- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Thursday, it is the 1st of
- 0:18February. A pinch and a punch for the
- 0:20first day of the month and all that.
- 0:23I hope that January has treated you well and that February is
- 0:27full of promise. Boy, my February is going to be
- 0:32quite an ending. Friends, this is a big month for
- 0:35Sean. This is the month where on the
- 0:3824th, I am going to be ordained as an Anglican minister, which
- 0:43is just the most mind blowing thing that I could possibly
- 0:48imagine. This is something that I never
- 0:50thought would be part of my story, but year and a half ago
- 0:53God told me otherwise. And it has been a long road to
- 0:57get to this month. And then literally two days
- 1:00later I head off for a month of army basic training when I will
- 1:05be converted from regular civilian Sean into Officer Sean
- 1:09who actually has a clue how to salute, when to salute, how to
- 1:14lead mend in army type situations etcetera.
- 1:18So that will be actually a whole month that I'm going to be a
- 1:23Wayne Canberra, which is enormous.
- 1:25So the month of February is really a preparation month for
- 1:29me and going to be quite a different ending.
- 1:32But all the way through that I'm sure your month is going to be,
- 1:37you know, potentially full of changes as well and big things
- 1:40and small things. And I'm sure hopefully for the
- 1:44sake of our energy levels, some regular days where we could just
- 1:47go about the things that we would usually do with love and
- 1:50kindness. So that is the situation for
- 1:53this month, but that is still a little way away right now.
- 1:57Right now we get to put all of that down and come back to God's
- 2:01word, which is the purpose of us tapping on play.
- 2:05We are going to continue in this story of David and Saul in this
- 2:11terrible mellet as they continue to to dodge each other and a
- 2:16terrible hatred that Saul is harbouring against his young
- 2:20competition. So join me friends, as we read
- 2:23together today. First Samuel, Chapter 23.
- 2:37One day news came to David that the Philistines were at Kayla,
- 2:42stealing grain from the threshing floors.
- 2:45David asked the Lord, Should I go and attack them?
- 2:49Yes, go and save Kayla, the Lord told him.
- 2:53For David's men said. We're afraid, even here in
- 2:57Judah. We certainly don't want to go to
- 2:59Kayla and fight the whole Philistine army, Sir David asked
- 3:03the Lord again and again. The Lord replied.
- 3:06Go to Kayla, for I will help you conquer the Philistines.
- 3:11So David and his men went to Kayla.
- 3:14They slaughtered the Philistines and took all their livestock and
- 3:18rescued the people of Kayla. Now when Abiathar, son of
- 3:23Ahimelech, fled to David at Kayla, he brought the Ephod with
- 3:27him. Soul soon learned that David was
- 3:30at Kayla's good. He exclaimed.
- 3:33We've got him now. God has handed him over to me,
- 3:37for he has trapped himself in a walled town.
- 3:41So Saul mobilised his entire army to March to Kayla and
- 3:46besieged David and his men. But David learned of Saul's plan
- 3:50and told Abiathar the priest, to bring the Ephod and ask the Lord
- 3:55what he should do. Then David prayed.
- 3:58Oh Lord God of Israel, I've heard that Saul is planning to
- 4:03come and destroy Kayla because I am here for the leaders of
- 4:07Kayla. Betray me to him, and we'll so
- 4:11actually come as I've heard. Oh Lord God of Israel, please
- 4:16tell me. And the Lord said he will come
- 4:21again? David asked.
- 4:22Will the leaders of Kayla betray me and my mentor Saul?
- 4:27And the Lord replied, Yes, they will betray you.
- 4:32So David and his men, about 600 of them, left Kayla and began
- 4:37roaming the countryside. Word soon reached Saul that
- 4:41David had escaped, so he didn't go to Kayla after all.
- 4:45David now stayed in the strongholds of the wilderness
- 4:48and in the Hill Country of Ziff. Soul hunted him day after day.
- 4:54But God didn't let Saul find him.
- 4:57One day near Horesh, David received the news that Saul was
- 5:01on his way to Ziff to search for him and kill him.
- 5:05Jonathan went to find David and encouraged him to stay strong in
- 5:09his faith in God. Don't be afraid, Jonathan
- 5:13reassured him. My father will never find you.
- 5:16You are going to be the king of Israel, and I will be next to
- 5:20you, as my father Saul is well aware.
- 5:24So the two of them renewed their solemn packed before the Lord.
- 5:28Then Jonathan returned home while David stayed at Horace.
- 5:33But now the men of Zif went to Saul in Gibeah and betrayed
- 5:37David to him. We know where David is hiding.
- 5:41He is in the strongholds of Horesh, in the hill of her
- 5:44Aquila, which is in the southernmost part of Jessiman.
- 5:48Come now, whenever you're ready. OK, King.
- 5:51And we will catch him and hand him over to you.
- 5:54The Lord bless you. Saul said that last.
- 5:58Someone is concerned about me. Go and check again to be sure of
- 6:02where he is staying and who has seen him there, for I know that
- 6:06he is very crafty. Discover his hiding places and
- 6:11come back when you are sure. Then I'll go with you.
- 6:14And if he is in the area at all, I'll track him down, even if I
- 6:18have to search every hiding place in Judah.
- 6:22So the men of Ziff returned home ahead of Saul.
- 6:26Meanwhile, David and his men had moved into the wilderness of
- 6:29Mayon, in the Arabah Valley South of Jessiman.
- 6:34When David heard that Saul and his men were searching for him,
- 6:37he went even farther into the wilderness, to the Great Rock,
- 6:42and he remained there in the wilderness of Mayon, but Saul
- 6:45kept after him in the wilderness.
- 6:48Saul and David were now on opposite sides of a mountain,
- 6:52just as Saul and his men began to close in.
- 6:55On David and his men, an urgent message reached Saul that the
- 6:59Philistines were raiding Israel again says Saul quit chasing
- 7:04David and returned to fight the Philistines.
- 7:07Ever since that time, the place where David was camped has been
- 7:12called the Rock of Escape. David then went to live in the
- 7:16strongholds of Engedi, Lord.
- 7:28As we read about the descent of Saul, we see what that intense
- 7:33self interest does to him. Lord, it is the human way for us
- 7:39to preference and prioritise our own well being and our own
- 7:43agenda. But that is not your way.
- 7:48You call us to something so much bigger and more wonderful than
- 7:53we could possibly ever imagine or pursue on our own.
- 7:57Your agenda stretches so much further than we could ever
- 8:02possibly see. And you are good, and you are
- 8:06just and you are fair. Lord, inspire us that we would
- 8:12put ourselves and our own agenda aside, That we would follow you.
- 8:19Lord Jesus, prompt us, Holy Spirit, guide us and show us
- 8:26where you would have us be, And act and love and forgive and
- 8:31show another way. You are truly a magnificent and
- 8:37good God, and we worship you with our whole lives.
- 8:43And we pray all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 8:46Amen.
