- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Um, we would like that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but before we get started on our podcast, we wanted to tell you about ourselves and give you a little bit of a history on our stories and why we have Living Life Ranch and why we have this podcast.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And the podcast is to help other people.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: We want to share the knowledge that we've gained and then gain knowledge that we don't have from others that do what we do with the horses and humans.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: So this is gonna be real exciting and real fun.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: And I hope you guys enjoy what we have in store for you this year.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: So a little bit about my history, and some of you know my story already, but I'm just gonna go ahead and um talk about it um so you understand where I'm coming from.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I grew up with a a mom that had mental illness that was not diagnosed properly, or she had no medication for many years, and it was a very trauma chaotic life for me as a a child growing up because she just didn't she didn't know that there was something wrong, and she just she just lived her life how the only way she knew how.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: It was very hard.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: She was only 16 when she had me, and it was rough for her too.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: It it was just a sad situation, and there was a lot of verbal abuse and physical abuse.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: It was hard growing up with that.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: My uh grand my stepgrandfather was a pedophile, so I grew up with that as well.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Um, he is the person that I learned all about horses from, and uh it was sad how that took place, but I am very grateful that I've learned a lot about the horses, even though you know it was hard.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: You know, it requires forgiveness to to move on in your healing.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So I will I do want to say that because now I made it sound like these two people, you know, have a you know, I'm holding the scrudge and I'm not.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: I learned from Jesus as I went through some more trauma in my life that I was creating.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I connected with Jesus and he showed me how important it is to forgive those who hurt you, which some of you are going, What?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I'm never gonna forgive.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: It's really, really hard to switch your mindset on forgiveness, and we're gonna talk about forgiveness eventually, but that's what helped me with my healing journey.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: I did it, I was able to forgive my mom for the abuse and the uh trauma that I experienced, and my stepgrandfather.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So that's part of my story of my healing journey.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And I've been able to move on for that from that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And that for forgiveness helped me with this, with my story.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: It helped me.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And Jesus also shared with me that I was living my life because of my childhood.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: For many years I lived my life as a victim.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: I did not realize I was a victim.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I just was taken each day as it came, and I felt like I deserved what I was getting from my from the abuse that I got it myself into with my spouses.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, I've been married multiple times.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Um it did not go well.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: I because of my victimitality, I kept drawing myself into abusers, people with addictions, those kind of things.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: And until I felt that I was worth loving, it I stayed in that mess.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So a gentleman, one day, I heard a gentleman speaking, and he brought up the verse Philippians 4.13.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: That verse changed my life because it's true.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: When I let Jesus take over and help me, instead of me trying to control everything and try to fix things, I gave it all to him.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: And it's true, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: He is your strength, and he's been my partner through this whole thing, through Living Life Ranch, and now the podcast.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: But he has um he has helped me heal through my journey and helped me get that victorious mindset, I guess, and I live my life that way.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: I don't live in the past, I only look at the past when I'm sharing my story with someone that needs to hear it for some reason.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Or I um if I needed to help another individual with something, I will share something, but I don't live in it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I look in the future and I live towards a future, and God has led me down this wonderful path.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And I'm here to tell you that you can live your life to the fullest, no matter what happens to you, no matter what you've done, you can make your dreams come true.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: That is my hope for people.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: I tell people this all the time.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: If you have a dream and you're with if you're connected with Jesus, He can help you get there.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And it's not gonna happen overnight.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have you have to take baby steps.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: We've taken a lot of baby steps in this journey.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And that's my story is you that is the hope that I want to give other people.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: That's why I'm here.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I left the corporate world.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: I wanted to help other people and share this experience so that others can live their life to the fullest and and and just look at the future and make your dreams come true.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: I love that, Melissa.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: You can just feel the compassion um and grace for just your story coming out.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: And if you get the honor of meeting Melissa, you're gonna see she's the real deal.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Like she is just so joy-filled, and I just love that.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Would you share a little bit?
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: So you were in the corporate world, and then now we're seeing like 2,000 clients a year, we have 16 horses, this is both of our full-time jobs.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: How did that transition happen?
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: That you know, it's just so unbelievable when I look back to even five years ago where we both were.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So can you talk a little bit about how that transition happened?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: So, yes, I will.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So I worked in the, like she said, the corporate war for 30, probably close to 37 years.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And God kept nudging me about going full time with Living Life Ranch.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: And I was so concerned about making sure my family was taken care of and that I had the income that I kept putting it off.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And I said, I know I I'll do it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm gonna do it, but it's just not now's not the time.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Just give me a little longer.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: And then you know I'm having these discussions, and I'm just like asking for more time, and then finally it came to the point where I knew I it was time.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: He was like shoving me out the door of the corporate world, and he uh sent me here full time, and then I shared the news with you and some of the other facilitators that we were that I was gonna go full time.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: When you need construction work done right, call MC Construction Solutions, LLC.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: We're a Kansas City area construction company focused on quality workmanship, dependable service, and projects built to last.

- 9:14SPEAKER_00: We help homeowners and commercial customers get the job done with clear communication and professional results.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: If you have a project you've been putting off, let MC Construction Solutions take a look.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Visit MCconstructionKC.com.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: That's MCconstructionKC.com to request a free estimate.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: That's MC Construction Solutions, built right, built to last.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very exciting.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: And and maybe we'll talk a little bit more about that journey in a future podcast.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: But so, in some ways, my story is a lot different than Melissa.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Um, we're great partners because we're opposites in a lot of ways, and we really complement each other.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: So I grew up, I was the youngest of three girls.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: My parents were missionaries in the Philippines.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I was born and raised there, and it was really a wonderful childhood for me.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: My parents are still alive, they love Jesus, and so pretty much my whole life I knew that I was loved by Jesus.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: My home was a very uh traditional conservative Christian home, and I really bought into all of those teachings, and so I went straight from high school into another conservative evangelical um college, and I really wrapped my identity in this being a good Christian girl, and it really came at a high cost for me, and so I married my then husband, he was going to be a pastor.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: So after graduating college, we went right into mis uh ministry, and I was a youth pastor's wife for 26 years, and you know it worked until it didn't.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: This this facade of trying to earn my way into pleasing God and to doing all the things works for a while and then it doesn't.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And for me, it came out about 16 years after I was married.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: There was just um a day when it finally all broke, and it's hard to explain this, but if you've experienced this, then you just know.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: But I knew if I lived one more day in the place that I was, that I my soul was going to die.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: And there was still some fight in me, and so I actually separated from my husband.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: I took our three kids who I was homeschooling at the time, and I went and lived with my parents um for a couple weeks.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: And it's really the first time in my entire life and in my adult life that I decided to take some time and really look at who I was, more so who God had created me to be.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Um, I had really bought into that verse, die to yourself.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: And I had I had done that so well that I had just killed Janie, and I had no idea who I was outside of ministry, outside of church.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and so I really began this journey, and I'm still on this journey, of really just understanding how much God loves me, and that it's okay for me to love me and to accept his love, and really separating some of the teachings that I had from what actually Jesus said.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: And so going back into the scriptures and really having to look at what did God say about submission and authority and love.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, I think of that verse, love your neighbor as yourself.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: And I had really just focused on the first half of that verse because, you know, I was in the system I was in, I was rewarded.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: You're rewarded for that, um, for doing all these good things.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: And so I really started looking at the second part of that verse.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: How do I love myself?
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: And not in a selfish, self-centered way.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: That's what I had always been taught, that that was selfish, but in a way that honors God.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: And so I began that process.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: And one of the first things that I had to untangle, and probably one of the things I'm most passionate about in this work is helping people untangle their emotions.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: And I had just bought into the belief that um unpleasant emotions were not of God.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: If you had anxiety, you know, you needed to pray harder.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: If you had fear, that was of the devil.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Cast it away.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, there was limited room for sadness or grief or shame, certainly not anger.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: And so I began to realize that I had to process all of those and I didn't know how.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: I actually was completely numb.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: I didn't even know how to process my own emotions.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: I remember I went to counseling a couple times.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: It wasn't a great fit for me.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but I remember one counselor said, Janie, it's like you took a glass vase, and if you break it and you sweep it under the rug, you won't notice the glass shards for quite a while.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: And then eventually those glass shards will work their way up the rug and you'll start stepping on them and you'll bleed.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: And that's where I was.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: I was bleeding and I was leaking, my emotions were leaking out, and I felt so out of control because now anger would show up out of the blue, anxiety would come, and I thought I was I was losing my faith.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: I didn't know what what does this mean?
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And so I began this process, and interestingly enough, during this process, I ended up here at Living Life Ranch.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Now, I actually didn't even know you, Melissa.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: You didn't we attended the same church, but I had never met her.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: But uh a mutual friend said, Janie, I heard you like horses, and I've always, I feel like I was born with horses in my blood.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: I always loved horses.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: I just was drawn to them, even though I'm not a horse, I wasn't a horse expert.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: I just always loved them.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: So this friend said, Would you like to come?
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Melissa's had uh knee surgery, and I we just need you to scoop poop.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Scoop manure.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Can I really?
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Yes, it would be an honor, please.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: I think we had you had maybe five, six horses at the time.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: And so I would show up and I would start to what I call uh scoop therapy, scoop manure therapy, and I didn't really understand why this was happening, but I would show up and these horses would come to me and they were just so powerful and gentle and connected with me, and all of a sudden my eyes would start leaking.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: I'm like, wait, what's happening?
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Because I wasn't a crier.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: And I would just start to cry and release emotions, and even the physical act of scooping the manure was just getting some of this out of my body.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: And I started in this time, I was processing not only emotions, but what were my boundaries?
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: What did it look like when I said no?
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Because I didn't know how to say no, I didn't know I could, and then if I did, I felt guilty for days.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: So, what did it look like to say no?
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Um, and then how to recognize what my body was telling me.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: So, up until this, my body had been screaming, it's not okay, it's not okay.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: And I had just ignored it.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: And so I really spent some time just listening to what my body was saying, and the horses really helped me with that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and again, we'll go into that in future podcasts, but it really was amazing.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: And one of the really instrumental people in my life, even though I never met her, was Leslie Vernick.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: And um through her work, I recognized that I was in an emotionally destructive relationship, and the safest thing that I needed to do was to get out.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: So I did divorce after 26 years.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and I have three beautiful children from that, and that was about four years ago.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: And when I look now at my life, I never lost my faith in Jesus.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: I've always just loved Jesus and God and Holy Spirit.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: But there was a time where I wasn't sure what I believed, and and I had to really separate my faith from what I was being told to what actually Jesus said.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And so I really have a soft space in my heart for people that come in with church hurt or you know, kind of questioning their belief system as well, um, because I totally understand that.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And so why this matters now for me, so I also quit my full-time secure job and stepped out in faith, and um, it was very scary.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: It was, and Melissa and I did this together, and so we would, when one was down, the other would encourage each other.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: It was it's just been a beautiful relationship.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: But we really want to talk a lot about why horses, and there's so many things that horses help humans with, and it's it's really all documented, things like regulation and nervous system and all of these fancy words.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: But instead of like going into that right now, I really want to share a story with you.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I want you to share a little bit of what's happened here with you.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so even just yesterday, I had this story that happened with the horse Summer that I kind of work with.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Summer is a Morgan horse.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: How would you describe him?
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: He's a gallant, beautiful, he's gotten uh a presence like you wouldn't believe.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: He's just like, I know I'm gorgeous.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, he he had the high-energy horse.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: And so I had come early to the ranch to um scoop manure because I'm still I still love to be able to do that.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: And so Melissa and I, two days a week, we take our horses to an addiction recovery center.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: And so that was the day we were gonna load up our horses.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: So I came early and was doing chores, feeling just so grounded and at peace and calm.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: I was listening to worship music, just a wonderful my body was at rest.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: And when I finished doing that, I had about 30 minutes before I needed to get the horses ready for our activity for the day.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: And so I thought, well, what do I want to do with this 30 minutes?
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: And uh summer had rolled and he was dirty.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: So I thought, well, I'll give him a bath.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: He likes that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: And so I grabbed Summer and I tied him up and I started giving him a bath.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: And pretty quickly, in my mind, I thought, you know what?
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: I think I'm gonna give all four horses that we're working with today a bath.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And instantly my body went into performance mode.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: So one thing about me, I don't like to be rushed.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: I like to know, I like to be prepared, I like a plan.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: I knew right away that 30 minutes wasn't enough time to wash four horses.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: My body, I could feel it first in my gut, started to kind of churn.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: It came up into my chest.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: I could just feel it tightening.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And what it looked like to Summer was I started to wash really quickly, probably roughly too.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And so Summer just started pawing like this with his foot.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: He started moving his body, and because of the work we do, I noticed really quickly, thank goodness.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm noticing the horse is not enjoying this.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: What's going on?
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: And I could just hear in my head, Janie, slow down.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: We know that horses move against agenda, and so when I all of a sudden was in a hurry, it spilled out.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: And so I said, Okay, so I took a deep breath and I just calmed my hand.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Instead of scrubbing like this, I just started washing the horse nicely, taking some deep breaths.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: And if Melissa had walked by, she would have said, Oh, look how regulated and calm Janie is.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Guess what happened?
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: What happened?
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Summer didn't change.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Summer was still pond, summer was going nuts.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: And I just have to laugh because this is such a good example.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: My outside appeared to be calm and safe.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: It was doing and going through the motions.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: This really is the story of my life up until then, right?
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: I'm from the outside looking one way.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: But as I checked in that moment, my insides were going nuts, right?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: My heart was still beating.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: And I realized okay, if I'm going to connect with this horse and be an enjoyable experience, I've got to take the time to notice my insides.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: And so It probably took me a good, you know, six minutes to just really start to notice what I was thinking and feeling and calming my breath and um really partnering with the horse.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: And as I started to let go of my body experiences and just taking, you know, taking some breaths, I then caught up with my head and I said, Janie, nobody's asking you to do this.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: You do not have to do this.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Just let it go.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Wash one horse, and if you can, wash a second horse.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: And as soon as I released all that pressure by the way that I had put on myself, then summer instantly calmed down.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: And interestingly enough, I was able to wash all four horses.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: I did have enough time.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, it was very enjoyable for all of the horses and myself.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: And I share that story because that some level of that story is what plays out.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: And horses are so good at asking us, telling us, showing us it's okay to show up as our authentic self.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: And so that just happened yesterday.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: These Melissa and I aren't coming to you as an expert.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: We're not coming to you from a place of we have arrived.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: We are in this journey with you guys.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: We are so excited to share these stories that we have, to interview people who are having these same stories, to talk about how God created us and why it's important for us to understand how God's love changes us.

- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Our goal is to bring you into the presence of Jesus and experience peace.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: And we do that without preaching.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Um, we do that by just being who he's created us to be, getting present, sharing the things that he's done, testifying to his goodness.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: And really, that's what we hope with this podcast is that you listen, that you're encouraged, that you feel like you're not alone.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
