Speaker 1: Preface to h St. John, Lord Bullingbrook the Design. Having
• 0:10
Speaker 1: proposed to write some pieces of human life and manners,
• 0:15
Speaker 1: such as to use my Lord Bacon's expression come home
• 0:19
Speaker 1: to Men's business and Bosoms, I thought it more satisfactory
• 0:25
Speaker 1: to begin with considering man in the abstract, his nature
• 0:29
Speaker 1: and his state. Since to prove any moral duty, to
• 0:34
Speaker 1: enforce any moral precept, or to examine the perfection or
• 0:39
Speaker 1: imperfection of any creature whatsoever, it is necessary first to
• 0:45
Speaker 1: know what condition and relation it is placed in, and
• 0:49
Speaker 1: what is the proper end and purpose of its being.
• 0:54
Speaker 1: The science of human nature is, like all other sciences,
• 0:59
Speaker 1: reduce us to a few clear points. There are not
• 1:03
Speaker 1: many certain truths in this world. It is therefore in
• 1:08
Speaker 1: the anatomy of the mind, as in that of the body,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: more good will accrue to mankind by attending to the large,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: open and perceptible parts, than by studying too much such
• 1:22
Speaker 1: finer nerves and vessels, the conformations and uses of which
• 1:27
Speaker 1: will forever escape our observation. The disputes are all upon
• 1:33
Speaker 1: these last, and I will venture to say they have
• 1:37
Speaker 1: less sharpened the wits than the hearts of men against
• 1:41
Speaker 1: each other, and have diminished the practice more than advance
• 1:46
Speaker 1: to the theory of morality. If I could flatter myself
• 1:50
Speaker 1: that this essay has any merit, it is in steering
• 1:54
Speaker 1: between the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing away
• 2:00
Speaker 1: terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate, yet not inconsistent,
• 2:07
Speaker 1: and a short, yet not imperfect system of ethics. This
• 2:13
Speaker 1: I might have done in prose, But I chose verse
• 2:17
Speaker 1: and even rhyme for two reasons. The one will appear
• 2:21
Speaker 1: obvious that principles, maxims, or precepts so written both strike
• 2:28
Speaker 1: the reader more strongly at first and are more easily
• 2:32
Speaker 1: retained by him afterwards. The other may seem odd, but
• 2:37
Speaker 1: it is true I found I could express them more
• 2:41
Speaker 1: shortly this way than in prose itself. And nothing is
• 2:45
Speaker 1: more certain than that much of the force, as well
• 2:49
Speaker 1: as the grace, of arguments or instructions, depends on their conciseness.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: I was unable to treat this part of my subject
• 2:59
Speaker 1: more in detail without becoming dry and tedious, or more poetically,
• 3:06
Speaker 1: without sacrificing perspicuity to ornament, without wandering from the precision
• 3:13
Speaker 1: or breaking the chain of reasoning. If any man can
• 3:17
Speaker 1: unite all these without diminution of any of them, I
• 3:22
Speaker 1: freely confess he will compass a thing above my capacity.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: What is now published is only to be considered as
• 3:31
Speaker 1: a general map of man, marking out no more than
• 3:35
Speaker 1: the greater parts their extent, their limits, and their connection,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: and leaving the particular to be more fully delineated in
• 3:45
Speaker 1: the charts which are to follow. Consequently, these epistles in
• 3:50
Speaker 1: their progress, if I have health and leisure to make
• 3:54
Speaker 1: any progress, will be less dry and more susceptible of
• 3:59
Speaker 1: poets ornament. I am here only opening the fountains and
• 4:05
Speaker 1: clearing the passage. To deduce the rivers to follow them
• 4:10
Speaker 1: in their course, and to observe their effects, may be
• 4:14
Speaker 1: a task more agreeable. P end of preface Epistle one,
• 4:25
Speaker 1: of the Nature and state of Man with respect to
• 4:29
Speaker 1: the universe. Awake my sin, John, leave all meaner things
• 4:38
Speaker 1: to low ambition and the pride of kings. Let us,
• 4:43
Speaker 1: since life can little more supply than just to look
• 4:47
Speaker 1: about us and to die, expatiate free o'er all this
• 4:53
Speaker 1: scene of man a mighty maze, but not without a plan,
• 5:00
Speaker 1: A wild where weeds and flowers, promiscuous shoot or garden
• 5:06
Speaker 1: tempting with forbidden fruit. Together, let us beat this ample field.
• 5:13
Speaker 1: Try what the open, what the covert yield? The latent tracks,
• 5:19
Speaker 1: the giddy heights. Explore of all who blindly creep or sightless,
• 5:26
Speaker 1: soar eye nature's walks, shoot folly as it flies, and
• 5:32
Speaker 1: catch the manners living as they rise. Laugh Where we
• 5:37
Speaker 1: must be candid? Where we can but vindicate the ways
• 5:42
Speaker 1: of God to man? Say first, of God above or
• 5:49
Speaker 1: man below? What can we reason? But from what we know?
• 5:55
Speaker 1: Of man? What see we but his station here? From
• 5:59
Speaker 1: which to reason, or to which refer? Through worlds unnumbered?
• 6:05
Speaker 1: Though the God be known, des ours to trace him
• 6:08
Speaker 1: only in our own He who through vast immensity can pierce.
• 6:14
Speaker 1: See worlds on worlds, compose one universe. Observe how system
• 6:21
Speaker 1: into system runs, What other planets circle, other suns? What
• 6:27
Speaker 1: varied being people's every star may tell why Heaven has
• 6:33
Speaker 1: made us as we are. But of this frame, the
• 6:37
Speaker 1: bearings and the ties, the strong connections, nice dependencies, gradations.
• 6:45
Speaker 1: Just has thy pervading soul looked through? Or can a
• 6:51
Speaker 1: part contain the whole? Is the great chain that draws
• 6:56
Speaker 1: all to agree, and drawn supports upheld by God or
• 7:02
Speaker 1: thee presumptuous man. The reason wouldst thou find why form'd
• 7:10
Speaker 1: so weak, so little, and so blind? First, if thou
• 7:15
Speaker 1: canst the harder reason, guess why form'd no weaker, blinder,
• 7:21
Speaker 1: and no less ask of thy mother Earth? Why oaks
• 7:26
Speaker 1: are made taller or stronger than the weeds they shade?
• 7:31
Speaker 1: Or ask of yonder argent fields above? Why jove satellites
• 7:37
Speaker 1: are less than Jove of systems? Possible? If tis confessed
• 7:44
Speaker 1: that wisdom infinite must form the best where almost full
• 7:49
Speaker 1: or not coherent be, and all that rises rise in
• 7:54
Speaker 1: due degree, then in the scale of reasoning life tis play.
• 8:00
Speaker 1: There must be somewhere such a rank as man, And
• 8:05
Speaker 1: all the question wrangle e'er so long is only this,
• 8:10
Speaker 1: if God has placed him wrong respecting man, whatever wrong
• 8:16
Speaker 1: we call may must be right as relative to all.
• 8:22
Speaker 1: In human works, Though labor'd on with pain a thousand movements,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: scarce one purpose gain in God's one single can its
• 8:34
Speaker 1: end produce yet serves to second to some other use.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: So man, who here seems principle alone, perhaps act second
• 8:46
Speaker 1: to some sphere unknown, touches some weel, or verges to
• 8:52
Speaker 1: some goal. Tis but a part we see, and not
• 8:56
Speaker 1: a whole. When the proud steed shall know why man
• 9:01
Speaker 1: restrains his fiery course or drives him or the plains,
• 9:07
Speaker 1: when the dull ox, why now he breaks the clod
• 9:11
Speaker 1: is now a victim and now Egypt's god. Then shall
• 9:17
Speaker 1: man's pride and dulness comprehend his actions, passions, being's use
• 9:24
Speaker 1: and end? Why doing suffering check'd impelled? And why this
• 9:32
Speaker 1: hour a slave, the next a deity. Then say not
• 9:37
Speaker 1: man's imperfect heaven in fault. Say rather Man's as perfect
• 9:44
Speaker 1: as he ought, his knowledge, measured to his state, and place,
• 9:49
Speaker 1: his time a moment, and appoint his space. If to
• 9:55
Speaker 1: be perfect in a certain sphere, what matter soon or
• 10:00
Speaker 1: all late, or here or there? The blest to day
• 10:04
Speaker 1: is as completely so as who began a thousand years ago.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: Heaven from all creatures hides the book of fate, all
• 10:16
Speaker 1: that the page prescrib'd their present state from brutes, what men?
• 10:23
Speaker 1: From men? What spirits know? Or who could suffer? Being
• 10:28
Speaker 1: here below the lamb thy riot dooms to bleed to day?
• 10:34
Speaker 1: Had he thy reason, would he skip and play pleas'd
• 10:39
Speaker 1: to the last. He crops the flowery food and licks
• 10:43
Speaker 1: the hand just rais'd to shed his blood, Oh blindness
• 10:49
Speaker 1: to the future, kindly given that each may fill the
• 10:54
Speaker 1: circle mark'd by Heaven, who sees with equal eye as
• 11:00
Speaker 1: God of all. A hero perish or a sparrow fall
• 11:05
Speaker 1: atoms or systems into ruin hurled, and now a bubble burst,
• 11:11
Speaker 1: and now a world hope humbly, then with trembling pinions
• 11:19
Speaker 1: sore wait the great teacher death, and God adore what
• 11:26
Speaker 1: future bliss He gives not thee to know, but gives
• 11:30
Speaker 1: that hope to be thy blessing. Now hope springs eternal
• 11:36
Speaker 1: in the human breast man never is, but always to
• 11:42
Speaker 1: be blest. The soul, uneasy and confined from home, rests
• 11:49
Speaker 1: and expatiates in a life to come. Loathe. The poor
• 11:55
Speaker 1: Indian whose untutored mind sees God in clow or hears
• 12:01
Speaker 1: him in the wind. His soul proud science, never taught
• 12:05
Speaker 1: to stray far as the solar walk or milky way.
• 12:10
Speaker 1: Yet simple nature to his hope has given behind the
• 12:15
Speaker 1: cloud topp'd hill and humbler Heaven, some safer world in
• 12:21
Speaker 1: depths of woods, embraced, some happier island in the watery waste,
• 12:28
Speaker 1: where slaves once more their native land. Behold, no fiends torment,
• 12:34
Speaker 1: no Christians thirst for gold. To be contents his natural desire,
• 12:42
Speaker 1: he asks, no angel's wing, no seraph's fire, but thinks,
• 12:48
Speaker 1: admitted to that equal sky, his faithful dog shall bear
• 12:53
Speaker 1: him company. Go wiser thou, and in thy scale of sense,
• 13:01
Speaker 1: weigh thy opinion against providence, call imperfection. What thou fanciest
• 13:07
Speaker 1: such say here he gives too little, there too much?
• 13:13
Speaker 1: Destroy all creatures for thy sport or gust. Yet cry,
• 13:19
Speaker 1: if man's unhappy, God's unjust? If man alone engross not
• 13:26
Speaker 1: Heaven's high care alone made perfect here immortal, there snatch
• 13:33
Speaker 1: from his hand the balance and the rod rejudge his justice.
• 13:39
Speaker 1: Be the God of God, in pride, in reasoning, pride,
• 13:45
Speaker 1: our error lies, All quit their sphere and rush into
• 13:50
Speaker 1: the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blessed abodes.
• 13:56
Speaker 1: Men would be angels, Angels would be god, odds aspiring
• 14:02
Speaker 1: to be gods. If angels fell, aspiring to be angels,
• 14:06
Speaker 1: men rebel, and who but wishes to invert the laws
• 14:12
Speaker 1: of order, sins against the eternal cause? Ask for what
• 14:19
Speaker 1: end the heavenly bodies shine earth? For whose use? Pride
• 14:25
Speaker 1: answers tis for mine. For me, kind nature wakes her
• 14:30
Speaker 1: genial power, suckles each herb, and spreads out every flower
• 14:36
Speaker 1: annual for me, the grape, the rose renew, the juice nectarius,
• 14:42
Speaker 1: and the balmy dew. For me the mine A thousand
• 14:46
Speaker 1: treasures brings for me. Health gushes from a thousand springs,
• 14:53
Speaker 1: sees roll to waft me, suns to light me, rise
• 14:59
Speaker 1: my foot stool, earth, my canopy, the skies. But errs
• 15:06
Speaker 1: not Nature from this gracious end, from burning suns, when
• 15:12
Speaker 1: livid deaths descend, when earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep
• 15:19
Speaker 1: towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep. No, Tis, replied,
• 15:26
Speaker 1: The first Almighty cause acts not by partial but by
• 15:31
Speaker 1: general laws. The exceptions few. Some change since all began,
• 15:38
Speaker 1: and what created perfect? Why then, man, if the great
• 15:44
Speaker 1: end be human happiness, then nature deviates, and can man
• 15:50
Speaker 1: do less as much that end? A constant course requires
• 15:56
Speaker 1: of showers and sunshine, as of man's desire, as much
• 16:01
Speaker 1: eternal springs and cloudless skies as men for ever temperate,
• 16:07
Speaker 1: calm and wise. If plagues or earthquakes break not Heaven's design,
• 16:14
Speaker 1: why then a borger or a catiline, who knows but
• 16:20
Speaker 1: he whose hand the lightning forms, who heaves old ocean,
• 16:25
Speaker 1: and who wings the storms, pours fierce ambition in a
• 16:30
Speaker 1: Caesar's mind, or turns young ammon loose to scourge mankind
• 16:37
Speaker 1: from pride, from pride our very reasoning springs account for
• 16:43
Speaker 1: moral as for natural things. Why charge we heaven in
• 16:49
Speaker 1: those in these acquit in both To reason right is
• 16:55
Speaker 1: to submit better for us? Perhaps it might peer where
• 17:01
Speaker 1: they're all harmony, all virtue here that never air or
• 17:06
Speaker 1: ocean felt, the wind that never passion discomposed the mind.
• 17:12
Speaker 1: But all subsists by elemental strife and passions are the
• 17:19
Speaker 1: elements of life. The general order, since the hole began,
• 17:25
Speaker 1: is kept in nature and is kept in man. What
• 17:31
Speaker 1: would this man now upward? He will soar, and little
• 17:37
Speaker 1: less than angel would be more now looking downwards, Just
• 17:43
Speaker 1: as grieved appears to want the strength of bulls, the
• 17:47
Speaker 1: fur of bears made for his use, all creatures, if
• 17:53
Speaker 1: he call say what their use? Had he the powers
• 17:57
Speaker 1: of all nature to the ease without profusion kind, the
• 18:03
Speaker 1: proper organs, proper powers assign'd each seeming want compensated of course,
• 18:11
Speaker 1: here with degrees of swiftness, bear a force all in
• 18:16
Speaker 1: exact proportion to the state, nothing to add and nothing
• 18:21
Speaker 1: to abate. Each beast, each insect happy in its own
• 18:27
Speaker 1: is heaven unkind to man and man alone. Shall he alone,
• 18:33
Speaker 1: whom rational we call, be pleased with nothing? If not
• 18:38
Speaker 1: blest with all the bliss of man? Could pride that
• 18:44
Speaker 1: blessing find is not to act or think beyond mankind,
• 18:51
Speaker 1: no powers of body or of soul to share. But
• 18:55
Speaker 1: what is nature and his state can bear? Why has
• 18:59
Speaker 1: not man a microscopic eye? For this plain reason? Man
• 19:04
Speaker 1: is not a fly? Say what the use where finer
• 19:09
Speaker 1: optics given to inspector might not comprehend the heaven or touch?
• 19:16
Speaker 1: If tremblingly alive, all awe to smart and agonize at
• 19:22
Speaker 1: every pore, or quick effluvia darting through the brain, die
• 19:27
Speaker 1: of a rose in aromatic pain. If Nature sundered in
• 19:34
Speaker 1: his opening ears and stunned him with the music of
• 19:38
Speaker 1: the spheres, how would he wish that Heaven had left
• 19:42
Speaker 1: him still? The whispering zephyr and the purling rill, who
• 19:48
Speaker 1: finds not providence all good and wise alike in what
• 19:53
Speaker 1: it gives and what denies, far as creations, ample range extends,
• 20:02
Speaker 1: the scale of sensual mental powers ascends, mark how it
• 20:08
Speaker 1: mounts to man's imperial race. From the green myriads in
• 20:14
Speaker 1: the peopled grass, What modes of sight betwixt each wide extreme,
• 20:20
Speaker 1: the mole's dim curtain and the lynx's beam of smell?
• 20:26
Speaker 1: The headlong lioness between and hound sagacious on the tainted
• 20:32
Speaker 1: green of hearing, from the life that fills the flood
• 20:38
Speaker 1: to that which warbles through the vernal wood the spiders touch.
• 20:43
Speaker 1: How exquisitely fine feels that each thread and lives along
• 20:49
Speaker 1: the line in the nice bee. What scents so subtly
• 20:54
Speaker 1: true from poisonous herbs extracts the healing dew. How instinct
• 21:02
Speaker 1: varies in the groveling swine, compared half reasoning elephant with thine?
• 21:09
Speaker 1: TwixT that and reason. What a nice barrier for ever separate,
• 21:15
Speaker 1: yet forever near remembrance and reflection, How allayed, What thin
• 21:23
Speaker 1: partitions sense from thought, divide and middle natures? How they
• 21:29
Speaker 1: long to join, yet never passed the insuperable line. Without
• 21:35
Speaker 1: this just gradation, could they be subjected? These to those
• 21:41
Speaker 1: or all to thee? The powers of all subdued by
• 21:46
Speaker 1: thee alone is not thy reason. All these powers in
• 21:52
Speaker 1: one see through this air, this ocean, and this earth,
• 21:59
Speaker 1: all matter quick and bursting into birth above how high
• 22:05
Speaker 1: progressive life may go around, how wide, how deep extend
• 22:12
Speaker 1: below vast chain of being which from God began, Nature's ethereal, human, angel, man, beast, bird, fish, insect.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: What no eye can see, no glass can reach from
• 22:33
Speaker 1: infinite to thee, from thee to nothing on superior powers,
• 22:40
Speaker 1: where we to press inferior might on ours, or in
• 22:45
Speaker 1: the full creation, leave a void where one step broken,
• 22:51
Speaker 1: the great scales destroyed from Nature's chain. Whatever link you
• 22:57
Speaker 1: strike tens or tense breaks the chain alike. And if
• 23:04
Speaker 1: each system ingradation roll alike essential to the amazing whole,
• 23:11
Speaker 1: the least confusion, but in one not all that system only,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: but the whole must fall. Let Earth unbalanced from her orbit, fly,
• 23:24
Speaker 1: planets and suns run lawless through the sky. Let ruling
• 23:29
Speaker 1: angels from their spheres, behurled being on being wrecked, and
• 23:35
Speaker 1: world on world, Heaven's whole foundations to their center, not
• 23:41
Speaker 1: and nature tremble to the throne of God. All this
• 23:47
Speaker 1: dread order break for whom, for thee vile worm, Oh madness, pride, impiety.
• 23:59
Speaker 1: What if the foot ordain'd the dust to tread or
• 24:04
Speaker 1: hand to toil, aspired to be the head. What if
• 24:09
Speaker 1: the head, the eye, or ear, repined to serve mere
• 24:14
Speaker 1: engines to the ruling mind. Just as absurd for any
• 24:19
Speaker 1: part to claim to be another in this general frame,
• 24:24
Speaker 1: just as absurd to mourn the tasks or pains the
• 24:29
Speaker 1: great directing mind of all ordains. All are but parts
• 24:35
Speaker 1: of one stupendous hole, whose body nature is and God
• 24:41
Speaker 1: the soul that chang'd through all, and yet in all
• 24:47
Speaker 1: the same great in the earth as in the ethereal frame,
• 24:52
Speaker 1: warms in the sun, refreshes in the breeze, glows in
• 24:58
Speaker 1: the stars, and blossom in the trees, lives through all, Life,
• 25:04
Speaker 1: extends through all extent, spreads, undivided, operates, unspent, breathes in
• 25:13
Speaker 1: our soul, informs our mortal part, as full as perfect
• 25:20
Speaker 1: in a hair, as heart, as full as perfect in
• 25:25
Speaker 1: vile man that mourns, as the wrapt seraph that adores
• 25:31
Speaker 1: and burns to him, no high, no low, no great,
• 25:37
Speaker 1: no small, He fills, he bounds, connects and equals. All cease, then,
• 25:48
Speaker 1: nor order, imperfection, name our proper bliss depends on what
• 25:55
Speaker 1: we blame. Know thy own point, this mid this due
• 26:01
Speaker 1: degree of blindness, weakness Heaven bestows on thee. Submit in
• 26:09
Speaker 1: this or any other sphere, secure to be as blest
• 26:13
Speaker 1: as thou canst bear, safe in the hand of one
• 26:18
Speaker 1: disposing power, or in the natal or the mortal hour.
• 26:24
Speaker 1: All nature is but art unknown to thee, all chance,
• 26:30
Speaker 1: direction which thou canst not see, all discord, harmony not understood,
• 26:39
Speaker 1: all partial evil, universal good, and spite of pride in
• 26:46
Speaker 1: erring reason's spite. One truth is clear, whatever is is
• 26:53
Speaker 1: right end of Epistle one. Epistle too of the nature
• 27:03
Speaker 1: and state of man, with respect to himself as an individual,
• 27:11
Speaker 1: Know then thyself, presume not God to scan the proper
• 27:17
Speaker 1: study of mankind is man placed on this isthmus of
• 27:23
Speaker 1: a middle state, a being darkly wise and rudely great,
• 27:29
Speaker 1: with too much knowledge for the skeptic side, with too
• 27:33
Speaker 1: much weakness for the stoic's pride. He hangs between in
• 27:39
Speaker 1: doubt to act or rest, in doubt, to deem himself
• 27:44
Speaker 1: a god or beast, in doubt his mind or body,
• 27:50
Speaker 1: to prefer born but to die, and reasoning but to
• 27:56
Speaker 1: err alike in ignorance, his reason such whether he thinks
• 28:02
Speaker 1: too little or too much. Chaos of thought and passion,
• 28:07
Speaker 1: all confused still by himself, abused or disabused, created half
• 28:15
Speaker 1: to rise and half to fall. Great Lord of all things,
• 28:22
Speaker 1: yet to pray to all, sole judge of truth in
• 28:27
Speaker 1: endless error, hurled the glory, jest and riddle of the world.
• 28:35
Speaker 1: Go wondrous creature mount where science guides. Go, measure earth,
• 28:42
Speaker 1: weigh e'er and state the tides. Instruct the planets in
• 28:47
Speaker 1: what orbs to run, correct old time, and regulate the sun.
• 28:53
Speaker 1: Go soar with Plato to the emperial sphere, to the
• 28:58
Speaker 1: first good for us, perfect and first fair. Or tread
• 29:04
Speaker 1: the mazy round his followers trod and quitting sense, call
• 29:09
Speaker 1: imitating God, as Eastern priests in giddy circles run and
• 29:16
Speaker 1: turn their heads to imitate the Sun. Go teach eternal
• 29:22
Speaker 1: wisdom how to rule, Then drop into thyself and be
• 29:27
Speaker 1: a fool superior beings. When of late they saw a
• 29:33
Speaker 1: mortal man unfold all Nature's law, admired such wisdom in
• 29:39
Speaker 1: an earthly shape, and showed a newton, as we show
• 29:44
Speaker 1: an ape. Could he whose rules the rapid comet bind,
• 29:50
Speaker 1: describe or fix one movement of his mind, who saw
• 29:55
Speaker 1: its fires here rise and there descend, Explain his his
• 30:00
Speaker 1: own beginning or his end alas what wonder man's superior
• 30:07
Speaker 1: part uncheck'd may rise and climb from art to art.
• 30:13
Speaker 1: But when his own great work is but begun, what
• 30:17
Speaker 1: reason weaves by passion is undone trace science, Then with
• 30:25
Speaker 1: modesty thy guide. First strip off all her equipage of pride.
• 30:31
Speaker 1: Deduct what is but vanity or dress, or learning's luxury
• 30:37
Speaker 1: or idleness, or tricks to show the stretch of human brain,
• 30:43
Speaker 1: mere curious pleasure or ingenious pain. Expunge the whole, or
• 30:50
Speaker 1: lop the excrescent parts of all our vices have created arts.
• 30:56
Speaker 1: Then see how little the remaining sum which serv'd the
• 31:01
Speaker 1: past and must the times to come. Two principles in
• 31:07
Speaker 1: human nature reign self love to urge, and reason to restrain.
• 31:15
Speaker 1: Nor this a good, nor that a bad. We call
• 31:19
Speaker 1: each works its end to move or govern all, and
• 31:24
Speaker 1: to their proper operations, still ascribe all good to their
• 31:30
Speaker 1: improper ill self. Love, the spring of motion, acts the soul,
• 31:38
Speaker 1: reasons comparing balance rules the whole man. But for that
• 31:44
Speaker 1: no action could attend. And but for this, we're active
• 31:49
Speaker 1: to no end, fixed like a plant on his peculiar spot,
• 31:54
Speaker 1: to draw nutrition, propagate and rot or meteor like flame,
• 32:01
Speaker 1: lawless through the void, destroying others by himself destroyed. Most strength,
• 32:09
Speaker 1: the moving principle requires active its task. It prompts, impels, inspires, sedate,
• 32:18
Speaker 1: and quiet the comparing lies formed, but to check, deliberate,
• 32:24
Speaker 1: and advise. Self love still stronger as its objects nigh.
• 32:32
Speaker 1: Reasons at distance and in prospect, lie that sees immediate
• 32:38
Speaker 1: good by present, sense, reason, the future, and the consequence
• 32:45
Speaker 1: thicker than arguments, temptations strong at best, more watchful this,
• 32:52
Speaker 1: but that more strong the action of the stronger to suspend, reasons,
• 32:59
Speaker 1: still use, to reason, still attend, attention, habit, and experience gains.
• 33:08
Speaker 1: Each strengthens reason, and self love restrains. Let subtle schoolmen
• 33:16
Speaker 1: teach these friends to fight more studious, to divide than
• 33:20
Speaker 1: to unite, and grace and virtue. Sense and reason split
• 33:27
Speaker 1: with all the rash dexterity of wit wits, Just like
• 33:33
Speaker 1: fools that war about a name have full as oft
• 33:37
Speaker 1: no meaning or the same self love and reason to
• 33:42
Speaker 1: one end, aspire pain, their aversion, pleasure, their desire, but
• 33:49
Speaker 1: greedy that its object would devour this taste the honey,
• 33:55
Speaker 1: and not wound the flower. Pleasure or long or rightly
• 34:01
Speaker 1: understood our greatest evil or our greatest good, modes of
• 34:10
Speaker 1: self love. The passions we may call tis real good
• 34:15
Speaker 1: or seeming, moves them all. But since not every good
• 34:20
Speaker 1: we can divide, and reason bids us for our own,
• 34:25
Speaker 1: Provide passions, though selfish, if their means be fair, list
• 34:31
Speaker 1: under reason, and deserve her care. Those that imparted caught
• 34:37
Speaker 1: a nobler aim, exalt their kind, and take some virtue's name.
• 34:45
Speaker 1: In lazy apathy, let stoics boast their virtue. Fix'd tis
• 34:52
Speaker 1: fix'd as in a frost contract it all retiring to
• 34:56
Speaker 1: the breast. But strength of mind is exercise, not rest.
• 35:02
Speaker 1: The rising tempest puts in act the soul parts. It
• 35:07
Speaker 1: may ravage, but preserves the whole. On life's vast ocean,
• 35:14
Speaker 1: diversely we sail reason the card, but passion is the gale.
• 35:20
Speaker 1: Nor God alone In the still calm, we find he
• 35:25
Speaker 1: mounts the storm and walks upon the wind. Passions like elements,
• 35:32
Speaker 1: though born to fight, yet mix'd and soften'd in his work,
• 35:38
Speaker 1: unite these tis enough to temper and employ. But what
• 35:45
Speaker 1: composes man can bound destroy, suffice that reason, keep to
• 35:51
Speaker 1: Nature's road, subject compound them, follow her and God, love,
• 35:59
Speaker 1: hope and joy, fair pleasures, smiling, train, hate, fear, and grief,
• 36:07
Speaker 1: the family of pain. These mixed with art and to due, bounce, confined,
• 36:14
Speaker 1: make and maintain the balance of the mind. The lights
• 36:19
Speaker 1: and shades, whose well accorded strife gives all the strength
• 36:24
Speaker 1: and color of our life. Pleasures are ever in our
• 36:28
Speaker 1: hands or eyes, and when in act they cease in prospect,
• 36:34
Speaker 1: rise present to grasp, and future still to find the
• 36:40
Speaker 1: whole employ of body and of mind. All spread their charms,
• 36:47
Speaker 1: but charm not all alike. On different senses, different objects strike,
• 36:54
Speaker 1: hence different passions, more or less in flame, as strong
• 37:00
Speaker 1: or weak the organs of the frame, and hence one
• 37:04
Speaker 1: master passion in the breast, like aer and serpent, swallows
• 37:10
Speaker 1: up the rest. As man, perhaps the moment of his breath,
• 37:16
Speaker 1: receives the lurking principle of death. The young disease that
• 37:21
Speaker 1: must subdue at length grows with his growth and strengthens
• 37:26
Speaker 1: with his strength. So cast and mingled with his very frame,
• 37:32
Speaker 1: the mind's disease, its ruling passion came each vital humor,
• 37:39
Speaker 1: which should feed the whole. Soon flows to this in
• 37:44
Speaker 1: body and in soul. Whatever warms the heart or fills
• 37:49
Speaker 1: the head, as the mind opens and its functions spread,
• 37:54
Speaker 1: imagination plies her dangerous art and pours it all upon
• 38:00
Speaker 1: the peccant part. Nature, its mother, habit is, its nurse. Wit.
• 38:08
Speaker 1: Spirit faculties but make it worse. Reason itself, but gives
• 38:14
Speaker 1: it edge and power. As Heaven's blessed beam turns vinegar
• 38:19
Speaker 1: more sour. We wretched subjects, though to lawful sway in
• 38:26
Speaker 1: this weak queen, some favorite still obey Ah. If she
• 38:32
Speaker 1: lend not arms as well as rules, What can she
• 38:36
Speaker 1: more than tell us we are fools. Teach us to
• 38:40
Speaker 1: mourn our nature, not to mend a sharp accuser, but
• 38:45
Speaker 1: a helpless friend, or from a judge turn pleader, to
• 38:50
Speaker 1: persuade the choice we make, or justify it. Made proud
• 38:56
Speaker 1: of an easy conquest all along, she but removes weak
• 39:01
Speaker 1: passions for the strong. So when small humors gather to
• 39:07
Speaker 1: a gout, the doctor fancies he has driven them out. Yes,
• 39:14
Speaker 1: Nature's road must ever be preferred. Reason is here no guide,
• 39:20
Speaker 1: but still a guard tis hers to rectify, not overthrow
• 39:26
Speaker 1: and treat this passion more as friend than foe, a
• 39:31
Speaker 1: mightier power. The strong direction sends, and several men impels
• 39:37
Speaker 1: to several ends, like varying winds by other passions tossed.
• 39:44
Speaker 1: This drives them constant to a certain coast. Let power
• 39:49
Speaker 1: or knowledge, gold or glory, please or oft more strong
• 39:55
Speaker 1: than all. The love of ease through life tis followed,
• 40:00
Speaker 1: even at life's expense. The merchant's toil, the sage's indolence,
• 40:06
Speaker 1: the monk's humility, the hero's pride. All all alike find
• 40:13
Speaker 1: reason on their side. The eternal art inducing good from ill,
• 40:21
Speaker 1: grafts on this passion our best principle. It is thus
• 40:26
Speaker 1: the mercury of man is fix'd. Strong grows the virtue
• 40:31
Speaker 1: with his nature mix'd the dross cements, what elsewhere to
• 40:37
Speaker 1: refined and in one interest. Body acts with mind as fruits,
• 40:44
Speaker 1: ungrateful to the planter's care on savage stocks inserted, learn
• 40:50
Speaker 1: to bear the surest virtues. Thus, from passion's shoot, wild
• 40:57
Speaker 1: nature's vigor working at the root, what crops of wit
• 41:03
Speaker 1: and honesty appear from spleen from obstinacy, hate or fear,
• 41:09
Speaker 1: see anger, zeal and fortitude supply, even avarice, prudence, sloth, philosophy,
• 41:19
Speaker 1: lust through some certain strainers well refined, is gentle love
• 41:25
Speaker 1: and charms all womankind. Envy to which the ignoble mind's
• 41:32
Speaker 1: a slave is emulation in the learned or brave, Nor
• 41:38
Speaker 1: virtue male or female. Can we name? But what will
• 41:42
Speaker 1: grow on pride or grow on shame? Thus nature gives
• 41:48
Speaker 1: us Let it check our pride, the virtue nearest to
• 41:53
Speaker 1: our vice, allied reason, the bias turns to good from ill,
• 42:00
Speaker 1: and nero reigns a Titus if he will. The fiery
• 42:06
Speaker 1: soul abhorred in catiline, in deseous charms in courteous is divine.
• 42:13
Speaker 1: The same ambition can destroy or save, and makes a
• 42:19
Speaker 1: patriot as it makes a knave. This light and darkness
• 42:24
Speaker 1: in our chaos join'd what shall divide the God within
• 42:30
Speaker 1: the mind extremes in nature, equal ends produce in man.
• 42:39
Speaker 1: They join to some mysterious use, though each by turns
• 42:45
Speaker 1: the others bound invade, as in some well wrought picture,
• 42:50
Speaker 1: Light and shade and oft so mix. The difference is
• 42:55
Speaker 1: too nice. Where ends the virtue or begins the fools,
• 43:02
Speaker 1: who from hence into the notion fall that vice or virtue,
• 43:07
Speaker 1: there is none at all. If white and black blend,
• 43:12
Speaker 1: soften and unite at thousand ways, is there no black
• 43:16
Speaker 1: or white? Ask your own heart, and nothing is so
• 43:21
Speaker 1: plain tis to mistake them costs the time and pain.
• 43:28
Speaker 1: Vice is a monster of so frightful mien as to
• 43:32
Speaker 1: be hated needs but to be seen, yet seen too
• 43:37
Speaker 1: oft familiar with her face, we first endure, then pity,
• 43:43
Speaker 1: then embrace. But where the extreme of vice was ne'er agreed?
• 43:50
Speaker 1: Ask where's the north? At York? Tis on the tweed?
• 43:55
Speaker 1: In Scotland at the Orcades, and there at Greenland Zembla,
• 44:01
Speaker 1: Or the Lord knows where No creature owns it in
• 44:05
Speaker 1: the first degree, but thinks his neighbor farther gone than he,
• 44:12
Speaker 1: Even those who dwell beneath its very zone, or never
• 44:16
Speaker 1: feel the rage, or never own what happier nations shrink
• 44:22
Speaker 1: at with affright. The hard inhabitant contents is right, virtuous
• 44:30
Speaker 1: and vicious. Every man must be few in the extreme,
• 44:35
Speaker 1: but all in the degree. The rogue and fool by
• 44:39
Speaker 1: fits is fair and wise, and even the best by
• 44:44
Speaker 1: fits what they despise tis but by parts we follow
• 44:50
Speaker 1: good or ill. For vice or virtue self directs it. Still,
• 44:57
Speaker 1: each individual seeks a several goal, but Heaven's great view
• 45:03
Speaker 1: is one, and that the whole that counterworks each folly
• 45:09
Speaker 1: and caprice that disappoints the effect of every vice, that
• 45:15
Speaker 1: happy frailties to all ranks applied, shame to the virgin,
• 45:21
Speaker 1: to the matron, pride, fear to the statesman, rashness to
• 45:26
Speaker 1: the chief, to king's presumption, and to crowd's belief. That
• 45:33
Speaker 1: virtue's ends from vanity can raise which seeks no interest,
• 45:39
Speaker 1: no reward, but praise and build on wants and on
• 45:44
Speaker 1: defects of mind, the joy, the peace, the glory of mankind,
• 45:51
Speaker 1: Heaven forming each on other to depend a master or
• 45:56
Speaker 1: a servant or a friend, bids each on other for assistance.
• 46:01
Speaker 1: Call till one man's weakness grows. The strength of all wants, frailties,
• 46:09
Speaker 1: passions closer still a lie, the common interest or endear
• 46:14
Speaker 1: the tie to these we owe true friendship, love. Sincere
• 46:21
Speaker 1: each homefelt joy, that life inherits here, Yet from the
• 46:26
Speaker 1: same we learn in its decline those joys, those loves,
• 46:32
Speaker 1: those interests, to resign, taught half by reason, half by
• 46:38
Speaker 1: mere decay, to welcome death and calmly pass away. Whate'er
• 46:46
Speaker 1: the passion, knowledge, fame or pelf. Not one will change
• 46:51
Speaker 1: his neighbor with himself. The learned is happy nature to explore.
• 46:58
Speaker 1: The fool is happy that he knows no more. The
• 47:02
Speaker 1: rich is happy, and the plenty given the poor contents
• 47:07
Speaker 1: him with the care of heaven. See the blind beggar dance,
• 47:12
Speaker 1: the cripple sing, the sot a hero, lunatic a king.
• 47:19
Speaker 1: The starving chemist in his golden views supremely blest, the
• 47:24
Speaker 1: poet in his muse. See some strange comfort every state
• 47:30
Speaker 1: attend and pride bestowed on all a common friend. See
• 47:36
Speaker 1: some fit passion, every age supply hope travels through, nor
• 47:43
Speaker 1: quits us when we die. Behold the child, by nature's
• 47:49
Speaker 1: kindly law, pleased with a rattle, tickled with a straw,
• 47:55
Speaker 1: some livelier plaything gives his youth delight a little louder,
• 48:00
Speaker 1: but as empty quite scarfs, garters, gold, amuse, his riper stage,
• 48:08
Speaker 1: and beads and prayer books are the toys of age.
• 48:12
Speaker 1: Pleased with this bauble still as that before till tired
• 48:18
Speaker 1: he sleeps, and life's poor plays o'er meanwhile. Opinion gilds
• 48:26
Speaker 1: with varying rays, those painted clouds that beautify our days.
• 48:32
Speaker 1: Each want of happiness by hope supplied, and each vacuity
• 48:37
Speaker 1: of sense by pride. These build as fast as knowledge
• 48:43
Speaker 1: can destroy. In folly's cup, still laughs the bubble joy.
• 48:50
Speaker 1: One prospect lost, another still we gain, And not a
• 48:55
Speaker 1: vanity is given in vain even mean self love becomes
• 49:02
Speaker 1: by force, divine the scale to measure others wants by thine,
• 49:09
Speaker 1: see and confess one comfort still must rise. Tis this,
• 49:16
Speaker 1: though man's a fool, yet God is wise. End of
• 49:24
Speaker 1: Epistle two, Epistle three of the Nature and State of
• 49:31
Speaker 1: man with respect to society. Here then we rest. The
• 49:39
Speaker 1: universal cause acts to one end, but acts by various laws,
• 49:48
Speaker 1: in all the madness of superfluous health, the trim of pride,
• 49:54
Speaker 1: the impudence of wealth. Let this great truth be present
• 50:00
Speaker 1: night and day, but most be present if we preach
• 50:04
Speaker 1: or pray. Look round our world. Behold the chain of love,
• 50:12
Speaker 1: combining all below and all above. See plastic nature working
• 50:19
Speaker 1: to this end. The single atoms, each to other, tend attract,
• 50:25
Speaker 1: attracted to the next in place, formed and impelled its
• 50:31
Speaker 1: neighbor to embrace. See matter next with various life endued,
• 50:38
Speaker 1: pressed to one center still the general good See dying vegetables,
• 50:46
Speaker 1: life sustain see life dissolving vegetate again. All forms that
• 50:54
Speaker 1: perish other forms supply by turns, we catch the vital
• 51:00
Speaker 1: breath and die, Like bubbles on the sea of matter born,
• 51:06
Speaker 1: they rise, they break, and to that sea return. Nothing
• 51:13
Speaker 1: is foreign. Parts relate to whole, one, all extending, all
• 51:20
Speaker 1: preserving soul connects, each being greatest with the least made
• 51:27
Speaker 1: beast in aid of man, and man of beast, all serv'd,
• 51:33
Speaker 1: all serving. Nothing stands alone. The chain holds on, and
• 51:40
Speaker 1: where it ends unknown. Has God thou fool worked solely
• 51:47
Speaker 1: for thy good, thy joy, thy pastime, thy attire, thy food,
• 51:54
Speaker 1: Who for thy table feeds the wanton fawn for him
• 51:59
Speaker 1: as kind spread the flowery lawn. Is it for thee?
• 52:04
Speaker 1: The lark ascends and sings joy, tunes his voice, joy,
• 52:10
Speaker 1: elevates his wings. Is it for thee? The linnet pours
• 52:15
Speaker 1: his throat, loves of his own, and raptures swell the note.
• 52:21
Speaker 1: The bounding steed you pompously bestride, shares with his lord.
• 52:27
Speaker 1: The pleasure and the pride is thine alone. The seed
• 52:32
Speaker 1: that strews the plain. The birds of heaven shall vindicate
• 52:37
Speaker 1: their grain thine the full harvest of the golden year
• 52:43
Speaker 1: part pays, and justly the deserving steer. The hog that
• 52:49
Speaker 1: plows not nor obeys thy call, lives on the labors
• 52:54
Speaker 1: of this Lord of all no nature's children, All all
• 53:00
Speaker 1: divide her care. The fur that warms a monarch warmed
• 53:05
Speaker 1: a bear. While man exclaims, see all things for my use,
• 53:12
Speaker 1: see man for mine, replies a pampered goose. And just
• 53:18
Speaker 1: as short of reason he must fall. Who thinks all
• 53:22
Speaker 1: made for one, not one for all. Grant that the
• 53:28
Speaker 1: powerful still the weak, control be man, the wit and
• 53:34
Speaker 1: tyrant of the whole nature. That tyrant checks, he only
• 53:40
Speaker 1: knows and helps another creature's wants and woes. Say, will
• 53:47
Speaker 1: the falcon, stooping from above, smit with her varying plumage,
• 53:53
Speaker 1: spare the dove, admires the jay the insect's gilded wings,
• 53:59
Speaker 1: or hears the hawk when Philomela sings. Man cares for
• 54:06
Speaker 1: all to birds. He gives his woods to beasts, his pastures,
• 54:11
Speaker 1: and to fish his floods. For some. His interest prompts
• 54:17
Speaker 1: him to provide for more his pleasure. Yet for more
• 54:22
Speaker 1: his pride. All feed on one vain patron, and enjoy
• 54:28
Speaker 1: the extensive blessing of his luxury, that very life, his
• 54:34
Speaker 1: learned hunger craves. He saves from famine from the savage, saves, nay,
• 54:42
Speaker 1: feasts the animal. He dooms his feast, and till he
• 54:47
Speaker 1: ends the being makes it blest, which sees no more
• 54:52
Speaker 1: the stroke or feels the pain than favor'd man by
• 54:57
Speaker 1: touch ethereal slain. The creature had his feast of life before,
• 55:04
Speaker 1: thou too must perish when thy feast is owe to
• 55:10
Speaker 1: each unthinking being. Heav'n a friend gives not the useless
• 55:16
Speaker 1: knowledge of its end to man imparts it, but with
• 55:21
Speaker 1: such a view as while he dreads it makes him
• 55:25
Speaker 1: hope it too. The hour conceal'd and so remote the
• 55:31
Speaker 1: fear death still draws nearer, never seeming near great standing
• 55:39
Speaker 1: miracle that heav'n assign'd its only thinking thing. This turn
• 55:46
Speaker 1: of mind, whether with reason or with instinct, blest no.
• 55:54
Speaker 1: All enjoy that power which suits them best to bliss
• 55:59
Speaker 1: a like by that direction, tend and find the means
• 56:05
Speaker 1: proportioned to their end. Say where full instinct is the
• 56:11
Speaker 1: unerring guide? What pope or counsel. Can they need beside reason?
• 56:18
Speaker 1: However able cool at best, cares not for service, or
• 56:24
Speaker 1: but serves when pressed, stays till we call, and then
• 56:29
Speaker 1: not often near but honest instinct comes a volunteer, sure,
• 56:36
Speaker 1: never to o'er shoot, but just to hit while still
• 56:40
Speaker 1: too wide or short is human wit sure by quick
• 56:46
Speaker 1: nature happiness to gain, which heavier reason labors that in

Speaker 1: of man. Pride then was not nor arts that pride

Speaker 1: to aid. Man walked with beast, joint tenant of the shade,

Speaker 1: Thus then to man the voice of nature spake. Go

• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: all forms of social union find, and hence let reason

Speaker 1: late instruct mankind. Here subterranean works and cities, see there

Speaker 1: towns aerial on the waving tree. Learn each small people's

Speaker 1: preserve each state, laws wise as nature and as fixed

Speaker 1: as fate. In vain thy reason, finer webs shall draw,

Speaker 1: entangle justice in her net of law, and right too rigid,

• 1:04:57
Speaker 1: And for those arts mere in distinct could afford be

Speaker 1: mankind might strongly draw when love was liberty and nature law.
• 1:05:54
Speaker 1: Thus states were formed, the name of king unknown till

Speaker 1: or fetch the ayerial eagle to the ground, till drooping, sick, dying,

Speaker 1: they began whom they revered as God, to mourn as man. Then,
• 1:07:07
Speaker 1: looking up from sire to sire, explored one great first father,

Speaker 1: and that first adored or plain tradition, that this all
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: begun conveyed unbroken faith, from sire to son. The worker
• 1:07:27
Speaker 1: from the work distinct was known, and simple reason never sought.
• 1:07:33
Speaker 1: But one ere wit obleak had broke that steady light man,
• 1:07:39
Speaker 1: like his maker, saw that all was right to virtue
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: in the paths of pleasure, trod and owned a father
• 1:07:50
Speaker 1: when he owned a God, love all the faith and
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: all the allegiance. Then, for nature knew no right, divayvine

Speaker 1: in men, no ill could fear in God, and understood
• 1:08:06
Speaker 1: a sovereign being, but a sovereign good, true faith, true policy,

Speaker 1: united ran. This was but love of God, and this
• 1:08:18
Speaker 1: of man, who first taught souls enslaved and realms undone.
• 1:08:26
Speaker 1: The enormous faith of many made for one that proud
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: exception to all Nature's laws, to invert the world and
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: counterwork its cause. Force first made conquest, and that conquest

Speaker 1: law till superstition taught the tyrant awe, then shared the tyranny,

Speaker 1: power unseen and mightier far than they. She from the
• 1:09:20
Speaker 1: rending earth and bursting skies, saw gods descend and fiends
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: infernal rise. Here fix'd the dreadful, there the blest abodes.
• 1:09:35
Speaker 1: Fear made her devils and weak hope her gods, God's

Speaker 1: partial changeful passionate unjust whose attributes were rage, revenge, or lust,
• 1:09:50
Speaker 1: such as the souls of cowards might conceive and form'd
• 1:09:55
Speaker 1: like tyrants. Tyrants would believe z zeal. Then not charity
• 1:10:02
Speaker 1: became the guide, and hell was built on spite, and
• 1:10:07
Speaker 1: heaven on pride. Then sacred seemed the ethereal vault. No
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: more altars grew marble, then and reeked with gore. Then
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: first the flamen tasted living food. Next his grim idol
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: smeared with human blood, with Heaven's own thunders shook the
• 1:10:31
Speaker 1: world below and played the god an engine on his foe.
• 1:10:38
Speaker 1: So drives self love, through just and through unjust, to
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: one man's power, ambition, lucre, lust, the same self love
• 1:10:51
Speaker 1: in all becomes the cause of what restrains him. Government

• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: the world's great harmony that springs from order, union, full
• 1:12:47
Speaker 1: consent of things, Where small and great, where weak and mighty,
• 1:12:53
Speaker 1: made to serve, not suffer, strengthen not invade more powerful,
• 1:13:00
Speaker 1: each as needful to the rest, and in proportion as

Speaker 1: his can't be wrong whose life is in the right
• 1:13:37
Speaker 1: in faith and hope. The world will disagree. But all
• 1:13:42
Speaker 1: mankind's concern is charity. All must be false that thwart
• 1:13:49
Speaker 1: this one great end, and all of God that bless

• 1:16:27
Speaker 1: Some place the bliss in action, some in ease. Those
• 1:16:32
Speaker 1: call it pleasure and contentment. These, some sunk to beasts,

Speaker 1: find pleasure, end in pain. Some swell'd to God's confess

• 1:17:23
Speaker 1: thinking right and meaning well, and mourn our various portions

Speaker 1: as we please. Equal is common sense and common ease. Remember, man,
• 1:17:38
Speaker 1: the universal cause acts not by partial but by general laws,
• 1:17:45
Speaker 1: and makes what happiness we justly call subsist, not in
• 1:17:50
Speaker 1: the good of one but all. There's not a blessing

Speaker 1: individuals find, but some way leans and hearkens to the kind.
• 1:18:02
Speaker 1: No bandit fierce, no tyrant mad with pride, no caverned hermit,

• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: But who infers from hence that such are happier shocks

Speaker 1: all common sense. Heaven to mankind impartial we confess if

Speaker 1: all are equal in their happiness, but mutual wants this
• 1:19:09
Speaker 1: happiness increase all Nature's difference keeps all Nature's peace. Condition
• 1:19:18
Speaker 1: circumstance is not the thing. Bliss is the same in

Speaker 1: in him who is, or him who finds a friend.
• 1:19:33
Speaker 1: Heaven breathes through every member of the whole, one common blessing,
• 1:19:39
Speaker 1: as one common soul. But Fortune's gifts, if each alike

Speaker 1: possess'd and each were equal, must not all contest. If

Speaker 1: all the joys of sense, lie in three words, health, peace,
