- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, the 30th of
- 0:15December, it's a Tuesday and well, just when you thought you
- 0:20might be watching the end of the Boxing Day Test match of
- 0:22cricket, no, that was over in two days.
- 0:25Just in a heartbeat. So we are not watching cricket
- 0:28today. We are doing whatever our day
- 0:30holds. It is hopefully holidays for
- 0:32most of you, where you can take it easy and recoup and re
- 0:37energise yourself. And what better way to do that
- 0:40than to follow the life of Jesus and to hear the rhythms of his
- 0:44life as recorded by Luke. So that we can know for sure
- 0:48that he is the Lord and that what he has done is not just
- 0:52some random act of kindness into the universe.
- 0:54But friends, it's for you and it's for me.
- 0:58What a glorious truth that we are going to continue to explore
- 1:02as we travel back in time and accompany Jesus in his life and
- 1:06ministry. And today will be no different
- 1:08as we follow Him through his temptation and then rejection in
- 1:13his hometown, and then he will get cracking on his ministry.
- 1:18So much to read. Let's dive in reading together
- 1:20Luke chapter 4. Then Jesus, full of the Holy
- 1:33Spirit, returned from the Jordan River.
- 1:36He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted
- 1:39by the devil for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing all that time
- 1:44and became very hungry. Then the devil said to him, If
- 1:48you are the Son of God, tell the stone to become a loaf of bread.
- 1:54But Jesus told him no. The scriptures say people do not
- 1:58live by bread alone. Then the devil took him up and
- 2:02revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world.
- 2:05In a moment of time I will give you the glory of these kingdoms
- 2:09and authority over them. The devil said, Because they are
- 2:12mine to give to anyone I please, I will give it all to you if you
- 2:17will worship me, Jesus replied. The scriptures say you must
- 2:22worship the Lord your God and serve only him.
- 2:26Then the devil took him to Jerusalem to the highest point
- 2:29of the temple and said, if you are the Son of God, jump off.
- 2:33For the scriptures say he will order his angels to protect and
- 2:37guard you and they will hold you up with their hands so you won't
- 2:41even hurt your foot on a stone. Jesus responded.
- 2:46The Scriptures also say you must not test the Lord your God.
- 2:51When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him
- 2:55until the next opportunity came. Then Jesus returned to Galilee,
- 3:00filled with the Holy Spirit's power.
- 3:02Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
- 3:05He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by
- 3:09everyone. When he came to the village of
- 3:12Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue
- 3:16on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
- 3:19The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him.
- 3:22He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written.
- 3:25The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to
- 3:30bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that
- 3:34captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the
- 3:37oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord's
- 3:41favour has come. He rolled up the scroll, handed
- 3:45it back to the attendant, and sat down.
- 3:48All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
- 3:52Then he began to speak to them. The scripture you've just heard
- 3:56has been fulfilled this very day.
- 4:00Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words
- 4:04that came from his lips. How can this be, they asked.
- 4:07Isn't this Joseph's son? Then he said, You will
- 4:12undoubtedly quote me this proverb.
- 4:14Physician, heal yourself. Meaning, do miracles here in
- 4:18your hometown like you did those in Capernaum.
- 4:21But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own
- 4:25hometown. Certainly there were many needy
- 4:28widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heavens were
- 4:32closed for 3 1/2 years and a severe famine devastated the
- 4:35land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any
- 4:38of them. He was sent instead to a
- 4:40foreigner, a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
- 4:46And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet
- 4:49Elijah, but the only one healed was Naaman, Assyrian.
- 4:55When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
- 4:59Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the
- 5:01hill on which the town was built.
- 5:04They intended to push him over the Cliff, but he passed right
- 5:07through the crowd and went on his way.
- 5:11Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught
- 5:15there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
- 5:18There too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he
- 5:21spoke with authority. Once when he was in the
- 5:25synagogue, a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit, cried
- 5:29out, shouting, Go away. Why are you interfering with us?
- 5:33Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?
- 5:36I know who you are, the Holy One of God.
- 5:41But Jesus reprimanded him. Be quiet.
- 5:44Come out of the man, he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man
- 5:49on the floor as the crowd watched.
- 5:51Then it came out of him without hurting him further.
- 5:55Amazed, the people exclaimed what authority and power this
- 6:00man's words possess. Even evil spirits obey him, and
- 6:04they flee at his command. The news about Jesus spread
- 6:08through every village in the entire region.
- 6:13After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon's home
- 6:16where he found Simon's mother in law, very sick with a high
- 6:19fever. Please heal her, everyone
- 6:23begged. Standing at her bedside.
- 6:25He rebuked the fever and it left her, and she got up at once and
- 6:30prepared a meal for them. As the sun went down that
- 6:33evening, people throughout the village brought sick family
- 6:36members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases
- 6:39were, the touch of His hand healed everyone.
- 6:43Many were possessed by demons, and the demons came out at his
- 6:47command, shouting, You are the Son of God.
- 6:51But because they knew He was the Messiah, He rebuked them and
- 6:55refused to let them speak. Early the next morning, Jesus
- 7:00went out to an isolated place. The crowd searched everywhere
- 7:04for Him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not
- 7:07to leave them. But he replied, I must preach
- 7:10the good news of the Kingdom of God in other towns too, because
- 7:14that is why I was sent. So he continued to travel
- 7:18around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.
- 7:31Ah Jesus, your mission was clear from the outset.
- 7:34You knew exactly what your task was, and you just went about it.
- 7:39Healing, preaching the truth of your Kingdom, amazing people
- 7:45with your kindness and inclusion.
- 7:50Jesus, thank you that you have a singular focus in your time
- 7:54here, your earthly ministry, and that is that we should be saved,
- 8:00that we should get to know you, and that through your actions,
- 8:04through your death and through your resurrection, you would
- 8:07forge away through our sinful nature into the arms of our
- 8:13perfect Heavenly Father. What an incredible thing, what
- 8:18an incredible mission that you just took on single mindedly.
- 8:22Thank you for your love. Thank you that the entirety of
- 8:26all that you are is just love, love for us, welcoming us back
- 8:32to you. And you have certainly found a
- 8:35way to do that. So we just accept this gift of
- 8:39your grace. Thank you that you wash us
- 8:42clean, that you give us a new start.
- 8:46Perfect in the eyes of your Father through everything that
- 8:49you have done for us. We love you, Jesus, and it's
- 8:53only in your grace that we can pray these things.
- 8:58Amen.
