- 1:34All right, Well, now it's time for us to get into Pat
- 1:37Novak for Hire. This is our the first time we have run through a
- 1:42series the second time. We're not going to run through every single episode.
- 1:47I'll get into what we're running through in a second. For those of you
- 1:49who didn't listen, weren't listening the first time when we ran through Pat Novak
- 1:55for Hire at the beginning of the series. The first version of Pat Novae
- 2:00for Hire was born in the fall of nineteen forty six, and there was
- 2:04a lot going on. The Hard Boiled Detective was starting to get huge over
- 2:08radio. It we got in nineteen forty five with Dick Powell and Rogue's Gallery,
- 2:15but nineteen forty six saw the edition of series such as The Fat Man
- 2:21and William Gargan in Ideal in Crime, and perhaps most famously of all the
- 2:25Adventures of Sam Spade. The Hard Boiled stories were defined by more action,
- 2:30sarcastic and unique dialogue, a lot of tough guy talk. But what also
- 2:38was going on in nineteen forty six was that KGO Radio in San Francisco was
- 2:44trying to establish San Francisco as a radio programming hub along with cities such as
- 2:53New York, Chicago, and of course Los Angeles. These efforts were mostly
- 2:59unsuccessful, as they didn't tend to produce very high quality programming, but there
- 3:04was an exception and it also created some opportunities. Jack Webb came to work
- 3:08it for KGO in nineteen forty six out of the Army, and because of
- 3:14the experimental nation nature of the work they were doing there, he got to
- 3:19try a lot of things. He began with One out of Seven, a
- 3:23news and commentary program, and after seven weeks he moved to a comedy show
- 3:29called The Jack Web Show. That comedy variety series aired for five months until
- 3:35he joined with Richard Breen to create the character of Pat Novak for Hire.
- 3:40Pat Novak for Hire took all of the existing tropes of hard boiled private detective
- 3:46shows and took them to the next level in a series that quickly became a
- 3:53favorite with fans. Was one of the true dramatic hits off of KGO.
- 3:59However, writer Richard Breen left for Hollywood and Weba followed him. KGO tried
- 4:05to continue the West Coast syndication of Pat Novak with a different rider and with
- 4:12Ben Morris in the role. However, Pat Novac for Hire wasn't that one
- 4:15of those shows you could just hand off to another writer and actor, certainly
- 4:21not with the talent that was available in San Francisco at the time. In
- 4:27forty seven, Web was tapped for a series called Johnny Madeiro Pure twenty three
- 4:33by the Mutual Network. The series was nearly identical to Pat Novac, so
- 4:39much so that they needed to change the show in order to avoid being sued
- 4:44by ABC over it. Web continued to have a lot of great success in
- 4:49Hollywood, had a few outstanding performances on suspense or on Escape excuse me with
- 4:58a shipment of Mute Fate and Operation for de Leize. Beyond this, most
- 5:04of his roles as early part of his Hollywood career from forty seven to forty
- 5:10nine centered around crime. He played intelligent police foils in Murder and Mister Malone,
- 5:17which we heard recently, and also in the syndicated Michael Shane series The
- 5:23New Adventure of Michael Shane, as well as playing some hoods and detectives who
- 5:28were both on the good and bad side of the law. Also played in
- 5:32a series called Jeff Reagan Investigator that ran the second half of nineteen forty eight.
- 5:39That series ended but would later be revived and ABC had an offer for
- 5:45Web to return to the role he created in Pat Novak for a series that
- 5:49would be nationwide, and so a twenty week series of Pat Novak dramas were
- 5:56set up. People outside of the Western States, this was their first time
- 6:01hearing the series and it definitely left an impression over the course of the next
- 6:06eighteen weeks. We're going to take a listen to this run of Pat Novak
- 6:12for Hire, although two episodes are lost, including the first episode which was
- 6:16entitled John Singer, and this was actually the series that aired right before Web
- 6:26would originate Dragnet. In fact, Web actually did Pat Novak for Hire and
- 6:32Dragnet. Both series were running for four straight weeks, and so we're also
- 6:39trying to replicate that part of the listening experience here. So we've been long
- 6:43winded in the introduction. Let's just go ahead and get into it and take
- 6:46a listen to Pat Novak for Hire. From February twentieth of nineteen forty nine,
- 6:53The Jack of Clubs, Ladies and Gentlemen, The American Broadcasting Company brings
- 6:59to its entire network on a radio's most unusual programs Pat Novack or Hire.
- 7:15Oh sure, I'm pat Novak for hire. That's what the sign on in
- 7:51front of my shop says, Pat Novak for hire. Down here in the
- 7:58San Francisco waterfront. Of it's gotta be that way. You gotta rob a
- 8:03few graves if you want cigarette money. You need lots of work and roomy
- 8:09sleeves if you're going to play a pat hand. Sometimes in a good week
- 8:13we can duck trouble three or four days in a row, and then it
- 8:18creeps up on you in like an old charge account. Well I should have
- 8:22known that. When I went to the bank, I was up to my
- 8:26knees in mud and didn't even know it was rainy season. It was Tuesday.
- 8:31I went by the bank and drop a hundred bucks. It was about
- 8:35time because they were beginning to play handball with my checks. Must have been
- 8:39about eleven o'clock when I got to the window. Hell no, mister Novak,
- 8:45isn't it a grand morning? If it's your choice, stay with it,
- 8:48ah, Yes, deposit a hundred bucks. Yes, let me get
- 8:52to your car. It's right here, I think, yes, here,
- 9:01we are all right. One hundred bucks. Give me a dupe with it,
- 9:03will you? Certainly, my this isn't as big as the vast deposit.
- 9:09Look, bloomer girl just marked the slip. Huh. Oh, I'm
- 9:13sorry, mister Novak. I yes, I'm not used a thousand dollars deposits?
- 9:18What thousand dollars your Friday deposit? I wasn't in here Friday. Oh
- 9:22you must have been. The card says you put in one thousand dollars on
- 9:26Friday. Give me that card. What did Sadah look like? But I
- 9:31will put the dough in? What the guy look like? Oh didn't you?
- 9:35No, Look, we'll double back and try to hang on this time
- 9:37when you I wasn't in here Friday. I don't know anything about an extra
- 9:39grand I. What did the guy look like? I wasn't on guilty Friday.
- 9:43Yeah, I'm not even sure about the fellow today? What fella?
- 9:46There was a man in here to ask about the account? Did this good
- 9:50fairy have a name? No, just credentials. He was from the FBI
- 9:54ier. See is there anything wrong mister? No? No, I don't
- 9:58mind that complexion. I forgot my foundation cream. Oh I should have known
- 10:13right then A mysterious gram tossed into the till, and I didn't wake up
- 10:18the trouble. But I'm a smart boy who'd be the village idiot in the
- 10:22town the size of New York. Well, I left the bank and went
- 10:26up to my apartment. That thousand bucks was already drawing interest. When I
- 10:31came in. She was sitting on the couch drinking my whiskey. She could
- 10:37have all she wanted, a nineteen forty nine panther model pissed the right amount
- 10:43of size twelve in a dress that looked like a well tailored fig leaf.
- 10:48When she was through, looking over, you felt like the Sunday supplement.
- 10:52Hello, mister, I like your problem. That's good. The view is
- 10:58wonderful. Those yours? What's on your mind? How about a drink?
- 11:05How poor you talk? My name is Connie Riley? Make me want too?
- 11:13Sure as you were saying, my name is Connie Riley. Yeah,
- 11:16well I've memorized that much. Gone, here's your drink. Thanks, puts
- 11:22it out all right over next to me. I won't buy it, it's
- 11:28too bad. Go on, Well, here's new bank account. Patsy look
- 11:35sick. If you're here just for the field trials, all right, But
- 11:37if you've got to build goods, trot it out. I will I want
- 11:41that card too, Patsy, I want it ahead of Chris. I'll catch
- 11:46up with another drink in the meantime, you fill in and help me with
- 11:48you. Stop sitting on your hands. Angel. You didn't get that thousand
- 11:52bucks with the sweat of your brow yet somebody patted your account. So you'd
- 11:56be a nice boy. I want you to be nice boy for me at
- 12:03the same rates. The Monterey Rose docs today a passenger named Kirk to me
- 12:07is carrying a jack of clubs, and it means a lot to me.
- 12:11It doesn't mean a thing to me, except the FBI is on my tail.
- 12:13Mister Novak, you're turning a momentary advantage into a crow ball. You
- 12:18take your deal to some other broker. You're in business whether you like it
- 12:22or not. Patsy, You're gonna stub your toe either way. Only to
- 12:26me, it'll be more fun. How about the FBI. You've been frightened
- 12:31by a group of bureaucrats. That's what Trotsky thought. How much, Patsy,
- 12:37how much for that cord? When you get it? The price is
- 12:41a grand You're an amusing guy, Patsy, Yeah, a grand I can
- 12:46afford to be you don't even know what the Jack of Clubs is all about.
- 12:50You never heard of Kirk to me though five minutes ago. But you
- 12:52take things in striders at the whole world belong to you. You're like Adam
- 12:54when you first spot of the gardeners. These all right, little leave it's
- 12:56a thousand bucks. Remember you're sitting on my doorstep. Now either go one
- 12:58home, we're coming in the house. Good, I'll take the cad that's
- 13:05your prize. Not relax, hm, I'll bet you can't pour me another
- 13:16drink? Fancy yeah, sure, in a minute. What comes next?
- 13:22I get three guesses, you've got time to take them. I won't need
- 13:28them all. What's up to you? Come here? Did you ever hear
- 13:35of the early bird? Do I make a nice worm? You're a wriggle
- 13:41like one. Aren't you raising the prize? A little miss? To know
- 13:46that straight? Eighteen percent? Darling. That's too bad. I wasn't even
- 13:54gonna scream. The next place I live is gonna be a cave. Just
- 13:58a minutely, hello novak, oh hellman? Oh? Well, am I
- 14:05interrupting anything? No? We were just going over an old seed catalog.
- 14:09Miss Riley, missus inspector Helman. San Francisco Police, Good morning, inspector.
- 14:13Don't bother to arrest me. Now, I'm just leasy, so soon
- 14:16my sentiments. Bye bye, Patsy. You can get me at the concert
- 14:22on push she so you're around? Sure, well you're slipping, Novak,
- 14:30no rain check? All right, funny man, what's your problem? You?
- 14:33Do you ever see this guy before? Let me see. He's an
- 14:37awful looking thug. Yeah, who is it? Your father? A guy
- 14:39by the name of Max Coleman. The FBI trailed him to your bank Friday.
- 14:45They think he gave you a thousand bucks. Yeah, where'd you get
- 14:46the thousand bucks? Novak? What do you care? Helman? Maybe a
- 14:48relative, maybe a made nants. Nobody's related to you. Novak. You're
- 14:50on a gam lover, and I'm here to push your father in. Max
- 14:54Coleman buys his groceries with foreign do what are you weeping about? Arrest the
- 14:56guy if you don't like him. This government microfilm come in on the Monterey
- 15:00Roads. That thousand bucks makes you a contact man for Coleman to send the
- 15:03FBI over them. Where do you fit in waiting for somebody to drop some
- 15:05loose change? You're my project Novak. When they asked us for help,
- 15:09I stuffed the ballot box to get you. Yea, So relax. I'm
- 15:13want to spend the rest of the day here. You're not going to leave
- 15:16the living room. I got to spend the day with you. I'll take
- 15:18knockout drops, shoot yourself. That's just that's good, Scott. You wouldn't
- 15:24know the cheap liquors out in the kitchen closet. That's for you, all
- 15:26right. Oh, by the stove of him, that's right. What are
- 15:31you keep in here? Novak? Mops? And where'd you buy this one?
- 15:35What are you talking about? Where did you buy this one? Smart
- 15:37man? Hellman wasn't right. I could tell right away it wasn't a mop
- 15:54when Helman pushed him out here, rolled out on a littlenoleum for a little
- 16:00guy, except for a piece of cord around his throat tied in a funny
- 16:03knot. It was deader than a broken drum. Somebody pulled too hard on
- 16:08that piece of cord. The vians were standing out in his forehead, and
- 16:14his face looked like a roadmap lying there on the floor. It wasn't pretty.
- 16:18Hellman thought so too. Who is he? Novak? Your father.
- 16:22I've never seen him in my closet before. Hellman, finders keepers. You
- 16:25roll him? Yeah, there's nothing there. Where is his wallet? You'll
- 16:33get there by instinct? Yeah, yeah, yeah, here it is.
- 16:38His name is Kirk Toomey. That helps? Who is he? The guy
- 16:45on the mono ray Rose, the one with the micro film? I guess
- 16:48I thought you didn't know anything about it. How do you know it came
- 16:49from the mono rail roads my dream book, Helman. What happens now?
- 16:56Nothing except I'm on the case now and you've got trouble in a major key.
- 17:00You don't think I killed this guy? I don't know, did you?
- 17:02You better hop off and tail led girl? She was making herself at
- 17:03home when I got here. Yeah, how do I know? You're not
- 17:07in it together? It don't co her. Maybe she's lobanim Leopold. When
- 17:10you're through with her, you might hit the mono ray and start looking for
- 17:11a jack of Club some more dream book, Novak. Everybody's looking for a
- 17:15jacket Club's Helman. It must be the end of the rainbow. That's where
- 17:17you're gonna find that microfilm. In the meantime, you stay handy, Novak.
- 17:21I want to split you with the FBI. You don't think I'm gonna
- 17:23take the rap for junior here, do you? It says that in my
- 17:26book, it's relaxed until I'm ready to pick you up. I only have
- 17:30to find a couple of things. Well, it'll be a long time,
- 17:32Helman. You can't find your hip pocket with radar. Yeah, I'll be
- 17:36around soon, Novak, I'll bother to pack your bags. You'll be traveling
- 17:40like well. When Hellman left, I knew I was a second division club
- 17:53that phony plan in the bank to tie up with Max Coleman. And that's
- 17:59stiff in the kitchen. Me look real bad. I had to do something
- 18:03in a hurry, because the way things stood, I had about as much
- 18:06chance as a lawn party in a monsoon. There were a lot of bases
- 18:10to tag, so I looked up jock O Madigan, a next doctor who
- 18:14invented the hangover, but a good guy. I finally found him over in
- 18:18North Beach, a little joint called Loopos. He was eating pizza with one
- 18:22hand and strangling a bottle of wine with the other. Hello, Patsy,
- 18:26oh frank bottle of wine from Mission Nofak No, I'm short on time,
- 18:30Jocko, that's the way you're wrong, Patchy. People always say it,
- 18:34but it's a lie. Will you calm down a minute. You will say
- 18:37you're short on time, but you have all the time there is. It's
- 18:41the one thing that keeps you from being the biggest. There are only twenty
- 18:45four hours in the day, and that gives you as much time as Napoleon
- 18:48or Alexander Head. Would you shut up a minute and put on that wine.
- 18:52I'm celebrating, Patsy. I'm celebrating mission day. Mission day's over.
- 18:56I'm a native son. We celebrate longer. Now. Look I'm behind the
- 19:00eight ball again. Isn't it getting kind of crowded back there? What's the
- 19:06matter? Somebody strangled the guy and put him in my broom closet. When
- 19:10did you find him? I didn't, Helman did. There's a girl named
- 19:12Connie Riley looks good for the job. Why doesn't Helman Booker? Then he's
- 19:17still picking up the pieces. The dead guy is Kirk Toomey. He was
- 19:19set to smuggle in some microfilm that says here, I'm contact you gotta help
- 19:23me, Jocko, You've got me confused with the travel agency. I want
- 19:29you to hop down a headquarters. Get all the dope you can on this
- 19:30guy to me. I'm gonna look up Connie Riley. How did she get
- 19:33in the picture? What difference does it make? She's a wrestler. I'm
- 19:36at this morning. I get out of headquarters, will you? That's why
- 19:38I like you, Pets. You like a piece of blank verse, A
- 19:42bad piece of blank verse. All right, Jocko, I'm gonna make like
- 19:45a strip of bacon. If I don't get going, I stay close to
- 19:48headquarters. If anything looks good, contact me at Connie Riley's here at this
- 19:52address. All right? How many times shall I knock? Love it?
- 20:08I left, Jocko and dropped by the apartment. I was smart and full
- 20:11of courage, like a field mouse. At Bay. The police had already
- 20:17been there. There was fingerprint powder all over. The two bottles of whiskey
- 20:21were going. They'd moved Laughing Boy out of the kitchen, and so I
- 20:26sat on trying to add things up. I had a short list of friends
- 20:30to see, Connie, Max Coleman, and whoever this guy Chris was.
- 20:37I had to show up with one of them or approved that Kurt Toomey hung
- 20:40himself in my closet. I was getting ready to borrow a piece of cord
- 20:44myself and the phone rang. Yeah, helmet, I'm thrilled. What's on
- 20:49your mind? I just call on your go friend. What you say?
- 20:52Nothing? She wasn't there? Has him been there since ten o'clock this morning?
- 20:56That's funny. Yeah, you know where she is? How would I
- 20:59know? Just thought she might be in your closet. Picked up too many
- 21:03stuff on the Monterey roads. Yeah, would you find on the usual stuff
- 21:07a few closed I'm shaving equipment to razor blades, to the past. And
- 21:10the pack of playing cards, pack of cards, well you know where to
- 21:11go from their helmet, I thought I did grab that jacket clubs? Will
- 21:15it ten of hots do? Uh huh? That's right, Novak, a
- 21:18nice fat deck. The jacket clubs is missing. Oh you're always too little,
- 21:22too late, helmet. I just thought I let you know, friend,
- 21:23in case you started a bridge game with fifty three cards in the deck.
- 21:26Good night. Oh I was losing money fast, like a street carnival
- 21:42and death valley. Well, one or two things happened. Somebody got on
- 21:48that boat and took the jacket clubs while Toomey was at my apartment, or
- 21:52maybe he brought it with him. If he brought it with him, Connie
- 21:56was a possibility, or somebody that got there ahead of Connie. Well,
- 22:00anyway, I had to work fast now because whoever had that card wasn't gonna
- 22:03put it on a market street float. About ten minutes later I got across
- 22:08Union Square and up Bush Street. When I got to Connie's apartment, it
- 22:14was about ten o'clock. I got in the back door and started through.
- 22:18She wasn't there, So I went to work looking for that jacket clubs.
- 22:22It was real easy. I tried the desk and then her bureau drawer.
- 22:29You know, I black Chiffon's coming Back in style, because that's where I
- 22:32found a card. It looked nice nestling there. Put it in my pocket,
- 22:37and that's as far as I got. You run the Lisery County here.
- 22:41Know they sounded like a guy named Chris. If it makes you feel
- 22:45goot it should we put on the light? No, no, let's stunt.
- 22:48Put on the light. His gun might upset you. The police are
- 22:52looking for you, Chris. You need more than the dark. I understand
- 22:56they're looking for you. Nove that Riley go kind of you on a spot.
- 23:02Tell you what I'll do though, Yeah, you'll give me a thousand
- 23:04dollars for the jacket clubs. I started to say five hundred around here.
- 23:08That's a whisper and even grand mister, you're trying to collect too many places
- 23:14want the five hundred. No, I don't all right, but I think
- 23:19you're a bum business man. Jacko found me catnapping on Connie's bare rug.
- 23:40Must have been right after the sapping. When I woke up, Jacko was
- 23:44thumbing my head like a housewife with a bull of margarine. I fell around
- 23:48and waited for him to put the floor in again. I reached in my
- 23:52pocket. The jacket Clubs was gone, and I started to talk Jocko,
- 24:02did you expect someone better help me up with you? I've helped you get
- 24:08up so much. I feel like one of the right brothers. I just
- 24:14lost round three. Yeah, I saw him getting into the car. Did
- 24:18you get a number like Hellman has got yours? Here? It is anything
- 24:23breakdown at homicide. They got all the dope on to me. They had
- 24:27to piece it together. He had no fingerprint record, and they finally confilmed
- 24:33things with a set of false teeth. What does it prove? Nothing much
- 24:37except you probably killed him. He was a foreign agent who picked up microfilm
- 24:42at Shanghai. Your girlfriend is pretty Did they find her? Yeah? Dead?
- 24:49No, Patsy, you gotta stop thinking of people who's being dead all
- 24:53the time. It's demoralizing what you say. She denied knowing anything about to
- 24:59me, Jocko, I'm sure she killed that guy up in my apartment.
- 25:03I'd stake my life on it, expertly put patchy. I think Hellman believes
- 25:07her, after all, she's the only lead. What about Max Coleman?
- 25:11Like I had rigged my bank account? Are they letting him die on the
- 25:15vine? I was getting to that your friend Max Coleman has disappeared. I
- 25:19thought he was being tailed. The kite got away here used my aspir well.
- 25:33I took a boat out to the Monterey Rose, but that was a
- 25:37waste of time. Helman had it covered like a car Pallen. I still
- 25:42had the license number to Chris's car, but that didn't do any good.
- 25:47Even if I found him, all I could do was point my finger.
- 25:51There was still a lot of things that didn't fall into place. One of
- 25:53them was how come that Jacket Clubs was so easy to find in Connie's apartment.
- 26:00She hadn't hit it very well, but after all, maybe that was
- 26:03a habit with her. Things didn't look any better. The next morning,
- 26:10I went into a restaurant next to the Press Club for some breakfast. The
- 26:14chronicle was lying on the counter. We were in second place because it was
- 26:18a Torso murder all over page one. That second cup of coffee saved me
- 26:23because right after that I spotted it on one of the back pages, a
- 26:26picture and a small story about some unidentified guy who had been killed over in
- 26:30Oakland. I couldn't match the picture too well with Hellman snapshot of Max Coleman,
- 26:37but it looked like my best break so far. I got over to
- 26:41Oakland and I went straight to the morgue. The guy in the morgue was
- 26:44chatty. Which fella you want to stay? Is? The unidentified guy?
- 26:48Must have come in last night? Sure, down this way? Okay?
- 26:56How do you like on Maud? One of my favorite It's bigger in San
- 27:00Francisco? Yeah I figured that. Sure, most people don't know that,
- 27:04but it's true, bigger in San Francisco. Here we are right hand.
- 27:11Help me slide it out. Sure, roller bearings makes it a lot easier.
- 27:22Here, let me get that sheet. Well, well, recognize him?
- 27:29Yeah, what time did he die? Carner's report here on the toe
- 27:33tag about eleven o'clock last night? Two gunshots, thirty eight caliber festival.
- 27:40That's good. Don't look good to me? Was he a friend of yours
- 27:45relative or something? Yeah? A relative? He's my maiden aunt. It
- 27:57was Max Coleman, all right, was only half the problem. I had
- 28:02some of the answers, but not enough. It's like trying to weave a
- 28:04rug with a spinning wheel and a bucket of sand. Well, anyway,
- 28:08I got to a payphone and I called Jocko. I told him to run
- 28:12down that license number, and I headed back across the bridge. When I
- 28:17found Jocko, he said the car was registered in the name of Christopher Downs,
- 28:21who lived up on Taylor Street. And that was enough of a lead.
- 28:23So I telephoned Helman. It took about a half a minute to draw
- 28:27a map. Hello Hellman, talking this novak. You still got Connie Riley
- 28:32down there? No, I say, match boxes. Why when did you
- 28:36leave last night? About nine thirty? It was smart, Helman? Why
- 28:38you better put a guard in her front door, and get up the seven
- 28:41twenty Taylor Street. The apartment of Christopher Downs a light entry. Now,
- 28:45climb out of that Coleman and get going. I'll meet you up there in
- 28:45ten minutes. Street. Yeah, it's up on the hill. That's good,
- 28:48Novak, I can roll you all the way down. When Jacko and
- 29:04I got up the Down's apartment, there was nobody home. I said a
- 29:07fast prayer for Connie, and I began going through down stuff for a thirty
- 29:11eight caliber revolver. Jacko was looking too over in the liquor cabinet. That's
- 29:18as far as we got. Scavenger hunt, mister Novak, Hello, Chris,
- 29:22you haven't seen a thirty eight are on? Just one that's in my
- 29:25pocket, the same one that killed Max Coleman. You're gonna run out of
- 29:29breath, Novak, Slow down. I'm in second already, mister. I
- 29:32can't stop, and you won't mind a short ride out the door and down
- 29:36the back stairs. Should we bring the lap robe. There's nothing to worry
- 29:38about. It's a short trip. You won't even have to wire other folks.
- 29:48We went down the back way and into the garage next door. We
- 29:52started for a big car in the corner. All right, get in out
- 29:59the airport road, Sure, I relax, snowback from here. You look
- 30:04like a duck in the pond. All right, Joe, watch time,
- 30:15job Joe? Why top is another car coming in? You're right, Chris,
- 30:22it was a short ride you all right? No back, stop acting
- 30:26like a mother, hen Helm and take this guy's gun, all right,
- 30:27mister good at who is he? Christopher Downs? He killed Max Coleman last
- 30:32night? Does he convince you, mister, not entirely? Well? Thirty
- 30:36eight? Will the open police have two slugs to fit that gun? You
- 30:37need more? Now, I'm afraid you've got all the trump snow back,
- 30:42all right, let's go you. Let's see you earn that copp upping Know
- 30:48that he ain't going far well, Helman, Now you can arrest him for
- 30:57jay walk. Yeah, it's too bad. He could have told you a
- 31:03lot about that stuff in my closet. Well, go pick him up,
- 31:08Helman, and don't forget that jacket clubs in his pocket. Well it worked
- 31:21out all right. I left Helman, dropped my headquarters to leave a note,
- 31:25and I went home to my apartment. Connie was there. The whiskey
- 31:30was out again. She looks real good sitting there in a white crape dress.
- 31:37It was one of those tight fitting babies that make a bathing suit look
- 31:40like a toga. I told her all about Chris and Max Coleman, and
- 31:45we forgot about everything but the Olympics. And she put her arms around you.
- 31:51It was a real squeeze. It felt like an old tube of shaving
- 31:55cream. I was pouring a drink from the doorbelly. Hello Helman, You
- 32:05ready to know that? Sure, but don't stand there gaping arrested for murder.
- 32:08Wait a minute, slow down, Patsy. All right, chum,
- 32:12it's you were me. I'll be a nice boy, I am. That's
- 32:14why you go to Helman. Come on, lady, do you think of
- 32:15an answer for that guy that you left in my closet. I didn't leave
- 32:19any guy in your closet. You'll have to say it louder, baby.
- 32:21They found the story about the cord. That cord came out of your kitchen.
- 32:25You're a big mouth cold yeah, you can put that in both face.
- 32:34How did you know you're the only one could have taken that jacket clubs
- 32:38here in the apartment. That and one other thing. Yeah, that not
- 32:45in the cord. It was a funny not you've got an elastic guarder there.
- 32:52It's too big, so you're tied a knod in it. The same
- 32:55funny not that choked Kirk Tony. Yeah, a funny guy. I know.
- 33:02Yeah, you're nice, but you're a hard handle. I should have
- 33:12killed you or married you. Ready helmn m Well, Jacket Clubs was a
- 33:42phony right from the start. Somebody told Kirk Toomey to deal with me.
- 33:45When he came to my apartment, Connie was waiting. She got jumpy and
- 33:50killed him. I got there too soon, so she had to stall me
- 33:53off. When she got home she found out that the Jacket Clubs was a
- 33:57phone. She left it complaints and Chris gobbled up the bait. When he
- 34:02discovered there was no microfilm, he went gunning for Max Coleman. Max was
- 34:07an innocent thief, lying low, waiting to buy it from me, So
- 34:12all three of them were after a phony. Card I began to suspect it
- 34:16was funny because everybody hung around. If it was the McCoy, conne would
- 34:22have cleared out the same for Chris. The microfilm, well, it was
- 34:30in Hellman's desk, but he didn't know it. Jocko finally tumbled. The
- 34:36report said that Kirk Toomey had false teeth. When Hellman picked up his stuff
- 34:40on the ship, it was a tube of toothpaste, you know, clean
- 34:45false teeth with a toothpaste. The word must have gotten around that the microfilm
- 34:51was inside that Jack of clubs, so Kirk crossed him up and put it
- 34:55in a tube of toothpaste. Well that's all. Well, accept the canceled
- 35:02nine thousand dollars deposits. Hellman said it was lucky I noticed her garter.
- 35:08Lucky. Well, she had the street anders scenes, didn't she. The

- 36:30of the series terms of Novak's thinking, and even though it's not the first
- 36:37episode, it still gives great little looks at Jocko in particular. I liked
- 36:43his speech for this week. He always gives interesting philosophical thoughts and of course
- 36:49Inspector Hellman. And of course there is much more to come next week,
