Latest / Foul Territory / Who wins the AL Central crown showdown? Cody Allen vs. AJ + Marcelo Mayer’s dad wanted out of Boston?
Transcript
- 0:14Speaker 1: All right, the showdown is on.
- 0:16Speaker 2: The White Sox and the Guardians are battling for the
- 0:19Speaker 2: American League Central. Cody Allen joining us back on foul territory. Allen,
- 0:24Speaker 2: beloved in Cleveland, and AJ, beloved in the south side
- 0:28Speaker 2: of Chicago. So this is going to be mostly an
- 0:30Speaker 2: AJ versus Cody battle. But Cody, I'm going to start
- 0:32Speaker 2: here just with a yes or no question, and we
- 0:34Speaker 2: appreciate the time. AJ's got some allergies that are appearing
- 0:37Speaker 2: here already during the conversation. Do you believe that the
- 0:41Speaker 2: Guardians are going to win the division as a yes
- 0:43Speaker 2: or no question?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yes. Okay.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So I'd like you to state your case for why,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and then I think there's going to be a rebuttal
- 0:50Speaker 2: from the dude in the box above you.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Well, first off, they have a one-game lead heading into
- 0:56Speaker 3: the last part of the season. So I think they're pitching.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I think having Jose Ramirez back, I think certain guys
- 1:03Speaker 3: are hot at the right times, and I think pitching
- 1:06Speaker 3: at the end of the day wins.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's great.
- 1:12Speaker 5: You lost 1-0 last night. Go ahead, Adrian.
- 1:15Speaker 4: You lost some runs, too, by the way. And have
- 1:17Speaker 4: you seen the score today? It's 3-0 White Sox in
- 1:19Speaker 4: the first inning. So they're basically going to be tied
- 1:23Speaker 4: after tonight, which we all know the White Sox have
- 1:26Speaker 4: the tiebreaker. So, you know, Guardians can't afford to lose,
- 1:30Speaker 4: and they're going to lose at least two of the
- 1:31Speaker 4: next four. And the White Sox could win all four.
- 1:33Speaker 4: So it might get to where it's kind of a blowout.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I mean, but I will say this, man. The White
- 1:38Speaker 3: Sox have had an opportunity here over the last few days.
- 1:41Speaker 3: to catch up when Cleveland had Boston, right? Like, Cleveland
- 1:45Speaker 3: had Boston, Chicago had Kansas City, and, you know, they
- 1:50Speaker 3: lost a couple games there. But, I mean, it is
- 1:53Speaker 3: going to come down to the last couple days. Like,
- 1:55Speaker 3: it is going to be very, very interesting. And it's
- 1:56Speaker 3: always really interesting this time of year when you have
- 1:59Speaker 3: teams that are out of it. It feels like almost
- 2:01Speaker 3: the teams that are out of it, man, they do
- 2:04Speaker 3: such a good job of playing spoiler. It's almost like
- 2:07Speaker 3: you would rather play the teams that are still in
- 2:09Speaker 3: it than the teams that are out of it just
- 2:11Speaker 3: because you don't know what you're going to get. You
- 2:13Speaker 3: don't know which call-up you're going to get. You don't
- 2:15Speaker 3: know how they're going to use their roster. You don't
- 2:17Speaker 3: know how those guys are going to come out there
- 2:19Speaker 3: and perform because there's a lot of guys for, say,
- 2:21Speaker 3: a Kansas City or an Oakland that are out there.
- 2:23Speaker 3: They're just trying to prove themselves and put themselves in
- 2:25Speaker 3: a position to make the team next year, whereas you
- 2:28Speaker 3: might have a veteran club. Like, you see what's happening
- 2:30Speaker 3: in Houston. You know, Houston's– you know, they're still in it, but, man,
- 2:34Speaker 3: they're kind of slumping at the wrong time.
- 2:36Speaker 5: All right, so– Obviously, before you came on, AJ's like,
- 2:41Speaker 5: the White Sox are going to win it. So you
- 2:43Speaker 5: guys are arguing. We have both sides right now. Could
- 2:46Speaker 5: there not be two more completely contrasting teams in the
- 2:50Speaker 5: sense that you know the Guardians starting pitching. You know
- 2:54Speaker 5: where they're at. You know that the White Sox are
- 2:56Speaker 5: going to bang. You know that the Guardians are not
- 3:00Speaker 5: going to strike out. Colson Montgomery is going to break
- 3:02Speaker 5: the strikeout record today if he hasn't broken it already. Like,
- 3:06Speaker 5: There is just two conflicting types of teams. Which team
- 3:11Speaker 5: will do better or go longer in the postseason?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, man, from a fan's perspective, not just like a
- 3:19Speaker 3: Cleveland guy or whatever, run suppression is at an all-time
- 3:23Speaker 3: high in baseball, right? So the teams I feel like
- 3:26Speaker 3: that can score, man, they're set up well. So, I mean, Chicago, man,
- 3:30Speaker 3: they can score. They have athletes all over the field.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Their lineup is really long. So if they get into
- 3:37Speaker 3: a postseason, a five-game set, a seven-game set, where they've
- 3:44Speaker 3: got an ability to go score some runs, they're dangerous. Now,
- 3:48Speaker 3: on the other hand, too, with Cleveland, you take– Cleveland's
- 3:52Speaker 3: always had such– you know, you've got Gavin Williams at
- 3:54Speaker 3: the top, who's just a monster. But, I mean, you
- 3:56Speaker 3: guys have seen this, where you'll take like fourth and
- 3:58Speaker 3: fifth starters, you'll put them into a bullpen, and maybe
- 4:01Speaker 3: the gaps that Cleveland has had in their bullpen– You know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: Eric Sobrowski's throwing the ball extremely well right now. Obviously,
- 4:08Speaker 3: you've got the big guy at the back end, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 3: closing games. But if you can take Tanner Bybee and
- 4:15Speaker 3: put him in a shorter role or maybe, you know,
- 4:19Speaker 3: one of their other starters, you can put them down
- 4:21Speaker 3: there and they're a lot more effective coming out of
- 4:23Speaker 3: the bullpen. Then you can shorten the game essentially down
- 4:26Speaker 3: to their top three starters. And you take their, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 3: two or three best relievers. You add in a fourth
- 4:32Speaker 3: and fifth starter at the back end that elevates that bullpen.
- 4:34Speaker 3: it becomes a really, really hard pitching staff to kind
- 4:37Speaker 3: of navigate. You look at kind of what the, the
- 4:39Speaker 3: New York Yankees did in 2017, where they had some,
- 4:42Speaker 3: some gaps maybe after their top three starters, they take
- 4:46Speaker 3: certain guys, they put him down to the bullpen with
- 4:49Speaker 3: some monsters down there and they ran it all the
- 4:51Speaker 3: way to game seven of the LCS. All right.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Have you seen the schedule? Have you, have you seen
- 4:57Speaker 5: the schedule?
- 4:57Speaker 4: Do you know who the White Sox played the last
- 4:59Speaker 4: three games of the year?
- 5:00Speaker 3: I know, I know. Well, like I said, like this
- 5:03Speaker 3: time of the year though, man, like, some of those teams, man,
- 5:05Speaker 3: they only get 28 guys.
- 5:07Speaker 4: They only get to bring up two guys. So the
- 5:09Speaker 4: Rockies got what they got kid.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Royals are playing better than the Rockies. No offense, but
- 5:15Speaker 4: I've really played better than the Rockies.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Are they in a, are they a Chicago in Colorado?
- 5:23Speaker 3: Are they in Chicago?
- 5:24Speaker 5: In Chicago. Okay.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I was going to say course field is also a
- 5:28Speaker 3: kind of an equalizer times to you, but I mean, hey,
- 5:32Speaker 3: I would love to have this conversation again on Sunday
- 5:35Speaker 3: and see where we're at because I think both teams
- 5:37Speaker 3: make the postseason, right?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, they're both going to make it. But I think
- 5:41Speaker 4: it's bigger for the White Sox to have the bye
- 5:44Speaker 4: for their pitching because the Guardians have much more pitching
- 5:46Speaker 4: 1-14 pitching-wise, 13 pitching-wise than the White Sox do.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You just have the ability to line up your pitching, right?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Like if you can line up your pitching in that
- 5:56Speaker 3: division series and just wait for whoever emerges out of
- 5:59Speaker 3: that wildcard series, And I'll say this, too. You know,
- 6:03Speaker 3: in a playoff series, when you have two teams from
- 6:05Speaker 3: the same division, AJ, you experienced this quite a bit
- 6:08Speaker 3: where you're duking it out with a team for 162.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And then you see him in the postseason. Man, there's
- 6:15Speaker 3: a lot to be learned, like in the regular season
- 6:18Speaker 3: of maybe how Parker Messick's going to pitch this lineup. Right. Like,
- 6:22Speaker 3: you know, so I think so. The postseason experience or
- 6:25Speaker 3: veteran experience. And I think those two catchers that Cleveland
- 6:28Speaker 3: has in Patrick Bailey and Austin Hedges. could play massive
- 6:31Speaker 3: dividends if Chicago and Cleveland were to face each other
- 6:35Speaker 3: in the first season.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Hi, Max the Bald Eagle from Marathon here. We asked
- 6:41Speaker 1: people if they could do an impression of me. Have
- 6:43Speaker 1: a listen. You can save up to a dollar a
- 6:56Speaker 1: gallon with the Marathon Rewards app.
- 7:00Speaker 5: That last one was pretty good.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Marathon, where fun runs on full. Available at participating Marathon locations.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Terms and conditions apply.
- 7:06Speaker 4: See MarathonRewards.com for details.
- 7:08Speaker 5: What is Cleveland's superpower outside of their pitching? Where is
- 7:12Speaker 5: that superpower in the lineup? Are we still leaning on
- 7:15Speaker 5: Jose Ramirez? I get it. He's starting to turn it around,
- 7:19Speaker 5: but he hasn't looked Jose Ramirez-esque the whole year.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I think they've got some, you know, and I think
- 7:26Speaker 3: most teams right now that are just trying to figure
- 7:28Speaker 3: out how to score runs. Granted, Cleveland has been that
- 7:30Speaker 3: team where they're just looking for some type of recipe
- 7:33Speaker 3: to score. Platooning is kind of their thing, right? David
- 7:37Speaker 3: Fry's come back up and had some big key hits.
- 7:39Speaker 3: So if he's a guy that can really hit left-handed pitching,
- 7:43Speaker 3: you take some, you know, like Stephen Kwan doesn't have
- 7:47Speaker 3: to be on base at a 500 clip. Travis Bazzana
- 7:50Speaker 3: doesn't have to have an OPS of 800 in the postseason.
- 7:53Speaker 3: If you can play those platoons well and maybe have
- 7:57Speaker 3: certain guys late in the game to match up against
- 8:01Speaker 3: the bullpen, I think you can stretch games out. I
- 8:04Speaker 3: think you can string runs across. But obviously, in order
- 8:07Speaker 3: for Cleveland to do what they've got to do, they
- 8:10Speaker 3: have to pitch. They're not going to outslug anybody.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Cody, enough of this. We know the White Sox are
- 8:18Speaker 4: winning the division. So what about the other one? What
- 8:20Speaker 4: about the West? Who wins the West? Is it Houston
- 8:24Speaker 4: or Texas? Basically Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Houston
- 8:29Speaker 4: or Texas? Who wins the West? Nobody looks like they
- 8:33Speaker 4: want to win that division.
- 8:35Speaker 3: It seems like whatever team has an opportunity to get ahead,
- 8:39Speaker 3: they just don't. Houston gets swept. Texas, they're just meddling
- 8:44Speaker 3: around right there. I'll tell you, I think Houston wins it.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I think Houston wins it, but I think If I'm
- 8:51Speaker 3: looking at a team that could do some damage in
- 8:55Speaker 3: the postseason, man, Texas, with what they could do, right?
- 8:58Speaker 3: You could maybe take a rocker and put them in
- 9:00Speaker 3: the bullpen. You've got all the arms there. You've got
- 9:03Speaker 3: the talent. They just haven't quite put it together. But
- 9:06Speaker 3: that team in a short series could be– I would
- 9:11Speaker 3: not want to face Texas in a short series right
- 9:13Speaker 3: now with their pitching.
- 9:14Speaker 4: That's fair.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, who wants to like you got
- 9:24Speaker 3: you get DeGrom, you get lighter, you know, in a
- 9:27Speaker 3: short series. And then you could have Rocker at the back.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You could put Rocker in the bullpen. You've got you've
- 9:32Speaker 3: got these arms that could really just shorten the game
- 9:36Speaker 3: for you. And they have the ability right now. But unfortunately,
- 9:39Speaker 3: like I like Ezekiel Duran, but he shouldn't be the
- 9:42Speaker 3: best player on that team. Like there's some really, really
- 9:45Speaker 3: talented players on that team. And if those guys show up,
- 9:48Speaker 3: you know, I mean, we've all seen it where sometimes
- 9:50Speaker 3: when the playoffs start and the lights come on, certain
- 9:52Speaker 3: players elevate their game. You get a guy like a
- 9:54Speaker 3: Wyatt Langford or a Corey Seager or a Josh John
- 9:57Speaker 3: and those guys get hopped. Holy smokes. That's a really, really.
- 10:00Speaker 3: dangerous club to run up against.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's fair.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:04Speaker 2: You definitely would worry about the offense. Seager and Langford
- 10:09Speaker 2: slumped in the last few games. Adoles Garcia, I remember
- 10:12Speaker 2: a few years back, I mean, he was– Yeah. stupid
- 10:15Speaker 2: in the playoffs.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I mean, that was the time of his life. You know,
- 10:18Speaker 3: and obviously when you can run out, you know, I
- 10:21Speaker 3: think we can all agree that when you go into
- 10:22Speaker 3: a postseason series, you either got to beat, you either
- 10:25Speaker 3: got to beat the other team's ace or you got
- 10:27Speaker 3: to beat their closer. And, you know, if I'm looking
- 10:30Speaker 3: at Houston's ace versus Texas's ace, who do I got
- 10:35Speaker 3: a better shot of beating? I mean, Jacob DeGrom is,
- 10:41Speaker 3: I mean, I can think of a lot of other
- 10:43Speaker 3: guys I'd rather face than him.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Cody, one last one here, and I'm not trying to
- 10:48Speaker 5: pick a side of the argument, but if you talk
- 10:50Speaker 5: about those four teams, you go, okay, short series, you
- 10:54Speaker 5: don't want to face DeGrom. Short series, you don't want
- 10:57Speaker 5: to face Hunter Brown. Short series, you don't want to
- 10:59Speaker 5: face Gavin Williams. Short series, you don't want to face
- 11:05Speaker 5: Sean Burke. Like, isn't that an advantage a little bit too? Yes.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Although he can be nasty.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Dude, I agree with you. I 100% agree with you.
- 11:15Speaker 3: It's like, but the one thing the White Sox do,
- 11:20Speaker 3: one thing that a lot of other teams can't do,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and that's score in bunches. The offense at the big
- 11:28Speaker 3: league level right now is so hard to come by
- 11:32Speaker 3: that their ability to score is just such an outlier
- 11:37Speaker 3: from all these other clubs. So, I mean, it's kind
- 11:39Speaker 3: of like like, I don't know, you guys remember in 2014,
- 11:42Speaker 3: you know, the Kansas City Royals, right? Like, they're starting pitching, like,
- 11:46Speaker 3: it was okay, you know, they had a good bullpen,
- 11:49Speaker 3: but it was all, it always felt like, man, like,
- 11:52Speaker 3: if Hosmer gets hot, or if Lorenzo, if that offense
- 11:55Speaker 3: gets hot, they could make some noise, and man, they just,
- 11:58Speaker 3: they started playing well, they started feeling good, and dude,
- 12:01Speaker 3: I didn't care who you put out there, they were
- 12:03Speaker 3: going to score six, or seven, or eight on a
- 12:05Speaker 3: nightly basis, and that White Sox team, because of their
- 12:10Speaker 3: length of their lineup, if they get a few guys hot, man,
- 12:15Speaker 3: they're just waiting for the next guy to come in
- 12:19Speaker 3: to eventually get them.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I thought that team was more pitching-oriented, no?
- 12:24Speaker 3: What's that?
- 12:27Speaker 1: I thought that team was more about the back end
- 12:28Speaker 1: of the bullpen, no?
- 12:30Speaker 3: It was, but also, too, they scored. They were a
- 12:34Speaker 3: team that would score five runs on eight pitches. It
- 12:36Speaker 3: was like, what the heck just happened? You know, because
- 12:39Speaker 3: it'd be like a walk, base hit, stolen base, double
- 12:43Speaker 3: in the gap, it's 3-0. You know, Alex Gordon puts
- 12:46Speaker 3: one off the, you know, into the fattens, and it's like, whoa,
- 12:50Speaker 3: you know, we were just in a 1-0 ball game,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and now, you know, we're trying to line up our
- 12:55Speaker 3: pitching for tomorrow.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Right, yeah, a little more aggressive, especially at that time
- 12:59Speaker 2: when there was three true average city across baseball.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that Kansas City team has a bullpen that the
- 13:03Speaker 3: White Sox don't have. But, like, from an offensive standpoint... Like,
- 13:07Speaker 3: they have the length. They have guys that can run.
- 13:11Speaker 3: You know, they just keep the pressure on. And the
- 13:14Speaker 3: postseason atmosphere that is already super magnified. Every pitch is
- 13:19Speaker 3: already super magnified. Every matchup is, you know, super well
- 13:23Speaker 3: thought out. When you can just keep the pressure on
- 13:27Speaker 3: over five, six, seven games, you know, you have some
- 13:30Speaker 3: opportunities to kind of, like, break the floodgates open.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Good stuff, dude.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Appreciate the time and good luck to, you know, what
- 13:39Speaker 1: you're watching the next few days.
- 13:42Speaker 3: See you Sunday. We'll talk about it. Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It's the all time saves leader for, for Cleveland. Cody.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I agree with people from Orlando this time.
- 13:50Speaker 2: We love Orlando though. I know five champ, AJ Pruszynski.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So there you have it. Cody also on guardians TV
- 13:56Speaker 2: and to the majors, his podcast with Pilar.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Good stuff, Cody.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Good talking to you, man. Thanks for stopping by.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Thanks guys. See you later.
- 14:04Speaker 4: With all these teams, Cratch, clinching postseason bursts, geez, a
- 14:08Speaker 4: lot of teams have already clinched.
- 14:09Speaker 5: You know what that means? SeatGeek.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You can plan ahead and start buying your postseason tickets
- 14:14Speaker 4: on SeatGeek.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Just because you're not a fan of those teams, though,

- 14:22Speaker 5: going to be electric. It doesn't matter who you're playing.
- 14:24Speaker 5: You're playing the worst team, the game matters. You're playing
- 14:27Speaker 5: the best team, the game matters. You've got to get

- 14:31Speaker 5: the home.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Find the seat you want. If it's green, it means

- 15:11Speaker 2: Okay, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle and also
- 15:14Speaker 2: frequent contributor to.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Splash Hit Territory.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Talking about Marcelo Meyer in a story here and how
- 15:22Speaker 2: excited he was to join the Giants. We teased this
- 15:26Speaker 2: the other day. We'll give it a little bit more time, okay,
- 15:30Speaker 2: from the story. And this is someone on X taking
- 15:34Speaker 2: some bits and pieces just to.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Help us lay this out.
- 15:37Speaker 2: As fans and sports talk media soured on him, Meyer
- 15:41Speaker 2: and his family grew equally frustrated and let the Red
- 15:44Speaker 2: Sox front office know they'd be comfortable with a trade,
- 15:47Speaker 2: according to the article here It also notes that Marcelo
- 15:52Speaker 2: Meyer's father, Enrique, grew up in the shadow of Dodger Stadium,
- 15:54Speaker 2: but he was actually a Yankees fan. And when his
- 15:56Speaker 2: dad found out about the trade to San Francisco, Enrique
- 16:01Speaker 2: said he jumped 10 feet in the air. Quote, I
- 16:04Speaker 2: can't explain how happy we are. And his father is
- 16:08Speaker 2: quoted in here saying that Marcelo got a bad rap in.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Houston, or sorry, in Boston. Marcelo got a cortisone shot.
- 16:15Speaker 1: This is the quote.
- 16:16Speaker 2: A quarter zone shot to be ready to come back
- 16:17Speaker 2: a month and a half early to help the team
- 16:19Speaker 2: in the playoffs. And then he gets the rap. He
- 16:20Speaker 2: doesn't play in pain. That couldn't be further from the
- 16:24Speaker 2: truth in Boston. If you're going well, you're a God.
- 16:26Speaker 2: And if you're struggling, they're going to tear you apart. AJ,
- 16:29Speaker 2: the floor is yours.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I mean, first of all, the craziest part of this
- 16:41Speaker 4: whole thing, besides we're talking to a dad of a player,
- 16:45Speaker 4: who was struggling and got traded. So of course he's
- 16:47Speaker 4: going to be happy when he, when they said the
- 16:50Speaker 4: parents and didn't it say in there, the parents were
- 16:53Speaker 4: talking to the front office of Boston saying we would
- 16:56Speaker 4: like a trade. What is this daddy ball? We want
- 16:59Speaker 4: Enrique was, I think his name was Enrique.
- 17:02Speaker 5: It wasn't even Enrique.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Enrique said the family was talking to the front office.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Like Kratz, what if, what if a dad on your
- 17:12Speaker 4: team comes to you and says, Hey, You know, little
- 17:14Speaker 4: Johnny's not playing very well. Can you trade him to
- 17:16Speaker 4: the rival high school? Like, wouldn't you be like, what
- 17:19Speaker 4: are you doing? This is the big leagues. You got
- 17:21Speaker 4: to perform. He got traded because he wasn't performing. And yeah, well,
- 17:25Speaker 4: maybe he'll do better. Maybe he couldn't handle the big
- 17:27Speaker 4: city of Boston. I don't know. I've never heard anybody
- 17:31Speaker 4: talk like this as a parent. And the fact that
- 17:33Speaker 4: they interviewed a parent and he's giving quotes like this
- 17:36Speaker 4: is also crazy to me.
- 17:38Speaker 5: I love that Susan went in depth. So this is
- 17:40Speaker 5: nothing on Susan, but I love that she went in
- 17:43Speaker 5: depth and found out, you know, because most players give
- 17:46Speaker 5: the stock answer.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Hey, you know what?
- 17:48Speaker 5: It didn't work out. I wish it had, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 5: they really, they believed in me. I love a lot
- 17:52Speaker 5: of people over there, blah, blah, blah. The standard parent
- 17:55Speaker 5: player answer, but to get the feeling of the parents,
- 18:00Speaker 5: look like you can go to a little league game,
- 18:02Speaker 5: a high school travel game or a minor league game.
- 18:06Speaker 5: And there are parents who, who believe in 100% in
- 18:09Speaker 5: their player, in their son, that their son is the
- 18:15Speaker 5: best player out there. Their son, I remember that one
- 18:17Speaker 5: home run that they hit. I remember. The organization's job
- 18:22Speaker 5: is to put their best team out on the field.
- 18:24Speaker 5: And the fact that they had an opportunity to get
- 18:26Speaker 5: a left-handed reliever in Eric Miller for Marcel O'Meara, who
- 18:32Speaker 5: was supposed to be a 1-1 pick in 2021, and
- 18:37Speaker 5: slipped to them at four, you know what? It hasn't
- 18:42Speaker 5: panned out. Is his career over? Absolutely it's not. Could
- 18:46Speaker 5: he do better in a market like San Francisco? Maybe.
- 18:49Speaker 5: He could probably also do better in a market where
- 18:52Speaker 5: he's going to play one position. I think sometimes people
- 18:57Speaker 5: glaze over the fact that this guy wasn't good was
- 19:00Speaker 5: a shortstop, drafted, was coming up as a shortstop, and
- 19:04Speaker 5: then came to the big leagues and didn't play much shortstop,
- 19:06Speaker 5: was learning other positions. So I think there's definitely talent
- 19:10Speaker 5: and ability there. Sometimes I think maybe parents should just, like, hey,
- 19:18Speaker 5: I'd love to do an interview about your son. Okay,
- 19:19Speaker 5: let's talk about him, but I'm not going to say
- 19:21Speaker 5: anything negative about what was going on because you always
- 19:25Speaker 5: think your kid is really good and... Maybe that should
- 19:30Speaker 5: be tempered a little bit.
- 19:34Speaker 2: AJ, can I make a suggestion here and tell me
- 19:37Speaker 2: if I'm being too radical?
- 19:39Speaker 5: Probably.
- 19:40Speaker 1: If I'm Marcelo Meyer and I see this story, I'm like, boop, boop, boop. Dad, stop.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Shut up. You're making me look bad.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Seriously.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I've been around Marcelo Meyer multiple times.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Remember when Daniel Schneeman started tweeting at guys? Like, dude,
- 19:57Speaker 4: what are we doing? Like, dad, stop. You're not helping matters.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Everyone's excited when they get traded. It's a new team.
- 20:06Speaker 4: It's a new opportunity. I mean, my mom has done
- 20:11Speaker 4: some interviews and I'm always like, Mom, you know, you
- 20:14Speaker 4: got to be careful what you say, Mom, because this
- 20:16Speaker 4: stuff is real and this is people's livelihood. So be careful.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Marcelo Meyer is 23. He's almost 24 years old. Like
- 20:29Speaker 5: his family in the scope of baseball have not been
- 20:32Speaker 5: in very many situations where Marcelo Meyer has not done well.
- 20:37Speaker 5: So this is the first time he's struggled. So he
- 20:40Speaker 5: has to deal with it, but his family also has
- 20:43Speaker 5: to deal with it. And I mean, AJ just said, mom,
- 20:46Speaker 5: be careful what you say. There was plenty of times
- 20:49Speaker 5: where I had to tell my family members, pretty much
- 20:52Speaker 5: everybody except for my wife, who would never say anything
- 20:55Speaker 5: bad about anybody, would sit there in games and be like,
- 21:01Speaker 5: and like somebody from my, some other family member would
- 21:04Speaker 5: be like, Like, you can't, like, because they get emotional
- 21:09Speaker 5: with the situation. They say the same things when I'm hitting. Like, oh, man,
- 21:14Speaker 5: strike two. You got to be swinging at that ball. Like,
- 21:18Speaker 5: they want the best for their kid. This example is,
- 21:23Speaker 5: it just came to light. And I think the Meyer
- 21:27Speaker 5: family will probably have, this might be this last conversation
- 21:31Speaker 5: that Enrique has with a media member.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You would hope so i mean you can't control your
- 21:37Speaker 2: parents they can say whatever they want you are connected
- 21:39Speaker 2: to them especially nowadays when quotes come out and then
- 21:41Speaker 2: they surface right nobody knows what the relationship is like
- 21:44Speaker 2: and it seems like it's close enough that they're making
- 21:46Speaker 2: some decisions together here aj the other part that again
- 21:51Speaker 2: takes you in a weird direction is how the story
- 21:54Speaker 2: points out he's a yankees fan so and i'm talking
- 21:57Speaker 2: about enrique his father and then He and his son's
- 22:00Speaker 2: on the Red Sox. Like this sounds ridiculous, but is
- 22:03Speaker 2: it dad being like, Oh, screw the Red Sox.
- 22:06Speaker 1: They're being mean to my son. I don't want him
- 22:08Speaker 1: to be on the Red Sox.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I think it's the blinders that we all do it
- 22:11Speaker 4: as parents. I'm sure Kratz does it with his kids. You,
- 22:14Speaker 4: you look at your kid and say, Oh, he's better
- 22:15Speaker 4: than that kid. That's going to ABC. But then you look,
- 22:17Speaker 4: you know, when you take a step back and you
- 22:19Speaker 4: look at it, every parent has blinders on for their kid.
- 22:22Speaker 5: My kid is the best. My kid is this.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Marcel Meyer was a top five pick in the country. Again,
- 22:28Speaker 4: like Kratz said, he's probably never struggled.
- 22:30Speaker 5: Well, here he is.
- 22:31Speaker 4: He struggled. He gets traded. Yeah, whoop-de-doo, here we go.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Ultimately, every conversation that we talk about something like this,
- 22:39Speaker 5: whether it's Mr. Schneeman or it's Mr. Meyer, whatever it is,
- 22:45Speaker 5: the big leagues is the ultimate what have you done.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Very few guys get to stay in the big leagues
- 22:53Speaker 5: without ever actually doing anything. Yeah, you get to go
- 22:56Speaker 5: to the big leagues. But then you get sent down.
- 23:00Speaker 5: He had a cortisone shot. There's plenty of guys that
- 23:02Speaker 5: are getting cortisone shots. There's plenty of guys that are
- 23:06Speaker 5: playing through pain. So to be like, oh, well, we
- 23:09Speaker 5: read that you were... Unless the organization comes up to
- 23:12Speaker 5: Marcelo and goes, you're not that tough. Don't worry about
- 23:17Speaker 5: people in the media saying or fans saying he's not tough.
- 23:21Speaker 5: We don't need to know the cortisone shots that you got.
- 23:24Speaker 5: AJ Brzezinski essentially never... went on the IL in 19
- 23:29Speaker 5: big league seasons. He was hurting. Things hurt. He was
- 23:34Speaker 5: not 100%. People play through that stuff. You don't get
- 23:37Speaker 5: a trophy for telling us, you know what? I did
- 23:42Speaker 5: do this. Or my son did have to take a
- 23:44Speaker 5: cortisone shot. So stop talking about him not being tough.
- 23:48Speaker 5: It's all what you have. What have you done in
- 23:50Speaker 5: the big leagues? He doesn't perform in San Francisco. He's
- 23:52Speaker 5: not going to stay in the big leagues. That's the point.
- 23:55Speaker 5: I think Marcelo Myers is a really good player. I
- 23:56Speaker 5: saw him right when he got drafted. I think he's
- 23:58Speaker 5: a great kid who's got a great head on his shoulders, smart,
- 24:03Speaker 5: but it didn't work out. And that's okay. He's got
- 24:07Speaker 5: to figure it out in San Francisco or he'll go
- 24:09Speaker 5: to another team.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I have one more component here that ties into Boston,
- 24:15Speaker 2: New York, Philly, and some select markets. I think there's
- 24:20Speaker 2: a big difference between writers in a clubhouse asking questions
- 24:24Speaker 2: and what you hear on the local radio station. You
- 24:28Speaker 2: guys can probably speak to this. I can as somebody
- 24:31Speaker 2: that was in many locker rooms for a long period
- 24:33Speaker 2: of time. It's not often that you're in a clubhouse
- 24:35Speaker 2: and you're getting like consistent. I mean, you might get
- 24:38Speaker 2: some silly questions that are not very well educated or
- 24:41Speaker 2: whatever on the topic, but it's not like someone's sitting
- 24:44Speaker 2: there with a mic.
- 24:44Speaker 1: And Marcello's face being like, Oh, you're soft. What's your injury?
- 24:48Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 24:48Speaker 2: That's the stuff that goes on in the radio and
- 24:50Speaker 2: the radio industry increasingly in some spots with some hosts
- 24:54Speaker 2: gets more popular for the more ridiculous shit that comes out.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:57Speaker 2: We've gone over some of that stuff in the past.
- 24:59Speaker 2: It's always been a thing, but I think it's become
- 25:01Speaker 2: even more of a thing to try and stand out.
- 25:04Speaker 2: So I just think that's an important differentiator. Like, does
- 25:07Speaker 2: he have a mic in his face with people calling
- 25:09Speaker 2: him out like that in the clubhouse? Absolutely not. So
- 25:11Speaker 2: I just don't want to blame like all of Boston
- 25:13Speaker 2: media on this. if there's radio hosts doing bits on
- 25:16Speaker 2: who's soft and who's not and all of that, that's
- 25:19Speaker 2: just normal radio BS. And who cares? Like I would,
- 25:23Speaker 2: I would look at that more as parody, right? Occasionally
- 25:25Speaker 2: we've been called out on different radio stations. I remember
- 25:28Speaker 2: there's the one in Texas, like desperately, I don't know
- 25:31Speaker 2: anything about them, but trying to like, be like, Oh,
- 25:35Speaker 2: that's just what they do. So you gotta not only
- 25:38Speaker 2: brush that off, but kind of laugh at it. Like, Oh, Google,
- 25:40Speaker 2: that was their bit today.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Great.
- 25:42Speaker 4: But you also have to look at it as a
- 25:44Speaker 4: parent and that, you know, Marcel Meyer is not 12
- 25:47Speaker 4: years old. He's 24 years old, right? You have to go, mom, dad,
- 25:51Speaker 4: you can't listen to what people are saying. I'll tell
- 25:53Speaker 4: you what's going on. You don't need to read or
- 25:56Speaker 4: hear or listen to the radio. I know it's harder
- 25:58Speaker 4: with social media, but you don't have to do that.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Come to me, call me mom and dad. I'll tell
- 26:03Speaker 4: you what's happening and I'll tell you the truth. And
- 26:05Speaker 4: I think that also is where people go a little
- 26:08Speaker 4: bit astray. Family members, you And then, oh, this guy
- 26:12Speaker 4: was mean to me and said this about my brother
- 26:14Speaker 4: or my son or whatever. Like, just take a step
- 26:17Speaker 4: back and understand that not everyone opinion matters. What matters
- 26:21Speaker 4: is what you and your kid talk about.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yep.
- 26:25Speaker 1: And if you can't handle it, don't go on social media.
- 26:28Speaker 4: If you can't handle it, then you don't need to
- 26:30Speaker 4: be on social media.
- 26:31Speaker 1: It's not for everyone.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Sometimes people call out, oh, I'm getting threats or I'm
- 26:34Speaker 2: getting bad comments, which like is terrible.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And a death threat is different. I get it.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:38Speaker 1: That's a threat on your life.
- 26:39Speaker 2: But like people just saying, oh, you stink, you suck,
- 26:41Speaker 2: your family stinks, whatever, like terrible. But also like you
- 26:46Speaker 2: have a family member you're close with. They're making a
- 26:48Speaker 2: ton of money. It's their job and their livelihood. If
- 26:50Speaker 2: you don't need social media, maybe skip it for a
- 26:53Speaker 2: little bit.
- 26:55Speaker 5: When my family would like ask me questions, you could
- 26:58Speaker 5: tell when the questions were like– I would just be like,
- 27:03Speaker 5: are you reading the comments? Don't read the comments. Don't
- 27:07Speaker 5: listen to– There was a radio guy in Philly that
- 27:12Speaker 5: after the one season that I had, end of the season,
- 27:15Speaker 5: the guy was doing the wrap up and he was like,
- 27:18Speaker 5: crats is terrible. And my dad was like, I'll never
- 27:21Speaker 5: listen to that guy again. And I'm like, was I
- 27:23Speaker 5: that great though, dad? Did I do awesome? He's like, well,
- 27:27Speaker 5: I thought you had some awesome moments. I'm like, thank you, dad.
- 27:31Speaker 5: But to not ever listen to another guy again who's
- 27:34Speaker 5: just like a rock jock, you know, trying to get
- 27:36Speaker 5: some clicks. Howard Eskin one time called Charlie Manuel out,
- 27:41Speaker 5: who's probably the most beloved manager of all time in Philly,
- 27:45Speaker 5: called him out and said he's a country bumpkin and
- 27:47Speaker 5: he'll never be a good manager here. And that doesn't
- 27:51Speaker 5: affect how you manage. It shouldn't affect how you play
- 27:54Speaker 5: unless you let it.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I loved it. I loved it.
- 28:01Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, I really think that's true. Watch this.
- 28:04Speaker 4: You son of a gun. Watch me shove it up.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I mean, I'll never go back to the Ozzie J.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Mariotti thing.
- 28:11Speaker 5: Here's the thing.
- 28:11Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys remember this, but Ozzie
- 28:13Speaker 4: and J. Mariotti, this columnist in Chicago, they went back
- 28:16Speaker 4: and forth and back and forth and back and forth. J.
- 28:18Speaker 4: would write an article. Ozzie would call him names. Ozzie
- 28:20Speaker 4: had to go to sensitivity training for calling him names.
- 28:23Speaker 5: But you know what J.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Never did? He never showed his face in the clubhouse.
- 28:27Speaker 5: So you know what?
- 28:27Speaker 4: That just made it worse, right? So if you're one
- 28:30Speaker 4: of these guys that wants to do this, that's fine.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Like I tell people all the time, like if I
- 28:34Speaker 4: say something about you and it's nothing personal, but I
- 28:37Speaker 4: tell you what, I'll show my face in the clubhouse
- 28:39Speaker 4: the next day. And if you want to say something
- 28:41Speaker 4: to me, here I am. I mean, early in the year,
- 28:44Speaker 4: Jack Caglione and I had a thing where, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 4: I said he shouldn't have been in the home run derby.
- 28:48Speaker 4: I saw him at the All-Star game. We talked it out.
- 28:50Speaker 4: You guys saw us after. Scott, you saw me with
- 28:53Speaker 4: him at the players party. We were having a good
- 28:55Speaker 4: old time because, you know what? He's like, that's great.
- 28:57Speaker 5: You're right. You know what?
- 28:58Speaker 4: You're entitled to your opinion.
- 28:59Speaker 5: And we moved on.
- 29:00Speaker 4: But if you say these things, this is where players
- 29:02Speaker 4: get mad more than anything. If you say these things
- 29:04Speaker 4: and you don't show up to take my rebuttal or
- 29:08Speaker 4: my little bit of anger that I have towards you,
- 29:10Speaker 4: then they don't respect you. And that's where people get angry, angry.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Yep.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I'm with you, dude.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Even on the show, I mean, we're talking for two
- 29:19Speaker 2: hours a day. We've all done some phone calls where
- 29:22Speaker 2: we're explaining where we're coming from. Sometimes maybe we're misunderstanding
- 29:25Speaker 2: where something's coming from. And then If you're working in
- 29:28Speaker 2: baseball or you're a player or you're somebody else, you.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Know how to get a hold of us.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I had a good chat on All-Star with DeRosa when
- 29:35Speaker 2: we were critical of how Team USA was running during
- 29:38Speaker 2: that time period and we had a great conversation. about
- 29:40Speaker 2: it i told him where i was coming from he
- 29:41Speaker 2: told me where he was coming from old friend of
- 29:43Speaker 2: mine stuff like that so i think it's important but
- 29:46Speaker 2: anyway good talk here i think it was worth the
- 29:48Speaker 2: conversation because parents be careful and parents of youth just
- 29:54Speaker 2: let the kids play
