- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Morning in Australia.
- 0:07Tad Eggleston: Welcome back to the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 Panels.
- 0:12Tad Eggleston: Today, we're gonna look at Lovin' Rockets Volume 2, No. 8, with this,
- 0:18Tad Eggleston: I think they brought out the GIMP.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: And the superhero.
- 0:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah. And Luba's Comics and Stories number 4.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: So, we'll start out with.
- 0:35Maria Pena: With that superhero, outfit, is that a cape, or… I thought it was her hair.
- 0:40Marisol: What I was thinking, too.
- 0:42Tad Eggleston: I can't tell if it's a cape, hair, feathers, it could be any of the above.
- 0:47Maria Pena: And it's got lighting bolts as well, like…
- 0:51Maria Pena: It's just shininess or something, yeah.
- 0:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it seems to be coming out of her shoulder, though.
- 0:56Marisol: Heck, yeah.
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: I think it's a cape.
- 1:01Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: With… with, like… Blue feather tape.
- 1:04Maria Pena: And she kind of looks like the phantom.
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:08Maria Pena: Yeah. Just say, yeah.
- 1:13Maria Pena: Very interesting.
- 1:16Tad Eggleston: The first story was…
- 1:19Maria Pena: That was so weird, and it was… it was fun, though, like, this woman who decides she doesn't wanna…
- 1:25Maria Pena: You know, she doesn't want to see anybody that knew her, so she moves… she…
- 1:30Maria Pena: bandages herself like a mummy, and moves to a different place where nobody knows her, and the doctor forced her Fausto, is like, oh, she's crazy, kind of thing. She's narcissistic, and so on, it's just so…
- 1:54Maria Pena: And I love the… in the next… on the next page, when she… she's on the bed, and there's these little symbols of things she's going through, and there's this duck. Yep, just a random duck.
- 2:08Tad Eggleston: knife, faucet.
- 2:11Maria Pena: Yeah, she's just in turmoil over these things. Yeah, very cool.
- 2:18Maria Pena: And then he seems to miss her at the end, like, oh, she'll be back, you know, because she's…
- 2:24Maria Pena: He's been begging her all this time, you know, just going, blah blah blah, she's this, she's that.
- 2:29Maria Pena: And then he's like, he'll be back, he must. Very…
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: I like… he's got, what, cigarettes, the devil, a cell phone, a nun…
- 2:41Maria Pena: None. An open door.
- 2:43Tad Eggleston: Esophagus and an open door.
- 2:45Maria Pena: Yeah, very odd.
- 2:48Maria Pena: Oh, this was so weird, the, the Maggie story. Not weird, but, there was some… I love this,
- 2:56Maria Pena: the next page, I think it's.
- 2:59Marisol: Yeah. This was a funny opening.
- 3:02Maria Pena: All this stuff that happens in this black page, and it's all because it's been seen through the screen.
- 3:09Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 3:10Maria Pena: Like, that's… that's a camera.
- 3:11Maria Pena: point of view, you know.
- 3:13Tad Eggleston: And…
- 3:13Maria Pena: It's… yeah.
- 3:15Maria Pena: I thought that was very clever.
- 3:20Tad Eggleston: Were you filming this time?
- 3:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: I love how, how, how… Vivian just walks over to the bar without putting on more clothes.
- 3:36Marisol: Who has the.
- 3:37Maria Pena: The dude's not.
- 3:38Tad Eggleston: I always go to the bar in bikini and boots.
- 3:43Maria Pena: And in case… Kiss of girlfriend, yeah.
- 3:51Maria Pena: And, Doyle.
- 3:55Marisol: Hmm, let's interesting.
- 3:56Maria Pena: What about that guy?
- 3:57Maria Pena: The oil is back, he's getting more and more old and weird looking.
- 4:06Tad Eggleston: Tells the story about how he goes back with Sid.
- 4:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 4:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 4:13Maria Pena: And, we, we find that Sid's the one who introduced him to, Balatio.
- 4:20Maria Pena: As in Doyle. Right. Do I need to… Sid?
- 4:27Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 4:31Maria Pena: I love that kiss that Vivian gives.
- 4:37Maria Pena: Maggie, and Maggie's like, whoop!
- 4:42Marisol: Knocking her off the bar stool. I like her face in the panel before, where she's just kind of, like.
- 4:47Marisol: Grimace with panic.
- 4:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:51Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, yes, yes.
- 4:55Maria Pena: This very, very expression, like, it's full of expressions, this page.
- 5:00Maria Pena: I got lots of crap.
- 5:01Tad Eggleston: I like the panel after.
- 5:04Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, when she's like, whoa, you know, like, that was…
- 5:07Tad Eggleston: The bar… the way the… the… the way the… the…
- 5:11Tad Eggleston: The stools and the bar itself are lined up. They almost look like the… the ropes of a wrestling ring.
- 5:18Maria Pena: Oh, Jesus.
- 5:19Marisol: That's slouch.
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: against them.
- 5:22Tad Eggleston: 50.
- 5:25Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:29Maria Pena: No, this is so animated, it's just great.
- 5:37Marisol: And I guess after she went to the car, she decided to come back with clothes.
- 5:42Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, eventually you gotta get dressed.
- 5:47Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, it looks like all she put on was a t-shirt.
- 5:52Marisol: Yeah.
- 5:53Maria Pena: Yeah, I don't know that she's clear.
- 5:55Marisol: Basically, what amounts to a bikini bottom.
- 5:58Tad Eggleston: Well, she already had the bikini bottom on.
- 6:01Marisol: Yeah, but this one's a different color.
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, I guess it is a different color. Okay.
- 6:06Tad Eggleston: M.
- 6:09Maria Pena: Oh, I think she got dressed in the bar somewhere, and she got.
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 6:12Maria Pena: t-shirt.
- 6:13Marisol: No, because it was after… Because she kissed Maggie, and she's still in her underwear.
- 6:18Marisol: And then when she comes back with the little idol thingy, she stole.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:23Maria Pena: She had to go out the car.
- 6:24Tad Eggleston: far. Yeah.
- 6:25Maria Pena: Yes.
- 6:26Marisol: Yeah.
- 6:27Maria Pena: Yeah, okay, yeah. Very important to work these things out.
- 6:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:37Maria Pena: Full parties for wedbacks and hillbillies.
- 6:42Maria Pena: Ugh… Oh yeah, and then Maggie has a conversation with Hopi, I believe.
- 6:49Tad Eggleston: Chorus.
- 6:50Maria Pena: And that makes her feel like maybe she should be in a relationship with Viv or something, and Viv goes, no, man, I'm straight, I'm not a.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: No, I'm just messing around.
- 7:02Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 7:02Marisol: It's like…
- 7:03Maria Pena: Okay, which is pretty sad, because I think Maggie's feeling a little bit slowly.
- 7:10Marisol: Yeah.
- 7:11Maria Pena: Isolated.
- 7:17Maria Pena: Yeah, so…
- 7:18Marisol: -Oh.
- 7:20Maria Pena: Yeah, she's… she's… she's a bit…
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: And Reno's looking for…
- 7:27Maria Pena: for Viv.
- 7:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:33Marisol: Honestly, Viv kind of pissed me off, this issue.
- 7:36Tad Eggleston: Viv… Viv was… was… I mean, Viv pisses me off.
- 7:40Tad Eggleston: 50% of the time already, just cause…
- 7:44Marisol: That's fair.
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: Grow up.
- 7:46Maria Pena: Mmm, yeah.
- 7:47Marisol: Just because she's Viv.
- 7:49Tad Eggleston: Viv, Viv is a drama magnet.
- 7:54Tad Eggleston: Cute drama magnet, but a drama magnet.
- 7:57Marisol: Yes, that cannot be…
- 7:59Maria Pena: I'm like…
- 7:59Marisol: For anyone involved.
- 8:01Maria Pena: Sometimes that goes… that goes with the territory.
- 8:09Maria Pena: But yeah… and then, oh, and then Maggie hears something on the telly that the woman's body has been found, and I think the implication is that she wonders whether it was Viv, whether Sid did something to Viv, so she goes out and looking through the window. You know.
- 8:30Tad Eggleston: Where somehow they go from… from knife to knife, to everybody's happy, to big party.
- 8:37Marisol: Nope.
- 8:39Tad Eggleston: It's just how some people roll.
- 8:40Marisol: alone.
- 8:42Maria Pena: Yeah, it's just that, you know, that, that… That drama.
- 8:49Maria Pena: magnet thing, you know? It's just… she's just chaos.
- 8:55Marisol: And I like this whole page, like, the sequence of… we see Maggie walking around outside, and she sees Viv through a window, like, she's outside.
- 9:05Maria Pena: I'm looking.
- 9:05Marisol: in, But then at the last panel, She's inside looking out.
- 9:12Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:15Maria Pena: She's alone.
- 9:16Marisol: No, I just, I just like that.
- 9:18Maria Pena: Yeah, no, it's, it's very good.
- 9:23Maria Pena: Yeah, huh.
- 9:26Maria Pena: A little stunt boy. The art of the.
- 9:29Marisol: Yeah.
- 9:29Maria Pena: Oh, look this… That's an interesting, you know, flashback to…
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I mean…
- 9:40Maria Pena: I still go there.
- 9:42Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, we've been dealing with that guy for WAY too long.
- 9:47Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:49Maria Pena: I mean, this is 2003.
- 9:55Maria Pena: And I… yeah.
- 9:58Maria Pena: Very odd.
- 10:00Maria Pena: Little story.
- 10:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think all Beto's stories in this one are just odd little…
- 10:09Maria Pena: That face was…
- 10:10Marisol: Odd little things.
- 10:11Maria Pena: So that…
- 10:12Maria Pena: The woman that puts the stud boy in a… in a, in a bin, in a rubbish bin, and… Yeah.
- 10:18Marisol: What is it?
- 10:18Maria Pena: one of the day.
- 10:20Maria Pena: And the expression's like, And she's just gonna be… not so or something.
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: Then he works his way out.
- 10:31Maria Pena: Yeah, because he's… Yep. He's like…
- 10:38Maria Pena: Oh, and Julio, they… I think I'd have to read this one after the other, because I'm not…
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: I think Julio's Day works best when you read it all together.
- 10:50Maria Pena: It's alright.
- 10:51Marisol: Yeah.
- 10:51Tad Eggleston: Really, really good graphic novel.
- 10:54Maria Pena: Yeah, and it's just a day in the life of Julio.
- 10:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 10:59Maria Pena: Progressively, he's getting older, I guess.
- 11:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 11:03Maria Pena: randoms a day in Julio's life.
- 11:06Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: And then we get some high soft lisp.
- 11:12Maria Pena: Yeah, still the dissolution of a marriage.
- 11:17Maria Pena: Which, they're very off.
- 11:21Maria Pena: very fucking weird, you know, marriage, I guess, you know.
- 11:26Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 11:26Maria Pena: photos.
- 11:28Maria Pena: Damn.
- 11:29Tad Eggleston: I don't think I noticed all the… Guns.
- 11:33Tad Eggleston: with…
- 11:34Maria Pena: Berutic.
- 11:34Tad Eggleston: Ugh.
- 11:36Tad Eggleston: Well, like, I caught the mask, and… or things…
- 11:40Marisol: Sticky.
- 11:40Tad Eggleston: Out of it, but, like, it's all… it's all guns.
- 11:45Maria Pena: Yeah, it's very disturbing.
- 11:48Marisol: I feel like she's taking Something just a little too far.
- 11:52Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 11:53Marisol: Just a little bit.
- 11:56Maria Pena: She's getting electrocuted by them.
- 11:59Maria Pena: So…
- 12:00Maria Pena: But then you got… then you gotta go to the next page, and he's, you know, he's also subjecting his, you know.
- 12:09Maria Pena: Yeah, so I was…
- 12:11Tad Eggleston: I don't feel like they had a healthy relationship.
- 12:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 12:15Marisol: No…
- 12:16Maria Pena: At least it was equally, you know, like…
- 12:22Maria Pena: They're both… they're both getting the… a bit of the treatment.
- 12:29Maria Pena: And she's… her and her obsession with Scott.
- 12:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 12:38Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 12:39Tad Eggleston: Well, he's in a band.
- 12:41Marisol: Excuse me.
- 12:42Maria Pena: cape.
- 12:44Maria Pena: That'd be sick.
- 12:45Tad Eggleston: I love this last panel, where he's imagining himself.
- 12:49Maria Pena: Yes.
- 12:49Tad Eggleston: She's imagining Scott.
- 12:51Maria Pena: Yeah, he just loves himself. I know, I thought that was hilarious.
- 13:02Maria Pena: And then he's so… To be a video about himself, and…
- 13:10Maria Pena: She's lost a baby, she doesn't win another one.
- 13:17Maria Pena: And then…
- 13:21Maria Pena: he gets annoyed because she will do things to those guys on the… that he… she never did for him, or… no, what was it, you know, you let that guy fuck you up the ass, and, you know, it took 3 days for me to fuck you up the ass, so now he,
- 13:40Maria Pena: Yeah, it's like, really, after all these transgressions, you… you take… you take, that little thing, you know, and make it a problem, like, after, really? You know.
- 13:53Marisol: Nope.
- 13:55Maria Pena: and I think that… I guess that's what happens, you know, like, in a marriage, you know, that's dissolving.
- 14:03Maria Pena: His mistake is just, like, an excuse, isn't it? Like…
- 14:06Maria Pena: A tiny little thing, considering what they preached.
- 14:10Marisol: panels hurt.
- 14:12Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 14:14Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:15Marisol: Yeah, I don't love you, and the only reason you're not dead is because I'd go to jail.
- 14:20Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:25Marisol: Just…
- 14:26Maria Pena: Precinct.
- 14:26Marisol: Overall, an incredibly toxic relationship between the two of them.
- 14:31Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 14:37Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:39Tad Eggleston: And that's all… that's all of that issue.
- 14:43Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:47Tad Eggleston: Such a… such a way to, to, to, to, to… The back cover's kinda cool.
- 14:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I admires a pen.
- 14:56Maria Pena: Yeah, it's like an old 1950s.
- 15:00Maria Pena: Album of… Collector's cards or something.
- 15:06Maria Pena: I ain't look like Discover, it's just… Neat.
- 15:12Maria Pena: Yeah, so that's that.
- 15:15Tad Eggleston: I think this is a, a week where I liked… I like the, the…
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: A little bit comics and stories more.
- 15:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, I liked that the Jaime story no, wrong issue.
- 15:35Tad Eggleston: I like the Jaime story.
- 15:38Tad Eggleston: A lot.
- 15:39Maria Pena: Going down.
- 15:40Tad Eggleston: What?
- 15:41Tad Eggleston: But,
- 15:47Tad Eggleston: What did it do that for?
- 15:51Marisol: -Oh.
- 15:53Tad Eggleston: We'll find it. But, but, but…
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: But Vivian was so annoying, and Maggie was so sad. And…
- 16:03Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:04Tad Eggleston: Gilbert's stories were… were… Either completely weird, And strange.
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: Or… Jesus.
- 16:15Maria Pena: It's true.
- 16:15Tad Eggleston: Heartbreaking.
- 16:19Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:19Marisol: There was no in between this time.
- 16:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:28Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:33Maria Pena: But, oh, God, we're quiet, we should be talking while you do this thing.
- 16:37Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 16:38Maria Pena: That is trying to find me.
- 16:40Tad Eggleston: But now.
- 16:41Maria Pena: tried to share the screen for the next one. We're open now.
- 16:46Tad Eggleston: Week.
- 16:46Maria Pena: I'm here, like…
- 16:49Tad Eggleston: I was making some noise.
- 16:51Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah. There we go.
- 16:52Marisol: You just gotta sit with the weird and the sad.
- 16:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:56Maria Pena: Hmm…
- 16:57Tad Eggleston: And now we've got the lovers and Hector. Before we get into this, I want to say that even though there is a comment about how anytime Fortunato's around, he rules everything.
- 17:12Tad Eggleston: We don't see Fortunato go full-on Fortunato at any point during this issue.
- 17:17Maria Pena: No, there is no Fortunato kind of moment.
- 17:22Marisol: It's incredible, honestly.
- 17:25Maria Pena: He said he's being, what is he being? Like, like some kind of guru?
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he's like the fortune teller.
- 17:35Maria Pena: Fortune teller, yeah. Well, he… I guess fortune is in his name, so I guess… It's true.
- 17:42Tad Eggleston: That's true. We start out…
- 17:44Maria Pena: This is funny.
- 17:47Tad Eggleston: Hector and Petra are… are… Kinda… kinda getting it on, but mostly getting stoned.
- 17:54Maria Pena: Until… Yeah, he's super stoned.
- 17:56Tad Eggleston: Until Venus answers the phone and walks in on them to say, Hey!
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: So… one of you needs to go pick up Tia Lubo.
- 18:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 18:08Marisol: Yep.
- 18:08Maria Pena: But they're so stowed that they keep forgetting.
- 18:11Tad Eggleston: Some more, yeah.
- 18:12Maria Pena: Like, they are completely fucked up.
- 18:17Maria Pena: Hector, you know, forgets where he left the car, and…
- 18:24Maria Pena: Can't find it, and somehow he stumbles onto Luba, which is funny, because he walks into the correct bar.
- 18:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he does… he does somehow… Get to the right place.
- 18:36Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 18:37Marisol: By pure dumb luck.
- 18:40Tad Eggleston: Utterly shocking.
- 18:41Maria Pena: But, yeah… And.
- 18:46Tad Eggleston: And then Kamo shows up.
- 18:49Maria Pena: Oh, this is a separate story of Carol.
- 18:52Tad Eggleston: flashback.
- 18:53Maria Pena: flesh.
- 18:54Maria Pena: to win there.
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we got a… we got a Kamo flashback.
- 18:58Maria Pena: No.
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: To before he was burned.
- 19:04Maria Pena: Now…
- 19:04Tad Eggleston: When they were both on…
- 19:07Maria Pena: Here is that he was kind of taking her to throw her off the cliff.
- 19:14Tad Eggleston: Beautiful.
- 19:14Maria Pena: I think, like, she, she sort of, managed to tip, tip, him off to the cops, or tip the people that he works for to the cops.
- 19:26Maria Pena: And… And she's… she's like, well, I think, you know, if you're gonna throw me
- 19:34Maria Pena: You're gonna throw me off this cliff, at least, you know, fucking…
- 19:38Tad Eggleston: Last request.
- 19:40Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 19:41Maria Pena: And I guess he, you know, he changed his mind.
- 19:45Maria Pena: It's a little bit stupidest.
- 19:48Marisol: Oh, God.
- 19:50Marisol: Sorry, someone's revving their engine unnecessarily outside.
- 19:54Tad Eggleston: Well, that's always…
- 19:55Maria Pena: Can't hear it. Can't hear it.
- 19:57Marisol: I apologize.
- 20:01Maria Pena: And then, Camo is, runs into Fortunato. Fortunato!
- 20:09Maria Pena: Oops. Yeah.
- 20:10Tad Eggleston: Who tells Kamo that he's earned a special place in heaven.
- 20:14Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 20:17Maria Pena: But maybe that was, him before that. That was Camel kind of feeling regretful that he even thought about it.
- 20:25Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 20:25Maria Pena: a little bit of this.
- 20:30Marisol: I forget how even back then, like, before he was burned, he never really said much of anything at all.
- 20:36Tad Eggleston: No.
- 20:36Maria Pena: Oh, no, yes, let me see.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: No, his thing is he was, he was the sexy, silent type.
- 20:43Marisol: Yeah.
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: Then… We're back to Hector, and we're meeting… An Elvis-looking friend.
- 20:57Maria Pena: Blackie. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 21:00Maria Pena: And he's, you know, speaks like Elvis St. Edio, and all this…
- 21:09Tad Eggleston: And he's like, no, you can't leave this chick here.
- 21:12Tad Eggleston: He's gotta be the only one that doesn't want Luba left.
- 21:17Tad Eggleston: Most guys are happy to have.
- 21:19Marisol: Thank you.
- 21:19Tad Eggleston: around.
- 21:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 21:29Marisol: - we finally get his little…
- 21:32Marisol: Tedal card for what you're not doing.
- 21:38Maria Pena: Yeah, so what was that, the, Fortunate… oh, Fortunat is, yeah.
- 21:42Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 21:43Maria Pena: Doing his shtick in… in the,
- 21:47Maria Pena: the street, and he's… Fritz is helping him out by dressing like Pocahontas or something.
- 21:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, isn't that what you always think when you think fortune-telling… Mmm… sexy dude?
- 22:02Maria Pena: Is it?
- 22:04Tad Eggleston: There should be a…
- 22:05Marisol: Sure!
- 22:07Maria Pena: Sexy Pocahontas girl.
- 22:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 22:09Marisol: Yep.
- 22:11Marisol: Okay, this is the natural reaction, you know?
- 22:17Tad Eggleston: Your little sister couldn't stay for the adulation.
- 22:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:25Tad Eggleston: Like, why do you care if she's around? I'm here!
- 22:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, we missed when they bumped their heads, though.
- 22:32Maria Pena: Oh yeah, that was.
- 22:34Marisol: Oh!
- 22:34Maria Pena: Hector… Hector and Luba.
- 22:37Tad Eggleston: They slammed their heads together at one point.
- 22:39Maria Pena: Weird.
- 22:40Tad Eggleston: Ain't they?
- 22:41Marisol: Ouch.
- 22:41Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:43Maria Pena: Yes.
- 22:44Tad Eggleston: Or maybe that's still to come.
- 22:46Maria Pena: Oh, oh no, maybe there is still to come.
- 22:51Tad Eggleston: I just was looking at…
- 22:55Maria Pena: I guess that, that, that bit with, with Fortunato is…
- 23:00Maria Pena: Happening afterward. Like, that's some in-between.
- 23:04Tad Eggleston: Because it just, it looks like she's got the band-aid.
- 23:07Maria Pena: Yeah, but this is… it's not a… it's like a sequel, like, it's happened afterwards, like, it is not non-linear. No, it's non-linear, yeah.
- 23:16Maria Pena: Now we're back to tonight, if you want to call it that.
- 23:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:21Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 23:23Maria Pena: And that's when he…
- 23:24Marisol: A lot of back and forth on this issue.
- 23:26Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 23:27Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 23:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is a fun story, though. I, I, I…
- 23:32Maria Pena: And that's when they whack their heads and…
- 23:35Maria Pena: And then we find out that she and Camo had a, oh, blow up.
- 23:40Tad Eggleston: fight.
- 23:41Maria Pena: a fight.
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 23:46Maria Pena: And that's why she ended up in the bar wanting to get taken home. Right.
- 23:53Tad Eggleston: And then they find… then they find her sister's car by the restaurant.
- 23:58Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:00Maria Pena: Yeah, so who knows what… I tore us up to that.
- 24:06Tad Eggleston: you know.
- 24:06Maria Pena: I guess he just…
- 24:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's good, because Petra would have kicked the shit out of him.
- 24:14Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 24:16Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:17Marisol: I mean, we've seen her kick the shit out of people before.
- 24:19Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 24:20Marisol: She didn't do all that great.
- 24:21Tad Eggleston: Nothing. But then Luba leaves with Fortunato.
- 24:30Tad Eggleston: And Hector's… Between the girls.
- 24:34Maria Pena: That was funny, that…
- 24:37Maria Pena: Yeah. Little moment when he's getting… getting his head massaged, and there's the two sets of boobies above him.
- 24:52Maria Pena: Oh, and that was that. So, what was the…
- 24:55Tad Eggleston: I think my favorite panel might actually be the… in the next Luba panel.
- 25:05Maria Pena: Yeah, there was… there was some good stuff in there.
- 25:07Tad Eggleston: There were lots of good stuff, but I loved the Casemira leading the…
- 25:13Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:18Marisol: She's great.
- 25:18Maria Pena: a parade.
- 25:22Marisol: And honestly, she's… Way more mature than she should be at that age, honestly.
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 25:29Tad Eggleston: And Venus. Venus and Casimira are the, like, we had to grow up, cause… Well, Mom didn't.
- 25:44Maria Pena: And, yeah, I guess it's,
- 25:47Maria Pena: That seems to be the theme in all the Luba, all the women
- 25:51Maria Pena: I don't know whether it's surname.
- 25:52Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that's kind of what happened with…
- 25:56Maria Pena: With Maria, with Luba, and…
- 25:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Luba guy…
- 26:00Marisol: Sala.
- 26:01Tad Eggleston: Luba got left behind, so…
- 26:04Tad Eggleston: Ophelia had to grow up because she had to take care of Luba. Luba had to grow up because Ophelia really hadn't grown up yet, so, like, sometimes she took care of Luba, and sometimes she was…
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: a teenager, And… and… that's actually, if anything, better than what Petra and… Fritz had with Maria.
- 26:30Maria Pena: Yep. Yeah, there he is.
- 26:32Marisol: They were basically just left alone all day.
- 26:36Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 26:40Tad Eggleston: Or worse, they were.
- 26:41Marisol: Technically.
- 26:42Tad Eggleston: Alone, but she was passed out in the bedroom, so they might as well have been.
- 26:48Marisol: And I still remember that one issue where, Petra and Fritz were little. Right. And I think it was Petra Fell?
- 26:55Marisol: And she was unconscious for, like, the whole day. Yeah. Because Fritz didn't know what to do.
- 27:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 27:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 27:03Maria Pena: And they're… yeah.
- 27:06Maria Pena: They were just dressed in their…
- 27:09Maria Pena: School uniforms and not go to school and all sorts of stuff, yeah.
- 27:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 27:16Maria Pena: Yeah, she was very neglectful, she was horrible.
- 27:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, there's some generational trauma in this family.
- 27:29Marisol: Oh, yes, that is an understatement.
- 27:38Maria Pena: Huh.
- 27:40Maria Pena: And the… did you… did we see the back… the back… did we mention the back cover of this?
- 27:46Tad Eggleston: But then, and I don't know if we've learned this yet, I'm pretty certain that Maria's father…
- 27:57Tad Eggleston: Well, no.
- 28:00Tad Eggleston: Maria's father wound up taking in Maria.
- 28:05Tad Eggleston: after… Maria's mother's husband killed Maria's mother.
- 28:13Maria Pena: Oh, man, no, man.
- 28:15Tad Eggleston: Oh, God.
- 28:17Tad Eggleston: You know, so, I mean, like… It all trickles down.
- 28:24Tad Eggleston: You know, Maria.
- 28:26Marisol: Very long line.
- 28:27Tad Eggleston: Have a great… go of it either. Like, so each generation is better.
- 28:36Tad Eggleston: Which is… which is the way it often works.
- 28:40Maria Pena: Hmm…
- 28:41Tad Eggleston: But, but they started… From some rough… rough places.
- 28:47Tad Eggleston: I do also like this Fortunato…
- 28:49Tad Eggleston: Panel with the car… floating cards.
- 28:53Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 28:57Tad Eggleston: Very statuesque.
- 28:59Maria Pena: Yeah. Joe, that's a mullet he's got.
- 29:02Maria Pena: A heck of a mother.
- 29:11Maria Pena: I'm looking through all the panels, and I think this has a lot of nice panels, but nothing that…
- 29:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, they're…
- 29:21Maria Pena: There wasn't an issue.
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: I wasn't?
- 29:24Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:24Tad Eggleston: As much that, that, that stuck out, stuck out.
- 29:30Maria Pena: Yeah, usually I'll be reading it, I'll be like, oh, that's a good paddle, you know? Yeah.
- 29:35Maria Pena: And I…
- 29:36Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 29:36Maria Pena: Like…
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: They're all good.
- 29:41Maria Pena: Yay.
- 29:42Maria Pena: No, but… Sometimes a panel will just stop you in your tracks and go, oh, there it is.
- 29:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:48Tad Eggleston: But, but in neither one of the…
- 29:51Tad Eggleston: the issues to… well, now, there was… take that back.
- 29:56Tad Eggleston: There is a Jaime panel that sticks out for me.
- 29:59Tad Eggleston: It's… I loved the… the… the one… yeah, the one where it looks like she's on the ropes.
- 30:09Tad Eggleston: Which is really on the bar stools?
- 30:14Marisol: That's a good one.
- 30:17Maria Pena: Well, I like the cameraman POV. I thought that was pretty amazing.
- 30:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's…
- 30:24Maria Pena: Because… because I was like…
- 30:26Maria Pena: it… it kind of suddenly just clicked. I was like, oh, this is black all around, because I was like, why is this… why… why is this black?
- 30:35Maria Pena: The other, you know, outside of the panels, and then I realized, oh, it's the, you know, it's the cameraman's…
- 30:42Maria Pena: View, and all the sounds, all the balloons are outside, on the black, not inside the… because that's…
- 30:51Maria Pena: that's real sound coming from outside of the, the screen… of the camera, you know what I mean?
- 30:58Maria Pena: Because it's separate?
- 31:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 31:01Tad Eggleston: That is… that is really brilliant storytelling.
- 31:05Maria Pena: And, like, some of the… see some of the sound?
- 31:08Maria Pena: Yeah, it's all outside.
- 31:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:13Maria Pena: All the sound of club, bonk, tinkle, that's all happening outside of the camera.
- 31:18Maria Pena: So it is a brilliant story, isn't it? I thought that whole page for me…
- 31:23Maria Pena: But that actually stopped me, I was like, whoa.
- 31:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:29Tad Eggleston: That's, that's a brilliant, brilliant page.
- 31:32Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 31:33Maria Pena: I mean, there were… and there were other things, but yeah.
- 31:38Tad Eggleston: And I think… I think if I was choosing a panel, I love this last one where, where.
- 31:43Maria Pena: Merry Christmas. Who is that?
- 31:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Merry Christmas looks back and is like, oh, were you filming?
- 31:49Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:53Maria Pena: Oh yeah, inside, the action's fantastic, yeah.
- 32:02Marisol: I think mine's gotta be the page… was it page 16, this is? Yes?
- 32:08Marisol: 16, 18?
- 32:10Marisol: Where Maggie's looking through the window at the scene changing.
- 32:13Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 32:14Marisol: Hmm.
- 32:15Marisol: Sid and all them.
- 32:19Maria Pena: Yeah, it was good.
- 32:21Marisol: Just like how Maggie's position never changes.
- 32:25Marisol: But it's just the scene through the window that does.
- 32:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 32:31Tad Eggleston: So…
- 32:34Marisol: Yeah, at the end of the story.
- 32:35Tad Eggleston: this one.
- 32:40Maria Pena: Yeah, that one.
- 32:42Marisol: Yeah, this one.
- 32:45Maria Pena: Yeah, it's pretty… that's very cool.
- 32:49Maria Pena: And it just kind of brings home the point that Maggie's feeling isolated and lonely, and she's…
- 32:56Marisol: Yes.
- 32:57Maria Pena: I think she feels like her life is going nowhere at this point.
- 33:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is definitely a,
- 33:06Maria Pena: It's like…
- 33:07Tad Eggleston: the Saga of Maggie, this is the…
- 33:10Tad Eggleston: The period where she knows least
- 33:14Tad Eggleston: Who she is, what she wants, where she's at.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: She's just kind of going through the motions.
- 33:23Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:24Tad Eggleston: like… like, I mean, she's running this apartment building, but she's not really developing relationships with her tenants.
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean… She's not as connected to the old gang.
- 33:40Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 33:40Tad Eggleston: She's single, you know, just everything's…
- 33:44Tad Eggleston: out of… out of whack for Maggie right now.
- 33:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:50Maria Pena: And then this situation with Vivian, she's confused about it, because she decides.
- 33:57Maria Pena: What do you want to do? And Vivian's like… Oh, bitch.
- 34:07Maria Pena: With, Beto, Mmm.
- 34:16Maria Pena: I think I really like that story with the woman in the bandages in…
- 34:25Maria Pena: Yeah, dunno.
- 34:27Marisol: Oh, the one right at the beginning?
- 34:31Maria Pena: I think, I think that…
- 34:34Maria Pena: panel with her walking down the street. I just did something about that I quite liked.
- 34:42Maria Pena: Yeah, it's just a…
- 34:44Tad Eggleston: So the mummy in the fur coat?
- 34:47Maria Pena: Mommy in the first fur coat, Yeah, I…
- 34:56Maria Pena: You know, it's funny, because that stopped me, and I looked at it, and I went, oh, that's a nice…
- 35:01Maria Pena: But then, now looking at it, I go, well, it's all right, you know, not the usual, like, I usually like a panel with really great storytelling or whatever, but I think… I don't know why, oh, yeah. I do like the duck panel as well, because I think that's hilarious.
- 35:19Maria Pena: I don't know.
- 35:20Maria Pena: I like this story.
- 35:21Tad Eggleston: I think I like… I like the… the… the… Evening gown.
- 35:30Marisol: That is a good look. Shiny.
- 35:32Maria Pena: Shiny evening gown.
- 35:34Tad Eggleston: Well, and ditching the guy in the tuxedo.
- 35:39Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 35:53Maria Pena: Damn.
- 35:57Marisol: I just find it funny, the…
- 36:00Tad Eggleston: Is… is the… It's the mummy?
- 36:03Marisol: the mummy in the evening gown.
- 36:12Maria Pena: Yeah, there are probably better panels in the other one, but I just can't put my…
- 36:18Maria Pena: can't pick. Anyway, yeah.
- 36:23Marisol: Let's see, what is this? Mine might have to be… it's towards the end.
- 36:27Marisol: Like, 2 pages before the back cover.
- 36:33Marisol: It's 3 panels on the bottom, where it's Hector, Petra, and Venus, Oh, so…
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: Other…
- 36:42Marisol: Yeah.
- 36:45Maria Pena: Oh, look at the moment.
- 36:46Tad Eggleston: And the comics and stories.
- 36:49Maria Pena: Yep.
- 36:54Marisol: Sorry, I got my little window minimized, so I can clearly see what comic you guys are on.
- 37:04Maria Pena: I just saw a paddle, actually, that I liked, not because of the panel pedal, but because of the content, but yeah, that one, sorry, the top,
- 37:15Maria Pena: top right, with this. Sometimes I feel like I'm a character in a comic book.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 37:19Maria Pena: I know.
- 37:20Tad Eggleston: Fourth ball breaker.
- 37:20Maria Pena: Yeah. Anyway, I quite like that, but anyway…
- 37:25Marisol: Mine are actually on that same page.
- 37:27Tad Eggleston: So, so the bottom…
- 37:28Maria Pena: 3 here.
- 37:30Marisol: The bottom three, yeah, where they're walking past street magicians that I'm not sure if that's supposed to be Fortunato or not. Yeah, I can't.
- 37:37Maria Pena: You might be.
- 37:38Marisol: But… Hector's talking about how, like.
- 37:42Marisol: That's… that's all nonsense and garbage. Petra's like, oh, I thought Remus might like it.
- 37:48Marisol: And VIN is just like, no, I see you going through all of that.
- 37:55Marisol: Yeah, she says here in the middle one, that's right, I've learned a lot about figuring out secret stuff with you guys trying to sneak things by me.
- 38:03Marisol: And then at the last panel, they decide to go back anyway, and they just… Right. I'm just like, the face that Venus makes…
- 38:08Tad Eggleston: In that last panel.
- 38:12Maria Pena: Venus' space is like, oh, you know, they don't get it. They don't get it.
- 38:17Tad Eggleston: Wrong with you guys.
- 38:18Tad Eggleston: Sucked in by Fortunato.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: Fortunato moment.
- 38:28Tad Eggleston: Fortunato doesn't work on kids.
- 38:31Maria Pena: No, huh.
- 38:38Marisol: Too funny.
- 38:39Maria Pena: Yeah, I forgot about the comic book theme, that was fun.
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, that was… that… that the fourth wall breaking…
- 38:49Tad Eggleston: We're… we're actually in a comic book was… was definitely a fun…
- 38:54Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 38:54Tad Eggleston: twist.
- 38:58Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, and the panel with, with actor between the movies was also quite nice.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: Yes, yes.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: Next week is some Petra Luba, and Fritz.
- 39:12Tad Eggleston: And Luba Comics and Stories?
- 39:16Maria Pena: Yep.
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: And… Lovin' Rockets! We will have…
- 39:24Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's a hell of a cover.
- 39:27Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 39:27Marisol: Oh, my.
- 39:29Maria Pena: Is that, is that easy?
- 39:32Tad Eggleston: Looks like it, doesn't it?
- 39:34Maria Pena: Hmm, but we…
- 39:35Marisol: Yes.
- 39:36Maria Pena: long white hair. Maybe?
- 39:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 39:44Maria Pena: Aww.
- 39:45Marisol: Kinda really hope it is her.
- 39:48Maria Pena: Otherwise, it's a ghoul of some kind that we…
- 39:51Marisol: Right.
- 39:51Maria Pena: I really want to see.
- 39:54Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 39:54Marisol: Some kind of haunted nightmare.
- 39:57Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 40:00Maria Pena: Oh, the dog.
- 40:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that feels very easy.
- 40:04Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 40:06Marisol: Oh, boy.
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: Well, and didn't Maggie used to work at that restaurant?
- 40:11Maria Pena: Yeah, that's, that's…
- 40:12Tad Eggleston: And, and what's her name?
- 40:18Tad Eggleston: The… the… the girl that… the… That dated Ray after Maggie.
- 40:24Marisol: Oh, danita.
- 40:27Maria Pena: Yeah, the data.
- 40:32Maria Pena: Oh.
- 40:35Marisol: This is gonna be a fun one for next time.
- 40:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no.
- 40:38Maria Pena: Yeah, I can see it already.
- 40:41Maria Pena: This girl looks like a…
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: a killer issue.
- 40:45Maria Pena: Yes.
- 40:47Marisol: I'm excited for the spooks.
- 40:50Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 40:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:52Maria Pena: I love it.
- 40:55Maria Pena: It just, fits his booze.
- 40:57Tad Eggleston: And, and we'll have more, more, more Mario.
- 41:02Maria Pena: More meat.
- 41:02Marisol: No, no!
- 41:07Maria Pena: Oh, boy, these are happening.
- 41:10Maria Pena: Jesus.
- 41:11Tad Eggleston: Ew.
- 41:12Marisol: We should save that for next time, though.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: Yep, yep.
- 41:15Tad Eggleston: Well, alright. Well, with any luck next week?
- 41:20Maria Pena: Yep.
- 41:20Maria Pena: We'll be able to…
- 41:22Tad Eggleston: Certainly at some point in the near future.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, thank you guys, and we were nice, tight 45 minutes again, which I know makes Maria happy, because she gets to have her Saturday.
- 41:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It makes Marisol and I happy, because we get to go to bed earlier.
- 41:41Maria Pena: Yeah. Yes. And have dinner, and… Go ahead and have your.
- 41:45Tad Eggleston: I gotta get show notes ready for tomorrow morning.
- 41:48Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 41:48Maria Pena: Oh.
- 41:49Marisol: Fun.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so… Alright, for, the Love & Rockets Book Club, this has been 22 Panels, and we will see you after the next…
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: Next page.
