- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened? Everybody? Welcome into another edition of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: check O Daily.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethbirds dot Com.
- 0:19Speaker 2: And Today, Friday, if you're listening, was the second practice
- 0:23Speaker 2: that the Eagles had. They have one more tomorrow ahead
- 0:26Speaker 2: of Monday night football with Eagles Chargers at SOFI Stadium.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And we'll get through the injury report today and then
- 0:34Speaker 2: we'll kind of talk through some matchups that I like
- 0:36Speaker 2: or that are intriguing to me. But the injury report
- 0:40Speaker 2: begins with not practicing. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, shoulders, guard
- 0:45Speaker 2: Landon Dickerson, rest, tackle Lane Johnson foot limited again, Linebacker's
- 0:52Speaker 2: Act Bond hand, wide receiver Johan Dotson tow and outside
- 0:56Speaker 2: linebacker Jalen Phillips concussion, full safety Marcus Epps shoulder, wide
- 1:02Speaker 2: receiver Xavier Gibson shoulder, and tackle Miles Hinton back. So
- 1:09Speaker 2: we get to practice, and I like to always set
- 1:12Speaker 2: the scene to today. The second practice of the week
- 1:15Speaker 2: is when we get to see warm ups and individuals,
- 1:19Speaker 2: and so the players are warming up on a far
- 1:22Speaker 2: field and then they break up into groups normally that
- 1:26Speaker 2: close field to the gate is. You know, it's divided
- 1:30Speaker 2: between punt returners and the two corners who are going
- 1:34Speaker 2: to be starting normally, and that's a Dori Jackson and
- 1:37Speaker 2: Quinjon Mitchell, and defensive backs coach Christian Parker. He works
- 1:41Speaker 2: them through some drills and sometimes you'll see another player,
- 1:45Speaker 2: whether it's Brandon Johnson who's on the practice squad, who
- 1:48Speaker 2: will work in the mix. But today it was Quinyon
- 1:50Speaker 2: and Ady working with Christian, and then some of the
- 1:55Speaker 2: punt returners got some work in on the tail end
- 1:58Speaker 2: of that field. But right when you walk in, it
- 2:01Speaker 2: was quarterbacks today, so we got to see Jayalen Hurts,
- 2:04Speaker 2: Tanner McKee, Sam Howe, and Kyle McCord go through drills
- 2:09Speaker 2: with quarterbacks coach Scott Leffler throwing the football round, warming
- 2:13Speaker 2: up and going through their routine.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So that was cool to see. Normally we don't get
- 2:16Speaker 1: a chance to that.
- 2:17Speaker 2: They're on a separate field and we normally get to
- 2:19Speaker 2: see what I just outlined, But then on the on
- 2:24Speaker 2: another field that's adjacent to that one is where the
- 2:27Speaker 2: offensive lineman go to work. They worked on a far field,
- 2:30Speaker 2: the one I guess the third field over and what
- 2:36Speaker 2: we noticed is that Landon Dickerson was not there, And
- 2:39Speaker 2: it was curious, of course, because he wasn't on the
- 2:41Speaker 2: injury report yesterday and he spoke yesterday, so it seemed
- 2:46Speaker 2: like it was gonna either be personal or rest. And
- 2:47Speaker 2: it turns out that it was rest and in Landon
- 2:50Speaker 2: Dickerson's place, Brett Toath handled the left guard. Reps with
- 2:55Speaker 2: that with the first team, So you know, I mean,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you look at the report and I think you have
- 3:01Speaker 2: to feel pretty.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Good with where the Eagles are at now.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It looks like it's gonna be another week without Lane Johnson.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Not really a surprise there. Fred Johnson in line to
- 3:09Speaker 2: get another start there at right tackle, and.
- 3:14Speaker 1: We'll obviously see about the others.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I believe we're gonna hear from Marcus Epps for some
- 3:19Speaker 2: of his perspective coming back from the injury and.
- 3:22Speaker 1: All of that on Saturday.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean, it's a it's a week in
- 3:28Speaker 2: which I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Eagles
- 3:32Speaker 2: respond in this game. I think that when you look
- 3:35Speaker 2: at when you look at the matchups and Justin Herbert's
- 3:38Speaker 2: banged up, you know, it's it's not a It's not
- 3:41Speaker 2: going to be an easy game for him if he's
- 3:43Speaker 2: even able to go with that banged up hand. Now
- 3:46Speaker 2: it's not his throwing hand, but you have to worry
- 3:48Speaker 2: about ball security and they're gonna have to do a
- 3:51Speaker 2: lot of pistol and shotgun as a result, and not
- 3:54Speaker 2: as much, you know, under center, and so I think
- 3:57Speaker 2: that that really favors the Eagles there, even without Jalen Carter.
- 4:01Speaker 2: But you know, we heard from Jordan Davis today, we
- 4:05Speaker 2: heard from Jahad Campbell, and.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I was talking to will Shipley.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I always like to talk to him throughout the week
- 4:15Speaker 2: and kind of get a sense for We just talk
- 4:17Speaker 2: about everything, and he gave me a you know, a
- 4:20Speaker 2: show recommendation for this long flight severance. I'm not sure
- 4:23Speaker 2: if any of you have seen it, and I'm more
- 4:26Speaker 2: than willing to take any request because it's quite a
- 4:29Speaker 2: long flight. I also spoke to defensive tackle Ty Robinson
- 4:33Speaker 2: and Byron Young, both of which are going to now
- 4:35Speaker 2: have to take on larger roles in the absence of
- 4:38Speaker 2: Jalen Carter. So it's going to be a really interesting
- 4:41Speaker 2: game to see how some of these players Moro Jomo
- 4:43Speaker 2: and Jordan Davis as well are able to kind of
- 4:46Speaker 2: band together and assume which is you know, Jalen Carter
- 4:50Speaker 2: takes on the Lion's share of the snaps, but I'm
- 4:53Speaker 2: curious to see how some of these younger players are
- 4:55Speaker 2: able to acquit themselves and an opportunity that I think
- 4:57Speaker 2: favors them because the Chargers have a banged up offensive line,
- 5:01Speaker 2: two backup tackles. I talked about the interior Bradley Boseman.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Their center is solid, but Mackai Beckton, as I mentioned,
- 5:08Speaker 2: hasn't played well this season, and I think that there
- 5:12Speaker 2: should be some opportunities for the Eagles to generate some
- 5:15Speaker 2: interior pressure, which would be really daunting for someone like
- 5:19Speaker 2: Justin Herbert with the injury that he's dealing with. But
- 5:22Speaker 2: let's talk about some of the matchups that I really
- 5:24Speaker 2: like in this game, and we'll start with the edge
- 5:28Speaker 2: rusher group. Now I mentioned that the Chargers have two
- 5:32Speaker 2: backup tackles. Jaylex Hunt's playing at a high level. Nolan
- 5:36Speaker 2: Smith is generating some pressure and very violent and setting
- 5:39Speaker 2: the edge. We'll see about Jay when Phillips he was
- 5:41Speaker 2: limited again with a concussion. But I think that group
- 5:44Speaker 2: right there should be able to thrive against a couple
- 5:49Speaker 2: of reserve tackles there, and again that also complicates, excuse me,
- 5:56Speaker 2: complicates things for Justin Herbert now that I had circled
- 6:02Speaker 2: throughout the season, and I'm really looking forward to seeing
- 6:04Speaker 2: if we get a chance to see it really play
- 6:07Speaker 2: out with you know, with if Justin Herbert is able
- 6:10Speaker 2: to throw the football, and that is Lad McConkie their
- 6:13Speaker 2: wide receiver versus Cooper Degene in the in the slot there,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and Lad McConkie is a really good route runner, He's savvy,
- 6:21Speaker 2: he's good at finding the saw spots in zone and
- 6:25Speaker 2: that's a good it's a good challenge for degene. And
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think that you like Cooper's physicality and ability to
- 6:33Speaker 2: combat that short area quickness and savviness that McConkie has
- 6:37Speaker 2: with his own football intelligence because I think Cooper is
- 6:41Speaker 2: arguably the best nickel defender in the NFL. So that's
- 6:45Speaker 2: something that I will certainly be keeping an eye on.
- 6:47Speaker 2: How about the outside wide receivers versus Dory Jackson and
- 6:51Speaker 2: Quinya Mitchell, because I look at whether it's Quinton Johnson
- 6:56Speaker 2: who's come on a little bit. I think he has
- 6:58Speaker 2: seven touchdowns on the season, He's having sort of an
- 7:00Speaker 2: emerging type of season, and then you have Keenan Allen,
- 7:03Speaker 2: who is still one of the.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Best route runners in the NFL. And I believe that.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Quinyon will be able to handle his match up, of course,
- 7:13Speaker 2: but I'm curious to see how a Doorri will fare
- 7:17Speaker 2: because I have to think that if Justin Herbert's able
- 7:19Speaker 2: to get the ball off in time and is not pressured,
- 7:23Speaker 2: which I have a hard time envisioning because of the circumstances,
- 7:27Speaker 2: that I want to see what a Dory's going to
- 7:29Speaker 2: do because I do believe he would be targeted. Adri's
- 7:32Speaker 2: handled himself well, as I've outlined on this podcast, whether
- 7:36Speaker 2: it's rising up to the challenge, not hanging his head
- 7:40Speaker 2: when things don't go his way. He's a veteran and
- 7:43Speaker 2: as Vic Vangio has said, he's a survivor. What I
- 7:46Speaker 2: am really enamored with is the psyche of a cornerback,
- 7:50Speaker 2: because I would argue that that's the toughest position to
- 7:53Speaker 2: play in the NFL, and it requires a certain mindset,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and a Dori has that. It's the have to have
- 8:00Speaker 2: a short mindset, a short memory, I should say, good player,
- 8:04Speaker 2: bad line it back up and not necessarily dwell on
- 8:07Speaker 2: the previous play, and that's something that I feel you
- 8:11Speaker 2: have to have an art for. You have to you
- 8:14Speaker 2: have to really be able to compartmentalize things. And I actually,
- 8:19Speaker 2: oddly enough recall a really interesting conversation that I had
- 8:23Speaker 2: with James Bradberry. It was two years ago when the
- 8:26Speaker 2: Eagles played the Rams and talking about what it takes
- 8:29Speaker 2: to have a short memory and how critical it is
- 8:32Speaker 2: to play that position at a high level.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family

- 11:22Speaker 1: Now.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I am also going to be looking at from the
- 11:26Speaker 2: Eagles offensive perspective?
- 11:28Speaker 1: Are they going to be able.
- 11:28Speaker 2: To generate a running game, and I have to think
- 11:32Speaker 2: you might see some variants in terms of obviously Saquon
- 11:35Speaker 2: Barkley's going to have the lion's share of the touches,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but I am wondering whether or not you're going to
- 11:41Speaker 2: see more Tank Bigsby and some Will Shipley mixed in
- 11:44Speaker 2: because both players, as I've outlined, provide something different. There's
- 11:48Speaker 2: no denying that Tank Bigsby provides a spark whenever he's
- 11:51Speaker 2: in there, and Will is probably the eagles best pass
- 11:54Speaker 2: protecting running back and their best pass catcher. So I
- 11:59Speaker 2: would have to think that if you're trying to find
- 12:01Speaker 2: a way to freshen up the offense, and you're going
- 12:04Speaker 2: to really lean into your convictions and Nick Sirianni hasn't
- 12:08Speaker 2: shied away from that. Well, there's only a few different
- 12:11Speaker 2: alterations that you can make at this stage of the season,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and that is working different players into the mix. So
- 12:18Speaker 2: I'm curious to see if those players get that opportunity.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And these are going to be optimal conditions. So it's
- 12:23Speaker 2: imperative that Jalen Hurts is able to get things going
- 12:26Speaker 2: from a passing game perspective, and also running the football,
- 12:29Speaker 2: because that's something that has been a prominent talking point
- 12:33Speaker 2: of late. He hasn't run the football as much as
- 12:35Speaker 2: he normally does, and I think a game like this,
- 12:38Speaker 2: when you're trying to generate some momentum offensively, Jalen Hurts
- 12:41Speaker 2: is lethal with his legs.
- 12:43Speaker 1: He's proven that over his career, and I think that the.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Dallas game, that first Dallas game, when they really were
- 12:49Speaker 2: stuck in neutral for a lot of that game offensively,
- 12:52Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts his legs pride them out of that hole
- 12:55Speaker 2: and was able to keep things moving forward from an
- 12:58Speaker 2: offensive standpoint. So also, I'm looking to see Jalen Hurts
- 13:02Speaker 2: create yards with his legs and try to open up
- 13:05Speaker 2: another fast of the offense, because let's not lose sight
- 13:07Speaker 2: of the fact that when he is running the football,
- 13:11Speaker 2: and I mean, he's that plus one in the running game,
- 13:13Speaker 2: and it opens things up for someone like say Kwon Barkley,
- 13:16Speaker 2: And I think that's going to be really important to
- 13:18Speaker 2: tap into at this stage of the season when you're
- 13:21Speaker 2: trying to find ways to sustain drives and keep the
- 13:25Speaker 2: offense on schedule. So that's something that Jalen Hurts has
- 13:28Speaker 2: been very effective at doing and then when it comes
- 13:31Speaker 2: to the passing game for Kevin Patulo, I think the
- 13:35Speaker 2: key here and this is such a critical game. This
- 13:37Speaker 2: is a measuring stick game, and as you get later
- 13:39Speaker 2: in the season, there's not as many of these games.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Find a way to get Jalen Hurts in the flow
- 13:44Speaker 2: of the game, whether that's getting those short completions to
- 13:47Speaker 2: a running back or probably more conceivably, getting the ball
- 13:51Speaker 2: to Dallas Goddard even on those short passes, because Dallas
- 13:54Speaker 2: Goddard is exceptional after the catch. Him and Jalen have
- 13:58Speaker 2: and unmistakable report that's been evident dating back to training
- 14:02Speaker 2: camp in previous seasons as well. So I think Dallas
- 14:05Speaker 2: Goddter is going to be a big key here in
- 14:07Speaker 2: getting things rowing and also allowing jaywhen Hurst to settle
- 14:10Speaker 2: into the flow of the game. And I think with Jalen,
- 14:13Speaker 2: what I've noticed is when he is able to get
- 14:14Speaker 2: into the flow of the game, that's when you're able
- 14:17Speaker 2: to see him open things up throughout the game, and
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think it sets the tone more or less for
- 14:22Speaker 2: the offense as a whole. AJ Brown and DeVante Smith
- 14:28Speaker 2: that this game should be another one where they're both
- 14:31Speaker 2: able to find some success because I do believe that
- 14:35Speaker 2: their corners are beatable. Now they do have a good defense.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I don't want to sure change the Chargers by any means.
- 14:41Speaker 2: They're a top five defense, but with aj and DeVante
- 14:44Speaker 2: they prevent they present some challenging matchups for corners, and
- 14:50Speaker 2: I look at what the Chargers have there, and to me,
- 14:54Speaker 2: it suggests that they should be able to get things
- 14:56Speaker 2: rowing there. I'm not sure what this game is going
- 14:58Speaker 2: to hold, but I can tell you that the messaging
- 15:00Speaker 2: has been consistent.
- 15:02Speaker 1: There's no finger pointing, there's no shying away.
- 15:06Speaker 2: From who they are or what they are, and it's
- 15:10Speaker 2: more so just kind of banding together and getting the
- 15:12Speaker 2: getting this thing rolling. And there's some pressure lifted from
- 15:17Speaker 2: this a little bit, ever so slightly because of the
- 15:20Speaker 2: way that the Cowboys game Cowboys versus the Lions game went.
- 15:24Speaker 1: The Cowboys dropped that game.
- 15:26Speaker 2: And their season is pretty much dead in the water
- 15:28Speaker 2: barring a miracle. And the Detroit Lions, by the way,
- 15:32Speaker 2: look pretty effective offensively moving the football at will against
- 15:35Speaker 2: that Cowboys defense.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Particularly between the numbers.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I thought Jared GoF was surgical and moving the football
- 15:41Speaker 2: mom ros Saint Brown ended up playing in that game.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Jameson Williams was a big factor in that one. So
- 15:47Speaker 2: keep an eye on the Lions. They're not they're not out.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Of it just yet.
- 15:49Speaker 2: And if they do squeak into the playoffs, and I'm
- 15:51Speaker 2: not sure about all the different scenarios, I'm not there yet.
- 15:55Speaker 2: They could they could, you know, cause some you know,
- 15:58Speaker 2: cause some chaos there and be problematic for certain teams.
- 16:01Speaker 2: But I think that there's a little bit of pressure
- 16:05Speaker 2: lifted from this game in particular. But from an Eagles standpoint,
- 16:10Speaker 2: they got to go out there and they have to
- 16:11Speaker 2: take care of business because the weather's not going to
- 16:15Speaker 2: be a factor obviously in beautiful Sofi Stadium, and I
- 16:19Speaker 2: think that it's setting up for, I don't want to
- 16:21Speaker 2: say an offensive showcase, but I do believe that you're
- 16:26Speaker 2: going to see them tap into an offense that's sort
- 16:28Speaker 2: of reminiscent or more closely reminiscent to the one that
- 16:31Speaker 2: we saw against the Minnesota Vikings. I just think that
- 16:34Speaker 2: there's going to be opportunities based off what the defense presents,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and I do believe that the running game could get going.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I Jordan Myiltta says that they have some different things
- 16:44Speaker 2: planned for the running game.
- 16:45Speaker 1: He alluded to that when he spoke on Thursday.
- 16:49Speaker 2: And we haven't heard from Saquon Barkley yet, but I
- 16:53Speaker 2: have to think that.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean, he's never I mean, he's been very.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Confident in the you know, the prospects of the run
- 17:00Speaker 2: game and getting things going, and he's never deterred or
- 17:03Speaker 2: wavered from that.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So I think this Saquon Barkley's going to get things
- 17:07Speaker 1: going this week. It's just the sense that I have.
- 17:09Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean I'm looking forward to covering this
- 17:12Speaker 2: game from Los Angeles. I fly out Sunday, and again,
- 17:15Speaker 2: if you have any recommendations, please send them my way. Also,
- 17:19Speaker 2: Britain Covey returns to a place that he was there briefly,
- 17:24Speaker 2: but you know, he knows Sofi Stadium very well. He
- 17:26Speaker 2: was with the Rams for preseason and the off season
- 17:31Speaker 2: and all of that, and he was the Eagles punt
- 17:33Speaker 2: returner when they were there in twenty three and twenty four.
- 17:36Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean we were kind of talking a
- 17:38Speaker 2: little bit about the the just the stadium itself and
- 17:43Speaker 2: the different challenges.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You know, JK.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Scott is a good punter and they don't create he doesn't.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Typically the way that he kicks doesn't generate a lot
- 17:52Speaker 2: of production from a punt returner standpoint, but if there's
- 17:55Speaker 2: anyone who can muster out a few yards, it's going
