- 0:01As the spiritual seeker begins to address the question of
- 0:04mastery over the sex impulse, he becomes aware of the
- 0:08difficulties of tackling A deeply embedded process that
- 0:12stretches back into the early phases of animal evolution and
- 0:17thus has acquired a strong power base within the being.
- 0:22This power base for the sexual impulse includes long
- 0:25established response mechanisms that trigger internal surges of
- 0:30certain hormones that direct the reaction of the mind, the heart,
- 0:34the nervous system, the vital and physical systems.
- 0:38Much of this response is virtually automatic as the
- 0:41triggering mechanism is activated in the being through
- 0:44the senses, by reception of pheromones or directly by the
- 0:49mind itself. As long as we are identified
- 0:53with the external mind, life, body complex and the ego
- 0:57personality, we are subject to the pressures of the sexual
- 1:01impulse and these automatic triggered responses.
- 1:07The first attempts are generally made by trying to use willpower
- 1:10to deny or suppress the impulse. This generally fails as the
- 1:16instinctive behaviour is more powerful than the mental will.
- 1:19Generally this leads to attempts to deny the triggering
- 1:24activities, such as abandoning life in the world for a quiet
- 1:28retreat in The Cave, the forest or the monastery, generally with
- 1:34a separation of the genders to avoid immediate pressure of
- 1:38sensual impressions. This also is doomed to failure
- 1:43as it does not solve the problem but simply avoids it.
- 1:47Then there are the attempts to beat the nature into submission
- 1:51through some form of physical austerity or even bodily torture
- 1:55such as self flagellation or other painful means based in
- 2:01negative training that associates pain with the rising
- 2:05of thoughts or impulses in this direction.
- 2:10This type of operant conditioning may succeed in the
- 2:14short term, but does not actually solve the problem long
- 2:19term. It can create serious negative
- 2:21consequences at a number of levels in the being.
- 2:26Some people believe that by restricting sensory stimuli, the
- 2:30sexual impulse can be avoided. This is frequently been used to
- 2:35hide women from view through use of visually obstructive clothing
- 2:39or through sequestration. This essentially tries to shift
- 2:43the responsibility for the rising of the sex impulse away
- 2:47from men and make the women the cause of the problem.
- 2:52Similarly, these societies may try to restrict expression,
- 2:56media and relationships, separate the genders, and
- 3:01otherwise expect that by suppression and denial of sense
- 3:04impressions the sexual impulse is gone.
- 3:08This of course is not a solution and in fact appears in many
- 3:13cases to make the societies within which this occurs more
- 3:17sexually aggressive, as it is simply another form of
- 3:21repression and does not go to the root of the issue dealing
- 3:26with the underlying sexual impulse at its basic level.
- 3:32Having reviewed what clearly has not worked, it is time to look
- 3:36at other options for gaining mastery over this impulse.
- 3:40The key to mastery over any of the actions or responses of the
- 3:44external being is to shift the standpoint away from living on
- 3:49the surface to that of the witness of the nature.
- 3:53This allows the witness to view the external impulses, pressures
- 3:58and reactions as something external and therefore easier to
- 4:03manage than something that one feels to be an integrated part
- 4:07of oneself. One begin can begin to recognize
- 4:11the pressure from outside, such as through the pervasive imagery
- 4:15that occurs in all the media and in society at large, and the
- 4:20vital pressures of social relationships that encourage
- 4:24sexual expression and the pheromones released in one's
- 4:28proximity in a social setting that can trigger these reactions
- 4:33and simply not let them take over.
- 4:36The action of the mind, life or body.
- 4:39As the witness consciousness becomes established, its power
- 4:43to not just witness but master the actions of the external
- 4:47mind, life, body, complex increases.
- 4:51As the process develops, the seeker can experience the relief
- 4:55of the pressure in the mind and in the emotions more quickly
- 4:59than in the parts of the being to which the sexual impulse is
- 5:03native, the vital and physical aspects of the being.
- 5:07Eventually, however, as the energy is redirected constantly,
- 5:13all parts of the being shift their focus away from the sexual
- 5:18energy towards utilization of that energy in other ways
- 5:21supportive of the sadhna. This process can take some time,
- 5:27so it is important for the secret to not become discouraged
- 5:31or give up the effort. The pressure of the environment
- 5:35and any residual impulses remaining in the subconscious
- 5:39parts of the being imply that the seeker must remain vigilant
- 5:43and non reactive and at the same time not become overly anxious
- 5:49about a rising of the impulse in the dream state.
- 5:52For instance, if it is otherwise successfully rejected in the
- 5:56active daily life. Dreams can take up impressions
- 6:00not actively recognized or responded to during the waking
- 6:04state. In a hyper sexualized society,
- 6:08the impressions are constantly being captured even if not
- 6:12attended to. Even if they are rejected by the
- 6:15waking consciousness, they can act to trigger dream responses
- 6:19until the embedded instincts and trained behaviors are finally
- 6:25eliminated from all the vital and physical nature in their
- 6:29entirety. Trio Robindo writes quote.
- 6:34As for the method of mastery, it cannot be done by physical
- 6:38abstinence alone. It proceeds by a process of
- 6:42combined detachment and rejection.
- 6:45The consciousness stands back from the sex impulse, feels it
- 6:49as not its own, as something alien thrown on it by its nature
- 6:54force, to which it refuses assent or identification.
- 7:00Each time a certain movement of rejection throws it more and
- 7:03more outward, the mind remains unaffected.
- 7:07After a time, the vital being, which is the chief support,
- 7:12withdraws from it In the same way.
- 7:14Finally, the physical consciousness no longer supports
- 7:18it. This process continues until
- 7:21even the subconscious can no longer rouse it up in dream, and
- 7:25no further movement comes from the outer nature force to
- 7:29rekindle this lower fire. This is the course when the sex
- 7:34propensity sticks obstinately, but there are some who can
- 7:39eliminate it decisively by a swift radical dropping away from
- 7:43the nature. That, however, is more rare.
- 7:48It has to be said that the total elimination of the sex impulse
- 7:52is one of the most difficult things in sadhana, and one must
- 7:55be prepared for it to take time. But its total disappearance has
- 8:00been achieved, and a practical liberation crossed only by
- 8:04occasional dream movements from the subconscious is fairly
- 8:08common. End Quote reference.
