- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots catch 22 podcasts with Evan Lazar
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Alex Barth. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I will just say this after that Jaguars game, Alex.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We had a great debate on this show about Josh
- 0:26Speaker 1: McDaniels and the Patriots offense and all that kind of stuff.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And I am here to apologize to Josh McDaniels. I'm
- 0:33Speaker 1: sorry I doubted you. I'm sorry I did not see
- 0:36Speaker 1: the method to the madness. And I know I'm sounding
- 0:39Speaker 1: like I'm being facetious, but I'm really not. I'm being
- 0:42Speaker 1: dead serious about this. I wrote about it on Patriots.com
- 0:46Speaker 1: in my film review. It's clear to me now that
- 0:49Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels was being truthful when he said it's an
- 0:52Speaker 1: extension of the preseason. We're building fundamentals. We're building a
- 0:56Speaker 1: foundation so that we can start doing all the fancy
- 1:00Speaker 1: stuff down the line and build it off of a good,
- 1:03Speaker 1: strong foundation. Look who it is. Should I put my
- 1:11Speaker 1: glasses on? I have my readers on. A little bit
- 1:13Speaker 1: more Dorothy. Fill it in, baby.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Fill in. Catch-22 is down bad right now, Mike. We
- 1:22Speaker 1: are down bad. We're fighting for it. I feel a
- 1:26Speaker 1: lot better than poor Barthie does. And normally I'd make
- 1:29Speaker 1: fun of him for this, Deuce, but as a friend,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm a little bit genuinely worried about him right now.
- 1:34Speaker 1: But he's doing all right. We don't have to go
- 1:36Speaker 1: into too much detail about him. But Deuce is in
- 1:39Speaker 1: here to fill in today on Catch-22 because.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I love all these drops. I didn't even know these existed.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Catch 20 deuce. Yeah, there you go. Catch 20 deuce
- 1:50Speaker 1: today because Barthie is a DMP with an illness today.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So we're still going to do our normal show, though.
- 1:57Speaker 1: We're still going to talk injuries off the top because, unfortunately,
- 2:00Speaker 1: that's become our big picture thing. conversation every week this season, Mike,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and that's what we normally do. We start big picture,
- 2:09Speaker 1: then we zoom all the way in as close as
- 2:11Speaker 1: you could possibly go, microscopic, if you will, on this
- 2:15Speaker 1: Jets game. So just off the top, I saw a
- 2:19Speaker 1: stat today, this morning, that the Patriots are now tied
- 2:22Speaker 1: with For the league lead in games lost due to injury,
- 2:26Speaker 1: for starters, it is 27 games lost. And this takes
- 2:30Speaker 1: all the starters. So, like, Christian Gonzalez has missed a
- 2:33Speaker 1: couple games. Carlton Davis has missed a couple games.
- 2:35Speaker 4: A.J.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Brown has missed four games. And it adds them all up.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And it's the Patriots, the Lions and the Carolina Panthers
- 2:43Speaker 1: tied at the top of the league. So this has become, unfortunately,
- 2:47Speaker 1: a big topic of conversation around this team. Now, with
- 2:50Speaker 1: that being said, yesterday we got maybe some good news,
- 2:53Speaker 1: like maybe some some good signs of injury. So starting
- 2:59Speaker 1: with the two big ones, A.J. Brown and Christian Gonzalez, both.
- 3:03Speaker 1: back at practice yesterday and gonzalez spoke to the media
- 3:06Speaker 1: said he's ready to go he's going to play on
- 3:08Speaker 1: sunday so that's good to see good to hear uh
- 3:11Speaker 1: we'll see about aj brown and if he gets activated
- 3:14Speaker 1: for this game but along with that uh will campbell
- 3:17Speaker 1: and travion henderson Okay. Question mark.
- 3:21Speaker 5: So that was, I mean, we were in the locker
- 3:23Speaker 5: room and you saw Will Campbell walk by and was like, what, what, what?
- 3:26Speaker 1: Like, you know, I, I didn't think we'd see him
- 3:27Speaker 1: at all.
- 3:28Speaker 5: And then to, you know, we, you guys didn't see
- 3:30Speaker 5: him at practice of course, but he was listed as limited,
- 3:32Speaker 5: not something that's totally foreign to us with Mike Vrabel.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Um, so maybe a positive sign. I know Henderson's a
- 3:37Speaker 5: high ankle sprain.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That was the report.
- 3:39Speaker 5: So I, I, I don't know if we'll see either
- 3:41Speaker 5: of those guys, but at least it doesn't seem like
- 3:43Speaker 5: maybe they might not land on IR.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I'm still not out of the woods on that, though. No,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I don't know about this week for either one of
- 3:49Speaker 1: those guys, but we'll get to those two specifically in
- 3:52Speaker 1: a second. But just quickly, Travion Henderson going from a
- 3:56Speaker 1: high ankle sprain, which is a potential short-term IR candidate,
- 4:01Speaker 1: to limited in practice on Wednesday is some voodoo healing
- 4:04Speaker 1: stuff or something. He was a fast healer. Yeah, I mean,
- 4:07Speaker 1: that's a wicked fast healer, as we say around here.
- 4:10Speaker 1: But let's start with A.J. Brown and just his return here,
- 4:13Speaker 1: because I find this fascinating. And Mike Vrabel was asked
- 4:16Speaker 1: about this yesterday and he said, we're going to just
- 4:18Speaker 1: take it one game at a time. And, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 1: let's worry about this week, this week and next week,
- 4:23Speaker 1: next week. But they do have that Thursday night football
- 4:26Speaker 1: game next week. It's two games in five days. There's
- 4:28Speaker 1: really not a lot of practice time on the short
- 4:31Speaker 1: week with Thursday night football, especially when you're the team
- 4:33Speaker 1: that's traveling for the game. So how do you ramp
- 4:36Speaker 1: up A.J. Brown here? Because if you play him in
- 4:39Speaker 1: this game on Sunday, uh, then they had five days later,
- 4:42Speaker 1: they turn around and play the Chicago bears in Chicago.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But if you don't play him on Sunday, then how
- 4:49Speaker 1: much real reps is he going to have to get
- 4:52Speaker 1: ready for his return? Maybe next Thursday night.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I try not to overthink it, I think, but look,
- 4:57Speaker 5: this is a division game, you know, and as much
- 4:59Speaker 5: as it's, you know, Patriots jets and you kind of
- 5:01Speaker 5: are lulled into a sense of what this game usually is,
- 5:04Speaker 5: which you.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Expect the Patriots to win. Um, I just kind of like,
- 5:08Speaker 1: how do you feel, AJ? Does the medical staff feel
- 5:11Speaker 1: like you're ready to go? Do you feel ready to go?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Then let's just go and see.
- 5:14Speaker 5: And I mean, in some ways, I feel like this
- 5:16Speaker 5: game is more important than the Bears game, even though
- 5:18Speaker 5: the Bears game is probably a tougher game. So I
- 5:21Speaker 5: just I think it's a great sign he's back out there.
- 5:23Speaker 5: But I hear you. We always go with these debates
- 5:25Speaker 5: like what's right. And I I just think at the
- 5:26Speaker 5: end of the day, if he feels good, the medical staff.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Says he's good. then let's go. Yeah, that's sort of
- 5:32Speaker 1: how I feel about it, and it doesn't mean on
- 5:34Speaker 1: Sunday you have to throw him out there for 50 snaps.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He can kind of ease back into it against the
- 5:39Speaker 1: Jets on Sunday a little bit. I think getting him
- 5:42Speaker 1: even 15 to 20 reps in the game on Sunday
- 5:45Speaker 1: has some value, and maybe it's not a full workload
- 5:48Speaker 1: for him, and maybe he's not... you know, get in
- 5:51Speaker 1: 15 targets or anything crazy, but you just get them
- 5:53Speaker 1: out there and get a sea legs, you know, that
- 5:56Speaker 1: sort of thing. So I, I do no inside information,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but I do kind of expect to see him in
- 6:01Speaker 1: this game on Sunday. Yeah. I like what you're saying. And, and,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, but then you get in a game where
- 6:04Speaker 1: you're like, Oh crap, we're down. Like we need to
- 6:06Speaker 1: throw the ball. And then here we are. But, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 6:10Speaker 5: I think getting them back out there will be a
- 6:12Speaker 5: great sign. I mean, the only thing I just was
- 6:13Speaker 5: a little bit of a bummer is we saw the
- 6:15Speaker 5: practice for it as you looks pretty good.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And then, but you know, you see, it's pretty taped
- 6:18Speaker 1: up too.
- 6:18Speaker 5: So, you know, he's, Still in the recovery process. But
- 6:21Speaker 5: as far as the running, I mean, my eyes, he
- 6:23Speaker 5: looked okay. He wasn't limping across the field. That's a
- 6:27Speaker 5: good sign.
- 6:27Speaker 1: No, absolutely. And I think with Christian Gonzalez, there's not
- 6:30Speaker 1: much else to add about that. I think he's fine.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think he's ready to play, and I think he's
- 6:34Speaker 1: good to go. So he'll be back out there. We'll
- 6:36Speaker 1: get to him more later on in the show with
- 6:38Speaker 1: the Jets preview. Let's talk about Campbell and Travion Henderson, though, because...
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, as I mentioned, I think this thing with
- 6:46Speaker 1: Travion Henderson is kind of crazy. You know, a lot
- 6:48Speaker 1: of the reporting coming out of the game is that
- 6:50Speaker 1: it was a high ankle sprain. We just saw AJ
- 6:53Speaker 1: Brown go on a IR for four games at the
- 6:55Speaker 1: high ankle sprain. Now there is that whole, we talked
- 6:58Speaker 1: about this yesterday on unfiltered. They don't have that many
- 7:01Speaker 1: return spots left at this point when you start to
- 7:04Speaker 1: designate all these guys for return, but that doesn't mean
- 7:07Speaker 1: he has to be practicing, right? Those are two separate
- 7:10Speaker 1: things in terms of There were IR doesn't have to
- 7:13Speaker 1: happen until Saturday. And so he doesn't necessarily have to
- 7:15Speaker 1: be out there practicing. So that, that one was surprising,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but with Will Campbell, I, I hope that there's a
- 7:24Speaker 1: lot of different angles in terms of him fighting through
- 7:26Speaker 1: this injury. And I think that last year they'd said
- 7:30Speaker 1: to us that he got put on injured reserve for
- 7:33Speaker 1: the knee sprain to save him from himself.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And this feels a little bit like that. I also
- 7:39Speaker 1: can't help but think about Caleb Lomu over his shoulder,
- 7:42Speaker 1: just kind of lurking there in the background as a
- 7:45Speaker 1: potential left tackle as well. So you just hope that
- 7:49Speaker 1: Will Campbell is not going to push himself too hard
- 7:52Speaker 1: to to get out there in these games. When we
- 7:56Speaker 1: saw what happened last year, when he played a little
- 7:58Speaker 1: bit compromised on that knee, it just wasn't nearly as
- 8:01Speaker 1: effective as he was before that.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 5: I like the court I saw from him yesterday of,
- 8:05Speaker 5: you know, just saying it felt much different than last
- 8:07Speaker 5: year's injury. So I thought that was, you know, positive,
- 8:09Speaker 5: but I thought the same thing. I'm like, you know, does,
- 8:11Speaker 5: does the coaching staff know Will's getting dressed right now
- 8:14Speaker 5: to go out to practice? Like he's ready to go.
- 8:17Speaker 5: So hopefully he, that experience from last year. And I
- 8:20Speaker 5: think certainly he, He must have heard the criticism that
- 8:23Speaker 5: everybody had to say.
- 8:23Speaker 1: He just wasn't the same after the knee injury. Even
- 8:26Speaker 1: Elliot Wolfe said it. So I don't think we're saying anything.
- 8:28Speaker 5: I think the last thing he's going to want to
- 8:30Speaker 5: do is try to push through another injury. I hear
- 8:32Speaker 5: what you're saying about Lomu, but I'm excited to see
- 8:36Speaker 5: him get an opportunity. I think we were all encouraged
- 8:38Speaker 5: by him playing left tackle last week and the opportunities
- 8:41Speaker 5: he's got. He's had some snaps at the jumbo tight
- 8:44Speaker 5: end spot. He's gotten his feet wet in terms of
- 8:47Speaker 5: the NFL and just what the speed of the game
- 8:49Speaker 5: is like. You'd hate to just have to throw them
- 8:52Speaker 5: right in there, you know, without any experience. So I am,
- 8:55Speaker 5: I'm assuming Campbell's going to be out this week. Um,
- 8:58Speaker 5: and I, you're going to be leaning on, on Lomu and,
- 9:01Speaker 5: you know, some really interesting matchups with these jets as
- 9:03Speaker 5: edge rushers.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I would say kind of a strength of the
- 9:06Speaker 1: jets defense at this point is some of these young
- 9:08Speaker 1: addressers they have, but I would probably lean towards a
- 9:12Speaker 1: hundred percent healthy Lomu over 75% Campbell in this game. And, uh,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I try to hype up the Jets every year when
- 9:20Speaker 1: they play them. It's kind of hard. They're feisty. They're
- 9:23Speaker 1: feisty this year. That's a way to compliment them. Well,
- 9:25Speaker 1: they have veterans.
- 9:26Speaker 5: I think that's the thing. You look at DeMario Davis.
- 9:29Speaker 5: The guys who have been around. Drake said that yesterday
- 9:32Speaker 5: in his press conference that they have a better play
- 9:35Speaker 5: style now. You can tell they're maybe playing a little
- 9:37Speaker 5: bit more towards the... identity that Aaron Glenn wants. We
- 9:41Speaker 5: hear Mike variable talk a lot about.
- 9:42Speaker 1: His team's identity. Um, so I, you know, I, I
- 9:45Speaker 1: do think the jets are feisty.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Uh, and like you said, the edge rushers, well, McDonald's
- 9:49Speaker 5: always been, you know, pretty good guy off the edge.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Uh, and Ibarra is, you know, productive guy and power rusher.
- 9:54Speaker 5: And of course, you know, the, the, the rookie David Bailey,
- 9:57Speaker 5: just with no, no, gloves, no arm sleep, nothing. I mean,
- 10:00Speaker 5: just bare arms out there. He's hard to miss 31
- 10:02Speaker 5: on a number.
- 10:03Speaker 1: He explodes out of his stance with, with some speed. Yeah,
- 10:07Speaker 1: he does. He does. Yeah. So I would expect to
- 10:10Speaker 1: see Loma left tackle in terms of running backs. how
- 10:13Speaker 1: do we feel about Raymond, Ramondre Stevenson, Corey Kiner, Lynn Larrison,
- 10:18Speaker 1: that probably as your top three of Travion can't go. Yeah.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Well you, you got Lynn Larrison Island real estate early
- 10:24Speaker 5: in the process. This might be the time when that
- 10:26Speaker 5: real estate starts to go up. Maybe I got, maybe
- 10:29Speaker 5: I'm a masochist with these kinds of things, but I like,
- 10:31Speaker 5: I'm like, let's give some young guys some opportunities, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 5: it could turn out badly.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I know.
- 10:37Speaker 5: But just generally this season, I think anytime you get
- 10:39Speaker 5: an opportunity for one of these young guys that you
- 10:41Speaker 5: know are, that you're going to have to build around
- 10:44Speaker 5: it and be part of the future. It's a good
- 10:46Speaker 5: thing to get them that experience. But I'm interested to
- 10:48Speaker 5: see Landler. Behind the scenes a little bit, he's been working.
- 10:51Speaker 5: We saw him week one, didn't get a lot of opportunities.
- 10:54Speaker 5: And Corey Kiner came in.
- 10:56Speaker 1: The fumble was bad off the top, but then I.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Thought he was pretty good. So what can Corey Kiner do?
- 11:02Speaker 5: The thing that scares me is putting it all on Ramondre.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I know Ramondre can.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Do it all.
- 11:06Speaker 5: He's a great pass blocker. He makes people miss in
- 11:09Speaker 5: the backfield. And he could play every down if you
- 11:11Speaker 5: wanted him to. But I don't want him to. I
- 11:13Speaker 5: want to try to keep him a little fresh. We're
- 11:15Speaker 5: just in mid-October here. We've got a long ways to go.
- 11:18Speaker 5: So protecting Ramondre. And we talked about this. This was
- 11:21Speaker 5: my thing. Do you save him for third down? Because
- 11:24Speaker 5: you know you trust him in pass protection. These guys
- 11:26Speaker 5: have great edge rushers. So that's where you need Ramondre
- 11:30Speaker 5: the most. And then give Corey Kiner the early down carries.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 11:34Speaker 5: How they divide that up will be really interesting to me.
- 11:38Speaker 5: and how much opportunities Larrison get.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe just the backup kind of thing. Yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and they blitz a lot, the Jets too, which we'll
- 11:46Speaker 1: talk about. So looking back at week one when Henderson
- 11:49Speaker 1: was out in Seattle, it was Ramondre on 57 snaps.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He played 85%, 85.1 if you want to be exact. 85%
- 11:55Speaker 1: of the offensive snaps. Corey Kiner had eight, and Larrison
- 11:58Speaker 1: had two.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Now.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Corey Kiner had just gotten here. So maybe he's a
- 12:08Speaker 1: little bit more prepared to play a little bit more.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But to your point about third down, most of those
- 12:14Speaker 1: snaps that they played were early down snaps where they're
- 12:16Speaker 1: playing in base offense. And a lot of Larrison, I think,
- 12:20Speaker 1: caught a check down that went for a decent yardage
- 12:22Speaker 1: in that game. So they they were more to your
- 12:26Speaker 1: point of. Well, let's give the backups a drive here
- 12:30Speaker 1: and let's let Romandre rest versus situational packages and stuff
- 12:34Speaker 1: like that, like we've seen in the past. So if
- 12:36Speaker 1: it does end up being that, my guess is, is
- 12:38Speaker 1: that Kiner will probably get, I don't know, eight to
- 12:41Speaker 1: 10 carries between the tackles just to kind of lessen
- 12:43Speaker 1: the load a little bit on Romandre. I thought Kiner
- 12:46Speaker 1: ran really well. I know that he fumbled and the
- 12:49Speaker 1: fumble was bad, but he had three or four positive
- 12:52Speaker 1: runs in the game last week. And even the one
- 12:54Speaker 1: he fumbled on, I thought he made a guy miss
- 12:56Speaker 1: and was, you know, made some productive yards out of
- 12:58Speaker 1: it before he fumbled. And then he had the big
- 13:01Speaker 1: 32 yarder at the end, which, you know, it was
- 13:03Speaker 1: garbage time, but it was still really nice. cut back
- 13:06Speaker 1: all the way across the grain to hit that play.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So I thought that his running style and his elusiveness
- 13:13Speaker 1: translated a little bit. He just got to hang on
- 13:15Speaker 1: to the ball. But if you didn't fumble on that play,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I know, again, how was the play, right? But when
- 13:21Speaker 1: you don't– taking out the fumble, I thought that he
- 13:24Speaker 1: actually ran pretty well last week in the game. So
- 13:27Speaker 1: I'm not totally– concerned yet. Yeah. About, especially if it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: short term, seeing that Travion Henderson's practicing a little bit. Yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 5: I love your point about against Seattle, Corey kind of
- 13:38Speaker 5: just gotten here. So how comfortable were they? How many
- 13:40Speaker 5: plays did they really have? But, you know, you saying
- 13:42Speaker 5: that number, it still makes me feel like they're just
- 13:45Speaker 5: going to go with remand rate in this game. And,
- 13:46Speaker 5: you know, hopefully, you know, and next week you got
- 13:50Speaker 5: another team coming up that you're going to want to
- 13:51Speaker 5: run the ball.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So, right.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I just hate being afraid of injuries. That's probably my only,
- 13:56Speaker 5: has it reservation about this whole thing? Because again, Like
- 13:59Speaker 5: I said, Bermondry's their best back. They're starting to show
- 14:01Speaker 5: a little something. I felt like last week was a
- 14:03Speaker 5: step forward for.
- 14:04Speaker 1: The run game.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Now I'd also credit the offensive line for that. So,
- 14:07Speaker 5: you know, you put Lomo in there. Does it change
- 14:09Speaker 5: a little bit? I mean, I liked how they were
- 14:10Speaker 5: getting Lomo out in space. I think that's one of
- 14:12Speaker 5: the things with, you know, Patriots tackles that are maybe
- 14:15Speaker 5: a little bit on the shorter side, tiny bit, but
- 14:18Speaker 5: they can really run well. So, you know, finding what
- 14:21Speaker 5: he does well, Lomo, maybe that adds another dimension to
- 14:23Speaker 5: the run game.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I mean, maybe it hurts them.
- 14:25Speaker 5: You felt like AVT and Will Campbell and, Jared Wilson,
- 14:28Speaker 5: we're all coming together. And, you know, I think that's
- 14:30Speaker 5: such a big part for me early in the season
- 14:32Speaker 5: is that offensive line. I'll get on the same page,
- 14:34Speaker 5: understanding the timing. You've talked a lot about handing the
- 14:36Speaker 5: stunts off, those kinds of things. But in the run game,
- 14:38Speaker 5: I think it's, it's a really big deal.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And.
- 14:40Speaker 5: You know, if those guys are blocking, well, it's not
- 14:42Speaker 5: going to matter who's carrying the ball. They're going to
- 14:43Speaker 5: get a few yards right out of the gate.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah. I, you know, I see all the charts where,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, top right is good. Bottom left is bad.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Too many charts on the NFL. I see them all.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I eat them up. I bookmark all of them. I'm
- 14:54Speaker 1: just like, where's the Patriots? Yeah. Covered up. Okay. My, my,
- 14:57Speaker 1: my favorite one that I saw recently was Gonzalez Davis
- 15:03Speaker 1: and Marcus Jones. I saw that one. All in the
- 15:05Speaker 1: top right.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And coverage grade and separation.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 1: So just maybe the best secondary in football right now
- 15:12Speaker 1: resides here in Foxborough. But the one I saw this
- 15:16Speaker 1: morning was success rate and frequency of outside zone runs.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So stretch run plays. And Ramondre Stevenson and Travion Henderson,
- 15:25Speaker 1: the bottom, bottom left corner. Like Travion, Ramondre is basically
- 15:29Speaker 1: off the chart, right? Like in terms of. both a
- 15:32Speaker 1: success rate and frequency of outside zone runs. Now that
- 15:35Speaker 1: makes sense. He's not a speed guy, but you mentioned,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know, getting outside the tackles and get those guys
- 15:41Speaker 1: on the move a little bit more. And I just,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I don't think that they've hit that button quite enough
- 15:46Speaker 1: yet with Travion. I thought the last couple of weeks
- 15:48Speaker 1: they were starting to do it more and more. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's what's so discouraging about the injury is I think
- 15:53Speaker 1: they were kind of figuring out his usage. Like they
- 15:56Speaker 1: had them on the jet sweeps. They had them on,
- 15:58Speaker 1: Some stretch runs, some toss plays, and they were getting
- 16:01Speaker 1: them outside the tackles and trying to use his speed
- 16:04Speaker 1: a little bit more. And then, of course, he gets hurt.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And here we are. So, you know, his two runs
- 16:09Speaker 1: last week that were 10 plus yards, a draw, which
- 16:12Speaker 1: fits him perfectly in a jet sweep. Yeah. And so
- 16:16Speaker 1: it's like, all right, well, we're getting away from. you know,
- 16:19Speaker 1: the duo runs and the inside zones where you're asking
- 16:22Speaker 1: him to read it out and find the holes and
- 16:24Speaker 1: things like that. That's probably not his strong suit. So
- 16:27Speaker 1: I thought that they were starting to cook it up
- 16:29Speaker 1: a little bit with Travion Henderson. And then of course he,
- 16:31Speaker 1: he takes a jet sweep and gets hurt. Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 5: You know, another thing I saw, I think you posted
- 16:35Speaker 5: last week was just their lack of success with a
- 16:37Speaker 5: fullback too.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 5: So it's, no matter what run scheme it feels like
- 16:41Speaker 5: they're hitting, it's not quite working. And sometimes, I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 5: we've talked about it, the backs maybe don't quite exactly
- 16:46Speaker 5: fit the scheme. Sometimes, too, like Ramondre, big guy, powerful guy,
- 16:50Speaker 5: but maybe not the guy who's going to burn to
- 16:51Speaker 5: the edge and get that and make a big gain.
- 16:54Speaker 5: So it's frustrating with Travion Henderson. I mean, I'm not
- 16:57Speaker 5: saying it's just injuries. Second year, you want to see
- 17:01Speaker 5: the guy take a significant step forward, maybe round out
- 17:04Speaker 5: his game a little bit. And I think this year
- 17:05Speaker 5: we've seen kind of, like you said, similar things. Maybe
- 17:08Speaker 5: they're finding out how to use him a little bit better,
- 17:10Speaker 5: but just a lot of work has to go into,
- 17:12Speaker 5: seems like, to managing the run game right now. And
- 17:14Speaker 5: he'd love to just see them be able to get
- 17:16Speaker 5: some momentum going. Felt like they were getting it last week,
- 17:19Speaker 5: and then as soon as they do, out goes Henderson.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It's been two years of this, and I've
- 17:25Speaker 1: ranted about this before, but it's been two years where
- 17:27Speaker 1: they haven't really been a great run game. And they've
- 17:30Speaker 1: had some big runs, and Vrabel's talked about this, where
- 17:33Speaker 1: they've popped some big ones, which... takes your efficiency, your average,
- 17:37Speaker 1: your yards per carry, and kind of inflates it a
- 17:40Speaker 1: little bit. But what they're looking at is like down-to-down
- 17:43Speaker 1: consistency in the run game. And last week, Ramondre ran great,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but he was breaking tackles and making guys miss in
- 17:49Speaker 1: the backfield to create, you know, even just get back
- 17:51Speaker 1: to the line of scrimmage on some of his runs.
- 17:54Speaker 1: That's not what you want to see. You know, you
- 17:55Speaker 1: want to see them get four or five yards down
- 17:58Speaker 1: the field before first contact sometimes, or at least like
- 18:01Speaker 1: run through some arm tackles through the gap that they
- 18:03Speaker 1: can easily break. Instead of doing stuff like that. So
- 18:08Speaker 1: it's it's all of the above. It's it's the offensive
- 18:10Speaker 1: line blocking its execution. It's fitting the runs to the
- 18:13Speaker 1: style of the running backs. It's scheme. It's everything. But
- 18:17Speaker 1: they need to have at least I don't think they
- 18:19Speaker 1: need to be a dynamic running team. Like, I don't
- 18:21Speaker 1: need to look at them because of Drake May in
- 18:23Speaker 1: the passing game. that's going to be their, their most
- 18:26Speaker 1: efficient aspect of their team, but just be able to
- 18:29Speaker 1: run the ball a little bit as a counter, as a,
- 18:32Speaker 1: something to think about that sort of thing for the
- 18:34Speaker 1: defense would go a long way. I think for this team.
- 18:37Speaker 1: For sure.
- 18:37Speaker 5: And even like short down situational, I don't have a
- 18:40Speaker 5: lot of confidence like the last couple of years with them,
- 18:42Speaker 5: you know, third and one and a half, third and two,
- 18:45Speaker 5: those like, those seem tough for them. And yeah, you know,
- 18:48Speaker 5: reminder is a big guy, but I just, I continue
- 18:50Speaker 5: to think this is the final frontier for this offense. Uh,
- 18:53Speaker 5: The Jets, they got good pass rushers. You get in
- 18:55Speaker 5: third and long against the Jets, these guys are going
- 18:58Speaker 5: to tee off. And David Bailey is going to be
- 18:59Speaker 5: able to use all his immense talents that he has
- 19:02Speaker 5: to get after Drake May. And so I think that's just,
- 19:05Speaker 5: you know, it's almost like, remember Ben Jarvis, Green Ellis?
- 19:08Speaker 5: He's like the anti Travion Henderson. Like he's never going
- 19:10Speaker 5: to give you a 60 yard run, but he's going
- 19:12Speaker 5: to give you four and a.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Half every single time.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:15Speaker 5: You need no fumbles. You need six, give you four
- 19:17Speaker 5: and a half. You need to give you four and
- 19:18Speaker 5: a half. You know, they got to find a.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Way to meet in the middle a little bit more
- 19:22Speaker 1: and have that, you know, consistency.
- 19:24Speaker 5: And, and, you know, to your point though, I don't
- 19:25Speaker 5: need it to be a juggernaut rushing attack, but I
- 19:28Speaker 5: just want them situationally to be good. And, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 5: I'm just the fullback thing hasn't quite worked out yet
- 19:34Speaker 5: because of injuries. Travion hasn't quite worked out this year
- 19:37Speaker 5: yet because of injuries. And, I feel like we're just
- 19:39Speaker 5: kind of waiting for that to get going. And maybe
- 19:41Speaker 5: when it gets cold and you need the running game
- 19:43Speaker 5: a little bit more, maybe that's when it all starts
- 19:44Speaker 5: to come together.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, that's a, I remember last year, then
- 19:48Speaker 1: we'll move to the Jets. Uh, McDaniel's talking about wanting
- 19:52Speaker 1: to play from under center and all the different elements
- 19:55Speaker 1: and all the different advantages that you get from it,
- 19:57Speaker 1: whether it's a play action, whether it's run pass, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 1: kind of, um, you know, not being predictable run pass.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Cause when you're in shotgun, it kind of limits like
- 20:07Speaker 1: what runs you can actually call when you're in the shotgun.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Cause you're in, you know, the back is, is offset
- 20:12Speaker 1: to the left or to the right. So the, the
- 20:14Speaker 1: point of attack is different and all that kind of stuff.
- 20:17Speaker 1: But he also mentioned the weather and the fact that
- 20:19Speaker 1: they play in Voxborough in the winter. And, you know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: we talk a lot about Drake Mays performance in the
- 20:24Speaker 1: post season last year, Well, if they had had a
- 20:27Speaker 1: run game, you know, when it was snowing against, you know,
- 20:30Speaker 1: Denver or if it was when it was, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: sleeting or whatever it was in the games here, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and all that stuff. And it's 25 degrees out. You know,
- 20:38Speaker 1: that's when LeGarrette blunt down your throat used to be
- 20:42Speaker 1: a big deal.
- 20:43Speaker 6: Right.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Like that. That's when that was really helpful to that,
- 20:47Speaker 1: to those teams. So that's where my frustrations with the
- 20:50Speaker 1: run game come from. It's not because I don't think
- 20:52Speaker 1: they can score. They can score without it. Now, this
- 20:55Speaker 1: time of year, it's when you get to January and
- 20:58Speaker 1: February and you're asking Drake May to, you know, just
- 21:01Speaker 1: sling the rock all over the place. Like in that
- 21:04Speaker 1: way again. Yeah, right. It's not a good way to live. Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Jets. So, you know, this is
- 21:11Speaker 1: this is how we do it. We do Jets offense
- 21:13Speaker 1: versus Patriots defense, Patriots defense, Jets offense. And then after
- 21:17Speaker 1: the break, we'll do key matchups. But my big picture
- 21:20Speaker 1: thought on the Jets. I think we're all still. not
- 21:25Speaker 1: sold on this regime with the jets. They certainly don't
- 21:29Speaker 1: have a quarterback of the future yet. So we can't
- 21:31Speaker 1: really judge them on that just yet. But you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: is Aaron Glenn, their coach moving forward. And I always
- 21:38Speaker 1: look at these division match-ups of like, is this a
- 21:41Speaker 1: pairing of coach and quarterback that the Patriots are going
- 21:44Speaker 1: to have to worry about here moving forward? I'm not
- 21:47Speaker 1: going to hold it against Aaron Glenn just yet that
- 21:49Speaker 1: he doesn't have a quarterback, you know? Um, but in
- 21:53Speaker 1: terms of how he plays defense, I always have thought
- 21:56Speaker 1: going back to his days, uh, with the lions as
- 21:59Speaker 1: the lions defensive coordinator that he wants to blitz and
- 22:03Speaker 1: he wants to play man to man like that. That's
- 22:05Speaker 1: what the lions did. That's what the jets did last year. Uh,
- 22:08Speaker 1: in his first season as the head coach, uh, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 1: last year they were 45% man coverage rate. That was
- 22:14Speaker 1: third highest in the NFL. Uh, if you play man
- 22:17Speaker 1: and you blitz Drake may, you are going to lose. Like,
- 22:21Speaker 1: I don't want to get, you know, do it please.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But you are going to lose the game. I can
- 22:25Speaker 1: guarantee it. Like if you give him single coverage opportunities
- 22:28Speaker 1: on the outside and you try to heat him up,
- 22:31Speaker 1: you are, he is going to, to pick you apart.
- 22:34Speaker 1: He just is. So I'm very interested to see from
- 22:37Speaker 1: Glenn's perspective and they have, you know, I put this,
- 22:39Speaker 1: the splits in game plan. They have, played a lot
- 22:43Speaker 1: more cloud or too high coverages this year, I think
- 22:47Speaker 1: because they realize that their corners just aren't good enough
- 22:49Speaker 1: to play that much man-to-man coverage. So a good game
- 22:54Speaker 1: plan against Drake May would be for them to back
- 22:57Speaker 1: off a little bit, to play the two high safeties,
- 23:00Speaker 1: to keep everything in front of them, make the Patriots march.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Not only is that going to take away the deep
- 23:06Speaker 1: shots that we saw last week from Drake May against
- 23:08Speaker 1: the Raiders, but it's also going to shorten the game.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And I think that's the way the Jets win.
- 23:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:14Speaker 1: The Jets win a 17 to 14, 20 to 17
- 23:18Speaker 1: kind of ugly rock fight.
- 23:20Speaker 6: Yep.
- 23:20Speaker 1: If they get into a shootout with the Patriots, the
- 23:22Speaker 1: Patriots are going to win this game by two touchdowns easily.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:25Speaker 5: No, I love it because this is a great, this
- 23:28Speaker 5: will be a great example of does Aaron Glenn have
- 23:30Speaker 5: the kind of game plan capability to play to his
- 23:33Speaker 5: team's strengths and try to, you know, be a little
- 23:36Speaker 5: bit more of a game plan defense. And, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 5: I noticed last week their man coverage was through the
- 23:41Speaker 5: roof last week. A really high rate, I think of 40%,
- 23:43Speaker 5: well above the league average. So, you know, was that
- 23:46Speaker 5: a Deshaun Watson kind of thing? So if you do
- 23:49Speaker 5: see Aaron Glenn come in here and he's throwing two
- 23:50Speaker 5: high safeties at him, A little cover six, maybe mixed in.
- 23:55Speaker 5: And maybe it'll show you. Now, again, the next hill
- 23:58Speaker 5: to cross for Aaron Glenn, of course, is like clock
- 23:59Speaker 5: management and those kind of things. So if you get
- 24:01Speaker 5: down to a close game. That's Paul's side of the street.
- 24:04Speaker 5: We'll leave that for P.U. But you get in a
- 24:06Speaker 5: close game and it's like, all right, you schematically adjusted
- 24:09Speaker 5: to take away what Drake does best. I mean, it
- 24:11Speaker 5: just seems obvious to me. you look at this Patriots offense,
- 24:14Speaker 5: you're scared of Drake May. Are you scared of the
- 24:16Speaker 5: Patriots run game?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Not really.
- 24:18Speaker 5: So I would say, let's make sure Drake doesn't throw
- 24:20Speaker 5: it deep, force them to try to run the ball,
- 24:22Speaker 5: put them in, try to get them in third and
- 24:23Speaker 5: long where our pass rushers do well. And if he
- 24:27Speaker 5: picks us apart underneath and goes down the field, we'll
- 24:29Speaker 5: tip the cap to him. But that's going to be
- 24:31Speaker 5: him playing the game he doesn't want to play.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a man or a mouse game for
- 24:35Speaker 1: me with Aaron Glenn. Like, if he comes in here
- 24:38Speaker 1: with a game plan that, is like that. That is,
- 24:41Speaker 1: you know, two high safety shells and more zone coverage
- 24:44Speaker 1: and what they like to play and spinning the dial
- 24:47Speaker 1: and tricky twos, cover six, all that kind of stuff. Respect.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Like I'll tip the cab. I'll say, Hey, you know, that,
- 24:55Speaker 1: that shows me some that this, you know, he has
- 24:58Speaker 1: some growth as a coach, you know, this year, like
- 25:01Speaker 1: I mentioned to some of the numbers they, they did,
- 25:03Speaker 1: they have increased their amount of cloud coverage, which is
- 25:07Speaker 1: covered two or cover six where they have, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: a player underneath and a player over the top one
- 25:12Speaker 1: side of the field. So this year they're playing 36.9%
- 25:17Speaker 1: cloud coverage, which is second highest in the league. His
- 25:20Speaker 1: first year with the jets, they were dead last in
- 25:23Speaker 1: cloud coverage. So they, they have played it a lot
- 25:26Speaker 1: more specifically playing a lot more cover six and you know,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I think we've seen over the last handful of weeks,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and granted, it's not Seattle, and I think that maybe
- 25:36Speaker 1: Nate Tice was probably the first one on this. Was
- 25:39Speaker 1: the cover six stuff a Seattle thing, or was that
- 25:41Speaker 1: Drake May was really his kryptonite? And I think we're
- 25:45Speaker 1: finding out maybe a little bit that teams like the
- 25:47Speaker 1: Raiders and stuff probably can't execute cover six the level
- 25:50Speaker 1: that the Seahawks can, and Drake May's found some success.
- 25:54Speaker 1: But it's still... takes away the explosives to an extent.
- 25:58Speaker 1: And it still makes him, uh, March to field to
- 26:01Speaker 1: an extent. You mentioned last week against the Browns, 63.6%
- 26:03Speaker 1: blitz rate against the Sean Watson with 41% man coverage, uh,
- 26:10Speaker 1: you can't play that way against this offense. Like if you,
- 26:12Speaker 1: especially if AJ Brown is basically fully operational and you
- 26:16Speaker 1: give him those one-on-ones on the outside, we saw what
- 26:19Speaker 1: that looked like last week when the Raiders got caught
- 26:22Speaker 1: in some of those one-on-one coverages. So I'm fascinated to
- 26:25Speaker 1: see what the Jets defense does because statistically on paper,
- 26:29Speaker 1: they've been pretty decent on that side of the football.
- 26:32Speaker 1: You know, I think they're what 11th and past DVOA
- 26:35Speaker 1: right now and eighth against the run and EPA. So they're,
- 26:38Speaker 1: they're a team that, they go out and they trade
- 26:41Speaker 1: for Minka Fitzpatrick. They signed to Mario Davis. They draft
- 26:44Speaker 1: David Bailey. This defense is looking a little bit better
- 26:48Speaker 1: than it was last year. Now Paul's thing is always, well,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the offense can't score. It isn't really matter what the
- 26:54Speaker 1: defense is doing, but defensively, I think that this isn't,
- 26:58Speaker 1: this isn't a, a pushover kind of opponent with the
- 27:01Speaker 1: jets are rolling out there.
- 27:02Speaker 5: No, and you know, Harrison Phillips been around for a while.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I mean, we know DeMario Davis has been in the limit.
- 27:06Speaker 5: This is what is this like seventh stint with the
- 27:08Speaker 5: jets feels like he's been around forever.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Underrated career for Navarro Davis.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Yeah, and still a really active guy and sweat, a
- 27:15Speaker 5: little bit of a disappointment down in Tennessee, but a
- 27:17Speaker 5: big-bodied guy. So that's a good matchup for Jared Wilson, too,
- 27:21Speaker 5: who I think has really been coming on. Not to
- 27:23Speaker 5: say I've been critical, but I've just wanted to let
- 27:26Speaker 5: Jared Wilson show me what kind of player he is.
- 27:27Speaker 5: A little bumpy maybe out of the gate. Vrabel said so.
- 27:31Speaker 5: But they've got veterans everywhere. The other guy I really
- 27:33Speaker 5: like is number one, Thomas, Azare Thomas. I just thought he,
- 27:36Speaker 5: you know, third round pick last year, but looks like
- 27:39Speaker 5: a real active corner. Nobody in their secondary is a
- 27:42Speaker 5: superstar yet. That's probably, you know, one of the spots
- 27:44Speaker 5: they still need to address because let's face it, the
- 27:47Speaker 5: premium positions, they got a really good wide receiver. They
- 27:49Speaker 5: got good edge players. They have, you know, their two tackles.
- 27:52Speaker 5: They're just waiting for that shutdown corner and the quarterback.
- 27:56Speaker 5: But lots of things to like on this defense. I just,
- 27:58Speaker 5: I don't think they're going to curl up into a
- 28:01Speaker 5: ball and just say, you know, uncle and let the
- 28:04Speaker 5: Patriots run right over them. I think they're going to
- 28:06Speaker 5: come out and play tougher than certainly they did last
- 28:08Speaker 5: year in that second-to-last game of the season where it
- 28:11Speaker 5: was noncompetitive.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah, this game feels a little bit more like the
- 28:13Speaker 1: first one. And that was a Thursday night game, so
- 28:15Speaker 1: it was a little bit fluky and all that kind
- 28:17Speaker 1: of stuff. But I kind of see the Patriots winning
- 28:20Speaker 1: this game, but more in like a ho-hum divisional win
- 28:23Speaker 1: versus like what last week was against the Raiders where
- 28:26Speaker 1: they blew doors. Moving over to the Jets offense. This
- 28:30Speaker 1: is a this is a Frank Reich offense. Now, this
- 28:32Speaker 1: was an interesting decision, I thought, from from Glenn. I
- 28:35Speaker 1: guess they kind of needed a scapegoat after going three
- 28:38Speaker 1: and 14 last year. And they move on from Tanner Eggstrand,
- 28:42Speaker 1: who was a hot up and coming coaching commodity and
- 28:46Speaker 1: the Lions coaching staff. He came over from Detroit with
- 28:48Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn. and I actually thought with limited resources last year, Engstrand,
- 28:53Speaker 1: but until the wheels came off late in the season,
- 28:55Speaker 1: he was doing some scheming. Like he was doing some
- 28:57Speaker 1: stuff that I thought was interesting. And, uh, I thought
- 29:00Speaker 1: it was pretty good with Justin Fields and like getting
- 29:02Speaker 1: his legs involved. Uh, he was a first time play
- 29:04Speaker 1: caller though, first time coordinator. And so they went with
- 29:07Speaker 1: experience this year, uh, with Frank Reich. Uh, it's still
- 29:11Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, experience versus stale is like
- 29:15Speaker 1: always like the conversation with guys like this, you know,
- 29:17Speaker 1: his offenses in that tree, which is really the Andy
- 29:21Speaker 1: Reed West coast offense, even though he didn't coach directly
- 29:25Speaker 1: with Andy Reed, he did with Doug Peterson in Philadelphia
- 29:29Speaker 1: that this offense in this system used to give the
- 29:32Speaker 1: Belichick off the defense, a lot of problems, you know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: it was a lot of mesh and a lot of
- 29:36Speaker 1: crossing routes and running backs on wheels, Corey Clement, you know,
- 29:40Speaker 1: and stuff like that. So this used to be a
- 29:42Speaker 1: little bit of a thorn in the Patriot side in
- 29:44Speaker 1: terms of the offense that the jets are now running. Obviously,
- 29:48Speaker 1: it's a very, very different, you know, Patriots defense now.
- 29:52Speaker 1: But I thought one of the most interesting quotes yesterday,
- 29:56Speaker 1: maybe a little bit too honest from Kevin Bayard on
- 29:58Speaker 1: Gino Smith, just saying that it looks like Gino Smith
- 30:02Speaker 1: is trying really hard not to turn the ball over.
- 30:05Speaker 1: And so he's so he's holding the ball more because
- 30:08Speaker 1: he's passing up. kind of NFL open type of stuff
- 30:12Speaker 1: or to knowledge open. Yeah. Right. To not put the
- 30:15Speaker 1: ball in harm's way. So he said, you know, the
- 30:17Speaker 1: biggest difference between him and Kirk cousins, Gino and Kirk
- 30:19Speaker 1: cousins is Kirk cousins would see the first read. If
- 30:23Speaker 1: the first read wasn't open, he was immediately going to
- 30:25Speaker 1: his check down. It was, but the ball was coming out.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Like the ball is coming out quickly. Whereas Gino, he
- 30:31Speaker 1: holds the ball a little bit longer. And the, the
- 30:33Speaker 1: time to throw is back that up. He's over three seconds,
- 30:35Speaker 1: 19th in the league. The, the, the thing about Gino though,
- 30:40Speaker 1: you can take that one of two ways. You could
- 30:42Speaker 1: take that as criticism that he's not aggressive enough and
- 30:44Speaker 1: he's kind of holding the ball too long, which I
- 30:47Speaker 1: think is what Byron was kind of saying. Yeah. Or
- 30:49Speaker 1: you could take that as he'll hang in there. Like
- 30:52Speaker 1: he'll hang in the pocket. And we saw that last
- 30:54Speaker 1: year when he was here with the Raiders, the Patriots
- 30:56Speaker 1: tried to blitz him and come after him. And he
- 30:58Speaker 1: would sit on his back foot and wait until the
- 31:00Speaker 1: very possible last second and then throw a deep ball
- 31:04Speaker 1: and against one-on-one coverage. And the Raiders won that game. So,
- 31:08Speaker 1: you know, I think that there's, You can look at
- 31:10Speaker 1: that either way, but it was probably one of the
- 31:12Speaker 1: more honest quotes I've heard from a player from Bayard yesterday.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I found it really interesting.
- 31:17Speaker 5: Yeah, and I mean, I would just say, looking at
- 31:18Speaker 5: just the targets, I mean, Carewell says 42. The next
- 31:21Speaker 5: highest is Kenyon Sadiq at 21. So he's doubling the
- 31:24Speaker 5: targets of their second guy. And by the way, the
- 31:25Speaker 5: second guy is out with a concussion. So, you know,
- 31:28Speaker 5: just has ultimate confidence in our guy Spider-Man there, as
- 31:32Speaker 5: I've begun calling him, because.
- 31:33Speaker 1: He's a superhero like that. He's bendy. He's hard to
- 31:36Speaker 1: get a read on.
- 31:37Speaker 5: So I think that's where it starts with, you know,
- 31:39Speaker 5: take him away. Maybe that'll help him, you know, go
- 31:42Speaker 5: through these reads a little bit slower, allow the pass
- 31:44Speaker 5: rush time to get there. But looking at those two
- 31:46Speaker 5: games they had as the last two years, when he
- 31:48Speaker 5: came here with Seattle, I mean, 75% completion percentage, 327 yards,
- 31:52Speaker 5: one Oh three passer rating.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And last year it's.
- 31:55Speaker 5: 70.6 completion percentage, 362 yards.
- 31:58Speaker 1: So, I mean, you're, you say he's still under 680 yards.
- 32:01Speaker 1: The last two games, he's coming to Gillette.
- 32:03Speaker 5: So I do think that that's, you know, beyond the stats,
- 32:06Speaker 5: it's just, he's not going to be intimidated coming in here.
- 32:08Speaker 5: He's played, he's been, he even beat the Patriots when
- 32:09Speaker 5: he was part of the Jets in overtime. That was,
- 32:11Speaker 5: you know, back in, in New York, or I should
- 32:13Speaker 5: say New Jersey. But I think that's the thing that, that,
- 32:16Speaker 5: that scares me a little bit that, you know, you've
- 32:18Speaker 5: got a veteran. He is not going to blink just
- 32:20Speaker 5: like the rest of these veterans, like, like Davis on
- 32:22Speaker 5: the other side of the ball.
- 32:23Speaker 1: They're, they're going to come in here. They're not going
- 32:24Speaker 1: to be intimidated.
- 32:25Speaker 5: And, You know, hearing Garrett Wilson talk yesterday saying this
- 32:28Speaker 5: is a huge-ass game for us, they know what's at stake.
- 32:31Speaker 5: They can, you know, get back into this conversation with
- 32:33Speaker 5: a win over a streaking Patriots team.
- 32:35Speaker 1: So, you know, I'm getting fired up now, Ev. I'm like, oh, crap,
- 32:38Speaker 1: are we going to lose this game?
- 32:39Speaker 2: No.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Am I afraid of Geno Smith again? This is what
- 32:41Speaker 1: we do. We do talk up the opponent. We tend
- 32:43Speaker 1: to try to do that a little bit. I am
- 32:47Speaker 1: with you, though, that, like, last week I thought they
- 32:48Speaker 1: rattled Kirk Cousins. I thought they blitzed him early. They
- 32:51Speaker 1: brought a lot of zeros early on in that game.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And then he just wasn't seeing the field cleanly after that.
- 32:57Speaker 1: You know, they were dropping out of it, spinning into
- 32:59Speaker 1: different coverages. And I didn't think that he I thought
- 33:02Speaker 1: he passed up some open receivers and just wasn't really
- 33:04Speaker 1: seeing the field very well after they kind of got
- 33:08Speaker 1: to him early on with pressure. I'm not sure if
- 33:11Speaker 1: that that, you know, is going to get rattled like that. Like,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I don't necessarily see it the same way now. I
- 33:17Speaker 1: do see. Garrett Wilson is there Brock Bowers, right? Like
- 33:21Speaker 1: it's obviously Garrett Wilson. And then a whole lot of
- 33:24Speaker 1: things that don't scare you. So if you're a Patriots defense,
- 33:27Speaker 1: I don't think this game is all that different from
- 33:30Speaker 1: last week and you're getting Gonzalez back to hopefully cover
- 33:33Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson in this game. So this is one of
- 33:36Speaker 1: those where I, you know, I, I compare it to
- 33:39Speaker 1: basketball in the NBA where I kind of just put
- 33:42Speaker 1: Gonzalez one-on-one on Garrett Wilson and then clamp down on
- 33:46Speaker 1: everything else. And if Garrett Wilson goes for a buck
- 33:48Speaker 1: 20 in the touchdown, that's going to be their only
- 33:51Speaker 1: offense for the entire day. Kind of like Bowers last week.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And I don't even expect that to happen because I
- 33:56Speaker 1: think Gonzalez is going to win that matchup more times
- 33:58Speaker 1: than not. So it's a, it's another one of those
- 34:01Speaker 1: offenses that when you look at the splits, uh, specifically
- 34:04Speaker 1: against man coverage, they've really struggled because they just don't
- 34:07Speaker 1: really have a lot of guys that scare you. And
- 34:10Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson's really the only one that separates against man
- 34:13Speaker 1: coverage consistently, whether it's a number one corner, it's doubles
- 34:17Speaker 1: or brackets or whatever. You can kind of take him
- 34:19Speaker 1: out of the game as the only real option and
- 34:22Speaker 1: engine of the offense. Now their run game has been
- 34:25Speaker 1: hit or miss, you know, Braylon Allen had a big
- 34:28Speaker 1: game last week and he's a tough guy to tackle.
- 34:30Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like Brees Hall is going to play
- 34:32Speaker 1: in this game.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 1: But Braylon Allen last week had 102 of his 116
- 34:37Speaker 1: yards came after contact. He broke eight tackles, bouncing off
- 34:41Speaker 1: guys at the line of scrimmage and turning zero-yard runs
- 34:45Speaker 1: into 18-yard runs and things like that. So he ran over...
- 34:49Speaker 1: a guy on the goal line last week. And I
- 34:51Speaker 1: was like, Oh boy, like that was a collision, you know?
- 34:54Speaker 1: So he's a tough guy to tackle kind of like gentee,
- 34:58Speaker 1: you know, in that he's not the most elusive, but
- 35:01Speaker 1: he's a tough guy to tackle. And he's got some
- 35:03Speaker 1: speed once he gets moving, kind of like a train
- 35:05Speaker 1: runaway freight train. So those are the two guys to me.
- 35:08Speaker 1: If you can stop the run game, don't let Breland
- 35:11Speaker 1: Allen break 17 tackles. And you can take Garrett Wilson
- 35:14Speaker 1: out of this.
- 35:15Speaker 5: I just don't really see what else the Jets have
- 35:17Speaker 5: to throw at you at that point. Yeah, that was,
- 35:19Speaker 5: I mean, I liked Braylon Allen coming out.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I just thought he was, I think he was like
- 35:22Speaker 1: 20 years old when he came out.
- 35:23Speaker 5: So you knew he was a developmental player, even though
- 35:25Speaker 5: he was already, you know, 6'2, 230, whatever it is.
- 35:28Speaker 5: I think the weather might have helped a little bit
- 35:30Speaker 5: last week with some of the missed tackles on him
- 35:31Speaker 5: as well. But, you know, let's also just say that,
- 35:35Speaker 5: you know, first round pick Kenyon Sadiq, first round pick
- 35:37Speaker 5: Omar Cooper just came back.
- 35:38Speaker 1: From IR, he's practicing. Is he going to go?
- 35:40Speaker 5: They do have other pieces, I feel like, that are
- 35:43Speaker 5: waiting in the wings. They've just been hurt. But I
- 35:46Speaker 5: like your plan. I'm not, you know, I don't think
- 35:48Speaker 5: that Braylon Allen is, you know, if it's third and one,
- 35:50Speaker 5: I'm worried about him, but can't let him get loose.
- 35:52Speaker 5: And I think it'll be a really good test for
- 35:54Speaker 5: the Patriots run defense. Because like I said, I think
- 35:56Speaker 5: that will be my key. I would say, all right,
- 35:58Speaker 5: let's try to jam Braylon Allen down their throat. See
- 36:00Speaker 5: if we can keep Drake May off the field and
- 36:03Speaker 5: see if, you know, because I would expect, like we're saying,
- 36:07Speaker 5: that you're going to have a problem trying to get
- 36:08Speaker 5: it to Garrett Wilson, unless that you are willing to
- 36:10Speaker 5: make tight window throws with Gonzalez on them.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Yeah. So last thing here there, they have the highest
- 36:16Speaker 1: rate of short passes in the NFL. 61% of Gino
- 36:20Speaker 1: Smith passes are traveling under 10 yards. And if the
- 36:24Speaker 1: Patriots do come out and play a decent amount of
- 36:26Speaker 1: man with Gonzalez back in this game, this Frank Reich
- 36:29Speaker 1: tree used to give the Patriots man coverages, a lot
- 36:32Speaker 1: of problems. And they used to, they run a lot of,
- 36:35Speaker 1: of what Andy Reed calls his music family of concepts.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Like the things they call them like scat and maestro
- 36:41Speaker 1: and things like that. And it's all different variations of mesh.
- 36:44Speaker 1: So you just have shallow crossing routes intersecting. Usually the
- 36:48Speaker 1: running back is on like on a wheel or something
- 36:50Speaker 1: like that, but they have, you know, they have Deacon,
- 36:53Speaker 1: they have maestro, they have scat, they have all these
- 36:55Speaker 1: different things and they're all part of like, This this
- 36:58Speaker 1: package of plays that they call the music family. And
- 37:01Speaker 1: that used to really give the Patriots, you know, always
- 37:04Speaker 1: think back to Super Bowl 52 and like all those
- 37:07Speaker 1: different types of games. So if you're going to play
- 37:10Speaker 1: a lot of man coverage against Frank Reich, I do
- 37:12Speaker 1: think that he has a lot of man beaters. up
- 37:15Speaker 1: his sleeve. So I'm interested to see how, uh, that
- 37:18Speaker 1: sort of chess match between Reich and Zach core goes, uh,
- 37:21Speaker 1: because Zach core has been mixing in a lot of,
- 37:23Speaker 1: you know, cover twos and a lot of different, uh,
- 37:25Speaker 1: zone coverages as well. So, uh, that's going to be
- 37:29Speaker 1: the question, like on third down, if Reich is calling
- 37:31Speaker 1: shallow crossers and, and core anticipates that, and he drops
- 37:36Speaker 1: them out into cover too. And it's like, all right,
- 37:38Speaker 1: you know, Bring out the punter, right? Like, you know,
- 37:41Speaker 1: that's going to be good. So we'll see how that
- 37:43Speaker 1: sort of back-and-forth play calling goes.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Funny, back when I was coaching flag football, we did
- 37:47Speaker 5: run mesh, and we kept running mesh against a team
- 37:49Speaker 5: that was running zone in flag football. And I'm like,
- 37:52Speaker 5: nobody can get open, guys. We need to run away
- 37:54Speaker 5: from man and sit in zone. But, you know, what
- 37:56Speaker 5: that says to me, though, too, is opportunity. The Patriots
- 37:59Speaker 5: get a lead. You know, take away, like, force them
- 38:01Speaker 5: to have to make chunk plays. Because, you know, once
- 38:04Speaker 5: you get behind, we've seen plenty of NFL teams that
- 38:06Speaker 5: just don't have that deep passing game. that you're kind
- 38:08Speaker 5: of stock and you got to now execute and the
- 38:11Speaker 5: pressures on and that's a that's a way i think
- 38:13Speaker 5: the game could play really favorably into the patriots hands
- 38:16Speaker 5: get a lead force gino smith to make plays if
- 38:19Speaker 5: they get out if they if the jets get a
- 38:21Speaker 5: lead they're able to kind of lean on to alan
- 38:23Speaker 5: lean into the short passing game then all of a
- 38:25Speaker 5: sudden gary wilson's cat catching a little cross underneath and
- 38:27Speaker 5: he's turning it up for twenty thirty yards uh.
- 38:29Speaker 1: that that's not going to be the formula for success
- 38:32Speaker 1: yes but i think a quick break after this but
- 38:34Speaker 1: I had one of my film junkie friends of mine
- 38:37Speaker 1: who has all the playbooks and all that stuff. I
- 38:40Speaker 1: was talking to him, and he sent me a screenshot
- 38:43Speaker 1: of a play that the Andy Reid tree runs. And
- 38:49Speaker 1: it was the play that Corey Clement scored the touchdown
- 38:51Speaker 1: on in Super Bowl 52. And I was like, you
- 38:53Speaker 1: just had to you had to bring that up, didn't you?
- 38:55Speaker 1: You didn't get both feet down. You just say you
- 38:57Speaker 1: had to go there like running backs on linebackers and
- 39:01Speaker 1: wheel routes. I know. I know. I got it. I
- 39:03Speaker 1: got it. All right. We're going to take a quick
- 39:05Speaker 1: break and then we're going to do key matchups.

- 41:20Speaker 1: love is blind guy? Yeah. No, no, no. I didn't
- 41:23Speaker 1: think first season. So Jess and I were watching the
- 41:25Speaker 1: new seasons out and it takes place. It's Boston. The
- 41:28Speaker 1: cast is from Boston and they had, they were talking
- 41:32Speaker 1: about what their favorite spots were to go in Boston.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And some of them were, spots that Jess and I
- 41:36Speaker 1: have frequented. It was pretty funny, but there was one
- 41:38Speaker 1: guy that was, I think I'm like 99% sure was
- 41:42Speaker 1: rocking some Brunt boots because they looked exactly like the
- 41:45Speaker 1: ones that we got. And I was like, these are definitely,
- 41:48Speaker 1: and I paused it and I looked at it. I
- 41:50Speaker 1: was like, he's wearing my boots. So Brunt workwear makes

- 42:11Speaker 1: first order at Brent work, work.com slash Patriots or with
- 42:15Speaker 1: coupon code P A T S. So yeah, it was, uh,
- 42:18Speaker 1: it was funny. I always, you know, like watching those
- 42:21Speaker 1: shows that have a little bit of Boston flavor. Cause they,
- 42:23Speaker 1: they started bringing up landmarks and things that, uh, you know, we, uh,
- 42:27Speaker 1: we always are around like Boston blue. They were shooting
- 42:31Speaker 1: a scene like in, uh, a park that has a
- 42:34Speaker 1: dog park in it that we take Atlas to sometimes.
- 42:37Speaker 1: And we were like, Oh my God, that's, that's the
- 42:38Speaker 1: North end dog park. Come on, Ev. We lived in L.A.
- 42:41Speaker 1: This is all we know. I know. That's true. That's true.
- 42:45Speaker 1: All right, let's get into some key matchups here in
- 42:47Speaker 1: this game on Sunday. This has been a staple of
- 42:51Speaker 1: Bartha and I's going all the way back to the
- 42:53Speaker 1: Clintus days is key matchups. So we kept this one around.
- 42:58Speaker 1: My first one, we've mentioned him a couple of times.
- 43:00Speaker 1: David Bailey, the Jets' first-round pick, number two overall. And
- 43:04Speaker 1: every week I feel like poor Morgan Moses is getting
- 43:07Speaker 1: the toughest matchup, whether it's TJ watt, Max Crosby this week,
- 43:12Speaker 1: it's David Bailey, 83% of David Bailey's rushes have come
- 43:16Speaker 1: over the right tackle. So we'll see if they test
- 43:20Speaker 1: Lomu or whoever Campbell or whatever is on it on
- 43:23Speaker 1: a left tackle with Bailey. But yeah, I've been pretty
- 43:27Speaker 1: impressed with him. He's right now. He's up there in
- 43:30Speaker 1: all the metrics, but he's leading all rookies right now
- 43:32Speaker 1: with 20 pressures. A lot of those came last week
- 43:34Speaker 1: at three. three sacks last week, but he is a,
- 43:38Speaker 1: a speed demon. He's got a lot of speed and
- 43:41Speaker 1: we've seen was Moses with the foot have maybe a
- 43:44Speaker 1: little bit of issues getting out of his stands at times.
- 43:46Speaker 1: So I do expect them to, to try to, you know,
- 43:49Speaker 1: those high side speed guys, you chip them, then they
- 43:52Speaker 1: don't really have much place to go. So I do
- 43:53Speaker 1: expect them to chip them quite a bit.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Who do you help? You know, who do you help
- 43:57Speaker 1: him in Lomu?
- 43:57Speaker 5: Is it, you know, we don't, I don't think either
- 43:59Speaker 5: one of us want to go back to the days
- 44:00Speaker 5: of keeping two guys into block and sending three out
- 44:03Speaker 5: into the, into the route. So, And just what a
- 44:06Speaker 5: performance this year from Morgan Moses. And, you know, last
- 44:09Speaker 5: year he came in, provided that, like, stability, leadership. It
- 44:12Speaker 5: felt like the Patriots had been searching for for, like, three,
- 44:15Speaker 5: four years at the tackle spots. It's just been such
- 44:18Speaker 5: an absence of talent there. And he came in and,
- 44:21Speaker 5: you know, last year gave you, I mean, we all
- 44:22Speaker 5: kind of were like, is he going to make it?
- 44:24Speaker 1: He made it. They managed him really well. But this
- 44:27Speaker 1: is another, you know, young talent. young legs.
- 44:30Speaker 5: I mean, that to me is what I remember watching
- 44:32Speaker 5: Bailey last year in college, one game. And it's like, wow,
- 44:34Speaker 5: that guy's awesome. And then you're like, oh crap, the jets,
- 44:36Speaker 5: the jets could get him. Um, so big matchup.
- 44:39Speaker 1: You can't let Drake get hit early.
- 44:41Speaker 5: I think that's the big thing to me is allowing
- 44:44Speaker 5: him to get comfortable in the pocket, you know, protect
- 44:46Speaker 5: him early talking about, it seems like a thing now everywhere,
- 44:49Speaker 5: even with Zach court, light them up early with heavy blitzes.
- 44:53Speaker 5: And then we're going to mostly drop out for the
- 44:54Speaker 5: rest of it and hope he's confused.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So, um, tough matchup.
- 44:58Speaker 5: And I, and I hope that another week, Morgan Moses
- 45:00Speaker 5: can deliver another solid performance.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:02Speaker 1: He, you know what? He he's been okay fighting through
- 45:04Speaker 1: the injury. Like it's not like he's been giving up
- 45:06Speaker 1: like eight, 10, six pressures every week. It's been like
- 45:09Speaker 1: three or four. And there's like one or two reps
- 45:12Speaker 1: where I think that he just is a little bit
- 45:14Speaker 1: slow to get off because of the foot. But in general,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I think he's held up pretty well, even through the injury.
- 45:19Speaker 1: So kudos to him for playing through the injury. But,
- 45:22Speaker 1: you know, Bailey, the two first round tackles, Membu, Fashanu, Sadiq,
- 45:28Speaker 1: when he's been healthy, Garrett Wilson, obviously like this is
- 45:31Speaker 1: the core that the Jets have now. I'm not a
- 45:34Speaker 1: hundred percent sure Garrett Wilson's going to be part of
- 45:36Speaker 1: the long term just yet. Um, but those guys that
- 45:40Speaker 1: I mentioned, the Shanu Membu Bailey, I think are really
- 45:44Speaker 1: the building blocks for what this jets team is hoping
- 45:47Speaker 1: to be moving forward. And hope, you know, for them,
- 45:49Speaker 1: they hope to get a quarterback and sort of go
- 45:51Speaker 1: from there. As we talked about, like talent, it hasn't
- 45:53Speaker 1: been a problem for the jets. Like they've had high
- 45:55Speaker 1: round draft picks. I mean, it is what it is.
- 45:58Speaker 1: That's the quarterback position.
- 45:59Speaker 5: And you know, I'd, Imagine that there are plenty of
- 46:01Speaker 5: Jets fans out there like, how the hell did the
- 46:03Speaker 5: Patriots go from Tom Brady? And then, you know, you
- 46:05Speaker 5: struggle for four years, and then all of a sudden
- 46:07Speaker 5: you get, you know, Drake May back, another elite quarterback.
- 46:10Speaker 1: So that's the big question. But, you know, if it
- 46:12Speaker 1: didn't work out with.
- 46:13Speaker 5: Aaron Glenn, what an appealing job having guys on either
- 46:17Speaker 5: side of the trenches. We'll see what happens there with,
- 46:20Speaker 5: you know, with Garrett Wilson.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I agree with you. I'm sure he's getting frustrated. But
- 46:25Speaker 1: I expect... they're going to go down swinging this week
- 46:27Speaker 1: with Garrett Wilson. I mean, if he doesn't get at
- 46:28Speaker 1: least 10 targets, I'll be shocked.
- 46:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 46:30Speaker 1: So speaking of Garrett Wilson, that was my next one. Uh,
- 46:33Speaker 1: Christian Gonzalez versus Garrett Wilson. It does sound like Gonzalez
- 46:36Speaker 1: is going to play. Uh, this will be round four of, uh,
- 46:39Speaker 1: these two guys going against each other. They both been
- 46:42Speaker 1: kind of hurt for certain seasons that they haven't faced
- 46:44Speaker 1: each other every year. Uh, since they were one draft
- 46:48Speaker 1: class class off, Garrett Wilson was 2022. Gonzalez was 2023, uh,
- 46:54Speaker 1: but Gonzalez has played him 51 routes. Two of those
- 46:58Speaker 1: games that they played against each other out of the
- 47:00Speaker 1: three previous, he's shadowed him. He catches for 72 yards
- 47:05Speaker 1: in the touchdown. That's it. That's a, that's, basically a
- 47:08Speaker 1: game's worth of routes.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 47:10Speaker 1: And he's basically held him pretty much in check that
- 47:13Speaker 1: that's not too shabby. Now Wilson's never had a great
- 47:15Speaker 1: quarterback necessarily throwing him the ball might've had Rogers in
- 47:19Speaker 1: one of those games, but still, you know, late career Rogers. Right.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But you know, it's a, it's a fun matchup every year.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I love the styles cause I think they, they move
- 47:30Speaker 1: very similarly. So I think that that's why Gonzalez gives
- 47:33Speaker 1: Wilson some problems is because I think that, their movements
- 47:37Speaker 1: and sort of their style of play is very similar.
- 47:39Speaker 1: So I'm looking forward to seeing those two go against
- 47:41Speaker 1: each other again.
- 47:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, just a loose athlete. I'd say, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 5: you've made the comp to Brock Bowers. I would say
- 47:47Speaker 5: both Brock Bowers and Garrett Wilson are kind of quarterback
- 47:49Speaker 5: proof now. I think they've proven that no matter who
- 47:51Speaker 5: they're playing with, they're going to produce. Geno Smith has
- 47:54Speaker 5: developed an immediate chemistry with Garrett Wilson. And, you know,
- 47:57Speaker 5: that's the biggest thing to me is just, we know it,
- 48:01Speaker 5: they know it. He's their key guy. How do we
- 48:03Speaker 5: make sure we don't let him cost us the game.
- 48:06Speaker 5: And even if it requires more attention than Gonzalez or
- 48:09Speaker 5: you go back to the old Bill thing where you're
- 48:11Speaker 5: doubling him with the other side. But again, you're really
- 48:14Speaker 5: worried about putting Gonzalez. It feels like a waste to
- 48:16Speaker 5: try to use him. Let's just go good on good
- 48:19Speaker 5: as we like to say with Garrett Wilson and hope
- 48:21Speaker 5: that Christian Gonzalez just limits him. That's all, you know,
- 48:23Speaker 5: just don't let him beat the Patriots.
- 48:25Speaker 1: So I wish that Garrett Wilson would be, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 1: they would trade him here, but they're not going to
- 48:29Speaker 1: trade Garrett Wilson to the Patriots. And I'm not saying
- 48:31Speaker 1: that they're necessarily going to trade him at all, but
- 48:33Speaker 1: they already traded sauce Gardner. It feels like their window
- 48:36Speaker 1: is maybe going to be a little bit too late
- 48:38Speaker 1: for Garrett Wilson to really be an impact player there.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Cause even if they draft one of these quarterbacks next year,
- 48:44Speaker 1: let's say he's even good. Like that's still a two
- 48:47Speaker 1: to three year process as we've seen with Drake may
- 48:50Speaker 1: that until you're really contending and operational. And now with
- 48:53Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson, he's 2022 draft class. We're talking about year seven,
- 48:57Speaker 1: year eight until he's really like, you know, humming in
- 49:00Speaker 1: an offense with a great quarterback. So trade them outside
- 49:04Speaker 1: of the division. Don't trade them in the AFC to
- 49:06Speaker 1: a contender, but I would love to see Garrett Wilson
- 49:08Speaker 1: with like a real quarterback and like no disrespect to
- 49:11Speaker 1: Gino Smith, but like, yeah, not Josh Allen. I don't
- 49:14Speaker 1: think they would do that or Patrick Mahomes or anybody
- 49:17Speaker 1: in the AFC, but you know, if you traded. Garrett
- 49:20Speaker 1: Wilson someplace where he's playing with a real stud at quarterback,
- 49:24Speaker 1: like that would be really fun to watch. And like,
- 49:26Speaker 1: it would be something, something to see like him. he's
- 49:29Speaker 1: in a thousand yard receiver walking off the bus with
- 49:32Speaker 1: Gino Smith and Zach Wilson and Aaron Rogers is corpse.
- 49:36Speaker 1: And like, it doesn't matter. So one of those guys,
- 49:40Speaker 1: you know, Deandre Hopkins was that way for a while
- 49:43Speaker 1: in Houston. I did match job. Didn't matter. He was
- 49:47Speaker 1: putting up numbers. It kind of reminds me of the
- 49:48Speaker 1: same of that. Yeah. Last key match up here went
- 49:51Speaker 1: a little outside the box. Cause you know, offense to
- 49:54Speaker 1: the jets, but it's kind of hard to pick on like,
- 49:56Speaker 1: you know, some talent on that side. Drake May versus
- 49:59Speaker 1: Minka Fitzpatrick. I just think that when you face a
- 50:03Speaker 1: ball hawking safety like Minka and you that's really the
- 50:07Speaker 1: formula for the Jets in this game. Muddy it up defensively,
- 50:11Speaker 1: control the clock, run the ball, create some turnovers like
- 50:14Speaker 1: that sort of thing. Now, they haven't really been great
- 50:18Speaker 1: at creating turnovers over the last two years. And Fitzpatrick
- 50:21Speaker 1: just snapped their NFL record streak. a couple of weeks
- 50:24Speaker 1: ago in Chicago, they went 20 straight games without an interception.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Can you imagine the Patriots going 20 straight games without
- 50:32Speaker 1: an interception on defense? I just don't know what's worse.
- 50:34Speaker 5: Like, is an indictment on your pass rush that they're
- 50:36Speaker 5: not throwing bad balls?
- 50:37Speaker 1: Is it an indictment on your coverage? Like, they're not
- 50:39Speaker 1: ball hawks.
- 50:39Speaker 5: Like, it's just an indictment of the whole defense.
- 50:41Speaker 1: All of the above. So he had a really nice
- 50:44Speaker 1: interception in week four against Chicago. He had a nice
- 50:47Speaker 1: pass breakup last week that I thought he probably should
- 50:50Speaker 1: have picked. He dropped it. He's still got some juice.
- 50:54Speaker 1: He's 29, but he's still got some range. He's still
- 50:56Speaker 1: got some instincts, a little bit like Kevin Bayard, where
- 50:59Speaker 1: he just kind of knows where he's supposed to be.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I've always loved Mika Fitzpatrick's game. I think he's a
- 51:04Speaker 1: great player. Really experienced.
- 51:06Speaker 5: I mean, physical last week, he saw him laying the
- 51:09Speaker 5: lumber as well. So, you know, something for Drake to
- 51:11Speaker 5: be concerned about. I just, you know, it goes back
- 51:13Speaker 5: to our scheme talk of, you know, how does Aaron
- 51:15Speaker 5: Glenn use him in the secondary?
- 51:16Speaker 1: I mean, you know, he's the piece in the secondary, right?
- 51:18Speaker 1: I mean, I like Thomas.
- 51:19Speaker 5: I thought he looks like a pretty good little young corner,
- 51:21Speaker 5: but you know, really it's about Mika Fitzpatrick on that
- 51:24Speaker 5: back end, but you know, you're playing more cover too,
- 51:26Speaker 5: or you take an out of what he does best.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I mean, do you want him in the center of
- 51:29Speaker 1: the field?
- 51:29Speaker 5: Make, you know, playing Robert coming down a little bit, Um,
- 51:32Speaker 5: so I think that's a, it's a good call out.
- 51:35Speaker 5: I just think for Drake may, if you protect him,
- 51:37Speaker 5: you give him time, you keep them clean early, you
- 51:39Speaker 5: get them into that rhythm.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Uh, it doesn't matter who's back there. He's going to
- 51:41Speaker 1: shred them.
- 51:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 51:42Speaker 1: The two plays he's made on the ball. We're both
- 51:44Speaker 1: in cover two as like a half field safety. Cause
- 51:46Speaker 1: I don't know if he at this stage has the
- 51:48Speaker 1: post safety range to go all the way into the
- 51:51Speaker 1: sideline from the single high shell. So like they've put
- 51:54Speaker 1: them in half field and one of them, he just
- 51:56Speaker 1: jumped an in breaker that Tyson Bajan like kind of
- 51:59Speaker 1: telegraphed and then The other one was a, it was
- 52:01Speaker 1: a whole shot, which we love to talk about. And
- 52:05Speaker 1: I thought Watson was a little bit under thrown a
- 52:07Speaker 1: little bit late to it, but it was open initially
- 52:10Speaker 1: and he closed pretty quickly and was able to dive
- 52:12Speaker 1: in front of the receiver and break up the past.
- 52:14Speaker 1: So he's still got some range, maybe more in like
- 52:17Speaker 1: the split safety range than the post range at this
- 52:21Speaker 1: stage of his career. But you know, look, I, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: think that that's a guy that again, if the jets
- 52:26Speaker 1: are going to make this a ball game, It's going
- 52:28Speaker 1: to be turnovers, a couple timely turnovers, run game, Garrett Wilson,
- 52:33Speaker 1: the defense in the pass rush, you know, creating havoc.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And it's going to be kind of a rock fight.
- 52:37Speaker 1: It's not going to be, you know, Jets win 35-31.
- 52:41Speaker 1: That's not going to happen, I don't think. No, I mean,
- 52:43Speaker 1: you mentioned, you know, Gino not throwing an interception. Is that, like,
- 52:46Speaker 1: lack of aggression? Is that him being clean?
- 52:48Speaker 5: Like, you know, will turnovers be a huge factor in
- 52:51Speaker 5: this game? Drake playing his first clean game last week.
- 52:55Speaker 5: Like you say, you never know what's going to pop up,
- 52:57Speaker 5: but I think it bodes well for the Patriots' defense.
- 52:59Speaker 5: Their aggressiveness, I just like them as setting the tone.
- 53:03Speaker 5: And Zach Kors is doing a great job. And I
- 53:05Speaker 5: think going against a veteran quarterback again this year, I mean,
- 53:08Speaker 5: you've seen Rodgers.
- 53:09Speaker 1: You're now seeing Geno Smith. You saw, you know, last week,
- 53:13Speaker 1: what's his face? Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins.
- 53:15Speaker 5: So, you know, those things, I think this is their
- 53:18Speaker 5: kind of matchup. Get after this veteran quarterback and just
- 53:20Speaker 5: try to, if not force him into mistakes, just force
- 53:23Speaker 5: him to punt.
- 53:24Speaker 6: Yeah. Yep.
- 53:24Speaker 1: No, that's, that's absolutely it. All right. We're going to
- 53:27Speaker 1: wrap it up because my voice is, uh, it made
- 53:29Speaker 1: it through the 53 minutes and I'm not going to,
- 53:32Speaker 1: you know, take a chance here. Uh, hopefully Barth is,
- 53:35Speaker 1: is back next week. I think he should be.
- 53:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:37Speaker 1: We're, we're worried about you. Uh, he doesn't, he didn't
- 53:40Speaker 1: have a stomach bug. He's not, you know, it's not me.
- 53:43Speaker 1: All right. It's Alex. He's got something else going on.
- 53:46Speaker 1: I want to clear that air. I do want to
- 53:47Speaker 1: do a little bit of housekeeping, though, for next week
- 53:50Speaker 1: because of the Thursday night football game. Tuesday, catch 22
- 53:53Speaker 1: is normal time recapping the game against the Jets from
- 53:56Speaker 1: 10 to 11. We are going to do the show
- 53:59Speaker 1: Wednesday of next week instead of Thursday, though, from 10
- 54:02Speaker 1: to 11. to talk about this bears game with my guy,
- 54:06Speaker 1: Ben Johnson. So, you know, I'm excited to break that
- 54:08Speaker 1: one down. So Tuesday and Wednesday next week, adjusting for
- 54:13Speaker 1: the Thursday night football game. And then I'm going to Chicago,
- 54:16Speaker 1: which is one of my favorite cities on the road
- 54:18Speaker 1: to go to. Favorite coordinator, a favorite head coach, his team.
- 54:22Speaker 1: I mean, there's a lot going on for you. Like
- 54:23Speaker 1: why watching the bears offense, although it hasn't had Caleb
- 54:26Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks, which is a little disappointing.
- 54:28Speaker 1: That's the, that's the most fun that I have. It's
- 54:30Speaker 1: like either when they play the 49ers or when they
- 54:32Speaker 1: play the bears like that, that's the most exciting time
- 54:36Speaker 1: of the year for me. So that'll be a fun
- 54:38Speaker 1: one to break down. So Tuesday and Wednesday next week,
- 54:40Speaker 1: same time, 10 to 11 on catch 22. And hopefully
- 54:43Speaker 1: Barth will be back and we'll see you guys at deuce.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Thank you for filling in. I catch 20 deuce. Yeah.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Catch 22. I really appreciate it. All right. P is
- 54:51Speaker 1: up in five minutes. Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for
- 54:56Speaker 1: tuning into the show.
- 54:57Speaker 5: If you really want to help us, make sure you
