- 0:21Very excited to have with us, Jesse Humphrey.
- 0:21She is the Vice President of Marketing at Diversified.
- 0:22And Jesse, thanks so much for joining us today.
- 0:23Of course.
- 0:23Happy to be here, Matt.
- 0:24There's a wide variety of things we could talk about, but I think in our
- 0:25limited time, I want to talk about the balance between brand and demand.
- 0:26I think a lot of conversations we've had on this show over the years,
- 0:27it's called Sales Pipeline Radio.
- 0:28So you'd imagine it's about demand.
- 0:29Increasingly, I see more and more companies as we head into 2025
- 0:30indicate a greater investment in brand to support and grow their business.
- 0:31So I guess the central question I think is, What's the right
- 0:32balance between brand and demand?
- 0:33How do they best coexist?
- 0:34And to start with, how do you define and differentiate those
- 0:35in the work that you've done?
- 0:35It's a great question.
- 0:36And I really think you're right.
- 0:36Especially in B2B and technology, we see a lot of marketers really
- 0:38focusing in on that demand gen activity versus the brand stuff.
- 0:39For me, I'm a little bias more towards brand.
- 0:40And I always feel like if you don't have the brand as your foundation, your demand
- 0:42engine is not going to work as well.
- 0:43The data out there also shows so much.
- 0:44The 6sense report, the B2B Buyer Report that just came out, right?
- 0:45Talking about buyers, they're already 69 percent of the way through their journey
- 0:46before they even engage with sellers.
- 0:47So all of that journey upfront, what is that?
- 0:48What's driving that?
- 0:48That's the brand.
- 0:49And so for me, I think if you're defining brand demand I like to
- 0:50think about it a little bit too
- 0:51like your brand is like the car.
- 0:52Your demand is the engine.
- 0:52It's the functionality that makes the movement happen.
- 0:53And the intent signals as a customer in the driver's seat.
- 0:54Maybe they're hitting the gas pedal.
- 0:55That's the intent signal.
- 0:55And then your demand engine is the thing that's responding to that,
- 0:56to get the movement, the next thing, the conversion to happen.
- 0:58And so that's how I like to think about it, but with the data showing, I think
- 1:00that buyers, as they're evaluating, they already, know the top vendors,
- 1:02people that they're looking for and having that up front and the brand
- 1:03piece being more of a focus is only going to help to accelerate the action
- 1:05once they're in the driver's seat.
- 1:05Yeah, I completely agree with you.
- 1:06We've seen for years data that indicates-- and it's uncanny to me
- 1:07that the data is usually in 68 to 74 percent right in the same place of
- 1:08the amount of the buying journey that is over before sellers are involved.
- 1:10And the newer data that I've seen from this fall actually makes it
- 1:11worse to say that those same buyers, they do not want to talk to you.
- 1:12Until that moment, they don't want to hear from you.
- 1:12They don't want to have a conversation with you.
- 1:13What that really means is they don't want to talk about product.
- 1:14They don't want to have a sales conversation, but they will still listen
- 1:15if you have something interesting to say.
- 1:15They'll still listen if you are doing something that is more value added,
- 1:16that is more educational, that is more about helping them be and think smarter.
- 1:18To me, that feels like the activation of the brand opportunity for a
- 1:19lot of companies moving forward.
- 1:20Absolutely.
- 1:20And I think the other data that I've seen, that's really interesting
- 1:21to me too, is that between 40 and 60 percent of sales deals are also
- 1:23lost due to customer indecision.
- 1:24And so there's also something there that's really interesting to me
- 1:25is that from a marketing, a brand perspective that we really have to
- 1:27start instilling that trust up front.
- 1:28And it's not just about brand awareness.
- 1:29It's about building that trust as a credible company that's going to help
- 1:30them get from point A to point B.
- 1:31And so some of those demand generation efforts that we're putting in to
- 1:32supplement the brand efforts need to align to deliver on that brand promise.
- 1:34That's right.
- 1:35I think one of the reasons why the demand side has been so attractive as
- 1:36a focus area is because we feel like we can measure it more effectively.
- 1:37And I could argue that all day long too, because the more complex your motion, the
- 1:38less likely you're going to say, Oh, the white paper download or the, paid search
- 1:39click generated the seven figure deal.
- 1:40But at least we've convinced ourselves that we could actually
- 1:41measure the effectiveness of demand.
- 1:42How do you do that on brand, right?
- 1:42What have we learned from CPG companies and what have we learned from larger
- 1:44B2B companies that do invest heavily in brand and have throughout all of these
- 1:46changes in the market, like how should executives be thinking about that?
- 1:47That is the age old question.
- 1:48And the thing that I think that people and marketers ask more
- 1:49than anything but there are ways.
- 1:49And I think when marketing starts looking overall at the metrics, that they're
- 1:51not just looking at those campaign level KPIs, that we're actually looking at
- 1:53overall the business, the pipeline that we're generating, the deal sizes that are
- 1:55coming in, all of the things more from a higher level, business level perspective.
- 1:56I think it's important to track those things upfront, but for us tracking
- 1:58branded search traffic is one way.
- 1:59Comparing that against conversion rates to identify awareness driven...
- 2:00how is that impacting our demand generation?
- 2:01And making sure that those things are trending in the right direction.
- 2:03Inbound, obviously, if you've got people coming into your website,
- 2:04they're converting more on your website, you're able to see if
- 2:05those brand efforts are working.
- 2:05And for me, the first thing I did when I came to Diversified, I looked at
- 2:07our contact us form, our inbound form.
- 2:08And how did you hear about us?
- 2:09And if you give them an open opportunity to tell you how they found you, they
- 2:11will pretty explicitly tell you.
- 2:11And I think being able to find some of that data and those details will
- 2:13actually be able to help you say, Hey, here's some stuff that we've done from
- 2:14a brand perspective that is actually helping us to convert inbound deals.
- 2:16Yeah, we're talking today on Sales Pipeline Radio with Jesse Humphrey.
- 2:17She's the VP of Marketing for Diversified.
- 2:18And, it seems to me that there's an awful lot we can learn from the consumer
- 2:19space on this from the way back machine.
- 2:20I know you spent some time with Red Bull.
- 2:21And here's an organization-- very different market, but has invested
- 2:22heavily, not just in brand, but really making itself a media company,
- 2:24like legit creating channels and content that isn't just about getting
- 2:25people into the funnel or getting a pixel or cookie on your computer.
- 2:27They are a media company as much as they're a beverage company.
- 2:28Is there a lesson there for B2B marketers and B2B brands how to create and
- 2:30really manifest this brand opportunity?
- 2:31Wow.
- 2:31Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:31And it's very much in line really with even what
- 2:32Diversified does for our clients.
- 2:33The business that we're in really in pro AV, audio visual,
- 2:34is we have two business units.
- 2:35We have a workplace business unit and kind of a media business unit.
- 2:36But what we're really seeing today across the industry is
- 2:37the convergence between the two.
- 2:38We've been saying this for years, but we're really starting to see it even more
- 2:39now, is all companies are media companies.
- 2:40So that content that you're producing and being able to enable that kind of thought
- 2:41leadership to be able to be distributed, whether internal or external is absolutely
- 2:43key I think in helping to create that demand, create that brand experience.
- 2:45Like I said, it is both internal and external.
- 2:46It's the brand experience as as an associate or an employee or a
- 2:47partner, just as much as it is for your clients that you're talking to.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:48And I think that, if we take this from a different lens, where if we're
- 2:50focused on demand, then what we do, we're trying to go generate leads.
- 2:51We're trying to go generate demand.
- 2:51And if you ask the sales team, they're like, we need more leads.
- 2:52We need more leads.
- 2:52I don't actually think sales teams, that's not really what they want.
- 2:53What they really want is a market that craves what they're selling.
- 2:55Yeah.
- 2:55And and what are the ways that can manifest, like understanding the
- 2:56problem, quantifying the problem, having awareness that you are
- 2:57associated with solving that problem.
- 2:58So when they call Oh, I've heard of you guys, right?
- 2:58Or when you email them or when they see you at an event, Oh,
- 2:59I've heard of these guys, right?
- 2:59And there's an association with something.
- 3:00Because let's face it, like a lot of the sales and marketing we do is driving by
- 3:01someone's house at 35 miles an hour and trying to throw something in the mailbox.
- 3:02You're gonna miss a lot.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:03So if I say, how do I build awareness of us, but also a correlation between us
- 3:04and a problem that needs solving so that the prospects are more likely to answer
- 3:06the phone when the sales team calls?
- 3:06So they're more likely to lighten their gate as they walk by
- 3:07your booth at the trade show.
- 3:08These are measurable manifestations of what a brand can do in B2B.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:09And I think also, from my perspective too, when you talk about the investment between
- 3:11brand and demand and how marketing leaders are really separating that out today, it's
- 3:13generally been really heavy, more like 70 percent more demand, 30 percent brand,
- 3:14and sometimes even, more than that, right?
- 3:15I split it more down the middle.
- 3:16We really need to have both.
- 3:17Brand needs to be more of a focus area.
- 3:18And, when you talk about like at the trade shows, our company
- 3:19has been pretty event heavy.
- 3:19But it's how are we activating at each one of those things?
- 3:20How are we also creating more content at those events and almost
- 3:22repurposing some of the things?
- 3:22And then distributing them across multiple channels to make sure that
- 3:24you're there when those buyers are ready to actually have that conversation.
- 3:25That's right.
- 3:26Thank you so much for being part of this today.
- 3:26I have a feeling we're going to be talking a lot more about brand demand and how
- 3:27they all fit together in a go to market mix over the course of 2025 as well.
- 3:29Thank you everyone so much for listening, watching, downloading
- 3:30this episode of Sales Pipeline Radio.
- 3:30We'll be back next week with more content until then thanks so much for being here.
- 3:31We'll see you next week.
- 3:32Appreciate it.
- 3:32Thanks, Matt.
