- 0:01Patanjali in his yoga, sutras describes the practice of
- 0:05samyama which is a power of identification that results from
- 0:09the systematic development of dhaarana.
- 0:12Holding the mind on to some particular object, Tiana and
- 0:17unbroken flow of knowledge, in that object and sumati
- 0:22reflecting on the meaning, not the form of the object.
- 0:26Wherever the power of some Yama is directed upon whichever
- 0:31object or focus a state of identification, with that object
- 0:35takes place and direct knowledge, occurs for the
- 0:38practitioner. Note the description and meaning
- 0:42courtesy of Swami Vivekananda in his lectures on Raja yoga.
- 0:48Many techniques utilized to focus.
- 0:50The attention had been developed by yogic practitioners overtime,
- 0:55Tibetan Buddhist practitioners, develop the science of inner
- 0:59visualization, as a means of focus.
- 1:02Shutting out all extraneous thoughts, emotions, or feelings
- 1:07certain yogic paths, recommend the use of prophetic, focusing,
- 1:11intensely and solely on a light such as other candle until the
- 1:16Consciousness shifts to a new Spective and the West certain
- 1:23forms of athletic activity are enhanced when the athlete
- 1:26happens to enter into the Zone. A status of awareness that
- 1:30blocks out effortlessly, all extraneous focus and one becomes
- 1:36the action solely and completely religious speakers have been
- 1:41known to enter into states of ecstatic trance through intense
- 1:45focused devotional exercises. There's an interesting story
- 1:50from the Mahabharata as the princes were being instructed in
- 1:53the science of archery. They were asked to focus on a
- 1:57particular bird in a tree at some distance and then to aim
- 2:01their Arrow at the eye of the bird.
- 2:04The teacher then asked each one, what he saw and they variously
- 2:09described the sky, the tree, the leaves, the bird, and the, I
- 2:14along with the beak when he came to Arjuna.
- 2:18However, who was to be the preeminent Archer of the age
- 2:23Arjuna replied. He saw only a dark spot.
- 2:27The intensity of focus was so great that he was not able to
- 2:31see and report on anything other than the actual eye of the bird.
- 2:37The mother notes one can learn how to identify oneself.
- 2:41One must learn. It is indispensable if one wants
- 2:45to get out of one's ego for so long, as one is shut up in one's
- 2:49ego. When can't make any progress,
- 2:53how can it be done? There are many processes.
- 2:58I'll tell you one, when I was in Paris.
- 3:01I used to go to many places where there were Gatherings of
- 3:04all kinds people, making all sorts of research has spiritual,
- 3:09so-called spiritual a cult, researchers, Etc.
- 3:14And once I was invited to meet a young lady, I believe she was
- 3:18Swedish who had found a process of knowledge, exactly.
- 3:23A process for Learning. And so she explained it to us.
- 3:28It's like this, you take an object or make a sign on a
- 3:31Blackboard, or take a drawing? That's not important.
- 3:35Take whatever is most convenient for you.
- 3:38Suppose, for instance, that I draw for you, she had a
- 3:41Blackboard. I draw a design.
- 3:44She drew a kind of half geometric design.
- 3:48Now, you sit in front of the design and concentrate all your
- 3:51attention upon it on that design, which is there you
- 3:56concentrate, concentrate. Tree without letting anything
- 3:59else, enter your Consciousness except that Your Eyes Are Fixed
- 4:04On the drawing and don't move at all.
- 4:07You are as it were hypnotized by the drawing you look.
- 4:11And so she sat there looking, you look, look, look, I don't
- 4:18know. It takes more or less time but
- 4:20still for one who is used to it it goes pretty fast.
- 4:25You look, look look you become that drawing, you are looking at
- 4:33nothing else exists in the world any longer accept the drawing
- 4:38and then suddenly you pass to the other side.
- 4:42And when you pass to the other side, you enter a new
- 4:45Consciousness. And you know, We had a good
- 4:50laugh for it was amusing but it is quite true.
- 4:53It's an excellent method to practice naturally.
- 4:57Instead of taking a drawing or any object, you may take, for
- 5:00instance, an idea, a few words, you have a problem preoccupying.
- 5:05You you don't know the solution of the problem.
- 5:09Well, you objectify your problem in your mind, put it in the most
- 5:13precise exact succinctly terms possible.
- 5:17And then concentrate make an effort, you concentrate only on
- 5:22the words and if possible on the idea they represent that is upon
- 5:28your problem. You concentrate, concentrate,
- 5:32concentrate until nothing else exists but that and it is true
- 5:39that all of a sudden you have the feeling of something opening
- 5:42and one is on the other side. The other side of what it means
- 5:47that you have opened a door of your Consciousness and
- 5:50instantaneously, you have the solution of your problem.
- 5:54It is an excellent method of learning how to identify oneself
