- 0:03Speaker 1: Day eight of training camp is getting started right now, Brian, John,
- 0:06Speaker 1: who were you most impressed with since the.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Pads have gone on Tuesday?
- 0:10Speaker 3: What are you saying?
- 0:11Speaker 1: We are you most impressed with since the pads of
- 0:13Speaker 1: Walker and the.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Way that he's played in one or one matchups.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I would have gone with Walker, but Brian took it,
- 0:19Speaker 4: so I'll go so far with a hesitant understanding and
- 0:24Speaker 4: needs to show more. Uh, calebon Chase Don has looked
- 0:27Speaker 4: awfully good at times.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Welcome into jags Am. It's August third, and we are
- 0:53Speaker 1: in day eight of training camp.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Who's a live look.
- 0:55Speaker 1: They're getting out there, getting stretching, getting going, and we're
- 0:58Speaker 1: got you covered with all of your jags Am news
- 1:00Speaker 1: that you need today. Now we did mention pads went
- 1:02Speaker 1: on Tuesday, so things have been a little bit different
- 1:05Speaker 1: this week, and not necessarily players you've been seeing, but
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's a different vibe now right.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It feels like it's officially started.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I think that's true. I think you've got guys that
- 1:13Speaker 3: understand that now they're expected to perform, not that they
- 1:16Speaker 3: weren't before, but the evaluation takes on a different level
- 1:20Speaker 3: here and John, we'll start talking about another week or two,
- 1:23Speaker 3: the reps start becoming more and more precious for the
- 1:25Speaker 3: guys who are on the bottom of the roster because
- 1:27Speaker 3: they become fewer and fewer as we get closer to
- 1:29Speaker 3: the start of the season.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt, And I thought, I think everybody who
- 1:33Speaker 4: watched it thought that yesterday's practice was a little sloppy.
- 1:38Speaker 4: But Ryan o'haller ran from the Buffalo News he used
- 1:40Speaker 4: to be here with the Floda Times Union kind of
- 1:42Speaker 4: came to me afterward and laughed. He said, how many
- 1:45Speaker 4: times have we seen it where the second day in
- 1:47Speaker 4: pads is sloppy because it's always Yeah, they're getting used
- 1:52Speaker 4: to it again, they've had that one day. You're a
- 1:55Speaker 4: little draggy, So I expect today to be much better.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Kai all right, our big thing number one, and obviously
- 2:00Speaker 1: that the pads are on now. Head coach Doug Peterson
- 2:03Speaker 1: talked to us yesterday, talked to the media, and he
- 2:04Speaker 1: talked about at this point in the training camp he
- 2:07Speaker 1: likes to just get that physicality out there and kind
- 2:09Speaker 1: of set the tone and see what this team will
- 2:11Speaker 1: be going forward.
- 2:14Speaker 5: A camp progresses, right, you want to establish an identity,
- 2:18Speaker 5: you want to you want to have some sort of
- 2:20Speaker 5: physicality about you with the pass rush, and so yesterday
- 2:24Speaker 5: it was just trying to do that, trying to establish
- 2:27Speaker 5: that physicality, trying to establish you know, that sort of
- 2:32Speaker 5: that persona of who who can we be?
- 2:36Speaker 3: I thought that sound by yesterday said everything about how
- 2:39Speaker 3: the league has changed. Right when Doug was a player
- 2:42Speaker 3: in the nineties, there wasn't some sort of physicality that
- 2:46Speaker 3: you were trying to establish. That was what training camp was.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I mean, far be it from me to sound like
- 2:51Speaker 3: the old man in the room, but they used to
- 2:53Speaker 3: practice twice a day in full pads. Topic manus was
- 2:55Speaker 3: out there when there's imagine if you only had one
- 2:58Speaker 3: a day and how well you'd perform. But the reality
- 3:01Speaker 3: of it is is that it was all about physicality.
- 3:03Speaker 3: That's what the football game is about physicality, and it
- 3:07Speaker 3: tells you exactly how a coach has to navigate training
- 3:10Speaker 3: camp with limited hitting to protect his salary cap and
- 3:15Speaker 3: his team going forward. It told to me I just
- 3:19Speaker 3: that was everything.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well, I am the old man in the room, so
- 3:23Speaker 4: it's not close to the same. And training camp really,
- 3:27Speaker 4: if anybody went to training camp from I started coming
- 3:31Speaker 4: nine five from N ten they would not call what
- 3:35Speaker 4: happens now training camp no, because you go to practice
- 3:37Speaker 4: in the morning and then you're off the field, especially
- 3:40Speaker 4: with the media.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, we're at.
- 3:42Speaker 4: One practice that we don't see anything else for the
- 3:44Speaker 4: rest of the day, and he used to be two days.
- 3:46Speaker 4: It's a completely different thing. So it's it's a bunch
- 3:49Speaker 4: of practices strung together, but now that you're off my lawn, Kai,
- 3:55Speaker 4: that's on. The interesting thing about what Doug says is
- 4:01Speaker 4: how much coaches have to have a plan now for
- 4:07Speaker 4: how to get your team physical because there's an acknowledge
- 4:10Speaker 4: around the league. You cannot hit I expect him to
- 4:14Speaker 4: hit hard, mean idea players hitting hard maybe twice sometime
- 4:18Speaker 4: in the next eight practices, but you cannot do that
- 4:23Speaker 4: every day anymore and expect to survive and get your
- 4:26Speaker 4: team to So you have to plan it out and
- 4:28Speaker 4: be very careful of how you're going to be a
- 4:30Speaker 4: physical team. Much different, as you say, Brian, than you
- 4:33Speaker 4: used to be well.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And it kind of ties into my Caldwell from the
- 4:35Speaker 3: day before. The defensive coordinator was asked repeatedly about a
- 4:39Speaker 3: tackling plan and how do you practice tackling. You didn't
- 4:42Speaker 3: even think about it. Back then, you just did it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: That was part of the day. You were in full
- 4:45Speaker 3: pads twice a day, and so tackling wasn't even part
- 4:49Speaker 3: of it. You really have to think it out, and
- 4:52Speaker 3: for all the right reasons. I mean, player safety has
- 4:54Speaker 3: become a huge issue. You're in the hottest part of
- 4:56Speaker 3: the year down here, and you can't afford to replace
- 4:59Speaker 3: guys in the salary cap e were like you could before,
- 5:02Speaker 3: So you got to be smart. It's just a completely
- 5:05Speaker 3: different approach.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Would you rather be a great tackling team, kay, or
- 5:08Speaker 4: have Calvin Ridley and Josh Allen to start week one?
- 5:10Speaker 1: It's a fine line to walk. You want to protect
- 5:12Speaker 1: your players, the talent that they have out there. You
- 5:14Speaker 1: want to have them when the season starts.
- 5:16Speaker 3: The old school coaching, I want both. Why can't I
- 5:18Speaker 3: have both?
- 5:18Speaker 4: Uh? Because now if you do that, you're going to
- 5:23Speaker 4: get your bet fired at the end of the season
- 5:24Speaker 4: for losing players.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And being dumb.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And Doug is not dumb. He's very smart. So it's
- 5:28Speaker 1: a fine line to walk. And he's doing a great job.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But do you want to talk a big thing? Number
- 5:32Speaker 1: two is year two, right, so for everybody in the
- 5:34Speaker 1: coaching staff and a lot of these players dealing with
- 5:36Speaker 1: their system for the second year round. Josh Allen spoke
- 5:38Speaker 1: to us on the first day of pads and he
- 5:40Speaker 1: said he's liking what he's seeing so far in terms
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the game plan and kind of how they're going
- 5:45Speaker 1: to go about the pass rush differently this season.
- 5:48Speaker 6: There's a lot of new calls that I really like.
- 5:51Speaker 6: You know, I want to see them every week because
- 5:53Speaker 6: I think they'll really work for us. But in order
- 5:55Speaker 6: to do that, we have to be successful all.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Here one on them.
- 5:58Speaker 6: So you know, I saw new calls, the new plays
- 6:00Speaker 6: that benefits us. Let's let's take it up alot on
- 6:03Speaker 6: k nots.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Brian.
- 6:05Speaker 1: What do you take out of what he's saying in
- 6:07Speaker 1: terms of how they're going to try to rush a
- 6:09Speaker 1: little bit earlier. I mean, we put so much focus
- 6:11Speaker 1: on the pass rush. That is it simple as that, Well,
- 6:13Speaker 1: just trying to rush earlier in the downs.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It's mixing things up a little bit. Remember, Mike was
- 6:18Speaker 3: his it was the first year defensive coordinator. You know,
- 6:21Speaker 3: he had been a linebacker and a linebacker's coach for
- 6:23Speaker 3: a long time. But when you're actually having to make
- 6:25Speaker 3: the calls and to adjust, And I think that was
- 6:27Speaker 3: the interesting part. We talked about Mike Caldwell's lack of
- 6:31Speaker 3: adjustments at time last year, and he basically said after
- 6:34Speaker 3: the season and before practice the other day that that's
- 6:38Speaker 3: just part of the learning curve for him to be
- 6:39Speaker 3: able to know what his players do well and where
- 6:44Speaker 3: he can make adjustments. He feels much more comfortable in
- 6:47Speaker 3: year two, and so the players do, and now he
- 6:49Speaker 3: knows what Josh Allen likes to do, wants to do,
- 6:53Speaker 3: capable of doing. Will he feel comfortable rushing the passer
- 6:57Speaker 3: on first down really going after him? We'll see, even
- 7:02Speaker 3: that's a quarterback and not a quarterback.
- 7:04Speaker 4: It's hard to know what they're saying in terms of
- 7:06Speaker 4: how it's going to translate toys sair on the field,
- 7:09Speaker 4: because they're not gonna give away what they're doing, nor
- 7:11Speaker 4: should they. I thought the most interesting about what Mike
- 7:14Speaker 4: Caldwell said about this was how he felt like at
- 7:19Speaker 4: times last year that I don't want to say, micromanage,
- 7:24Speaker 4: but tried to make the perfect call every time. And
- 7:28Speaker 4: it certainly sounded to me like there'll be more instances
- 7:31Speaker 4: of just letting the players play and trust that if
- 7:35Speaker 4: you get them in the right defense, generally speaking, more often,
- 7:42Speaker 4: that there's talent out there to make the plays, and
- 7:44Speaker 4: that you don't necessarily remember he came from a Todd
- 7:47Speaker 4: Bowles system where Todd had had infinite experience and it's
- 7:53Speaker 4: very detailed and it's bringing something new and unique every time. Well,
- 7:57Speaker 4: I expend to keep doing that, but it certainly sounded
- 8:00Speaker 4: to me like he's backing off that a little bit
- 8:01Speaker 4: and saying, keep it simple, go play football.
- 8:04Speaker 3: So think also about all the guys who were together, right, So, yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 3: Foyer Lucon who was new last year, lining up next
- 8:09Speaker 3: to two young players in Chad Mumma and Devin Lloyd,
- 8:12Speaker 3: and you had a young Trayvon Walker, and you had
- 8:16Speaker 3: fully fought Tukasi in the middle, and you Andre Cisco
- 8:18Speaker 3: had moved into the starting lineup. Everything was new and
- 8:21Speaker 3: they didn't know so new coordinator, new players, new scheme.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Trying to be complex.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Absolutely, so this year that should all change. So I
- 8:29Speaker 3: think what Josh is really stating is the obvious is, Hey,
- 8:32Speaker 3: we're ready to take that next step and to be
- 8:34Speaker 3: a better football team. Now we've got the communication down
- 8:38Speaker 3: and we understand what the guy next to us is
- 8:41Speaker 3: capable of doing, and we trust him to do his
- 8:43Speaker 3: job so that we can do ours.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You're hoping I'll freeze up a little more creativity, obviously adjustments,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and maybe we'll see something a little bit different. Obviously
- 8:52Speaker 1: what they did, you know, wasn't quite working for him.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So hopefully this year we'll see something a little bit.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I thank you because Todd Bowles is super aggressive and
- 9:00Speaker 3: and I think my cold will will now feel comfortable
- 9:01Speaker 3: with what.
- 9:01Speaker 2: He's Scott all right, let's hope.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So our last big thing of the day is not
- 9:06Speaker 1: yet we don't have a SoundBite about it necessarily, but
- 9:09Speaker 1: it's that, you know, he gets so hyped about training
- 9:11Speaker 1: camp coming up, and then we talked a little bit
- 9:13Speaker 1: about it already, but yesterday it was kind of a dud.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Wasn't a great practice, right, And it was that first
- 9:17Speaker 1: uh well second practice, the first practice after the first
- 9:20Speaker 1: padded practice, and he kind of saw a little bit
- 9:22Speaker 1: of a letdown. And I think it's important for us
- 9:24Speaker 1: to remind people that as excited as we are for
- 9:26Speaker 1: football to come back, this is a grind. It's training camp, right,
- 9:29Speaker 1: We've talked about they're gonna have those you know, three
- 9:32Speaker 1: four hard practices right in a row, coming up with
- 9:34Speaker 1: us in stadium scrimmage on Saturday, and it's just kind
- 9:37Speaker 1: of tempering some expectations a little bit, not to like
- 9:40Speaker 1: get anybody less hype, but just be like, yeah, they're
- 9:43Speaker 1: gonna have an off day. Well, bout today is a
- 9:45Speaker 1: big day to see, you know, if they can get
- 9:46Speaker 1: back on track.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Well we're still five weeks away from the regular season,
- 9:50Speaker 4: so I'll clarify I said, I said earlier. I thought
- 9:54Speaker 4: it was a sloppy practice, but I didn't think it
- 9:56Speaker 4: lacked intensity.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I think effort was certainly there.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought it looked sloppy to us because there
- 10:02Speaker 4: were a lot of balls on the ground. They hadn't
- 10:04Speaker 4: been on the ground yet. But Brian, you wrote about it,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and I did too. The one on one coverage drill
- 10:11Speaker 4: was as intense as I've seen a drill this practice,
- 10:14Speaker 4: I mean, uh, this training camp. And I was struck
- 10:19Speaker 4: in trying to write it later. I was struck by
- 10:22Speaker 4: how to sort of phrase it. Of I didn't think
- 10:25Speaker 4: they were necessarily not improving just because passes were being dropped.
- 10:30Speaker 4: There was really hard work between the corners covering these guys.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Between guys getting open. So I thought, I'll bet if
- 10:36Speaker 4: you asked Doug held say, it was a fine practice
- 10:39Speaker 4: the defense had. This team is not going to drop passes.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I mean, Calvin Ridley I think had four drops. Well,
- 10:44Speaker 4: his history shows us that that's not going to be
- 10:47Speaker 4: his norms. I don't worry about that. I don't think
- 10:51Speaker 4: they lost any ground. I don't think you lose grind
- 10:54Speaker 4: at one, but just part of the problem. You will
- 10:56Speaker 4: see efficiency pick back up as guys get more used
- 11:00Speaker 4: to be in past.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I just want to point this out. The first rep
- 11:03Speaker 3: between Calvin Ridley and Tyson Campbell, it was a nasty
- 11:09Speaker 3: little move that Calvin used to get open and it
- 11:12Speaker 3: turned Tyson around and Tyson was really hot with himself
- 11:15Speaker 3: before the second and by the way Calvin dropped the ball.
- 11:18Speaker 3: The second rep, Tshaye Townsend comes over and grabs Tyson,
- 11:23Speaker 3: like I wrote, like a boxer and his manager in
- 11:26Speaker 3: the ring, and across the field here comes Trevor Lawrence
- 11:29Speaker 3: to do the exact same thing with Calvin Ridley. I mean,
- 11:31Speaker 3: there was such a competitiveness to it. And the thing
- 11:34Speaker 3: that I loved, which I thought was really good at practice,
- 11:36Speaker 3: was every other defensive back watched that want to be Tyson.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They wanted their matchup no matter who they were lined
- 11:42Speaker 3: up against with right to be as intense as that.
- 11:45Speaker 3: It sets a tempo and expectation level for how the
- 11:47Speaker 3: defensive backs are going to play.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I thought it was an important moment absolutely, and to
- 11:52Speaker 1: see one on one, the best of the best going
- 11:54Speaker 1: against each other, how could you not like improve from
- 11:56Speaker 1: that and enjoy watching it as well. So hopefully the
- 11:59Speaker 1: team takes a lot out of that. Coming up practice
- 12:02Speaker 1: is underway today, we're going to keep an eye on
- 12:04Speaker 1: things and we're going to talk a little bit about
- 12:05Speaker 1: some of the lesser talked about players that are trying
- 12:08Speaker 1: to make this fifty three man roster. Welcome back to
- 12:30Speaker 1: jack Sam. We're sponsored by Sutteth is Flora's most trusted

- 12:36Speaker 1: official moving partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. To get a
- 12:38Speaker 1: guaranteed quote, visit suttith dot com slash Jacks. All right,
- 12:43Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the fifty three because obviously everyone
- 12:46Speaker 1: in training camp wants to make that final roster, and
- 12:49Speaker 1: there are some names that we don't talk about a
- 12:51Speaker 1: ton or maybe just people that are doing really well
- 12:53Speaker 1: in training camp that you didn't necessarily have your eye on. So, Brian,
- 12:58Speaker 1: who did you want to talk about today that you've
- 13:00Speaker 1: either seen out there or needs to have.
- 13:01Speaker 3: A really good training guy that I've seen every day
- 13:05Speaker 3: a young man named Devad Wilson, who is a UCF
- 13:09Speaker 3: undrafted rookie free agent, a cornerback. He started at Georgia
- 13:13Speaker 3: and then transferred to UCF. He's a big guy, so
- 13:16Speaker 3: he's got length. He's six foot, he's one hundred and
- 13:18Speaker 3: ninety pounds, long, arms of big hands. So he made
- 13:21Speaker 3: plays yesterday. I made three pass deflections on Wednesday against
- 13:26Speaker 3: first and second team receivers. He was more than holding
- 13:28Speaker 3: his own both sides of the field, middle of the field,
- 13:31Speaker 3: he was flopping, he was inside. He showed me a
- 13:35Speaker 3: depth of ability and I was really impressed with the kid.
- 13:39Speaker 3: And then start talking about special teams, because a guy
- 13:41Speaker 3: like this, if he's gonna have any shot at the
- 13:43Speaker 3: fifty three, it's gonna have to be a contribute on
- 13:45Speaker 3: special teams. Same thing, he can do a lot of
- 13:47Speaker 3: different things. Gunnar line up inside on coverage teams. He's
- 13:51Speaker 3: an interesting talent. I'm looking forward to the chance to
- 13:53Speaker 3: actually talk to the kid and figure out if he's
- 13:56Speaker 3: got the mental makeup for this game. But it sure
- 13:59Speaker 3: looks like he's a player who's going to be challenging
- 14:03Speaker 3: at the bottom of the roster for one of those spots.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Talented kid in john what's looking like a deep group
- 14:09Speaker 3: of young defensive backs. I know you're not gonna mention him,
- 14:11Speaker 3: so I will Eric Hamlet, the safety from pitt six
- 14:16Speaker 3: or seventh round pick. I forget there were so many
- 14:17Speaker 3: of them. He broke up a couple of passes yesterday
- 14:20Speaker 3: and looked like a guy who was, you know, starting
- 14:22Speaker 3: to get his legs underneath him. So as I watched
- 14:25Speaker 3: you know, Hamlet and Wilson in particular, I said, there
- 14:28Speaker 3: is a group of young defensive backs and that's important.
- 14:31Speaker 3: We said this was a storyline for training camp and
- 14:33Speaker 3: an important one. It looks pretty good right now.
- 14:36Speaker 4: It's deep. I think you still want them to rise
- 14:39Speaker 4: and see somebody who will prove it on the field
- 14:43Speaker 4: that they can't do it. Is that maybe your guy
- 14:46Speaker 4: John Well, probably not in the sense that Brian's talking about.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I went with Antonio Johnson, and people say, well, I've
- 14:53Speaker 4: heard of Antonio Johnson.
- 14:54Speaker 3: He said a couple of really good days.
- 14:55Speaker 4: But remember, it's all about me, and it is.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Before we started the show.
- 15:01Speaker 4: It's all about john My approach though, and anybody who
- 15:04Speaker 4: ever listens to me or bothers to read me when
- 15:06Speaker 4: I expect nothing from rookies, including first round rookies, I
- 15:11Speaker 4: just don't. Typically they need a year to be the
- 15:15Speaker 4: impact guy, you think, and so I don't pay much
- 15:19Speaker 4: attention to him in camp exceptsode. Okay, Well, he's gonna
- 15:21Speaker 4: be around. Antonio Johnson might be an exception, and I
- 15:25Speaker 4: know everybody's excited about him. He's slid in the draft.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Usually those guys who slide in the draft don't quite
- 15:31Speaker 4: work out because you've heard of them, but there's a
- 15:33Speaker 4: reason they don't get drafted.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Well, all of a sudden you start watching him in practice,
- 15:38Speaker 4: and he makes a play every day every day. We
- 15:44Speaker 4: talked this morning, special teams. He clearly is excelling in
- 15:49Speaker 4: that area.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Make the team sometimes at the end of a roscie.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Yeah he'll make the team, but it sounds like he's
- 15:55Speaker 4: gonna be a special team start.
- 15:56Speaker 3: He's gonna have a rule.
- 15:57Speaker 4: I don't know that he's going to be the nickel
- 16:01Speaker 4: guy that everybody wants him to be this year. Fans
- 16:04Speaker 4: as me all the time, he's gonna be the nickel
- 16:06Speaker 4: And talking to Jeff Logham on the field yesterday, we're
- 16:08Speaker 4: talking about different guys, and he said, you know, just
- 16:10Speaker 4: don't quite see him being able to cover in that
- 16:13Speaker 4: nickel spot the way you have to. But as a
- 16:16Speaker 4: future safety, Oh yeah, all of a sudden, and the
- 16:20Speaker 4: future could be late this year. Yeah, all of a sudden,
- 16:22Speaker 4: You've got another guy who you believe can be a
- 16:25Speaker 4: really good position player for you to build as you
- 16:28Speaker 4: go forward and to help Salary Cavey. He's everything that
- 16:33Speaker 4: you think you want in a developmental guy. News flash.
- 16:38Speaker 4: I'm excited about a rookie.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Hey kid. I made a conservation about him earlier this week.
- 16:44Speaker 3: He was covering in one on ones Jamal agnew that's
- 16:48Speaker 3: tough for a rookie, but he stayed close enough that
- 16:50Speaker 3: when CJ. Bethler just tried to drop the ball high
- 16:53Speaker 3: and into his hands in the end zone, that he
- 16:56Speaker 3: went up and high pointed the ball and got it away.
- 16:58Speaker 3: It was a tremendous athletic play. And I wrote that
- 17:01Speaker 3: day this kid's going to have a future, and the
- 17:03Speaker 3: future could be this year. I really think that he's
- 17:05Speaker 3: going to work his way into Mike Coldwell's scheme somehow,
- 17:08Speaker 3: some way. There's no doubt you have your eyes on
- 17:12Speaker 3: a rookie and are interested in him because he's making
- 17:14Speaker 3: you beat that.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah, not a matter of when, but how quickly with him.
- 17:17Speaker 1: It really feels like from what we've seen so far,
- 17:19Speaker 1: at least the person I picked is not a young player.
- 17:22Speaker 1: In fact, it's fully fought to CAUSSI who came here
- 17:26Speaker 1: on that three year deal, paid him a bit of money,
- 17:29Speaker 1: underperformed last year. I think fair to say a lot
- 17:31Speaker 1: get a caph injury that I think, Yeah, he definitely,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, was lingered. I was hurt by that, and
- 17:35Speaker 1: then also a new system as well, everybody was dealing with.
- 17:38Speaker 2: You know, he's a new player to the team.
- 17:40Speaker 1: But Doug doesn't name check a ton of people, and
- 17:42Speaker 1: he's brought him up at least two or three separate
- 17:45Speaker 1: times since camp has begun about being impressed with his
- 17:47Speaker 1: effort out there, what he's been able to do. And
- 17:50Speaker 1: if your head coach is seeing you with all that's
- 17:52Speaker 1: going on and saying how much he's expecting out of
- 17:55Speaker 1: you in the second year in a system. I think
- 17:57Speaker 1: there's a little bit of pressure on him, but he's
- 17:59Speaker 1: rising up to that from what we've seen so far.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Well, If he's good Brian and Kot, Yes, then all
- 18:08Speaker 4: of a sudden, you're really good on the interior of
- 18:11Speaker 4: the defense without needing to help in the interior Devon, Hamilton, Foyer, Fightacosi.
- 18:20Speaker 4: All of a sudden, you've got three guys where you're
- 18:23Speaker 4: not trying to pinch down, you're not trying to always
- 18:25Speaker 4: help there. That should help what everybody's concerned about, which
- 18:28Speaker 4: is the pass rush. And then all of a sudden,
- 18:30Speaker 4: you're really good against the run, which usually teams that
- 18:33Speaker 4: are good against the run get better against the pass
- 18:35Speaker 4: rush because they're in better pass rushing situations. So he's
- 18:39Speaker 4: really important. I admit I was one of those people
- 18:41Speaker 4: last year that maybe had written them off a little
- 18:43Speaker 4: bit as Okay, he's gonna be okay, but not gonna
- 18:46Speaker 4: be an impact guy because he didn't really see it
- 18:48Speaker 4: last year. If he's that, then all of a sudden,
- 18:51Speaker 4: this defense gets better fast.
- 18:52Speaker 3: You saw it early in the preseason opener against Cleveland
- 18:55Speaker 3: first series, Roy Robertson Harris, Devon Hamilton and fully fought
- 18:58Speaker 3: Ducossi dominated. Remember that's a powerful running game in Cleveland.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Even if they didn't have their stars in there, those
- 19:04Speaker 3: three guys dominated and fully left that game with a
- 19:10Speaker 3: calf injury, didn't play again in the preseason, was questionable
- 19:14Speaker 3: for most of the month of September every single you
- 19:16Speaker 3: know Wednesday injury report, and then he started to get
- 19:19Speaker 3: into the flow in October. I'm not making ex uses
- 19:21Speaker 3: for him. I think he's got a lot of ability,
- 19:23Speaker 3: and if he stays healthy, I think we'll have a
- 19:25Speaker 3: chance to see what John just talked about.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Well, sometimes, guy, you know, sometimes teams in a sense
- 19:34Speaker 4: do a player a disservice. And I'm not saying it
- 19:37Speaker 4: it's malicious or that it shouldn't be done. But when
- 19:41Speaker 4: you don't talk about injuries, which football teams hate to do,
- 19:43Speaker 4: they do, then all of a sudden, fans and even
- 19:48Speaker 4: media think, well, this guy is not playing very well.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I think Brandon Sheriff fell victim of this last year
- 19:52Speaker 4: as well. I think both of those guys, Sheriff and
- 19:56Speaker 4: Podocasi could you know, quote surprise Jaguar or as followers
- 20:00Speaker 4: this year by being really good, because I think both
- 20:03Speaker 4: of them played through things last year. They really held
- 20:05Speaker 4: them back.
- 20:06Speaker 1: All right, we'll have to remain to be seen, but
- 20:08Speaker 1: he could be a linchpant. If he can get that together,
- 20:10Speaker 1: it could help the rest of the defense come together
- 20:12Speaker 1: as well. All right, stay with us. Coming up, John's
- 20:14Speaker 1: gonna answer some of our questions with the ozone mail
- 20:17Speaker 1: bag and we'll be right here in the Hundai studios
- 20:19Speaker 1: when you come back. Today's edition of Jags Aam is
- 20:31Speaker 1: brought to you by Fields Auto Group, Jacksonville. You can
- 20:34Speaker 1: step up to luxury Fields Auto dot Com. All right
- 20:43Speaker 1: now that we are checking out on training camp right now,
- 20:45Speaker 1: they're getting doing some drills right now. We're I think
- 20:48Speaker 1: is a longer practice today as well. I know yesterday
- 20:51Speaker 1: went closer to two plus hours.
- 20:53Speaker 4: It looks like this is gonna be right at two
- 20:55Speaker 4: if I'm reading the schedule right.
- 20:56Speaker 1: All right, so another long one for them. We'll see
- 20:58Speaker 1: how it goes. And you're going to answer our questions
- 21:02Speaker 1: from the readers because you're so wise and we always
- 21:04Speaker 1: like when you can impart some wisdom.
- 21:06Speaker 4: We'll see what the questions, what she wanted from you
- 21:08Speaker 4: that she's buttering you up that way. She has a
- 21:11Speaker 4: good eye for talent.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Ord.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Her first question is from Chris. He says, what happens
- 21:16Speaker 1: when you add an elite receiver to a top ten offense?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Asking for a friend, Well, everything, they're all better. Everything
- 21:26Speaker 1: is good.
- 21:26Speaker 4: There's really three things on this. I think one is
- 21:30Speaker 4: you get the plays that you get from the guy,
- 21:32Speaker 4: which sounds sort of self evident. But you get special
- 21:36Speaker 4: that maybe you wouldn't have gotten if somebody normal had
- 21:39Speaker 4: been there. I would expect Calvin Ridley, who expect to
- 21:41Speaker 4: be the one, obviously once a month at least, and
- 21:46Speaker 4: anything about that. That's every four games. It could be
- 21:49Speaker 4: a big difference to make some kind of play where
- 21:52Speaker 4: you go, whoa, I haven't seen that around here in
- 21:54Speaker 4: a long time. We'll think about what that does. It
- 21:56Speaker 4: gives you seven points in that game, probably big difference
- 21:58Speaker 4: in the NFL, so I think it gives you that.
- 22:01Speaker 4: It also forces defenses to account for them, which obviously
- 22:05Speaker 4: makes everybody else better, which is a real thing. But
- 22:07Speaker 4: the biggest thing I think a top ten elite guy
- 22:10Speaker 4: gives you is for the quarterback. You know how a
- 22:14Speaker 4: defense has to play a top ten guy, so it
- 22:18Speaker 4: means that you can throw to him when he is open,
- 22:23Speaker 4: and you know when he has doubled that you have
- 22:25Speaker 4: easy reads for the rest. So I think it gives
- 22:28Speaker 4: the quarterback a much clearer idea of what he's going
- 22:31Speaker 4: to do on each play, which for a young guy,
- 22:35Speaker 4: and Trevor's going to be great, but he's still young,
- 22:37Speaker 4: having a comfort when you're back in the pocket can
- 22:41Speaker 4: be everything. So I think he's going to help immeasurably,
- 22:43Speaker 4: and just intuitively on third and six. Having a guy
- 22:48Speaker 4: where you know he's gonna be and you go back
- 22:49Speaker 4: there and you're under a blitz and you just throw it.
- 22:52Speaker 4: That's very that's grade school analysis, but I think just
- 22:57Speaker 4: instinctively that's going to help him.
- 22:58Speaker 3: For a technicals perpective perspective, he gives you spacing, which
- 23:02Speaker 3: is how modern offenses are constructed. They're trying to get
- 23:04Speaker 3: their playmakers in open space in one on one matchups
- 23:08Speaker 3: and let their athleticism take over. That's what he gives you,
- 23:12Speaker 3: not just for himself, right, but when you've got him,
- 23:15Speaker 3: as John alluded to, and the coverage is rule, then
- 23:17Speaker 3: they're spacing for Evan Ingram's a Jones Christian Kirk Traves
- 23:22Speaker 3: Etiana to the backfield. He allows you to space a
- 23:25Speaker 3: defense out and create one on one matchups.
- 23:28Speaker 4: And very quickly, just thinking about what we saw yes
- 23:31Speaker 4: day in the field, how hard Tyson Campbell had.
- 23:35Speaker 3: To work to cover him for hard?
- 23:37Speaker 4: Can you imagine having to do the whole game exactly?
- 23:39Speaker 4: So it gives you that, it gives you this feeling
- 23:42Speaker 4: of he's coming at me every you know, everybody on
- 23:45Speaker 4: the defense. We have to worry about this guy all
- 23:48Speaker 4: the time, a little bit like when the Jags were
- 23:51Speaker 4: trying to play the Chiefs last year with Kelsey, a
- 23:53Speaker 4: guy you've got to worry about or you are going
- 23:55Speaker 4: to lose.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And that's a great analogy because Tyreek Hill was the
- 24:00Speaker 3: ultimate spacer. You were so concerned about where he was
- 24:04Speaker 3: that Travis Kelcey had no problem finding his room in
- 24:07Speaker 3: the field. Same thing with all the other receivers they've
- 24:09Speaker 3: had there. That's what Ridley gives you.
- 24:11Speaker 1: All Right, let's get some more advice from John while
- 24:14Speaker 1: we can. We've got a question from Steven Nashville. He said,
- 24:17Speaker 1: last year, the Jaguars claimed five players off waivers on
- 24:20Speaker 1: cutdown Day. Is it possible that the players for all
- 24:22Speaker 1: fifty three of the final roster spots are currently on
- 24:26Speaker 1: this team.
- 24:27Speaker 4: You know, the question veers in the right way, meaning
- 24:31Speaker 4: there's gonna be less angst at cutdown day for this team,
- 24:35Speaker 4: and I think you will see less bottom of the
- 24:38Speaker 4: roster churn. I don't think it's realistic to think all
- 24:42Speaker 4: fifty three are here because usually during that cut down
- 24:46Speaker 4: you're gonna lose something. You're gonna want some special teams
- 24:48Speaker 4: guy you've seen, so maybe one, but I don't. Clearly
- 24:54Speaker 4: the roster is better, and these coaches know more about
- 24:58Speaker 4: these guys they've brought that guys they I won't be
- 25:01Speaker 4: as many, but it won't be zero.
- 25:02Speaker 3: This roster is as good as it's been in a
- 25:04Speaker 3: long time. I would think if there was a shot
- 25:07Speaker 3: ever to get all fifty three, this is the year.
- 25:09Speaker 3: You know we were talking earlier about all the young
- 25:11Speaker 3: defensive backs. I mean those are guys who from a
- 25:13Speaker 3: special team's perspective, these guys are going to build around.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I'll throw it out there, I say, they don't go
- 25:20Speaker 3: roll roster trolling unless there's this high profile pass rusher
- 25:25Speaker 3: that everybody wants to get their hands on. I say,
- 25:27Speaker 3: the fifty three or here for the first time.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Maybe in franchise, always that Tim taste and the GM
- 25:32Speaker 4: or a scout. There's always some guy out there, and
- 25:34Speaker 4: I liked Tim a year ago, so maybe. But yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 4: I think there's a chance.
- 25:38Speaker 1: There's always a chance, by the way, that might only
- 25:40Speaker 1: be one week, right, it might be. I think there's
- 25:42Speaker 1: also something we said. I think this roster in certain
- 25:44Speaker 1: position groups too, there might be a lot of people
- 25:46Speaker 1: from this team that don't make the roster here that
- 25:49Speaker 1: may end up on a roster somewhere else.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Especially on the O line. I think the O line
- 25:53Speaker 4: is deep with guys who are going to go play
- 25:55Speaker 4: somewhere else.
- 25:55Speaker 3: It may not be the best offensive line in football,
- 25:58Speaker 3: but it might be the deepest group of offensive lineman.
- 26:01Speaker 3: You go look at other training camp rosters and find
- 26:03Speaker 3: me ten guys that you can plug and play, that
- 26:06Speaker 3: can go from left to right, inside, outside like this group.
- 26:10Speaker 3: I had one coach that I was talking to the
- 26:11Speaker 3: other day said, it's rare that you've got guys like that.
- 26:14Speaker 3: There may be a lot of other teams that have
- 26:16Speaker 3: superstar players that this team may lack, but one to
- 26:19Speaker 3: ten this might be the deepest group in the league.
- 26:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Our last question is also from Steve. He's writing in
- 26:26Speaker 1: and he says, when Antonio Johnson was drafted, there was
- 26:28Speaker 1: talk of him being a slot cornerback. I feel like
- 26:30Speaker 1: a lot of experiences needed for that position.
- 26:32Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 26:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't worry about his experience in that and
- 26:39Speaker 4: I sort of left this out of we talkedut earlier
- 26:42Speaker 4: with him. I don't think it's experienced it's going to
- 26:45Speaker 4: hurt Antonio's chances to play. I just don't know if
- 26:48Speaker 4: he's a slot corner in that sense that people think.
- 26:52Speaker 4: You know, if you look at him and Trey Herndon,
- 26:55Speaker 4: Trey hearn is a cornerback, and I think it's it's
- 26:59Speaker 4: harder than people think to go from safety and then
- 27:01Speaker 4: go play the guys that you would be covering in
- 27:04Speaker 4: the slot. As a quote, nickel corner is the reason
- 27:07Speaker 4: guys play different positions in his place. So experience wise,
- 27:11Speaker 4: if a guy can play, you can play, and you
- 27:13Speaker 4: throw him out there. But I don't think it'll be
- 27:15Speaker 4: experienced as much as maybe the skill set doesn't quite
- 27:17Speaker 4: match up with what people think.
- 27:18Speaker 3: You know, fifteen sixteen years ago, we had a cornerback
- 27:21Speaker 3: group here with Rasheen Mathis and Brian Williams, and we
- 27:24Speaker 3: had a nickel corner named Terry Cousin who they drafted,
- 27:27Speaker 3: didn't draft. They signed him specifically to deal with the
- 27:29Speaker 3: Colts and the threats that the Colts preceived. And Terry
- 27:33Speaker 3: was an excellent, maybe the best nickel corner we've ever
- 27:36Speaker 3: had here in Jacksonville. And I asked him once, what
- 27:38Speaker 3: does it take. What's the difference? He said, you have
- 27:39Speaker 3: to have a mindset of being comfortable in the middle
- 27:42Speaker 3: of the field at all times because it's much more congested. True,
- 27:46Speaker 3: you're on an island outside right where you're going to
- 27:48Speaker 3: be embarrassed at times by the way this thing goes
- 27:51Speaker 3: and you have to forget and move on. But in
- 27:53Speaker 3: the middle of the field, there's so much happening. You
- 27:55Speaker 3: either are comfortable with it or you're not. And if
- 27:58Speaker 3: Antonio Johnson has it become comfortable with it by this point,
- 28:02Speaker 3: he might not ever get comfortable.
- 28:04Speaker 4: I think he can be comfortable in there. I just
- 28:07Speaker 4: I don't know if he's that pure cover guy in
- 28:08Speaker 4: the NFL listen cornerback experience to play a nickel corner,
- 28:15Speaker 4: it seems to me would matter. I could be dead wrong.
- 28:17Speaker 4: I haven't seen it on the field yet. It's just
- 28:19Speaker 4: sort of what I would I would expect.
- 28:22Speaker 3: There's a big difference between being the nickel corner and
- 28:24Speaker 3: being a.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Safety, and his role has yet to be defined, so
- 28:27Speaker 1: we will see going forward where he ends up playing.
- 28:29Speaker 1: All right, say well us, we'll talk about what we've
- 28:31Speaker 1: got coming up the rest of the week. Who's talking
- 28:33Speaker 1: today and what you have to look forward to. Jags fans,
- 28:43Speaker 1: do you want customized Jaguars furniture for your home? You
- 28:46Speaker 1: can check out zipchair dot com to rouse all customizable options.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Zipchair is furniture for fans. So we've got padded practice
- 28:55Speaker 1: is back, came back on Tuesday, We've got the stadium
- 28:58Speaker 1: scrimmage on Saturday. And Calvin Ridley speaking after practice today,
- 29:02Speaker 1: what are you guys working on, what are you looking
- 29:04Speaker 1: forward to?
- 29:05Speaker 2: What are you expecting over the weekend.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I'm starting to get ready for next Saturday's broadcast in Dallas,
- 29:12Speaker 3: my first game, our first preseason game, right, which means
- 29:15Speaker 3: I'm spending a lot of time with the second and
- 29:17Speaker 3: third teams, not as much with the starters because they're
- 29:19Speaker 3: not going to play as much. And you really have
- 29:22Speaker 3: to know these guys, so really digging in on the backups.
- 29:26Speaker 4: I'm loving for to Calvin talking to it. I always
- 29:28Speaker 4: enjoy the confidence he brings. Interesting early in camp and
- 29:33Speaker 4: talking to Josh Allen about Calvin when he called them
- 29:36Speaker 4: a dog and said, look, this guy's the real deal.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Josh was watching Calvin's first press conference back in the
- 29:45Speaker 4: middle of OTAs and Josh wasn't here, and he said,
- 29:49Speaker 4: I loved his attitude. It spoke to what I was
- 29:52Speaker 4: wanting to do. He's a guy that you wouldn't think
- 29:56Speaker 4: necessarily think of as a leader, but I think in
- 29:59Speaker 4: the locker room he is a you know, because he
- 30:01Speaker 4: just got here, but I think he I think he
- 30:04Speaker 4: can set the tone for all I thinks his locker
- 30:06Speaker 4: room in terms of his confidence.
- 30:07Speaker 3: He's a natural leader. He's the guy that people just
- 30:08Speaker 3: want to follow because they want to be around him.
- 30:10Speaker 1: And multiple players we've heard from so far to comment
- 30:12Speaker 1: on how he practices making them want to practice like that.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think in that way, so and every defensive
- 30:17Speaker 3: back who lines up against him. Practice is really hard.
- 30:21Speaker 2: You have to she want to get embarrassed.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Well, and lots of good guys have been already in camp.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, We'll keep an eye on everything. We'll
- 30:27Speaker 1: be back with you guys on Monday. As always, we
- 30:29Speaker 1: appreciate you and we'll see soon.
