Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And the Kraken, a power play goal.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Welcome to the Kraken Post Game Show, powered by the
- 0:06Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app, where you can hear the Kraken anytime, anywhere.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now for an in-depth look at tonight's Kraken game. It's
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Kraken Post Game on the Global Credit Union Kraken
- 0:17Speaker 2: Audio Network.
- 0:19Speaker 3: We're back inside of Climate Pledge Arena alongside Al Kaniski.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Everett Fitzhugh back with you.
- 0:25Speaker 3: 11 players finding the score sheet today. Four with multi-point nights,
- 0:30Speaker 3: including Mackie Samuskevich, his first and second goal as a
- 0:34Speaker 3: member of the Seattle Kraken and his first multi-goal performance
- 0:38Speaker 3: in the National Hockey League. Berkley Catton, his third multi-point
- 0:42Speaker 3: game of his NHL career with a goal. and an assist,
- 0:45Speaker 3: also goals and an assist tonight, or two-point ninth, I
- 0:48Speaker 3: should say, from Brandon Montour and Chandler Stevenson, who each
- 0:51Speaker 3: had a pair of helpers in a convincing 6-1 win. Al,
- 0:56Speaker 3: I said it before going to Shane Wright, teams like Calgary,
- 1:01Speaker 3: you know that there's going to be some challenges on
- 1:03Speaker 3: their side this year.
- 1:04Speaker 4: They're going through a rebuild. Vancouver's in that way as well.
- 1:08Speaker 3: When you look at those teams, and it's easy to say, oh, well,
- 1:10Speaker 3: it's only Calgary. Oh, you know, that team beat Vegas,
- 1:14Speaker 3: beat whoever. You beat the teams that.
- 1:16Speaker 4: You should beat.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Because the last thing you want is to be sitting
- 1:19Speaker 3: here in March, sitting here in April, six points out
- 1:22Speaker 3: of a playoff spot, knowing that you left eight points
- 1:25Speaker 3: on the table to Calgary and Vancouver and taking away
- 1:28Speaker 3: nothing from them. But if you see yourself as one
- 1:31Speaker 3: of those teams that are going to battle for a
- 1:33Speaker 3: playoff spot, you've got to.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Win the games you're supposed to win.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Well, I can count a dozen games over the past
- 1:40Speaker 5: three seasons, and I'll just actually talk about last season.
- 1:43Speaker 5: A half dozen games last season where you did not
- 1:45Speaker 5: beat the teams you're supposed to beat, and look how
- 1:48Speaker 5: close it was.
- 1:49Speaker 4: 11 points, crack, and missed the playoff spot.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Exactly. So maybe that's the difference maker is you beat
- 1:54Speaker 5: the teams you're supposed to, Everything else happens the same way.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Now you're in a playoff conversation or a playoff position.
- 2:00Speaker 5: So I think even though it's early on this season,
- 2:02Speaker 5: you haven't seen a lot of teams yet, so far
- 2:04Speaker 5: the teams you're supposed to beat, you've beaten over those
- 2:08Speaker 5: three games. And the team that probably you're not supposed
- 2:10Speaker 5: to beat, you competed with for 57 minutes of the
- 2:14Speaker 5: game up in Edmonton, came real close on a Jordan
- 2:16Speaker 5: Eberle shot to going ahead in it. So I like
- 2:20Speaker 5: the competitiveness of this team so far.
- 2:22Speaker 3: And I was going to ask you, three games in,
- 2:24Speaker 3: two against Calgary, two 6-1 wins, a hard-fought loss last
- 2:27Speaker 3: night up in Edmonton.
- 2:29Speaker 4: What have you noticed about this team?
- 2:31Speaker 3: What have you liked overall, and where do you feel
- 2:34Speaker 3: the Kraken can still have the biggest improvement going forward?
- 2:39Speaker 5: Well, I think that there's been some improvements in a
- 2:42Speaker 5: few areas that may or may not directly tie to winning,
- 2:46Speaker 5: but I think it ties to team performance, and that
- 2:49Speaker 5: is The team is more physical. The team is tougher.
- 2:53Speaker 5: I think the team is trying to play faster. The
- 2:55Speaker 5: defensive end of the ice, I think, continues to get
- 2:58Speaker 5: better now that this Lane-Lambert system is in its second
- 3:00Speaker 5: year where guys know where they're supposed to be. They
- 3:03Speaker 5: know what their jobs are, what they're supposed to do.
- 3:05Speaker 5: In fact, most of them know when they haven't done
- 3:07Speaker 5: their jobs before they even get off the ice, which
- 3:09Speaker 5: is part of it because you get off the ice
- 3:11Speaker 5: and you go, I know, I know, I know. I
- 3:12Speaker 5: was supposed to have that guy there. So I think
- 3:15Speaker 5: that's part of it as well is it gets just
- 3:17Speaker 5: ingrained into your mind that, it almost becomes second nature
- 3:20Speaker 5: playing that style of hockey. So that's been a big
- 3:23Speaker 5: improvement as well. And again, small sample size, don't DM me.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Three games in, goaltending looks great.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I was getting ready to say, we've said this before,
- 3:31Speaker 3: both you and I on the air, off the air,
- 3:34Speaker 3: on various radio talk shows that typically the first 10
- 3:39Speaker 3: games of the season, you're going to see a 50-50,
- 3:41Speaker 3: maybe 60-40 split, but you're looking for one of those
- 3:44Speaker 3: goaltenders to take the reins. But so far tonight, even
- 3:47Speaker 3: in the loss last night, Phillip Grubauer looks strong. I'm
- 3:50Speaker 3: curious what Lane Lambert does Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But the Kraken have gotten three really strong goaltending performances,
- 3:58Speaker 3: and it's resulted in four out of six points here
- 4:00Speaker 3: in the standings. We'll step aside one more time, come back,
- 4:03Speaker 3: and wrap up from the press box after this 6-1
- 4:05Speaker 3: Kraken win on the Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.

- 6:22Speaker 3: For the final time tonight, welcome inside of Climate Pledge
- 6:25Speaker 3: Arena alongside Al Koniski, Everett Fitzhugh with you. The Kraken
- 6:28Speaker 3: with their second 6-1 win over the Calgary Flames here
- 6:32Speaker 3: this season. They now improve to 2-1-0 on this young
- 6:36Speaker 3: 84 game campaign.
- 6:38Speaker 4: The Kraken winning in their home opener.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Big tilt against the Vegas Golden Knights coming up on Tuesday.
- 6:45Speaker 3: But the Kraken are going to revel in this one
- 6:46Speaker 3: at least for a little bit. They'll have an off
- 6:48Speaker 3: day tomorrow. and then they'll get back to morning skate
- 6:51Speaker 3: on Tuesday and prepare for the Golden Knights. 6.40 face-off
- 6:55Speaker 3: time here for the Kraken and the Golden Knights. Al Kaniski,
- 6:59Speaker 3: over to you.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Absolutely. Well, key takeaways for me tonight were the goaltending
- 7:03Speaker 5: delta was huge. Joey Decord with a 9.70 save percentage.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Dustin Wolfe with a 7.78. The Kraken able to slice
- 7:11Speaker 5: and dice him all night, turning them into Swiss cheese
- 7:14Speaker 5: on their shots. Secondly... Joey DeCourt himself after the second
- 7:19Speaker 5: period had stopped 45 of 46 Calgary shots at that
- 7:23Speaker 5: point in the game. Obviously, he gave up one on
- 7:24Speaker 5: the power play in the third period, but feeling really
- 7:27Speaker 5: confident against these flames. I talked about hitting a little bit.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Douglas going into that third period, he had four hits.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Larson had four hits, and Bobby McMahon had four himself
- 7:36Speaker 5: in addition to four shots on goal and obviously the
- 7:39Speaker 5: goal itself as well. So I love the physicality coupled
- 7:42Speaker 5: with the offense there from Bobby McMahon. and then Berkley Catton,
- 7:45Speaker 5: one goal, one assist, really showing the confidence. I'm going
- 7:49Speaker 5: to say this like a parent. It's like watching your
- 7:51Speaker 5: kid grow up. You know, like you were proud to
- 7:54Speaker 5: see him get into the league last year, and you
- 7:56Speaker 5: were proud to see him get in shifts, and now
- 7:58Speaker 5: you're starting to see him contribute on a regular basis,
- 8:01Speaker 5: not hesitate when he has opportunities, and really becoming a
- 8:04Speaker 5: contributing factor on this team. Three stars of the game,
- 8:09Speaker 5: Mama K's three stars. Berkley Catton was your third star.
- 8:12Speaker 5: He had a goal and one assist. He was plus
- 8:14Speaker 5: two on the night, just mentioning him above. Joey Decord
- 8:17Speaker 5: as well, also talking about him stopping 32 of 33.
- 8:19Speaker 5: He was your second star, posting a 9-7-0 save percentage.
- 8:24Speaker 5: And the number one star tonight, didn't talk about him
- 8:26Speaker 5: enough in my key takeaways, Mackie Samuskiewicz. Two goals, plus two,
- 8:30Speaker 5: three shots on goal. Loved the way he played as
- 8:33Speaker 5: well tonight. Three stars of the game brought to you
- 8:35Speaker 5: by Triple A of Washington, who give you triple the savings,
- 8:39Speaker 5: triple the adventures, and triple the the peace of mind.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Every time you're on the road, join at AAAWOD.com.
- 8:45Speaker 3: That'll do it here for us from the press box
- 8:47Speaker 3: inside of Climate Pledge Arena. The Kraken with a 6-1
- 8:51Speaker 3: win over the Calgary Flames. I'm looking forward to the
- 8:54Speaker 3: Kraken's first non-Canadian opponent of the season.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Four preseason games. What are you saying, partner?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Listen, I love it. I love you, man. I love
- 9:04Speaker 3: our neighbors to the north, but I want to see
- 9:06Speaker 3: some other teams.
- 9:07Speaker 4: So Vegas coming in here on Tuesday.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And then the Kraken on their way to a road
- 9:12Speaker 3: trip after that. They'll see Detroit, Washington, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Florida.
- 9:17Speaker 3: But first, we go down to Mike Benton, who will
- 9:20Speaker 3: take you home the rest of the way.
- 9:22Speaker 10: You mean to tell me they're going to face somebody
- 9:24Speaker 10: else besides Calgary?
- 9:26Speaker 5: I can't believe it. I had to go back and.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Check the schedule. Color me shocked, Michael.
- 9:29Speaker 10: It's coming here. It's coming on Tuesday. Fellas, great call.
- 9:32Speaker 10: Thank you very much once again. Indeed, as we got to,
- 9:36Speaker 10: the kids are all right, and the Kraken tonight didn't
- 9:39Speaker 10: win a game. They put on a show. The young kids,
- 9:43Speaker 10: ages 23 or younger, Berkley Catton, Mackie Samuskevich, Maddie Beneers,
- 9:47Speaker 10: Shane Wright, six points combined this evening as the Kraken
- 9:51Speaker 10: now have won their last two home openers and also
- 9:53Speaker 10: established the largest margin of victory in a home opener. 6-1,
- 9:58Speaker 10: your final score as the Kraken cruise again past the Flames.
- 10:02Speaker 10: And this offense, 13 goals in three games. Is it
- 10:06Speaker 10: Flames-induced or is it Kraken-induced? Well, for the Kraken, they
- 10:10Speaker 10: don't care. They look solid, they look sharp out of
- 10:12Speaker 10: the gate, and they're looking for more. Heading into this
- 10:15Speaker 10: next week. So, glad you're with us. We have more
- 10:17Speaker 10: to come, including our highlights, our scores, more reaction also
- 10:21Speaker 10: from back downstairs later. Plus, also, we'll get to your
- 10:23Speaker 10: text messages, 49451 via the Tacoma Dodge text line. Again, 49451.
- 10:30Speaker 10: As a Kraken, improved to 2-1 on the young season,
- 10:33Speaker 10: beating the Calgary Flames 6-1. That's your final score from
- 10:37Speaker 10: Climate Pledge Arena. We're back in a bit. You're listening

- 14:18Speaker 10: for this evening, these fans have been waiting for this
- 14:21Speaker 10: kind of hockey for a long, long time, a six-month
- 14:24Speaker 10: waiting period for an official regular season game in the books,
- 14:27Speaker 10: and the Kraken put on an absolute show this evening
- 14:31Speaker 10: and wasted little time getting going as they cruised 6-1
- 14:34Speaker 10: for the win over the Calgary Flames and beating Calgary
- 14:38Speaker 10: for the second time in three games to open the season.
- 14:41Speaker 10: Needless to say, they've been waiting for this kind of
- 14:42Speaker 10: hockey They are wearing the flames out at this point
- 14:45Speaker 10: with 12 combined goals on the board in two matchups.
- 14:49Speaker 10: Mike Benton again with you, back for the Coors Light

- 15:40Speaker 10: the game, this place waiting a long time to get
- 15:43Speaker 10: loud about something after going through six months of no
- 15:47Speaker 10: regular season hockey for the summer. And how long would
- 15:50Speaker 10: this place have to wait to get loud from the
- 15:53Speaker 10: opening puck drop?
- 15:55Speaker 4: Here comes Kako, rink wide across for Shane Wright.
- 15:57Speaker 5: Intercepted, knocked down, Burberry Cat scores!
- 16:07Speaker 1: Berkley Catton follows the play and buries in the rebound.
- 16:11Speaker 1: The first goal at Climate Pledge Arena this season belongs
- 16:15Speaker 1: to number.
- 16:16Speaker 4: 27 in blue.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And the Kraken on top, 1-0, 17-38 to play in
- 16:19Speaker 1: the first.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Well, it's Kapokako down that left side. He's trying to
- 16:24Speaker 5: feed Shane Wright.
- 16:25Speaker 4: That puck gets deflected to Berkley Catton.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Coming from right to left, he puts that puck onto
- 16:30Speaker 5: Dustin Wolfe. Top shelf, glove side, 1-0 Kraken.
- 16:35Speaker 10: It took Bertley Catton last year 28 games to pick
- 16:38Speaker 10: up his first career NHL goal. This time, he's got
- 16:42Speaker 10: his first goal of the year in game number three.
- 16:46Speaker 10: 2-22 is all it took for him and the Kraken
- 16:48Speaker 10: to get on the board for the home faithful. That
- 16:51Speaker 10: made it 1-0, the goal coming unassisted. After that, Mackie
- 16:56Speaker 10: Samaskewicz stepping into the spotlight, and what would he do
- 17:00Speaker 10: with the lights getting bright on number 11?
- 17:04Speaker 4: A stickless Joey the Cord for a moment.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Now Montour will kick the stick back into the goal crease,
- 17:09Speaker 3: and Joey the Cord picks.
- 17:10Speaker 5: It back up.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Now Mackie Samaskewicz, what a move!
- 17:12Speaker 12: He scores!
- 17:20Speaker 1: Mackie Samaskevich fighting his way over the blue line. He
- 17:25Speaker 1: stayed with the puck and he finds the back of
- 17:28Speaker 1: the net for his first goal in Kraken Colors.
- 17:31Speaker 4: It's a 2-0 Seattle lead, 15-20 to play in the first.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Well, this was a lob pass by Brandon Montour down
- 17:38Speaker 5: at the bottom of the circles in his own end.
- 17:41Speaker 5: He flips that puck all the way up the middle
- 17:43Speaker 5: of the far blue line where Samaskevich gets it in
- 17:45Speaker 5: full speed, blowing past the Flames defenseman.
- 17:48Speaker 4: 0.5 hole on Wolf, 2-0 Kraken.
- 17:53Speaker 10: Mackie Samuskevich says hello to Seattle and did so in
- 17:57Speaker 10: dramatic fashion with some flair. 4.40 the time of his
- 18:00Speaker 10: first goal in Kraken colors. Brandon Montour, Riker Evans had
- 18:04Speaker 10: the assist. As he didn't just blow past Kevin Ball
- 18:07Speaker 10: and Zach Whitecloud, he left a vapor trail behind that
- 18:11Speaker 10: defensive pair. That made it 2-0. The Kraken then bumped
- 18:15Speaker 10: the lead to 3-0. Bobby McMahon now with goals in
- 18:18Speaker 10: back-to-back games. His second goal of the season going bar
- 18:21Speaker 10: down on Dustin Wolfe at 740. Chandler Stevenson had the
- 18:25Speaker 10: assist on the play. He's got now points in six
- 18:27Speaker 10: straight games of his career against Calgary. And McMahon, by
- 18:31Speaker 10: the way, with that goal, he's got 12 since going
- 18:34Speaker 10: back to last season on March 6th. Nobody on this
- 18:38Speaker 10: Kraken roster has more than him in that span. So
- 18:41Speaker 10: just like night number one for the Kraken against the Flames,
- 18:45Speaker 10: night number two goes off with the exact same bang.
- 18:49Speaker 10: Three goals in the opening 20 minutes of play to
- 18:52Speaker 10: establish a 3-0 lead. And the Kraken had this game
- 18:56Speaker 10: firmly established. in their grip. But into the second period,
- 18:59Speaker 10: they weren't stopping there as Berkley Catton hit the ice.
- 19:02Speaker 10: And what would his line do with open ice?
- 19:05Speaker 4: Berkley Catton now in. He's got some speed. Berkley Catton
- 19:08Speaker 4: on the right side.
- 19:09Speaker 3: There's a backhand.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Shane Wright scores!
- 19:18Speaker 5: Oh, my goodness.
- 19:19Speaker 4: The price was right on that.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Shane Wright got the puck in tight space.
- 19:27Speaker 4: He bobbled it for a moment.
- 19:30Speaker 1: A spinorama five-hole backhand on Dustin Wolfe. And the crack
- 19:36Speaker 1: it up by four for nothing with 8.02 to play
- 19:40Speaker 1: here in the second.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Well, it all starts with Berkeley Cat down that right side.
- 19:44Speaker 5: He's a left-handed shot, so he's probably not thinking drive
- 19:47Speaker 5: the net, but he wants to push those Calgary defensemen back.
- 19:50Speaker 5: He takes them all the way down to the dot,
- 19:51Speaker 5: puts the brakes on, feeds right in the center, right
- 19:55Speaker 5: with a no-look backhand shot on net, beats Dustin Wolfe.
- 19:58Speaker 4: 4-0 Seattle.
- 20:00Speaker 10: That's what skill does, and the Kraken bumping their lead
- 20:03Speaker 10: to 4-0 at 11.58 with Shane Wright getting his first
- 20:06Speaker 10: on the season. It was a beauty. Berkeley Catton, Vince
- 20:10Speaker 10: Dunn with the helper. Then Mackie Samuskevich made it a
- 20:13Speaker 10: multi-goal game for him. 5-0 Kraken with the lead at 19.34.
- 20:15Speaker 10: Matty Beneers, Jared McCann, the assist. Third period, Calgary spoiled
- 20:21Speaker 10: the shutout at 14.25. Morgan Frost, power play goal from
- 20:24Speaker 10: Matt Vagrid and Joel Farabee. The captain, Jordan Eberle, then
- 20:27Speaker 10: putting on the finishing touches. A 15-0-4 from Chandler, Stevenson,
- 20:31Speaker 10: and Brandon Montour to make it 6-1. That holding up
- 20:34Speaker 10: as your final score, Joey Decord gets a win in
- 20:37Speaker 10: that 32-save effort. The loss to Dustin Wolfe, six goals
- 20:41Speaker 10: on 27 shots. Time now for the Coors Light Chillest
- 20:44Speaker 10: Moments of the game. Kraken fans, again, you can win
- 20:46Speaker 10: your chance to sit in the Coors Light silver seats.
- 20:49Speaker 10: Go to CoorsLight.com forward slash CoorsLight. Seattle Kraken to enter.
- 20:52Speaker 10: Must be 21 years of age. No purchase necessary. Coors Light,
- 20:57Speaker 10: choose chill. Celebrate responsibly. Without question, moment one. Mackie Samuskevich.
- 21:04Speaker 10: saying hello to the crowd here in Seattle with a
- 21:07Speaker 10: no-doubter and a beauty of his first goal with the
- 21:10Speaker 10: Kraken getting right behind the defense and a backhand deep
- 21:13Speaker 10: beating Dustin Wolfe. Speed kills in this game, and that's
- 21:17Speaker 10: a big reason why the Kraken got him, and he
- 21:19Speaker 10: certainly showed it off with plenty of flair. His first
- 21:22Speaker 10: of two goals on the night made it a 2-0 lead.
- 21:25Speaker 10: Then Joey Decord, well, you could ask, where would the
- 21:28Speaker 10: Kraken be without him as he faced this challenge in
- 21:31Speaker 10: period three?
- 21:32Speaker 4: Here is Frost across Coronado in front. Sharon Govich right on.
- 21:37Speaker 16: And Joey Decord.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Shuts the door.
- 21:40Speaker 10: That close for Joey Decord to a shutout, but yet
- 21:43Speaker 10: the Kraken will take a 32 save effort out of him.
- 21:46Speaker 10: He is 2-0 on the young season. Time now for
- 21:49Speaker 10: the big win brought to you by the Evergreen Council
- 21:51Speaker 10: on Problem Gambling. And to the Big Apple we go
- 21:54Speaker 10: with the Rangers taking on the Mammoth. And the Rangers, again,
- 21:58Speaker 10: looking to put their best foot forward.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Zibanejad finds a loose puck. Zibanejad.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Lafreniere shoots. What a save. Rebound scores.
- 22:07Speaker 14: Gabe Perrault.
- 22:08Speaker 4: The Rangers take the lead.
- 22:12Speaker 10: Gabe Perot, one of four goal scorers for the Rangers.
- 22:14Speaker 10: That call courtesy ESPN New York 880 AM as the
- 22:18Speaker 10: Rangers 3-1 on the young season. They beat Utah 4-2.
- 22:22Speaker 10: Ellie Tolvanen, remember him? He's got now three goals for
- 22:25Speaker 10: the Rangers. Vladislav Gavrikov, JT Miller also scored. The Evergreen

- 31:13Speaker 10: Calgary Flames. And again, 4-9-4-5-1, the place of Texas here
- 31:18Speaker 10: on the Tacoma Dodge text line. Who impressed you most
- 31:22Speaker 10: with the victory for this evening?
- 31:24Speaker 4: 4-9-4-5-1.
- 31:24Speaker 10: I've got a feeling a lot of you have got
- 31:29Speaker 10: number 11 on your mind. Maybe some of you have
- 31:31Speaker 10: number 27 on your mind. Maybe the goaltender, that's also
- 31:35Speaker 10: going to be a big part of the equation, not
- 31:38Speaker 10: just tonight, not just this month, but for the entire season. 4-9-4-5-1.
- 31:45Speaker 10: And I think maybe you can break it down like this.
- 31:47Speaker 10: Do you look at three games in where the Kraken
- 31:50Speaker 10: scored 13 goals as a matter of 12 of those
- 31:54Speaker 10: 13 have come against a Flames team that is going
- 31:57Speaker 10: to miss the playoffs and really take their lumps here
- 31:59Speaker 10: potentially as a lottery team? Or are you more convinced
- 32:03Speaker 10: about this as a Kraken team that is really coming
- 32:06Speaker 10: together no matter who they're going.
- 32:07Speaker 5: To face, 4-9-4-5-1.
- 32:08Speaker 10: And I can't wait to hear your reaction once again
- 32:12Speaker 10: because this is what drives this bus for each and
- 32:15Speaker 10: every night, your conversation, your thoughts, your convictions as well.
- 32:21Speaker 10: We're going to get to a lot of this here, 4-9-4-5-1.
- 32:24Speaker 10: Tacoma Dodge text line again, Tacoma Dodge Chrysler Jeep ran
- 32:27Speaker 10: by the corner of 38th and South Tacoma Way, the
- 32:30Speaker 10: intersection of savings.
- 32:32Speaker 5: Without further ado.
- 32:34Speaker 10: Al Kaniski up here on the set once again to
- 32:36Speaker 10: close this one out. We had a long day.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Yes, we did.
- 32:40Speaker 10: We had a fun day. My goodness, for a home opener,
- 32:43Speaker 10: this team didn't just get a win, Al. They put
- 32:47Speaker 10: on a show.
- 32:47Speaker 5: They absolutely did. And listen, I don't take anything away
- 32:51Speaker 5: that this was Calgary and they're in a rebuilding year. Listen,
- 32:54Speaker 5: they played just as strong up in Edmonton last night.
- 32:58Speaker 5: They were real close to earning a point in that game.
- 33:00Speaker 5: And there's an argument to say, They should have won
- 33:04Speaker 5: the game had they put a few more pucks on net.
- 33:06Speaker 5: So I like the way they've played over the first
- 33:09Speaker 5: three games. I think that the fact that they just
- 33:11Speaker 5: played a weaker team in two of those three games
- 33:15Speaker 5: got them wins, but it wasn't a tight 2-1 win.
- 33:18Speaker 5: They won those handedly. And like we talked about in
- 33:20Speaker 5: the postgame, how many times last year, Mike, were there
- 33:23Speaker 5: games where we thought, here's a game the Kraken need
- 33:25Speaker 5: to win, and they didn't? And how close were they
- 33:28Speaker 5: to get into the playoffs? So You enter this year,
- 33:31Speaker 5: you play a team you're supposed to win two times,
- 33:32Speaker 5: you beat them two times, and you beat them handily.
- 33:35Speaker 5: That's an important way to start.
- 33:36Speaker 10: Mackie Samuskevich had two goals. Berkeley Catton had one. Bobby
- 33:40Speaker 10: McMahon had one. Shane Wright, Jordan Eberle. There's kind of
- 33:43Speaker 10: a familiar theme here to all of this, and we'll
- 33:45Speaker 10: get to it here in a little bit. But back
- 33:48Speaker 10: to your point earlier, Al, as, again, the Kraken beat
- 33:50Speaker 10: Calgary 6-1. We're going to also hear from Joey Decord,
- 33:53Speaker 10: among others, here a little bit later on. You mentioned
- 33:57Speaker 10: how many times did this end on the flip side
- 34:00Speaker 10: for the Kraken? I think for me it goes back
- 34:02Speaker 10: to period one. This team came out on their toes
- 34:07Speaker 10: for the second game of a back-to-back. Matty Beniers' line
- 34:11Speaker 10: looked ready. Berkeley Catton's line looked ready. Mackie Samaskevich scored
- 34:16Speaker 10: a goal that just blew the top off of so
- 34:18Speaker 10: many fans here in this building. And granted, the period
- 34:22Speaker 10: looked maybe rather subdued. Calgary looked slow. The Kraken, though,
- 34:27Speaker 10: did not, but a roundabout way to get to what
- 34:29Speaker 10: you mentioned. How many times were we saying the exact
- 34:33Speaker 10: opposite of how the Kraken came out in the first
- 34:36Speaker 10: five minutes, 10 minutes, even 15 minutes on the second
- 34:40Speaker 10: game of a back-to-back?
- 34:41Speaker 5: Yeah, well, that's just it, too, is, you know, back-to-backs
- 34:44Speaker 5: have been a challenge in past seasons, and, you know,
- 34:47Speaker 5: this was not a back-to-back where you're playing both at
- 34:51Speaker 5: home or both the same team on the road. You
- 34:54Speaker 5: had to travel last night, and... The guys, I thought,
- 34:57Speaker 5: performed well based on that. So that was, I guess, reinvigorating.
- 35:02Speaker 5: The other thing is, if you look at these six goals, yeah,
- 35:04Speaker 5: Jordan Eberle got one as well, and Shane Ray on
- 35:07Speaker 5: the board. But Mackie Samuskevich gets two. Bobby McMahon gets one.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Berkeley Catton gets one. Two years ago, these guys weren't
- 35:14Speaker 5: on the roster.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Yes.
- 35:15Speaker 5: And so you think about this team needing to score more.
- 35:18Speaker 5: It's been a big pusher over the past couple of years. Well,
- 35:20Speaker 5: there's four guys right there that are now a part
- 35:22Speaker 5: of this roster that that are putting pucks in the net,
- 35:25Speaker 5: and that's great to see.
- 35:25Speaker 10: How many times have we heard before, the kids are coming?
- 35:30Speaker 10: The kids are coming. I like that you.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Refer to Bobby McMahon as a kid, but okay.
- 35:35Speaker 10: I think my point in all of this is that
- 35:38Speaker 10: four of your six goals scored tonight were by players
- 35:43Speaker 10: age 23 or younger on this roster. That goes back
- 35:46Speaker 10: to what Jason Botterill said. There could be as many
- 35:49Speaker 10: as eight on this roster tonight, But there's once again
- 35:52Speaker 10: a look inside to where this team has to grow
- 35:55Speaker 10: and has to develop, and it comes from your youth.
- 35:58Speaker 10: And my goodness, Berkley Catton looks a lot better to
- 36:00Speaker 10: begin this season as well. He's figured things out at
- 36:03Speaker 10: the NHL level, but his shifts are really becoming must-see
- 36:08Speaker 10: stuff now. And then Mackie Samaskewicz, we heard it before.
- 36:11Speaker 10: Speed burns, speed kills, but my goodness, he left a
- 36:15Speaker 10: vapor trail on that first goal.
- 36:16Speaker 5: Well, you know, as having a job that requires you
- 36:20Speaker 5: to watch each and every game, you get to see
- 36:22Speaker 5: each and every player, each and every shift. And, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 5: watching Berkeley Catton and his development over the course of
- 36:28Speaker 5: last season, I would say he wasn't as confident as
- 36:32Speaker 5: he is right now. I wouldn't say he wasn't as
- 36:33Speaker 5: strong as he is right now. He wasn't as, you know,
- 36:36Speaker 5: as quick to shoot the puck. All that's off the
- 36:39Speaker 5: board now over the last three games. You see that confidence.
- 36:41Speaker 5: You see that shot. You see the way he anticipates
- 36:45Speaker 5: plays developing with bump passes. And I think the ceiling,
- 36:49Speaker 5: you know, he obviously hasn't even hit that ceiling yet
- 36:51Speaker 5: for the NHL. So it's nice to see how his
- 36:56Speaker 5: development's coming along. And I think we're going to see
- 36:58Speaker 5: a lot more of it over the course of the season.
- 37:00Speaker 10: Multi-point game tonight for Chandler Stevenson. Multi-point games also for
- 37:04Speaker 10: Mackie Samaskevich, Berkeley Catton, Brandon Montour as well. Again, 49451
- 37:08Speaker 10: Tacoma Dodge text line. I want to hear who impressed
- 37:12Speaker 10: you most in the victory for this evening. I want
- 37:16Speaker 10: to get back to, I think, three things I was
- 37:18Speaker 10: looking out for. Number one was going to be a
- 37:21Speaker 10: strong first period because, again, you're playing on your second leg,
- 37:24Speaker 10: a back-to-back. How many times have we said before you
- 37:29Speaker 10: play in a building the previous night, you travel, you
- 37:32Speaker 10: get into bed late, depending upon how late it is.
- 37:35Speaker 10: That can wear not just on the body, but also
- 37:38Speaker 10: here for the mind. So I think in some ways
- 37:41Speaker 10: for me, this led to the belief of he had
- 37:44Speaker 10: to win the first 30 minutes. It was going to
- 37:47Speaker 10: be a race to about roughly 10 minutes left in
- 37:50Speaker 10: the second period because both these teams played last night.
- 37:54Speaker 10: Calgary had the later game, and I think it certainly showed.
- 37:56Speaker 10: But could you get ahead by that 10-minute mark? Because
- 38:00Speaker 10: usually by then, You see the legs go. Then you
- 38:04Speaker 10: see the brain go. So if the Kraken can get ahead,
- 38:08Speaker 10: that's where your structure comes into play. And you can
- 38:12Speaker 10: put the final nail in the coffin, so to speak,
- 38:14Speaker 10: here for a game like this.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Well, there's a big part of this game that's psychological. And,
- 38:17Speaker 5: you know, as a player, you're certainly thinking about it
- 38:21Speaker 5: on the ice during the game. But, you know, big picture,
- 38:24Speaker 5: you're playing a team, like you said, that got in.
- 38:27Speaker 5: I heard 2 a.m. last night is when they either
- 38:29Speaker 5: got in or heads hit the pillow in it. and
- 38:31Speaker 5: you hope it was heads hit the pillow and not
- 38:33Speaker 5: to actually get in.
- 38:34Speaker 10: And that's crazy because they were only in Vancouver, but
- 38:36Speaker 10: they had border crossing also.
- 38:38Speaker 5: I think there was a border issue or whatever, and
- 38:40Speaker 5: that's the challenge you have when you play a second
- 38:41Speaker 5: of a back-to-back and you have to cross the border.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Seattle came back last night from Edmonton. They, too, had
- 38:47Speaker 5: to cross the border as well, but they had an
- 38:48Speaker 5: earlier game. I think what happens, if you're able to
- 38:52Speaker 5: jump on a team early in that first period, even
- 38:54Speaker 5: if it's the first goal, the second goal, Those doubts
- 38:57Speaker 5: start to creep in. Those excuses start to creep in. Hey,
- 39:00Speaker 5: we got back late last night. Hey, we're in a
- 39:02Speaker 5: rebuilding year. Hey, hey, hey. And I think that the
- 39:05Speaker 5: more you can feed those excuses, the more you start
- 39:08Speaker 5: playing downhill the rest of the game. And I think
- 39:10Speaker 5: getting three goals in the first period for the Kraken
- 39:13Speaker 5: helped Calgary start to think about those excuses.
- 39:16Speaker 10: Kraken did not get a power play for the entire evening.
- 39:20Speaker 10: Calgary didn't take a single penalty as well. Calgary goes
- 39:24Speaker 10: one of two on the man advantage. And I think
- 39:26Speaker 10: the Kraken pass a test here the first time out
- 39:29Speaker 10: on the PK. Mackie Samaskevich went off for high sticking
- 39:32Speaker 10: the Kraken then didn't take another penalty and put a
- 39:36Speaker 10: man in the box until 1333 left or gone by
- 39:41Speaker 10: in the third period and by that time the game
- 39:43Speaker 10: was already academic so I think based on that scale
- 39:46Speaker 10: what did you make out of the penalty kill now
- 39:47Speaker 10: for the third straight night.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Yeah, listen, the kill there in the third period where
- 39:51Speaker 5: they actually, where Faraby scored the goal, it's one of
- 39:55Speaker 5: those situations where, again, I'll go back to the psychological part.
- 39:59Speaker 5: Are you as willing to throw your body in front
- 40:01Speaker 5: of a shot from the point when you're up 6-0
- 40:04Speaker 5: or 5-0, I think it was at that point. Probably not.
- 40:07Speaker 5: You certainly don't want to convey that, but I think
- 40:10Speaker 5: more shots are likely to get through in that situation,
- 40:12Speaker 5: and in that case, they did, and they were able
- 40:15Speaker 5: to capitalize on it. So, You hope you don't necessarily
- 40:18Speaker 5: see that if the game's 1-1 or something like that,
- 40:20Speaker 5: but that was the end result. It's too bad because
- 40:23Speaker 5: I think Joey Decord played well enough to earn a shutout. Unfortunately,
- 40:26Speaker 5: they beat him on that power play.
- 40:28Speaker 10: What's the biggest key for the penalty kill, you think,
- 40:30Speaker 10: just based on their structure and based on how they
- 40:33Speaker 10: had to react? Because we do see some dynamic movement,
- 40:35Speaker 10: but it often requires not just the essence of hustle,
- 40:39Speaker 10: but also for brains as well.
- 40:41Speaker 5: There's a certain amount of it that's luck as well.
- 40:44Speaker 5: The hustle was certainly there on that PK, and I
- 40:47Speaker 5: like the way the PK has looked so far. It's
- 40:49Speaker 5: been an area of opportunity for improvement this season, and
- 40:52Speaker 5: I think it's looked pretty good over the first few games.
- 40:55Speaker 5: You're always going to look at every goal that scored
- 40:57Speaker 5: against you on your penalty kill and say, what could
- 40:59Speaker 5: you have done differently? And sometimes a puck just bounces
- 41:03Speaker 5: the wrong way. It happened that way at the end
- 41:04Speaker 5: of the game up in Edmonton with the game-winning goal
- 41:06Speaker 5: by Drysaddle off of a ricochet off of a skate.
- 41:09Speaker 5: Sometimes the puck just bounces the wrong way so you
- 41:12Speaker 5: got to look at that penalty kill and figure out
- 41:14Speaker 5: what could have been done differently I'm guessing it probably
- 41:17Speaker 5: has to do with a clear that didn't happen right
- 41:19Speaker 5: before that goal was scored but those are opportunities.
- 41:23Speaker 10: Third thing I was looking for tonight were the kids
- 41:26Speaker 10: and we already went through what they did just I
- 41:29Speaker 10: think based on a surface scale but I thought you
- 41:31Speaker 10: brought up a great point earlier with Everett during the
- 41:34Speaker 10: course of the broadcast we'll see how these lines shake
- 41:36Speaker 10: out but so far I think many had to like
- 41:39Speaker 10: what Mackie Samaskevich does with Matty Benirez for obvious reasons
- 41:43Speaker 10: because they help elevate their skill. You have McCann who
- 41:46Speaker 10: can finish on the left wing, but then Berkley Catton.
- 41:50Speaker 10: What are we seeing out of him? Capo Caco and
- 41:53Speaker 10: Shane Wright that really helps put this skill in the
- 41:56Speaker 10: right place.
- 41:57Speaker 5: Well, Capo Caco was new onto that line today with
- 42:01Speaker 5: Shane Wright and Berkley Catton, and Winterton had dropped to
- 42:04Speaker 5: the fourth line. But through the course of the game,
- 42:07Speaker 5: the Lions got into a blender. I think Lane Lambert
- 42:10Speaker 5: was shuffling through wingers on that fourth line quite a bit.
- 42:13Speaker 5: We saw Sam Miskevich go out on the fourth line.
- 42:15Speaker 5: We saw Douglas go out on the fourth line, et cetera.
- 42:18Speaker 5: I think Winterton went a few times as well. But
- 42:21Speaker 5: I think as far as those kids go and who
- 42:23Speaker 5: the right combination is, I think you're going to see
- 42:26Speaker 5: Berkley Catton stay at that third-line center position. And Lane
- 42:30Speaker 5: Lambert's just trying to figure out who's the right pairing
- 42:32Speaker 5: for him on the left side or the right side,
- 42:35Speaker 5: because they like to work in pairs. Who's the right
- 42:37Speaker 5: pairing to stay with Berkley Catton over the course of
- 42:40Speaker 5: the season? And then you start feeding that third person
- 42:42Speaker 5: that only makes the other two better. You've got a
- 42:44Speaker 5: deadly line, Mike.
- 42:45Speaker 10: And I think also you bring up a great point, too,
- 42:47Speaker 10: because I also want to get to why you shuffle
- 42:49Speaker 10: through some mixing and matching on that fourth line. Originally,
- 42:53Speaker 10: it was Curtis Douglas, Freddie Goudreau, and Ryan Winterton. Curtis
- 42:56Speaker 10: Douglas played... 7.46 of ice time tonight. That was far
- 43:01Speaker 10: and away lowest on the entire team. The reason is
- 43:05Speaker 10: he plays in a specialized role. And what is that
- 43:08Speaker 10: specialized role? Plenty of muscle. By the way, he's got
- 43:13Speaker 10: five hits in this game. He had two block shots
- 43:15Speaker 10: as well. But just having that presence, I think, for me. Presence,
- 43:18Speaker 10: that's the word. And our colleague Ian Furness said this earlier,
- 43:23Speaker 10: and it was a great point. When you have a
- 43:25Speaker 10: guy who is that big, that imposing, And that threatening,
- 43:30Speaker 10: whether he is on the ice or on the bench,
- 43:32Speaker 10: your team behaves and they play an extra five inches taller.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Yeah, well, they do play an extra five inches taller.
- 43:39Speaker 5: You know who behaves is the other team. And listen,
- 43:42Speaker 5: Calgary's got some tough characters on it as well. But
- 43:45Speaker 5: I think what it stops is it stops things from
- 43:47Speaker 5: getting out of hand. And if you don't have that
- 43:51Speaker 5: presence on the team, you can be taken advantage of.
- 43:53Speaker 5: You can start taking a lot more physicality than you
- 43:56Speaker 5: want without as much of a response. And as soon
- 43:58Speaker 5: as you have that presence on the bench, it dials
- 44:01Speaker 5: it back a little bit. So, yeah, he didn't have
- 44:04Speaker 5: more than eight minutes of time on the ice, but
- 44:06Speaker 5: I think that his effect, his presence. was both important
- 44:10Speaker 5: on the ice and off the ice.
- 44:11Speaker 10: How about that hit he had back at the benches tonight?
- 44:13Speaker 5: Yeah. Oh, my goodness. That was a beauty.
- 44:17Speaker 4: Oh, my goodness.
- 44:18Speaker 10: That makes a team certainly put that in the memory banks. Again,
- 44:21Speaker 10: 6-1 Calgary, or the Kraken beat Calgary, and the Kraken
- 44:24Speaker 10: have scored now 13 goals in the first three games.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Once again, 4-9, 4-5-1.
- 44:30Speaker 10: The place here to get at us here for your reaction.
- 44:32Speaker 10: I want to hear who impressed you most in tonight's win, 4-9, 4-5-1.
- 44:37Speaker 10: Let's jump into things right now. 4-2-5 saying it sounds
- 44:41Speaker 10: like there are some good guys here from the WHL
- 44:43Speaker 10: that are making an impact here on this game, that
- 44:46Speaker 10: from the 4-2-5. I believe the reference at the top,
- 44:50Speaker 10: of course, would go to Berkley Catton after what he
- 44:54Speaker 10: did in Spokane, but I just go back and think of,
- 44:58Speaker 10: you know, how much Catton played last year on the wing.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Now he's moving here to center.
- 45:05Speaker 10: To add to this, it's different playing center in the
- 45:08Speaker 10: NHL because on the wing, you're a goal scorer. You've
- 45:12Speaker 10: got to pay attention to board battles as well. As
- 45:15Speaker 10: a centerman, if you want to thrive in the NHL
- 45:18Speaker 10: and be a playmaker, it's not just being able to
- 45:20Speaker 10: be a distributor, but also taking care of 200 feet
- 45:25Speaker 10: of the ice. Al, what I love about that goal
- 45:28Speaker 10: that Shane Wright scored, not just for the exquisite spinorama finish,
- 45:34Speaker 10: but you have Katton who's got the puck, originally right
- 45:37Speaker 10: back in the neutral zone. He's got to either make
- 45:39Speaker 10: two decisions, chip it or make a play. He decides
- 45:43Speaker 10: to make a play. Hit on the afterburners, went to
- 45:47Speaker 10: the outside, and hit the brakes at the circle and
- 45:51Speaker 10: put it right on a tee for Shane Wright.
- 45:53Speaker 5: I mean, wait, let's not take anything away from Shane Wright.
- 45:57Speaker 5: I don't know if he put it on a tee.
- 45:58Speaker 5: He put it in a place where Shane Wright couldn't
- 46:00Speaker 5: shoot it. So Shane Wright says, hold my beer. He
- 46:04Speaker 5: found the open man, though. Well, he found him. Maybe
- 46:07Speaker 5: it wasn't forehand. He had to spin around and put
- 46:09Speaker 5: a backhand on that, which, again, is a sign of
- 46:11Speaker 5: a goal scorer. Hey, that's a great pass. Thank you
- 46:14Speaker 5: for giving me the puck. That's not going to be
- 46:16Speaker 5: the shot I need to get off here. So I'm
- 46:18Speaker 5: going to spin around and put it on net. So
- 46:19Speaker 5: I thought that was a great finish by Shane Wright.
- 46:21Speaker 10: 206 saying pretty impressed here by Mackie Samuskevich. We're getting
- 46:25Speaker 10: a few of these in here for tonight. 360, the
- 46:30Speaker 10: entire team impressed me this evening. They played a full
- 46:32Speaker 10: 60 minutes, and the way they played made me forget
- 46:35Speaker 10: that we had a game as well last night. One
- 46:38Speaker 10: of these days, the Kraken will beat the Edmonton Oilers
- 46:40Speaker 10: at Rogers Place.
- 46:41Speaker 5: One of these days.
- 46:43Speaker 10: One of these days. But for now, I think when
- 46:46Speaker 10: you go back up and down the lineup and the
- 46:48Speaker 10: fact the Kraken were outshot, 33-27 for this game. A
- 46:53Speaker 10: shot on goal is not always a shot on goal,
- 46:55Speaker 10: and I think the most important thing for me is that,
- 46:58Speaker 10: was Joey Decord flopping in net? Did he appear to
- 47:02Speaker 10: be in grave danger on nearly every scoring chance? To me,
- 47:05Speaker 10: the answer was no, and you are totally fine with
- 47:08Speaker 10: him handling those kind of saves.
- 47:10Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. I didn't think there was anything that leaked
- 47:12Speaker 5: through on him. I didn't think there were any situations
- 47:15Speaker 5: where he overplayed a puck behind. He actually had his
- 47:17Speaker 5: stick lifted or almost lifted once. Maybe that one was
- 47:20Speaker 5: right on the edge. I think it was the first period.
- 47:22Speaker 5: But nothing that he wasn't able to control from a
- 47:24Speaker 5: rebound standpoint. So a very solid game for Joey Decord.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Great building game for him. You know, goaltenders are very
- 47:31Speaker 5: critical of themselves. I'm sure he's going to look at
- 47:33Speaker 5: tape and figure out what he could have done differently
- 47:35Speaker 5: or done better. But I liked his game tonight. But, Mikey,
- 47:39Speaker 5: going back to the physicality, just looking at some of
- 47:41Speaker 5: the final stats here. Coming into the game, Adam Larson
- 47:44Speaker 5: led this team in hits. Yeah. So he's a defenseman.
- 47:50Speaker 5: The top forward going into the game with hits was
- 47:52Speaker 5: Curtis Douglas. At the end of the night, tonight, Adam
- 47:56Speaker 5: Larson with five hits, Curtis Douglas five hits. So they
- 48:00Speaker 5: remain neck and neck as far as physicality on this team.
- 48:02Speaker 5: And I'm saying this because Jacob Melanson's on the lineup
- 48:05Speaker 5: right now, and he plays a big role in that physicality.
- 48:08Speaker 5: So it's nice to see guys like Adam Larson– maybe
- 48:11Speaker 5: covering some of that loss a little bit. He had
- 48:13Speaker 5: a huge hit on Adam Klapka midway through the game
- 48:16Speaker 5: that put Klapka on his back, which was huge. But
- 48:19Speaker 5: another guy in that mix is Bobby McMahon. Bobby McMahon
- 48:23Speaker 5: had four hits. How many shots on him? He had six.
- 48:26Speaker 5: Give me as many players on my team that are going.
- 48:28Speaker 10: To pay that man his money.
- 48:30Speaker 4: He got paid.
- 48:31Speaker 5: Give me as many guys on my team as possible
- 48:33Speaker 5: that are going to go out and get four hits,
- 48:36Speaker 5: six shots, and get a goal to boot. Those are
- 48:38Speaker 5: real hockey players. All right.
- 48:39Speaker 10: Down to the room we go. Crack and win 6-1
- 48:42Speaker 10: over Calgary. And here's more reaction with goaltender Joey Decord.
- 48:52Speaker 21: Joey, there's certain nights when it probably feels like the
- 48:55Speaker 21: puck is going to stay out of your net. Is
- 48:57Speaker 21: this one of those nights where the puck was just
- 48:59Speaker 21: finally different?
- 49:00Speaker 16: Yeah, we love those nights. Those are the best nights
- 49:02Speaker 16: as a goalie.
- 49:03Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, honestly, the energy was absolutely nuts in
- 49:07Speaker 15: the arena tonight.
- 49:07Speaker 5: It was so loud.
- 49:08Speaker 16: It was fun to be back playing in our home arena.
- 49:11Speaker 15: Yeah, it was a bit of a frantic first period,
- 49:14Speaker 15: I felt like, but once it calmed down, we were
- 49:17Speaker 15: up 3-0.
- 49:17Speaker 16: We put ourselves in a good spot. So, yeah, I mean,
- 49:20Speaker 16: It was fun to be out there with the guys
- 49:21Speaker 16: and back at home.
- 49:22Speaker 21: Was there a particular save that you remember where you
- 49:24Speaker 21: started to feel like, okay, the puck is definitely finding
- 49:27Speaker 21: me tonight?
- 49:29Speaker 5: Honestly, I don't know.
- 49:30Speaker 15: There was a couple flurries in the first period that
- 49:33Speaker 15: I felt were maybe a little bit frantic, just like
- 49:36Speaker 15: chaos in.
- 49:37Speaker 16: And around the net and sometimes those bounce in, sometimes
- 49:39Speaker 16: they don't, and when they don't, start to settle in
- 49:41Speaker 16: a little bit, so it was nice to have those
- 49:43Speaker 16: go my way.
- 49:44Speaker 21: Um, when you see the score, the team scoring at
- 49:46Speaker 21: will at the other end, too, I mean, does that
- 49:49Speaker 21: just give you more, more confidence, or how does that.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Change your mindset?
- 49:52Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, it's great to play with the lead, uh,
- 49:55Speaker 15: it's awesome to see the guys scoring goals, and I mean,
- 49:57Speaker 15: pretty goals, too, uh, breakaways, snipes, posting in, bar down, like,
- 50:01Speaker 15: some amazing goals, amazing plays, uh, the play that Ryder
- 50:04Speaker 15: and Katz made was sick, um, Mackie's got an elite release,
- 50:08Speaker 15: and we saw it right there with that shot.
- 50:11Speaker 16: He's got sick hands, too, and finished in tight on
- 50:12Speaker 16: the breakaway. So, yeah, it was fun to see the
- 50:16Speaker 16: guys playing so.
- 50:16Speaker 15: Well, and I thought we played really well, the full sheet,
- 50:20Speaker 15: the full arena.
- 50:22Speaker 16: Guys were blocking shots, making my life easy, boxing out. So, yeah,
- 50:26Speaker 16: it's fun to play when we're playing like that.
- 50:28Speaker 10: Joey Decord is 2-0 on the young season, and indeed
- 50:32Speaker 10: that shot released those hands, helping Mackie Samuskevich earn a
- 50:36Speaker 10: two-goal night in his home Kraken debut. The Kraken knockoff
- 50:40Speaker 10: of Calgary Flames, 6-1. That's your final score. We're back
- 50:43Speaker 10: in a bit here with more on talking Kraken on
- 50:45Speaker 10: 93.3 KJRFM.
- 50:48Speaker 2: If you've got a comment about tonight's Kraken game, make
- 50:52Speaker 2: sure we hear about it. Just text us at 49451.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Now back to talking Kraken with Mike Benton on Sports
- 51:00Speaker 2: Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 51:03Speaker 5: Mike Benton, Al Koniski with you.
- 51:05Speaker 10: Back by the Coors Light landing in section 26-1. Kraken
- 51:08Speaker 10: beat the Flames now 2-1 on the season and score
- 51:11Speaker 10: the most goals tonight. They've scored for a home opening
- 51:15Speaker 10: win in franchise history. Down to the room we go
- 51:17Speaker 10: once again for reaction from Krakenet coach Lane Lambert.
- 51:21Speaker 21: Lane, that's three straight games with very good goaltending. What
- 51:25Speaker 21: does that do for your team to just settle in
- 51:27Speaker 21: and feel confident out there?
- 51:29Speaker 22: Yeah, he played very well for us and certainly at
- 51:34Speaker 22: the start I thought we gave them a couple of opportunities.
- 51:38Speaker 22: What it did for us is it.
- 51:39Speaker 5: Allowed us to.
- 51:42Speaker 22: Find some rhythm, but he held it to a zero
- 51:50Speaker 22: and we were able to capitalize on our opportunities.
- 51:53Speaker 21: And your shot volume hasn't been huge, but considering how
- 51:56Speaker 21: hard it was at times to find goals last season,
- 51:59Speaker 21: the fact that pucks are going in right now, what
- 52:02Speaker 21: can that do for your team here looking ahead to
- 52:04Speaker 21: the season here?
- 52:05Speaker 22: Yeah, it gains, obviously guys, you know, gives them an
- 52:10Speaker 22: opportunity to gain some confidence that way. Certainly, you know,
- 52:15Speaker 22: we're making some pretty nice plays and guys are shooting
- 52:18Speaker 22: the puck in the net. So it's nice to see,
- 52:22Speaker 22: you know, so from a confidence standpoint, but you're not wrong.
- 52:25Speaker 22: You know, we still need more shot volume.
- 52:29Speaker 23: Lane, that first goal by Mackey kind of came out
- 52:33Speaker 23: of nowhere and Joey had just made a couple of
- 52:36Speaker 23: big saves to keep the game from being tied. How
- 52:38Speaker 23: much can him, like, outracing a guy the way he
- 52:41Speaker 23: did to get after a puck, how much can that
- 52:43Speaker 23: energize a team and maybe deflate an opponent when both
- 52:46Speaker 23: teams are coming off a back-to-back?
- 52:48Speaker 5: Yeah, no.
- 52:49Speaker 22: Certainly he used his speed. We know he has that.
- 52:52Speaker 22: You know, I thought Bobby used his speed as well.
- 52:56Speaker 22: He had some, you know, there was pretty good play
- 52:59Speaker 22: by Berkley coming up the ice, too, to kind of
- 53:01Speaker 22: find that and find that pace. So, you know, it's...
- 53:05Speaker 22: It's a focus of ours. It's been a focus of ours.
- 53:09Speaker 22: We want to continue to play fast. We want to
- 53:11Speaker 22: use our speed. So, you know, again, like I say,
- 53:14Speaker 22: Joey was really good prior to that and gave us
- 53:18Speaker 22: the opportunity to make those plays.
- 53:21Speaker 10: Joey Decor, the backbone and part of it here for
- 53:23Speaker 10: the Kraken 6-1 victory over Calgary as he got second
- 53:26Speaker 10: star honors tonight with 32 saves. on 33 shots. One
- 53:31Speaker 10: more check at the Tacoma Dodge text line. Again, 49451
- 53:34Speaker 10: the place to text us. The 410 saying Shane Wright
- 53:38Speaker 10: really impressed. He's playing like he has a massive chip
- 53:41Speaker 10: on his shoulder. 425 saying Berkley Catton was great. Mackie
- 53:44Speaker 10: Samaskewicz was great. Bobby McMahon, Shane Wright, this is the
- 53:49Speaker 10: key here to a strong season. That from the 4-2-5,
- 53:52Speaker 10: and one more for the 4-2-5, saying the new guys
- 53:54Speaker 10: were great, and finally some aggressive net front play and
- 53:58Speaker 10: some strong defense as well.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Well, talking to JT Brown between periods tonight, we were
- 54:02Speaker 5: talking a little bit about net front presence and net
- 54:04Speaker 5: front battles, and JT Brown thinks that Shane Wright is
- 54:08Speaker 5: one of those guys over the first three games that's
- 54:10Speaker 5: probably the leader of the clubhouse for successful net front battles,
- 54:14Speaker 5: and we talked to him in the postgame interview a
- 54:16Speaker 5: little bit, and he said, yeah, I'm looking to get
- 54:18Speaker 5: to the front of the net more. I'm looking for
- 54:20Speaker 5: more net front battles. That's where goals are scored, and
- 54:22Speaker 5: I love that about that.
- 54:23Speaker 10: I remember about a couple of years ago, Capo Caco
- 54:27Speaker 10: made a great play to Shane Wright. I believe it
- 54:30Speaker 10: was against New Jersey when they were here in this building.
- 54:33Speaker 10: They had nearly a similar play tonight where Shane Wright
- 54:37Speaker 10: outraced his man to the front of the net, but
- 54:39Speaker 10: the pass was just about a couple of inches off
- 54:42Speaker 10: the mark. I mean, the game was already well in
- 54:45Speaker 10: favor of the Kraken, but it would have certainly put
- 54:47Speaker 10: it on ice for good, but yet I got a
- 54:50Speaker 10: feeling that More of those plays are coming, and that's
- 54:53Speaker 10: going to be a big part of the building blocks
- 54:55Speaker 10: here for Shane Wright's game offensively.
- 54:57Speaker 5: Listen, you'd like to score every goal off a three-on-two,
- 54:59Speaker 5: a two-on-one rush. The game just doesn't work that way.
- 55:02Speaker 5: You have to get ugly goals as well, and the
- 55:05Speaker 5: way you do that, it's digging the puck out of
- 55:07Speaker 5: the trenches in the corner and the rebounds in front
- 55:09Speaker 5: of the net. It's going hard in front of the net.
- 55:11Speaker 5: And I think that the sooner you realize that, the
- 55:13Speaker 5: more success you start having in the goal column.
- 55:15Speaker 10: All right, so how do they do this again? Because
- 55:17Speaker 10: it's going to be a bit of a stiffer test.
- 55:19Speaker 10: How about you want to try the defending Western Conference champions?
- 55:23Speaker 10: on for size. That comes up Tuesday when the Kraken
- 55:26Speaker 10: will take on the Vegas Golden Knights. Big question for Vegas, Al,
- 55:30Speaker 10: is can they replace Pavel Dorofeev's offense? He has 72
- 55:34Speaker 10: goals last two seasons. 33 of those as well came
- 55:39Speaker 10: via the power play, but they had their hands full
- 55:41Speaker 10: with the Vancouver Canucks this evening, and Vegas just holding
- 55:46Speaker 10: on for a 3-2 win. They had three goals in
- 55:48Speaker 10: that second period, but The Kraken found a way to
- 55:52Speaker 10: maybe get through to Vegas and won both games last
- 55:55Speaker 10: year at Climate Pledge Arena here. So when you face Vegas,
- 56:00Speaker 10: you're going deep into the weeds because you know where
- 56:02Speaker 10: Mark Stone's going. William Carlson can make plays as well.
- 56:06Speaker 10: Mitch Marner was a playoff monster. So can you find
- 56:09Speaker 10: a way to, again, win those battles at the front
- 56:12Speaker 10: of the net and also win the puck possession game?
- 56:14Speaker 5: Well, I think it's going to have to be a
- 56:15Speaker 5: lot of the same thing. And yes, the goals don't
- 56:16Speaker 5: come as easy against a team like the Vegas Golden Knights.
- 56:19Speaker 5: But right now in the Western Conference, small sample size,
- 56:22Speaker 5: don't DM me. Kraken with a plus eight goal differential.
- 56:26Speaker 5: Best in the Western Conference right now. So clearly they're
- 56:28Speaker 5: putting the pucks in the net. That builds some confidence.
- 56:30Speaker 5: They're going to be shooting the puck a lot Tuesday
- 56:32Speaker 5: night and looking for the back of the net.
- 56:34Speaker 10: Hey, I'll DM you later with some love here. You
- 56:36Speaker 10: made some friends, Alston, brought some nice.
- 56:38Speaker 5: Food right behind us. The Benton family is going to
- 56:40Speaker 5: be happy tonight.
- 56:41Speaker 4: My goodness, what do I owe you?
- 56:42Speaker 5: And tip of the cap to Ballard Pizza for sharing
- 56:45Speaker 5: some of their leftovers here.
- 56:46Speaker 10: They do it well here. They do it well. So
- 56:48Speaker 10: everyone leaves happy. The Taste Buds will also leave this
- 56:51Speaker 10: building happy.
- 56:51Speaker 4: Thanks, Al, by the way.
- 56:53Speaker 1: You're welcome.
- 56:53Speaker 10: Great to have you here on the set once again.
- 56:55Speaker 10: Our next broadcast Tuesday, Kraken Vegas. Puck drops at 640.
- 56:59Speaker 10: Airtime is at 6. Big thanks again to Travis Moger,
- 57:02Speaker 10: our technical director. Terry Ryan, our on-site engineer. Also to
- 57:06Speaker 10: our friends... at Tom's Watch Bar for their help on
- 57:08Speaker 10: the pregame side.
- 57:10Speaker 5: That will do it for here.
- 57:11Speaker 10: For Al Kaniski, this is Mike Benton saying goodnight from
- 57:15Speaker 10: Climate Pledge Arena, and thank you for joining us. Your
- 57:17Speaker 10: final score, once again, Kraken 6, Flames 1. This is
- 57:21Speaker 10: Talking Kraken on 93.3 KJRFM.
