Transcript
- 0:00Bonus time every year at the USTFCCCA convention down in
- 0:05December, we do a live podcast event where we sit down with
- 0:08coaches from around the country for 5:00-ish minutes and talk
- 0:11about a certain topic. This year, December of 2024, we
- 0:15sat down with coaches to talk about the NCAA.
- 0:18What's going on with the NIL transfer portal?
- 0:20Roster caps all. Those kind of good things, and
- 0:22there's some interesting feedback and tidbits from
- 0:25everyone who chose to sat down with us.
- 0:27So here we are, the audio version of that.
- 0:29You can catch the video version over on.
- 0:31YouTube. Just search up the GAL Athletics
- 0:33podcast and look for our live events content and you'll find
- 0:36the three that we've done 20/24/2023 2020 2 and we'll do
- 0:40it again in 2025 because. He's going to want to feed me
- 0:44and so and I want to be fed so, so hey, so guys, he'll be the
- 0:48next one and then we're done. OK.
- 0:51All right. Going against a hungry Mike so I
- 0:55I got to make sure I keep this. That sounds like a a YouTube
- 0:58show, the hungry Mike's. I just appreciate him not
- 1:01calling me hungry. Hungry hippo.
- 1:02That's always that's always nice of him not to to call me that.
- 1:05Start out by introducing yourself, Sir, and you know the
- 1:06rules. And you're a little bit more
- 1:08experienced than some of us Mic up to the mouth so everybody
- 1:10can. Oh yeah.
- 1:10You got to eat the mic. If I get sick afterwards, I'll
- 1:13blame you, but. Just ignore those those ones.
- 1:16Greg Schmidt, head, cross country, track and field cause,
- 1:18University of Bridgeport men and women.
- 1:20And a Gill Connections podcast alum do you got to play you're
- 1:24listening to right now? So I don't need to really plug
- 1:26it, but go check out the library amazing coaches that we've had
- 1:30as we're getting closer and closer to 300 man, it really
- 1:32kind of boggles my mind that we're getting near 300.
- 1:36All right, so you know the. Topic.
- 1:38Of the day we are talking about the NCAA and all the changes in
- 1:42IL roster caps. I mean, just there.
- 1:46There's just so there's so many avenues to go down to it.
- 1:48What's your thoughts, feelings, actions on all this change?
- 1:51Well, well, the more that we allow negative things to be
- 1:56allowed through the NCAA, you know, it's kind of started with
- 1:58the NIL. Oh, I'm in the way.
- 2:01You, you bump stuff, that's all. Oh, I did that last time too.
- 2:04I think you did. Don't you need your parents to
- 2:05teach you not to put elbows on the table?
- 2:07Well, I'm, I'm old, I need to rest.
- 2:10But the, the more that negative decisions are made, it's, it's
- 2:14just going to make it easier for things to kind of snowball out
- 2:17of control in my opinion. Now, especially track and field,
- 2:20but pretty much most Olympic sports, we're in a tunnel on the
- 2:25train tracks and we're like, hey, look at that pretty light
- 2:27coming towards us, not really seeing what's happening to us
- 2:31and so. You think we're a little blind
- 2:33to some of this? I think we're blind to some of
- 2:35this and you know, talk with a lot of the coaches, which I've
- 2:38been doing all week long, all week long.
- 2:40It's been 2 days. But when I hear, oh, well, no,
- 2:44this is just going to affect a few programs.
- 2:47This is just going to affect, no, it's going to be, I don't
- 2:49even want to say a trickle down effect.
- 2:51It's it's going to be a direct. Effect.
- 2:53To so many programs you know the the haves are going to get
- 2:58stronger, the have nots are going to get weaker.
- 3:01This started with nil. Someone earlier said Grand
- 3:04Canyon between the haves and have nots.
- 3:06Yes, and you know, being a Division 2 coach, the the D ones
- 3:11that you know, you have to have those roster limits now, first
- 3:14of all, they're going to struggle, but those athletes,
- 3:16they're not going to go to every single D2 and D3.
- 3:19They're going to go to ones that already have the resources.
- 3:21So the the D twos that are just trying to get by, they're not
- 3:24going to get those kids. So the D.
- 3:26Who's that are? Higher are going to get stronger
- 3:28as a result. You're think I'm thinking it's
- 3:31going to, you know, naively thinking it's going to trickle
- 3:34equally amongst D2D3. It's a you're saying that
- 3:37whatever chasm because, you know, in between all divisions
- 3:40there are haves and haves, nots, whether it's budget easy to get
- 3:44in at school versus, you know, harder schools, things like
- 3:46that. You're saying that even amongst
- 3:49those, and you're right. I wish there was a better word
- 3:50for than trickle right trickling are going to help the people
- 3:54that are already good. Oh yeah, has them in that world
- 3:57as well. Well.
- 3:57There's, there's a, there's a naivete that all division twos
- 4:00are equal, that you're allowed to have that amount of
- 4:02scholarships and you have that amount of facilities and
- 4:05funding, right. And a lot of schools don't, you
- 4:07know, they're, they're trying to deal with enrollment.
- 4:09And you know, me, I don't mince words.
- 4:11I mean, I think the worst thing that happened not just to
- 4:14college athletics, but higher education was letting you know,
- 4:17for lack of a better term, nitwit knucklehead businessmen
- 4:21to kind of take over and educators actually stepping out
- 4:24of the role. So when you think about the
- 4:26bottom line, which is what they're doing, they they don't
- 4:29really care about your athletic programs getting.
- 4:31Stronger. Yeah.
- 4:31You take out Little Joey and Little Jane and replace it by
- 4:34dollar signs only. Exactly.
- 4:35And it's and it's more about the bottom line of everything when.
- 4:38Yeah, how many people got into education and coaches for the
- 4:40dollar signs? They got into it for the Jane's
- 4:41and Joeys. Right.
- 4:42And the professors, the professors as well as the
- 4:45coaches, they, they want to be part of education because
- 4:48coaching is a form of education as much people don't really
- 4:51recognize that it really should be.
- 4:52And you know, I, I get frustrated with my fellow
- 4:55coaches, which I love what you do because you highlight the
- 4:57coaches here. But when, you know, I hear
- 5:00things like, well, I don't want anybody on my team that's not
- 5:02faster than 21, seven or whatever the case might be.
- 5:06OK, well, are you coaching at that point or are you just
- 5:09trying to get the best athletes possible in order to do that?
- 5:11There's not a lot of education going on.
- 5:12Yeah, I don't know that you're necessarily going to this Ave.,
- 5:15but it's an Ave. that I always fight back against is that
- 5:19they're not developing just 'cause they get fast kits.
- 5:21Oh no, I don't think I. Don't think you're really I.
- 5:23Don't think that I I I just think at that.
- 5:25Point I see what you're saying about roster management versus,
- 5:29you know, we like to define development as oh, I took a a 10
- 5:33minute 2 Miller high school boy and now they run 8 flat or
- 5:36whatever in the 3K whatever. But you know a kid who runs 8
- 5:40flat in the two mile out of high school.
- 5:41That would never happen, right? Actually, never say never,
- 5:43never. You guys are coaching these
- 5:45days. But taking that kid from I
- 5:48should have stuck. I usually do this analogy with
- 5:49100 meter dash. I should have stuck with air.
- 5:51But you take a kid who's running 8:30 in the two mile out of high
- 5:54school and they and you make them, you need them to run 820.
- 5:58That is still development and still as hard.
- 5:59By the way, I'm not comparing one's harder than the other.
- 6:01That's still hard And and and I say.
- 6:03This all the time. There's a diminishing return as
- 6:05you get better. So if you're a thrower going
- 6:08from a 40 foot high school shot putter to a 45, sometimes it's a
- 6:12little bit, most times it's a little bit easier than taking a
- 6:14guy that's 60 foot turned into a 62.
- 6:16Footer would you want the job Speaking of shot put, of trying
- 6:19to take what what's Ryan Krauser's PR 74 feet something
- 6:2276 yeah yeah would you like to be the one who's responsible for
- 6:26taking him from 76 to 76 foot too?
- 6:28Exactly yeah. Hard every quarter of it's.
- 6:30Developed, yes. Every quarter of an inch is a
- 6:33struggle. At that point.
- 6:34It's just like a sprinter taking a guy who's just developing from
- 6:3724 down to like A229, yeah, a little bit easier task than
- 6:41going from a 20.1. I don't know, easier.
- 6:44I, I, I, I stay away from those words.
- 6:46Well, it's the diminishing. Both is hard.
- 6:47Both are hard. Both are hard.
- 6:49And, and really the truth of it is both are developing and
- 6:52that's the real real. Truth, right?
- 6:54And I, I just think we've, we've gotten away from the coaching
- 6:58being in a form of education. And I agree with that thinking a
- 7:00lot of that. I appreciate you bringing that
- 7:03up because you can easily replace that your coach with
- 7:06teacher. Absolutely.
- 7:07Oh yeah, and by the way, your English teacher is a coach too.
- 7:09Just he or she's teaching, coaching Shakespeare or whatever
- 7:13grammatical. And, and for me, that's, that's
- 7:15what the disappointing thing is, like I said, in higher education
- 7:18as a whole, it's, it's moved away from education and it's
- 7:22more of a business now. And you know, I'm not that old.
- 7:25I've teach. For 20 years, Is it too late to
- 7:27turn back? Because no.
- 7:29I think, I think the fact that there there is such a removal of
- 7:34a lot of universities that universities are going to have
- 7:36to focus more on what is the best thing for us.
- 7:39It's going to be promoting our education and promoting our
- 7:42academic programs. And then the athletes that come
- 7:45in specifically for that is what's going to help it out.
- 7:48Yeah, in my opinion, all. Right, prediction time.
- 7:51So we're going to be able to check this in a year from now.
- 7:54What's a prediction you have? Could be your program, could be
- 7:57elite, could be high school, just something in track and
- 7:59field. What's a a prediction?
- 8:01I I think. That there's going to be a lot
- 8:02of jostling with Grand Prix track and field starting off,
- 8:04Yeah, I think. Grand Slam, negative Grand Slam.
- 8:08Yeah, Grand Grand Prix was he might have a marketing issue
- 8:10because I also called it the Golden Spikes Tour, which, Oh,
- 8:12really? That's like from 1980 I think to
- 8:14be honest. With you, yeah, No, I think, I
- 8:15think that with with that, there's going to be a little bit
- 8:18more competition and our sport as a whole does need to grow and
- 8:22we need to fine tune to figure out better ways to market.
- 8:24Itself, do you have issues that there are no field events?
- 8:27Yes, I do. Yeah.
- 8:29And I, I saw what, you know, they were saying about it of,
- 8:32you know, I could save track but I can't save field.
- 8:34Yeah, yeah. We just need somebody like that
- 8:37to step in for the field side of things.
- 8:39Yeah. And show.
- 8:41Yeah. You know, I think Drake does a
- 8:42great job with a lot of the field events they do with the
- 8:44pole vault in the mall, in the street and things like that.
- 8:46So the more we can do to kind of market our sport a little bit
- 8:49better 'cause it is an exciting sport when it's on property.
- 8:51I'm here with that. I love that.
- 8:52Hey, thank you so much man. I'm extra so grateful for you.
- 8:56Thanks for not going to the comedy club.
- 8:57Instead, you stayed here this time.
- 8:59I appreciate that very. Much I I would have gotten a
- 9:01tepid response anyway, so I'll stay here instead.
- 9:04Thank you, brother. Appreciate you man.
- 9:08Alright. Yeah.
- 9:09Marcus, do you have? I can't see it.
