
- 16:49Speaker 1: He got hunting invites off it for being a dentist.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That's pretty solid because you know what they're like. You
- 16:55Speaker 1: know what, buddy, I understand. All we do is make
- 16:57Speaker 1: children cry. Why don't you come out and hunt my place?
- 17:00Speaker 1: You know they've been through it together. Anyways, a guy
- 17:03Speaker 1: wrote in a d a dentist rode in given his
- 17:07Speaker 1: two cents on pre chewed food, and he was pointing
- 17:10Speaker 1: out would seem to me to be totally reasonable. He
- 17:14Speaker 1: was pointing out that the quicker you can get a
- 17:17Speaker 1: little kid chewing chewy foods, not super processed ultra processed foods,
- 17:24Speaker 1: which are all if you think about ultra processed foods,
- 17:26Speaker 1: are all soft chewing, real whole foods. That's a two
- 17:29Speaker 1: handed draw knife.
- 17:31Speaker 3: I just don't want I'm being.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So down pre chewed foods. He was saying that you
- 17:41Speaker 1: got that. A child. He was saying, a child needs
- 17:44Speaker 1: to needs to have resistance training in his jaw the
- 17:48Speaker 1: same way that you get you know, other exercise muscles.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So he said, the quicker you get your child resistance
- 17:53Speaker 1: training is jaw. He'll get a beefy good jaw. And
- 17:56Speaker 1: as people switch to those little tubes that you squeeze
- 17:59Speaker 1: your food out of which their consumption has gone up
- 18:02Speaker 1: eight hundred percent. We were pointing out, but Brody pointed out,
- 18:05Speaker 1: anything that gets invited, anything that gets invented, has seasoned
- 18:10Speaker 1: explosion and growth because it didn't wasn't there before. Like
- 18:14Speaker 1: cell phones, Yeah, there's.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Been said skyrock nineteen fifties.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and when it came out with those shoes that
- 18:24Speaker 1: have five toes on them, usage skyrocket, yeah, eight hundred percent,
- 18:30Speaker 1: among other things. Uh So he had that say. Now
- 18:35Speaker 1: another guy wrote in and he's trying to okay, he
- 18:38Speaker 1: says this, I'm just gonna let him speak for himself.
- 18:41Speaker 1: In episode six twenty, this is from a gentleman named
- 18:44Speaker 1: matt Matthew. Matthew says, hi, me eater. In episode six
- 18:49Speaker 1: twenty A Max Care that was the That was the
- 18:52Speaker 1: dds's name. Letter was referenced in the discussion regarding pre
- 18:56Speaker 1: chewed food as Matt flaunted his DDS. I feel obligated
- 19:03Speaker 1: to mention that I am an exercise physiologist and nutritionist together.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Is that?
- 19:09Speaker 1: Do they get PhDs? What does that mean? I get
- 19:13Speaker 1: one of those? I don't know how you credential that?
- 19:16Speaker 1: Can you look it up? Like I just could I
- 19:19Speaker 1: have one by the end of the day. No, I
- 19:20Speaker 1: don't think so. I'm guessing it's probably a master's degree.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Well's he is, he's an exercise physiologist nutritionists. He goes on,
- 19:30Speaker 1: he is very unhappy with what this guy said. He
- 19:34Speaker 1: goes on. The idea that a baby needs resistance training
- 19:38Speaker 1: for the jaw for appropriate mandibular development is like saying
- 19:44Speaker 1: they need to do push ups so they can crawl
- 19:46Speaker 1: on time. For nearly all healthy infants, this is continuing
- 19:56Speaker 1: the letter. For nearly all healthy infants, their rate of
- 19:59Speaker 1: deve development all gets washed out by the time they
- 20:02Speaker 1: are too It's just silly fear mongering that folks use
- 20:06Speaker 1: to support their ideology and sell whatever they are selling.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Probably the most flawed of these is the statement that
- 20:15Speaker 1: breastfeeding is superior to formulating. Controversially, yeah, I have a
- 20:23Speaker 1: feeling this feedback. I've heard the breast snugly, that's true,
- 20:29Speaker 1: he goes on. Probably the most flawed of these is
- 20:32Speaker 1: the statement that breastfeeding is superior to formula. Funny, how
- 20:37Speaker 1: funny How he neglects to mention the millions of lives
- 20:42Speaker 1: saved by the advent of formula. These correlations are drawn
- 20:47Speaker 1: from the predominance of poor nutrient profile in most commercial formulas.
- 20:52Speaker 1: They are not causal in any way. For example, if
- 20:57Speaker 1: a mother is breastfeeding but she is an alcohol is
- 21:01Speaker 1: that going to be better? Is that going to better
- 21:03Speaker 1: support development than a mother who canned breastfeed and is
- 21:07Speaker 1: using a whole fat, high quality formula. Of course not.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You know, I a little bit. Take it's a little
- 21:15Speaker 1: because let me give you an example. Let's say I
- 21:17Speaker 1: said to Let's say I said I'm not feeding my
- 21:20Speaker 1: baby at all, and they're like, what's terrible? And I said, well,
- 21:25Speaker 1: or I'll feed it mercury, right, what's better? Now? Do
- 21:32Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying?
- 21:33Speaker 5: It Just like I can honestly say, that's the first
- 21:35Speaker 5: time the image of someone feeding an.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Infant mercury has ever crossed my mouth.
- 21:40Speaker 2: If they're bottle feeding them, is going to like why
- 21:44Speaker 2: he's going like way out there.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I take his point though, that like.
- 21:49Speaker 5: If most formulas are poor nutrition, you'd you know, there's
- 21:55Speaker 5: a point to be made there. But it doesn't mean
- 21:57Speaker 5: that formula by default.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Is so yes, is it okay? Is it better? I agree?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Who could argue this that he's he's he's saying this,
- 22:08Speaker 1: what's better a whole fat, high quality formula or mother's
- 22:14Speaker 1: milk from a drunken alcoholic Let me think about that one.
- 22:23Speaker 2: But we're talking about, yeah, the whole d we're talking
- 22:27Speaker 2: Come on, here I go. I think he's being a
- 22:31Speaker 2: little harsh on our guy Max, Like we're talking about
- 22:34Speaker 2: like if you exercise muscle, it's going to get stronger, right,
- 22:37Speaker 2: I mean, come on, I like this guy. And Max
- 22:40Speaker 2: sent us a nice card, Karen, where's that card from
- 22:42Speaker 2: himptop it?
- 22:46Speaker 1: Oh, i's going to talk about now I shouldn't talk
- 22:49Speaker 1: about No, that's I should I want to set it
- 22:51Speaker 1: up that way. What's this?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Oh, that's a card from Max, a message to each
- 22:57Speaker 3: of us.
- 22:57Speaker 6: I almost threw it on that random ear on the table.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Matthew. This guy does say is mostly joking, so.
- 23:06Speaker 1: We should well. I like him, I think, But this remembered.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I just remember what I was gonna talk about because
- 23:10Speaker 1: it's something I shouldn't talk about because it's gonna get
- 23:13Speaker 1: me in trouble with my wife, my kid, and my
- 23:16Speaker 1: kid's school. How much trouble minor go for it my kid.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I just had to go to the parents meeting for
- 23:26Speaker 1: speech and debate. Mmkay. And I'm down there and I'm
- 23:31Speaker 1: sitting with my wife debating with her. No I did.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say, this is like sad through the
- 23:37Speaker 1: whole parents meeting. And I said to her afterward, the
- 23:41Speaker 1: second the guy was done talking, we're still sitting there,
- 23:43Speaker 1: and I said, I have one of those things for
- 23:46Speaker 1: you that you're gonna be annoyed that I said, you're
- 23:50Speaker 1: not gonna take it seriously and you're never gonna give
- 23:53Speaker 1: it it's due. And this intrigued her to want to
- 23:58Speaker 1: know what exactly it was, and it was this, I'm like,
- 24:02Speaker 1: I don't like any part of this whole thing. Why
- 24:07Speaker 1: would you want to without knowing these kids, all these
- 24:13Speaker 1: kids in high school, they're even talking about parents donating
- 24:17Speaker 1: money to support speech and debate.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Okay, I got to hear more about why you don't
- 24:22Speaker 2: like it.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Like teaching your kids martial arts.
- 24:24Speaker 1: No, I'm getting there as someone. It occurred to me
- 24:26Speaker 1: midway something. It occurred to me midway through this whole thing.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I don't know their ethics in ideology? Why would I
- 24:34Speaker 1: want to spend money training them and being convincing when
- 24:39Speaker 1: I don't know what they're going to try to convince
- 24:41Speaker 1: people of. I would spend it in infusing them with
- 24:45Speaker 1: my ethics in ideology, and then of those who adopted
- 24:50Speaker 1: that them, I would then teach them to be convincing.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But how could I just come into a room of
- 24:58Speaker 1: high school kids and want them all to you convincing
- 25:00Speaker 1: when I don't know? And I came up with a slogan,
- 25:03Speaker 1: today's kids are tomorrow's enemies. That's a good one.
- 25:07Speaker 4: It's like, that's one of your best.
- 25:13Speaker 1: It just occurred to me, and my wife, in fact,
- 25:16Speaker 1: did not give it its due. She still hasn't given
- 25:19Speaker 1: me what she thinks about the whole Well.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I think the idea is that it's like they're teaching them,
- 25:22Speaker 4: They're giving them a template that they can slot in
- 25:25Speaker 4: ideology as they get older and form their own opinions.
- 25:28Speaker 1: But how do we need them certain how do we
- 25:31Speaker 1: know that? We don't take a kid and make him
- 25:34Speaker 1: super good at being convincing and then and then he
- 25:36Speaker 1: goes out and convinces people to do horrible stuff.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Becomes an anti hunting like yes.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and to be like people be like, my god,
- 25:44Speaker 1: how do you get so good at convincing everybody of that?
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I'd be like, oh, you know, I donated twenty
- 25:49Speaker 1: dollars to his speech and debate program. Perhaps I'm to blame.
- 25:55Speaker 5: I thought this is gonna be one of those scenarios
- 25:57Speaker 5: where like the ex pro basketball player is watching his
- 26:00Speaker 5: son get coached by a guy who never played pro
- 26:04Speaker 5: bound steps.
- 26:06Speaker 1: That's not how you do that. That's gotta happen. No,
- 26:09Speaker 1: it really, it really shook it really shook me up.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Can I interrupt for a second? How good are spin it?
- 26:18Speaker 1: You're looking very good? Spin it? Spin it? Okay, we
- 26:24Speaker 1: got to sol that hole with what's called the baseball stitch.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Or can you pull that other towards you so we
- 26:29Speaker 4: can see that.
- 26:30Speaker 1: No, yeah, now you'll see that there's a set nail
- 26:37Speaker 1: on the bottom of that stretching board, krin behind you,
- 26:40Speaker 1: a double headed nail on the bottom. Over here, No,
- 26:46Speaker 1: the bottom of that stretching board. You're pointing to a
- 26:49Speaker 1: fleshing beam, the one against them. Turn your attention to
- 26:52Speaker 1: the fleshing to the stretcher, and you'll see at the
- 26:56Speaker 1: bottom of it there is a double headed nail. Pull
- 26:59Speaker 1: that double head to nail out that will collapse and
- 27:03Speaker 1: you can pull that kayut off that board. Make sure
- 27:09Speaker 1: there's no thumbtack in it anywhere.
- 27:13Speaker 4: How it come out.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Anyways, he says, so kindly inform max care Dds. This
- 27:20Speaker 1: is the part I like the most. We're back to this,
- 27:23Speaker 1: so kindly inform max care dds that my formula drinking,
- 27:28Speaker 1: pre chewed, dear me eating baby would whoop his baby
- 27:31Speaker 1: any day of the week. That would be a great
- 27:35Speaker 1: show if we had babies come and fight on this table.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I think it would charge a pretty penny for tomorrow's enemies.
- 27:42Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's where he adds the mostly joking at
- 27:49Speaker 5: the end of that.
- 27:50Speaker 1: No good you. You raise good points, but you raise
- 27:55Speaker 1: good points, thank you, Matthew. Uh uh, who wants to
- 28:03Speaker 1: set that. We're gonna move move our attention over to Virginia. Well,
- 28:08Speaker 1: it's kind of a letter to someone rotents. We'll just
- 28:10Speaker 1: tack we'll tackle this whole thing. Uh, my good friend
- 28:13Speaker 1: bubbly Doug Duran, who I adore, he's got some gripes.
- 28:20Speaker 1: He's got some land owner uh gripage about this next subject.
- 28:28Speaker 1: We're talking about deer hunting with hounds.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Like personal experienced gripage or he just generally makes him uncomfortable.
- 28:35Speaker 1: No, I gotta explain a thing because I'm a little
- 28:37Speaker 1: ahead of myself. We're gonna move our attention to deer
- 28:40Speaker 1: hunting with hounds in Virginia. The debate around that. Now
- 28:44Speaker 1: that's in the South. You can do that just generally,
- 28:48Speaker 1: like there's a culture of hound hunting for deer in
- 28:50Speaker 1: the South, and there's not a culture of hound hunting
- 28:52Speaker 1: for deer in the North. In the North, it's illegal,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and there's a handful of Southern states. No no, no, no, no, no,
- 28:57Speaker 1: no no no. You remember a podcast episode we had
- 29:01Speaker 1: that was called skip the flip. Mm hmmm, we're not
- 29:05Speaker 1: skipping the flip.
- 29:09Speaker 4: For those listeners at home. He's referring to Corenes on
- 29:12Speaker 4: the stretch to get back to the town thing.
- 29:14Speaker 1: You got to put him on inside out and then
- 29:18Speaker 1: you dry him overnight inside out and then you flip
- 29:21Speaker 1: it or else it'll dry to the board. So skip
- 29:25Speaker 1: the flip. Because Mercer Long lives in the Mojave Desert,
- 29:30Speaker 1: and he was pointing out that where he lives is
- 29:32Speaker 1: so dry that they don't do he doesn't need to
- 29:36Speaker 1: do the two part dry. He skips the flip and
- 29:39Speaker 1: just puts it on hair side out right. But you
- 29:44Speaker 1: need to dry the outside and then flip it so
- 29:47Speaker 1: that it doesn't stick to the board and get rotten.
- 29:50Speaker 1: So it'll flip in the morning. Okay, all rights, Yep,
- 29:57Speaker 1: you're getting there. I don't stretch, No, no, don't stretch.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Just snug it up. Snug it up on there. You'll
- 30:07Speaker 1: get more now, and then go ahead and pin those
- 30:09Speaker 1: ears up so it looks like that one for now.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Just pin him up, yep. Just give him a light.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Don't don't lay it kind of roll it, don't Yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 1: so yeah, don't not tight. You don't want to make
- 30:21Speaker 1: a lot of surface connection. There's a light little pinning.
- 30:25Speaker 8: Uh.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Hound hunting for deer, and and I know that like
- 30:30Speaker 1: dog has where Douglaves is popular to run coyotes with dogs,
- 30:35Speaker 1: hm and Doug has Doug I hate to put I'm
- 30:38Speaker 1: not putting words in his mouth. We'll find well, Doug
- 30:42Speaker 1: is brought up Doug has brought up the difficulty of
- 30:46Speaker 1: in his area, the near impossibility of preventing your dogs
- 30:49Speaker 1: from hunting other people's property.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Because you're talking about small farms, right.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Yeah, It's like, you know, you got an area of
- 30:54Speaker 1: small dairy farms and you turn them out on a coyote.
- 30:58Speaker 1: The kyle goes wherever he wants. The dogs are going
- 31:00Speaker 1: wherever the kyo went, and you can't really even kind
- 31:04Speaker 1: of suggest that you have any control over your dogs
- 31:08Speaker 1: being in other people's places. So you're sitting there deer
- 31:11Speaker 1: hunt and also you know, here comes to everybody's pack
- 31:14Speaker 1: of dogs and he says it causes a lot of
- 31:17Speaker 1: consternation in this area.
- 31:19Speaker 2: It's there's no rule against letting your dog run on
- 31:25Speaker 2: other people's ground.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I don't know is that true.
- 31:28Speaker 2: No, I'm asking like I would assume it's legal for it,
- 31:31Speaker 2: Like you're not doing anything wrong and wrong if your
- 31:34Speaker 2: dog runs a coyot across three or four different properties.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Well, I know this and this state that we're sitting
- 31:39Speaker 1: in right now. If a dog attacks your livestock. There's
- 31:44Speaker 1: no questions asked. You can kill that dog right for
- 31:47Speaker 1: harrassing your livestock right away. So here's a lessener feedback.
- 31:53Speaker 1: This is from a listener. Yes, okay, the guy says
- 31:59Speaker 1: this recently, I state rejected regulations around the use of
- 32:03Speaker 1: dogs for deer hunting, the mandated use of GPS collars,
- 32:07Speaker 1: and making reasonable effort to ensure dogs can't enter property
- 32:12Speaker 1: where owners have requested dogs not be run. I'm torn
- 32:17Speaker 1: on this issue because I see it as a slippery
- 32:19Speaker 1: slope on both sides. Meaning okay, So he's saying the
- 32:23Speaker 1: state considered but ultimately rejected regulations that would have mandated
- 32:31Speaker 1: deer hound hunters mandated that they put the GPS collar
- 32:35Speaker 1: on their dogs so that they know where the dog is,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and then with using that GPS tracking collar, make effort
- 32:43Speaker 1: to keep their dogs off of people's property.
- 32:45Speaker 2: With a lot of those units, you can hit like
- 32:47Speaker 2: a callback button that that dog will stop doing whatever
- 32:51Speaker 2: it's doing and turn around.
- 32:54Speaker 1: He says, I'm torn on this issue because I see
- 32:56Speaker 1: it as a slippery slope on both sides. On the
- 32:58Speaker 1: one hand, I do not run dogs to hunt deer
- 33:01Speaker 1: and have had many deer in Turkey hunts in recent
- 33:04Speaker 1: years disturbed by a pack of dogs dogs running through
- 33:08Speaker 1: the properties I can access. Given the limited weekend time
- 33:12Speaker 1: I have to hunt between work responsibilities and small kids,
- 33:16Speaker 1: having game runoff because of a pack of dogs coming
- 33:19Speaker 1: onto a property is frustrating. I can also understand the
- 33:23Speaker 1: frustration of property owners who have a pack of dogs
- 33:27Speaker 1: run through and disturb their land, their livestock, or the
- 33:30Speaker 1: game and habitat on their property. On the other hand,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I recognize that hound hunting deer is an important tradition
- 33:40Speaker 1: that many people in Virginia is an important tradition to
- 33:44Speaker 1: many people in Virginia. And though I don't run dogs
- 33:47Speaker 1: for deer hunting, I have hunted. I have fox hunted
- 33:50Speaker 1: with a pack of hounds, a pretty similar practice. I
- 33:53Speaker 1: realized that in this way, my stance is somewhat hypocritical.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Regulations on hunting fox with dogs in places like England
- 34:01Speaker 1: have made my state one of the last I'm gonna
- 34:07Speaker 1: edit this a little bit. He's saying that his state
- 34:09Speaker 1: is one of the last refuges of the sporting tradition
- 34:12Speaker 1: of hound hunting with dogs. What fox hunting with dogs?
- 34:18Speaker 2: No, it's just like he's just saying, it's one of
- 34:21Speaker 2: the last places you can use hounds, which is a little.
- 34:26Speaker 5: He's saying, regulations on fox hunts in England have.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Made my state one of the last fox hunting is
- 34:35Speaker 1: all I got you. No, no, no, no, he's saying. Here's
- 34:39Speaker 1: what he's saying. I think he's saying, like, hey, man,
- 34:43Speaker 1: in places like England, they've regulated the piss out of
- 34:46Speaker 1: hunt with dogs, fox hunting to the point whebase he
- 34:48Speaker 1: can't do it. So he's saying, so with England out
- 34:50Speaker 1: of the picture, Virginia has become one of the last
- 34:55Speaker 1: places for the sporting tradition of hunting fox with hounds.
- 35:01Speaker 1: That's what he's saying. Yep. And he's saying that being
- 35:04Speaker 1: able to hunt foxes with hounds is very effective and
- 35:07Speaker 1: helping to manage fox and kyo populations. And he says also,
- 35:13Speaker 1: just like deer hunting with dogs is constantly under attack,
- 35:17Speaker 1: fox hunting is also constantly under attack in Virginia from
- 35:21Speaker 1: the usual suspects in the animal rights community. He goes on,
- 35:28Speaker 1: I recognize the near possibility of keeping a large pack
- 35:31Speaker 1: of dogs together and off adjoining properties while they are
- 35:34Speaker 1: on the hunt, and I realized that hound hunters don't
- 35:36Speaker 1: want to give an inch on the deer hunting issue
- 35:39Speaker 1: because of the need to guard the gate, Meaning deer
- 35:45Speaker 1: hound hunters in Virginia are fighting for the defense of
- 35:49Speaker 1: their lifestyle and they're not in the mood to entertain compromises.
- 35:53Speaker 1: And he says, which I fully understand and support. I
- 35:56Speaker 1: also personally don't believe that the most recent proposed regulations
- 36:00Speaker 1: would be all that effective in keeping a pack of
- 36:02Speaker 1: dogs off adjoining properties. So that being said, what do
- 36:09Speaker 1: you think can be done in cases like this where
- 36:11Speaker 1: hunters are adversely affected by the actions and traditions of
- 36:15Speaker 1: other hunters. I do think there is a legitimate question
- 36:19Speaker 1: around the rights of private property owners, which would benefit
- 36:22Speaker 1: me personally. But by regulating one group of hunters in
- 36:26Speaker 1: this way, aren't we cracking open the door for the
- 36:28Speaker 1: slow erosion of other hunting traditions?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Very well, put, yep, that's the problem. Like, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 2: it doesn't bother you unless it's affecting you directly, right,
- 36:41Speaker 2: But then when it affects you directly, it's like, you.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Know, where does that put you?
- 36:46Speaker 2: There's no good answer, right, Like no.
- 36:49Speaker 1: If I came from otters, if I lived on a
- 36:50Speaker 1: planet outer space, I'll tell my kids there to day
- 36:56Speaker 1: that from other planets perspectives weren't outer space. I was
- 36:58Speaker 1: going to say, you live on a planet. You know
- 37:02Speaker 1: what I'm saying. They have a very like them centric worldview.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I was trying to be like, you know, we're in
- 37:07Speaker 1: outer space. If someone isn't another.
- 37:09Speaker 4: If aliens came here, they're talking about aliens.
- 37:12Speaker 1: They're talking about us being in outer space anyhow, if
- 37:16Speaker 1: other than a planet an outer space. And I was
- 37:18Speaker 1: totally not I was like, totally rational but completely unhip
- 37:22Speaker 1: to social morase on Earth. Follow and someone said, hey, man,
- 37:29Speaker 1: you know, as a Martian, do you think that someone
- 37:34Speaker 1: should be able to take a big pack of dogs
- 37:36Speaker 1: and and the person can't go on the neighbor's place,
- 37:39Speaker 1: but he can send his dogs around that neighbor's place
- 37:43Speaker 1: to chase the deer back over to his place so
- 37:45Speaker 1: he can shoot him. As a Martian, unattuned to, not
- 37:50Speaker 1: tuned into moras on planet Earth, I would be like, no,
- 37:53Speaker 1: I don't think you should be able to do that. Yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 1: it's called Mars Justice. Sounds like a show, like like
- 38:03Speaker 1: I'm not into any kind of you know, as a Martian,
- 38:05Speaker 1: I'm not into like any kind of long term like
- 38:08Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I just take face value arguments, right,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I don't know the history.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Yeah that makes sense, But I'm not from Mars.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I mean, if if you had a pack of dogs
- 38:21Speaker 2: screw up your hunt a time or two, it'd be
- 38:23Speaker 2: hard to have the attitude like I'm gonna take one
- 38:26Speaker 2: for the team here, right.
- 38:27Speaker 1: M h. I'll put that Martian thing in another way.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Let's say you were setting up a whole new state.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Like you got a whole new state, and you're in
- 38:36Speaker 1: charge of setting up a whole new state, and you
- 38:38Speaker 1: gotta like figure out all the rules. And when this
- 38:41Speaker 1: came up and they said, well, what are we gonna
- 38:44Speaker 1: do about? Like we all agree that you can't go
- 38:47Speaker 1: on another guy's lamb without permission, right, And everybody's like, oh, yeah,
- 38:50Speaker 1: that's that's obvious. And they go, what about if he
- 38:53Speaker 1: sends his big old pack of dogs all around in
- 38:55Speaker 1: the neighbor's place, it brings all them to your back
- 38:59Speaker 1: and and he gets them on his place. What should
- 39:02Speaker 1: we do in our new state? There's no tradition, Yeah,
- 39:06Speaker 1: there's no tradition. Part of that. So I'm trying to
- 39:08Speaker 1: get at with this Martian stuff. There's I'm not considering tradition. Yeah,
- 39:13Speaker 1: I would be like, in this state, this traditionless state,
- 39:16Speaker 1: I would say that I don't think you should be
- 39:18Speaker 1: able to do that.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah, But we're not talking about a new state. We're
- 39:22Speaker 2: talking about a state that has a long tradition.
- 39:24Speaker 4: Of This is like you're if days were forty eight
- 39:29Speaker 4: hours long, argument, then why it would be okay to
- 39:31Speaker 4: wear the same outfit for those forty eight hours?
- 39:34Speaker 1: Like why I wear my clothes two days in a row.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Now, if we lived at a completely different reality, then
- 39:38Speaker 4: they would be different.
- 39:39Speaker 5: Yes, I I mean this I think raises the question.
- 39:46Speaker 5: Like in Montana, we actually did create a new hound
- 39:49Speaker 5: hunting opportunity for black bears recently, and at the time
- 39:53Speaker 5: it was proposed, I was a little nervous that going
- 39:58Speaker 5: out in the spring it would be a different experience.
- 40:01Speaker 1: And it wasn't like I didn't.
- 40:03Speaker 5: It's not like I don't support hound hunting, you know,
- 40:06Speaker 5: straight all over the place because this is about private property, buddy, Well, no,
- 40:10Speaker 5: I'm we're talking about tradition and whether we're creating tradition
- 40:15Speaker 5: or or like creating a new opportunity. And I will say,
- 40:19Speaker 5: like my concerns.
- 40:20Speaker 1: About that you're talking about my new state.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Yeah, that I was falling up that that question. Like,
- 40:26Speaker 5: I mean, there are instances where it's not just a
- 40:29Speaker 5: new state, but there are new traditions being proposed understood.
- 40:32Speaker 5: And I will say, like it it didn't change the
- 40:34Speaker 5: spring blackbird hunt in the way that I thought it might.
- 40:37Speaker 2: But I got an answer for this guy just needs
- 40:39Speaker 2: to package. Here we go, just answer he just needs
- 40:42Speaker 2: to get a pack of dogs. The problem solved.
- 40:48Speaker 1: But I do think that it can't beat them, join them.
- 40:50Speaker 5: The private property thing is weird because I killed I
- 40:52Speaker 5: killed a lion a couple of years ago, and when
- 40:56Speaker 5: the dogs are chasing that lion, they picked up another
- 40:59Speaker 5: lion and some of the lions. Some of the dogs
- 41:01Speaker 5: went down and tree a cat on private property and
- 41:05Speaker 5: like a little subdivision.
- 41:06Speaker 2: But allowed to go legally, go get your dogs off.
- 41:10Speaker 5: We I mean we went down and knocked on the
- 41:12Speaker 5: door and got the dogs and the cat presumably I'm
- 41:17Speaker 5: pretty sure, but it was still I mean, it still
- 41:22Speaker 5: feels very uncomfortable, right. I'm kind of like because I
- 41:27Speaker 5: do think like if if I were that homeowner. And
- 41:30Speaker 5: I looked out my window and there's like a couple
- 41:32Speaker 5: of guys pulling their dogs away from a tree and
- 41:34Speaker 5: there's a cat up there. Like yeah, that's it's a
- 41:37Speaker 5: little weird, and I felt funny about it.
- 41:38Speaker 1: But what you're gonna do. I've totally changed my mind
- 41:42Speaker 1: now that I thought about them more. Now, if I
- 41:46Speaker 1: was setting up a new state and someone brought this up,
- 41:48Speaker 1: you know what I would think to myself, everybody has
- 41:50Speaker 1: to have dogs. No picture this, just let me walk it.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Let me picture a scenario.
- 41:54Speaker 7: Here.
- 41:55Speaker 1: We're looking at extremes. I'm looking at the extreme of
- 41:58Speaker 1: the he sends all his dogs over there. He sends
- 42:00Speaker 1: like thirty dogs over there to do like an organized
- 42:03Speaker 1: drive right and like strip this guy's property of deer.
- 42:08Speaker 1: That's an extround view. But picture this pictures little Tommy.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Little Tommy Dickinson is hunting rabbits with his beagle on
- 42:20Speaker 1: the fence line with old Man Morgan. So we got
- 42:24Speaker 1: little Tommy Dickinson hunting old Man Morgan's fence line, and
- 42:29Speaker 1: he's got his little beagle, Patsy. Patsy periodically is under
- 42:36Speaker 1: the fence, across the fence, under the fence across the fence.
- 42:39Speaker 1: What do you do? Shoot Tommy Dickinson or dog shoot Patsy?
- 42:44Speaker 1: Is that what you're saying, shoot him both? Of course not.
- 42:48Speaker 1: He can't control Patsy's going around Old man Morgan's in
- 42:51Speaker 1: his place. Yeah, no, want to live in a place
- 42:56Speaker 1: like this.
- 42:56Speaker 6: That rabbit runs out of Morgan's deck and then followed
- 43:01Speaker 6: him under.
- 43:01Speaker 1: The deck, and Morgan's on the deck sleeping.
- 43:03Speaker 5: What if the dog goes into Morgan's house he starts
- 43:06Speaker 5: eating his cat's food.
- 43:10Speaker 1: And it gets sticky. That's why this is a tricky one.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Because it's a tricky one, you almost want to make
- 43:16Speaker 1: a rule that says like, don't push it. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 43:21Speaker 1: if you're a hound hunter, don't push it. Control your dogs,
- 43:25Speaker 1: don't push it.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Or look, you could kind of train up hound
- 43:32Speaker 2: hunters to be like we're doing a deer push here
- 43:35Speaker 2: with our hounds. Knock on some doors in advance, let
- 43:38Speaker 2: the landowners know, maybe they'll come. I don't know, like
- 43:41Speaker 2: there's ways that like handle this that might make it
- 43:45Speaker 2: more palatable to people.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Okay, let me hit you with this one. Then, since
- 43:50Speaker 1: we're playing this game, I've talked about this, we have
- 43:55Speaker 1: our rough cut episode. We got a rough cut episode.
- 43:58Speaker 1: We talked about a bunch where me and seth ur
- 43:59Speaker 1: ratland bucks down in Texas. Now we're hunting on a
- 44:04Speaker 1: property where they don't do any kind of like food
- 44:07Speaker 1: feeding licks, mineral licks. Nothing's got natural water, well like
- 44:13Speaker 1: dirt tanks for cattle and natural food. That's it. They
- 44:17Speaker 1: don't lift a finger for the deer for feeding them.
- 44:21Speaker 1: The neighboring place is a very managed deer property, okay,
- 44:26Speaker 1: And they got all the feeders and all that kind
- 44:28Speaker 1: of stuff they're putting out like they're like deworming the
- 44:30Speaker 1: deer all kinds.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Of but not high fences are they doing?
- 44:33Speaker 1: No, No, gotcha no, but they're like taking care of deer,
- 44:37Speaker 1: managing deer. We we would make a habit of sitting
- 44:41Speaker 1: close to that border, rattling, trying to rattle over the
- 44:44Speaker 1: big those real healthy ones, trying to rattle over these
- 44:49Speaker 1: like high protein megabucks. Could you make the case, well,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you're sound, you're sound is coming onto my property taking
- 45:02Speaker 1: my deer. No, you couldn't. Come on.
- 45:07Speaker 2: It's a dog versus some rattling.
- 45:13Speaker 1: It's just if you're setting up a new state. This
- 45:15Speaker 1: is all stuff you gotta consider. Yeah, yeah, I.
- 45:19Speaker 5: Mean, I I that one is. I don't think there's
- 45:23Speaker 5: any like wrong there. But yeah, if I was like
- 45:26Speaker 5: managing my dear herd and the neighbor just always.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Set up on the property line, right, you might put
- 45:31Speaker 2: a fence up.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I might put a fence up. That's a big
- 45:34Speaker 1: part of growing up, though, is whatever place you have
- 45:37Speaker 1: permission to hunt on or whatever public mind you got,
- 45:40Speaker 1: like you edge it. You know, the best hunting is
- 45:43Speaker 1: right on the edge. You can get permission to be
- 45:47Speaker 1: Like some guy's got three hundred acres and you look
- 45:49Speaker 1: over at that neighbor's place and you're like, I'm gonna
- 45:51Speaker 1: sit around. It's gotta be better over there. And the
- 45:57Speaker 1: neighbor's taking to say anything about your place, so his
- 45:59Speaker 1: tree stands also right on the edge of the property
- 46:01Speaker 1: you got frishon.
- 46:04Speaker 7: Uh.
- 46:06Speaker 1: But you know, but I can only take this New
- 46:08Speaker 1: State Mars stuff so far, because like, there is the
- 46:11Speaker 1: tradition thing. I've just really my sympathies go out to
- 46:18Speaker 1: the hound hunters who are doing the same thing, but
- 46:22Speaker 1: the the culture is changing around them. Yeah, let me
- 46:26Speaker 1: ask you this, they're like holdouts.
- 46:29Speaker 2: If if this was Virginia. Yeah, let's say a ballot
- 46:34Speaker 2: box movement came up to just outlaw hound hunting, dear
- 46:40Speaker 2: hound hunting. Like, what you know, something just happened in Colorado.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I'd fight it tooth and nail.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Okay, that's I mean, that's what it boils down.
- 46:51Speaker 1: I'd carpet bag it from out here.
- 46:52Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I think.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Like, you know what, that's a reference to someone drawing
- 47:00Speaker 2: some bags in a carpet or a carpet and a
- 47:02Speaker 2: bag reconstruction.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I know, why'd you act like you're dumb?
- 47:07Speaker 2: Because you obviously wanted to explain it.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Thank you. You're like, he explain it no matter.
- 47:18Speaker 5: Why you act like you were dumb because I knew
- 47:20Speaker 5: you wanted to act like you were smart.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Up, Thanks many thanks.
- 47:29Speaker 5: My reaction to this guy's letter is like, yeah, it's complicated,
- 47:33Speaker 5: you know, like he sees it from a lot of
- 47:35Speaker 5: different ways than I do too.
- 47:39Speaker 1: I'll propose it. I'm gonna propose the most the only
- 47:41Speaker 1: constructive thing I have to say on this thing. I
- 47:44Speaker 1: would if I was a if I I'm not a
- 47:55Speaker 1: deer hound hunter in Virginia, but I'm an occasional recreational
- 48:00Speaker 1: trapper in Montana. I don't always do just what I
- 48:08Speaker 1: I don't always do what I could. I don't always
- 48:13Speaker 1: do what I could totally because in my mind, I'm like, yeah,
- 48:18Speaker 1: you know, you could do that. You could do that.
- 48:23Speaker 1: You might get someone real upset, but you can do it.
- 48:28Speaker 1: But I could also do it over there and not
- 48:31Speaker 1: have anybody get real upset. And sure I could do that,
- 48:33Speaker 1: but I'm just not gonna do it, yeah, because I
- 48:35Speaker 1: don't wanna, you know, I don't when I sense that
- 48:42Speaker 1: I'm doing a thing that like, well, yeah you could,
- 48:45Speaker 1: but I shy away from those in those moments, you know.
- 48:51Speaker 1: And if I was a deer hound hunter in Virginia
- 48:53Speaker 1: and I thought there's nothing stopping me from hunting what
- 48:57Speaker 1: was his name, though, Man Morgan Morgan. I know old
- 49:03Speaker 1: Man Morgan has asked me a hundred times not to
- 49:07Speaker 1: hunt his place on the opening day, but he can't
- 49:11Speaker 1: stop me. Yeah, well, it's the song I'm gonna hunt
- 49:14Speaker 1: Old Man Morton.
- 49:15Speaker 5: I feel like the same way when I'm gonna go
- 49:17Speaker 5: hunt a spot and there's two trucks parked where I
- 49:20Speaker 5: wanted to park. My attitude isn't like I can do
- 49:25Speaker 5: whatever I want. It's kind of like if I were
- 49:28Speaker 5: parked here, I wouldn't want someone to pull him behind me.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I was gonna put decoys on that pond and no
- 49:33Speaker 1: one can stop me, So move your decoys over.
- 49:37Speaker 5: I was gonna sit in that tree, and there's a
- 49:39Speaker 5: guy sitting in this tree, I'm gonna sit right next
- 49:42Speaker 5: to him.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Yeah, i'd say, if you're a dear hound hunter in Virginia,
- 49:45Speaker 2: the best way to make sure it sticks around for
- 49:47Speaker 2: a while to just show some courtesy and some restraint.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Moving on across the country to Arizona.
- 49:57Speaker 2: No, we're not doing this.
- 49:59Speaker 1: We're skipping this. Maner Well, no, he's just asking a question.
- 50:03Speaker 2: No, no, this is this is not.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Oh we're skipping this. Should Yeah, moving on across the
- 50:11Speaker 1: country to reciprocity the Dakotas. Yeah, moving to the Dakotas.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Kind of across the country, we could across a chunk
- 50:21Speaker 1: of it. On a recent podcast episode six seventeen, if
- 50:27Speaker 1: you haven't put this together yet, we're talking about old
- 50:29Speaker 1: podcast episode discussion points. We touched on a thing that
- 50:35Speaker 1: states do called reciprocity, and I had always known reciprocity
- 50:41Speaker 1: only under the interesting little management. I'm struggling here. I
- 50:51Speaker 1: had known reciprocity only in one context, and for bearer management.
- 50:57Speaker 1: They use reciprocity to even the playing field from one
- 51:03Speaker 1: state to the next according to how their policies toward
- 51:06Speaker 1: non residents. That was a terrible sentence. Put hear me out.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Montana historically has not allowed non residents to buy a
- 51:21Speaker 1: fur harvester license. Okay, so of the species that are
- 51:26Speaker 1: living or managed as fur bearing animals muskrat, mink otter, beaver, bobcat. Okay,
- 51:33Speaker 1: there manages fur bearing animals. There was no non resident
- 51:37Speaker 1: opportunity to do with that in Montana. They changed it,
- 51:41Speaker 1: but there wasn't so they would set Other states would
- 51:44Speaker 1: set up a thing called reciprocity, meaning a state would
- 51:49Speaker 1: say we will sell you a non resident trapping permit
- 51:54Speaker 1: if your state would sell one of our residents a
- 51:58Speaker 1: non resident trapping permit. It and because of reciprocity, if
- 52:03Speaker 1: you lived in Montana, you didn't fur trap out of
- 52:07Speaker 1: state in a state that practiced reciprocity. Because they're like, dude,
- 52:11Speaker 1: you can't prevent like you're preventing our citizens from buying
- 52:14Speaker 1: the tags, but then you want to come here and
- 52:16Speaker 1: buy one of ours.
- 52:17Speaker 2: They do the same with license prices too in some cases.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Oh do they think?
- 52:21Speaker 2: I think maybe, like you come to a state and
- 52:24Speaker 2: pay thousand bucks for an ELK tag. Okay, people from
- 52:30Speaker 2: that state come to your your state to buy a
- 52:32Speaker 2: deer tag, and they're going to charge you.
- 52:35Speaker 1: I think they're example, they'll stick it to them. Yeah. Well,
- 52:38Speaker 1: the other example that was even aware of is is
- 52:40Speaker 1: South Dakota had a reciprocity? Was it North or South
- 52:45Speaker 1: Dakota had this? South Dakota had no the spearfishing one
- 52:53Speaker 1: North Dakota, North Dakota. North Dakota had a reciprocity around
- 52:57Speaker 1: spear and pike through the ice. They're like, you can
- 53:00Speaker 1: spear pike through the ice if a North the Coton
- 53:03Speaker 1: can spear pike through the ice on your place. And
- 53:06Speaker 1: I was musing about this reciprocity issue because I was saying,
- 53:09Speaker 1: let's say Colorado had passed that failed. But let's say
- 53:13Speaker 1: Proposition one twenty seven had passed in Colorado and suddenly
- 53:17Speaker 1: you cannot hunt lines in Colorado. Would a state ever
- 53:21Speaker 1: exercise reciprocity to a Colorado resident, meaning a Colorado resident
- 53:25Speaker 1: wants to come to Montana and they're like, hey, I
- 53:27Speaker 1: want to buy a mountain lion tag Montana would say
- 53:30Speaker 1: no because our residents can't hunt mountain lions in your state, right.
- 53:38Speaker 1: I was musing about this, just the issue of reciprocity,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and we got some listener feedback from it. A guy
- 53:45Speaker 1: writes in I had the opportunity to tune into the
- 53:48Speaker 1: Popping Corks podcast. That's a name of an episode where
- 53:52Speaker 1: the topic of reciprocity was discussed from a wildlife management perspective.
- 53:57Speaker 1: While I can stack hands, I never heard of say
- 54:00Speaker 1: expression before. While I can stack hands on the idea
- 54:05Speaker 1: of states and their respective agencies dictating reciprocity rules for
- 54:11Speaker 1: state managed species, I find it a hard pill to
- 54:16Speaker 1: swallow when it comes to the topic of federally managed species,
- 54:22Speaker 1: specifically and selfishly waterfowl. He goes on, why is it
- 54:28Speaker 1: that a state such as South Dakota can have a
- 54:31Speaker 1: non resident lottery for a federally managed species. I buy
- 54:35Speaker 1: a federal duck stamp, which presumably some of this money
- 54:38Speaker 1: goes to habitat and conservation activities in the state of
- 54:41Speaker 1: South Dakota, among all others. Why then, would I not
- 54:45Speaker 1: have the same opportunity as a resident? He goes on,
- 54:50Speaker 1: you know, uh, he's not advocating to pay a resident rate.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Blah blah blah. I don't mean a blah blah blah
- 54:58Speaker 1: of disrespect, but I mean that's the base, this idea,
- 55:00Speaker 1: what he's saying. But he's overlooking something. Oh, he goes
- 55:03Speaker 1: there's one in another point he makes. This became more
- 55:06Speaker 1: top of mind to me when the limitation of non
- 55:09Speaker 1: resident hunters was brought up with respect to Stuttgart, Arkansas.
- 55:13Speaker 1: He says, Indeed, reciprocity is a slippery slope. Alec, you're
- 55:19Speaker 1: overlooking something. Ducks aren't just they're not just federally managed,
- 55:24Speaker 1: they're state in, federal and international.
- 55:30Speaker 5: And I also think like the reciprocity thing is a
- 55:33Speaker 5: little more complicated than just treating residents and non residence
- 55:36Speaker 5: the same. The reciprocity is about one state treating non
- 55:40Speaker 5: residents in their state and another state treating non residents
- 55:44Speaker 5: to that state in the same way, right, Like, yeah,
- 55:47Speaker 5: it's the state.
- 55:49Speaker 1: It's a state having varied attitudes toward non residents depending
- 55:55Speaker 1: on what state they come from and what the rulers
- 55:57Speaker 1: of that state are.
- 55:58Speaker 5: Yeah, so here, I'm not clear how the reciprocity. He
- 56:02Speaker 5: seems to have more of a complaint with the difference
- 56:07Speaker 5: between residents and non residents.
- 56:09Speaker 1: They got him thinking, yeah, the reciprocity thing got them
- 56:12Speaker 1: thinking yeah about this. Yeah, they're okay, just a couple
- 56:19Speaker 1: things here before it really taking on the question. You're right,
- 56:24Speaker 1: there's federal oversight of waterfowl regulations. Waterfowl regulations are jointly
- 56:30Speaker 1: managed by the Feds in the state. You might say, well,
- 56:33Speaker 1: why the hell is that, Well, think about it. They're migratory. Okay,
- 56:37Speaker 1: So let's say you had one state that totally shit
- 56:40Speaker 1: the bed on waterfowl management and they kill every dock
- 56:44Speaker 1: that comes through their state. Well, that state is then
- 56:47Speaker 1: screwing over other states along the flyway. So there's like
- 56:52Speaker 1: some federal oversight. Meaning these birds aren't stationary. They move
- 56:56Speaker 1: internationally in some cases. I mean there's many birds that
- 56:59Speaker 1: are they're nesting in northern Alaska, they fly all across Canada,
- 57:05Speaker 1: they fly over six or seven states, maybe more on
- 57:10Speaker 1: the way down, and they ultimately you know, some of
- 57:14Speaker 1: our teal will winter in the Bahamas, will have ducks
- 57:18Speaker 1: at winter in Mexico. Right, So there's an international bird.
- 57:21Speaker 1: So there's international and federal oversight on waterfowl management, but
- 57:27Speaker 1: the state still plays a very important role in rule
- 57:30Speaker 1: setting and enforcement, and when they look at things like
- 57:33Speaker 1: bag limits on ducks, the FEDS factor in the importance
- 57:38Speaker 1: of the state to waterfoul preservation in general, meaning if
- 57:43Speaker 1: you're a state that has that hosts a lot of
- 57:46Speaker 1: breeding pairs of birds for a long period of time,
- 57:49Speaker 1: you're going to be treated differently than a state that
- 57:52Speaker 1: maybe they only pass through for a month out of
- 57:54Speaker 1: the earth. All fair. So it's like, it's not just federal,
- 57:59Speaker 1: it's federal and eight that's a thing. That's why you
- 58:04Speaker 1: gotta have a state waterfall stamp and a federal waterfall stamp.
- 58:09Speaker 1: So I don't think the Feds are saying. The Feds
- 58:13Speaker 1: aren't saying. And I got an idea they're not going.
- 58:15Speaker 1: They're not going, like the Feds aren't going. And let's
- 58:17Speaker 1: have it be that in South Dakota, non residents can't hunt.
- 58:22Speaker 1: That's not coming from the Feds. That's coming from the
- 58:25Speaker 1: state who has management authority.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Yeah, what exactly, Like what kind of lot are we
- 58:36Speaker 2: talking about? Lottery for drawing?
- 58:38Speaker 1: They capped South Dakota's capped. You got to draw to
- 58:42Speaker 1: hunt ducks in South Dakota. I drew it a couple
- 58:44Speaker 1: of years ago. We went, we went hunted ducks in
- 58:46Speaker 1: South Dakota.
- 58:46Speaker 2: We like drew the Is it a state wide deal
- 58:49Speaker 2: or specific areas or.
- 58:51Speaker 1: I feel like it's state wide. I could be wrong.
- 58:53Speaker 1: I can't remember. And then they have different dates too,
- 58:56Speaker 1: and it's just have a resident opener a non resident opener.
- 59:00Speaker 1: His whole gripe, I think his whole gripe is he's saying,
- 59:04Speaker 1: how could you have a thing where there's federal oversight
- 59:06Speaker 1: but you have states making up their own rules, And
- 59:09Speaker 1: it's like, I guess the simplest answer is, it's not
- 59:12Speaker 1: just federal oversight.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Yeah, the state South Dakota's Fish and Game Agency is
- 59:18Speaker 2: also managing those ducks and geese.
- 59:21Speaker 1: Simple as that. In addition to here's another guy on reciprocity,
- 59:28Speaker 1: he says. He points out what he's eating as he
- 59:33Speaker 1: writes this. He's eating eggs, chicken, and pomegranate seeds.
- 59:40Speaker 3: That is an interesting combination.
- 59:44Speaker 1: He says. Let's say you invite me to your home. Okay,
- 59:50Speaker 1: he says, Let's say you invite me to your home
- 59:53Speaker 1: and you let me know there's no shoes in the
- 59:56Speaker 1: house policy for the purpose of keeping your carpet clean,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: like every Asian household. I obviously it's like, man, my
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: wife's trying to pull that on me right now. Oh
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: she's trying to after all these years. She claims that
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: it's always been that way. I just haven't listened.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: No, it's just so much better.
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: You just leave your shoes, You just leave your outside shoes.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: But you're yeah, yeah, yes, it's.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Like no ship. It's obvious to you.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: Especially when you're like going in and out of the
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: house doing ship.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: You gotta take them off. That's my whole thing. My
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: hands all dirt untied.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: You are exiting. See there you go.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I have a thing. I have these wool over shoes
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: that you put you slip your feet into to then run.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: Through the house or you can do that.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: But no, just it's like.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: A giant flip flop. No, it's like a giant slide in.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: You got to get your kids to buy into it too,
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: if you got kids.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: And that's difficult. Man, that's your thing. It's like the dog.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Don't take it well.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Some people white wash their dogs his feet before they.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: That.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: We just mop will I might switch. I might switch
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: because my wife. It drives my wife bananas.
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: Do you think he's eating a Frida egg or scrambled
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: eggs with his chicken and pomegranate?
- 1:01:14Speaker 9: You think the pomegranates rot, you know, like Frida egg
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: and chicken.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: That's a little bit like that steak and chicken Friday
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: and chicken. It's like that Old Testament prohibition against eating
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: meat and milk together, like like you can't, like you
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: wouldn't boil a calf in its mother's milk, like separating. Yeah,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it's like a chicken in the egg. It's like sheese,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: what came first? Give him a break?
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: And when I was in Hawaii eating scrambled eggs and
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: there was a chicken pecking at my feet, it's kind
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: of weird.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like my baby circle of life. Let's get
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: back to the show. Okay. So I tell him, hey man,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: this guy here, he writes in. I tell him, I said,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: hey man, don't wear your shoes at my house. I
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: want to keep my carpet clean. He says, I obviously
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: respect that rule and leave my stinkers. It's a euphemism
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: for shoes I gather. Leave my stinkers at the door outside.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Unless he's got really smelly feet, then you'd want him
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: to keep his shoes on.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Here's where it gets written. Here's where it gets ridded.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: He goes on to say, one week later, I invite
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you to my home. I do not have such a
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: shoe rule. In fact, I have no carpet in the house.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: But since I had to take my shoes off at
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: your house, I then tell you to leave your shoes
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: at the door as I walk around in my own shoes.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: Sounds deranged.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: He's equating all of this to reciprocity. But then I got.
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: Lost, But he says, that's petty international. I think the
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: or metaphor is you come into my house and I
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: crack open a beer and I tell you I don't
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: let people who don't live in this house eat or
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: drink in my house. And then I go over to
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: your house and I want to eat your food right like,
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: like there's not a This is silly because it doesn't
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: affect anybody. But the reality is like if you if
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: you told somebody that they can't have any of like
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: a beer in the fridge, and then you went over
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: to their house and grabbed a beer out of their fridge.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: That would be weird. Yeah. Yeah, I just want to
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: open a business where I would help people rationalize irrational decisions.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: You got to come up with a good name for that.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: We've got a podcast to do that on that can
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: be a new segment well.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Because it'd be like, let's say a guy wants to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: buy a new truck but just makes zero sense, right,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: he called, and I'd be like, hey, man, you work hard,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: you know, yeah, I mean, do you feel like your
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: full self and that old truck, Like, don't you feel
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: that you're gonna show up better at work and show
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: you better for your family? When you feel more confident
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: that he'll hang up, be like, God, buy that truck.
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: Putting American families in debt, and then you get you
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: commission from four.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: You should bring Susie Ormond back on the show.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, Listeners decide if they want to. Yeah.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: So it's like you help and this is his thing.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: This guy could start a little project where he takes
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: complex law issues and brings them home, you know, complex
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: law issues and he brings them into like household analogies.
- 1:04:43Speaker 9: Yeah, but if you like Steve's idea and then ride
- 1:04:46Speaker 9: into the Mediater podcast at the meadeater dot com with
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: your dilemmas.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Yeah, something you need to justify but you just can't,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: or I'll help you. If you're trying to to like
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: get something out of your wife or get a concession
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: out of your wife, but you can't think of how
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: to approach it, I'll walk you through it.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: What are they put in the subject line?
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: I need help?
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: That's perfect, I need help.
- 1:05:13Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: We occasionally get emails every now and then from people
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: who really do need help, so we might just Yeah,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: there might be a boy cried wolf situation.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: There on the same subject, sort of the same subject.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: It really like the reciprocity thing really got folks.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of people wrote it.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: In Okay, so here here's this one. Uh, not the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: same thing as reciprocity, but a something that seems unfair. Okay,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: dear me Eater crew. I know the subject of paying
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: higher prices if you are a non resident has been
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: covered on the podcast, but I'm in a situation that
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: I don't think has been covered and would like to
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: get everyone's thoughts. I'll try to make a long story short.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: I grew up in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: where my family owns hunting land with a camp. After
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I graduated high school, I joined the military, did twenty years.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Here he's stacking the deck.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: He is, he's setting himself up as he's stack in
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: the deck. He's trying to like gain points in his favor.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: But has nothing with all due respect, respect it, thank
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: you for your thank you for he's stacking the deck.
- 1:06:32Speaker 9: He may have taken the class that your kids, right,
- 1:06:34Speaker 9: but nothing.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. This is the kind of thing I
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: would help someone with.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: It would be like if Steve murdered someone and they
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: were like, Bud, he was a really good guy.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: What about what about a favor written?
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: And if I graduated high school and I never quite
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: really figured out what I wanted to do, kind of
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: bounced around for a while, got.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: In trouble with the law, and now I'd like to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: buy a resident hunting license. So you're sta. You know,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: he's stacking the deck. I'll let him do it. I'll
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: give I'll let him do it. After I graduated high school,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I joined the military to twenty years. Thank you for
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: your service. I'm he's stacking the deck.
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Well, I think it and it can now.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so put that out of your head and weighing
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: the fairness of this. He's here. He the jury, they
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: call it. He tainted the jury.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: He would start here.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Yeah, And now so now we're back to the fact
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: of the matter, with all due respect. And now I
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: am a permanent resident of Wisconsin, which is where my
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: wife is from. That's a good detail. That's not stacking
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: the deck. He goes on. I do bow hunt in Wisconsin.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: He doesn't mention this as a resident under resident pricing.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: He doesn't mention that I do bow hunt Wisconsin. But
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I still go to Michigan every year for the firearm
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: deer season to hunt at our camp. And of course
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: now I have to pay for a non resident license.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Last year, my dad took his name off the deed
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: and added mine to it. I am now part owner
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: along with a couple other family members, which means I'm
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: paying my part of the property, taxes, utilities, and everything
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: else that goes along with owning a hunting camp. It
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: seems to me that this is a little on the
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: unfair side because of all the other monies I am
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: paying to the state of Michigan by owning land that
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I still have to pay full price for a non
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: resident hunting license. He proposes a third category. He feels
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: that there should be a third category called the non
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: resident landowner to be fair. No, no, just waiting.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Montana has that coming home to hunt thing, which is yep, yeah,
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: really love that. But anyway, he's what he's saying is
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: he's deserves a discount, right, he.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Says, Hey, I'm paying property tax is a mission. I
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: deserve a discount. But here's the thing from state fishing
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: game agencies perspective, you can only be a resident of
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: one state. Yes, right, do you vote twice?
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: I don't understand why why this is so like fuzzy,
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: you know, like if you get busted for poaching, your
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: name goes into a database and then you're you lose
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: hunting and fishing privileges.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Right in all these.
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: Other compact stations in four states, Why don't we just
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: have a database where you you are a resident of
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: this state and it just cross references it. Because you
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: hear all the time about people buying three or four.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Oh sure, right, when when I was running the fly shop,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: like we're a license vender back in Colorado and there's
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: a lot of second homeowners in the valley we lived in,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: and this ship came up all the time for fishing licenses,
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: elk tags. They'd bring in bills, they'd show you, they're like,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: they show you all sorts of shiit to like be
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: like look, and I'm like, dude, you're not a resident.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Like there's nothing I can do about it.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: He goes on to bring up another gripe. I'm not
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: hacking on the guy. He's great questions. He brings up
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: another gripe. There's a lot of elk in that area,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: but it's a draw, but the elk draw isn't And
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: he's got elk to come on to his family's property,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: but he's not eligible for the elk draws. He's not
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: a resident. I would look at it like this, his
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: name Scott, Scott. I would think about it a little
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: bit like this. Would you write us saying, hey, man,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I vote in Wisconsin, but I own a place in Michigan,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: so I'd like to vote there too, Or would you
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: write into us and say, hey, I'm applying for unemployment
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: privileges in Wisconsin, but I have a place in Michigan.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: I want to apply for unemployment benefits in Michigan too.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I mean, of course not, it wouldn't.
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: It wouldn't surprise me if there were a state out
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: there that had an on resident landowner category pricing difference.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: No, because you know there's gonna be a lot of
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: money that's put into lobbying for that rule. Yep.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: And you could picture how that rules would non resident
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: landowner of preferences in the draw, which has been a
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: you know a thing.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Oh, this guy should know about this, Scott, you're gonna
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: dig You're gonna dig this one. If the if your
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: situation was going on in other states, there'd probably be
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: a thing where you were eligible. There might be a
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: thing where you guys were eligible for landowner tags. That
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: wouldn't matter where you were a resident. Just this is
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: all happening to you in the wrong state. Yep.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: But I'd look at it this way. You got a
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: great hunting camp in Michigan. You're resident of Wisconsin, so
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: you can hunt there. Tags are a little more expensive.
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: It sounds pretty good.
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: Ye how much are tags there?
- 1:11:52Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: How much are we talking about.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: Not Western price non resident prices.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: So it's not like if he that he'd be like
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: thousands of dollars.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: And I'll bet you can shoot a whole pile of
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: deer on that Michigan license if you wanted to.
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: Sorry, Scott transfers his residence to Michigan and becomes an
- 1:12:12Speaker 9: out of stat or in Wisconsin.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: Non resident looks like one hundred and ninety bucks versus.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: That's a smoking deal forty bucks.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: What I feel Scott should if he was gonna, if
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: he was going to rate out what chaps is ass more.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I feel like he should have greater ass chap over
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: the elk thing. Yeah. Yeah, that would chap my ass
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: more than the one ninety because he's hunting at home
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: for twenty bucks. Yeah in Wisconsin. Yeah, the elk thing's tough.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Oh you know what, here's the deal too. I could Okay,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: my mom still lives in the house I was brought
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: up in. I could say to my mom. I could
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: be like, hey, mom, we need to get my name.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: I want to get my name on the deed to
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: the house. Yeah, so that I can start hunting there
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: as a resident. Yep.
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: I mean that's the that's a low. I feel like
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: that's why residency has to be very particular, you know,
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: like because because there's all kinds of ways guys could
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: fuzz it up.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Yeah. You know what I would do. I would go
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: round to every state and I'd be like, I call realtor.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I'd be like, I want to buy the dumbest, shittiest
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: little lot you can find, Like it doesn't even need
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: to be big enough for me to stand on. Yeah, Like,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: if you can find any weird little thing I can buy.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: That way, I could be a resident.
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: Of county with the lowest taxes.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: That way, I cant as a resident there, Scott, be
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: shamed yourself, Scott, I don't know.
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: Thanks for being a listener of Scott.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Sorry, buddy, I love you to death, Scott.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: But I just, oh, you know what I failed to say?
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: He says, am I just whinding over nothing. He's not
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: winding over Canna shorten that whole thing up and said,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: uh huh, Yeah.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: I mean he's not saying he's not saying I want
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: to get a resident tag. To be fair, he's not
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: saying I should be able to get a resident.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: He's just saying somewhere in the middle, like, cut him
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: a break.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Yeah, somewhere the break. Yeah, twenty years of the military.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Cut me a break.
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: Yeah, let him apply for an elk tag.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: So he ends his thing. In all fairness to Scott,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: he ends this thing. So do I have a legitimate
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: complaint about paying non resident fees? Nor am I just
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: whining over nothing? Thanks for your thoughts on this. I
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: you know he should do. He should go hunt dogs place.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: With dom.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Yeah, with dogs. He should get a big pag of

- 1:15:48Speaker 1: and he's got pole cords. You you know, turn the
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: light on off, it'll be that, it'll be that they'll
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: those little Japanese beetles will be covering the pole beetle.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Now they're like a shiny copper color.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: It looks like a ladybug.

- 1:17:12Speaker 1: to come out and put some stuff on the walls
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: to try to get a grip on it. It was bad.
