- 1:22Seven attendees,
- 1:24multidisciplinary panel, which I'm really excited about because after all,
- 1:28the expo does kind of sell itself as a multidisciplinary conference.
- 1:32So I'm really excited to bring this to you.
- 1:34So if you have joined us live, then the advantage you've got is you can ask
- 1:38our guests questions live. You can comment yourself.
- 1:41And I'm hoping that if you do join us live, you can put your own experiences,
- 1:44particularly if you went there.
- 1:45And also, if you didn't go there, I really want to hear tonight why you didn't go.
- 1:48Were there barriers? was it too expensive could you do not find accommodation
- 1:52had you seen it all before were you not oppressed with the program or maybe
- 1:57there was other reasons you just couldn't afford to take two days off clinic
- 1:59whatever it was okay because i really want to hear the pros and the cons for it.
- 2:04So that's it we'll hear hey everybody hey uh say hi right so what we're going
- 2:10to do then for the benefit of the people who have joined us on the podcast i
- 2:14reckon this might be tricky but i'm going know call out your name and then maybe
- 2:19just within 20-30 seconds tell us your name your profession,
- 2:23where you're from or where you're based and how
- 2:27many times you've been to Therapy Expo that make sense so I'll go around in
- 2:30no particular order I'll just read them out from a crib sheet Natalie Heng you're
- 2:35first you're up I'm a clinical and sports massage therapist based in London
- 2:39and this was my first time right Therapy Expo fantastic thank you very much Shannon Byrne,
- 2:45Thanks so much. I am Shannon Byrne. I'm the owner of Rebound Injury Clinic in Dublin, Ireland.
- 2:49And I also lecture in Portfella Institute in their Latter-dayer Science and
- 2:53Sports Therapy programme.
- 2:55I'm a sports therapist and I think this is year four I've gone to the therapy episode, three or four.
- 3:01Excellent. Thank you very much. Brilliant. And Danielle Peters?
- 3:04Hi, I'm Danielle Peters. I run Body Health Gatwick.
- 3:08In Gatwick, as it says, I'm a graduate sports therapist.
- 3:11I believe this is the third time I've been to Sports Therapy Expo myself.
- 3:16Amazing. Steve Yeoman. Hi, Steve. I'm based in Warrington.
- 3:21I'm a sports therapist and that's my second time I've attended.
- 3:27Brilliant. Thanks a lot, Steve. And Sharia, do you want to try his surname?
- 3:31Go on, Sharia Kirazang. pretty close i'll say
- 3:34that's a nice try cancel on i know
- 3:37it's there really close yeah really close so hi i'm
- 3:40sharia i am from um we physio and
- 3:43can in care physiotherapy in based in glasgow
- 3:46this is my first time in therapy expo brilliant thank you much sharia and emily
- 3:52sweet hi i'm emily i'm a physio i'm based down in plymouth i'm a physio in the
- 3:59nhf but also just recently joined And Islasal, so the private physio clinic,
- 4:05And this is my first year of time, Nick. Fantastic. Thank you very much.
- 4:09And last but no means least, Nikki Sherman.
- 4:12Sherman. See, I told you I'd get it wrong.
- 4:16Yeah, I'm Nikki Sherman and I am Sherman Podiatry. I'm in Worcester.
- 4:21I've been working 25 years pretty much now. And I've been to Therapy Expo about
- 4:25three or four times. I can't quite remember.
- 4:28Fantastic. I'm so happy, first of all, that you've all said yes,
- 4:31which is amazing because I know you're a busy clinician. Some of you literally
- 4:33finished about five minutes ago. So I really appreciate your time.
- 4:37And also such a lovely selection. There's people who are from different disciplines,
- 4:40which was going to be really interesting as well. And people have been there
- 4:43one time, two times, four times.
- 4:45So there should be lots of different experiences.
- 4:48Nicky Mansfield is in the house, obviously. Nicky Mansfield says,
- 4:51hey, all, sorry I'm late. Head cold, messing with my brain.
- 4:54Nicky, all I can say is it's not man flu. So just you're fine.
- 4:57Don't worry. You can't get the worst kind of cold and flu out there.
- 5:00Exactly. Thank you, Steve. I'm glad you joined me on that.
- 5:03Brilliant. Right. So thank you for joining us, Nicky. And don't forget,
- 5:05people, if you are listening, do put some questions in there or put some experiences
- 5:08how therapy expert went for you.
- 5:12So let's I don't want to start on it. Maybe it's not a downer,
- 5:15but I think the elephant in the room normally, which listeners will want to
- 5:18know about, is about the cost.
- 5:20Now, this will obviously vary on people. It's not going to vary too much because
- 5:25you're all health care providers.
- 5:26So none of you are making none of you got Mercedes outside your front door because
- 5:30you're in the wrong profession for that. But I'm interested,
- 5:33and we'll go around the room again, I'm interested whether it was a barrier
- 5:36for you, whether it was an issue.
- 5:38Obviously, you all made it in the end. I'm wondering how you made it.
- 5:42Did you have to structure something or how did you manage to get two days off clinic?
- 5:45And I appreciate it will vary depending on whether you're by yourself or in
- 5:48a multidisciplinary clinic or whatever.
- 5:50But I'm interested about costs. So maybe let's go in the same order on my list.
- 5:54I don't leave people out. Natalie.
- 5:56Was it a problem for you? So I think I got the early bird.
- 6:00So it's like 120 pounds or something rather than 180 pounds.
- 6:05And initially I actually was like, oh, I don't know.
- 6:08I need to, I was having some cash flow stuff. So my friend actually bought the
- 6:11ticket for me, which was a mistake because there were issues with the app.
- 6:16But I feel like 120 pounds.
- 6:17Yeah, I think that's decent for
- 6:19like two days of like jam-packed full of stuff. You get like your CPD in.
- 6:24So I feel like I think it's worth it and you can like call it an expense as well so,
- 6:30how is it for because you've got the you've got that the entrance
- 6:33and there is early bird tickets and also STA members
- 6:36get load things and you might be with an association who gives you
- 6:38discounts and stuff but what about the extra costs here some
- 6:41people say like you went to birthdays did you you go
- 6:45to two days and how was accommodation did you have something else sorted out or
- 6:47how did you manage that Airbnb with a couple of friends
- 6:50so that was that was pretty decent we went we
- 6:53could win for a cheap cheap place maybe next time i'll
- 6:56go for a less cheap place but yeah it was
- 6:59really was it a very cheap place then yeah yeah
- 7:03yeah i will yeah yeah we did that one year yeah yeah
- 7:06i made him say i could put my hand down the side of the bed and i'm never going to forget
- 7:09what i found that's horrible yeah but no airbnb we
- 7:12mentioned that like four months ago we were doing white people listen now's the
- 7:14time get your airbnb i know somebody the hands on
- 7:17hub of like 18 people in a house and it was like 1300
- 7:20for 18 people just like 65 pounds
- 7:23each or something it was like doable for two nights so yeah
- 7:27good shout so you managed it in the end that's good okay let's go to Shannon
- 7:32what was it like for you is it ever I wasn't as lucky on the accommodation front
- 7:36I was very well prepared from the tickets because like I said I've been to therapy
- 7:40a couple of times so I typically try and buy the tickets when I'm there and then by the.
- 7:47I don't know if anybody does max that way, but because I've bought it so far, it's nearly free.
- 7:52Luckily enough, I booked my flights early on too, and I had another event in Blackpool the weekend.
- 7:56So I was able to double up. So I was flying to the UK on Wednesday morning.
- 8:01I'd be in the airport at 4am. Wasn't sure how my brain was going to hold up for the full day.
- 8:05And then I actually only arrived home back to Dublin last night.
- 8:08So I kind of got a dual trip this time around, whereas normally that would be
- 8:11two flights in two weeks for me.
- 8:13The flights, because I booked them early enough, I want to say maybe three or
- 8:18four months ago, were quite cheap.
- 8:20The accommodation, I must have gone on and priced the accommodation and not booked it.
- 8:24So when I went on maybe three weeks before the expo to double check where my
- 8:29hotel was, I realized I didn't book anything.
- 8:31So for my two nights in travel lodge, I think it cost me close to £300.
- 8:36So definitely an expensive mistake to make that I probably won't make again.
- 8:42And I probably wouldn't do the red-eye flight on the Wednesday morning and again
- 8:46either because by the time I got to the end of the day, my brain was definitely ready to switch off.
- 8:50So the extra expense of maybe another hotel the night before would probably
- 8:55be beneficial in terms of taking in as much information as possible on the day.
- 8:59And so again, another kind of added expense for anybody that's coming from a little bit further out.
- 9:03But again, I buy my ticket well enough in advance for it.
- 9:06I think I paid £99 plus fat and then the extra £20 for the recordings for next year.
- 9:11So I think it might have worked out as 150 quid in advance which I don't think
- 9:16again is too bad considering the amount of CPD that you're getting the network
- 9:19and all that sort of stuff too but I might book the hotel a little bit earlier this time around.
- 9:24Yeah so booking ahead yeah doing it earlier on. Or like that jumping in with
- 9:28somebody else I was traveling on my own so maybe if I was sharing the hotel
- 9:32with a colleague and we were splitting the cost it might not be as bad and but
- 9:36traveling on my own it was definitely more expensive.
- 9:38Okay, brilliant. How about Danny? How's it for you? Yeah, good.
- 9:43So actually, I learned from my mistakes. I did. I went up on the Tuesday night.
- 9:48Yeah, because my brain can't handle a 4 or 5am start and then a full day of learning.
- 9:56Like I get to about two o'clock and I'm just fried.
- 9:59So yeah, I went up Tuesday night.
- 10:02So for me to get to Birmingham is about three hours, three and a half hours.
- 10:05So it's not the quickest journey. this year I was a bit lucky because
- 10:09my other half happened to be working in Leicester in the
- 10:12same week which is an hour away so we actually we
- 10:14ended up staying in Coventry which is about half
- 10:18hour 40 minutes away and I've been to Birmingham
- 10:21a couple times now for various things and honestly if
- 10:24you just stay outside near a train line it is
- 10:27so easy to get in on train and it's
- 10:30much cheaper than staying in actual Birmingham city as
- 10:33well so yeah I highly recommend like going just
- 10:35to coventry instead or or look look at the
- 10:38train line because they're dead easy so oh
- 10:41yeah nicky manseo just seen yeah staying over in coventry yeah
- 10:44so there you go just stay slightly outside you'll probably
- 10:47get a really nice accommodation as well for the price ours
- 10:50is beautiful it's like on a farm it's lovely great advice
- 10:55yeah yes that's brilliant yes staying slightly outside yeah nicky
- 10:58has said recommend staying over in coventry much cheaper than solihull broom
- 11:01dead easy travel by train or drive stay near the a45 and
- 11:05it's pretty much 15 minutes in a straight line to the nbc it's true
- 11:08if anybody's not aware of the nbc there's literally like a 10 minute skywalk
- 11:11they call it don't they from the station into the actual conference area so
- 11:14all these things may help you if if that was your fear um of not going for not
- 11:20going this year thank you danny uh steve i was in the very fortunate position
- 11:24that i was taken as a guest of one of the exhibitors.
- 11:30So my ticket cost me nothing. Oh, nice. It's who you're now, isn't it, Steve?
- 11:35All it cost me was the, obviously my petrol, my hotel, which I stayed at the
- 11:41Premier over the road and just walked across the car park.
- 11:46So that's the best way to do it. How long were you stalking this exhibitor for
- 11:51in order to build up a relationship and be able to stay in their house?
- 11:54I actually know that exhibitor actually asked me if I wanted to go because I bought at the cost.
- 12:02When they mentioned it, I said, I don't know because of the cost implication
- 12:06and taking time at work, et cetera.
- 12:09And then they said, no, come as my guest. Fair enough. So I don't know if you
- 12:14noticed on my tag, it did say exhibitor.
- 12:16I didn't. Because I don't know. No reason to look at your chest. Yeah.
- 12:20I know. That's good. That's a nice little success story. So good on you.
- 12:23If you can manage to, if you know somebody who's exhibiting,
- 12:26that's a great way to do it. Okay. Nice one.
- 12:29Cecily hisslop says i stayed in the hands-on hub
- 12:32party house highly recommend it yes i've still
- 12:35got that picture you drew we won't go any further than that shall we
- 12:38know injury muskine has joined us saying sorry i'm late people who have joined
- 12:41us late if you went to therapy expo then yeah feel free to put some stuff in
- 12:44the comments and we will pick up on them sharia how did you manage to get from
- 12:48sunny glasgow sunny glasgow definitely so because i am luckily in the.
- 12:57The tickets for for for the expo and
- 13:00my boss she get it like she got it for me so i
- 13:03don't have to pay anything thank you so much natalie
- 13:06thank you so much to like my boss your name natalie sorry
- 13:09i'm also for for the trains
- 13:12and i took the train from glasgow central and it's
- 13:15like to me probably five hours it's really
- 13:18tired and also i travel the same day so i
- 13:21wake up for like four and then reached there for like 10 half
- 13:2510 and then i luckily but i
- 13:28mean luckily i got the hotel from trip so it's not
- 13:31too bad for one night 100 quits but um
- 13:34so in general it's quite pretty well worth it for
- 13:37cpd but quite a long journey to
- 13:40travel from glasgow and you know just two day and one
- 13:43night and back at the second day and i
- 13:46think i reached glasgow probably like 1 a.m on friday
- 13:50that's tough going that's hardcore yeah i think there was a
- 13:52few people there this year who were part of a team i
- 13:55seemed i don't know whether i just started looking for it but i
- 13:58think um emily you were part of a team weren't you did your but actually i might
- 14:01be starting off an issue here did your boss pay for you emily did you have to
- 14:04pay yourself no no i was i was really lucky yeah shout out to mila for getting
- 14:09trouble with island no there was an like a couple of my colleagues as well,
- 14:15they were meant to be going and then they couldn't go.
- 14:17So that's why Isla had the spare ticket. So I kind of, yeah,
- 14:22went very last minute, like only had a couple, couple of weeks notice.
- 14:26It's like I work like yeah full-time in
- 14:29the NHS and the MSK outpatient department so
- 14:32it just happened to be that on the Thursday I had annual leave anyway so I didn't
- 14:37have to request anything and then for me to go all day on the Wednesday I only
- 14:41had half and had the afternoon of patients to sort of reorganize so I was very
- 14:47fortunate to be able to go because I think if I had yeah full
- 14:50obviously diary for a couple of couple of days and
- 14:53only a couple of weeks notice I wouldn't have been able to attend so yeah
- 14:56i was really lucky and accommodation wise we did
- 14:59airbnbs there was five of us in in total so yeah we um just split it all and
- 15:06again yeah i love amazing and drove us all up so i guess that was booked again
- 15:10a bit in advance was it to get a decent airbnb yeah i believe um i think i did
- 15:15the early bird offer i think as well so yeah she booked it.
- 15:20Yeah yeah i mean anyone who pays full price for therapy expo is missing out
- 15:26something huge because it's i think it's like full price is on about 300 quid
- 15:29or something or it's like a fortune,
- 15:32so it's interesting i wonder whether people out there who do work in a in a
- 15:35clinic with a few people maybe there is a conversation to be had there with
- 15:38your boss because i imagine there's some deal if they say look i've got three
- 15:40workers who want to go along to this event or,
- 15:42maybe there is a way of doing it and then also you can book an airbnb and so
- 15:46yeah interesting Yeah, and interesting
- 15:48from like being outside of the private setting for a long time.
- 15:53I actually didn't know Therapy Expo was a thing.
- 15:57And I guess, yeah, a lot of my colleagues in the NHS and things,
- 16:01if we didn't know about it, we wouldn't think about booking it in a year in advance.
- 16:06And then we would get to the point of coming close to time being like,
- 16:09yeah, there's no way we could afford that and get the time on.
- 16:13Yes, you didn't know about it. So, yeah, we'll talk to marketing at Therapy Expo.
- 16:17Later on the fact that and you work whereabouts in what hospital so i'm um part of um,
- 16:24Yeah, I am basing call. I'm so touched on that. I'm a better side of the Tamar Bridge.
- 16:29But no, I work in Derriford, Plymouth, so UHP.
- 16:33Okay, yeah. So it's interesting that they don't know about therapy expert. Yeah.
- 16:37Okay, well, we'll talk about not being in the private sector,
- 16:41what you've found then, if it was useful to you.
- 16:43So we just have, Nikki, how was it for you? Was there a cost ever a barrier for you?
- 16:48Well for us in podiatry we have the
- 16:51annual conference as well at the same time it's the same week
- 16:54last year I managed to double book myself when I was at therapy expo
- 16:57one day and then I it was very close anyway but this year I managed to be very
- 17:02organized and I was just coming to therapy expo because I work in Worcester
- 17:05and and Worcester's not that far anyway it's like 40 minutes to Birmingham so
- 17:10me and the physio that works with me we sort the kids out and then And we tend
- 17:14to get there like a little late.
- 17:16So we tend to actually miss the first talk, which is really annoying because
- 17:19often the first one is one of the ones I want to go and see.
- 17:23And yeah, we generally book ahead in advance anyway. So that's all fine.
- 17:28But parking can be a problem. So as long as you book the parking in advance,
- 17:32too, then it's a bit cheaper.
- 17:34So it all seems to be in advance, isn't it? Which isn't a surprise, I think.
- 17:37But the amount of feedback we get, people are kind of thought that was too much, too much.
- 17:40There does seem to be a correlation between people
- 17:43who maybe aren't that organized or didn't book it ahead it seems
- 17:46to be the biggest reason that's why we spent so long in the first kind of 20 minutes
- 17:49talking about it because it's the biggest obstacle i think it doesn't have to be that expensive
- 17:52let's move on to you you've got
- 17:55a decent deal you've arrived there what about content
- 17:58so i think it's interesting i don't know how
- 18:01to do this it is interesting that we have got a selection of different disciplines
- 18:04here in terms of sports massage therapists sports therapists physios podiatrists
- 18:08i don't know whether to do it in order or whether just to see if there's any
- 18:12correlation between them what do you think guys should we go around and do it
- 18:16in order in terms of profession or should we just say what we enjoyed and see
- 18:19if there's a correlation.
- 18:21They're all looking at me going i don't know matt you're the host you tell us okay let's start with,
- 18:25massage therapists okay massage therapists so natalie that's you yeah how did
- 18:32you find it being a massage there first of all just to reiterate when did you
- 18:36qualify when you say you're a sports massage therapist how long ago did you
- 18:38qualify i started the first course in 2018 and then,
- 18:45so i did like a beginner's thing and then i did the acmc i trained with the
- 18:49jing okay yeah and then so i think you know those and then there's covid so
- 18:54like i know 2019 like like.
- 18:582019 2020 something like that i guess and is there a level then involved what level would you be,
- 19:04Level six. I know I'm not supposed to say that with this. Yeah.
- 19:07You can say that in the show. It's fine.
- 19:09Level six. Yeah. I did the BTEC. The BTEC six. Yeah.
- 19:13So you're allowed through your certification to work with people who are injured.
- 19:18Yeah. Yeah. It's not the same. It's often with massage therapy.
- 19:21If it's after 2012 or something, we think you can only work with kind of pre
- 19:26or post event or it's all very complicated now.
- 19:29But you are actually a massage therapist who is allowed to work with injured people. Yeah.
- 19:33Yeah. okay so really in the same bag as sports therapist not
- 19:36to don't start stoning me sports therapist if you've done three or
- 19:39four years degrees or bscs or anything but i i was
- 19:42under the impression you were just not just a terrible thing to say that
- 19:45you i don't i don't you know rehab stuff like that i don't really you know
- 19:48do i have like basic sort of suggestions but i definitely
- 19:51you know that's kind of beyond like my scope so i'm
- 19:54sure that there's a big difference between sports therapists and
- 19:57and you know massage therapists there is
- 20:00if it's a level three massage therapists let's go with let's chuck
- 20:04kind of certificates on the wall aside let's go with what you
- 20:06all found one of the one or two
- 20:09things you really were surprised and you found really useful so maybe sharia
- 20:14let's start with you what did you what stood out for you in terms of positive
- 20:18useful information um so my backgrounds besides the clinics that i work for
- 20:24msk i also work as a sport physio for football as well.
- 20:29And from my point of view, there's two main things that I think is quite useful
- 20:34for the first of all, like the talks, especially sport related.
- 20:39They might not, they might don't have that much football related.
- 20:42They might have a lot of, you know, shoulder injury and runner,
- 20:45but there's a brilliant talk by Dr.
- 20:48Bilos about ACL courts reconstruction, which is we've seen a lot in football, is really useful.
- 20:54We normally see hamstring graft.
- 20:57Right now, it seems like we are going to the new era of quartz graft as well. It's really useful.
- 21:03And then in terms of MSK, as a physio who work in private clinics,
- 21:07I initially quite struggled with the managing times,
- 21:12how to maximize managing the time and
- 21:15maximize the productivities so i think
- 21:18most of the talk is really really useful like kind
- 21:21of shave your ideas how you can
- 21:24manage things not just only the knowledge
- 21:27and also how you manage productivities while you're working that's what i love
- 21:32the kind of business related yeah anybody in particular stand out for you with
- 21:36regards to that do you remember any names or a few of them for am for You mean
- 21:42for the business and maximizing I like TikTok efficiency from Mike James, right?
- 21:47James is quite good. And then because I don't go and listen to that much kind
- 21:53of like business and entrepreneur idea how to manage the clinics,
- 21:58because obviously I'm not the clinic owners.
- 22:00But I like the idea of kind of like how you manage in terms of your being a
- 22:04physio and how you can help patients as a whole.
- 22:07And also you can maximizing productivities and not like doing everything in one hour.
- 22:15Try to prioritize things which is really good okay
- 22:18so two themes there we're going to throw to the floor first of
- 22:21all sports specific stuff did anybody feel that they would have liked
- 22:24something more sports you can't cover all the sports but
- 22:27would you i don't think there was many talks there that were particularly sports
- 22:30specific were there or did i miss them there's netball yeah and and also um
- 22:37the um the runners the interrunner that you did oh yeah there's an I feel like
- 22:44we should have more varieties of sports or maybe.
- 22:48Because we are UK, like football, like that.
- 22:53But I want to see more rugby in the future.
- 22:56But that's good. We have concoction guidelines as well. We want to try a mix of everything.
- 23:03Badminton's also a lot of shoulder injury. that why I'm kind of like,
- 23:07it's like more variety of sport in the expo because it's going to be more like that.
- 23:13Maybe a sports theatre, maybe one of the theatres, okay, it's a different type of sports.
- 23:17It's third open. Anybody else feel
- 23:18they would have liked to see particular sports in there or do you think?
- 23:20Yeah, from previous years Matt, there was the
- 23:23likes of Liz Bailey there talking about dancers and dance injuries and that
- 23:26sort of stuff and I work with quite a lot of dancers and I was a dancer myself
- 23:29so a lot of my clients would be dancers just
- 23:32I suppose it's a natural progression for me being a dancer and so
- 23:35I always really enjoyed Liz's talks in the past and
- 23:38she wasn't there this year and I think Steph the Act would have
- 23:41been the closest to dance specific even though her talks were
- 23:44more around kind of hypermobility and hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome but
- 23:48it definitely would have been nicer to have some more specific to dance because
- 23:52like when we look at the research there's a lot in relation to ballet specifically
- 23:57but not other genres of dance so like you were saying it's some sort of a sports
- 24:01either that would maybe do kind of a couple of different sports,
- 24:03it would definitely help practitioners that are working within specific sports
- 24:07to kind of maybe go to one or two of those talks that match up with their client's help.
- 24:11Definitely the netball was tom astley
- 24:14wasn't it i think rightly yeah they just give tom a little shout
- 24:17out fantastic any other comments on sports specific danny
- 24:20would you like to see some combat sports when you're that's your neck of the woods would you
- 24:23like to have seen something specific to that or yeah i
- 24:26mean do you want to get away from that no absolutely i mean i don't think there
- 24:33was any martial arts this year at all i know in the past they i remember there
- 24:37was one about boxing but it was more about their kind of their progression in
- 24:41the sport rather than actually anything from a therapist point of view.
- 24:45So, yeah, absolutely. I totally agree. There should be more varieties of sports
- 24:49spoken. I love the idea of maybe having a theatre dedicated purely just to chatting
- 24:54about pros and cons of sports, things you're going to likely see in that sport.
- 25:00Something like that would be really, really helpful. How you would address it,
- 25:03what prehab maybe you could do.
- 25:04Like just a bit of life experience is always I really
- 25:07enjoy them sort of style of talks I do because
- 25:10I obviously run a business I do enjoy actually the business stuff
- 25:13as well I find it really like focuses my thoughts and try and gives me a bit
- 25:18of direction and and good things always come as well from from networking with
- 25:23those people as well they do give you some good ideas and then you can take
- 25:26it back so yeah yeah I I remember the the dancer ones last year and I And I
- 25:31absolutely love them, to be fair.
- 25:33And I often share the slides on my Instagram stories for my clients.
- 25:38And it doesn't matter really what sport they are.
- 25:40And they love it. They love looking at seeing what I do behind the scenes.
- 25:44And I've shared some of the slides.
- 25:46And especially the sport that they happen to do, they're like,
- 25:50oh, I didn't realize that. That's really cool.
- 25:52So, yeah, I think having a variety really helps reach a broader mind as well.
- 25:59Any other comments on particular sports that you would like to have seen or
- 26:02haven't been mentioned i mean rugby
- 26:05yeah i agree rugby wasn't there at all i don't think
- 26:08i i was lucky to go to another conference in birmingham
- 26:11the month before and they had loads of rugby in that one
- 26:14so maybe they all got like exhausted the month before
- 26:17but yeah obviously martial arts like even some
- 26:20winter sports would be nice to see you never
- 26:23see anything about the winter sports um you know
- 26:25skiing skating stuff like that like
- 26:28something a bit more obscure even like just
- 26:31that you wouldn't have naturally thought of would be would be
- 26:34wonderful to hear someone's experience in that and it might inspire someone
- 26:38who especially a student or
- 26:40something who's thinking of where they're going to go they don't always jump into
- 26:43the big sports or you know the top tier of football
- 26:46or rugby you know they might end up in a bit of a slightly odd sport or like
- 26:51I'm just throwing things out there but like a volleyball or something badminton
- 26:55which isn't necessarily as popular but that's sometimes the entry level that
- 26:58people have to go through and and usually end up loving to be fair so yeah it
- 27:03would be nice to see a variety and open horizons a little bit I think.
- 27:07Good idea. Well, what are you thinking of ways to develop it?
- 27:09I can't wait until the management listen to this.
- 27:12We will have a chat with them in about three or four weeks with Molly and Vern
- 27:15and Charlotte again, and they will appreciate all of this feedback.
- 27:19Anybody, slight university challenge, anybody on the bottom row,
- 27:22showing my age now, Nicky or Steve, anybody in particular sports that you'd like to see mentioned?
- 27:27Or do you think it's the place where they should be focusing on sports or Emily or?
- 27:31I think one of the issues I had was trying to get around to the various talks,
- 27:38you know, the timing of them, clashing, networking, catching up with people,
- 27:44you know, that kind of thing.
- 27:45It's just, it really is, it seems that really full on is two days.
- 27:51I actually came away saying, we need a third day.
- 27:55Then again, there's a cost and there's time off work, all that kind of thing.
- 27:59But, so as I was thinking about this, maybe they could video the talk and give
- 28:08us access to those videos afterwards.
- 28:12Yeah. I mean, some of them did overlap, didn't they?
- 28:16Yeah. That's talked about. They were recorded as long as people were speaking
- 28:19into the mic and, yeah, but, yeah, videos, I don't think they're doing yet.
- 28:23So apparently you could buy them, buy the videos. And I actually did.
- 28:27I tried to buy them, although there's been some issues with that.
- 28:30So that was going to be something I was going to say, like, it'd be nice to name a,
- 28:34what you mean if you paid for your ticket you get the video as well
- 28:37yeah yeah because at the end of the day you
- 28:40could technically go to everything but time-wise you
- 28:43couldn't i i thought if there was the the
- 28:46hip impingement one i know that like i really
- 28:49wanted to get to and i turned up like 10 15
- 28:52minutes before and the queue was massive and they already said
- 28:55they were like it's going to be full like you can't like go in but
- 28:59i thought they scanned our barcodes and they
- 29:01said that the presentation would be sent to us what the
- 29:04slides you should yeah but i haven't got anything
- 29:07i didn't know whether there was just going to be like a delay of getting them
- 29:11but that was kind of them reassuring us that don't worry we're going to scan
- 29:14your your barcode and then you'll get sent the the slides but we were kind of
- 29:19like we were like oh yeah okay and then it wasn't so we reflected we were like
- 29:23wait how's that gonna work if they've scanned it.
- 29:28I'm not too sure yeah that happened last year
- 29:31and i was told at one of the talks if we scan you you'll get
- 29:34the slides and the recording and i was like oh
- 29:36great no problem and then i got in contact with them a couple of
- 29:39weeks later and i got nothing and they were like oh you don't have the package to add
- 29:43the videos on and i was like but they're telling people at the
- 29:46doors of these theaters you're getting this stuff
- 29:48sent to you and you're just not so like i mentioned to
- 29:51mad actually just at the the last presentation when we
- 29:54were rounding things up if we could book a seat in
- 29:57the talks that we were really looking forward to so say if they released the
- 30:00timetable a couple of weeks beforehand and you know everybody favorites
- 30:03the ones that they want to go to and creates their little timetable if
- 30:07they could look at that and then say okay right well 100 people want to go to
- 30:10this hip impeachment that's to go into the biggest theater or maybe we need
- 30:14to put it on on both days so we need to kind of duplicate the timetable for
- 30:18the really popular runs to happen twice so that there's actually enough time
- 30:21and enough spaces for people to see the content that they want to see.
- 30:25Because like that, the tickets are expensive enough on their own.
- 30:27An extra £20 then for recordings.
- 30:30And like that, it might just be one talk that you want the recording of.
- 30:33In my case this year, there was two talks I didn't get to see.
- 30:36And I was like, it's £20 for an hour.
- 30:39Of two different recordings of something I didn't see. And like that,
- 30:42there might've been issues with a microphone or you might not see what they're actually doing.
- 30:45So that could be another implication. And I'm pretty sure the first year I went,
- 30:49there was talk of the videos being included.
- 30:52But again, I didn't receive them and there was some sort of technical error.
- 30:54And then they started adding on the cost for the videos.
- 30:58And I was kind of like, sure, I should have gotten them for free last year.
- 31:01Why would I pay for them again?
- 31:03Yeah, okay. That's giving you something to ask them about. There's a little
- 31:06bit of chatter in the live lounge here. Gary says, some talks run over time creating problems.
- 31:11Therapy Expo can only provide audio recordings due to limitations.
- 31:14Presentations usually take several weeks to be made available.
- 31:17Okay, so yeah, it does take a while for them to get through to you.
- 31:20Nikki has said, I think something we've commented on, you can buy a premium
- 31:24ticket, which includes recordings, and you can buy an upgrade for £20 to get
- 31:27the recordings. That's what you were saying, wasn't it, Shannon?
- 31:28I overheard that when I was at the next year's ticket desk.
- 31:32Indre has said, just bringing this up on the screen,
- 31:35mean we can still purchase recordings for 20 pound i've done it last year and
- 31:38i can still access the te 2023 library no videos just
- 31:40voice and slides yes i've purchased them
- 31:43for my ticket for next year but i didn't realize it was just audio which
- 31:46is kind of again another implication because what
- 31:49if it's quite practical and they're demonstrating something so say matt for
- 31:52your talk for example on the gate analysis we wouldn't have been able to see
- 31:56how you were applying anything we would have just heard your voice over yeah
- 32:00yeah yeah it wouldn't be as interesting The only thing I've got going for me
- 32:05is the visual. If you just get the audio, it's terrible.
- 32:09I've actually got my slides because I've photographed them. What?
- 32:12I've got your slides because I've photographed them. God, I've been talking
- 32:14to you. I've been talking to you and I'm finding you.
- 32:17Right, yeah. So, yes. I mean, there's a few things there which we need to raise
- 32:21with them. I mean, first of all, let's do an order.
- 32:24I don't want to get all negative. We will shine on a few other people which really stood out.
- 32:28But the, yeah, not getting into the theatre, this was something that was picked
- 32:32up on last year. It was the main feedback.
- 32:34We've come all this way. We've paid our tickets. Really, we want to see so-and-so.
- 32:38We couldn't get in, you know, and that is really kind of quite devastating.
- 32:42In the past they have kind of tried to do booking it and ordering it ahead and
- 32:46getting a reservation or something like that never kind of worked.
- 32:49Is that something that's always going to happen at conferences or do you think
- 32:52you've got, I mean, one solution might be getting the video,
- 32:54like you say that at least you can sit down in your own time and watch the video,
- 32:56but I guess there's always going to be cues for certain people and,
- 33:00It's just who's there first, isn't it? It's tricky. We did it as a group.
- 33:05We ended up like tag teaming it in a way. If we knew that like a low,
- 33:09you know, we were left with that with five of us.
- 33:11So yeah, if we saw something was busy or there was like talks at the same time,
- 33:16we were kind of like, okay, yeah, maybe you guys go and see if you can get into that one.
- 33:20We'll see if we can get into this one. And then obviously feedback.
- 33:23That was sort of our plan of action when we realized how busy the kids were.
- 33:28Yeah, it is a problem. so mine is pretty much the same
- 33:30as emily so we go there we went there as a group so
- 33:33we kind of spread out and then cute in different talks but
- 33:37i think the other idea is besides just
- 33:40send the recording or purchase for the recording might
- 33:43be give the live videos for the people who cannot actually
- 33:46get in and you can just walk like you say or if
- 33:50you might have like some like additional extra space
- 33:53like i'm not sure they might have speed at
- 33:56the back the kind of unused a little bit and you
- 33:58can just pop the space there for like people who
- 34:01cannot get in or have additional exer theater for
- 34:05the people like for for the talk that is really really famous
- 34:08for like hips or knees or shoulder that people
- 34:11line up for 20 minutes prior the talks and then
- 34:14cannot get in for like sit on the sit
- 34:17on the additional theater and then you can watch the
- 34:20life that actually happens there and i
- 34:24think and also one thing that i think is kind of like a
- 34:27little bit frustrating is i feel like when you have to queue it
- 34:30up into the theater you actually cause congestion
- 34:33in the front of the boots and then that kind of is really hard to see you know
- 34:38if you want to see that what happened in that boots and then you also oh what
- 34:42happened here why in the line of the soul so maybe have a wee space or area
- 34:46for queuing into the theater not exactly right in front of kind of like the
- 34:51boochers in front of the talks or the theatres.
- 34:53Like make it more like the layout and organisation space. For me,
- 34:57a little bit confusing at the times.
- 34:59Yeah, it did seem this year the queues were just going in front of all the exhibitor
- 35:03stores rather than previously when they were kind of along the wall.
- 35:06I think this year the layout was worse than in previous years.
- 35:08Like I remember being there, I think the last two times I was there,
- 35:11there was kind of space outside the theatre to enter that wasn't blocking other exhibitors.
- 35:16And I think that works better. Whereas this year it was kind of,
- 35:19you know, teeter A, teeter B.
- 35:20And then there was like a, it was on a slightly different level for teeter C.
- 35:23And it was kind of awkward to navigate it for the first kind of maybe hour or
- 35:28two. And then you're like, right now I know where I'm going.
- 35:30Whereas in previous years, it was a little bit clearer. And there was some things
- 35:33kind of hanging from the roof to show you exactly where to go.
- 35:36And although there was some of that this year, I felt like it was slightly less
- 35:38than in previous years, if that makes sense. I don't know if anyone else would
- 35:41agree, but it was definitely a little bit harder to navigate.
- 35:45Yeah. I mean, I've got the worst sense of direction in the world. I get lost.
- 35:49Anyone who watches me next year will realise I'm spending most of the time trying
- 35:52to find my way back to the SDA theatre, just following carpet colours and ending up miles away.
- 35:56So it's always difficult for me, but it's interesting how other people have problems as well.
- 36:00Let's just go into a positive. Let's go to Natalie.
- 36:04What's shone out for you? What did you really enjoy this year?
- 36:07That's me, right? Yeah, that's you, Natalie.
- 36:10Yeah well i mean it was my first time coming so i
- 36:13think the thing that i enjoyed most was just feeling
- 36:16like i was part of like the bigger picture and getting to
- 36:19go and like be amongst talks that
- 36:23were relevant to what i do and like a
- 36:25lot of the more specific stuff like injury based i was kind
- 36:28of more interested in the kind of bigger picture stuff like this talks about pain
- 36:31in general yeah so the the
- 36:34biggest thing for me was being able to just feel like get
- 36:37excited about being part of something bigger and yeah
- 36:42feel validated as a as a massage therapist that
- 36:45like it's sort of like yeah that's really
- 36:47interesting because there is that aspect it's not just the talks we
- 36:50always say this it's not just going to see the talks that is obviously part of
- 36:53it but it's that being with other people and that that's
- 36:56that you're also kind of paying for that really although it sounds weird but
- 36:59you're paying for meeting other people and what you talk about outside
- 37:02the theater can be just as useful kind of as being in there so that's
- 37:05nice to hear especially it's your first time so did you feel did
- 37:09you go with anybody i can't remember did you go with anyone else a couple
- 37:12of massage therapists okay so you weren't totally by yourself
- 37:15because that's something we've talked about as well what it's like for the person
- 37:17who's totally solo yeah we all split up like and did different things and were
- 37:21interested in different things but yeah it's okay you felt looked after and
- 37:26not too alone there i mean yeah there was really wasn't really time to to feel
- 37:30lonely because there's just so much to do you're just kind of like you know
- 37:33let's go see this go see that and then.
- 37:36Do you remember any particular speakers who stood out for you this is
- 37:39your chance to make them feel happy it's going out to 2 000 people yeah
- 37:42i really like the talk by oh no i can't remember what the
- 37:45tristan tristan attenborough yeah
- 37:49you'll love that well done by chris chris norris and
- 37:51the flipping pain one those were all really like great
- 37:54and i think relevant for like what i do great and some
- 37:57of the marketing stuff was really good as well h mdg and
- 38:01katie bell katie bell was massive yeah there
- 38:04was some really good bits of advice that actually like i was like oh actually do
- 38:07you know what like i need to i need to do that and i've actually gone and
- 38:10like like put them into action i've started
- 38:12i've started trying google ads i've never done that before so we'll see
- 38:15what happens i was thinking of doing facebook but like
- 38:18watching the hmdg felt maybe be like okay yeah maybe
- 38:21google google it is and like filling in faqs on
- 38:24google and putting more pictures of like the space on
- 38:27the website and then there was a booth clutch like
- 38:30that where you could like sign up for a free like website
- 38:33audit like that's really useful advice with that as well
- 38:36like what what to do on the back end like identified some problems with that
- 38:40like i'm not going to use their services because i'm like too small for it but
- 38:43he was still like oh yeah no but you can you can do this so yeah there was loads
- 38:47of like really things that i was surprised that i actually have taken away and
- 38:52have been able to like put into action so that was really cool i wasn't expecting.
- 38:57Wow, we really have gone positive now.
- 38:59We went soared out there. Screw the theatres we couldn't get into.
- 39:02After listening to that, Natalie, we all feel totally refreshed.
- 39:05Thank you. The movement Born to Move one as well. That was really cool.
- 39:10And the one about hypermobility and the one about the SMA talking about regulating
- 39:14mass action as a bigger picture question.
- 39:17So there was just lots of really interesting points of discussion that made
- 39:20me feel like, ah, there's stuff going on in my industry and I want to be part
- 39:25of it and I want to know what's going on and,
- 39:27So, yeah, it's exciting in all sense. Excellent stuff. What about,
- 39:31so you mentioned as well, and so did Cherie, about the business side of things.
- 39:35Did anybody else feel that there was a good representation for how to run your
- 39:38business as opposed to sort of more techniques and stuff?
- 39:41Did anybody else go to any of them? Nikki, you're nodding. What did you go to and enjoy?
- 39:46What, me? Yeah. Yeah, both I'm Nikki. I wasn't going by anyone else.
- 39:51I'm using the traditional system of just calling your name out. Yeah.
- 39:55I didn't go to any business stuff but I
- 39:58feel very business saturated all
- 40:03covered for me but and also
- 40:06you know being more of a specialist of the lower limb we learned
- 40:09from hip down so if there's anything to do with concussion
- 40:12then that's off my list and so it's quite nice last year
- 40:16I remember loads of things overlapping and I had the whole fear
- 40:19of missing out saying all the time and I didn't enjoy that
- 40:22but this year I've had like circled more
- 40:25all of mine were a bit more spread out and and so
- 40:28it didn't go into I normally find one of
- 40:31these things that you pay for the day and there's one talk that
- 40:34really really shines out and I'm really you're paying for
- 40:36that talk the one that really makes you change and and
- 40:40although I didn't quite manage it this time because I didn't make the
- 40:42two days unfortunately my mum had breast cancer and
- 40:45so I was with her for the Thursday so but I
- 40:48did pay for the 20 minute 20 pound like talks for
- 40:52the Thursday well for both days so hopefully that
- 40:56helps but of course then as a private practitioner you're then taking time out
- 40:59for the second that you wouldn't have necessarily needed to do did you find
- 41:04your one talk then were you gonna say did you find your one talk which made
- 41:07it all worthwhile I didn't happen in the end I wanted to come to no no um I
- 41:12wanted to come for your talk on the Thursday because although I.
- 41:16See, well, I mean, it's running and I have my treadmill.
- 41:19So although I see quite chronic problems, I'm not really seeing the acute situations
- 41:25that much in our clinic. And I suppose because I've been NHS beforehand,
- 41:29we don't see the acute straight away.
- 41:31They normally go and see A&E and I disagree sometimes with what A&E is to just, but not my forte.
- 41:37And so I'm really interested in the adults. I've.
- 41:42At the moment, I'm the elderly and I'm staying strong. So that was covered a
- 41:47little bit with one of the talks, which was quite nice.
- 41:50I don't just see elderly people. I mean, I had a nine-year-old and it was, yeah.
- 41:56And, you know, when I look at all of these talks' titles, I'm imagining what I might learn from it.
- 42:01And I'm imagining what the sorts of things that they might tell me.
- 42:05And then they don't always get to the nitty-gritty.
- 42:08And I really like it for script talk. i like to have like a
- 42:11little like an actual like be clear don't just
- 42:14go yes well we give them some exercises you know i like to say
- 42:17well what what do you give them how many do you give them like how
- 42:20how quickly do you yeah i like
- 42:22to know exactly where i stand because then as
- 42:25then when you're treating your patients you can feel confident just
- 42:28saying the right thing you're not like sure exactly do you
- 42:32work in a clinic do you work with just
- 42:34podiatrists or you know kind of a multidisciplinary setup in Worcester
- 42:38is there a few different disciplines there or um I am
- 42:41my own clinic I am just me and and
- 42:44then I have a spare room where the physio rents off me so there's
- 42:47okay so you're sharing patients
- 42:50with the physio are you referring I think I crashed yeah there's
- 42:53two of us we so she
- 42:56yeah she refers to me I refer to her with two separate businesses
- 42:59two mums working together powering on um yeah
- 43:02but it's really nice and it means that then our patients know
- 43:05us as individuals yeah and although maybe as our
- 43:08kids grow up we'll we'll we'll expand and employ more people but at the moment
- 43:12we're we're just on our own but together in it so we came together to therapy
- 43:17expo and i think this time i spent more time talking to the exhibitors than
- 43:21i had in the past and and i had some really great conversations with.
- 43:26Well, I was talking to Chris Downton at CT Medical Sale, and he sells the ENS
- 43:32dollar-class shockwave machine.
- 43:34And I always feel that the Venn shockwave, they're always, they have their own stream.
- 43:41And I think it's really one-sided. And I don't know whether it's very clear
- 43:45to everyone who doesn't have shockwave how there are different shockwaves out
- 43:49there, and they're not necessarily comparable.
- 43:53And there are some that don't just maintain the strength of the shockwave the higher you turn it
- 43:58doesn't really do exactly what it what you were hoping so
- 44:02um so i was just having a good chat with yeah so exhibitors i want to open up
- 44:06i wanted to mention exhibitors so as a podiatrist then you found the exhibitors
- 44:10there were useful for your needs other people in the room were the exhibitors
- 44:15useful to look around or were you mostly in the theatres or in the theater or in the Yeah,
- 44:19in the theatre series. Oh, I was at all day. Yeah.
- 44:23Yeah, pretty much in the theatre. Who else was with the exhibitors?
- 44:28D3 was always my favourite exhibitor from a supplier's point of view for tapes
- 44:33and heat rubs and rehab boxes and all of the stuff that they do.
- 44:36And they've got a really nice message and a really nice group of people.
- 44:39So I always enjoy going to D3.
- 44:41But I think this year I spent less time going to exhibitors and more times in the theatres.
- 44:45And I didn't really have much time on my schedule when I kind of figured out
- 44:49what talks I wanted to go to.
- 44:50So I don't know whether it'd be nice to have, you know, an hour of a lunch break
- 44:53where there's no talks on that people can actually network and go to exhibitors
- 44:57and maybe grab some food. I think on the Thursday was nearly three o'clock by
- 45:00the time I grabbed a coffee because I was running around from talk to talk.
- 45:05So although I didn't have enough time for exhibitors, it might be nice,
- 45:08maybe the first hour of the day or the last hour of the day or somewhere in
- 45:10the middle to give some time for people to actually do a little bit more networking
- 45:15and not feel like they're missing out on a talk,
- 45:18Good point. Emily, did you and your posse check out the exhibitors much at all?
- 45:24Yeah, I actually found it quite overwhelming. I think that was the first time I'd been.
- 45:29And yeah, and as well, being quite new to like a lot of the equipment that was
- 45:33like, you know, used in sort of private settings and things.
- 45:36I didn't feel like I was in a very good position to generally compare things.
- 45:40I found it all quite overwhelming. so I
- 45:43think I shied away and spent a lot of my time in the in
- 45:46the theatres but I did get some feedback from Isla that I will just sort of
- 45:50read out and because yeah she is the business owner and she said that she liked
- 45:55going round because she enjoyed being aware of like what investment can be made
- 46:00into the clinics so sort of like softwares and equipment so she found that really helpful.
- 46:06And she also did say as well she likes to see what sort of new new bits of kit
- 46:11are coming on onto the market and
- 46:13then especially being able to see that practically so yeah I think that's,
- 46:17better for the people that like obviously have experience and
- 46:20things of all the different types of equipment because then
- 46:23you can compare and just on
- 46:26sort of like the business and marketing side of things
- 46:29she says as well it gives him more ideas
- 46:32because that's things that you don't really get taught at university and things
- 46:35so she said a lot of like website setups and social
- 46:38media information she found that really helpful and actually just being able
- 46:42to talk to people you know there and then just getting like tips right away
- 46:47and sometimes you know them showing her on on her phone and things of you know
- 46:51things that she can do she found that quite yeah like rewarding and useful.
- 46:58That's cool. And that's the clinic owner bringing three of her staff with her
- 47:02to kind of benefit from the whole thing. So, yeah. Yeah.
- 47:05Very cool. Yeah. Gary's just mentioned it.
- 47:08The idea of a lunch break, I think, came up just pretty much around lunchtime
- 47:13when we realized no one had lunch.
- 47:15But it would be beneficial for so many reasons, I think. I think just to have
- 47:18a break and reflect and think about what you've taken in,
- 47:22because if you don't get that break, we all know that it doesn't really sink in
- 47:25unless you stop talk about it discuss it
- 47:28with somebody you just go straight on to the next one and it just doesn't stay that just
- 47:30disappears so and also i like your idea gary's mentioned
- 47:33that or because because plans for next year always have already
- 47:36started for 2025 the advisory board will be pulled together and
- 47:39i think one thing that we're already talking about and making suggestions of
- 47:42as gary says is a lunch break from talks to benefit the exhibitors so
- 47:46at the end of the day the exhibitors pay for it kind of
- 47:49you know they're the ones who are paying absolute fortune to be
- 47:52there so it's it's important that
- 47:55they do make money out of it otherwise we don't have that or
- 47:58i say we therapy expo closer still media don't have the money to put
- 48:00on all the uh to take the theaters out and all that sort of
- 48:03stuff so and there's a few more comments here i'm just
- 48:06going to read from people who are in the house let's have a little look
- 48:09indra talks about getting lost great i appreciate that indra it's not just me
- 48:13enjoy bigs up anything in the hands-on hub yeah that was very cool bonnie's
- 48:18hyper mobility ones bonnie southgate was love to see her back she's gonna be
- 48:21on the show i think we're gonna do yeah she's definitely been in the show uh
- 48:24james earl was great to be on the show again soon,
- 48:27paul coker emma hayes um nikki says i never got round the exhibitors so many talks to.
- 48:33Geek out at yes it's interesting with the exhibitors just see if there's some
- 48:39We didn't have Clare Minchel this time.
- 48:41There was no Clare Minchel this time, it's true. We didn't have Clare Minchel.
- 48:44No, there was a... Yeah, there was no Clare Minchel.
- 48:47And there was a few exhibitors who didn't go this year. And yeah,
- 48:49there's some discussions that have to be had.
- 48:50I think it's still just... The current Therapy Expo, although this was the 10th
- 48:55one, because COVID didn't happen, the current...
- 48:58Since covid it's been different management basically different organization same
- 49:02sort of people but different organized so they're still quite young in terms
- 49:05of sorting out seeing what works best and balancing the
- 49:08exhibitors and the speakers and everything so but yeah
- 49:11there was a few noticeable exceptions i noticed that the theaters seem to
- 49:14be some of them were just a bit empty some
- 49:17of them i've never seen it before some speakers reported back
- 49:20to me and said there are empty seats normally they're just full full
- 49:23so it's weird we've got some theaters where people can't
- 49:26get in we've got other theatres which are normally full and they're actually.
- 49:29With empty seats so i'm wondering i don't
- 49:32know how that happens i think it would be more interesting like
- 49:35say if there was like the app is obviously relatively new and
- 49:38we can all favorite what ones we like if they could
- 49:40maybe hold out to allocate time slots so
- 49:44say to either a is your biggest day then to either b then to
- 49:46either c and then if you've got talks that are going
- 49:49to be really really busy put them in the bigger theatres if you've
- 49:52got talks that less people are interested in put them in the smaller ones rather
- 49:54than having three theaters the exact same size and have
- 49:58some being empty and some with a waiting list of people to
- 50:00try getting in would it be more beneficial now obviously that
- 50:03requires people to have booked and then to actually
- 50:06open the email that said make sure you favorite your talks and
- 50:09all of that sort of stuff but it would be beneficial for the type
- 50:12a personalities like myself that like being organized that
- 50:15you could go on and reserve a seat so that
- 50:18when you get into the queue you can say well look i've gone on in advance
- 50:21three weeks ago or whatever it might be and I've booked to
- 50:24be in this talk because it's something I'm really interested in and maybe 20%
- 50:28or 30% of the seats for kind of people to come on the day don't book the whole
- 50:32thing out by people but like you know have maybe 50-60% of seats that are available
- 50:38to book online prior to the event and then the rest are kind of walk-ins to the the talk so that you.
- 50:45Kind of the expo chance to look and go okay well everybody wants
- 50:48to go to math talk everybody wants to go to Bilal's on
- 50:52ACLs everybody wants to go to Steph the Act everybody wants to
- 50:54go to Anna Maria so why don't we put those in the bigger
- 50:57theatres and then if there is something a little bit more niche like
- 51:00say for example the netball or like I was quite shocked with Bonnie's because
- 51:03Bonnie did one talk in the ST school and
- 51:06it was jam-packed there was people sitting on the floor there was people standing everywhere
- 51:09and she went straight from that talk into theatre B or
- 51:12theatre C and there was maybe 20 people there now it was the last talk of the
- 51:16day so we know people go home but I actually ran five minutes early from her
- 51:20talk at the ST school to queue up in the other theater because I was like if
- 51:23there's this many people here we're not all gonna fit into that theater so I
- 51:26left early and then I went in I was sitting down where has everybody gone.
- 51:31And the second talk was actually even more interesting than
- 51:34the first talk so I was like how did people decide to go to one
- 51:37and not the other and I don't know if she just caught people's attention as
- 51:40they were leaving but if there was a bit of an
- 51:43interest kind of thing that you could flag what ones and then they set the schedule
- 51:46to say okay rather than having these two really big talks at the same time we're
- 51:50going to separate them because everybody wants to go yeah that's some great
- 51:54suggestions there i wouldn't want their job behind to organize it if things
- 51:57clashing and it's very tricky isn't it it's very tricky but they still need
- 52:01to play around with a few things,
- 52:03definitely i mean had the open air theaters those people have been
- 52:06before did the open air kind of theatre thing they're taking the
- 52:09black screens down did that make any difference to the sound or anything
- 52:12or what did you find was it not so much
- 52:14the sound but I think the problem with those open style theatres for me is like
- 52:20if you are at the back you can't see like you know great if you manage to get
- 52:26to the front I was thinking actually whilst you guys were talking like it'd
- 52:29be really nice and I appreciate this is cost but like to have a big screen that.
- 52:35So when you're doing the demo for example I don't know I'm just using the gate
- 52:38analysis because it's to mind but you could even have a screen so it zooms on
- 52:42what you're seeing from the front so
- 52:44at the back can actually see it i think that'd be
- 52:47really great and then you could put that in the bigger theater as well
- 52:50because you couldn't put a demo thing in the theater because no one
- 52:52would be able to see it but if you had a because they have a
- 52:55massive projector like why not like have a
- 52:58camera and then the projection is actually good idea
- 53:01what's actually demoing would be great and then you'd fit
- 53:04more people into those really popular because i think the
- 53:06demo ones tend to be really popular as well people want
- 53:09to know what can they physically do yeah yeah and
- 53:13i think if you could have a camera on it that'd be great yeah it's good thinking
- 53:17yeah how about how about announcing when the talks are going to start you know
- 53:22five minutes to such a talk and such a theater or st school or whatever yeah
- 53:28because you get you're getting grossed in talking networking.
- 53:33Yeah it's tricky with sound isn't it i mean i thought i personally thought
- 53:35the app was quite good i think if you put an app into your favorites and a
- 53:38little reminder came up and said this is starting soon or
- 53:41something but again that's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea i was
- 53:44trying i didn't look like it people had told me but i was physically
- 53:47trying all day not to get my phone out my pocket as much as i normally do when
- 53:50i was it's because i was checking what's coming up and where am i supposed to
- 53:53be and blah blah blah but i did find that a lot of people are in that position
- 53:57now where they are trying to keep their phone away i'm not sure if an app is
- 53:59the best thing now i just got the impression maybe i was biased that and thankfully people are trying to
- 54:05use their phone less you know i don't know is am i
- 54:08by myself or were you guys sort of feeling that as well
- 54:10i don't want to be on my phone tweeting it once upon a while i would have been tweeting
- 54:13everything and now on and now on and now i think you know stick it
- 54:16away just watch what's happening in front of me man i
- 54:19think yeah absolutely and just enjoy what's happening and try and
- 54:22take it in i think the phones could be a distraction i did kind
- 54:25of favorite mine and i was getting the reminders and although they were useful half
- 54:29of the day i felt like my phone was vibrating in my pocket and i was like i
- 54:31know where i'm going i'd rather have the schedule in my hand in
- 54:34front of me and thread through it yeah i think
- 54:37so so i'm not sure how yeah whether the app is
- 54:40yeah as useful for that reason okay look gang
- 54:43we're actually oh we're running out of time we've gone a bit longer if that's
- 54:46okay with you if you need to disappear we'll go for another five minutes or
- 54:49so just because i want to hear if there's anything else you want to add we've
- 54:52gone over a few topics did anybody else have anything else they wanted to share
- 54:56in terms of good bad we've already talked about quite a lot of changes over
- 55:00to you guys what have you got.
- 55:02I really like the lymphedina drainage stuff.
- 55:05Hands-on it was a lymphedema hands-on
- 55:08hard Jane Week and that was fascinating that was
- 55:11yeah so exciting yes and she was saying that
- 55:14they now have just this year been able to inject some
- 55:17sort of dye and then they can see well and fizz and
- 55:20how they drain it and how they massive massage and yeah
- 55:24I thought that was really cool to see like you know only
- 55:26this year have we found out there and um yeah that
- 55:29was really really cool we had a good episode with Jane Jane's on
- 55:32the podcast and there's an episode with jane talking all about
- 55:35that i think about 20 ago and we'll get her back on it was very exciting
- 55:38because again someone like me who's been
- 55:41going on about evidence informed and you're not really improving circulation and
- 55:44now they've actually got some dye which shows how it is actually moving
- 55:47around with certain techniques it's like for people with compromised systems
- 55:51then it's um yeah it's it's nice to see it's good yeah it's
- 55:55like if you know what the ratio of different types of professions are like because
- 55:59i guess you know there'll be data about it like do you know how many it's a
- 56:03great question gary you listen to this i'm sure gary will come up with it now
- 56:06gary's in founder of the stas there he's been dropping bits and bombshells in
- 56:09there it's a cool one it was something which because it's sold as.
- 56:13Multidisciplinary it depends what lens you look through isn't it i i thought
- 56:17it was quite physio based this year but that's maybe because i was looking out
- 56:20for physio kind of stuff i think a lot of the stands seem to be physio centric
- 56:23but then again you can't i can't complain that much because when therapy expert
- 56:28first started, it was all massage based,
- 56:31but it was all kind of guns and cups and all sorts of kind of like...
- 56:35The attendees, do you know like what?
- 56:37I reckon we could find that out. Come on, Gary, let me down,
- 56:39man. It's got 10 seconds already.
- 56:41Yeah, it'd be interesting. They will have that information who represents what.
- 56:44We know there's at least one podiatrist there so far. I can tell you that.
- 56:47He's down here in the corner.
- 56:49But it's interesting. I mean, did you, what was your impression?
- 56:52Do you feel that it was multi-disciplinary or do you feel it
- 56:55was kind of overburdened with one particular professional or
- 56:58I thought it was better this year than last year
- 57:01last year I felt like every stand was like shockwave
- 57:05it was really really heavy of
- 57:07the corporate side of things and this year
- 57:10I felt like that that was there you
- 57:14still had the big big boys and stands but I did
- 57:17I did feel that it was a lot more smaller stuff a lot
- 57:19more niche like I'm really big into sports science
- 57:23and I'm bits and pieces for that so yeah I really liked being able to see like
- 57:27new tech and innovation like for me like even new gadgets and things I might
- 57:32not ever use them but I quite like seeing what's going to be like the new sexy
- 57:36topic for the future and and stuff like that I think that's really really helpful for me.
- 57:42Yeah that was nice gary palmer i know you trained with
- 57:45me up there he had loads of little gadgets didn't he oh he's so
- 57:48cool he's cool he's a good
- 57:51dude we like gary yeah anti-gravity treadmill as well yeah i want to highlight
- 57:58one point sorry sorry sorry first okay so i just want to highlight One thing
- 58:06that I liked about the Expo, like the concept,
- 58:09so I find like the talks,
- 58:11I mentioned all the talks that I love, like ATL, shoulder injuries.
- 58:16TikTok efficiencies, flipping pain is a really nice one as well.
- 58:20But I think one thing that I got delivered from the speaker is we look at the patients as a human.
- 58:28So basically there's many talks that try to engage not just physio-wise,
- 58:33physiology things pathologies but we're looking
- 58:36more like nutrition there's also
- 58:39one wonderful talk from i think steven's about
- 58:42sleepings like how could you help patients sleep
- 58:45better which is really good and also
- 58:48i went to the the talks from tim about
- 58:50shoulder injury he also like how you know work with
- 58:53you know agency coach you know dietitians nutritionists
- 58:58and also ankle injury in netball and
- 59:01i think it's a tim stevenson and thomas he also
- 59:04talked about you know he gave a he gave example
- 59:07of lovely case studies about the lady that got kind of like don't enough don't
- 59:12have enough sleep what the food they eat vitamin d how about the sons so kind
- 59:17of like this talk this year helped me to you know have a bigger picture of one
- 59:23people we don't look them as a you know,
- 59:25clients or just a patient, but we need to go like around the.
- 59:30Or any like i would say factor that
- 59:33could be involved in one patient so we might not just look as
- 59:36a physio perspective or therapist perspective that why
- 59:39you not get better why you not get better do you do the exercises do
- 59:43you do this that or whatever how about your life
- 59:46let's talk this is i i find this most of the speaker this year they try to point
- 59:52out this which is really good and i find this and i feel like him as a therapist
- 59:58not just a physio but every therapist that go there going to get something from
- 1:00:03this point and it's really helpful,
- 1:00:05for the treatment as well in the future that's cool
- 1:00:08good feedback if that was a message you got then i think that's quite good that's
- 1:00:11where healthcare supposed to be going and that's that's actually the idea of
- 1:00:14multidisciplinary because as soon as you look at the individual you realize
- 1:00:16that your profession and you personally might not be the best person for this
- 1:00:19this particular individual which is where the idea of us walking together working
- 1:00:23together and you might be better with that person or that person so patient-centered
- 1:00:26care sorry nikki you were going
- 1:00:27to say what are you going to say well on that note
- 1:00:30then i think it'll be really interesting to have more nutrition talks as well
- 1:00:34um but that would be another another idea um yeah last year so tricky last year
- 1:00:39we had at least two we had at least two nutritionists talking about microbiome
- 1:00:44we had talking about relationship we had disordered eating and all sorts of stuff yeah,
- 1:00:50it's funny isn't it it's so tricky um well i'll make yeah the microbiome one i think i went to.
- 1:00:56And the other thing i was going to say was the motix guy
- 1:00:59there was a motix um stan and one of the exhibitors
- 1:01:02and he's amazing because he's developed this
- 1:01:05way of record keeping where you you can have it open on
- 1:01:08your desk and then you can be treating the patients and it takes
- 1:01:11all of the notes for you in soap order
- 1:01:14and he's amazing yeah we're gonna have him on the show he was
- 1:01:16next to the sj theater yeah yeah he grabbed me he grabbed me and said mate come
- 1:01:21and we've got to talked to you an australian or new zealand guy i think it was
- 1:01:23yeah yeah he's he's going to come on the show that sounded very exciting very
- 1:01:26interesting i don't think he's australian he's from um london this guy and he's
- 1:01:31uh i think he's a seek he has one of these things on his head.
- 1:01:36I'll send you the information excellent yeah
- 1:01:39i know that's one of the best things for me of going to therapy experts i get to find
- 1:01:42new you know relevant people and be on the podcast to keep it all
- 1:01:45fresh so fantastic anybody else want
- 1:01:47to add something before we close up this is your chance to let celebrate particular
- 1:01:53talk or reader or a speaker or something you're good okay well there we go people
- 1:01:59just checking the people in the live lounge here uh gary says we get data on
- 1:02:04professions registered in the sta theater i mean every talk,
- 1:02:08that happened in the STA theatre that I was hosting. I did kind of,
- 1:02:11well, not everyone, but I tried to start off seeing what professions were there.
- 1:02:14And there was a nice mixture. And I love seeing that because for me,
- 1:02:17patient-centred care is us all getting together.
- 1:02:18And I love the fact we've got people here tonight. And it hasn't been that different, the feedback.
- 1:02:23We've got physios, we've got podiatrists, we've got sports therapists,
- 1:02:26sports master's therapists.
- 1:02:27It's all kind of been singing from the same hymn sheet, which is what it kind
- 1:02:30of should be if we really put the patient first.
- 1:02:33So Gary says, I will get all the delicate data in due course.
- 1:02:36We will say that probably in the podcast. We'll let people know in the follow-up.
- 1:02:42Indra says, I think it was more multidisciplinary than last year.
- 1:02:45Defo more hands on stuff. And it does depend who you were hanging about with.
- 1:02:48As a soft tissue therapist, I normally feel intimidated by physios.
- 1:02:51But see, Emily Sweet, you're so intimidating. But it was less of that this year, I think.
- 1:02:56This is useful as well because, okay, people listen to the podcast, you can't see.
- 1:03:00But we've got physios here and they're not as intimidating as the word kind
- 1:03:04of encapsulates or kind of suggests.
- 1:03:05They're actually just normal human beings most of them so that's
- 1:03:08helpful as well because we do all suffer from imposter syndrome and whatever
- 1:03:11professions we are we think the person up there whether it's a surgeon or something
- 1:03:14is better than us or knows this and we don't know it and at
- 1:03:17the end of the day we realize you can't know everything it's ridiculous just specialize in
- 1:03:20what you know and you're good at and refer out patient out to other
- 1:03:23people so that's good injury it's nice you've got
- 1:03:25that sensation that you don't feel as threatened because that's that's a
- 1:03:28that can be a wall to climb getting over that
- 1:03:31particularly for soft tissue therapists gary benson says i wonder why
- 1:03:34more membership bodies don't attend it's a great place to showcase how we support our
- 1:03:37members this is true gary i'm sure we will talk about that further in
- 1:03:40our own reflection it would be great maybe as well matt to add
- 1:03:43in like i don't know a student prize and go to you know
- 1:03:46universities that maybe have student physiotherapists or student sports therapists
- 1:03:50because i actually mentioned to my they were second years last year their final
- 1:03:54years this year and i missed one of their lectures last year when i came back
- 1:03:57they were like why are you not here on tuesday i was like oh is that therapy
- 1:04:00excellent they were asking what it was and i actually bumped into three of my
- 1:04:03final year students at Therapy Expo this year,
- 1:04:04which is quite nice to see that they actually listened to me when I saw them.
- 1:04:08But it was quite nice to see them because they're,
- 1:04:11output of or their aim of going to Therapy Expo was
- 1:04:14to chat to some exhibitors and go to some talks to try
- 1:04:17and come up with their dissertation topics for their
- 1:04:21thesis and look at the research that's coming out and
- 1:04:23what the new hot topics is and all of that sort of stuff which is really really
- 1:04:26beneficial so I think I'm going to try bringing them on a school trip next year
- 1:04:29and bring a group of them over which
- 1:04:32would be really really nice but I was wondering while we were there how
- 1:04:35many student therapists are actually there whether it be physiotherapists or
- 1:04:38sports therapists because I didn't I don't know maybe they were there and we
- 1:04:42just don't notice but I feel like it would be really beneficial for them to
- 1:04:45be a part of this kind of multidisciplinary approach rather than feeling like
- 1:04:48a new grad that's just out in the wild if that makes sense like our Emily.
- 1:04:53Recently graduated aren't you Emily yeah no I've
- 1:04:56been I've been graduating now for three years but it
- 1:04:59was my first time yeah coming to therapy but you're
- 1:05:03new at the Isla clinic we're working out now aren't you yeah yeah
- 1:05:06literally just my first week with her in the thing
- 1:05:10yeah which is fine right then we need to
- 1:05:12wrap this up people because i'm sure you've got better things to do gary says
- 1:05:16there is a student rate i believe but we will ask
- 1:05:19that to the organizers when we catch up in a few weeks time it makes
- 1:05:22perfect sense it wouldn't be too hard to do with it within a .ac.uk account
- 1:05:25or whatever it is the equivalent in ireland but yeah that
- 1:05:27should be something we should think about definitely just to
- 1:05:30make it more accessible right who's gone black on me
- 1:05:33that is nikki has gone all screen black just you know nikki thank
- 1:05:36you people thank you so much it's really so nice to hear from different
- 1:05:40professions but then realize it's all very similar as well
- 1:05:43which i think is how it's supposed to be i think that's the idea so thank
