- 1:52call you made to mister Ellis Rasmussen. If you will stake your business,
- 1:56I shall be glad to transmit it to it. You tell mister rasmussin I'm
- 1:59an insurance investigator from Hartford and the matter involves a member of his own family.
- 2:02Oh young, mister Rasmus, Yes, could you hold on a moment
- 2:08so I could? Mister Raspus will send a car for you at six o'clock.
- 2:14Look, I can take a cab it. Oh well, Bob Bailey
- 2:28In the Exciting Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's
- 2:32fabulous freelance insurance investigator as truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator
- 2:52Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 2:57account of expenses incurred during my investigation of the rast Mustn't Matter expense account Item
- 3:05one two hundred and four dollars and thirty five cents airfare from Hartford to San
- 3:07Francisco to Los Angeles. Trying to compile the details of the Rasmussen case I'd
- 3:14been on it three days when I was stonewalled in Los Angeles with a Homby
- 3:16Hills address and the phone number of Elis Rasmussen. At six o'clock, a
- 3:22liveried chauffeur in immaculate uniform stepped up to me at the desk. Mister Dollar,
- 3:27Yes, my name is Stalper, Sir, I have mister Rasmussen's car
- 3:30outside. Well, gee whiz stufford hated the truth thing. A few minutes
- 3:43later, when we turned into the lush green Holmby Hills section, I had
- 3:46a suspicion I was about to deal with a bona fide millionaire. When we
- 3:49parked in front of the big two story colonial home and a man with graying
- 3:52hair and swallowtail coats stepped out of the door. Well, I knew I
- 3:55was going to meet the real article. I'm Holidy, show hell hardy,
- 4:00and mister Resmussen is waiting for you. This way please. We stopped in
- 4:06front of a huge panel door, party tapped on it once, then pulled
- 4:11on the knob. As we entered, a tall man with a shock of
- 4:15pure white hair rose from his chair and turned towards us. This is mister
- 4:18Dahler, mister Rasmusson I want about four fingers of sorrow, Maash, what
- 4:23do you want? He took the words right out of my mouth, mister
- 4:26Restmuss. Very good, sir. He's a pretty nice fellow. We're all
- 4:31pretty nice fellows around here. Mister Dollar. Sit down, thanks? Could
- 4:36you hand me that light? Here? Oh? Sure? Here? Thank
- 4:41you? What are you doing in Los Angeles? Why? Federal Underwriters of
- 4:49Hartford wrote a blanket policy for all Imperial Rubber Company employees. Your son was
- 4:55an executive with Imperio when he was killed in Melea last spring. Federal owes
- 4:59his widow twenty five thousand dollars. I don't know where she is, mister
- 5:02dollar. I see, I doubt if you do. Let me put it
- 5:09this way. I never met the young lady i'd married a one night in
- 5:13Elton, Nevada. Two days later they were on the way to Malaya.
- 5:17Six months there and the development station was raided by guerrillas one night, and
- 5:24I suddenly no longer have a son. Have you eaten your dinner, mister
- 5:31Dollar? Oh? I wouldn't want to trouble the hearty set a place,
- 5:33mister Dollar. Very good sir. Well, well, I thought you might
- 5:42phone me when she got back to the States. She never did, never
- 5:46a letter, nothing. I'm old and sick, but I still want to
- 5:50see the girl my son married. It's not an easy thing to lose a
- 5:55son, mister Dollar, and I lost a good one, us, the
- 6:00best son of man ever had. I'm sure you did soon to your son,
- 6:06good Fred. During dinner and afterward, over coffee and the cares,
- 6:13I listened to the story of Elis Rasmussen's life. It came from the lips
- 6:16of an old man who was dying, but in whose eyes I could see
- 6:19reflected the memories of a brawling, bustling life that started in an Oklahoma oil
- 6:24field and moved to Alaska and Arabia and Africa. More and more, during
- 6:29the talk I began to know his lost son, for in everything the old
- 6:31man had to say about himself, I could sense an unmistakable reflection of his
- 6:35son. Finally I thanked him and left. If I may say so,
- 6:44I do hope you'll call soon again, sir mister Rasmussin and George, your
- 6:47visit very much. I haven't seen him so much like his own settled since
- 6:51we received the terrible news of young mister Rasmussel's death. He must have been
- 6:56quite a man. Hearty, young Fred Rasmussen. He was all of us
- 7:00missing, dreadfully. No one has ever met Missus Rasmusson, and we were
- 7:03most anxious to receive her, especially after young mister Fred's death. I imagine,
- 7:09so the car is already, mister Dollar. Good night, good night,
- 7:13honey, fine night, mister Dollar. Yeah, stuffer, Yes,
- 7:26I didn't want to press the point with mister Rasmussen, but now maybe you
- 7:29can straighten me out. Did he approve of his son's marriage? Let's put
- 7:33it this way, mister Dollar. Mister Rasmusten approved of mister Fred, and
- 7:39if mister Fred got himself married, then mister Rasmusten approved of the girl.
- 7:45Between them two they had that kind of understanding. Real people. Expense account
- 7:53Item two one dollar ninety eight cents telegram the Personnel Division Imperial Rubber Company,
- 7:57requesting a copy of all information they might have on Laura and rass Muscle.
- 8:01I had him three six dollars one long distance phone call to the universal agent
- 8:03working in the case in San Francisco. Missus ras Mussein left the Malaya Pinancula
- 8:07by boat from a town called Cooschetti three days after the news of her husband's
- 8:11death. A week later, she booked plane passage in Hong Kong with Trans
- 8:15Pacific Airlines. She changed planes in Honolula. She plared the port authority in
- 8:20San Francisco. From there on we lost her. Get a list of all
- 8:22the passengers who were on that plane. Get someone checking the hotels in the
- 8:26Bay area. She might have checked into one one she hit friscoll Okay,
- 8:28Allison, We're looking for a woman whose husband was brutally murdered about two weeks
- 8:33before she got back to the States. If she's anything like I think she
- 8:35was, probably about at the end of her rope. Now start asking questions
- 8:39at places where people like that go. Right on Wednesday morning, I rented
- 8:45a car that sid him four twenty five dollars and made the rounds, first
- 8:48stop, Los Angeles Board of Education. By four o'clock in the afternoon,
- 8:52I had found thirty five Laura Olsons who had attended public school in Los Angeles
- 8:56and were more or less in the proper rage bracket. The next day arrived
- 9:00from Imperial Rubber Company. Among other things, it contained a passport, picture
- 9:03and a complete description of Laura Olsen rass muscle. She was a blonde girl
- 9:07with a pouting seltry kind of mouth and wide dark eyes. You you down
- 9:20there? Yes? What do you want? I'm looking for Missus Francis Olsen.
- 9:24Are you Missus Olsen? I don't want to buy nothing. Do you
- 9:30have a daughter named Laura Olson? Are you a policeman? No, I'm
- 9:33an insurance investigator. I'm trying to locate Laura Olsen rass muscle. How'd you
- 9:39get this address? It's that a picture of her? I see? I
- 9:46ask my Laura, what about her? I've been trying to locate her for
- 9:48some time. Is she here? No? No, she ain't here she
- 9:52I mean here for five years. Do you have any idea where I can
- 9:54find her? Friends? Maybe other relatives. Her name's Rasmussen. Now,
- 10:01yes, she married a man named fred Resmus marry well? Ain't that just
- 10:05something you didn't know your daughter had been married? Missus Olsen? How would
- 10:09I know? How would I know anything about her? Saturday at noon,
- 10:18a registered letter arrived from the agent at San Francisco containing the list of passengers
- 10:22who'd been on the plane with her. Three of the names were in the
- 10:24Los Angeles area, including a mister Oberlin who lived in Pasadena. For sure.
- 10:28Remember real pretty we sat together all away from Honolulu. What's up?
- 10:35We're trying to locate it, mister Oberman. Did she have it to mention
- 10:37her plans once she returned to the state's lands? You know what hotel she
- 10:41might be staying at in San Francisco or she was going on to another city.
- 10:46No, no, no, not her. You say that very emphatically.
- 10:52Yeah, I guess they do. You didn't have to show me a
- 10:54picture. You know, a guy always praised who meet someone like her on
- 10:58a plane? You know what I mean? I mean, live it up
- 11:01yesterday's guys, She said tomorrow Wayne here, and the only thing we got
- 11:05is today. Yeah, we had a swell time. You're sure about this?
- 11:11We were pretty jummy ball if you want the truth of it, mister
- 11:15Roblin, did she mention anything about being in Malaya before she bought it that
- 11:18plane? And she didn't tell you that her husband had been killed a week
- 11:24before, phil Ah, he was murdered by gorillas and Malaya. No,
- 11:33she didn't mention that. She didn't mention it at all, mister Dollar,
- 11:48Johnny Dollar, Oh yeah, how's mister Rasmus, he's not so well,
- 11:52so that's why I called. Could you possibly find time to visit him tonight?
- 11:58May I send a car right away? Is it serious? Dying?
- 12:07I knew why he wanted to see me. Have you located my daughter in
- 12:11law yet? No? I haven't located in mister Rasmusson. When I know
- 12:16something about her? I know she drank whiskey and flirted with a fat salesman
- 12:20on an airplane all the way from Honolula to San Francisco. I know her
- 12:22mother is a drunk. I know she didn't think enough of you or your
- 12:26son to contact you or anybody else when she got back. Mister Rasmusson,
- 12:31it looks to me like your daughter in law's a first class bomb BacT two
- 12:50of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar, in just a moment. Our daily
- 12:56lives are sharply affected by world news, and for a complete run of the
- 13:00news every single week evening, just keep your dial on CBS Radio for the
- 13:03news broadcasts of our famous CBS newsman Edward Armuau and Lowell Thomas. Here up
- 13:09to the minute news with Edward Armorau and Lowell Thomas on CBS Radio Now Act
- 13:16two of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and the Rasmussen Matter. There was a
- 13:31black coupe with MD on the license, parked in the driveway of the Rasmusen
- 13:33house. When we pulled up. In the bedroom, a silvery haired man
- 13:37and a black suit was sitting beside the bed that held Elis Rasmus. He
- 13:41was introduced as doctor Butler. Then I shook the hand of mister Rasmus.
- 13:45Someone suggested that doctor Butler might like to use the library for his calls,
- 13:50and I was alone with the old man. If you want some whiskey,
- 13:54keep it in the sideboard over there, not now. Thanks. I wish
- 14:00I had some news for you, mister Rasmussen. We're finding out things,
- 14:03but we haven't found her yet. What things? Oh? Things? Nothing
- 14:09important? Dollar. If I judge you right, you know your business.
- 14:15And if you haven't found my daughter in law by now, you've certainly found
- 14:18out what kind of person she is, So tell me I haven't met her.
- 14:20I don't know. You're being a vacial. I don't work for you,
- 14:22mister Rasmussin I'm an insurance investigator. Try to locate a woman and pay
- 14:26off acclaim. If I don't find it. The case will just have to
- 14:30sit unless you or someone else concerned makes a report to missing persons. Then
- 14:33the cops can take over, and maybe they should right now. My son
- 14:39is a fine man. I can look back in all the years I had
- 14:43with him and be proud of every year and every day. He married a
- 14:48girl named Laura Olson. I don't know where she came from or who she
- 14:52was, but I know my son wouldn't have married her unless he loved her,
- 14:56unless she loved him in return and was worthy of his love. You
- 14:58know what a lot to reskmus. Perhaps I should go to the police.
- 15:03No, no, don't do that. We'll find her, mister Rasmusson.
- 15:09We're getting it narrowed down. Well, I better leave now, as you're
- 15:15saying, mister Dollar, Yes, sir, I want to see her.
- 15:22Yes, sir, I'm sorry I talked to you the way I did.
- 15:33Phone call for you, mister Dollar. Would you like to take it in
- 15:35there? Oh yeah, sure, keep an eye on her heart, trust
- 15:39me, sir, Johnny Dollar. This is opposite Daily Los Angeles. Please.
- 15:50Oh yeah, you the insurance guy looking for a Laurels and rast Mussin.
- 15:54Yeah, have you got anything? We got it. Huh, she's
- 15:56here with the rest of the girls in the drunk tik. A drunk tank
- 16:18will always smell of disinfecting me. This one was no different. There are
- 16:22no bunks, no chairs, no blankets, no nothing. So you stand
- 16:25to sit on a concrete floor and wait for something to happen. The legal
- 16:27period is twenty four hours. You get rebooked and you get released. It
- 16:32all depends. What's the story on her dollar. I've got a check for
- 16:40twenty five thousand dollars for it. Shee assurance money? Yeah, quiet all
- 16:48right, Quiet down, You girls better learn to get along. Which one
- 16:55back there sitting on the floor. Oh, what's the situation if somebody comes
- 17:00up with bail again? Have her expense account? Adam seven one hundred dollars
- 17:07bail. While I was winning around, Officer Daily broke open a file on
- 17:11her a dozen aliases, a dozen charges and one conviction for shopa a career
- 17:18of petty thievery that began at the age of sixteen and ran up into a
- 17:21twenty second year expense account item A thirty five dollars telegrams. I sent wires
- 17:26to all parties concerned, All parties except Ellis rast Mussel, ordering a stop
- 17:30on their activities since Laura Olsen Rasmussen had been found over there. Who are
- 17:44you? My name's Johnny Dollar. Thanks for getting me out. Why.
- 17:52I did it for a friend and I didn't know I had the expense account
- 18:06out of nine twenty cents two cups of coffee. We had it in a
- 18:08diner across in the women's section of the main chair. I looked at Laura
- 18:14Olsen rass Must while she drank the coffee. Looked at the blonde hair and
- 18:18the wide eyes and the potting mouth. Looked at the woman who had once
- 18:22been the wife of Fred Rasmus. What's the catch, mister? No catch?
- 18:30You put up one hundred dollars for me. I don't know you from
- 18:33a load of coal. No you don't. Where do you live. I've
- 18:40been staying at the Petemunt Hotel. You know where it is? No,
- 18:44well, not many people do, especially people with clean shirts. What have
- 18:48you been doing since you got back from Melea. I've been getting along.
- 18:56You got something to do with Fred. You know about Malaya. I know
- 19:00about a lot of things. I've been looking for you for a month,
- 19:04so what why didn't you contact your father in law when you got back.
- 19:08Why should I? What would he care about me? He never met me?
- 19:15What I mean to him right now? Since he no longer has a
- 19:18son, you mean everything to him. You're kidding me, mister. I
- 19:23wish I was kidding you. I wish to heaven I was kidding you.
- 19:30Right now. I want you to come over to my hotel. Oh now,
- 19:37just sign some papers. I have a check for twenty five thousand dollars
- 19:41for you. Who was that? Your husband was insured? You're his beneficiary.
- 19:45All you have to do is fill out an application. I'll give you
- 19:48the check. I don't believe it, it's true. Come on expense account.
- 19:57At am ten two dollars his cabfare to my hotel. I took her
- 20:02upstairs with me, stood over her while she filled out the necessary papers.
- 20:06Outside of that, we didn't say a word. Johnny Dollar, This is
- 20:11stuffer, mister Dollar. I hardy asked me to phone you to see if
- 20:15there's any word. Oh, yes, well, What'll I tell him,
- 20:19mister Dollar? Tell him? No luck yet, stuffer? How is how
- 20:26is the old man about the same, sir? Counting on you? I
- 20:30think i'll talk to you lady, Yes, sir, here are okay?
- 20:38Thanks? There's your check? Anything else? Nope, that's it, okay,
- 20:49see you run sometime. Sure. Brad told me about a man named
- 20:56stufferd who worked for his old man for years. Was that him on the
- 21:02phone just now? Yeah? Yeah, I didn't know what I was going
- 21:12to say to the old man, but I didn't know. I was hoping
- 21:15that if ras wasn't had to die, that he'd died before anybody told him
- 21:18the kind of daughter in law I'd turned up. I didn't want to be
- 21:22in on that expense. A con out of eleven eighty three dollars hotel bill.
- 21:26I checked out at five thirty, picked up my airline tickets at the
- 21:29desk that sid him twelve, then sat around the lobby for five minutes.
- 21:33I had him thirteen. Two drinks for myself, mister dollars. Yeah.
- 21:41Oh, I read in the paper that Alice Rasmus is dying. It's that
- 21:47true, that's true. Nine by Sadan shout you, So what are you
- 21:53drinking? Nothing? I know why you didn't tell him. You found me,
- 22:00and I don't blame you. Fred's dad is anything like Fred Weston.
- 22:03I know how you felt finding me the way you did. Let's forget it,
- 22:07missus Rasmus, and shall we I'd like to meet Fred's father, so
- 22:14you want to meet him? Hum The human thing would have been to see
- 22:18him when you came back. But not a line, not a word.
- 22:22That old man and that house knows his son was really a man, And
- 22:26on that basis he believes, without seeing you, that his son married a
- 22:29real woman. He had love and sympathy and help and devotion and all the
- 22:33things you don't seem to have any useful waiting for you in that house.
- 22:36He oh, never mind. I loved Fred, loved him the first minute
- 22:45I saw him. You know what I was doing when I saw him,
- 22:52observing cocktails in a place like this. He didn't ask me what kind of
- 22:56a family I came from, whether I was good at bad. Just put
- 23:02one of those big arms around me one night and said, your mind.
- 23:07He said that to me. He said it because he loved me. No
- 23:14one ever loved me, no one, but he did. I told him
- 23:23who I was and where I came from, and all he said was you're
- 23:27with me, now, will We went to Malaia together, And I never
- 23:42knew in all my life, what I knew then, how it was to
- 23:52be wanted by someone who was this kind. Then he he told me.
- 24:03One afternoon when I was in chest I took a boat, and then I
- 24:11took a plane back here, go on, I want to see Fred's father.
- 24:22I took a car to the house, and I saw kind of a
- 24:26house and what kind of people his family were. I didn't go in.
- 24:33Couldn't you see me, cheap, rotten, dirty little me? Couldn't you
- 24:37see me walking in there and saying I'm me? Couldn't you see that mother
- 24:41of mine moving in? What would that have done to the old man?
- 24:45I would have crushed out of his whole memory of Fred. But I don't
- 24:55think, mister dollar, I haven't got my memory too. I didn't drink
- 25:00that away. I was. I was loved by man, and I loved
- 25:08him back. I've still got that. I'm going out there pretty soon.
- 25:22Would you like to meet him? Do you think I can? I think
- 25:27so. I think so very much, Oh, mister Dollar, I've been
- 25:32waiting in the lobby. I thought you might be here. I do miss
- 25:36stuff her. I'd like you to meet missus Rasmus. Well, my my,
- 25:44I'm mighty pleased. To meet you. The boss will be mighty happy.
- 25:51She dried her eyes in the car. I didn't say much. She
- 25:53didn't say much, but in a half hour I took to get out to
- 25:57Holmby Hills, something happened to her again, that's something that must have happened
- 26:02when the big arm went around her shoulders the first time. Good evening,
- 26:08Missus rasmustin Hardy, how do you do, Missus Rasmussen. We're very happy
- 26:14to see you. Thank you, Hardy. Red spoke of you often.
- 26:18That was kind of Fred. This way, please come in, come in.
- 26:29I think you can introduce Missus Rasmust and mister Dolla Ring if you leave
- 26:33me, sir, I'm scared, Laura. If there ever was a man
- 26:37for you not to be scared of, it's that man in there. How
- 26:40can I tell him about myself? I've been in jail like it. Watch
- 26:45well, mister Dollar, come in. I've brought someone for you to meet,
- 26:48mister Rasmussen. I'm here. You would be my son's Laura. Yes

- 30:12another exciting story of yours truly, Johnny Dollary, Dan Cumberly speaking, Welcome
- 31:19back. This was really a very unusual and interesting episode of Johnny Dollar.
- 31:29I thought actually from the first that Johnny was probably jumping to some conclusions with
- 31:37the judgments. The flirting on the plane and the getting drunk. Neither one
- 31:42of them, you know, look all that good. But it's one of
- 31:47those things I think that, particularly when you're dealing with loss and loneliness,
- 31:53becomes understandable. It was true that she was drunk, but she was not
- 32:00a drunk. It was not a habitual thing. But overall, this is
- 32:05an episode that just takes you by surprise, just because I think in Johnny
- 32:09Dollar, you're so used to evil, despicable, not nice old rich men,
- 32:21and I think that we get something very different here for everybody is uh,
- 32:30we kind of misjudge everyone in this story. It was definitely powerful.
- 32:35Like I said, it's a bit of an oddball for Johnny Dollar. In
- 32:38early parts of the episode, it kind of reminded me of the five part
- 32:43serial The Broaderick Matter, And while it does have some similarities, it's also
- 32:49uh, just incredibly different. It's definitely its own story. It's just an
- 32:54incredibly moving story about love and uh and the unexpected ways it comes. Now,
- 33:01this whole story is just a continuation of the relationship between father and son.
- 33:10This wasn't a Christmas episode it aired on December sixteenth, but it was
- 33:15kind of I think, a more heartwarming mood for the holiday season. We
- 33:20will skip over the Christmas episode for now. We will come back to that
- 33:25when we get to Christmas this year, so we'll hear that in a few
- 33:30months. But overall, a very memorable and very different sort of Johnny Dollar
- 33:35story, and I hope you enjoyed it. All right. Well, on
- 33:37to some listener comments and feedback, and on our listener comments and feedback,
- 33:43now where we turn Bobby comments listening to this one now regarding the Royal Street
- 33:51matter. Glad that Johnny is down south in my area. And that's one
- 33:59thing it's nice about Johnny Dollar locations all across the United States. I believe
- 34:04he got into close to forty states from the documentation I've seen. Never quite
- 34:10made it to Idaho, but he definitely got around, even though there were
- 34:15a lot of cases that were just in and about Hartford. All right,
- 34:20Well, that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with police
- 34:28headquarters and then join us back here next Friday for another episode of Yours truly
- 34:32Johnny Dollar. In the meanwhile, I send your comments to Box thirteen at
