- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me on the line is the CLP's member for Namajira,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Bill Yan. Good morning to you.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Bill, Good morning Katie.
- 0:07Speaker 3: How are you going?
- 0:08Speaker 1: Not too bad now?
- 0:09Speaker 3: Bill?
- 0:09Speaker 1: Obviously you and I do to have a discussion about
- 0:12Speaker 1: an incident that it occurred in Alice Springs, and we
- 0:16Speaker 1: will talk about that in just a moment. But mate,
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm assuming that you have heard the news from overnight
- 0:21Speaker 1: that a nineteen year old has lost his life after
- 0:25Speaker 1: as after being stabbed at a bottle shop over overnight
- 0:30Speaker 1: just before nine pm. What is your reaction?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Okay, Look, this is absolutely tragic, and like you, I
- 0:37Speaker 2: can't begin to explain how I sort of feel about
- 0:42Speaker 2: it like that, you know, and you get going to
- 0:44Speaker 2: work in a bottle like it's not as if there's
- 0:48Speaker 2: certain jobs that carry a little bit of inherent risk
- 0:50Speaker 2: corrections of police officers, for there's a little bit of
- 0:53Speaker 2: risk sometimes when you go to work, and as one
- 0:57Speaker 2: of those sort of employees, you accept that risk in
- 1:01Speaker 2: nineteen years old going to work in a bottle and
- 1:03Speaker 2: not coming home. Yeah, that's I said. I can't I
- 1:08Speaker 2: can't explain it. I can't really express that.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it is absolutely devastating. And Bill it's I think
- 1:18Speaker 1: that the really sad part of this is as well,
- 1:21Speaker 1: is that everybody's seen an escalation in the types of
- 1:24Speaker 1: violence and the types of behavior that we have seen
- 1:26Speaker 1: in recent weeks at some of our bottle shops and
- 1:29Speaker 1: at some of our licensed venues. And it's something that
- 1:33Speaker 1: Alice Springs is certainly not immune to.
- 1:37Speaker 2: No, certainly, look, and you're right, there's been increasing in
- 1:42Speaker 2: defending at bottles, I said, and our pubs and clubs
- 1:47Speaker 2: and license venues, and we've been calling this out. I
- 1:50Speaker 2: know I've been calling it out now for months and
- 1:52Speaker 2: months and months for something to be done because the
- 1:56Speaker 2: pressure gips getting put back on the licensees and the
- 2:00Speaker 2: bottilizers and the hospitality to manage these sorts of things.
- 2:05Speaker 2: These people aren't trying to deal with that sort of stuff.
- 2:08Speaker 2: These people work in retail. They're working with people, that's
- 2:11Speaker 2: their job. They're not law enforcement. They're not trying to
- 2:14Speaker 2: deal with these high conflict situations. I was only saying
- 2:17Speaker 2: recently where I think there was some of the bodilizer.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I told the stuff don't engage. Anybody cares safety of
- 2:24Speaker 2: this stuff. And this is where governments need to step
- 2:28Speaker 2: up and need to have the appropriate laws and legislation
- 2:31Speaker 2: in place and give the powers to the people who
- 2:34Speaker 2: aren't trained to do these things to be able to
- 2:37Speaker 2: protect those people, because you can't expect someone who works
- 2:41Speaker 2: in hospitality, someone who works in customer service.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We seem to have lost to their bill. Hopefully, hopefully
- 2:49Speaker 1: you're still there.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That's what I've end up with today.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Bill. Look, it's not you know, this is it's an
- 2:55Speaker 1: absolute tragedy is you know, is what it is. And
- 3:00Speaker 1: there is no doubt that a lot of people are
- 3:02Speaker 1: going to be really quite angry as well. I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: today upon hearing this news, devastation the first thing, and
- 3:08Speaker 1: then then anger that we're in a situation where something
- 3:11Speaker 1: like this can happen to a young bloke that's working
- 3:14Speaker 1: in a bottle shop. I mean, what needs to change here, Bill.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Well, there's got to at the end of that first
- 3:22Speaker 2: and foremost. But we've got to this point because there's
- 3:24Speaker 2: been a lot of there's no consequence for action. People
- 3:28Speaker 2: can admit it and defense nothing happens. So they go
- 3:29Speaker 2: back and they commit another offense, and that behavior escalates,
- 3:32Speaker 2: that escalates, it continues to escalate. What we had last night.
- 3:37Speaker 2: They said we've got a young prolog nine yss lost
- 3:39Speaker 2: his life because there's been no consequence for bloody action.
- 3:44Speaker 2: That's what really pisses my op. I've seen it in
- 3:47Speaker 2: the cast ideal setting. You see people commit this offense, dispends,
- 3:51Speaker 2: this happens, and this happens, and this happens, and they
- 3:53Speaker 2: escalate up to some much high lettle offenses. And this
- 3:57Speaker 2: has now happening in the real world. That's happening the
- 3:59Speaker 2: every day, and it's got to stop otherwise it's going
- 4:01Speaker 2: to be more people or lose the lights.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Well, and Bill, we heard towards the end of last
- 4:06Speaker 1: week that in Alice Springs there was a truck driver,
- 4:10Speaker 1: a tow truck driver heading out to do his job,
- 4:13Speaker 1: a rock thrown at him, and it is looking as
- 4:16Speaker 1: though he's going to lose sight in one of his eyes.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Hell lesure, right, Katie, I was taught yesterday. He's hoping
- 4:25Speaker 2: to get out of the possible today, which she's been
- 4:29Speaker 2: in there since Thursday night last BOYD, it looks pretty
- 4:33Speaker 2: well one hundred percent sure that he's lost the sight
- 4:35Speaker 2: in that eye. So Eves got a guy a game
- 4:38Speaker 2: just done to work and he was actually helping fleets
- 4:40Speaker 2: out after that two year old was in that vehicle
- 4:44Speaker 2: stolen last Thursday night, picking that car up for police.
- 4:49Speaker 2: You just do any job Thursday night, helping out and
- 4:51Speaker 2: rock through the window from a rock throw again which
- 4:54Speaker 2: we've been calling out for so long, hiding square in
- 4:57Speaker 2: the eye, and he's going to lose sight of that.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So it looks like you keep he's of and he's
- 5:02Speaker 2: lost the site. So at fifty two years old, with
- 5:05Speaker 2: all changes, he can't drive for three months, which is understandable.
- 5:11Speaker 2: But the upside, look, there's only one upside. He He've
- 5:13Speaker 2: got his workplace. He works for a small business and
- 5:17Speaker 2: they're all like family. They're going to step up and
- 5:20Speaker 2: do everything they can to get back into the workplace
- 5:22Speaker 2: and supporting through what's going to happen for the change
- 5:26Speaker 2: now to his life, which are of course will be considerable,
- 5:29Speaker 2: but yeah, getting back to work, getting back to normalization,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and that support from his work, college, and look our
- 5:36Speaker 2: community for jump in and support man as well. And
- 5:38Speaker 2: I had no doubt about that. But again, this is
- 5:42Speaker 2: something that's preventable. It's behavior that's been allowed to continue,
- 5:46Speaker 2: it allowed to escalate it and the kids acting with
- 5:49Speaker 2: impunity throwing these rocks. And when Matt got hitting the
- 5:52Speaker 2: eye of the rock, there's a police card right beyond
- 5:54Speaker 2: his track back to the police are following back to
- 5:58Speaker 2: the police compound. Unload this for eenngis yeah, and as
- 6:02Speaker 2: a police can't behind him, and it shows how brazen
- 6:07Speaker 2: these people are. It's like that they don't care for people,
- 6:11Speaker 2: they don't care for community, they don't care for property.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And that's something that's been allowed to happen, which I said,
- 6:17Speaker 2: We've got to turn around.
- 6:18Speaker 1: It has to turn around, something has to change. Bill.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I do want to ask you, obviously the ARA if
- 6:24Speaker 1: you're a by election held over the weekend, Labor one
- 6:28Speaker 1: with a massive majority. Manuel Brown is set to represent
- 6:32Speaker 1: the seat in the Northern Territory Parliament. He secured sixty
- 6:35Speaker 1: six percent of the first preference votes with more than
- 6:38Speaker 1: half of the votes counted, beating the colp's candidate. Now
- 6:43Speaker 1: there has been a big swing towards the Labor Party
- 6:46Speaker 1: in this seat. What is your reaction to that.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh, look, congratulations to Labor, congratulations to Manual for women
- 6:55Speaker 2: the seat. At this point in time, Cati, I really
- 6:59Speaker 2: don't care about Labor retaining their seat and are if
- 7:01Speaker 2: you're all I care about his labor now stepping up
- 7:04Speaker 2: and doing the basic job, providing that basic tenement to
- 7:09Speaker 2: every territory. And that's about keeping a safe, keeping a
- 7:12Speaker 2: safe at home, keeping the safe at work, and keeping
- 7:15Speaker 2: us safe about going about our daily business. So they've
- 7:18Speaker 2: got a new member in congratulations, start doing some real work,
- 7:22Speaker 2: start protecting territories. That's what I say to them.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Well, Bill, I guess so there are going to be
- 7:27Speaker 1: people asking the question out there in the community this morning.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Easily of Finocchio safe as the leader following another by
- 7:34Speaker 1: election loss.
- 7:36Speaker 2: She certainly is Katie Lesson leading a great job journey
- 7:39Speaker 2: during the by election. It was always going to be
- 7:42Speaker 2: difficult for the seale P in that by election. I said,
- 7:45Speaker 2: Lawrence was a good member out there, and of course
- 7:47Speaker 2: Lawrence is or was a Labor member, and of course
- 7:51Speaker 2: people are in the communities know that, and they've supported
- 7:55Speaker 2: Labor because Lawrence was a good member out there. And
- 7:59Speaker 2: that's the way that it's on. At the end of
- 8:00Speaker 2: the day, it's I said, Manuel, now he's got to
- 8:04Speaker 2: step up and he has to now provide that safety,
- 8:09Speaker 2: that safety message to the people in t Wee because
- 8:11Speaker 2: the people in t W the same issues as the
- 8:14Speaker 2: rest of us SO Bill.
- 8:15Speaker 3: From your perspective, and crime, so he's not going to
- 8:18Speaker 3: have to convince his own wing, his own party to
- 8:22Speaker 3: provide those basic tenements of safety people on t SO Bill.
- 8:26Speaker 1: From your perspective, nothing that the CLP could have done differently,
- 8:29Speaker 1: And and you firmly believed that Leah still has the
- 8:33Speaker 1: support of not only the parliamentary wing but the rank
- 8:36Speaker 1: and file of the CLP.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Certainly got the support of the parliamentary wing, Katie one
- 8:42Speaker 2: hundred percent. Could we have done anything differently out there? Look,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you'll always go back in hindsight and say we could
- 8:48Speaker 2: have done this, and we could have done that. I
- 8:52Speaker 2: don't think there's much we could have done which would
- 8:54Speaker 2: have changed the outcome too much. It was always Labors
- 9:00Speaker 2: whose by election to lose. We're always the underdogs coming
- 9:04Speaker 2: into this by election. Look, it would have been great
- 9:07Speaker 2: for Lizzie's a great a really nice bloke and a
- 9:12Speaker 2: great family and they said he worked his hard out
- 9:16Speaker 2: during the by election. We hope to see Leslie back
- 9:19Speaker 2: again for us in twenty twenty four and it may
- 9:22Speaker 2: be a very very different outcome in twenty twenty four.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Well Bill Yan, the member for Namajira. We always appreciate
- 9:30Speaker 1: your time. Thanks very much for having a chat with
- 9:32Speaker 1: us today.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Cheers Katie and thanks for having on this morning.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Thank you
