Transcript
- 0:00It is the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're live at bear Smokehouse Barbecue Bob
- 0:03Joyce, Adam Gardino and coach Mike Kavanaugh ahead of the weekend series with the
- 0:07BU Terriers. Game one on Friday at Tuscana. We'll have it for around
- 0:11the radio at six forty five and then Saturday at seven oh five up at
- 0:14Againnis and the Terriers are having an excellent year. BCBU one two in the
- 0:18national rankings. The Terriers are twenty eight and two fourteen four and two in
- 0:22the league. They have a fantastic freshman and maclin Celabrini who will probably be
- 0:26the first pick in the draft this year. And Lane Hudson not too shabby
- 0:30defenseman. You had the game winning goal in the Hockey's Championship game last year.
- 0:34And they're just a dangerous team. And like BC, they coming at
- 0:38you in waves, don't they they do. They're a little different than BC,
- 0:42I think. You know, they've got some experienced defenseman in, you
- 0:47know, McCarthy and Weber or two grad kids, you know, Hudson obviously
- 0:54as as dynamic as it can be. But they're deep back there on d
- 0:58They got McGavin McCarthy. They have Gallagher kid, who's a junior I believe
- 1:03now, so they have a lot of experience on d I think up front.
- 1:07Obviously, Celebrini could be the first pick overall in the draft. He's
- 1:11a he's a special player. He's got a high, high motor. He's
- 1:15one of those rare players you know that that is so skilled with a high
- 1:22motor. It's you know, when you have that, it's like a Sydney
- 1:26Crosby type. You know, when you have that combination, it's it's special.
- 1:30So he's got a lot of that. And then they have some big
- 1:33size too, like Tuck and Peterson are big kids, will the chance of
- 1:36big kid. They have speed with Wilmer and Zabine, So they they're pretty
- 1:42They're pretty deep in all aspects. They've got greatting this year, haven't.
- 1:45Yeah, Kuran's come over from Brown and he's done a good job for him.
- 1:48But he on the radar, I mean with the transfer portal and all
- 1:51these switches happening. Was there ever a conversation or no? No, not
- 1:55with him. Yeah, with Celebrini, we've had the opportunity to see in
- 2:00person met us a line for Boston College. So how does he compare and
- 2:06contrast to any of those top guys for BC, Well, I mean he
- 2:09can play with any of those guys. It's just they have three on one
- 2:13line right who have played together for a long time, so they have have
- 2:17a lot of chemistry and together. I watched some of their game yesterday against
- 2:22Hu Mass and they're just so dynamic when they have the puck. Uh,
- 2:29you know, Celebrini, He's played with a bunch of different linemates I think
- 2:31this year. But h he's got great numbers. He's got to have twenty
- 2:37goals, right, twenty three? Yeah, twenty three goals. So he's
- 2:39second in the country behind Coachi and yeah, yeah, second in the conference
- 2:44and second in the country. Yeah. And Lane's brother, Quinn's having himself
- 2:47quite a here. He's vastly improved, and I understand he's a solid player.
- 2:52And then Lane's got a brother coming next year play as a defenseman cut
- 2:57from the same cloth as Lane coming to play next year for BU. How
- 3:01has a j pandelfo system in his second year change from what they had previously.
- 3:07I don't think so. You know. I think one thing that Jay
- 3:08does really well is their kids play hard like there was times where I think,
- 3:17you know, b you would just try to beat you on skill alone,
- 3:21and now that's not the case. They're they're going to come at you.
- 3:24They play a physical brand of hockey. They play the right way.
- 3:29They you know, come at you on the ford check, they backcheck with
- 3:35tenacity. So they're really they're not just a run and gun team that's going
- 3:40to try to beat you six or five. They play solid, hard nosed
- 3:46defense as well. And you know, for the coaching staff, you mentioned
- 3:51j Pandolpha his associate head coach, Joe Perira nine years on staff with you.
- 3:55How does texting or communication with Joe this week vary from the perhaps other
- 4:01communication throughout the year. Not much. I actually talked to them today because
- 4:04they're coming in on Thursday. So I mean, Joe worked for me for
- 4:11nine years, so we have a great relationship. So I talked to him
- 4:15probably at least once a week. And sometimes it's not even about hockey,
- 4:19it's about different stuff. So but that you know, I work with Greg
- 4:24Brown for a long time, and I work with Brendan Buckley and Mike Suza.
- 4:28So when you work with guys, uh, you know, when you
- 4:31have great relationships with him. Obviously, on game night you're competitive and you
- 4:34want to win, but the friendship goes much deeper than that. So there's
- 4:41no moratorium from Sunday to now. Okay, not not from my standpoint,
- 4:46maybe for him, Mike. The finish lines coming coming close. Five games
- 4:49left too with b U, two in Northeastern and then the one with Vermont
- 4:53before the hockey's playoffs begin. To your guys since the finish line coming here,
- 4:58knowing that they have to get, you know, start doing some Yeah,
- 5:00I think differently. We talked about it a lot over the break,
- 5:02like we have to get to the point where we're playing our very best hockey
- 5:06going into the playoffs. That's our goal. We want to really strive to
- 5:14hit on hit all cylinders and be playing our best hockey going into the playoffs.
- 5:18My apologies, I did not ask this earlier when you mentioned some of
- 5:21the guys really needed the week off. What types of things can they do
- 5:25other than rest? Do they have cold tubs they can get into? What
- 5:28type of rehabs are are we talking about here? They have the Normatax,
- 5:31they have cold tubs, hot tubs. What's a Normatax? It's it's like
- 5:35a pant that they put on for the bottom of their legs and it's a
- 5:41circulation and their legs going. But yeah, Mo Butler does a great job
- 5:46with our guys, uh the recovery piece and rejuvenating. And it was definitely
- 5:53we We had played a lot of hockey, so it was beneficial for us
- 5:57to have that weekend off. And I know specifically Jake blame with somebody who
- 6:01recently missed some time. So where is his health with that knee bang up?
- 6:06Progressed? He was great? Did he was full go today in practice?
- 6:12You know, I'm limiting his contact, but just precautionary reasons. If
- 6:16we were playing a game tonight, he'd be going full tilt. But he's
- 6:20no, he was great. Does he have a red jersey an so you
- 6:24don't hit him sometimes? Yeah? Really? Okay, all right? What
- 6:30about Jake Felucent's he's come back. I know you've raided the bottom his health
- 6:31is and he's doing all right? He seems to be. Yeah, so
- 6:34it seems to be. And yeah, when I'm watching him play, I
- 6:41think you know he's back. I mean, i'd have to ask him.
- 6:43I haven't asked him in a while I don't know if he's one hundred after
- 6:46that injury. You know, it's a lot of time to miss, but
- 6:49he looks pretty good. I'm just thinking about roster composition and guys kind of
- 6:54coming in and out over the last few weeks. When you're feeling out that
- 6:57extra skater at this stage of the season, what do you what are you
- 7:00thinking? It seems to generally be the forward that you plug in there.
- 7:03But how do you make that decision? It depends on the opponent. Sometimes
- 7:09it depends on the opponent, the rink, their style of play. Do
- 7:13we want a heavier player, do we want a more skilled player? So
- 7:18you know, a lot of factors go into it. We sit down as
- 7:20a staff and discuss that and make a decision. And then assuming all twelve
- 7:24forwards stay healthy throughout that game, So how do you then decide when to
- 7:28insert the thirteenth guy in? Well, every now and then, you pop
- 7:31try to get the guy a shift, and sometimes I don't play him much.
- 7:36You know, there's times where you don't play much, and there's other
- 7:39times where maybe some other guy's not going that well that night and he takes
- 7:44his spot. So it is no we don't have a cut and dry formula.
- 7:47It's on a game to game basis. All right, last question before
- 7:50the break, which brings me to this. During the game, who's in
- 7:55charge of making sure the line changes get done throughout the game? I do
- 7:59the forwards and Tyler does the defense. Okay, right now? And optical
- 8:03optimum is what about a minute for second? Five seconds? Probably? Yeah,
- 8:07forty five seconds. You start going over that it can get dicey,
- 8:11right and later in the game you get a little tighter as the game.
- 8:13Well, what you gotta be careful of is if you're on for forty seconds
- 8:16and the puck turns over, you don't want to get stuck in your own
- 8:20zone. Now for another now you're on it for over a minute in your
- 8:22own zone. So it's uh, that's why we try to you know,
- 8:28if you're at the forty second you should be looking for a change. Okay,
- 8:31all right. When we come back, it's Adam doing the interviews this
- 8:33week because I was occupied with hoops today. It'll be matthew Wood and Jake
- 8:37Richard coming up. As you're listening to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show, we're
- 8:41live at Bear Smokehouse. Barbecue and Hartford onlear Field stay with us.
