- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist and also happen to be
- 0:10a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every. Day to record a podcast.
- 0:15To teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. OK, I have quite the story to
- 0:30tell you. So besides my chickens and my
- 0:34dogs, my cat, I have geckos, I have crested geckos and my
- 0:38crested geckos happen to love the crickets.
- 0:42And yes, there's a pre packaged food that you can get for them
- 0:46and it's a balanced diet, but they don't love it.
- 0:48They'll eat it, but they don't love it.
- 0:49They don't eat that much of it. So I have a very strong belief
- 0:53that I always want to give them crickets because it's a good
- 0:56wholesome food for them. And it's, it's very convenient
- 0:59for me because right here where I live, there's a hardware store
- 1:02that sells live crickets. They sell it for people who have
- 1:06things that eat the crickets. They sell it for people who go
- 1:08fishing. It's these live crickets.
- 1:11So once a week they get a delivery on Thursday of live
- 1:14crickets, which means that on Saturday I usually go and pick
- 1:17up crickets. And crickets are not expensive.
- 1:21I mean, like you, they sell them by like a tube.
- 1:23They measure them into this tube, and then they say a full
- 1:26tube of crickets is $8. So here I go in my usual thing.
- 1:31I've got my little tiny container that I put my crickets
- 1:33in and I go in, I say this young man who's working there, he's in
- 1:38his 20s and I've seen him before, but I've not dealt with
- 1:42him before. And you know, I'm all Miss
- 1:45Friendly. I know everybody in the store,
- 1:47they know me. We talk.
- 1:49It's always very like Friendly. And the woman that runs the
- 1:52store, the manager, she and I are always talking about all the
- 1:55different bird baths they're getting in with these beautiful
- 1:58hand painted bird baths. I, I'm a regular customer.
- 2:01That's my point. And, and obviously with what I
- 2:05do, a customer service, understanding humans, it's a big
- 2:08part of my whole belief system. So when I go, can I have a full
- 2:12tube of crickets? He says yes.
- 2:15And as he's scooping them, I see that he's scooping off the
- 2:18bottom where there are inevitably in this bin that they
- 2:21keep them in some dead crickets. So I said to him, it appears
- 2:27that you're selling me some dead crickets in there.
- 2:30So I would like you to have, I'd like you to correct that,
- 2:32please. May I have the live crickets
- 2:34because I'm feeding them to my geckos, which makes like perfect
- 2:36sense. Maybe he doesn't know what I'm
- 2:38selling, what, what I'm doing with them when he sells them to
- 2:40me. And he says to me, we don't
- 2:43guarantee live animals. And I, I, my brain froze and I
- 2:47said, I'm sorry, what? And he said we don't guarantee
- 2:51live animals. And I said, OK, but I'm not
- 2:55buying chicks or anything else. I'm buying crickets.
- 2:59And I can see that they're dead. So technically you're selling
- 3:02them to me when they're dead before I've purchased them.
- 3:07And he looks at me and he says we don't guarantee live animals.
- 3:13And I said, so you're telling me if I go to the manager and I
- 3:17tell her that you're giving me dead crickets, she's going to
- 3:20say that's OK because you don't guarantee live animals.
- 3:23And he's like, well, I don't know what she's going to say.
- 3:25I just know the rule is we don't guarantee live animals.
- 3:28And I said, yes, but that rule is relevant to once the animals
- 3:32are purchased, that you don't guarantee them.
- 3:34So in other words, if I go and take these crickets and leave
- 3:37them in my car and it's 100° and then I come and say to you, all
- 3:40the crickets die, you would not guarantee that.
- 3:44And he's like, no, we just don't guarantee live animals.
- 3:46And I felt like I was in like the twilight zone.
- 3:51I felt like any moment I was going to see Rod Sterling
- 3:55standing there having a conversation with me about how
- 3:57the fact I was in the freaking twilight zone.
- 4:00I was shocked. I could not believe that
- 4:02somebody, anybody could have this, taken a rule like this and
- 4:08extrapolated this as good customer service.
- 4:13So of course I'm like, OK, let's start over.
- 4:18How about if you just dump out what you've already put in that
- 4:21tube and start putting in live ones for me?
- 4:24He says, I can't guarantee that they're all going to be alive.
- 4:28And at that moment, I was like, OK, I, I, I don't know what to
- 4:34say. Give me what you have so far and
- 4:37I'm going to go to the front. So he finishes putting the tube
- 4:40together, gives it to me and of course I then proceed to go up
- 4:43front and attempt to have a conversation with the person
- 4:47who's the manager up there and and say something to her about
- 4:50it. And she just looked at me and
- 4:52she didn't even know what to say.
- 4:54Like you could tell she was embarrassed.
- 4:56And I said, here's the thing, half that tube is dead.
- 4:58So I'm willing to pay for half that tube and she's like, that's
- 5:01fine. And so she but she didn't argue
- 5:03with me. She didn't say anything, but I
- 5:05could tell she embarrassed she felt off about the whole
- 5:08situation. So here I am befuddled by this
- 5:11whole thing and I get in the truck and I'm driving back and
- 5:14I'm like, what would possess a person to take that?
- 5:18You know, so that that directive so literal.
- 5:21And more importantly, if his manager knew he was this
- 5:24literal, why didn't she try to correct him on things otherwise?
- 5:28And then I thought to myself, maybe she does.
- 5:29Maybe this is just the best that they can do.
- 5:31Maybe this is the best that they have.
- 5:34And so I tried to get it out of my head, but it still niggles at
- 5:39me that that is the level of customer service because I know
- 5:42he's going to be there again when I go back.
- 5:44So I have to work through this and I have to figure about how
- 5:48I'm going to handle this the next time I go in because he's
- 5:50probably the Saturday person now.
- 5:53So the reason I'm sharing all this with you is because you
- 5:55see, even though I went told somebody doesn't mean I'm going
- 5:58to have a resolution to it until I have resolution myself.
- 6:01And until I figure out how I'm going to handle it next time,
- 6:04which is I'm going to go in, I'm going to attempt to not have him
- 6:07give it to me or I'm going to tell him ahead of time.
- 6:11We're going to get crickets. But I want you to take them off
- 6:13the side. I'm just going to say take them
- 6:16off the side. You know not I'm going to stand
- 6:19there or I'm going to ask him, can I do it myself?
- 6:22So we'll see how that goes. And I'll keep you updated on the
- 6:25cricket saga. But where else does this show up
- 6:28in the world? Like, where else do we have
- 6:29these situations that come about and we're just befuddled by how
- 6:34people handle it. And then we have to figure it
- 6:36out on our own. But the best part is we get the
- 6:39chance to figure it out. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:41you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:44Bye.
