- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Brian. I sing for a band called the Home Team.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We call ourselves heavy pop music and we are going
- 0:04Speaker 2: on tour in Australia with Media, Pride and Jackson.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Mannikin fantastic Brian, thanks for joining us.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Today, brother, Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:13Speaker 3: My pleasure.
- 0:13Speaker 4: So as you say, the Home Team returned to Australia
- 0:15Speaker 4: next month for Runham shows through May Day, Pride and
- 0:18Speaker 4: Jackson Mannequin, starting in Melbourne on the twelfth of September,
- 0:21Speaker 4: before heading to Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide and finishing in
- 0:23Speaker 4: Perth on September nine. Age, So it's not that long ago.
- 0:26Speaker 4: You're out here last through taskets made it. He even
- 0:28Speaker 4: had a chance donepack.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Oh that trip was awesome. I remember it like it
- 0:36Speaker 2: was yesterday. We all kind of agreed that Australia is
- 0:40Speaker 2: one of the best places on Earth and we when
- 0:42Speaker 2: we got the offer to come back, we are. We
- 0:44Speaker 2: were very, very excited and it was immediate.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Guess that was actually your first tour of Australia, bro,
- 0:51Speaker 4: So how do you think the crowds like you over?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Heah, it was good.
- 0:55Speaker 2: We were on That tour was a much heavier bill
- 0:58Speaker 2: and we were definitely the lightest band on this time around,
- 1:03Speaker 2: I think we're probably the heaviest band.
- 1:04Speaker 1: On the bill, so it's I mean, the reception was awesome.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We got to meet a lot of people who have
- 1:10Speaker 2: been fans of us for a long time, but in
- 1:14Speaker 2: the last year we've grown a lot, and I'm very
- 1:17Speaker 2: curious to see if that's translated to Australia and I'm
- 1:21Speaker 2: very curious to meet a lot more people.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Because yeah, it's it's it's been a good.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Year and I'm I'm really really excited for these shows
- 1:30Speaker 2: just because like people will finally be able to get
- 1:32Speaker 2: see us, and the rooms.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Are pretty big, which I'm pretty excited about.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So nice.
- 1:39Speaker 4: As we mentioned, you're ready this time with My Day
- 1:41Speaker 4: Pride through celebrating the twentieth anniversaries. That's a great achievement
- 1:45Speaker 4: for a band, like have you always been fans of this?
- 1:49Speaker 2: So I grew up listening to a lot more metal
- 1:51Speaker 2: and a lot of heavy music. Mayde Prayde was always
- 1:54Speaker 2: on my radar. I knew they were for sure, but
- 1:56Speaker 2: I never dove into their albums until probably like last year,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and I can definitely see why they're as influential as
- 2:03Speaker 2: they are. They and I also have a close friend
- 2:06Speaker 2: who's like a huge mative fan, so him and I,
- 2:08Speaker 2: when I told him I was going on this tour,
- 2:10Speaker 2: he came, He's like, this is their history, like this
- 2:12Speaker 2: is this is this album and this album is this
- 2:14Speaker 2: and like it was It was cool.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But yeah, they're they're They're very clearly extremely.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Influential and for great reason. So for that, i have
- 2:23Speaker 2: a lot of respect for them, and I'm very excited.
- 2:25Speaker 1: To meet them.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Yeah, they could have pretty much chosen anybody to come over, right, Like,
- 2:29Speaker 4: why do you think they chose the Home change specifically?
- 2:33Speaker 1: The good question?
- 2:34Speaker 2: You know, I don't exactly know, but if I were
- 2:39Speaker 2: to wager, I guess our sound is like different enough
- 2:44Speaker 2: but similar enough to what they have on It's it's
- 2:50Speaker 2: maybe more modern and maybe a little heavier. And I
- 2:53Speaker 2: think they're fans, like I think they will like us.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I'm like a little nervous.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I feel like this.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I think at first they might be like, what's going
- 3:03Speaker 2: on here? But yeah, I think it's a it's hopefully
- 3:10Speaker 2: it's just a matter of our sound being like modern
- 3:13Speaker 2: and weird and maybe a little new, And I'm hoping
- 3:17Speaker 2: that it's also just because they enjoy our music.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well that's that's luckilyhood mate. I just thought, I ask you,
- 3:25Speaker 4: so just take somebody come along. And they've just made
- 3:28Speaker 4: may Day fans. They've heard nothing of the home team before.
- 3:30Speaker 4: What three songs he should they listen to in order
- 3:32Speaker 4: to get to know the band better?
- 3:35Speaker 2: They probably loud Worthy and I'll throw right through me
- 3:40Speaker 2: from our previous album.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah nice.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Speaking of albums, bray you right to it on the
- 3:45Speaker 4: back of your latest album, The Crucible of Life, which
- 3:48Speaker 4: came out just every year ago. So did you play
- 3:50Speaker 4: many songs from that album on your last visit to Australia.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We were just in the release cycle of that, so
- 3:56Speaker 2: we probably played all. I think we played all but
- 4:00Speaker 2: one of the songs that had been released to that up.
- 4:02Speaker 1: To that point.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yeah, oh no, no, no, no, I think we played all
- 4:06Speaker 2: the songs that we had released up to that point
- 4:07Speaker 2: from Crinciple. Uh. And I remember because the Australia tour
- 4:10Speaker 2: was the first time I play We played Overtime live
- 4:14Speaker 2: and that song is so much harder vocally than anything
- 4:20Speaker 2: that we've ever heard. It's a doozy and I remember
- 4:24Speaker 2: I remember, like the first show of that tour that
- 4:26Speaker 2: we had done in Australia was at Perth, and we
- 4:29Speaker 2: had this whole flight fiasco prior to that tour, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: so we ended up getting to the show like two
- 4:34Speaker 2: hours before it started and we were beat and I
- 4:37Speaker 2: had to go into singing.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Overtime and it was or I don't know if we
- 4:40Speaker 1: maybe we dropped it that night because I probably.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Anyways, I do distinctly remember overtime like playing that for
- 4:49Speaker 2: I'm much better at singing it now that I've done
- 4:51Speaker 2: it a thousand times. But yeah, we were, we were.
- 4:55Speaker 2: We had the album hadn't come out yet, so there
- 4:56Speaker 2: are gonna be some songs that are new to Australia
- 5:00Speaker 2: on this on this on this.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Tour, fights and how was a reception for The Creaseable Alive? Right?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Did people enjoy it as much as what you hope
- 5:08Speaker 3: they would.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah, we were a little nervous, to be honest, just
- 5:15Speaker 2: going into it because the process of making the album
- 5:17Speaker 2: I sound like a broken up because I've said this
- 5:19Speaker 2: in every interview and I've said it on stage, was
- 5:22Speaker 2: very difficult. It was a very difficult album to make,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and it actually kind of plays into the title of it.
- 5:27Speaker 4: But it.
- 5:29Speaker 2: The reception was fantastic, and I'm really happy about that
- 5:32Speaker 2: because we took took some risks and made kind of
- 5:36Speaker 2: a weird sound, especially releasing Loud first. That's kind of
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's a bit of a black cheep on the album,
- 5:45Speaker 2: and we were I was just like, dude, if are
- 5:46Speaker 2: people are going to think this is too pop or
- 5:48Speaker 2: people are going to think it's too chuggy heavy.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Like, I don't know, people like it?
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah, go, As you mentioned, you've had a chance to
- 5:57Speaker 4: play a lot of those songs live, So are there
- 5:59Speaker 4: any that ever better than what you thought they would
- 6:01Speaker 4: live or any that the opposite Maybe bands didn't like
- 6:04Speaker 4: as much live as you thought they would.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So I'm gonna say a song, but I don't think
- 6:12Speaker 2: we're gonna be playing it on the Australia tour because
- 6:14Speaker 2: it's not popular enough. But we've played turn You Off
- 6:19Speaker 2: a few times, uh, and that song is fun. It's
- 6:24Speaker 2: really difficult for all the four of us, but it's
- 6:28Speaker 2: it's definitely a lot of fun. Hell is not one
- 6:32Speaker 2: of my like album favorites, but it's definitely one of
- 6:35Speaker 2: my favorites to play live. It's quick ass it's yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 2: it's rocking. So we will probably play Hell in Australia probably.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It's so short that it's like it's easy.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I have to now you've said all that, man,
- 6:47Speaker 4: if you don't plays pointed.
- 6:51Speaker 3: So overall, MA.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Like your sound blends pop punk, that's been R and
- 6:54Speaker 4: B in there, there's Park Brock there some heavier elements.
- 6:57Speaker 4: But on paper that just shouldn't work to be But
- 7:00Speaker 4: how do you guys seem to make it work well?
- 7:02Speaker 3: So how do you find the balance between the genres?
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's a really good question.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I I totally agree with you that on paper itself, realistically,
- 7:14Speaker 2: we we have a pretty fine filter. We have a
- 7:19Speaker 2: we filter out a lot of things that could be
- 7:22Speaker 2: perceived as like corny or like lame or I don't know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: Like I think it's a matter it's a matter of taste.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It's a matter of knowing when to dial it back.
- 7:36Speaker 2: It's a matter of knowing what things just shouldn't be present.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's it's it's a lot of saying no, it's a
- 7:44Speaker 2: lot of like, that's not good enough, we can do better.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's a lot.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Of yeah, it's a lot of instinct and being true
- 7:53Speaker 2: to ourselves because if something feels off, it probably is.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And yeah, we we we've always liked genre blending, but
- 8:02Speaker 2: we've never really loved when it's spoon fed or like
- 8:07Speaker 2: when it's a gimmicky, you know what I mean. There
- 8:11Speaker 2: are exceptions to that, Like there are gimmicks that I
- 8:13Speaker 2: think people have just done a really good job because.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Of who they are, like artists, who they are.
- 8:18Speaker 2: In our case, we would much rather create one cohesive
- 8:22Speaker 2: work that draws a little bit from all these different
- 8:26Speaker 2: pawns and influences as opposed to trying to make music
- 8:30Speaker 2: that sounds like it's supposed to be drawing from all
- 8:32Speaker 2: those things. Right, the home team is the home team
- 8:35Speaker 2: because it drew from those things and created the home team,
- 8:38Speaker 2: not because it set out to create a.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Mash of those things, you know what I mean.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Yeah, if you've had a band support you toward the hite.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Chain, it's funny. We actually a long time ago in
- 8:53Speaker 2: the DIY days when we were going west stores that
- 8:56Speaker 2: nobody came to in Denver. I think it was in
- 8:59Speaker 2: Denver or Salt Lake somewhere like that. There wasn't a
- 9:01Speaker 2: band called the Away Team that we played with. I
- 9:05Speaker 2: don't think they're a band anymore, but.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Well the hard Shave always wait and don't I yeah,
- 9:10Speaker 4: fair enough, So I run somewhere bray that before you
- 9:14Speaker 4: joined the band in twenty fifteen an audition, you're actually
- 9:18Speaker 4: a fan, Like you're the first person to buy their
- 9:20Speaker 4: first EP off band camp.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Like, that's a great story, man, tell us about that.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I was so there.
- 9:25Speaker 2: They're bassist at the time was a friend of mine
- 9:28Speaker 2: and he had just joined. Daniel and John, our current
- 9:33Speaker 2: drummer and guitarist, are the only original members left, and
- 9:39Speaker 2: I remember that the bassis a friend. They released that
- 9:42Speaker 2: song and I was like, oh cool, Alex's new new
- 9:45Speaker 2: band has a song out, and I was listening to.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Us like this is cool, this is either like this
- 9:50Speaker 1: is really good.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Eventually I got connected with Daniel because he did a
- 9:54Speaker 2: lot of like merch printing, and I printed my band's
- 9:56Speaker 2: merch through him. And when they released their EP, he
- 10:00Speaker 2: sent me a message because we had been talking with
- 10:02Speaker 2: like merch stuff. He was like, hey, man, thanks for
- 10:04Speaker 2: buying the EP. I was like, yeah, no problem, absolutely,
- 10:07Speaker 2: I like.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Your guys' music.
- 10:08Speaker 2: So I was listening to it a bunch and eventually
- 10:10Speaker 2: they replaced that singer with a different singer who was
- 10:14Speaker 2: also a friend of mine. The Seattle local heavy scene
- 10:18Speaker 2: was very like everybody kind of.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Knew each other.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And event they did one tour with that second singer,
- 10:25Speaker 2: and the second singer said, you know what, I think
- 10:28Speaker 2: I'm gonna go back to heavy music.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Brian, he hit me up. He's like, I think you
- 10:31Speaker 1: should audition. I was like, I think I'll do that. Nice.
- 10:34Speaker 4: So, like being a fan of the band, you would
- 10:36Speaker 4: have sung the music into shower on the toelet or
- 10:38Speaker 4: whatever before, but when you would have you would had
- 10:40Speaker 4: your Ian Wye singing it a little bit. So when
- 10:42Speaker 4: you went into the audition, did you try to sing
- 10:44Speaker 4: it your way or did you try.
- 10:45Speaker 3: And sing it the way that it was originally?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Dude, it's so funny you say that, because the way
- 10:50Speaker 2: that the previous vocalist I identified with a lot of
- 10:54Speaker 2: his cadences. I like, I heard it, and when I
- 10:58Speaker 2: was singing it like, I was like, our voices are
- 10:59Speaker 2: actually kind of similar. And sometimes when people stumble upon
- 11:02Speaker 2: that EP. We took it off Spotify and all that,
- 11:04Speaker 2: but you could probably find it on the internet somewhere.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Sometimes people think it's me and they're like he sounds
- 11:10Speaker 2: weird here, like he sounds really different.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And it's not me.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But I did identify with his vocal style, and I
- 11:18Speaker 2: could I could kind of imagine myself singing some of
- 11:21Speaker 2: those songs live. In fact, a funny story, there was
- 11:25Speaker 2: one in particular. It was the last song on that
- 11:26Speaker 2: EP that I think was my favorite one, and I
- 11:29Speaker 2: was like, I could really see myself singing of the
- 11:31Speaker 2: song live. When I joined, we never played that song,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but everything else you never played that song.
- 11:39Speaker 3: That's funny. As before I Let you Go, we got
- 11:42Speaker 3: a new segment of starting called photo Bombs.
- 11:44Speaker 4: So basically I've trod three social media before you've got
- 11:47Speaker 4: a chat, I come up with a few photos I
- 11:49Speaker 4: want to know more about. Don't worry you got abum.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I've come across this old Madia like he's having that
- 11:54Speaker 4: much of a good time. No, he's forgotten that someone's
- 11:57Speaker 4: taking the microfight off him.
- 12:00Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 12:00Speaker 2: That was during sound check, I can tell you. That
- 12:02Speaker 2: is in recently in San Antonio on our last US tour.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I believe I wasn't on stage and they were sound
- 12:13Speaker 2: checking for everything, and I think somebody was doing sound
- 12:19Speaker 2: check for me. It obviously wasn't John, but somebody had
- 12:21Speaker 2: gone up to my mind it was probably Ryan.
- 12:23Speaker 1: It was sound checking, and.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I can only imagine that he's doing something related to
- 12:28Speaker 2: that in this.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I wasn't there.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I was I was like backstage waiting and I was like,
- 12:33Speaker 2: oh shoot, I gotta go soundcheck.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You hit it right into it about it and he's
- 12:36Speaker 3: got the eyes, clothes and the time's out. He's loving it.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that's John and the other one on fans got
- 12:42Speaker 4: the same gentleman in it.
- 12:44Speaker 3: But how cool is that guitar strap? Is that?
- 12:48Speaker 1: Like?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Is that just bullets or is it cucodole teeth and
- 12:51Speaker 3: shock taeth in there? Dude?
- 12:53Speaker 2: So that strap is custom made by his friend in
- 12:56Speaker 2: Portland who plays in some death metal bands shout out Viall.
- 13:01Speaker 2: His name's Kyle, and he makes those straps custom made
- 13:04Speaker 2: and they're not cheap because they're very, very very well made.
- 13:08Speaker 2: He's had that one for a long time. I think
- 13:11Speaker 2: this last tour was the last one he's doing on
- 13:12Speaker 2: it because it's just kind of breaking and he's just
- 13:15Speaker 2: played so many tours.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But he's gonna get a new one. He's gonna get
- 13:17Speaker 1: another one.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Anybody ever got ahead off side, like he draw blood
- 13:20Speaker 3: on himself for anyone else?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Wait say it again, has.
- 13:23Speaker 3: It draw blood on himself or anyone else? Want to
- 13:25Speaker 3: site you with that?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Oh no, I don't think they're quite sharp enough to
- 13:28Speaker 2: They're they're pretty sharp, and I if he body checked someone,
- 13:31Speaker 2: he could definitely kill somebody. But but no, Luckily, the
- 13:36Speaker 2: only casualties have been once in a while, his necklace
- 13:40Speaker 2: will go over. I think he stopped wearing this particular necklace.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Kept doing that, but it would go over, catch on
- 13:44Speaker 2: the thing, and then one time I think it broke.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Oh definitely, because costumes would make you throw with it.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, he'd yeah, when we checked, we gotta check that thing.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That thing's come on a plane.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Jeff Yo bra will thanks to play speaking with you.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Home team will be in Australia next month from September
- 14:03Speaker 4: twelfth with May Day Pride and Jackson Mannequin, so heaviest
- 14:07Speaker 4: man on the bill.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Get along and check him out.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Thanks so much,
