- 0:06Speaker 1: All right, welcome back in.
- 0:08Speaker 1: It's a North Florida sports network.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I have the pleasure to be joined with.
- 0:12Speaker 1: The host of the fangs up podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Keith Hadley has joined us again.
- 0:16Speaker 1: He told you would be a while.
- 0:19Speaker 1: When we talked to him last, we were talking about potential head coaching candidates for the 19th head coach at Florida A&M University.
- 0:29Speaker 1: They have come up with that coach.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It is none other than James Colesy.
- 0:34Speaker 1: The third.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Keith man, it's great to have you back on how you doing man.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'm well man.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Thanks for having me on.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Hey no good to be on with a fellow troche.
- 0:43Speaker 1: That's right, exactly All right.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Let me ask you first, first and foremost, where are you?
- 0:47Speaker 1: You were right about how long it took to get this hire.
- 0:52Speaker 1: What do you think about it?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Just you like it, or is it who you thought it should?
- 0:58Speaker 2: be, I like it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I like it.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I think it's the lesser of all evils.
- 1:01Speaker 2: If I'm being honest, I think you hired the coach that had the coaching experience, but I do feel like you missed an opportunity to probably bring in somebody who really paid their dues and in the end walked away because they felt slighted.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And that's Ryan Smith.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, wow, that's the defensive coordinator, ryan Smith.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Who, uh, who is the deco coordinator of that dark cloud?
- 1:29Speaker 2: defense, but coordinator has been there for several years and he was the assistant head coach.
- 1:34Speaker 2: He actually hires James Colesy and brings Colesy onto the staff and then you over you pick Colesy over Smitty Rock, which well you know.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think that's outside of football.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Honestly, and I think you touched.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You touched on it a little bit Last time.
- 1:50Speaker 1: We spoke that elephant in the room, of that obvious thing.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Um, he would handle it with nothing but class Um, and he's moved on.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It was at Murray State.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Murray State defensive coordinator.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Linebackers coach up there, yeah, great Love Smitty.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, he really did a great job.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And, uh, it's the pressures on James Colesy now to pick up not only where that defense left off, but, most importantly, I think for him his most important decision is who who's going to run the offense what?
- 2:28Speaker 2: do you have for me on?
- 2:29Speaker 1: that.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Nothing new right now.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Um, last thing, kind of heard where he was looking and I talked to him on Thursday.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Uh, so he was kind of looking to kind of look at some internal hires.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Mainly I took that internal hire to be on the defensive coordinator, spot Offensive coordinator.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I don't know where he goes with it, because at a certain point you not only need an officer coordinator, you need a quarterback's coach, because your current offensive coordinator he didn't really call the plays and probably definitely understands the offense, but he's the offensive line coach, so you need somebody to come in there and coach quarterbacks now.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So we don't have any leads right now.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So who the new OC is going to be?
- 3:09Speaker 2: We don't even know who the new person running the football program is going to be because he left.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So you lost your offensive coordinator, slash head coach, you lose your defensive coordinator, you lose your football operations manager, you lose your recruiting coordinator, right.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So he went to Colorado.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we raise goes to Colorado, yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Um, yeah, everything changed, but you know it was like a culmination there in Atlanta and it was a chance to, I guess, start over and try to.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You know, what would you it's?
- 3:43Speaker 1: Do you think it's going to be more of a rebuild for James or a reload?
- 3:48Speaker 1: How do you?
- 3:49Speaker 1: What's your first instinct in terms of that question?
- 3:53Speaker 2: My first instinct, I think, is to reload more than a rebuild.
- 3:57Speaker 2: The only reason I don't think it's a complete rebuild is because you have so many of the key players coming back.
- 4:03Speaker 2: You have gentle hunt coming back right now.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Kendall bowler is scheduled to come back.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Unless he Does go into the transfer portal, which knock a lot of rumor millers at once that new window opens, he may go that way.
- 4:14Speaker 2: So you have so many of your defensive players that were your big-time players that are coming back.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But at the same point, you can't expect the full reload because you've lost so much right and in recruiting.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Like Kansas on Thursday when we were talking like he wasn't even in Florida.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He's like I'm trying to get these right college players.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yes, you can already see where he's not recruiting high school players.
- 4:37Speaker 2: He's trying to get players who've already had some college experience and bring them in because you got to feel major boys.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That's, that's exactly what you want to see.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You saw someone like Rodney Hill, former fsu running back, who committed when willy before willy simmons resigned, decommitted, went down to miami, but now it's back, committed to the rattlers.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So that's a good, that that's good and that's probably from coming talking to james colesley.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Talking to colesley, a coach said that you know he spoke with hill and his mom and they made the you know family decision that it was the best option.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And you know word out there it was.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It wasn't a lot more than a pw o from me, william, and they may have offered more, but yeah, again, the word is.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And so are you going to spend 75 thousand dollars for a preferred walk on to play the University of Miami or you're going to take a scholarship at family where you are a preferred walk on?
- 5:36Speaker 2: It ain't 75 thousand.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Exactly, you know you have a former seminal in james colesley who you know it was a member of the 93 national championship team.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So that you know that's gonna hopefully, you know, just continue that relationship that I think willy and mike were Starting and that's just a good, solid relationship between two teams right right in the backyards of each other, you know, and I love it.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And william floyd don't forget.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Like work, I'm trying to remember if him and william floyd were ever teammates, like that's something else to look at.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And ron duke Is what the famu dr s.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So the cross connections there are endless.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's just well, especially nowadays.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You know it's these kids are gonna get.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You know if you have a chance somewhere.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I mean you can not move and try to pick up and maybe go play somewhere else or know more about the program and know what you're getting into.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Or you know vice versa.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Um, so you, we're waiting to hear on the offensive staff, the defensive staff, the recruiting.
- 6:45Speaker 1: He said he's out there trying to get Fill it in as he goes.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Um yeah, when do you?
- 6:52Speaker 1: think is the when?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Do you think he has all of his staff together?
- 6:57Speaker 2: If you had a guess, if I had to guess, I'm giving him about a month for all the staff.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Um, just like last time, some of it's just because the state of florida hiring processes and you're familiar with that.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You live in tallahassie, been around tallahassie long enough to know.
- 7:10Speaker 2: You know it takes a little while for the state to get going when it comes to hiring to you.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 2: But then the question is who's who's gonna bring in for like recruiting coordinator?
- 7:20Speaker 2: Do you bring in a guy like billy roll, who's a famu hall of famer, extensive connections with south florida, and now his former player who played in the nfl and retired city bridge water is the head coach Down there at miami north western, I believe.
- 7:34Speaker 2: So, wow, like I think it'll probably be around the the spring game before we really see like the full-on staff as far as everybody, but probably a month before we get the offensive coordinator deep as a coordinator.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I probably get that about a week or two, just because we're all pretty much waiting.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I like what that he's, that he's out there getting Recruiting the experienced players.
- 7:56Speaker 1: That shows that it's the.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It's gonna be changing.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You know, this type of level of the recruiting, just the high, high school recruiting, is so not what it used to be.
- 8:09Speaker 1: You know, I remember I used to buy these dvds of like sudden impact like or some like recruiting class.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I mean I first, yeah, I was such a big deal.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You know, you had camera crews everywhere at everybody's high school.
- 8:22Speaker 1: But with this transfer portal it's now it's really just the colleges and it's not only at the high level, it's all the way to division HBC, use division, you know BCS, so FBS, it's, it's every level, because it's about, it's it's changed the game in life.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I have a cousin who's all county, all district down here and he's got like one, two division, one offers, whereas, man, you back this up before the advent of the transfer portal and these extra cova years that kids Maybe get into a g5 off right.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I literally went up to Quinn Gray and asked him like hey, you know, at the swag championship I said, coach, you looking for a high school defensive, any like?
- 9:06Speaker 2: No, I'm looking for transfers and that's a division to school right, that's, that's I.
- 9:12Speaker 1: That's eye-opening man, it really is.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's like that.
- 9:15Speaker 1: The game has changed.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It's it's almost Preparatory now, just the high school is and different.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You just have to take your opportunity and Somebody's watching.
- 9:25Speaker 2: You know you can college balls like minor league baseball to me, bro, if I'm being honest you know, yeah, it seems yeah, yeah yeah, and the schools that are the majors.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, except like what?
- 9:36Speaker 1: And then you have the NFL draft, but there's no correlation, right?
- 9:40Speaker 1: There's no, there's no rules.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You know we're what, what's to say, and then money rules the day.
- 9:45Speaker 1: That's what it's gonna come down to, as you saw right here in town.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I, you know you that that's what it's gonna come down to money rules the day.
- 9:53Speaker 1: It's gonna take longer to get your staff in order, when you know you're trying to get the money Right.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know it's gonna take so, but there's no rules to stop anybody you know from stopping this or making this like when it's not an advantage.
- 10:12Speaker 1: What, like when is the end game here?
- 10:14Speaker 1: You see the NCAA coming down on different schools started with FSU, now they're coming after Tennessee, florida to Eventually, and I think Tennessee might be the one they're just gonna suit.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean, they're they're already Drafting up lawsuits against the NCAA, florida State, sioux and the ACC.
- 10:34Speaker 1: What do you think the feds got?
- 10:37Speaker 2: to get involved.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Right to get this thing straight now, right.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I think I see it.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I think this is gonna be over.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I think what?
- 10:44Speaker 2: What you're seeing from the sec of the big 10 Are the two major conferences that are saying, okay, especially the case of the big 10, we've taken up the pack 12 and every team that we wanted from there.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And now the next thing is for the sec.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Are you gonna start taking some of these teams and we're going to create a super conference and gonna make it as close to the NFL and professional experience as possible.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're gonna go from there, but I think they're gonna break away from the NCAA.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Oh yeah and it's really it's gonna go from being like minor league baseball to more like the English Premier League with the English soccer Leagues, where you have all these minor league and smaller leagues of Soccer without the delegation, that, amazingly, without the really yeah, see.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Now See, that would actually be enticing if they could come up with a formula to earn it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Still we're like, hey, you can earn your way up, you know, but it feels like they don't want that to happen.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It's almost just like political now, or they just want to hold power and these conferences aren't gonna want to like yeah, they don't want to just be like hey, we want to get opportunity here.
- 11:49Speaker 1: No, it's like we want to keep opportunity as small as possible for our schools, for our chances to get.
- 11:54Speaker 1: You know the, it's really.
- 11:59Speaker 2: They're gonna swallow up all the all the big time revenue producing schools.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Like I'm not gonna lie, my wife's UCF graduate UCF gonna get swallowed up.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I'm I don't care who you are.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That school has too much in Such in such a little time.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Ucf is the largest school in the nation, yeah, you know, and they fluctuate between them and the University of Texas.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Right, you think that they can't, within five to ten years, galvanize that alumni base?
- 12:28Speaker 2: Oh, I know, really, continue to build it up like that.
- 12:31Speaker 2: To me, that's a sleep, that's a giant that ain't sleeping.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Right, that just hasn't come to a fruition.
- 12:36Speaker 2: One of these conferences is gonna get them.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah Well, I think you're.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You're also seeing what, how the sport has changed too with.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You know the way it is.
- 12:46Speaker 1: You saw in Boston College the coach going going to take the DC job in Green Bay, you know, and he even said came out and said why he was like I can't deal with all the Unraising and politicking it takes now nowadays, you know, and he went.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I just want to coach ball, and the football aspect is just Little bitty part of it.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Almost everything else kind of seems.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Far greater, as we.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Small schools.
- 13:16Speaker 2: You can't increase the size of the football stadium.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Like right, boston College is kind of landlocked and where they are when right you mean, it's Florida State.
- 13:25Speaker 2: You see what they're doing to the stadium there.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, they're making it like a pro stadium.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, just so you can renovate the suites.
- 13:31Speaker 1: It's just like any other.
- 13:33Speaker 1: If you look at any other pro stadium, that's what the that's just on with the times, man, you're gonna see that across the board, you know, and yeah, it's gotta be, it's gonna be.
- 13:44Speaker 1: They're gonna get to move to jobs, employees, what?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Ah?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Well, we got ourselves a coach, though.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Fam you does.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Thank, fam, you's got a coach a good, a good decision.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I think I'm happy for coach, for coach James Colzy.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I think he was very humble by the opportunity.
- 14:02Speaker 1: It seemed like I Wish him nothing but the best.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yes, won't be the first to coach this year.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Wait for in the basketball season he will probably have another coach.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, coach.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Shoot you.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Yes, that that could be on both teams.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought Hamilton wasn't gonna make it, but they.
- 14:23Speaker 2: He started to step up a lot.
- 14:25Speaker 1: He's not gonna lie.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I wrote him off last month.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Well, yeah, he stepped up, but he was not.
- 14:30Speaker 1: They really Crap the bed this last weekend but you know he's so he's been around so long.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So how much longer do you want to even deal with this new age type of you know game?
- 14:44Speaker 1: Someone like that's been around as long as he has.
- 14:47Speaker 1: But, keith man, we got a lot to look forward to.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I might have to get you on here around Basketball season.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Ones down, we'll talk some hoops, see where you have a fam.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You going in the future Maybe get some bracketology out of you.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Get ready for national side of the.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah exactly, man.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah, get ready for all that stuff.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Um, who you got in the Super Bowl?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Before I let you go, I Hate to do it.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I, as bad as I want the chiefs to win, I'm going 49ers.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Oh, okay, yeah, you want the chiefs to win.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Do I do, I just yeah.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I like Patrick Mahomes, I like his game.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Man.
- 15:25Speaker 1: He's him and Andy Reed and Kelsey that like they figure it out, they're gonna figure it out, and those drives, they can just get them nine errors.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:35Speaker 1: At the end of the day, though, you got Purdy vs Mahomes.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I think I was surprised to see the Niners initially favored, but We'll see it's gonna be a good one.
- 15:45Speaker 1: It feels like a deja vu again four years ago.
- 15:47Speaker 1: We get the same Super Bowl matchup and same presidential election.
- 15:51Speaker 1: We're just gonna play it back.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Gonna play it back, man.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Keith man, thanks for coming on and we'll talk to you in the future, all right, All right, I did appreciate you having me.
- 16:01Speaker 1: All right, man, see you later.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yep, we had to go.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Well, we got to get on out of here.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I want to thank Keith Hadley for coming on.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You need to go subscribe to the Fangs Up podcast wherever you get your podcast.
- 16:18Speaker 1: He's right about how long that would take.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But good luck to James Colsey the third.
- 16:27Speaker 1: He's going to do a good job.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I wish you remember in the 93.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Oh boy, hard to believe he's been around.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I went to Canada.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I got a lot of coaching in Canada before he made it back here to the States.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I'm not asking about that Now.
- 16:53Speaker 1: He handled that cold weather up there.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Oops, there it went.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Saturday night, hamilton questioning leadership on his own team, the Knowles give up 101 points to the Cardinals.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Ouch, in a must win game.
- 17:17Speaker 1: They did not and they lost big time to the last place team in the cup.
- 17:25Speaker 1: They'll be added again in the next few days.
- 17:28Speaker 1: They'll be added again tomorrow night.
- 17:30Speaker 1: So, oops, there it is again.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We'll hopefully see a better performance out of the Knowles and new basketball struggling Might be looking for a new head coach.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Keith would tell you Super Bowl coming up.
- 17:50Speaker 1: My first reaction is I think the Chiefs are going to win.
- 17:55Speaker 1: You know, I think they have the better quarterback, I think their defense matches up with anybody and I think the offense does exactly what it has to do.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It can sometimes be explosive or it can just like go on an eight minute drive with seven first downs and do exactly what it needs to do.
- 18:20Speaker 1: My first reaction is I'm going to say the Chiefs.
- 18:24Speaker 1: But I'll think about it some more, we'll analyze it, we'll go over it and we'll talk about it Next time right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
