- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny Conversation, brought
- 0:04to you by Jags, the leader in high performance aftermarket car
- 0:08parks. Remember to go to jags.com for
- 0:11everything you need for your hot rods as Rusty says to fix your
- 0:16hot rod up. Everybody wanted to know more
- 0:22about these trophies, so we talked about the 1998 Bud
- 0:27Shootout. They know all about that.
- 0:29But they saw this big, beautiful trophy here, the 1989 Winston.
- 0:36So let's talk about this race, All right?
- 0:40I think it's going to take about 8 or 10 minutes to talk about
- 0:43this. So we're we're in the late
- 0:45stages of the Winston, and you see Darrell Waltrip up there and
- 0:50you're driving the crap out of your your Kodiak Pontiac.
- 0:55What are you thinking as you're you're catching him?
- 0:58Well, I'm going to back up just a second.
- 1:00Yeah. Yeah, we started the race and
- 1:02that car I had was so fast. It was unreal.
- 1:05So we just jetted out and won the first stage.
- 1:08OK, all right. Came down, put 4 tires in the
- 1:10car and went out for second stage.
- 1:12There was 3 stages, went out for the second stage and all of a
- 1:15sudden the car is just really loose, really bad loose.
- 1:17I'm holding on to it. Darrell gets past me, he wins
- 1:20the second stage. I come down Pit Rd.
- 1:23They change tires for the final stage.
- 1:26Barry Dots, my crew ship comes across to radios with Rusty we
- 1:29we figured the problem out. So what happened?
- 1:32Man, you're not going to believe this.
- 1:33We accidentally got the right rear tire on the right front and
- 1:36the right front on the right rear.
- 1:38Oh my gosh. And there was 1/2 an inch
- 1:40difference in tire stagger, meaning that I'll never forget
- 1:43the numbers. We were running an 88 1/2 inch
- 1:47diameter right front tire and an 88 right.
- 1:49Rear OK, hold on. Remember this.
- 1:52Everybody's amazed by Mark Martin rattling off his chassis
- 1:57numbers from his ASA days. How the fans are going to want
- 2:01to know right now. How do you remember that?
- 2:03It's you've got to know it to be successful.
- 2:05I know you and I thought about it.
- 2:07We had a lot of people thought about, let's put it this way,
- 2:10that's the only way I knew how to do it.
- 2:11I had to control my own destiny. I had to understand every setup
- 2:15on my car. I had to know that the the
- 2:17compression, the rebound on my shocks.
- 2:19I had to know the air pressures. I had to know the the tire
- 2:21stagger and that's just the way it was.
- 2:24So in 9/19/89 so many years ago you still remember the
- 2:29circumference of the tires. OK, go ahead I I did my best.
- 2:34You you don't remember last week, but he remembers 1989, the
- 2:38size of the tires. So you start to race the cars,
- 2:42we practice the car, it's all set.
- 2:45It's got 88 1/2 inch right front tire on.
- 2:47It's got an 88 inch right rear tire on it and so it would have
- 2:51had an 87 left rear and where they had an 87 left front
- 2:57diameter, OK And that's the way the the tire, the car loved to
- 3:01be. So we won the first segment in a
- 3:04big manner, just drove off. Second segment the car is just
- 3:07loose. So I'm like this is weird.
- 3:09It just doesn't happen that bad, all right.
- 3:11Barry Dodson comes across after the second segment.
- 3:14He says we found a problem. We've accidentally put the right
- 3:16rear in the right front, meaning we had a big right rear tire in
- 3:19the car, which made it super loose.
- 3:21All right. So now the last segment, we get
- 3:23the car right, we get the tires back, right?
- 3:26Darrell takes off, he jets out, he jets out.
- 3:29And I'm like, man, this hot rod of mine is back to normal now.
- 3:32It's really feeling good. So I run him down, get into Turn
- 3:363, and I got right to his bumper.
- 3:38And so I said didn't get the job done.
- 3:41So now we're getting down like 5 laps to go.
- 3:43OK 'cause I think it was only like a 10 lap run or something.
- 3:45Quarter of $1,000,000 to win. Quarter of a million, Darrell
- 3:48says. I hope you're choking that 2.
- 3:50Definitely, he says. I hope hope you're choking that
- 3:53200, but it was 250. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:55So anyway. You know, three or four laps to
- 3:58go. I see all that baby down the
- 3:59back straight. We just think his hand on like a
- 4:01real hot rod, you know? And I I sail it down.
- 4:03Then it turned 3. I never did less than screw it.
- 4:06I'm not lifting. I've held a wide open and went
- 4:08in this long drift and I got right to his left for 1/4.
- 4:11Pounders barely touched them and I thought maybe he wiggle a
- 4:16little bit but he end up spinning out anyway.
- 4:19I went on to win the race. The craziest thing was is that
- 4:24my great friend Rick Hendrick owned the team that Kenny
- 4:28Schrader was driving. The boys put a phone call into
- 4:32Kenny Schrader and said hey, he was running second at the time.
- 4:35Kenny was on the restart of this race.
- 4:38So you spin Darrell out, caution comes out.
- 4:41Now they're going to restart the race.
- 4:43Yeah, and Kenny's running second.
- 4:45He gets a phone call from his boys.
- 4:47Hey, Ruffle. Rusty up a little bit, yeah, He
- 4:50pulls up along. Sabi and I looked over him like
- 4:53this. I said don't even think about
- 4:54it. Because, because we grew up with
- 4:57Kenny Schrader in Saint Louis. Oh, homies, I said.
- 5:00I can read your mind, I said. Sign language.
- 5:03I said don't even think about it.
- 5:04They dropped the hammer and I was gone.
- 5:07And then I'll Hot Rod just checked out and I won the
- 5:08Winston got the 250 grand and all hell broke loose.
- 5:12The whole damn infield was in a fight.
- 5:13Everybody's screaming and hollering.
- 5:15When it was all said and done, I'm in Victory Lane.
- 5:19I. After Victim Lane was over, they
- 5:20put me in an ambulance because they thought they were going to
- 5:23kill me. The fans were.
- 5:24They were so mad at me, they put me in an ambulance, stuck me
- 5:27out, took me up to the top of the Speedway tire for his
- 5:30presentation. I walked in there and everybody
- 5:33booed me. Everybody.
- 5:34No Boo Boo it. Was the most humiliating thing
- 5:39in the world. They put me back in ambulance
- 5:42and. I didn't know this.
- 5:43It drove me to my house in Concord.
- 5:47I went to bed that night. That took two police officers
- 5:50stationed in my bedroom. That night, at my house
- 5:53downstairs in the living room, my daughter Katie gets up in the
- 5:56middle of the night. She walks out of her room and
- 5:59she sees two police officers there.
- 6:01She comes flying. Upstairs she goes, Mom and Dad.
- 6:03Mom and Dad. There's, there's and the Katie's
- 6:05only like 4 or five years old. Yeah, Mom and Dad.
- 6:07Mom and Dad. There's police officers.
- 6:08What's going on? I said.
- 6:11I looked at her. So, Katie, it was a long night.
- 6:13It's a long story. I'll tell you tomorrow.
- 6:15Wow, so. And so they, I mean, the fans
- 6:17were going to kill me. They were so bad at me.
- 6:19It's unreal. I want to stay about this race.
- 6:22First of all, that's unbelievable.
- 6:25And a lot of people think to themselves, you know, why are
- 6:27people so passionate about it? But I want to go to you out
- 6:32running and and straighten the story out.
- 6:35We're still talking about this race, but you told me a story
- 6:38where fans threatened to kill you when you and Dale Earnhardt
- 6:43were going at it. That happened at Atlanta, where
- 6:46some fan looked at you, said I'm going to kill you, Rusty
- 6:48Wallace. You've been roughed up before.
- 6:51All that you know, Kenny, that happens to a lot of people where
- 6:54they're they got a favorite driver and then they got the
- 6:56competition going on and all the hell breaks loose.
- 6:59That happens. The biggest thing I had happened
- 7:02to me in my life was the Darrell Waltrip thing in the All Star
- 7:05Race works. I got this trophy right here.
- 7:07For that's the but. That was a tough one.
- 7:10But I will tell you right now, before we go much farther,
- 7:12Darrell Waltrip and I are some of the best friends.
- 7:14I love that dude. He's one of the coolest man on
- 7:16the whole planet, you know, And him and I are both in the Hall
- 7:18of Fame together. And that's nice.
- 7:20That's what happens when you get in the Hall of Fame.
- 7:22You take all the past memories of all those competition.
- 7:24You can remember them, but the competition stops and we start
- 7:28respecting each other's career and that's what the Hall of Fame
- 7:31does for us. And Daryl and I are super tight.
- 7:33We're great friends and Daryl and I.
- 7:36But switching gears on you a little bit now you you talked
- 7:39about Dale Senior, so Dale Senior, you know, obviously very
- 7:42popular guy and there there's no doubt, man, on the short tracks,
- 7:46I was winning them races on the big tracks.
- 7:48He was winning the races. We go to Charlotte, I'd win the
- 7:51Coke 600. I'd win Michigan, I'd win, you
- 7:54know those intermediates a little bit.
- 7:55And we were back and forth and we're the big buddies.
- 7:58People didn't know that, man, we're racing like hell.
- 8:01And we, we vacationed a lot. Hell, we would go down into
- 8:04Bahamas, my wife Patty, his wife Theresa and all of us and the
- 8:08NASCAR boys, and we'd have a great old time down there and
- 8:11we're wonderful friends. Always have been to the day
- 8:14died. And then we get on the racetrack
- 8:16and he'd work for his team and do his deal.
- 8:18I work for my team, I do my deal and he'd race back and forth and
- 8:21that's it. The fans were going crazy up and
- 8:24down, but I drove my car as hard as I could drive it.
- 8:26He drove his as hard as hard as he could drive it and and I won
- 8:30my fair share, you know, from let's let's call it 93 to 2005
- 8:38to the day I quit, you know, But 93 to 2000, it was magical
- 8:43years, man. It was we were doing some crazy
- 8:47things that were amazing. 93 I won 10 races. 94 we switched
- 8:52from Pontiac to Ford. I won eight races and the career
- 8:55just kept going. And every time I would win,
- 8:58Earnhardt was second and every time Earnhardt would win, I was
- 9:01second. It was just like that back and
- 9:03forth, you know? It just wouldn't stop.
- 9:04It was amazing. It was really good.
- 9:07Do do you think that that was the rivalry that NASCAR needed?
- 9:12Because right now I understand that you don't race anymore.
- 9:15And I understand that you're in the Hall of Fame and you're
- 9:17retired and you got all your in, in a fun way, all your, all your
- 9:22competitors now are your friends.
- 9:24But back then it was looked at as a rivalry.
- 9:28We don't, I don't know if we have any rivalries anymore like
- 9:31you guys had did. Did you know at that time that
- 9:35you were a great race car driver?
- 9:37Number one knew your chassis. That was #1.
- 9:40But you also had to know that you were you and Earnhardt were
- 9:43a show. Well, that's a good question.
- 9:47We've done some really crazy things when it comes to the
- 9:51show. I can only remember like 2 times
- 9:54that we actually did a show deal on the racetrack.
- 9:57But look, you know, I whether I was winning Bristol, I when it
- 10:01was all of a sudden now my career was dumb.
- 10:03I had nine wins of Bristol you know, and Earnhardt was always
- 10:06rattling me all the time, man, help me with that setup, help me
- 10:08with those setups. And you know what?
- 10:10I you're not going to believe this.
- 10:11I was on a boat one time in the Bahamas, he said.
- 10:15Look, man and I, that particular year I was not hunt for the
- 10:19championship and he was, come on man, help with that setup, help
- 10:22with that setup. Do you know I gave him the exact
- 10:25setup, the real setup, right to the team?
- 10:28And you know. Why I wasn't concerned.
- 10:30Why You're not going to believe this one.
- 10:33The reason I knew I was not concerned is I knew that he
- 10:36could not sell it to his team. Oh, wow.
- 10:40I knew the team would look at this and say, Rusty's
- 10:43bullshitting you. Yeah.
- 10:44And you know what? I didn't lie.
- 10:46Yeah, I gave him that entire setup.
- 10:48And I looked at him. I said, what you got in the car
- 10:51before the race started. He said this, this, this, this.
- 10:53And when it was all said and done, you know what he did?
- 10:55He used 70% of that setup I gave him.
- 10:58And you know what happened? I waxed his ass.
- 11:00Yeah, I beat his ass that night so bad.
- 11:03You know why? He didn't do.
- 11:05What? I told him, yeah, he didn't do
- 11:07the whole thing. You always said that to me.
- 11:09Back in the ASA days. You had mentors, you had Larry
- 11:12Phillips, you had Dick Triple and you did everything they told
- 11:15you to do. And then when you went to pay it
- 11:17forward. No.
- 11:20Do you find that like either when you're first starting out,
- 11:24they don't believe you and then when you get to the big time,
- 11:28then he Earnhardt like you said, he goes to Richard Childers.
- 11:32Hey, put this in because Rusty told me.
- 11:34Do you think they thought you were lying or they just their
- 11:38pride got in the way? Do you think people's pride gets
- 11:40in the way? No.
- 11:41I don't think the Pride got in the way of the driver.
- 11:43I think the Pride got in the way of the.
- 11:45Team Yeah, that's what I mean, because.
- 11:46The driver didn't. It was in trouble.
- 11:48He couldn't get the car to handle away once, so he went
- 11:50outside to get some help, right. I went outside to get some help
- 11:53from Mark Martin. All the time I went outside to
- 11:56get some help from Jeff Burton. Jeff Burton went outside to get
- 11:59some help from me. Mark Martin got some help from
- 12:01me. We told each other exactly the
- 12:04truth to the truth. And what was amazing that I
- 12:09always knew what goes around comes around.
- 12:12You can't run this thing by yourself, man.
- 12:14It takes a team or it takes friends to do this stuff and
- 12:17there might be one day I'm in the ditch and and I need some
- 12:19help. There's a lot of times they're
- 12:21in a ditch and they need some help and we did that.
- 12:24And I tell you what, I got a bunch of crap with our two car
- 12:27team. A-Team Penske.
- 12:28I mean those guys, the other guys, the other team, I mean,
- 12:31they were really locked down, super secret, everything, you
- 12:34know? And I didn't believe in that,
- 12:35man. I didn't believe in that.
- 12:37And I share, I'm sorry, I've shared a lot.
- 12:39But you know what? It worked out for me.
- 12:41Yeah. And it worked out for me really
- 12:43good. And that's the way I I live my
- 12:44life. And I'm an honest guy.
- 12:46I tell those guys everything. And I could, I could sit there
- 12:48and say tell them the truth. But I know in my heart that.
- 12:52They're not going to listen. They're.
- 12:53Only going to lose 70 percent, 80%, 'cause I think I'm
- 12:56bullshit. I'm not.
- 12:56I'm not. You know, so we won't keep this
- 13:00one long because people like short stories.
- 13:05We've been talking about 20 minutes.
- 13:06Yeah, well believe me, when you all get to about the four minute
- 13:10mark, you start going like this. But this is so good, I know
- 13:13you'll listen to the whole thing.
- 13:15So that 1989 All Star race, you win it, you win, you won a
- 13:18$250,000. Do you think it night in 1989
- 13:24was that that, was that the most money you ever won or?
- 13:27Oh my gosh. Yeah, back then that was huge
- 13:30money. That was gigantic.
- 13:31I mean, we had me and Barry Dodson, Harold Elliott, Jimmy
- 13:35Makar. We had Todd Parrott, We had the
- 13:38All Star car owner. Yeah, Raymond Beatle, you won
- 13:41the. Championship this year, yeah.
- 13:43Big World time Drag Race. We won the championship in 1980.
- 13:46So you win, you win the, you win the All Star race in 89, you win
- 13:50the championship in 89. Was that your best year ever?
- 13:55Eagle wise? You go like championship.
- 13:58Well, one of the championships, your best year ever.
- 14:00Yeah, my best year ever was driving for Team Penske when I
- 14:04won 10 races and I won a third of all NASCAR races, a third of
- 14:10all the NASCAR races. Yeah, and and we got more
- 14:12stories and it. Broke my wrist in 1993.
- 14:15I got a pin in it right now, still to this day.
- 14:18Talladega, you got a pin still. Yeah, it's a foot long.
- 14:21It starts right here and goes right here.
- 14:22How? Do you go through?
- 14:24It's actually at the airport. They all cost calcified over and
- 14:27it and it doesn't set the the detectors off, you know.
- 14:30So anyway, yeah, no, I I did 9310 races, man.
- 14:34You kidding me? I mean championship was
- 14:36fantastic. They got us six wins that year
- 14:38in 1989. But to win 10 races with Buddy,
- 14:42with Buddy Parrot at the helm and Team Penske?
- 14:46Just rock'n'roll with that black and yellow Miller, January F
- 14:50Carr. My favorite.
- 14:51Car What was your favorite design?
- 14:53What What was your favorite design?
- 14:54So we're going to do more of these.
- 14:56We're done with this story. The All Star race, of course.
- 14:59Rusty's Best Year 89. As far as winning it all, we're
- 15:03going to do more stories. The next one up is when you ran
- 15:08how Fast in a tire test at Talladega.
- 15:11We're not going to talk about it.
- 15:12That's the next show We're going to tease you, AT&T Alltel had
- 15:18you do the tire test. Nextel.
- 15:20OK, that's next. How many mile an hour?
- 15:24242. That's next. 242 mile an hour at
- 15:29Talladega. Until then, remember we are in
- 15:31podcast form. You're going to listen to Rusty
- 15:34on the way to work and you're going to listen to him on the
- 15:37way home until the next show.
