- 0:05This edition of It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, your partner
- 0:11for global wealth creation.
- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:18multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:20With me now the founder of Brenthurst Wealth and that's Magnus Haystack.
- 0:21Magnus, you kindly sent me a piece which was quite thought-provoking actually
- 0:26because it goes
- 0:28back to 2025 which we've already spoken about.
- 0:29What a great year it was for the JSC.
- 0:31But then we look at the month of war, the month that has just passed.
- 0:36And it's the complete antithesis of last year.
- 0:39And it really puts things into context, I think.
- 0:42Indeed it does, Lindsay.
- 0:43The drivers of the market last year upwards was exactly the same drivers that
- 0:49pulled it down the last month.
- 0:51Just to put into context, from early March, April last year, 2025, be.
- 0:58Gold price, gold shares started rocketing and launched as it was going to the moon.
- 1:04I mean, the gold index went up like 200%.
- 1:08The gold price went up 50%, 60%.
- 1:12So our market was dragged up by the performance of our big three gold mines.
- 1:16In fact, only three gold mines.
- 1:18And together with that, process NOSPAS also had...
- 1:23a very, very strong rally, especially Nuspash, which is our biggest single
- 1:28company.
- 1:30So the end result was that the JSC on an index level looked extremely positive,
- 1:35both in Rand terms up 40% and in dollar terms up 61%.
- 1:40So Mr.
- 1:41Haystack at Brentis was eating humble pie.
- 1:45Yes, people took to social media to have a go at you, Magnus, but you're used to
- 1:49that, aren't you?
- 1:50Well, there were guys having a go at me saying I got it wrong.
- 1:53Am I bringing my money back?
- 1:55And I actually spoke at the business conference about a month ago on this
- 1:59issue.
- 1:59And I actually said, I referred to this one particular tweet where some guy had a
- 2:04go at me.
- 2:05And I said, I'm not bringing back one cent.
- 2:07And I explained why not.
- 2:09I said, the upward movement was so concentrated into five shares.
- 2:14And if anything goes wrong with those five shares, we're going to see a massive
- 2:19pullback.
- 2:21And that's exactly what happened.
- 2:23you know, March.
- 2:25Because the gold price collapsed, gold shares collapsed,
- 2:25Nospash has been having a torrid run for some reason.
- 2:30Boom, our market is suddenly the second-largest, worst-performing market in
- 2:35the world.
- 2:37And the headline in the
- 2:39Business Day this morning says 3 trillion rand lost in a month.
- 2:43Okay, that's what newspapers do.
- 2:46They focus on the bad news.
- 2:48So I was always a little bit worried about the...
- 2:51the drivers behind that uplift.
- 2:53The broad-based market wasn't doing much.
- 2:56So what you're saying is a very narrow, before you go into that, it was a very
- 3:00narrow rally.
- 3:02Five stocks really drove most of that, whatever the rise was, you said 61, was it
- 3:0661% or 41%?
- 3:08Sorry, the numbers.
- 3:10Oh, there you go.
- 3:12In round terms, the JSC was up 41%.
- 3:14Most of that, or a good percentage of that anyway, was five stocks.
- 3:15And that's very dangerous, It's almost like the potential...
- 3:19vulnerability of the US market because of the focus on the Magnificent Seven.
- 3:24Similar sort of situation.
- 3:25Much more amplified in the sense that there were five shares and they made up
- 3:32about 25% to 30%
- 3:34of the JSE at their peak, which was very, very narrow and very focused.
- 3:39And as it so happened, exactly those five shares started tumbling a month or two
- 3:44ago.
- 3:45And that dragged the market down just as quickly.
- 3:47So you would have suffered from severe bad whiplash if you looked at the one-year
- 3:54number
- 3:56of the JSE end of April, sorry, January, and said, wow, time to get in.
- 4:01Well, you're down 15% in rand terms and 20% in dollar terms.
- 4:07So that was an extreme bout of volatility.
- 4:10And it looks like it's going to continue.
- 4:12because today gold shares were absolutely slaughtered again, NASPAS down again.
- 4:18So those guys who follow the index will perhaps understand why they need some
- 4:24active management.
- 4:26It does reduce the volatility.
- 4:27So there's a heck of a long, big push.
- 4:30And I've always said I like index investing across the world, but the South
- 4:36African market is different.
- 4:38And we see it again, the volatility.
- 4:40And that's when you...
- 4:43operate in the real world.
- 4:45It's money that goes up and money goes down and what are you going to do as an
- 4:51investor?
- 4:53That's why I kind of like the value style active management in the South African
- 4:56context.
- 4:58The returns have been far more stable.
- 5:01and been excellent.
- 5:01But wow, it's been a sharp drop for the last month.
- 5:05It really has, you know, and it's quite ironic that we're pre-recording this
- 5:11podcast on the year
- 5:13anniversary of Mr. Trump standing up there with a wooden board on his, well,
- 5:17he called it Liberation Day.
- 5:18It was the day that tariffs were mooted by him.
- 5:22And the market over the next two to three days came down very, very sharply.
- 5:26And then we started the rally.
- 5:28that you spoke about on the JSE, which led to an extraordinary performance for the
- 5:33whole year.
- 5:34I spoke to a money manager yesterday, and he didn't want to speak at first because
- 5:41of what's happening to the RAND
- 5:43and to the capital market in South Africa.
- 5:44And I said, you've got a duty to do so, because I gave you the chance when in
- 5:49November, December,
- 5:51when everything was set fair.
- 5:52For the fixed income market, you know, everything was, the rand was so strong, it
- 5:59was going to 13, 13.50 in many people's eyes,
- 6:01and so on and so on.
- 6:03And yesterday, he wasn't eating humble pie,
- 6:05but he recognised that when you look back at the history of South Africa, the rand
- 6:10and the interest rates,
- 6:12etc., when everything looks good, be very careful.
- 6:13And it's exactly what's happened, I think, Magnus.
- 6:15It has, you know, and the point you make is absolutely correct, you know.
- 6:21That person does owe it to speak the truth or at least give a balanced view to the
- 6:26market,
- 6:26not only a one-sided view all the time, which happens quite a lot.
- 6:30And in the context, you know, it's notable that most South Africans today have, well,
- 6:37people who have got disposable income, high net worth individuals,
- 6:42have a very large percentage of their cash offshore and in South Africa.
- 6:46So the currency becomes a very big factor in the lives of...
- 6:50people.
- 6:52So, you know, what you win on the one side, you lose on the other side.
- 6:55But my golly, it's been volatile.
- 6:58It's been volatile.
- 6:59What do we do now?
- 7:00Because this month of war is going to be two, three months of war in whatever form.
- 7:07We don't know yet.
- 7:07It's all up to Mr.
- 7:08Trump and also to the foe, the Iranians.
- 7:12But I do think it's here for a while.
- 7:15And I do think Iran is still vulnerable.
- 7:17That's my opinion, not Brenta's opinion.
- 7:19What do you think?
- 7:20You know, I spoke to a client this morning and, you know,
- 7:24one can give general advice and it's normally good advice, don't panic, etc.
- 7:28But it's a different situation when you're looking into someone's eyes and you're
- 7:35saying, you know,
- 7:37your pension fund is down 15 or 20 percent.
- 7:39What do you do?
- 7:41You know, then all that good advice of staying in there for the long term just
- 7:46disappears
- 7:48and you actually have to make a call and say, sir.
- 7:49For you, I'm taking out of the market, I'm putting into lovely old cash until there
- 7:56is some kind of stability into the
- 7:58market.
- 8:00So, you know, that's not what the fund managers want to hear.
- 8:02But, you know, when it comes down to real life individual cases, that sometimes is
- 8:06just the best option.
- 8:08Just put it into cash, especially with pension money, living annuities where
- 8:13there's no capital gains tax,
- 8:15there's no fees, etc.
- 8:17You should put in cash and wait, protect the downside.
- 8:19and we'll come back to fight the war another time.
- 8:21And that's what I'm doing with my big clients, especially with the
- 8:27non-discretionary capital.
- 8:29Put it in cash.
- 8:31What can you lose?
- 8:33You know, if you're wrong, you go back into the market.
- 8:34But if the market continues dropping, you've assisted that client.
- 8:38Because clients are always bullish when the markets go up.
- 8:43But the minute it turns, they become very negative and nervous.
- 8:46They question the investment strategy and then you have to do what you have to do.
- 8:50Magnus, we have to talk a little bit about
- 8:53Bitcoin because Bitcoin was above 125,000 not that long ago.
- 8:59It was October, I think, mid-October.
- 9:01It has been down to close to 60,000.
- 9:04I'm publicly quite anti the cryptocurrency scene until it's properly regulated
- 9:11and until people properly understand it.
- 9:14Are you of the same view?
- 9:15I am indeed, Lindsay, and I'll tell you why.
- 9:17It's quite funny.
- 9:20I joined some Bitcoin business grouping where people comment on Bitcoin all the
- 9:27time.
- 9:27And my golly, I expressed that kind of opinion that you just expressed.
- 9:32And was I slaughtered for being out of touch and stupid and old or whatever?
- 9:40And I said to the guys, you sound like...
- 9:43All I did was I tweeted, I said, guys, do you realize the Bitcoin price?
- 9:48I think it was at $65,000 was the same price as it was five years ago.
- 9:55I just made that point that was kind of lost in this discussion of, I said, you've
- 10:02made no money in five years in Bitcoin.
- 10:04Do I see that?
- 10:06Do I hear that?
- 10:08And then the guy said, no, no, no, don't talk about that.
- 10:10I agree with you, Lindsay.
- 10:12These guys are like evangelists.
- 10:14If you don't believe the goddess of Bitcoin,
- 10:19you are cast into the hellfire of eternity.
- 10:23It's just incredible how they can slaughter you and turn and twist the
- 10:29arguments.
- 10:31And then I said, guys, Bitcoin is down 50% in one year.
- 10:34You've made no money in five years.
- 10:36And you want to tell me.
- 10:38This is going to replace fiat money, the so-called fiat money,
- 10:43and going to replace the dollars.
- 10:45I said, you are smoking your socks.
- 10:51It's not like the tulip mania of centuries ago.
- 10:54It's not like South Sea bubble.
- 10:56It's not like that.
- 10:57It's not quite as bad as that.
- 10:59But I do believe the downside is more likely than the upside.
- 11:05The line of least resistance is to the downside is what I'm trying to say.
- 11:09On that particular WhatsApp grouping, it's called the BizNews Bitcoin grouping.
- 11:17They are worse than the Tulip Mania of 1650 or whatever.
- 11:22They are guys, they're proudly proclaiming now for years, I have sold everything and
- 11:29everything in Bitcoin.
- 11:31That is the new...
- 11:33And I just, I just, I just, as if I...
- 11:35It's this echo chamber.
- 11:36They're trying to convince everyone else and themselves that this can only go up
- 11:43and it's going to replace the
- 11:45dollar.
- 11:47And I just said, guys, I've heard this story so often that it's the end of the
- 11:48dollar.
- 11:49And what has happened now?
- 11:49Everybody's rushed back to the dollar.
- 11:52So these guys, it may or may not have a place in the financial future of the
- 11:58world.
- 11:59Am I qualified to confidently… put my client's money in there?
- 12:06No, I can't.
- 12:07And I'll tell you why.
- 12:09If I put a client into Bitcoin and it drops by 50%
- 12:16and the client goes and lodges a complaint at the
- 12:19FSEA or some judge who has to judge my quality of advice,
- 12:25he only has to ask me one question.
- 12:27And the question is, Mr.
- 12:30Magnus, Do you fully understand?
- 12:32Bitcoin.
- 12:33Precisely.
- 12:34And the answer to it is, I don't.
- 12:38And all he will say is, pay the man, pay the man.
- 12:42So that's my standard reply.
- 12:44I say, cannot recommend it because I do not honestly understand it 100%.
- 12:52The icing on the cake for me, and this is me being bigoted.
- 12:55And again, this is not your Brenta's views when I saw the two sweaty faces of the
- 12:59Trump boys.
- 13:01at a Bitcoin conference or a crypto conference in Dubai, I think it was.
- 13:04It doesn't matter.
- 13:05I saw them there also being evangelical when it came to cryptocurrencies.
- 13:09And I thought, yeah, well, I knew I didn't like it anyway.
- 13:11Now I really don't like it.
- 13:13Moving on from that, please, Magnus, just the final point I want to, or the final
- 13:19question to you is,
- 13:21are you fearful of the South African economy?
- 13:21Because we're going into this crisis, or South Africa is going into this crisis on
- 13:28a slightly firmer footing than it would have been going.
- 13:30into the same thing four or five years ago.
- 13:31The RAND was relatively strong.
- 13:33Interest rates were going down.
- 13:36The public finances were slightly better.
- 13:39We'd been upgraded.
- 13:40We're off the grey list.
- 13:41So we're slightly cushioned.
- 13:43But how long before that cushion gets pulled from beneath South Africa and the
- 13:49economy goes into crisis mode again?
- 13:51Yeah, you know, the increase in the oil price, which historically always hits us
- 13:57very badly, and the longer there's...
- 13:59Trump carries on with this crazy war.
- 14:00You know, the worst it's going to get.
- 14:01We're extremely vulnerable to higher oil price, higher diesel,
- 14:04and it will just filter through into the economy that's already weak.
- 14:08Consumer expenditure will become under much more pressure.
- 14:14Government finances, they've graciously cut the fuel levy by three rand,
- 14:20but they need to get that money from somewhere else, and they will get it.
- 14:24They need to get it because our debt levels.
- 14:26or at 78% of GDP.
- 14:29And in the budget earlier this year, they confidently said, well, now we're going to
- 14:35get the debt levels under control.
- 14:37Well, that's been blown out of the water.
- 14:38So that's where our problem lies, is the debt levels.
- 14:43It's just going to continue to increase and increase.
- 14:45And at some point, I don't know where that point is, the debt levels become a major
- 14:51factor.
- 14:53And then that's where you'll get the collapse in the currency.
- 14:55I don't know if it's close.
- 14:56I don't think it's close, but it's slowly but surely moving in the wrong direction.
- 15:01So this has hit our economy at a very, very bad time.
- 15:04And I just don't see the ANC government under the current thinking of Ramaphosa.
- 15:10making any difference to the trajectory of our economy at its present.
- 15:16Just to summarise, you say in the piece that you sent me, final sentence is this.
- 15:22Over 10 years, offshore markets have returned double the JSE and we still
- 15:28recommend offshore
- 15:30investing as our primary investing strategy.
- 15:32Magnus, thank you very much for your time.
- 15:34Magnus Heysdek is from Brent Aswell, founder of that organisation.
- 15:37And that was It's My Money.
- 15:39It's My Money was brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, an award-winning
- 15:44boutique wealth management company.
