Latest / Foul Territory / AJ Pierzynski on Tim Kurkjian’s “Is This A Great Game, Or What?”
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to Is this a great game or what
- 0:07Speaker 1: with the Hall of Famer Tim Kirkshon. I'm his son,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jeff Kirkshon. Another day at Ironhill Brewery here in the
- 0:13Speaker 1: East Market, that day two of live podcasting, and oh
- 0:19Speaker 1: my gosh, what a night we had for home run
- 0:23Speaker 1: derby action last night.
- 0:24Speaker 2: At Citizens Bank Park.
- 0:25Speaker 3: It was a celebration of baseball last night, Jeff, which
- 0:28Speaker 3: I told you is what the All Star Game was
- 0:31Speaker 3: supposed to be about. It's three days of great baseball
- 0:35Speaker 3: from Roddery and last night that was the most dramatic
- 0:39Speaker 3: home run derby that I've ever covered, and I've covered
- 0:42Speaker 3: every one of them. Jordan Walker needed to hit a
- 0:45Speaker 3: home run in each of his final six swings in
- 0:49Speaker 3: order to beat the hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber, and then
- 0:53Speaker 3: he did it. It was incredible. I've never seen anything
- 0:58Speaker 3: quite like it.
- 0:59Speaker 4: And I interviewed Walker for radio right after the game
- 1:02Speaker 4: and I said, you know, you sent a lot of
- 1:05Speaker 4: people from Philadelphia home really unhappy.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Are you okay with that? He goes, I am very
- 1:10Speaker 3: okay with doing that. That's how great the night was.
- 1:13Speaker 3: And it was so good. The Philly fans were so
- 1:16Speaker 3: much gosh, Yeah, Babe booed Wilson Catrere's had.
- 1:21Speaker 4: A home run derby.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I don't ever remember that happening, not like to that extent.
- 1:26Speaker 3: And yet Wilson Katreras thought it was thought it was
- 1:29Speaker 3: great that they he played in the village so beautifully
- 1:33Speaker 3: last night.
- 1:34Speaker 4: That made that was really special.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Also, you know, living in the suburbs of Philly, my
- 1:38Speaker 3: wife and I are raising two Phillies fans at this point.
- 1:42Speaker 1: My daughter loves the Phillies. Our son is five weeks old.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He doesn't know it yet, but he's gonna love him too.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But my mother in law was on the couch watching
- 1:50Speaker 1: the home run derby with us, and listen. She is
- 1:53Speaker 1: an incredible grandmother, incredible mom, a great Catholic, and she
- 1:57Speaker 1: was she was upset that the fans were at the
- 2:00Speaker 1: All Star Game, and I said, listen, this is Philadelphia.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And one thing that really upset her was when the
- 2:07Speaker 1: booze would come in when kids would shy away from
- 2:10Speaker 1: catching a ball in the outfield, And I said, Nana,
- 2:13Speaker 1: the difference is when they make a great catch, they're
- 2:16Speaker 1: screaming louder than some of the home runs.
- 2:19Speaker 4: That were hit.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So they want to see great plays. They want to
- 2:21Speaker 1: see these kids out there. I thought, Dad, and you
- 2:24Speaker 1: said this before when we were chatting.
- 2:26Speaker 2: The energy.
- 2:27Speaker 3: The electricity in that stadium was that of World Series
- 2:32Speaker 3: caliber level, and I think that's part of the reason
- 2:34Speaker 3: why some of these players were thinking.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I did not expect. Usually in years.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Past, when I've gone to home run Derby's, I would
- 2:40Speaker 3: say it's a little more laxed, right, It's a little
- 2:42Speaker 3: more fun because the structure is not like that of
- 2:45Speaker 3: a baseball game, and this was completely different. This was
- 2:48Speaker 3: Playoff caliber energy.
- 2:49Speaker 4: It was amazing.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And Kyle Schwarber was Kyle Schwarber last night, which is
- 2:54Speaker 3: all we want him to be is just be his genuine,
- 2:57Speaker 3: authentic rank entertaining else.
- 3:00Speaker 4: He's not there for him, He's there for the crowd.
- 3:03Speaker 3: He wants everybody to have an amazing time at Citizens
- 3:07Speaker 3: Bank Park, and they did, even though they lost, to
- 3:10Speaker 3: be lost by one homer to Jordan Walker.
- 3:12Speaker 4: It was absolutely fabulous.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I reviewed him on the radio and he said, look
- 3:18Speaker 3: at I said him, first question, like everyone in the
- 3:21Speaker 3: stands is screaming standing your name, and he said, this
- 3:25Speaker 3: place is the greatest. I've never seen anything quite like
- 3:27Speaker 3: this and that's what made the home run Derby so
- 3:30Speaker 3: so good. I know the hometown heroes didn't end up
- 3:33Speaker 3: taking it home for Kyle Schwber or Bryce Harper, but
- 3:36Speaker 3: nonetheless it was a home run derby.
- 3:38Speaker 2: To remember.
- 3:39Speaker 1: My buddies in my group text we call it balls life.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You know, they mostly lead with football and sometimes tennis
- 3:45Speaker 1: and other sports. But they all agreed it was an
- 3:48Speaker 1: unbelievable structure. We were worried about, no timer, how many
- 3:51Speaker 1: balls are people going to be taking? But ultimately I
- 3:53Speaker 1: think the structure really did prove that this is a
- 3:56Speaker 1: good way of going about right.
- 3:57Speaker 4: And Jordan Walker deserved to win because he.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Never lost his pois knowing I make one more out
- 4:04Speaker 3: here and it's all over. And he's the first Cardinal
- 4:08Speaker 3: ever to win the home run Derby. So Mark Maguire
- 4:11Speaker 3: never did, Albert Poolhol never did.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You would think so, David ex nine never did.
- 4:17Speaker 4: And what was your point about.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Jordan Walker when you look at him my favorite, Well,
- 4:22Speaker 3: the Cardinals have had the same jerseys for years.
- 4:24Speaker 2: He looks like he could have played.
- 4:25Speaker 3: With Lou Brock, right, you know that many years ago,
- 4:28Speaker 3: because he's got that beautiful go team that makes it
- 4:30Speaker 3: look like he made the nineteen eighty one All Star
- 4:32Speaker 3: team and he's only twenty four, right, And his parents
- 4:35Speaker 3: were in the crowd and they were like cheering.
- 4:37Speaker 4: They ran on the shields.
- 4:38Speaker 3: After the game, they went right into the the you
- 4:42Speaker 3: know the interview on Netflix, like the TV interview that
- 4:45Speaker 3: dad was in there. It was just such a beautiful,
- 4:48Speaker 3: beautiful celebration and the whole father and son thing. Jeff
- 4:52Speaker 3: just really does it for me at these things when
- 4:54Speaker 3: a father pitches to a son. Ben Rice's dad pitched
- 4:57Speaker 3: to him last night, and Jack Kagle oons pitch to
- 5:00Speaker 3: him last night. So I talked to his dad and
- 5:04Speaker 3: he said, you know, he's a high school baseball coach
- 5:06Speaker 3: and he said, yeah, I throw five hundred VP pitches
- 5:10Speaker 3: every day still, So it wasn't like he wasn't prepared
- 5:13Speaker 3: for this. And he said his son called him and said,
- 5:16Speaker 3: anyone want to go.
- 5:17Speaker 4: To Philadelphia when he found out.
- 5:19Speaker 3: He's in the home run Derby and his dad, of
- 5:20Speaker 3: course was the first drive everything. Yes, yeah, And I said,
- 5:24Speaker 3: did you throw to him like every day when he
- 5:26Speaker 3: was a kid, and he goes, oh three times a day.
- 5:29Speaker 3: He would call me at work and say, Dad, when
- 5:31Speaker 3: are you coming home? We have to hit and sometimes
- 5:34Speaker 3: they would hit three times during a day and after
- 5:37Speaker 3: dinner he would say, can we go hit again?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Like unbelievable.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And by the way, Jack Kaglione has a size seventeen
- 5:44Speaker 3: shoes now seventeen.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I wear that.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I wear a seven and a half. So Rabbi and
- 5:50Speaker 3: I Carl Rabbits and I he wears a seven and
- 5:52Speaker 3: a half. Also together our shoe size is a fifteen goodbye,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and he's wearing a seventeen.
- 5:57Speaker 4: So I asked him, what's the deal with your feet?
- 6:00Speaker 3: And he goes, He goes, I went through more shoes
- 6:02Speaker 3: than any kid has ever and he said his dad
- 6:06Speaker 3: told me, he said when he was eleven years old.
- 6:10Speaker 4: He said, I was wearing his hand me down shoes,
- 6:15Speaker 4: my son's.
- 6:15Speaker 3: When he was eleven years old, and he would always say, Dad,
- 6:18Speaker 3: I need new shoes. And he said, Jack, I just
- 6:20Speaker 3: bought you new shoes three months ago, because well, I
- 6:23Speaker 3: grew out of them already. So these are some of
- 6:25Speaker 3: the million stories that you get at when you come
- 6:29Speaker 3: to All Star game like this, where dad's and fathers
- 6:32Speaker 3: and fathers and sons, it's so so good.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Who else did you see when you were on the field.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Well, I saw Mary Bonds last night. He never had
- 6:39Speaker 4: a bad moment with Barry Bonds, let's be clear.
- 6:42Speaker 3: But I haven't had a whole lot of warm moments
- 6:44Speaker 3: with Barry Bonds either. Okay, but I saw him on
- 6:46Speaker 3: the field last night and he walked by me and
- 6:48Speaker 3: I looked at him, and he came over and he
- 6:51Speaker 3: shook my hand. So I told him the Will's alistoris
- 6:54Speaker 3: zalatoris story. You know, the golfer we had on that.
- 6:58Speaker 3: You know, he grew up as Verry Bonds his favorite.
- 7:01Speaker 3: He loved Barry Bonds more than anything, right, I mean,
- 7:03Speaker 3: he grew up in the Bay Area. He grew up
- 7:05Speaker 3: in that era of Bonds, JT. Snow and those great teams.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And you asked him, You said, well, if you got
- 7:11Speaker 1: to meet Barry Bond, first of all, yes him, if
- 7:13Speaker 1: he had, and he hadn't. He said, if you got
- 7:14Speaker 1: to meet it, what's the first question you would ask him?
- 7:16Speaker 4: And he Will said, how many shots you want up front? Nine?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Which so I related this to Barry Bonds.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And he laughed out loud, which is not easy to
- 7:25Speaker 3: do sometimes. And he goes, tell him, I need at
- 7:28Speaker 3: least one shot per whole. So so that's nine shots
- 7:31Speaker 3: on the front nine. And Barry, I'm sure, is a
- 7:34Speaker 3: great player, but he's not will Zlatour's that's for sure. Well,
- 7:37Speaker 3: we're gonna have to report back to Will and let
- 7:39Speaker 3: him know that you actually asked him the question that
- 7:42Speaker 3: he wanted to ask Barry Bonds because to make that
- 7:44Speaker 3: connection would be ready. And I also saw Ken Griffey
- 7:46Speaker 3: Junior last night because he always comes to the Home
- 7:49Speaker 3: Run Derby and he brings with him his camera because
- 7:52Speaker 3: he's a great photographer, much like Randy Johnson is. So
- 7:56Speaker 3: here the only three time winner of the Home Run
- 7:58Speaker 3: Derby is like going through all the players, shaking everybody's hand,
- 8:02Speaker 3: and I'm thinking, this is Ken Griffith Junior.
- 8:05Speaker 4: But he sees me.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I see him like once a year. Now, we don't
- 8:08Speaker 3: cross bass all the time. But again last night he
- 8:11Speaker 3: looked at me and he just said, you know, people retire,
- 8:14Speaker 3: You know that, right, So it was his way of saying,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you're allowed to retire whatever you want.
- 8:20Speaker 4: And I'm thinking, all right, I'm sixty nine years old.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I get your point, but you don't have to say
- 8:25Speaker 3: that every time you see me. Yeah, we launched this
- 8:27Speaker 3: podcast in retirement age, so this is your backup plan
- 8:31Speaker 3: if you ever retire.
- 8:32Speaker 2: We're still gonna keep doing this. This a great game
- 8:34Speaker 2: or what?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Right? Right? Absolutely? So.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I also saw Mike Trout last night with his two
- 8:39Speaker 3: little kids, and on this show we've mentioned many times
- 8:42Speaker 3: that my first grandson, Carson, is a big, big Pokemon fan.
- 8:48Speaker 4: So I went and talked to Mike.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Trout briefly yesterday before the game about Pokemon cards and said,
- 8:53Speaker 3: my five year old loves loves Pokemon, and he got
- 8:57Speaker 3: the biggest smile in his face.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I said, I'm taking into the Pokemon store a few times.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Mike Trout thought that was the greatest thing ever.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Well, you saw Jacob Misrawski's glove.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yes, the All Star Special glove features a charred card
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the glove. Right, I've never seen anything like it before. Right,
- 9:15Speaker 3: And your sister Kelly Call sent me that picture this morning.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I said, I've told you this before. He carries this
- 9:22Speaker 3: in his glove. It's absolutely price. So it was a
- 9:25Speaker 3: great night at the home run Derby. Philadelphia really showed
- 9:28Speaker 3: well last night, the fans, everyone was great. And now
- 9:32Speaker 3: now we get the All Star game.
- 9:34Speaker 4: This is so cool.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And your boy Christopher Sanchez is going to start the
- 9:39Speaker 3: All Star Game and you being a Phillies fan, that's
- 9:41Speaker 3: that's exciting well, and it being at his home ballpark
- 9:44Speaker 3: is really really special. They'll have three starters in Schwarber,
- 9:48Speaker 3: Marsh Sanchez. It's gonna be a really exciting energy.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm getting there when the gates open because there's no
- 9:54Speaker 1: way I'm missing the energy around this and the energy
- 9:57Speaker 1: around the city. We're in Philadelphia right now, We're at
- 10:00Speaker 1: Iron Hill Brewery. We love them for hosting us in
- 10:03Speaker 1: foul territory as well. Thank you so much for having
- 10:05Speaker 1: us and the Philly Show. We love that great show.
- 10:08Speaker 1: The energy in here has been so incredible and it's
- 10:12Speaker 1: gonna be even better at the All Star Game tonight.
- 10:14Speaker 1: But you said something earlier, Dad, He said that Home
- 10:17Speaker 1: Run Derby was great. Tonight's game doesn't have.
- 10:20Speaker 3: To be unbelievable, but as to at least be good
- 10:23Speaker 3: to call this a great All Star week. It'll be
- 10:25Speaker 3: good because all All Star games are good as long
- 10:28Speaker 3: as you go in and understand this is about the
- 10:31Speaker 3: entertainment of the game, not necessarily.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Who wins or loses.
- 10:34Speaker 3: But we know this there's nobody going in for an
- 10:38Speaker 3: uncontested layup and an uncontested dunk. In the All Star Game,
- 10:42Speaker 3: those guys are out there throwing as hard as they
- 10:44Speaker 3: can and they want to strike people out. And in
- 10:46Speaker 3: a few minutes, we're gonna give you the All Team
- 10:48Speaker 3: tim from the All Star Game. Okay, right, So before
- 10:53Speaker 3: we jump into that and on this state in baseball history,
- 10:56Speaker 3: I want to take a second to thank one of
- 10:59Speaker 3: our sponsors, guys a foul Territory, take it away.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Many people have this problem. I want to eat healthy.
- 11:04Speaker 5: I have the willpower, I don't have the time and
- 11:07Speaker 5: the organization. I need help. What do you do?
- 11:10Speaker 6: I mean you go to factor. I got two boys
- 11:13Speaker 6: that are looking for the gains and they always come
- 11:15Speaker 6: in the house.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Which I'm looking for food.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Now they have actual healthy food that is great for them,
- 11:22Speaker 6: and you know what, it's ready in the fridge for
- 11:24Speaker 6: them to pop in and make it right away.
- 11:27Speaker 5: And they have meals built around your goals. It could
- 11:30Speaker 5: be weight loss, overall nutrition gains, more protein, fresh, never frozen,
- 11:35Speaker 5: over one hundred rotating weekly meals, including globally inspired flavors
- 11:41Speaker 5: like Mediterranean and Asian. I get all kinds of different
- 11:44Speaker 5: salads from Factor that I love quick easy. They can
- 11:47Speaker 5: be ready in two minutes. Head to Factor Meals dot com.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Slash foul fifty off and use code foul fifty o
- 11:55Speaker 5: FF to get fifty percent off and free daily greens
- 11:58Speaker 5: per box with new subscription only while supplies last until
- 12:01Speaker 5: nine twenty seven, twenty twenty six.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Is this a great game?
- 12:05Speaker 4: Or what?
- 12:05Speaker 1: Live at Ironhill Brewery in the East Market. Tim Kirkshon,
- 12:09Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame baseball writer and his lowly baseball fans,
- 12:13Speaker 1: the son Jeff Kirkshon. Dad, We're gonna get to your
- 12:16Speaker 1: team Tim surrounding the All Star Game. Right yesterday we
- 12:20Speaker 1: did the home run derby Team Tim, which was great.
- 12:22Speaker 1: If you missed it, make sure to go to our
- 12:24Speaker 1: previous live video and in fact, Dad, we just celebrated
- 12:26Speaker 1: a milestone on our YouTube page. Thank you for our
- 12:29Speaker 1: five thousand subscriber. If you're not subscribing, you're watching now
- 12:33Speaker 1: or you're watching it afterwards, hit that subscribe button comment
- 12:36Speaker 1: let us know what you think. You can also follow
- 12:38Speaker 1: on all the audio places anyplace you get your get
- 12:41Speaker 1: your podcast. We'd love to see so before we get
- 12:43Speaker 1: to the team tim All Star Game edition on the
- 12:45Speaker 1: State Baseball There a.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Million of them.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I'm going to really cut them down for time today.
- 12:50Speaker 3: On this date, in nineteen sixty seven, Eddie Matthews hit
- 12:53Speaker 3: home run number five hundred and the next year, nineteen
- 12:57Speaker 3: sixty eight, Aank Aaron hit home run number five. So
- 13:01Speaker 3: they did it on the exact same date, one year apart,
- 13:04Speaker 3: and they were two of the Well, there are two
- 13:07Speaker 3: of the two best hitters in the history of the Braves.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Eddie Matthews second greatest third base of all time behind
- 13:12Speaker 3: Mike Schmid for me, and of course hen Terre. On
- 13:15Speaker 3: this day in nineteen seventy famously was Pete Rose running
- 13:19Speaker 3: Ray Fosse over at home plate to win the All
- 13:23Speaker 3: Star Game back in it like that would never happen tonight.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Those things don't happen anymore. Pete Rose was roundly criticized
- 13:31Speaker 3: for doing what he did. Ray Fasson suffered a shoulder
- 13:34Speaker 3: injury that he really never got over.
- 13:36Speaker 4: But that's how Pete Rose.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Played the game, and they played to win the All
- 13:40Speaker 3: Star Game in nineteen seventy. So I'm never critical of
- 13:43Speaker 3: Pete Rose on that because there was a run to
- 13:46Speaker 3: be scored and he was going to score it. And
- 13:48Speaker 3: you have to love Pete Rose for that, even though
- 13:50Speaker 3: very unfortunate with Ray Foster. I was gonna say, we're
- 13:53Speaker 3: not surprised at all that Pete Rose would be running
- 13:55Speaker 3: like that even at an All Star right. And in
- 13:57Speaker 3: nineteen ninety three, on this date, Randy Johnson threw the
- 14:00Speaker 3: ball over John Cruk's head in the All Star Game.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And this is why the All Star Game is so beautiful.
- 14:06Speaker 3: It's not about winning and losing. It's about the confrontations
- 14:11Speaker 3: that we see. And here Kruky, you had never faced
- 14:14Speaker 3: Randy Johnson before, the most intimidating pitcher, certainly the most
- 14:17Speaker 3: intimidating left handed pitcher ever, and he intentionally threw it
- 14:21Speaker 3: over Kruky's head and he gave it the and then
- 14:24Speaker 3: Crukey swung it at strike three out there. It was
- 14:27Speaker 3: absolutely hilarious. That's what the All Star Game is about,
- 14:30Speaker 3: moments like that. I don't remember who won that All
- 14:33Speaker 3: Star Game because it's not important, but we remember Randy
- 14:36Speaker 3: Johnson air mailing it over Crucky's head. And last one
- 14:39Speaker 3: our only birthday for today, and it's a special one,
- 14:43Speaker 3: Carson Kelly for no nineteen ninety four. It's explaining one
- 14:47Speaker 3: more time for our new listeners. Who Carson Kelly is
- 14:50Speaker 3: your oldest grandson. Carson is mom your daughter Kelly.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Are so perfect? Right, Oh, it's so beautiful.
- 14:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 14:59Speaker 3: So we're gonna have h Zinski, I mean, just all star,
- 15:03Speaker 3: former player, great catcher, foul territory host.
- 15:07Speaker 4: We love him.
- 15:08Speaker 1: He's going to be joining us shortly, so stick around
- 15:10Speaker 1: for that. Make sure to match that subscribe button. But Dad,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you have a very special team Tim for us, and
- 15:16Speaker 1: I believe our friend Clint actually put together a cool
- 15:19Speaker 1: little graphic to see.
- 15:20Speaker 4: So why don't you kick us off?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Tell us first? This team Tim?
- 15:24Speaker 3: All right, Well, with these players, what's the relevant these
- 15:26Speaker 3: These are my all stars at each position from the
- 15:30Speaker 3: All Star Game. And they not necessarily the greatest players
- 15:34Speaker 3: at each position or did the greatest thing.
- 15:36Speaker 4: They were just memorable to me.
- 15:38Speaker 3: So we'll start with Sandy Alamar Junior behind the plate.
- 15:41Speaker 3: He won the MVP at home in nineteen ninety seven
- 15:44Speaker 3: in Cleveland to run Homer in the seventh and he
- 15:47Speaker 3: won that.
- 15:48Speaker 4: There's more significance to that.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Al Oliver is our first basement because he was in
- 15:54Speaker 3: the nineteen eighty two All Star Game in Montreal. He
- 15:57Speaker 3: had just been traded that spring to the Expos from
- 16:01Speaker 3: the Rangers, from the team that I covered, and Al's
- 16:04Speaker 3: one of the best hitters ever. So I see Al
- 16:06Speaker 3: at the All Star Game. Firstly, I say, is Al
- 16:08Speaker 3: how you doing? He goes at seventy five line drives
- 16:11Speaker 3: caught the first half se he was calling to them,
- 16:14Speaker 3: and I'm thinking, oh my god. So it was unforgettable
- 16:17Speaker 3: for me because it was my first All Star Game
- 16:20Speaker 3: as a full time beat writer, so that mattered.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Second basement is Roberto Alomar, who.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Won the MVP in nineteen ninety eight, a year after
- 16:30Speaker 3: his brother did so.
- 16:31Speaker 4: The Alamars won the MVP of the All Star Game
- 16:35Speaker 4: in back to back years. So yah.
- 16:38Speaker 3: The third basement is Jeff Sirillo, And I told this
- 16:40Speaker 3: story the other day. I'm going to tell you again.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Jeff Sorillo made the All Star Team for the first time.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He's on the plane going to the All Star Game
- 16:48Speaker 3: and a fan on the plane says, uh, aren't you
- 16:51Speaker 3: Jeff Soirillo. Jeff Sorella goes, yeah, he goes why, He goes,
- 16:54Speaker 3: aren't you going to the All Star Game? And Jeff
- 16:56Speaker 3: Sorello goes, yes, I'm going. He goes, isn't the All
- 16:58Speaker 3: Star Game in Cleveland. Jeff said yes, and he said, well,
- 17:01Speaker 3: this play is going to New York. So he was
- 17:04Speaker 3: on the wrong plane. And if it weren't for this fan,
- 17:07Speaker 3: he would have gone to the wrong vend And.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I mean it's worth noting I love this team, Tim
- 17:11Speaker 1: because it's not the all performance in an All Star Game.
- 17:16Speaker 4: These are memorable things for me, moments.
- 17:18Speaker 2: The Jeff Sorilla story is been of my all time favorite.
- 17:21Speaker 3: And in two thousand and one, of course, cal Ripken
- 17:23Speaker 3: is our shortstop. He started that game in Seattle, which
- 17:26Speaker 3: you went to at third base, and then Alex Rodriguez
- 17:30Speaker 3: moved him over to shortstop for the bottom of the
- 17:32Speaker 3: first inning, just for the top of the first inning,
- 17:35Speaker 3: just as a tribute that this guy was our shortstop
- 17:38Speaker 3: all those years and taught the rest of us how
- 17:41Speaker 3: to play shortstop.
- 17:41Speaker 4: I love that thing.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Okay, I'll feel real quick, might trout twenty sixteen.
- 17:46Speaker 4: There's a long story here. I'm going to make it quick.
- 17:48Speaker 3: So I meet pit Bull on the field in the
- 17:51Speaker 3: twenty sixteen All Star Game, and I have.
- 17:54Speaker 4: No idea who Pitbull is.
- 17:56Speaker 3: But he comes up to me, he gives me this
- 17:58Speaker 3: complicated handshake and says that I don't think.
- 18:01Speaker 2: It was a complicated handshake. I don't think it was
- 18:03Speaker 2: just a tradition.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Would buff it would just you go like.
- 18:07Speaker 2: This close it, come to the fingers, take a thumb.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Mart I didn't know who he was. He was giving
- 18:14Speaker 4: you a secret, thank god handshake.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Thank God he didn't ask me, hey's what's my favorite
- 18:20Speaker 3: song of yourance, because the answer would be I have no.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Idea who you are.
- 18:23Speaker 3: But the point of this is this goes out on Twitter,
- 18:26Speaker 3: and the next day Mike Trout, the best player in
- 18:29Speaker 3: the game, comes up to me and goes, oh my god,
- 18:32Speaker 3: you met Pittfull.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Tell me about it. What was he like? Was he
- 18:35Speaker 4: bigger you thought was held?
- 18:36Speaker 3: He was fascinated that I had met that I had
- 18:40Speaker 3: met pit Bull.
- 18:41Speaker 2: That's what he wanted to talk.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yes, So you in your conversation with Mike Trout have
- 18:44Speaker 1: talked about Pokemon and Pitbull.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Right, amazing?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Right?
- 18:48Speaker 4: Okay a few more.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Nineteen eighty nine, Bo Jackson let off the game with
- 18:52Speaker 3: a home run against Rick Russell into those green seats
- 18:55Speaker 3: at Anaheim Stadium, and this is bo in his prime, breathtaking,
- 18:59Speaker 3: nobody quite like him.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Two thousand and seven, each Row hit an inside.
- 19:03Speaker 3: The park home run in San Francisco, the only inside
- 19:06Speaker 3: the park home run in the history of the All
- 19:09Speaker 3: Star Game. And each Row never hit one during the
- 19:12Speaker 3: regular season, but he hit one in the All Star
- 19:15Speaker 3: which is always amazing. I nineteen ninety nine Pedro in Boston.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Pedro Martinez is my starting pitcher. He faced six nationally hitter,
- 19:25Speaker 3: struck out five of them in the most dominant performance
- 19:27Speaker 3: I've ever seen. And before the game, they had a
- 19:31Speaker 3: tribute at Penway to Ted Williams, and it was like
- 19:34Speaker 3: the coolest thing ever. All the players just gathered around
- 19:37Speaker 3: in and paid tribute to him. And after Pedro's two innings,
- 19:42Speaker 3: he went into the clubhous and Ted Williams was in
- 19:45Speaker 3: the allnin and he says to Pedro Martinez, that's some
- 19:48Speaker 3: of the greatest pitching I've ever seen. And Pedro still
- 19:51Speaker 3: calls that the highlight of his career. That the first
- 19:55Speaker 3: or second greatest hitter of all time told him that,
- 19:58Speaker 3: and two Red Sox legends, I mean, how special is
- 20:01Speaker 3: that really? Relationship in that mold and our reliever of course,
- 20:04Speaker 3: is Mariano rivererro whose final All Star Game was in
- 20:07Speaker 3: Detroit a bunch of years ago, and they sent him
- 20:10Speaker 3: out there to the mound and nobody else went on
- 20:13Speaker 3: the field. There were no other defensive players, so he
- 20:16Speaker 3: could have his own time on the mound. He pitched
- 20:19Speaker 3: the eighth inning. They took him out. When he came
- 20:22Speaker 3: into the dugout I'm the dugout reporter. He is literally
- 20:25Speaker 3: in tears, and so every guy the team hugged him.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It was absolutely amazing. And the last one is Kyle
- 20:31Speaker 3: Schwarber last year as our designated hitter. I'm not sure
- 20:35Speaker 3: if that's what he was, but he had the swing
- 20:37Speaker 3: off last year to win the All Star Game. Three pitches,
- 20:40Speaker 3: three swings, three homers. Absolutely great. That is the team
- 20:44Speaker 3: tim from the All Star Game.
- 20:46Speaker 1: All right, Well, we have a very special guest joining
- 20:48Speaker 1: us coming up next, so we're actually gonna throw it

- 22:04Speaker 1: Jeff Kirkshin and that's a J.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Prasinski.
- 22:07Speaker 2: It's rare that you have a guest.
- 22:08Speaker 1: That does a commercial read for you and then you
- 22:10Speaker 1: introduce a guess obviously all star catcher, but foul Territory
- 22:16Speaker 1: hosts as well.
- 22:17Speaker 4: AJ.
- 22:17Speaker 2: First of all, we love being a part of the
- 22:19Speaker 2: foul Territory Network.
- 22:20Speaker 4: We feel like family. So it's about time we had
- 22:22Speaker 4: you on the Yes. Yes, you guys have been doing
- 22:23Speaker 4: a great job.
- 22:24Speaker 8: You guys have been crushing in and you know, your
- 22:26Speaker 8: dad is always great with the stories. These writer guys, like,
- 22:29Speaker 8: they're so good with their words, even when they're not writing, when.
- 22:33Speaker 4: They speak, they're so good.
- 22:34Speaker 8: And it's so fun to listen to him tell the
- 22:36Speaker 8: stories of things he's seen, things he wants to see.
- 22:39Speaker 4: It's just it's awesome.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Well, Dad always says these former players, they're so good
- 22:43Speaker 2: with a baseball.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Pat I don't know how do it, you know? And
- 22:47Speaker 4: AJ so good behind the plate all those years. What
- 22:49Speaker 4: did you think of the home run derby last night?
- 22:51Speaker 4: It was great, right.
- 22:52Speaker 8: I actually I was pleasantly surprised the ending. You couldn't
- 22:57Speaker 8: have asked for a better ending. Now people in Philly
- 22:59Speaker 8: are going to say, man, we wanted schwarbur to win.
- 23:01Speaker 8: But the drama and every round was pretty close, fairly
- 23:06Speaker 8: close once, you know, I wonder and so, And for me,
- 23:11Speaker 8: my favorite part was Wilson and Taris and Philly's getting
- 23:14Speaker 8: booed and He's come on, and then Jordan Walker knew
- 23:16Speaker 8: it was coming and he handled it perfectly. So I
- 23:20Speaker 8: thought it was a tremendous event. I thought they did
- 23:22Speaker 8: a great job. It was pack.
- 23:24Speaker 4: I was on the field before the game.
- 23:25Speaker 8: I left, you know, an hour or so before because
- 23:28Speaker 8: I just was like, I gotta get out of here.
- 23:29Speaker 8: I'll watch it on TV. But I thought they did
- 23:32Speaker 8: an amazing job. I love the new format. It's so
- 23:34Speaker 8: much better. It keeps people engaged. It's not hurry airry
- 23:37Speaker 8: Harry swing, swing saying. And it didn't last. I was
- 23:40Speaker 8: waiting for the old four hour, five hour slog they
- 23:42Speaker 8: used to have. It was two and a half hours
- 23:44Speaker 8: and done.
- 23:44Speaker 4: It was perfect. It really worked. Have you ever been
- 23:47Speaker 4: in an home run dery myor leagues college. I've been
- 23:50Speaker 4: in two. How did you do?
- 23:53Speaker 8: I won one and I finished second. It was it
- 23:56Speaker 8: the Hall of Fame game. They used to have the
- 23:57Speaker 8: Hall of Fame game in Coopersound and I hadn't played
- 24:01Speaker 8: for a couple years.
- 24:02Speaker 4: And I hadn't touched a bat for a couple of years, right.
- 24:04Speaker 8: And they invite me to go up there and play,
- 24:07Speaker 8: and you know, they have a guy from each team.
- 24:09Speaker 8: So I'm in my white Sox gear. And then and
- 24:12Speaker 8: I think Roley Fingers was our manager, he said, hey,
- 24:14Speaker 8: we don't have another catcher. Can you catch the whole
- 24:17Speaker 8: seven egs. I'm like, yeah, no problem, Like, I'll catch
- 24:20Speaker 8: nine if you want me to.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I don't care.
- 24:21Speaker 8: He's like really, He's like most catchers make it like
- 24:23Speaker 8: two innings. I'm like, oh, I you know, mister Fingers,
- 24:26Speaker 8: I'll be fine. So then they come up to me
- 24:28Speaker 8: right before and they say, hey, we do a.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Home run derby? Will you do the home run derby?
- 24:31Speaker 4: And I was like I don't really want to, and
- 24:33Speaker 4: they're like, no, no, no, we want you to. And I
- 24:35Speaker 4: was like, sure, well not. Keep in mind, I hadn't.
- 24:37Speaker 8: Touched the bat for like three years this far, and
- 24:40Speaker 8: so they have they throw VP, and I'm and I'm
- 24:44Speaker 8: hitting balls.
- 24:45Speaker 4: I hit left handed, so I'm hitting balls like the
- 24:47Speaker 4: third base right, like the foul balls.
- 24:52Speaker 8: And my daughter comes up to me and a time,
- 24:55Speaker 8: she was probably ten or eleven, twelve ish, she says, Dad,
- 25:01Speaker 8: you're really going to do the home runner. I said, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 8: what she said, You're going to embarrass yourself and us
- 25:07Speaker 8: with your batting practice.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Please don't.
- 25:09Speaker 8: And I honestly I looked at her and I said, Eva,
- 25:12Speaker 8: I love you. When the lights come on, I'll be
- 25:16Speaker 8: just fine. Watch that right soon.
- 25:18Speaker 4: And then I went and won.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and who remember who you beat or who out competition?
- 25:26Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 25:27Speaker 8: I know I lost the next year to uh Sweeney
- 25:30Speaker 8: Ryan Sweeney, he's a former teammate of mine. I lost
- 25:32Speaker 8: in the finals state right next year, and I went
- 25:34Speaker 8: a whole year without touching a pad until I went
- 25:36Speaker 8: back the next year.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I don't know who was Did you hit a bunch
- 25:41Speaker 4: of homers? Yeah? It was fun. First time in three years.
- 25:45Speaker 4: It's pretty hard to do. It was fun.
- 25:47Speaker 8: It was fun, but I mean it was nowhere near
- 25:49Speaker 8: the MLB. I mean, there's you know, five thousand people
- 25:52Speaker 8: at this double ed a field and coups a little
- 25:55Speaker 8: different than Citizens Bank was last cheering or booing you.
- 25:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 3: So when you got your first All Star nine and
- 26:03Speaker 3: what was that experience like for you seeing players? Was
- 26:08Speaker 3: there one guy you saw in the clubhouse You're like,
- 26:10Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I'm like kind of an equal for
- 26:12Speaker 3: a day with you. So my first All Star game
- 26:15Speaker 3: was the Milwaukee tie game.
- 26:16Speaker 8: Yes, so what a great one to start. And I
- 26:22Speaker 8: made it with Tory Hunter and Eddie Gardotta from the Twins.
- 26:25Speaker 8: All of us were first timers, so we were all
- 26:27Speaker 8: just giddy to be there. You walk into the clubhouse,
- 26:30Speaker 8: you have Jeter and Mariano and Hey Rod and just
- 26:35Speaker 8: who's who of everyone?
- 26:36Speaker 4: To you?
- 26:38Speaker 8: So you walk in, it's Joe Torrey was the manager,
- 26:41Speaker 8: Don Zimmer. Those are the guys You're like, oh my gosh,
- 26:43Speaker 8: it's Joe Tory. There's one how many World Series and
- 26:46Speaker 8: gets those of the World Series at that time every
- 26:48Speaker 8: single years?
- 26:49Speaker 4: That was what was crazy. And they were so nice
- 26:51Speaker 4: and so great.
- 26:52Speaker 8: The Holy Yankee staff we think Lily Randolph was on
- 26:55Speaker 8: that staff and they were so awesome.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Just hey, we're so happy you're here. We love the
- 26:59Speaker 4: first timers.
- 27:00Speaker 8: Laid out Pasada's gonna start and you're gonna catch the
- 27:02Speaker 8: last Well they said for four innings or whatever, but
- 27:06Speaker 8: we ended up going twelve innings, so I ended up
- 27:07Speaker 8: catching seven innings, and uh have the ball. I still
- 27:10Speaker 8: have the last alcohol because last au was Freddy Garcia.
- 27:13Speaker 8: He struck out. He struck out, but I have the
- 27:15Speaker 8: ball from a tie from the tie game. And then
- 27:18Speaker 8: and then I went in.
- 27:19Speaker 4: So they were all it was like bad news bears
- 27:20Speaker 4: that were let them play the chance and all that.
- 27:22Speaker 4: So I go in to uh Joe Torre.
- 27:26Speaker 8: I'm like, what are we gonna do? And he's like, well,
- 27:27Speaker 8: we don't have any pitching. I'm like, oh, pitch and
- 27:30Speaker 8: he said, well, who's gonna catch him? Like I don't know,
- 27:32Speaker 8: I go, They're not gonna catch a lot. They're probably
- 27:33Speaker 8: everything I throw is probably gonna.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Get hit, but you don't catch.
- 27:36Speaker 8: I'm like, oh bitch, and I go, I'll happily go
- 27:38Speaker 8: out there and give up a home run to lose.
- 27:40Speaker 4: I don't care.
- 27:41Speaker 8: And then of course it ended up being a tie
- 27:43Speaker 8: and all of the bacle and then they became oh
- 27:45Speaker 8: this game matters, so it was it was a pretty cool,
- 27:48Speaker 8: uh pretty main that was the game Tory Hunter Robberry.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Bonds and uh where he jumped over the fence.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I was at that game and I was a kid,
- 27:55Speaker 3: and I'll never forget because when he caught that ball.
- 27:58Speaker 3: If you remember on the outfield, I bring the same
- 28:02Speaker 3: It's like you took a picture of that catch, Exac,
- 28:04Speaker 3: and I have that imprinted in my mind. Anytime we
- 28:07Speaker 3: asked any player or any fan of the game, you
- 28:09Speaker 3: know what was the moment you remember.
- 28:11Speaker 2: I'll never forget that image of Tory Hunter.
- 28:14Speaker 4: That was the moment for me where I was like,
- 28:15Speaker 4: this game is great.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And when Barry went out to the outfield that he
- 28:19Speaker 3: picked up like a rag by the way.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Put him over his head like he was me. He's big.
- 28:24Speaker 8: Toy's a big guy too, Barry, just like And then
- 28:27Speaker 8: when when we went to Japan that offseason MLBS they
- 28:31Speaker 8: still do it. They did like an MLB tour where
- 28:33Speaker 8: you go and play the Japanese All Stars, and Barry
- 28:35Speaker 8: was on that, Torri was on and I was on it.
- 28:37Speaker 4: So they got I got to hear all the stories.
- 28:38Speaker 4: It was great good. So we were just talking about
- 28:41Speaker 4: bo Jaxon's home run in the eighty nine All Star game,
- 28:44Speaker 4: and John Smoltz told me a story last night about
- 28:47Speaker 4: that All Star Game. So Schmoltz and I have both
- 28:50Speaker 4: worked for Fox.
- 28:50Speaker 8: So we go to dinner last night with some of
- 28:52Speaker 8: the Fox people and I asked Foltz, what was your
- 28:55Speaker 8: first All Star Game? Because I didn't honestly, I didn't know.
- 28:57Speaker 8: I grew up with Braves fans, so I knew Smoltz
- 28:59Speaker 8: was there. He's like eighty. I said, where where? It's Anaheim?
- 29:02Speaker 8: He said, Tommy Laswarda was the manager. I'm like, rookie,
- 29:06Speaker 8: I don't.
- 29:06Speaker 4: He's like, I'm not going to pitch. He's like, there's
- 29:08Speaker 4: no way.
- 29:08Speaker 8: I had all these guys and Tommy And when he
- 29:11Speaker 8: does his pitching meeting, goes Smolts, you're gonna be after
- 29:13Speaker 8: Rick Russell.
- 29:14Speaker 4: He's like, you're going to be second.
- 29:15Speaker 8: Smoltz was like okay, and back then this is when
- 29:17Speaker 8: the guys through like three innings, so he was like, ah,
- 29:20Speaker 8: I got plenty of time.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Well, he said he had never been to Anaheim.
- 29:22Speaker 8: He had never been in American League Park because he
- 29:24Speaker 8: was there was no Inner League right.
- 29:26Speaker 4: So he said, it's the first inning. He's just sitting on.
- 29:28Speaker 8: The bench looking around and Russell goes like Homer, Homer,
- 29:31Speaker 8: double Homer, and Lasorda gets on the bullpend phone and says,
- 29:35Speaker 8: get Smoltz up. He's got to get in. And they're like,
- 29:38Speaker 8: he's not down here. And John's like, Tommy right here
- 29:43Speaker 8: and there, and he said. Tommy goes, what are you doing?
- 29:46Speaker 8: He says, I don't know how to get to the bullpen.
- 29:49Speaker 8: I've never been here. I don't know anything. And Tommy goes, well,
- 29:51Speaker 8: how long will it take it. He's like, well, by
- 29:53Speaker 8: the time I run out there, He's like, uh, seven
- 29:57Speaker 8: to ten pitches. He's like, all right, we go out there,
- 29:59Speaker 8: and he jogged out there and through he said he
- 30:01Speaker 8: threw like seven ten pitches. And he think he said
- 30:03Speaker 8: he threw three innings.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Second seven pitches and now he hit his first off.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Yeah he threw I think he said he threw three innings.
- 30:10Speaker 4: I'm over here.
- 30:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 8: Literally, Tommy's on the bullpen phone and he smolteers gets
- 30:14Speaker 8: Smoltzo and smolts as like, uh hey, guys right.
- 30:18Speaker 4: I was like, that's amazing. So he did.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Barry Bonds and names come up twice today and he's
- 30:24Speaker 3: the greatest hitter I've ever seen. Let's forget about everything
- 30:26Speaker 3: else for a minute. I asked everyone I did a
- 30:29Speaker 3: story on give me the one thing in baseball that
- 30:31Speaker 3: has just amazed you. And you said, playing with Barry.
- 30:36Speaker 3: So tell us about that first series in Houston.
- 30:39Speaker 4: I believe what Barry did.
- 30:41Speaker 8: So we opened on the road there, we had three
- 30:44Speaker 8: in Houston, three and Sandy we opened Peco. We were
- 30:47Speaker 8: the first three games in Peco. So Barry was at
- 30:50Speaker 8: six fifty eight home runs, so he was two behind Willie.
- 30:53Speaker 8: And he hits a home run that night of Royo's Wall.
- 30:55Speaker 8: And this is what Royal Wall was. Dude, Like, dude,
- 30:59Speaker 8: we faced Oswall, Pett Clemmens in that series. Yeah, so
- 31:02Speaker 8: it was Walt and he hits like a home run
- 31:04Speaker 8: in the eighth inning to win the game. Why was
- 31:07Speaker 8: well pitched him? I have no idea of challenge what
- 31:08Speaker 8: roy was not afraid whack homer? Right, we win the
- 31:11Speaker 8: game three to one or whatever it was. Barry comes
- 31:15Speaker 8: in the clubhouse after I'll never forget this and says, okay, guys,
- 31:18Speaker 8: I have six fifty nine. I'm not going to hit
- 31:20Speaker 8: a home run until we get back home. I want
- 31:23Speaker 8: to tie Willie at home in San Francisco. I'm the
- 31:25Speaker 8: home opener, and what is this guy talking about?
- 31:29Speaker 6: Now?
- 31:29Speaker 4: JT Snow looks at me, he goes, just watch what happens.
- 31:33Speaker 8: I was like, okay, And he got some hits and
- 31:35Speaker 8: he is a couple of balls hard and you know
- 31:36Speaker 8: they didn't get.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Pitched the gall and even no bays, you know, doing
- 31:39Speaker 4: this thing. Whatever.
- 31:41Speaker 8: We get home so that we play the five games,
- 31:43Speaker 8: he doesn't hit a home run. We get back to
- 31:44Speaker 8: San Francisco and he goes, Okay, today's the day I
- 31:46Speaker 8: ty Willie burst of Bata. I'm like, there's no way.
- 31:51Speaker 8: And then the next day he goes, today's the day
- 31:53Speaker 8: he because he's like, I don't want to I don't
- 31:54Speaker 8: want to tie Willie and pass him on the same day.
- 31:57Speaker 8: So then he says okay. Then he comes back next
- 31:58Speaker 8: to go, is today's day I wack home run? This
- 32:02Speaker 8: guy's not playing the same game.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I was gonna like, you're a longtime major league player,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and to think, what am I missing here?
- 32:08Speaker 4: Is this? He was not playing the same He was
- 32:10Speaker 4: not playing this.
- 32:11Speaker 8: I tell people this, and again, whatever off the field,
- 32:14Speaker 8: whatever he did, none of my business.
- 32:16Speaker 4: I don't care. I know this.
- 32:17Speaker 8: There was a lot of other people doing a lot
- 32:19Speaker 8: of stuff too, and they weren't near as good as
- 32:20Speaker 8: Barry Bonds was. I played against the greatest hitters of
- 32:24Speaker 8: whatever my generation was Jeter Pooholes, Miguel Cabret won a
- 32:28Speaker 8: triple crown. I was in the division, played him nineteen
- 32:30Speaker 8: times a year. Right, Barry Bonds was so much better
- 32:34Speaker 8: because he got one pitch a game and.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Would not mean it was he would get one. We
- 32:39Speaker 4: plent to Colorado early in the year. Clint Hurtle was
- 32:41Speaker 4: the manager.
- 32:41Speaker 8: They pitched the Berry and the like the eighth inning,
- 32:44Speaker 8: and he hit a ball that they had that big
- 32:45Speaker 8: ray foot wall. I swear the ball moved back like
- 32:47Speaker 8: three feet and we end up winning the game off
- 32:49Speaker 8: that hit. The rest of the year, Clint Hurtle, as
- 32:51Speaker 8: soon as Berry, it was like auto.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Put him on auto. I mean it was he didn't
- 32:55Speaker 4: get a pitch at all, like the whole year. Ay
- 32:58Speaker 4: May that was the year I leave that he was
- 33:01Speaker 4: walked intentionally with nobody on base nine times. You know what,
- 33:06Speaker 4: nine times?
- 33:06Speaker 8: You know who was hitting behind him? Yeah, into four
- 33:09Speaker 8: hundred double plays that year me because Barry wouldn't steal,
- 33:14Speaker 8: and Barry went Barry Dempster wasn't taking the guy out
- 33:16Speaker 8: a second, and I can't run, so if I hit
- 33:19Speaker 8: a ground balls.
- 33:20Speaker 4: There's another one chog it up.
- 33:22Speaker 8: And you can't do anything right because the fans expect
- 33:25Speaker 8: you to get a hit when they walk.
- 33:26Speaker 4: But it's not that Barry Bond, it's not that easy.
- 33:30Speaker 3: That he was the hardest thing in the world to
- 33:32Speaker 3: do and he just does things on command. So you
- 33:35Speaker 3: were at the home run derby before the derby yesterday,
- 33:39Speaker 3: is there anybody you talked to, any stories you got
- 33:41Speaker 3: from any of the players or any of the you know,
- 33:43Speaker 3: former players that you know stuck out to you.
- 33:47Speaker 8: It was pretty calm, and it's just you know, when
- 33:50Speaker 8: you're on the field before, there's so many people and
- 33:53Speaker 8: it's so hard to get to really talk to anybody
- 33:55Speaker 8: for more than a split second. Right, it's like bloom
- 33:59Speaker 8: boom boom, because you walk two feet and there's someone
- 34:01Speaker 8: else you have to say hi to, and then they
- 34:03Speaker 8: come up and so you're just like just that, I mean,
- 34:06Speaker 8: you know, it's just nice to see that all the people,
- 34:10Speaker 8: all the all the old players that were around.
- 34:13Speaker 3: I get all the correct players just kick the griffyw
- 34:15Speaker 3: on three home run titles. He's run around with this
- 34:19Speaker 3: camera taking picture and glad handing everyone.
- 34:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I think it's just so encouraging and so refreshing that
- 34:26Speaker 3: the greatest home run hitter in the Home Run Derby
- 34:29Speaker 3: is there every year.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:30Speaker 8: When he works for HIMMB obviously and he does his
- 34:32Speaker 8: photography thing. People love that guy, man, I will. I
- 34:37Speaker 8: got the chance to play with him for a while too.
- 34:40Speaker 8: People love people my age and around. I'm almost fifty,
- 34:45Speaker 8: you know, sixty to forty is age. He was the
- 34:49Speaker 8: superhero if you were into baseball. He was the most talented.
- 34:52Speaker 8: He was the kid, and he had his hat backwards
- 34:54Speaker 8: and he was smiling. He was and then I've got
- 34:57Speaker 8: to play with him. I got to know him before
- 34:59Speaker 8: I got to play with him because he's in Orlando
- 35:00Speaker 8: where I live, so I knew him.
- 35:03Speaker 4: Tell a quick story about Griffy. After I play with him.
- 35:06Speaker 8: Two thousand and eight, he comes over the White Sox
- 35:08Speaker 8: and I go, I had to go back home where
- 35:11Speaker 8: I'm from, up New York, and I'm with my my cousins.
- 35:14Speaker 8: We're out where I'm from, Prince Champion, so we you know,
- 35:18Speaker 8: we're at s were in sag Harbor and right at
- 35:20Speaker 8: this little bar. My cousin's like, dude, you got to
- 35:22Speaker 8: play with Ken Griffy Junior. He's like, that's the coolest
- 35:24Speaker 8: thing ever. I'm like, you want to call him? Obviously
- 35:26Speaker 8: I had a couple of drinks. Well, if you want
- 35:27Speaker 8: to talk to him. He's like, what do you mean.
- 35:29Speaker 8: I'm like, so I picked up my phone. I'm like,
- 35:30Speaker 8: I call griff and he answers, which I didn't think
- 35:32Speaker 8: he could answer. He's like, what's up and I'm like, oh, no,
- 35:35Speaker 8: hell nothing. I just wanted to see what you're up
- 35:38Speaker 8: to when you know you're in Orlando.
- 35:40Speaker 4: I go by the way. My cousin wants to say
- 35:41Speaker 4: something here, he's like.
- 35:45Speaker 8: And then I was like, okay, yeah, he can't talk
- 35:46Speaker 8: right now, but yea, I'll see when I get back.
- 35:48Speaker 8: And I'm like, hang up, and my cousin just looks
- 35:50Speaker 8: at me and goes, dude, you just called Ken Griffy Junior.
- 35:52Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen.
- 35:57Speaker 4: It was so funny.
- 35:58Speaker 3: That is so that's a little better than when Ken
- 36:00Speaker 3: Griffy called you.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Long story. Ken Griffy Junior finally called me back on
- 36:05Speaker 4: the story. I was right about Willy Mays, and it's
- 36:07Speaker 4: been two weeks and I can't find him. He calls
- 36:09Speaker 4: me back.
- 36:10Speaker 3: My daughter is in the backseat of the car at
- 36:13Speaker 3: a shopping mall breastfeeding her son, and I'm the driver,
- 36:18Speaker 3: so I have to I have to stop the car
- 36:20Speaker 3: while she rest fees while Ken Griffy Junior calls me
- 36:23Speaker 3: the A. C. Gillins and nobody will for my story
- 36:26Speaker 3: about Willy Mays. These things can only have.
- 36:28Speaker 4: It All Star Game is the greatest thing ever.
