- 1:40Speaker 1: don't say that lightly. Twist this here, and I appreciate that.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You're a fucking legend, bro, appreciate it. Hey, man, listen,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I just want to say I've been trying. I feel
- 1:49Speaker 1: like I've been dming you probably for about six months,
- 1:51Speaker 1: trying to be like, yeah when you come to LA man,
- 1:52Speaker 1: like it's been a while. Man, I know, we always
- 1:54Speaker 1: like trying to lock in GLA and then when I
- 1:56Speaker 1: was at the radio station, I mean I've probably been
- 1:58Speaker 1: dming you longer than that because were trying to get
- 1:59Speaker 1: you on the radio station and shit, and yeah, it's
- 2:02Speaker 1: good to have you here though. Bro. Man, man, it's
- 2:04Speaker 1: a hey, better late than never. Run one hundred percent, Man,
- 2:07Speaker 1: hundred percent. You have so much just historical legacy in
- 2:11Speaker 1: the game. Bro. You know what I'm saying, It's been
- 2:15Speaker 1: a long time. Let's started. Like obviously, I remember I
- 2:21Speaker 1: first heard you probably it was probably around like ninety
- 2:26Speaker 1: nine when I was like a kid and you already
- 2:30Speaker 1: you know, moving and shaking. But it was it was
- 2:32Speaker 1: a I think the first song I probably ever heard you,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I really it was probably pop Pemp Yeah, and then
- 2:40Speaker 1: digging into all the other shit, the speeding up mobsters
- 2:42Speaker 1: and all that, you know what I'm saying. So like
- 2:45Speaker 1: during that era in Chicago hip hop, this was before
- 2:48Speaker 1: the drill shit, I felt like it was like what
- 2:51Speaker 1: you were doing a crucial conflict was doing. And then
- 2:54Speaker 1: on the other side of the token, it was like
- 2:57Speaker 1: common sense in the Resurrection and you know, and Solt.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It always just felt like Chicago has always kind of
- 3:02Speaker 1: been two sides sonically at all times. It was like
- 3:07Speaker 1: like south side West side. You know, you have to
- 3:10Speaker 1: you know, shout to the north side too, but you know,
- 3:13Speaker 1: mostly like a south side West side thing, not really
- 3:17Speaker 1: intuit with each other, but just you know, two different
- 3:20Speaker 1: vibes a little bit when it came to music, Yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 1: what what is it that inspired you to wrap the
- 3:27Speaker 1: way you rap originally? Because you you know, I always
- 3:32Speaker 1: have this talk with UH, with the homie rints that
- 3:36Speaker 1: when it comes to the like Tech nine two, we've
- 3:38Speaker 1: we've talked about you a lot when it comes to chopping.
- 3:42Speaker 1: There's nobody who can UH really like you, like when
- 3:47Speaker 1: you wrap, it's so clean. Some people can rap fast,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but it's really hard to understand. Like you enunciate so
- 3:53Speaker 1: perfectly every single like it's it's like, to me, that's
- 3:57Speaker 1: what it's about. That that's that's the limit of it
- 4:00Speaker 1: is how clear can you say your words at a
- 4:05Speaker 1: certain pace or k you know, so to me, that's
- 4:08Speaker 1: what it's about. It's a complete package. And once once
- 4:11Speaker 1: one is over the other one, then you're not really
- 4:15Speaker 1: doing it the right way. But when did you start
- 4:16Speaker 1: to master that, like and what were the influences that
- 4:19Speaker 1: kind of made you decide to start rapping that way?
- 4:21Speaker 1: This was early on just really because I was doing
- 4:24Speaker 1: so many, so many rhymes where I'm having punchlines and
- 4:29Speaker 1: stuff like that, and like more into battles like the
- 4:33Speaker 1: younger stage, you know, and I wanted to sound different,
- 4:37Speaker 1: make something different, make a song, or just a new flow.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So I started like changing up the flow and making
- 4:44Speaker 1: different patterns. And then every once in a while, you were,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know, uh, coming up the street and not be
- 4:49Speaker 1: backing into the beat, and then just a little more,
- 4:53Speaker 1: then a little more, and then you start to hear
- 4:56Speaker 1: a few other rappers doing it here and there, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 1: oh man. And then one day I just decided I
- 5:01Speaker 1: want to make a whole song like that. I'm like,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I always make little phrases like that. Let me make
- 5:06Speaker 1: a whole song like that, you know. And then I
- 5:08Speaker 1: started making songs like mister Tongue Twisters. That's crazy? So
- 5:14Speaker 1: what year? What year was mister tongue twister? Man? A
- 5:17Speaker 1: long time ago, like ninety one or something like that.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Ninety one. That's so crazy. You know, it's crazy too,
- 5:23Speaker 1: because I think it was ninety one. I was, I
- 5:27Speaker 1: was four now. But what's crazy is uh? Like I
- 5:35Speaker 1: remember as a kid like there was like this. I
- 5:41Speaker 1: don't know if it was a bee for weird energy
- 5:43Speaker 1: between you boys in Chicago and the Bone Thugs guys.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Mm hmm. It was kind of like I think they
- 5:49Speaker 1: might have said something on Art of War. Yeah, I
- 5:53Speaker 1: think it was Art of War, right, it was on
- 5:54Speaker 1: that album, like all of the all of the early
- 5:59Speaker 1: early app was that that had that style at some
- 6:03Speaker 1: form or time got out their body a little bit, right, yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 1: because it was like no, you bite me, you bite me?
- 6:11Speaker 1: Well I was doing it first. Yeah, we all got
- 6:14Speaker 1: out of our body a little bit about that type
- 6:16Speaker 1: of stuff. So that was that was early on when
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know, we all were trying to stay claim at
- 6:21Speaker 1: a certain vibe, not realizing that we were all the
- 6:25Speaker 1: founders of a certain sound facts people. You know, once
- 6:29Speaker 1: we started to realize how many people we influenced, then
- 6:33Speaker 1: that's when we realized that we were all brothers in
- 6:36Speaker 1: the sex who who who said something first? Back then,
- 6:39Speaker 1: like who took the first? So you were the first? Okay,
- 6:41Speaker 1: so it was you first? Yeah? Yeah, I think I
- 6:44Speaker 1: kicked it off first. I think I saw a crazy
- 6:46Speaker 1: bone when we was doing a video for Spit Your Game. Okay,
- 6:51Speaker 1: yeah I remember, Yo, that's crazy. Yeah, because years later
- 6:54Speaker 1: you guys end up working on that together. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 1: shout out to crazy. You know, all of them are
- 7:00Speaker 1: eyes though you know, yeah, that's dope. Yeah, that's it's crazy.
- 7:03Speaker 1: As we think about like how rap beef is now,
- 7:05Speaker 1: it's like it's not a lot of mature and getting
- 7:07Speaker 1: PASTI it anymore, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, you know, uh,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and then then there is some you know, so hopefully
- 7:14Speaker 1: hopefully a lot of the younger cats look at the
- 7:17Speaker 1: way we moved a little bit and kind of kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of follow suit. You know, when did you realize that
- 7:23Speaker 1: you had something like because we I think every rapper
- 7:26Speaker 1: has a you know, whether it's back then getting your
- 7:29Speaker 1: demo in the right person's hand, or hearing your record
- 7:31Speaker 1: on the radio, or when was the first instance where
- 7:34Speaker 1: you realize like, oh I could really like make real
- 7:36Speaker 1: money off this rap shit. Man, I probably can't remember
- 7:41Speaker 1: the first. The first probably entering entering h contests back then,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you know, because this was how I first got on.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's like just getting in contests and stuff like that.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So I think it was maybe me and my guy
- 7:58Speaker 1: Creed getting in the show U one day or should
- 8:01Speaker 1: I say, a contest and did a song and got
- 8:04Speaker 1: the opportunity to record them. You know, once people start
- 8:09Speaker 1: paying for stuff, right, once you saw people paid money
- 8:12Speaker 1: for it to see me. Yeah, paid to see a
- 8:14Speaker 1: show or something like that. You know, things like that. Yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 1: that's wild. So you ended up putting out Adrenaline Rush. Uh.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You were kind of like a I don't want to
- 8:27Speaker 1: call you an underground favorite, but you were kind of
- 8:29Speaker 1: like a you had like a dope Colt following and
- 8:33Speaker 1: hip hop. I remember when the Uh Paid in full
- 8:40Speaker 1: soundtrack Slash Rock Rockefeller album came out. It was like
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was like a double disc album, and that was
- 8:47Speaker 1: the first time that I it was the We Are
- 8:50Speaker 1: the Champions record and the way the way Dame brought
- 8:54Speaker 1: you in on that record was so legendary. And you
- 8:59Speaker 1: just came. You caught a fucking body and I think
- 9:01Speaker 1: I might have saw it was like maybe a video
- 9:03Speaker 1: you or something in Chicago getting the Rockefeller chain put
- 9:05Speaker 1: on you. Uh, it wasn't Chicago. It was somewhere. It
- 9:08Speaker 1: was on stage though, right it was on stage, Yeah, yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 1: it was that was that was an a dope vibe
- 9:14Speaker 1: right there. Shout out to the homie. Dang. Yeah. How
- 9:16Speaker 1: did talk about how your relationship with Rockefeller started? Just
- 9:21Speaker 1: early on a little bit of everything. I will say
- 9:25Speaker 1: Kanye Dame and Jay all in some form of fashion
- 9:30Speaker 1: just just had something to do with me being involved
- 9:32Speaker 1: with Rockefeller of course Jay, you know, with him being
- 9:35Speaker 1: who he is and us doing what we did with
- 9:37Speaker 1: like uh you know, uh is that your chick popping tags? Right?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Just like that? And then of course Yay having that
- 9:46Speaker 1: vibe and bring bringing me along in that whole vibe,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and then even with that vibe, but like dang with
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Champions joint. So yeah, it was crazy. Everybody I
- 9:55Speaker 1: was cool with all of that. Was h Did you
- 9:57Speaker 1: have a relationship with Kanye first because of the Chicago
- 9:59Speaker 1: share or did you It's not really like have a relationship,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but before he became Kanye West per se, he was
- 10:05Speaker 1: already cool. He was already cool. Yeah. Yeah, we didn't
- 10:08Speaker 1: kick it a lot or nothing like that, but we
- 10:10Speaker 1: always was around each other, especially on the music scene,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know in Chicago. So so yeah, yeah, it's crazy
- 10:18Speaker 1: because you mentioned is that your chicken and popping tags?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Those are some crazy joints, crazy features. Is that your
- 10:24Speaker 1: chick is Like I think that's one of those records
- 10:26Speaker 1: that it's forgotten it hip hop, you know what I'm saying,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Like we forgot rocking that joint. That joint is fucking
- 10:33Speaker 1: That ship is a classic, man, that's my joint. That's
- 10:37Speaker 1: the I think it's the hardest Memphis Bleak record. That ship. Okay,
- 10:40Speaker 1: shout out, I mean shout out to Bleak, but that's
- 10:43Speaker 1: shout out to the homie Bleak. So who So originally,
- 10:48Speaker 1: what made you decide to go to rock? I mean,
- 10:50Speaker 1: obviously at the time, it probably wasn't hard to make
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Rockefeller decision because it's the hardest crew and hip
- 10:54Speaker 1: hop at the moment, right, Yeah, yeah, we was rocking. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I was loving it. You know, that whole vibe. To
- 10:59Speaker 1: be around that team at that time period was definitely
- 11:02Speaker 1: a plus, you know, and then to be vibing with
- 11:06Speaker 1: him was a whole other thing. So so it was cool.
- 11:09Speaker 1: What was give me like a Rockefeller story, man, one
- 11:12Speaker 1: that like just being being around that era, being around
- 11:14Speaker 1: Hole during that time something that we like people might
- 11:16Speaker 1: not know, just like a crazy experience that you had
- 11:19Speaker 1: back then. Just always weirded out at Jay's prediction ability,
- 11:27Speaker 1: how he would look up and say, you know that
- 11:30Speaker 1: slow Jams was gonna be a hit, and then it
- 11:32Speaker 1: would it would happen. And then like me writing Is
- 11:36Speaker 1: This the End? That song with P Diddy? And when
- 11:40Speaker 1: I did that song and walking in the room with
- 11:43Speaker 1: Jay and P Diddy chopping it up and we were talking.
- 11:46Speaker 1: We started talking about the is this the End joint?
- 11:49Speaker 1: And I remember how how I was doing that joint.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I was faded writing that joint, you know, so like
- 11:55Speaker 1: real faded, and I had some good weed that I
- 11:58Speaker 1: never had before. So I wrote that joint and everything.
- 12:01Speaker 1: So we was in there talking about it and was
- 12:02Speaker 1: looking at it, and he just looked at it. He
- 12:04Speaker 1: was he was high when you wrote that, So it
- 12:07Speaker 1: was just but it was strange because I was real
- 12:10Speaker 1: high when I wrote that, so for some reason about
- 12:13Speaker 1: the flow, he knew I was high. The Origin of
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Slow Jams is a record that I distinctly remember,
- 12:20Speaker 1: like being in high school and and that being like
- 12:23Speaker 1: my favorite record. You know, that was a record that
- 12:25Speaker 1: was it was early Kanye as far as you know,
- 12:29Speaker 1: that was like one of Kanye's early earliest records. I
- 12:33Speaker 1: feel like it was like through the Wire and then
- 12:35Speaker 1: that came and and that just kind of added to
- 12:37Speaker 1: his allure and that was really that was really like,
- 12:40Speaker 1: was that like your first hit record? As far as
- 12:41Speaker 1: like radio like solo radio level. Yeah, yeah, that was.
- 12:45Speaker 1: That was like the biggest record of my career, hands down.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Overnight Celebrity was nice too, though, Man, that was that
- 12:52Speaker 1: was the joint, you know, that was something to have
- 12:54Speaker 1: to come with. Yeah, the whole the vibe of that,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you know. So I got lucky being able to come
- 13:00Speaker 1: with that one and him going as hard on the
- 13:03Speaker 1: beat as he was able. It was crazy. Now, but
- 13:05Speaker 1: Slow Jams tell us about that record? How was it made?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Like what were the origins of that record? Like, like
- 13:10Speaker 1: like Slow Jams was something that was a vibe that
- 13:13Speaker 1: U Yay already had. He already just just had the
- 13:17Speaker 1: whole aura of it. He had the beat, He had
- 13:20Speaker 1: an idea of what he wanted me to do, so
- 13:23Speaker 1: you know, me obviously knowing what I'm hearing is like
- 13:26Speaker 1: like dope as hell, you know, not not knowing it
- 13:29Speaker 1: was gonna beat that fucking beat, but I'm I'm like, man,
- 13:31Speaker 1: I gotta body this, so I'm doing my thing on it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: But then he put Jamie on it and the way
- 13:36Speaker 1: it all came together and that was like right, that
- 13:39Speaker 1: was like peak Jamie as an artist too, or really
- 13:42Speaker 1: I feel like that is what really kind of kicked
- 13:44Speaker 1: off people taking Jamie serious as a singer. It was
- 13:47Speaker 1: that song. That song was because that was before Unpredictable,
- 13:51Speaker 1: that was before that his album. That was like the
- 13:54Speaker 1: very first time that we were like, oh Jamie Fox
- 13:57Speaker 1: could sing. Yeah, That's what turned it on to me
- 13:59Speaker 1: for us music career. He always was talented to of course,
- 14:03Speaker 1: of course that record coming out like turned it on
- 14:06Speaker 1: and launched that opportunity. And you say, Jay called that
- 14:09Speaker 1: record he knew it was gonna be a hit when
- 14:14Speaker 1: you were around Yay early did did? Did he? I mean,
- 14:16Speaker 1: because I always tell people who aren't like real hardcore
- 14:19Speaker 1: Kanye fans, is Kanye has always been oh you some
- 14:23Speaker 1: water something? Is there some water in there? I always
- 14:28Speaker 1: tell people who haven't followed Kanye West until recently over
- 14:31Speaker 1: the last ten years that, like, Kanye has always been
- 14:33Speaker 1: a very confident dude. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I don't think I mean, it's obviously magnified a lot,
- 14:40Speaker 1: you know, but I feel like Kanye has always kind
- 14:42Speaker 1: of been a mad scientist. Yeah, yeah, for sure, mad scientists, right, Yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Like working with him, because you were working with him
- 14:56Speaker 1: that was before college dropout right, Yeah, that was before
- 14:59Speaker 1: Slow James was BEFO calls dropout for that released. You know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I already had a vibe of of how he worked
- 15:05Speaker 1: and and and just what he do because I was
- 15:08Speaker 1: around him when he was making beats early on, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 1: so I was I would always know that his sound
- 15:14Speaker 1: was very unique. His choice of music was like a
- 15:19Speaker 1: like a DJ, almost like a you know, it felt
- 15:22Speaker 1: like a DJ. I was like, man, he knows the records.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You So, yeah, he was always dope to talk about
- 15:29Speaker 1: to Cameron. So Cam has always paid homage to the
- 15:32Speaker 1: shy he used to live there. Yeah, he on Purple Haze,
- 15:37Speaker 1: he re redid adrenaline Rush and you you caught a
- 15:40Speaker 1: fucking body on that. What is it about Cam in Chicago?
- 15:44Speaker 1: And like just the homage and the and the respect
- 15:47Speaker 1: he's always shown. Man, it's it's been I mean, it's
- 15:48Speaker 1: been dope to see over the over the last however
- 15:50Speaker 1: many years. I just feel like, you know, it's an
- 15:53Speaker 1: old saying where they say real recognized real, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 1: and I just think, uh, you know, the vibes really
- 16:00Speaker 1: you know, like like like where he from and how
- 16:03Speaker 1: he get down and shot town people and how they
- 16:06Speaker 1: get down. And then just cam being a person that
- 16:08Speaker 1: moved around though he was in Ohio at one point,
- 16:11Speaker 1: chilling doing his thing too, like Chicago as well as
- 16:14Speaker 1: other places. So him being a fan of my music
- 16:18Speaker 1: as well me being a fan of his music. It
- 16:21Speaker 1: was real dope when he came because he was in
- 16:23Speaker 1: Chicago and we actually sat right there in each other's
- 16:26Speaker 1: face and talked about doing that record. So he did
- 16:29Speaker 1: he come to you? And when he when he came
- 16:31Speaker 1: to you, was he like, y'all, I want to remake
- 16:34Speaker 1: this for purple Hats. Yeah, he had a mastermind already.
- 16:36Speaker 1: He knew exactly what the fuck you wanted. Yeah, So
- 16:39Speaker 1: that's what made the record so fun, was because he
- 16:41Speaker 1: knew exactly how he wanted. That's wild, yo. Let me
- 16:45Speaker 1: ask you this. With Kamakazi being a classic record, right,
- 16:50Speaker 1: that was your only album on Rockefeller, I didn't actually
- 16:54Speaker 1: have an album, so that album wasn't So what was
- 16:57Speaker 1: your situation with him because you had to ain't on
- 17:00Speaker 1: you had the features you know that it was it
- 17:03Speaker 1: was It was pretty much more like a family vibe. Okay, okay, okay,
- 17:08Speaker 1: that we could have took further, but at the time.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I was on Atlantic Records, right, I knew that album
- 17:13Speaker 1: came out through Atlantic. I didn't know Rock, so it didn't.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So you technically never dropped an album album through Rockefeller. Damn,
- 17:22Speaker 1: that's crazy. So that was just some family ties ship,
- 17:25Speaker 1: like hey, you're part of the gang. Here's the change,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Like, definitely, that was far
- 17:30Speaker 1: as far as we could take it. We would have
- 17:31Speaker 1: took it further if if the companies could have merged
- 17:34Speaker 1: the situation. But you know, unfortunately that couldn't happen. So
- 17:38Speaker 1: I had to keep it moving, keep it moving. Who
- 17:42Speaker 1: is who were you closest with on the roster because
- 17:44Speaker 1: there was such a large roster of artists. But you know,
- 17:47Speaker 1: we're talking about the young guns. Were talking about all
- 17:49Speaker 1: the state property beans Memphis, Like who was like your
- 17:52Speaker 1: your your closest comrade on the Rockefeller roster. Everybody was cool.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I had a vibe with everybody. I probably kicked it
- 17:59Speaker 1: the most with with a bleak and Freeway. Freeway is
- 18:03Speaker 1: a good dude man. Probably kicked it with the most
- 18:06Speaker 1: shouts to free It's crazy to see the evolution of
- 18:11Speaker 1: what you got started in the nineties with chopping and
- 18:15Speaker 1: and and and rapping that way. There's so many dope
- 18:19Speaker 1: artists who do it. Now, the you know, the logics
- 18:23Speaker 1: of the world. We mentioned Rits. You know, obviously tech
- 18:26Speaker 1: nines are o G text tech and getting that bag.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Who are some artists that that you respect what they
- 18:32Speaker 1: do when it comes to chopping like that? Damn? Who
- 18:38Speaker 1: was that I was talking about the day? Damn? Oh man,
- 18:48Speaker 1: you caught me up on that one too. It's I
- 18:50Speaker 1: want to remember so hard. I can't remember the name
- 18:53Speaker 1: of the group though, but definitely the people who you
- 18:56Speaker 1: name and are still people who I listened to, like
- 18:58Speaker 1: like Rits and stuff like that. Now, Hey, by the way,
- 19:01Speaker 1: rit Riz, you and Rich ever talk about doing the
- 19:04Speaker 1: EP together? Yeah, okay, okay, okay, because he's he's mentioned
- 19:07Speaker 1: that too, Yes, my boy. So he mentioned it that
- 19:09Speaker 1: in passing and I was like, hey, you that'd be crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:13Speaker 1: we we mentioned it. It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen.
- 19:16Speaker 1: We're gonna be in the right space at the right time.
- 19:18Speaker 1: He's also another one of those guys that raps very fast,
- 19:21Speaker 1: but like enunciates his words so where it's just like
- 19:25Speaker 1: if you're listening. You understand every single thing he's saying. Yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you know, like you some some some people got a
- 19:32Speaker 1: funk zoned with it, and then some people, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 1: they just do it. You know, you gotta have a
- 19:36Speaker 1: funk zone with it. You know. I want to talk. So,
- 19:39Speaker 1: so your boy had set me some talking points and
- 19:42Speaker 1: I had no idea that you a group that that
- 19:47Speaker 1: that it'll come to me. Okay, Okay, So I didn't
- 19:50Speaker 1: know that you are a concealed gun carry instructor. Yeahal carrier,
- 19:56Speaker 1: so official certified us c c A and n R
- 19:59Speaker 1: A cance Carry instructor. Yeah, and you started a new
- 20:02Speaker 1: gun safety company called the Gun Camp. This is in Chicago. Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 1: So I'm because I'm I'm a proponent. I'm a pretty
- 20:10Speaker 1: liberal dude, but I'm very very you know, I feel
- 20:12Speaker 1: like we should all have a right to protect ourselves.
- 20:14Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. How did you get involved
- 20:18Speaker 1: in in that? Because I would never in my wildest
- 20:20Speaker 1: dreams picture you know, man, Like, I've always been into firearms.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But then when I got my concealed carry, my boy
- 20:28Speaker 1: Eddie trained me to get my concealed carry license. And
- 20:31Speaker 1: then when I wanted to be an instructor. My boy
- 20:33Speaker 1: Creative Can trained me. Uh my Creative trained me to
- 20:37Speaker 1: be a concealed carry instructor really during that whole quarantine,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know. So I think a lot of us got
- 20:45Speaker 1: an extra career in the quarantine around that quarantine thing.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So you know what happened with me was I got
- 20:52Speaker 1: into that whole industry very heavy, you know, and became
- 20:55Speaker 1: an instructor and just you know, just been going after
- 20:58Speaker 1: a lot of certifications, being a few extra ones, you know.
- 21:02Speaker 1: So that's something I'm into heavy. I'm an advocate for
- 21:06Speaker 1: Second Amendment. Yeah, definitely. I want to. I want to
- 21:10Speaker 1: teach people the right way when it comes to course
- 21:13Speaker 1: guns and guns safety and yeah, just that people's thought
- 21:17Speaker 1: process about guns. Yeah. I think that sometimes in hip
- 21:20Speaker 1: hop we get like a little like wrapped up in like, uh,
- 21:24Speaker 1: whatever the popular issue is at the time. And you know,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I always talk with Killer Mike about this because Killer
- 21:31Speaker 1: Mike's also very pro Second Amendment. He's gotten a lot
- 21:34Speaker 1: of ship for that, by the way, Like they came
- 21:36Speaker 1: came for him a lot. But I think that, uh,
- 21:39Speaker 1: you know, especially in La No, they've came for Mike
- 21:44Speaker 1: a lot. I know, that and it's it's wild. It's
- 21:48Speaker 1: like it doesn't make any sense. And you know, I
- 21:50Speaker 1: think that he would always say, like our people more
- 21:54Speaker 1: than anybody. We need to protect ourselves more than anybody,
- 21:57Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, especially with what we're going
- 21:59Speaker 1: on in the world the last you know, with this
- 22:01Speaker 1: Trump ship and all this other wild ship, like you
- 22:03Speaker 1: never know, but it's never know what can happen. Like
- 22:06Speaker 1: we live in I live in California, and it's like
- 22:08Speaker 1: out here they pretty much make it as impossible as
- 22:11Speaker 1: possible for you to protect yourself. So it's like out here,
- 22:16Speaker 1: motherfuckers is getting robbed ships. I'm from Phoenix though, Phoenix
- 22:22Speaker 1: is anybody can have a gun, Yeah, but you can't
- 22:26Speaker 1: have a negligent discharge in Phoenix, right what you mean?
- 22:31Speaker 1: I think in Arizona, if you have a negligent discharge,
- 22:34Speaker 1: it's a little rough, you know, if you just fire
- 22:35Speaker 1: the gun with that Yeah, with that type of I
- 22:38Speaker 1: just know that. I know they're like I could literally
- 22:42Speaker 1: give you my gun and that's you. It's your gun now.
- 22:45Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about registering it. You don't
- 22:47Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like cats is really it's the
- 22:49Speaker 1: wild wild We No, I'm sure, I'm sure. Right two cars,
- 22:53Speaker 1: I was gonna says, it's like two sides of the coin.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Because if we think of Chicago and the gun violence
- 22:57Speaker 1: in Chicago, right, like you know, I see people are
- 23:01Speaker 1: gonna get guns no matter what. Right that That pretty
- 23:05Speaker 1: much says it, like, like, no matter how the gun
- 23:08Speaker 1: laws are different in the state, you still got violence. Yeah.
- 23:12Speaker 1: And the people who are who want those guns, who
- 23:14Speaker 1: are committing those crimes, they're gonna get those guns no
- 23:16Speaker 1: matter get no matter what. So why not be protected
- 23:21Speaker 1: like legally obviously you know what I'm saying. What they say,
- 23:25Speaker 1: the only thing that stops a bad guy with a
- 23:27Speaker 1: gun is a good guy with a gun. Ain't that
- 23:29Speaker 1: the truth? Ain't that the truth? Yeah, it's a very
- 23:33Speaker 1: It's just I just think, you know, it's interesting, Like
- 23:35Speaker 1: I think more more people like yourself and Mike should like,
- 23:38Speaker 1: you know, I think it's dope that you guys talk
- 23:41Speaker 1: about that because in hip hop, you know, and I'm,
- 23:43Speaker 1: like I said, I'm pretty much liberal on most things,
- 23:48Speaker 1: just the gun ship. I'm like, listen, man, like this
- 23:51Speaker 1: was America for a reason. It's it's in the constitution
- 23:57Speaker 1: that we could protect ourselves, you know what I mean?
- 24:00Speaker 1: And it is what it is. And you know a
- 24:02Speaker 1: lot of times we you know, we are conditioned to
- 24:05Speaker 1: have a perception of guns that make you go. You know,
- 24:10Speaker 1: well everybody else is going. So your your thing is
- 24:13Speaker 1: is to try to just educate people like yo, like
- 24:15Speaker 1: this is you know, because because guns a scary thing,
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So when you do these courses,
- 24:21Speaker 1: you're teaching people about the weapon. You're teaching people how
- 24:23Speaker 1: to take it apart, put it back, Like what are
- 24:25Speaker 1: you teaching people? Yeah, we're teaching all of that. We're
- 24:27Speaker 1: teaching people how to break a gun down, put it
- 24:30Speaker 1: back together, like you know, a field strip so you
- 24:32Speaker 1: can clean it and everything, the parts to a gun,
- 24:35Speaker 1: how to hold a gun, proper stance, proper grip, the
- 24:40Speaker 1: safety rules, you know, how to keep your finger off
- 24:43Speaker 1: the trigger, you know how to make sure you don't
- 24:45Speaker 1: muzzle anybody, the whole everything. So so not only just
- 24:49Speaker 1: the mentality of having a gun, but how to properly
- 24:52Speaker 1: uh care for a gun and handle it with safety. Right,
- 24:57Speaker 1: So you said during the during the pandemic, you pick
- 24:59Speaker 1: that up because I know you do a lot of
- 25:01Speaker 1: live shows like I know that you like under normal,
- 25:05Speaker 1: normal circumstances, you do a bunch of live shows every year.
- 25:08Speaker 1: How many live shows would you say you do year?
- 25:11Speaker 1: I don't know that's a question for somebody else. A lot,
- 25:15Speaker 1: but a lot, yeah, because I know you're in Phoenix
- 25:17Speaker 1: a lot. You know how many Justice books you're out there?
- 25:19Speaker 1: Shout out to Justice? But but uh, what did you
- 25:24Speaker 1: like like outside of learning this new this new trade?
- 25:27Speaker 1: What how did Holse did you handle the pandemic? Because
- 25:29Speaker 1: the ship was kind of you know, at first, it
- 25:32Speaker 1: was kind of like, I feel like the first couple
- 25:35Speaker 1: of months it felt like, oh well I could work
- 25:38Speaker 1: from home. I feel like I threw a lot. I
- 25:41Speaker 1: drew a lot of portraits and stuff like that. You
- 25:44Speaker 1: know really Yeah, that was actually the first thing that
- 25:47Speaker 1: I did as a kid. So you were always a
- 25:49Speaker 1: good artist. First talent that popped out was me drawing. Yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 1: so you was whipping up some portraits during the pandemic. Yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 1: you know, did you watch the Tiger what's the guy's name,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Tiger King? Did you watch Tiger King on Netflix? Oh?
- 26:04Speaker 1: You didn't watch that? You heard of that? Though I
- 26:07Speaker 1: heard of it. I ain't sitting on. It didn't grab me.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I wasn't. You know, it wasn't a time frame where
- 26:14Speaker 1: it grabbed me enough to say, let me watch. What
- 26:17Speaker 1: are your thoughts on on you know, Chicago's music seeing
- 26:22Speaker 1: the last eight years, nine years with the drill ship
- 26:25Speaker 1: because the drill the drill, So when it first came
- 26:29Speaker 1: out for me, I really wasn't because I'm like, I
- 26:32Speaker 1: love the lyrical ship, you know what I mean, Like
- 26:34Speaker 1: it was just it was, it wasn't for me. I
- 26:38Speaker 1: mean I loved it. You know, a lot of people
- 26:40Speaker 1: have different different perceptions of music at different times. So
- 26:44Speaker 1: at that time, me listening to the music, it's a
- 26:47Speaker 1: lot of different reasons. Like you could listen to some
- 26:50Speaker 1: of the drill music and you will see, like damn,
- 26:53Speaker 1: from a DJ perspective, adrenaline rush fits right on top
- 26:55Speaker 1: of it, right right, yeah, yeah, So definitely I'm locked
- 26:59Speaker 1: in from that perspective. Then I saw too as technology
- 27:04Speaker 1: advanced and people got a chance to open their laptops
- 27:08Speaker 1: and see how Chicago really was from a Chief Keith perspective,
- 27:12Speaker 1: and little Dirk and all of these guys right here
- 27:15Speaker 1: that's coming up doing anything and you're like, wow, you know,
- 27:18Speaker 1: so now you got something new that you never saw
- 27:21Speaker 1: that and now we got another element added on to
- 27:24Speaker 1: hip hop with this old drill ol vibe and it
- 27:27Speaker 1: and it kind of shifted the way everybody is doing
- 27:30Speaker 1: their music. So because you know, like, not only was
- 27:34Speaker 1: I waiting on Chicago to just come with that constant
- 27:37Speaker 1: quality music, man, once they started lighting it up, man,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, I feel like whatever you want
- 27:45Speaker 1: to say. Man, Like all has influenced everything going on
- 27:48Speaker 1: right now. Like we just were in New York interviewing
- 27:50Speaker 1: all the Brooklyn Drill rappers and it was like all
- 27:54Speaker 1: of them are just straight. Yo. I grew up listening
- 27:56Speaker 1: to Chief Keith and Dirk and g Herbo and yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 1: and all those guys too, like shout out to Dirk,
- 28:03Speaker 1: shout out to g Herbo. Like those guys have evolved
- 28:06Speaker 1: musically too, that's right. Yeah, and their talents have young bulls.
- 28:10Speaker 1: They be killing it. Man, I love it. You love it?
- 28:14Speaker 1: What else out of Chicago or you check? Because you know,
- 28:17Speaker 1: like I said, there's the other side of Chicago. You
- 28:18Speaker 1: know there's guys like Vic Mensa. I mean, obviously Chance
- 28:21Speaker 1: has been on quite a run since about twenty thirteen.
- 28:24Speaker 1: You like like, yeah, Vic Spencer too. Is a guy
- 28:26Speaker 1: named Vic Spencer and Chicago to be killing it to really?
- 28:30Speaker 1: Oh Vic Spencer, I think you said Vic Spencer, like
- 28:32Speaker 1: Vic Spencer, no, the Chicago slang Vic Spencer. Yeah, Yo,
- 28:37Speaker 1: what's going on with uh? With the Crucial Conflict guys? Man,
- 28:40Speaker 1: the last time I heard I heard ah, I want
- 28:44Speaker 1: to say it was was a Wild Style or or
- 28:47Speaker 1: one of them dudes was on vic Mensa was a
- 28:50Speaker 1: part of a group called the Kids These Days and
- 28:54Speaker 1: the and they redid Hey okay, and I think the
- 28:58Speaker 1: dude was on and I was like, yo, I used
- 28:59Speaker 1: to love the Final Tick. They still do show Final
- 29:02Speaker 1: Tick was my ship. Yeah, and they still perform those records. Man,
- 29:06Speaker 1: you you you definitely need to check out a Crucial
- 29:09Speaker 1: Conflict show. One of the guy's names is wild Style
- 29:11Speaker 1: was one of his names? Was it never? Yeh Never?
- 29:14Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember if I remember Wild Style Never?
- 29:16Speaker 1: Cold Hart and Co. Yeah, that ship and that showdown record. Yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 1: that was to tell you that album was a Crucial
- 29:27Speaker 1: Conflict you did. What's up with the Do or Die? Guys?
- 29:31Speaker 1: Still doing shows, still doing their games. I do a
- 29:33Speaker 1: lot of records with them. You know what would you
- 29:36Speaker 1: like like like you know, because because uh, there was
- 29:39Speaker 1: definitely a vibe about that music y'all were making, Like,
- 29:43Speaker 1: uh it was some because you know, we think of
- 29:45Speaker 1: Chicago and I remember as a kid seeing the documentary,
- 29:49Speaker 1: like getting the documentary from Blockbuster that I forget which
- 29:52Speaker 1: pimpin documentary was, but you remember they was doing pimping
- 29:54Speaker 1: documentaries in the nineties. Yeah, And I remember Ice T
- 29:58Speaker 1: went to the Player's Ball in Chicago go and there
- 30:01Speaker 1: was like all kinds of famous pimps. There was like
- 30:05Speaker 1: mister White. I can't even remember all the pimps in
- 30:07Speaker 1: this movie, but Chicago's known for pimping for that culture,
- 30:11Speaker 1: right yeah. Yeah, and that vibe and that player Ship
- 30:15Speaker 1: record got made. Yeah, and I felt like that some
- 30:18Speaker 1: of those records were just they kind of just fit
- 30:20Speaker 1: that vibe and it was something it was like it's
- 30:23Speaker 1: like it almost was like a real Midwest Like at
- 30:27Speaker 1: the time, there was West Coast, there was East Coast,
- 30:29Speaker 1: and like like that was like to me, like what
- 30:31Speaker 1: I what I kind of computed as like Midwest ship. Yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 1: I mean it was everywhere though. You you you definitely had it,
- 30:37Speaker 1: you know out this way, you know, a lot of
- 30:40Speaker 1: the Bay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but but so I just
- 30:43Speaker 1: feel like when you when you input that vibe in
- 30:48Speaker 1: a certain place, I think it's just the aura, you know,
- 30:52Speaker 1: the aura the swag of the whole pimp culture, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 1: more so than anything, just would affect the music and
- 30:59Speaker 1: the certain way, you know. One hundred. You got a
- 31:03Speaker 1: new project coming out for twenty Yeah, a joint project.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Yeah for twenty you know, like when you were speaking
- 31:10Speaker 1: of the young bulls in Chicago, definitely years. We can
- 31:14Speaker 1: talk about it. Man, we want to go grab him.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You're doing a joint album. It's my man, Relo. He
- 31:21Speaker 1: got some dope music. You know, in Chicago, we'd be
- 31:24Speaker 1: doing our thing. He'd be doing this thing in the studio.
- 31:28Speaker 1: You know, he's been working in my studio for a
- 31:30Speaker 1: long time, and uh, Relo' he'd be coming with it
- 31:35Speaker 1: all right. So for twenty what's what's the name of
- 31:39Speaker 1: the album? Man? The news and that news or nothing
- 31:42Speaker 1: news and nine? And how long have you guys been
- 31:45Speaker 1: making music together? He's been how long you've been working
- 31:50Speaker 1: like two years? Okay, you I gotta figure this out
- 31:54Speaker 1: because this guy's you've you've killed so many rappers on
- 31:57Speaker 1: so many songs. It's like embarrassing, like you got you
- 32:01Speaker 1: gotta hit list of guys you just put under the
- 32:03Speaker 1: dirt on their own records. You know what I'm saying,
- 32:05Speaker 1: How it's never that man, but it is, it's not
- 32:08Speaker 1: It might not be that on purpose. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you pick up I pick up the energy of the
- 32:15Speaker 1: of the artists I'm working with. I'm always excited about
- 32:18Speaker 1: the music and I always try to try to please.
- 32:20Speaker 1: So you yeah, what kind of pressure is it hopping
- 32:23Speaker 1: on a record with this guy or doing a whole
- 32:25Speaker 1: album blood alone. It's a lot of pressure. But you know,
- 32:28Speaker 1: I create, so I make sure the music ain one.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Everything gotta be up the part. You know. It's like
- 32:34Speaker 1: you say, definitely a legend. So I step in the
- 32:36Speaker 1: booth gonna make sure I gotta have everything in order.
- 32:40Speaker 1: And then plus you know, see you might not be
- 32:42Speaker 1: be into his music as of yet, but once you
- 32:45Speaker 1: get into his music and see how you know, how
- 32:49Speaker 1: artistic and prolific he is with it, you will see
- 32:52Speaker 1: it's not a problem for him to get on the record,
- 32:54Speaker 1: if anything. In some In some ways it's reverse a
- 32:58Speaker 1: lot of times because remember I'm I'm from a certain era,
- 33:02Speaker 1: and I have to stay relevant and keep up. And
- 33:05Speaker 1: if I don't stay fresh and youthful thinking, then I
- 33:08Speaker 1: can't mesh into that whole vibe. Right So, if anything,
- 33:12Speaker 1: I'm hearing fabulous, fabulous music when I come into the
- 33:15Speaker 1: studio every day. So when I get off of the
- 33:17Speaker 1: opportunity to get on it, I got to make sure
- 33:19Speaker 1: that when I'm on it, I ain't coming with something
- 33:21Speaker 1: that's like, man, you got Musha sound and old as hello.
- 33:26Speaker 1: You get what I'm saying. So, if anything, I gotta
- 33:29Speaker 1: kill it and have that same mentality just as much
- 33:32Speaker 1: as he might. How many records it's on this projects?
- 33:34Speaker 1: Five records on that? Okay? So five piece nice? Still
- 33:37Speaker 1: five people? Are you from Chicago as well? South Side? Okay?
- 33:42Speaker 1: How would you say you described like you describe where
- 33:44Speaker 1: you fit into, like like the Chicago sound right now? Basically,
- 33:48Speaker 1: I'm just gonna usher in a new sound because, like
- 33:50Speaker 1: you say, it's a whole bunch of drill rappers. But
- 33:53Speaker 1: I'm coming. I'm telling the shorties to stay positive, create,
- 33:57Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, dream and chase their gold.
- 33:59Speaker 1: So we trying to step outside of the drill and
- 34:01Speaker 1: just give them the real dig for show that's I
- 34:05Speaker 1: mean ship City for like that Birth Common and Hey,
- 34:10Speaker 1: I want to just acknowledge some of the most influential
- 34:13Speaker 1: guys that don't get love the cool kids. Shout out
- 34:16Speaker 1: to Chicago's on the cool Man, Shout out to Uck English,
- 34:20Speaker 1: Michael Rocks, you know those guys. Those guys have influenced
- 34:24Speaker 1: so much when it came to fashion and sonics and music,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and they they really get their credit, you know what
- 34:28Speaker 1: I'm saying. So those guys that are super legends, man,
- 34:31Speaker 1: So shout out to the cool kids much love. So
- 34:34Speaker 1: the album comes out on the twentieth. Yeah, that makes sense. Man.
- 34:41Speaker 1: It's a holiday holiday definitely a holiday Yeah, and it's
- 34:45Speaker 1: a dope record. You're gonna like it. You're gonna be surprised.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Any features Yeah yeah, yeah, the one two punch Man.
- 34:53Speaker 1: You're gonna be surprised. You're gonna enjoy it. You're gonna
- 34:55Speaker 1: be like, oh man, all right, well yo ghost, go
- 34:58Speaker 1: go get that. And then are you working on any
- 35:01Speaker 1: any more solo? Shiit Twists? Yeah? After that, we got
- 35:04Speaker 1: I got a project solo that's gonna be called shoot
- 35:06Speaker 1: a Ready, Shoot a Ready, shoot a Ready. Yeah, so
- 35:10Speaker 1: that how many records are you on that it's pretty
- 35:13Speaker 1: much done. I probably got like one record to do
- 35:15Speaker 1: just because you know, and it's like a combination. It's
- 35:19Speaker 1: it's flat out my original sound, but it's a combination
- 35:23Speaker 1: of what you would normally hear me do musically, me
- 35:26Speaker 1: attacking and beats and music. And then you got me.
- 35:30Speaker 1: You got me doing music from the perspective talking about
- 35:34Speaker 1: guns from a perspective that you've never heard. You used
- 35:37Speaker 1: to rah rah gun ship, but I'm talking about guns
- 35:41Speaker 1: from a perspective you never heard before. So you're talking
- 35:44Speaker 1: about guns from the perspective of a guy who teaches
- 35:46Speaker 1: a gun course. Now, not that it ain't that simple,
- 35:53Speaker 1: right right, right, right right, you know, but when you
- 35:55Speaker 1: know you ain't gonna hear me say clip, you gonna
- 35:57Speaker 1: hear me say magazine. Okay, you know, but it's dope,
- 36:01Speaker 1: you're gonna hear it. Uh. Talk about what you're doing
- 36:04Speaker 1: with the real estate ship right now, because I think
- 36:08Speaker 1: the real estate market is I don't know how it
- 36:10Speaker 1: is in Chicago, but I don't know everywhere else. It's
- 36:12Speaker 1: crazy right now? Yeah, I mean, is that something that
- 36:15Speaker 1: you've been investing in it for a while Yeah, I mean,
- 36:18Speaker 1: we definitely dabble in that area too. You know, I
- 36:21Speaker 1: try to have my hands and a few things. Right now.
- 36:24Speaker 1: They say, if you ain't got your hands in about
- 36:26Speaker 1: five if you ain't got income coming from like five
- 36:29Speaker 1: different sources, then you you lacking, you know, So we
- 36:32Speaker 1: definitely try to keep busy and things like real estate.
- 36:36Speaker 1: You know, what I do with the music, what I
- 36:38Speaker 1: do as far as the gun life, a bunch of things.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Has there ever been any talks because we got the
- 36:48Speaker 1: bad Boy Reunion tour, which was legendary, Yeah, there's been,
- 36:55Speaker 1: you know, so many dope, like it's kind of Has
- 36:58Speaker 1: there ever been anything kicked around about doing any sort
- 37:01Speaker 1: of like Rockefeller Reunion tour or show or anything like that.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I mean, I know that Dame Jay relationship is obviously
- 37:09Speaker 1: what it is. I don't know, but if they do it,
- 37:13Speaker 1: I gotta jump down. And if they do another Bad
- 37:16Speaker 1: Boy too, I'm gonna have to send a clip of
- 37:18Speaker 1: me doing is this the end of the Diddy so
- 37:20Speaker 1: he can see, like, damn, twist this ship like yesterday,
- 37:24Speaker 1: so he can be like, come on in, come on,
- 37:27Speaker 1: you still got your Rockefeller Jane. Of course, that's something
- 37:31Speaker 1: that like, that's like history, man. Yeah, I need to
- 37:34Speaker 1: bust it out of the show or someone day or
- 37:37Speaker 1: an occasion, you know, a great moment or something. Bust
- 37:40Speaker 1: it out. Who actually, Like, do you remember the actual
- 37:43Speaker 1: show where you got to change? Because I remember seeing it.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I just don't remember, like like you said, it wasn't
- 37:47Speaker 1: in Chicago. But what was the actual remember the actual
- 37:50Speaker 1: place I was? I can't remember, but I remember how
- 37:54Speaker 1: the stage looked and everything, when Dang walked on stage,
- 37:57Speaker 1: how he gave it to me, the whole presentation thing,
- 38:00Speaker 1: so I was real good. Do you think Dame gets
- 38:03Speaker 1: it's like misunderstood sometimes because I feel like Dame's I
- 38:06Speaker 1: feel like he's I feel like when I when I
- 38:08Speaker 1: hear him talk, I understand what he's trying to say.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I just think sometimes he says it in a way
- 38:13Speaker 1: that might be off footing to certain people, a little
- 38:18Speaker 1: too rough, but I understand what he's saying. I always
- 38:20Speaker 1: understand what he's saying. Like he's never really wrong, he
- 38:23Speaker 1: just might have say it a little rough. Yeah. Yeah,
- 38:28Speaker 1: I definitely think he gets misunderstood a lot. But if
- 38:31Speaker 1: you listen to him the right way, like you said,
- 38:34Speaker 1: there's nothing but gems, so many gems. Yeah, did you
- 38:38Speaker 1: ever have one of those experiences with Dame where maybe
- 38:42Speaker 1: he because you know, I always think back to watching backstage,
- 38:46Speaker 1: you know the movie where he was going off on
- 38:48Speaker 1: Clue and and Kevin Lyles, And I mean did you
- 38:52Speaker 1: ever were you ever like a witness or a part
- 38:54Speaker 1: of a go off moment? Yeah, I'm glad I miss all. Yeah,
- 38:59Speaker 1: I wouldn't round those, Yeah, because like I feel like,
- 39:03Speaker 1: what year did you What year was We Are the Champions?
- 39:06Speaker 1: Was that in two thousand and two? Two thousand and one?
- 39:10Speaker 1: You know you're gonna have a problem trying to give
- 39:12Speaker 1: me the guest these years the match up these records
- 39:14Speaker 1: that was paid in full soundtrack? Hey, when when they
- 39:20Speaker 1: sent you that record We Are the Champions? Was everyone's
- 39:23Speaker 1: else ship already on it? Were you like like like
- 39:25Speaker 1: like how did you hear it? I was actually in
- 39:27Speaker 1: New York. I was actually standing in the studio with
- 39:31Speaker 1: Beanie Siegel with them talking about the record with with
- 39:36Speaker 1: with Dame explaining to me how he wanted it to
- 39:38Speaker 1: sound and everything, and uh, why did I record that?
- 39:42Speaker 1: I can't remember recorded record? Did? I recorded in Chicago?
- 39:49Speaker 1: And I can't remember when I recorded it, but I
- 39:52Speaker 1: remember writing it and I remembering in New York vibe.
- 39:57Speaker 1: You remember where I recorded Champions at Well, we got
- 40:04Speaker 1: the record in New York and I took it back
- 40:06Speaker 1: to Chicago. That's what happened. Were you there? Because I
- 40:09Speaker 1: always what I loved about Beanie Siegus verse on that
- 40:11Speaker 1: song is it was really not it was just really him.
- 40:14Speaker 1: It was just him talking going off. Yeah, like it was.
- 40:18Speaker 1: It was just like energy. It wasn't so much about
- 40:21Speaker 1: his rapping as much as it was like, yeah, you
- 40:23Speaker 1: know what I mean, like he would stop. Yeah. I
- 40:26Speaker 1: love that vibe he put on that. Were you around, like,
- 40:28Speaker 1: like you said, you were in with Beanie when that
- 40:30Speaker 1: record got like explained was he did he record it
- 40:32Speaker 1: that night or I don't think he recorded it that night,
- 40:35Speaker 1: but uh yeah, I don't think he recorded that night,
- 40:40Speaker 1: but he was definitely around and just you know, the
- 40:43Speaker 1: whole vibe and everything. And then you know, I was
- 40:46Speaker 1: the new one to the team. So that's that was
- 40:48Speaker 1: the energy that I had on that record right there
- 40:50Speaker 1: on the Champion. Oh yeah, when they brought you on,
- 40:52Speaker 1: when Dame brought you on, it was like, oh man,
- 40:54Speaker 1: and then you just you hit the home run. Yo.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Who's somebody who you've recorded a song with or that
- 40:59Speaker 1: you hopped on a record or with where you were
- 41:00Speaker 1: intimidated when it came to like you know, you've worked
- 41:03Speaker 1: with a lot of legends, man, and like I said,
- 41:05Speaker 1: you've you've done your thing on a lot of people's
- 41:08Speaker 1: records and made them look crazy. But who's somebody who
- 41:10Speaker 1: you were like extra? Like, Man, I really got to
- 41:13Speaker 1: bring my ship. Damn. I don't know. I mean, I
- 41:21Speaker 1: love hate doing records with Tech nine. Ah yeah, I
- 41:27Speaker 1: love hate doing records with that dude. You guys got
- 41:29Speaker 1: some ship? Did you gotta work? It is like I
- 41:31Speaker 1: know he feel the same way. Trust me, if you
- 41:33Speaker 1: ask him, you feel the same. Yeah. If you if
- 41:39Speaker 1: you're in a lazy mode, you don't want to do
- 41:41Speaker 1: a record, you gotta be ready, you gotta you gotta
- 41:43Speaker 1: like miss the ship out of rap tech N. I
- 41:46Speaker 1: feel like Tech nine always has the biggest chip on
- 41:48Speaker 1: his shoulder or what he raps like, no matter what
- 41:49Speaker 1: he's like, always it's like it's just there's a chip
- 41:52Speaker 1: and it's just it's too much going on. You you
- 41:56Speaker 1: were on, you were on, you were on the Worldwide
- 41:59Speaker 1: Choppers with Buster Rhymes, yellow Wolf. There was a lot
- 42:03Speaker 1: of people on that record. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Like that
- 42:07Speaker 1: record was crazy, Like when you go back and listen
- 42:11Speaker 1: to that, that was like eight minutes straight of people
- 42:13Speaker 1: just from all over the word, people from Instant, from
- 42:15Speaker 1: Turkey on there, all kinds of it was yeah, tech
- 42:18Speaker 1: Nis Man tech Nis also for a lot of artists.
- 42:22Speaker 1: If you want to come up, go watch a tech
- 42:24Speaker 1: nine concerts so you can figure out how to perform too,
- 42:26Speaker 1: because that motherfucker's a beast live. Oh yeah, so who
- 42:29Speaker 1: are you? You got another guy? It's probably a bunch
- 42:32Speaker 1: of them, but I can't think of any right now
- 42:35Speaker 1: that uh pops right in my head of course, j
- 42:40Speaker 1: of course Jay yeah, hm hmm popping popping tags. Was
- 42:48Speaker 1: one man do this record with this person, and I
- 42:51Speaker 1: was like, damn god mh. I wouldn't say, uh, worried
- 42:58Speaker 1: or scared, but probably my thought process on how I
- 43:03Speaker 1: was gonna come with my delivery or what to do
- 43:06Speaker 1: with this particular person. You know, so like damn this
- 43:10Speaker 1: such and such or this so and something right, you know,
- 43:12Speaker 1: so like Mariah somebody like that, you know, yeah, like damn,
- 43:19Speaker 1: you know, but like like another rapper or something like that.
- 43:21Speaker 1: It's probably somebody. I just can't think of anybody right
- 43:24Speaker 1: now besides Tech Technicals that's the one that and probably Buster. Yeah,
- 43:30Speaker 1: it's the work. You gotta put some damn work in
- 43:32Speaker 1: you gonna feel like all that sometimes for sure? For sure?
- 43:36Speaker 1: What's your favorite personally? Like, what's your favorite album of yours?
- 43:42Speaker 1: Adrenaline Rush. Adrenaline Rush. That was ninety seven, right, I'm
- 43:47Speaker 1: over asking you about years and ship about about ninety
- 43:49Speaker 1: six Adrenaline Rush. Man should remember, But yeah, I said,
- 43:54Speaker 1: I feel like that's an album too. That's also like, uh,
- 43:56Speaker 1: you know, we don't. It's it's one of them. I
- 43:58Speaker 1: feel like it's like a cult classic. Like my favorite
- 44:00Speaker 1: movie is called The Big Lebowski is right up there.
- 44:03Speaker 1: A lot of a lot of people don't talk about
- 44:04Speaker 1: The Big Lebowski. I feel like Adrenaline Rush is a
- 44:06Speaker 1: cold claxic, like it's like if you know, you know,
- 44:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean, you had to be there
- 44:11Speaker 1: type shit. Yeah, that's my joint right there. Man. That's
- 44:13Speaker 1: you know, of course Kama Kazi and my first album.
- 44:17Speaker 1: But Kama Kazi was like your commercial peak as far
- 44:20Speaker 1: as like hit records on an album, right, just like
- 44:23Speaker 1: that was like, yeah, yeah, I would call it my
- 44:26Speaker 1: commercial peak. Yeah yeah, yeah yeah. Do you think what
- 44:29Speaker 1: do you think like kind of you know, because you've
- 44:32Speaker 1: you've had such a long career, obviously still doing your thing,
- 44:35Speaker 1: but what do you think worked against you kind of
- 44:40Speaker 1: extending that peak longer? Me? Me loving rap from a
- 44:50Speaker 1: certain angle, you know, I always love rap from a
- 44:53Speaker 1: rapper's perspective and not a be in the industry's perspective,
- 44:58Speaker 1: and so sometimes some of that may have hindered me.
- 45:01Speaker 1: You know, always had the will to want to be
- 45:05Speaker 1: half normal, half amazing or in this thing, you know,
- 45:10Speaker 1: so I gotta have a little bit of normal in
- 45:13Speaker 1: my life, and I think that thought process kind of
- 45:16Speaker 1: you know, hinders me. And because because to be in
- 45:20Speaker 1: the industry, man like successful people outside of it don't
- 45:24Speaker 1: realize how much hard work it is. It's it's way
- 45:27Speaker 1: harder than the nine to five, but they don't know
- 45:29Speaker 1: that until they try to get in it and do it,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you know. So so you're saying essentially, like you know,
- 45:35Speaker 1: like like you said, you know, if you're in an industry,
- 45:37Speaker 1: you gotta go to functions, you gotta kind of you gotta.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta kind of have fake friends, like
- 45:42Speaker 1: people who you kind of talk to just because it's
- 45:45Speaker 1: a good like. You know, there's associates. There's a lot
- 45:48Speaker 1: of people who you might consider acquaintance has been not
- 45:53Speaker 1: friends in the music industry, right man, You gotta do,
- 45:56Speaker 1: you gotta do. It's a lot of bullshitting other people
- 45:59Speaker 1: in this an extremely lot of bullshitting yourself. And it's
- 46:03Speaker 1: just only so much I can bullshit myself, you know
- 46:05Speaker 1: what I mean? So I just got to keep it real.
- 46:08Speaker 1: I wanted to be a dope ass rapper, rock shows,
- 46:11Speaker 1: rock people, put out records, and there was a certain
- 46:14Speaker 1: extent of it, you know. So so to get to
- 46:17Speaker 1: a certain level, to have to act a certain way
- 46:20Speaker 1: or be a certain way, or fake a certain friendship
- 46:24Speaker 1: with certain people. And isn't that I just couldn't be
- 46:26Speaker 1: into all that. What was a feature that almost happened
- 46:31Speaker 1: that didn't happen for you? Damn? Oh, I know it's
- 46:35Speaker 1: gonna be one that come right in. I always think
- 46:38Speaker 1: back to like just being like a big, a big
- 46:40Speaker 1: fan of Biggie and thinking like how I got a
- 46:43Speaker 1: late when I got a late? When I first off
- 46:45Speaker 1: let me say I love all rappers in Texas. I'm
- 46:48Speaker 1: a fan of all rappers in Texas. And with that
- 46:51Speaker 1: being said, I was just about to do a feature
- 46:55Speaker 1: with Mo three. Oh yeah, we was like probably days away, right,
- 47:00Speaker 1: We were literally literally days away from working on a
- 47:03Speaker 1: record together. So he yeah, he passed. Was it this year?
- 47:09Speaker 1: Was it late last year? Most three is dope? Man?
- 47:12Speaker 1: He just put a new album out too, So that
- 47:15Speaker 1: just came out Friday. All of them guys dope man.
- 47:18Speaker 1: So you've always just been a big fan of the
- 47:20Speaker 1: Texas guys. Yeah, all the Texas got Dallas, Houston, all
- 47:23Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, hey shure, hey man. What was it
- 47:26Speaker 1: like coming up at the same time as Common in
- 47:28Speaker 1: the same city, because that's the common I mean I
- 47:30Speaker 1: loved Resurrection and like that era of Common, like when
- 47:32Speaker 1: he was common sense, like you guys kind of being
- 47:35Speaker 1: on like opposite sounds of the same like of the
- 47:37Speaker 1: same city. Like, did you guys have a good relationship
- 47:41Speaker 1: in the nineties, Like yeah, we was always cool. We
- 47:44Speaker 1: never really got a chance to like hang around each other,
- 47:46Speaker 1: like right as much as we probably could have, but
- 47:49Speaker 1: you know, just was on different vibes. You know, he
- 47:52Speaker 1: was a south Side guy was the West Side guy.
- 47:54Speaker 1: My music was, you know, more street orientated. His was
- 47:59Speaker 1: more hip hop orientated. You know, were you rooting for
- 48:02Speaker 1: him when he when he when he put out the
- 48:04Speaker 1: bitching you against Ice Cube? Oh yeah that was bad.
- 48:09Speaker 1: That was what was gonna happen, you know, but damn,
- 48:12Speaker 1: I didn't know what was gonna happen like that as
- 48:14Speaker 1: smooth as it happened. Yeah, I think Cube is self
- 48:18Speaker 1: even respected. I would out when I saw Cube too. Man,
- 48:21Speaker 1: I had a fan out moment of course. Yeah, like, damn,
- 48:25Speaker 1: there's a few of those guys ship. I mean, I
- 48:28Speaker 1: it's crazy because you know, losing DMX, that was one
- 48:30Speaker 1: of the few guys in hip hop I met who
- 48:32Speaker 1: I like, really was like starstruck, id like tell him, like, man,
- 48:36Speaker 1: you don't stand what you meant to me? Bro, Like
- 48:37Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I saw him at an
- 48:39Speaker 1: award show and I fanned out and didn't speak to him.
- 48:43Speaker 1: He was walking past, so he didn't really see me,
- 48:45Speaker 1: and I had the opportunity to probably speak to him,
- 48:48Speaker 1: but I just looked and fanned out. And because of
- 48:50Speaker 1: the current situation, that that's one moment I regret that
- 48:53Speaker 1: I didn't go straight at him. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy man. Yeah,
- 49:00Speaker 1: you know, he lived a good life. You know, there
- 49:03Speaker 1: was an interview clip that I saw recently on the
- 49:05Speaker 1: Drink Champs where he said, if I dropped dead tomorrow,
- 49:08Speaker 1: I lived a good life. And he did live a
- 49:09Speaker 1: good life man. Yeah, touched a lot of people. So
- 49:11Speaker 1: rest in peace to Dmax. Well, look, the new album
- 49:14Speaker 1: is out for twenty yeah, ep, and then a new
- 49:19Speaker 1: Twisted album will be coming shortly after its you said
- 49:21Speaker 1: it's pretty much done yep. For twenty we got News
- 49:24Speaker 1: at nine with Relo or Dreamer right here with your
- 49:27Speaker 1: Shot Town, and then we got Shoot Already that's coming
- 49:29Speaker 1: after that. We got a bunch of dope songs. You go.
- 49:32Speaker 1: It's like a mixture of Adrenaline Rush and Shooter song
- 49:36Speaker 1: features on that. Oh yeah, it's a few surprises on that.
- 49:41Speaker 1: I didn't go too hard with the features. It's a
- 49:43Speaker 1: few surprises. I kept it adrenaline Rush esque. Do you
- 49:47Speaker 1: enjoy being independent now, like as opposed to the major
- 49:50Speaker 1: label shit? Yeah, I've always enjoyed it once I got
- 49:53Speaker 1: into it, you know. Yeah, when we first started off,
- 49:56Speaker 1: we was killing it too, right. It's always like, you know,
- 49:59Speaker 1: it's I think nowadays, specifically back in the day, it
- 50:06Speaker 1: would makes sense to sign to a major label. Yeah.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I think once you learn, learn the ropes a little bit,
- 50:11Speaker 1: learn the business, got people on your team that can
- 50:13Speaker 1: kind of emulate what you would get from a record label,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and especially got some income. Well yeah, now I feel
- 50:19Speaker 1: like nowadays you get there, you go straight to the fans.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Back in the day, you kind of needed a label
- 50:23Speaker 1: to get to your fans. Yeah, because it's like technology
- 50:29Speaker 1: was expensive then. Yeah, now it's free labels they had
- 50:33Speaker 1: the money to do it. Right now, technology advanced to
- 50:37Speaker 1: the level where you know, it can't be controlled like that,
- 50:40Speaker 1: and and you know, in one way, so I think
- 50:44Speaker 1: a lot of artists today got an advantage. You know.
- 50:46Speaker 1: The advantage today is that you can use technology in
- 50:51Speaker 1: a way that we couldn't in the past. The other
- 50:54Speaker 1: difference though, is that the playing field you got so
- 50:59Speaker 1: many people to be up against that also have the
- 51:03Speaker 1: Internet for free, got you, and so it kind of
- 51:06Speaker 1: balances itself out. You have the ogs like, oh, y'all
- 51:10Speaker 1: got it easier than us, because not really, because Newcat's
- 51:14Speaker 1: got to go against a million other people. When you
- 51:16Speaker 1: were probably the only person rapping in your neighborhood, right,
- 51:19Speaker 1: because now everyone's rapping. Everyone can get fruity woops, everyone
- 51:23Speaker 1: can go buy a mic for one hundred dollars or so.
- 51:25Speaker 1: So it evens itself out. Yeah, it's like you got
