- 0:00Speaker 1: And she's very punctual. Right to your live. Oh, Olivia
- 0:04Speaker 1: Rodrigo joining us in the studio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Rare to see you again, Ryan, thanks for having me.
- 0:10Speaker 3: And fresh off at Coachella cameo.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it was so fun.
- 0:14Speaker 3: So Addison Ray on stage, you come out.
- 0:16Speaker 1: What is the moment like when you know what's about
- 0:19Speaker 1: to happen but nobody else knows what's about to happen
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the five four three two go moment?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I was really nervous.
- 0:25Speaker 4: I was.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I was very honored to be on stage with her.
- 0:27Speaker 4: I think her show is so incredible and she puts
- 0:28Speaker 4: on such a wonderful performance. So yeah, I just I
- 0:31Speaker 4: just wanted to do her proud. And that was just
- 0:33Speaker 4: what was kind of going on in my head.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So what is it about Coachella that makes every artist
- 0:39Speaker 1: want to do something really special and an artist that
- 0:42Speaker 1: could be a headline or do something like what you did?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. It's just really fun. It's like
- 0:47Speaker 2: in my backyard.
- 0:48Speaker 4: I'm born and raised in La and so it's like
- 0:50Speaker 4: all your friends are in the audience and you're like,
- 0:52Speaker 4: I just want to do something fun with my friends,
- 0:54Speaker 4: and people always bring their a game.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So yeah, it's a very fun, fun type of festival.
- 1:00Speaker 1: So when you think about this album and we don't
- 1:04Speaker 1: know everything about it yet, you seem pretty sad for
- 1:07Speaker 1: a girl so in love? Is this something like? What's
- 1:09Speaker 1: symbolic about that? What does that mean to you? Yeah?
- 1:12Speaker 4: I mean I started writing this album at a time
- 1:15Speaker 4: in my life where I was like experiencing real romantic
- 1:17Speaker 4: love for the first time, and so I was tasked
- 1:19Speaker 4: with writing an album full of love songs. And I
- 1:21Speaker 4: went back and I kind of listened to all of
- 1:23Speaker 4: my favorite love songs throughout history or throughout you know whatever,
- 1:26Speaker 4: my Spotify playlist that I love, and I realized that
- 1:31Speaker 4: the thing that I loved so much about them is
- 1:32Speaker 4: not that they were really happy, but they had sort
- 1:34Speaker 4: of an element of sadness or fear or melancholy or longing,
- 1:38Speaker 4: and that's what kind of made them tug at your
- 1:40Speaker 4: heart string so much, and that's what moved you so much.
- 1:42Speaker 4: And so that was kind of the thing that I
- 1:44Speaker 4: set out to do in this album, is I wanted
- 1:45Speaker 4: to make a sad love song.
- 1:47Speaker 2: So when I figured out this title, I was like,
- 1:49Speaker 2: it's perfect.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's so interesting how we can yearn to feel that
- 1:53Speaker 1: emotion when we need to feel that emotion and really
- 1:56Speaker 1: like go deep into feeling sadness when you listen to
- 1:59Speaker 1: those sad songs. I have them on my list. I
- 2:02Speaker 1: know when I'm going to go there, what I'm going
- 2:03Speaker 1: to feel, and when when you conjure that emotion for
- 2:07Speaker 1: somebody else, what do you think about, Like, how does
- 2:09Speaker 1: that make you feel that you can get that out
- 2:11Speaker 1: of someone that you've never met before.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's a great question. Well put,
- 2:14Speaker 4: I think that that's the dream. I mean, that's sort
- 2:17Speaker 4: of the primary goal in what I do. I just
- 2:20Speaker 4: always want to make people feel understood and hopefully like
- 2:23Speaker 4: provide some sort of catharsist or something. And all of
- 2:26Speaker 4: my favorite artists do that for me, and so I
- 2:27Speaker 4: guess that's the that's the guiding light through all of it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So a liver arrigo is here.
- 2:31Speaker 1: What is something that you think someone in their early
- 2:36Speaker 1: twenties who falls in love. What is a common mistake
- 2:39Speaker 1: you see looking back of someone that falls in love
- 2:41Speaker 1: in their early twenties?
- 2:43Speaker 2: For example, Gosh, you really shouldn't ask me. I'm no expert.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I mean I think that's a common thing. When you're
- 2:51Speaker 4: like feeling really intensely for someone that you kind of
- 2:54Speaker 4: like get like like you don't because on your friendships
- 2:58Speaker 4: as much.
- 2:58Speaker 2: You don't focus on your work or whatever. And I
- 3:00Speaker 2: think that's a recipe for disaster.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I mean it's a very very easy one, but I
- 3:04Speaker 4: think that's really important. I see me and my friends
- 3:06Speaker 4: sometimes fall into that trap and it just never ends well.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So when you think, when you think about the music
- 3:12Speaker 1: that's coming out, what will you do when all of
- 3:15Speaker 1: these songs are released to the world at once?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Where will you be How will you see the feedback?
- 3:20Speaker 3: How will you look at the reaction?
- 3:22Speaker 1: Because it's such a you know it, we don't know it,
- 3:25Speaker 1: everyone's anticipating it. Is it sequential, what's the story, what's
- 3:29Speaker 1: the theme? Where does it go? What direction? So how
- 3:32Speaker 1: will you handle that moment?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Probably have a drink or something, I don't know. Yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 2: it's a really weird feeling.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean, I've lived with the songs for so long
- 3:43Speaker 4: and I have my own opinions about them, like you know,
- 3:46Speaker 4: in my own brain, but putting them out into the world,
- 3:47Speaker 4: and even putting out this song dropped Dead out into
- 3:49Speaker 4: the world, and like seeing the way it reverberates with people.
- 3:51Speaker 4: It's a totally different feeling, and I don't know, it's scary,
- 3:54Speaker 4: But I'm so proud of the album and I love
- 3:59Speaker 4: so many of the songs and I feel really connected
- 4:01Speaker 4: to it. So, you know, I guess it's all you
- 4:02Speaker 4: can ask for at the end of the day.
- 4:04Speaker 1: What about Okay, we don't know that where the album
- 4:06Speaker 1: is going to go, but are there more songs inspired
- 4:09Speaker 1: by vulnerability or the other side the healing aspect.
- 4:14Speaker 2: That's a good question. I don't know. I mean, the
- 4:17Speaker 2: album's really there's a lot going on.
- 4:21Speaker 4: It's hard to like encapsulate it in like one word
- 4:24Speaker 4: or like one specific feeling. It's very all over the
- 4:27Speaker 4: place in a way that I like, like a journey.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Yeah, there's just so much to unpack in it, And
- 4:35Speaker 4: I don't know. I think it was about like discovery.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I guess for me, like like, uh, discovering so many
- 4:39Speaker 4: things about myself and also just being in a real relationship.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I think, like a good relationship really holds a mirror
- 4:45Speaker 4: to you and like shows you parts of yourself that
- 4:46Speaker 4: you never would have been able to see before.
- 4:49Speaker 2: So yeah, there's a lot of a lot of looking
- 4:52Speaker 2: in word.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I guess that's important in your job.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we're going to take a break with Olivia Rodrigo.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Come back here. What two point seven Kiss FM. I'm
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the three two three next. You know what that means?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Since you grew up around here to pay a bill
- 5:06Speaker 1: I kiss hang on kiss FM.
- 5:11Speaker 3: There it is here she is on kiss drop dead.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know what's so interesting about a song listening to
- 5:18Speaker 1: that song, the lyrics and the songs that we've played
- 5:21Speaker 1: for over the years, is when you can put into
- 5:24Speaker 1: words succinctly a feeling somebody's having, and especially with some
- 5:29Speaker 1: clever stuff like they're just like haven the Cure reference right,
- 5:32Speaker 1: like you know what you're trying to say, but you
- 5:35Speaker 1: can actually say it. Wee a lot we don't. We
- 5:36Speaker 1: can't say things like that, but we can think we
- 5:39Speaker 1: feel it. You can put it into words. It's a
- 5:41Speaker 1: magic power to that.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Oh thanks, yeah, I mean it's from what I'm always
- 5:45Speaker 2: trying to do.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I just just wrote the song about like a really
- 5:47Speaker 4: wonderful first date, and every time I listen to it,
- 5:49Speaker 4: I just like think back to that, that wonderful feeling,
- 5:51Speaker 4: and uh yeah, it's a little bit a time capsule.
- 5:53Speaker 3: It's great and.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Can can one? I asked this to the group. Can
- 5:58Speaker 1: one maintain the level of excitement for the first date on?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I mean, that's the goal. I just love knowing that
- 6:07Speaker 4: Olivia Rodrigo stock someone on the internet.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Before our first date.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Kid, Yeah, I did that before every first date, and
- 6:14Speaker 4: so I go, bag, yeah you do.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So you think it's important to know as much as
- 6:19Speaker 3: you can.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I guess I guess, yeah, you just you can find
- 6:24Speaker 4: a lot of stuff. Yes, I guess there's such a
- 6:26Speaker 4: thing as going too deep. I've definitely like been saying.
- 6:28Speaker 3: You could go too deep and then you can't go
- 6:30Speaker 3: back from that.
- 6:31Speaker 4: I've been on like dates with people they're like, oh,
- 6:33Speaker 4: and my mom did this, and I'm like, I totally
- 6:34Speaker 4: know exactly like what their mom does.
- 6:36Speaker 2: We're like everything, and I'm like trying to pretend like
- 6:38Speaker 2: I'm surprised.
- 6:39Speaker 1: That's what I was going to ask you, Like, if
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know that you love horses and then you say
- 6:42Speaker 1: I love horses, do you pretend like, oh, I mean,
- 6:45Speaker 1: do you have to you have to act like you
- 6:47Speaker 1: don't know something that.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Say I know?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I think my worst one is I like stock someone
- 6:54Speaker 4: on Spotify once and then like at the date, I
- 6:56Speaker 4: was like, oh my god, I love this song, Like
- 6:58Speaker 4: have you ever heard of it? Yeah?
- 6:59Speaker 3: That was that.
- 7:02Speaker 2: That was not good, I mean not genuine.
- 7:06Speaker 1: They say in life for success, you must prepare and
- 7:10Speaker 1: everything you do, and that is total preparation for success on.
- 7:15Speaker 3: The date or in the relationship. Power and ye, shame
- 7:20Speaker 3: and all of that.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I agree.
- 7:22Speaker 3: It's kiss FM s christ with you, Olivia Rodrigou.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Here is there anything that like, is there a track
- 7:27Speaker 1: and you able to tell us what it is? Maybe
- 7:29Speaker 1: you can, but is there a track that is on
- 7:30Speaker 1: the album that you thought it's too vulnerable to put
- 7:32Speaker 1: on or too close? It's like the combination to the
- 7:36Speaker 1: whole lock and you said, you know, I'm gonna do
- 7:38Speaker 1: it anyway.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a few songs. I mean, it's it's just
- 7:42Speaker 4: a weird feeling. I mean, I I got into songwriting
- 7:45Speaker 4: just because I loved the way it made me feel
- 7:47Speaker 4: to express my emotions and it felt like Catharsis and
- 7:50Speaker 4: it felt like it just helped me process stuff. But
- 7:53Speaker 4: then it like it's a different feeling putting it out
- 7:55Speaker 4: and you're like, oh this stuff that you know, I
- 7:56Speaker 4: got to process on my own at my piano.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Now it's suddenly everyone else is. It's definitely a weird feeling.
- 8:00Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I guess I'm I guess I'm getting used with older
- 8:03Speaker 4: that I get, and I think that it's important to
- 8:05Speaker 4: be vulnerable. I think I would hate to put out
- 8:08Speaker 4: a song that felt, you know, like I wasn't digging
- 8:10Speaker 4: that deep. But I guess I don't know.
- 8:12Speaker 1: When you think about the fame, the success, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: you're well known, people love your music, they know who
- 8:19Speaker 1: you are, do you think about things you want to
- 8:21Speaker 1: make sure you keep unchanged no matter how that evolves
- 8:25Speaker 1: with you, because it's not normal.
- 8:27Speaker 3: It's not easy for sure.
- 8:28Speaker 4: I mean, I think it gets harder to even make
- 8:30Speaker 4: music the more kind of well known you get, and
- 8:33Speaker 4: you kind of start to let people's opinions infiltrate and
- 8:36Speaker 4: you're subconscious whether or not you're aware of it or not.
- 8:38Speaker 2: And so I think that's been something that I've been
- 8:39Speaker 2: really trying to protect.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Is like the sanctity of like, you know, me just
- 8:43Speaker 4: sitting in my room and writing a song. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 4: there's something really beautiful and magical about that, and you know,
- 8:48Speaker 4: it's something to something to protect the pure like childlike.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Love of music, you know.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So the new song is out now. The new album,
- 8:56Speaker 1: You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love
- 8:57Speaker 1: is out June twelfth. Very exciting. Thank you so much
- 9:01Speaker 1: for coming. It's great to see you and your kindness.
