- 2:49Speaker 2: you need to know if you are a total newbie
- 2:52Speaker 2: on the bike. Cycling has been something that I have
- 2:55Speaker 2: gotten into a lot more over the past couple of years,
- 2:58Speaker 2: logging miles all over the New New York area and beyond.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And when I got into it and we got my
- 3:04Speaker 2: first road bike.
- 3:05Speaker 3: My road bike is a specialized rube.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I yeah, I didn't know a lot at all, and
- 3:11Speaker 2: a lot of the things that we talk about in
- 3:13Speaker 2: today's episode I wish I knew back then. We cover
- 3:17Speaker 2: everything from safety tips and recommendations for a better bike setup,
- 3:22Speaker 2: to the gear that you need, what you should rebring
- 3:25Speaker 2: along with you on your rides in terms of nutrition,
- 3:28Speaker 2: the fun fact about underwear on cycling spoiler alert, you
- 3:32Speaker 2: don't really need it, and so much more. I really
- 3:36Speaker 2: appreciate Allison because she's got like such a.
- 3:39Speaker 3: No bs perspective.
- 3:41Speaker 2: She's super straightforward and she's also super compassionate. She has
- 3:45Speaker 2: gone through plenty of hurdles in her life, including a
- 3:49Speaker 2: traumatic brain injury which we talk about in today's episode.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And I really enjoyed having this conversation.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Of course, if you have any questions about what we

- 4:45Speaker 3: That's it for now. With that, let's get to hurdling today.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm sitting down with Alison Tetric. She is a pro
- 5:04Speaker 2: cyclist and just the woman I need to bring you
- 5:08Speaker 2: so much good info about all things cycling.
- 5:12Speaker 3: How are you doing today, Al, I'm doing great.
- 5:15Speaker 4: It's uh in the morning here still.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I live Minsonoma County, which is some really good cycling area,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and it's a little foggy, so I'm a I'm a
- 5:22Speaker 1: warm weather rider.
- 5:23Speaker 4: It's solar powered, it's waiting, waiting for the sun.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Solar powered. I love that. How long have you been cycling?
- 5:31Speaker 4: So I've raced.
- 5:32Speaker 1: At the you know, UCI World Tour level, think you know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Tour de France for about ten years, and I joined
- 5:39Speaker 1: Specialized about four years ago and found all things gravel
- 5:42Speaker 1: and got a little more gravel in my travel and
- 5:45Speaker 1: race for them. So we're going, you know, twelve thirteen
- 5:48Speaker 1: years strong. I played NCAA tennis, so cycling was not
- 5:52Speaker 1: my first sport. I grew up on a cattle ranch
- 5:54Speaker 1: in California, and just the bike is a great way
- 5:57Speaker 1: to express myself, find free them and explore new places.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Honestly, that is why. So I had dabbled in cycling
- 6:05Speaker 2: for a few years now, but last year during COVID,
- 6:10Speaker 2: cycling became like one hundred percent my outlet. You use
- 6:13Speaker 2: the word freedom like it felt like via my bike,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I had the freedom to just like get out of
- 6:20Speaker 2: the bubble and escape the anxiety that was like so
- 6:23Speaker 2: much of the uncontrollable.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, bike therapy is a real thing, you know, whether
- 6:28Speaker 1: it's alone and you and your bicycle or you and
- 6:31Speaker 1: your girlfriends, it's a bike therapy is a thing, right.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's a real thing. So you talked about growing up
- 6:39Speaker 2: and playing different sports. When did you start to think
- 6:42Speaker 2: that being a more avid rider and perhaps taking this
- 6:45Speaker 2: to the pro level could be something in your wheelhouse?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Frankly, I mean, I've just been working on this project
- 6:51Speaker 1: about heroes creating heroes. And I grew up a little rogue,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, a little wild West out in this ranch.
- 6:57Speaker 1: It was really remote, and my parents are both athletes.
- 7:01Speaker 1: My mom is really competitive tennis players still but she's
- 7:05Speaker 1: pretty title nine, so you know, you just don't think
- 7:07Speaker 1: about that now. But my dad played football for UCLA,
- 7:10Speaker 1: their high school sweethearts, and just kind of growing up
- 7:13Speaker 1: Annie Oakley style out there with no.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Parameters and rules.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So I didn't know, like girls do this and boys
- 7:20Speaker 1: do that, and you know, and then I just picked
- 7:22Speaker 1: up a tennis racket because my mom was and you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: it's following athletes like Serena Williams, who's you know, a
- 7:28Speaker 1: little older than me but still kind of you know,
- 7:30Speaker 1: just breaking through those barriers. And then you know, here
- 7:34Speaker 1: I am, and I'm a professional athlete and Serena's still
- 7:36Speaker 1: like kicking ass and taking names. Like it's amazing to see,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Like how when we can see strong athletes like what happens?
- 7:44Speaker 1: And it was actually my grandfather and he was, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: seventy five at the time, and he's elbowing me and
- 7:50Speaker 1: telling me, I should, you know, try bike racing. And
- 7:53Speaker 1: I thought that was like the dorkiest thing, right, like
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know, like those Neon colors which now are in
- 7:58Speaker 1: but at the time we're not, and like the tight
- 7:59Speaker 1: clash and you know, the big glasses, and I was like,
- 8:03Speaker 1: this is door ky, like I like tennis skirts and
- 8:05Speaker 1: getting my nails done. And he just kept telling me,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and he steered me towards the bike, and I hopped
- 8:11Speaker 1: on a bike and within three months, I'm racing for
- 8:14Speaker 1: the USA national team in Europe. I've podium at the
- 8:17Speaker 1: World Championships and you know, three time gravel World Championships
- 8:20Speaker 1: and all this stuff now and I think it's just
- 8:22Speaker 1: literally knowing that those barriers and gender stereotypes and societal
- 8:27Speaker 1: constructs that don't exist sometimes like if we just keep
- 8:29Speaker 1: flowing through and I fell in love with I think
- 8:33Speaker 1: it's just mainly expressing myself on the bike, Like you
- 8:36Speaker 1: were talking about anxiety, and you can have a lot
- 8:38Speaker 1: of energy, as you can tell, and it's like funneling that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And it was competitive, yes, but I think it was
- 8:45Speaker 1: just really a great experiment and like how far I
- 8:47Speaker 1: could challenge myself, push myself just to be better at something.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I definitely think there's no denying that you must have
- 8:54Speaker 2: had like a certain amount of natural talent, right, I mean,
- 8:57Speaker 2: you don't just hop in a bike and four months
- 8:59Speaker 2: later see the kind of success that you did because
- 9:02Speaker 2: you not that you weren't working hard, but you had
- 9:05Speaker 2: to start with some sort of a baseline here, especially
- 9:07Speaker 2: as a legacy athlete.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Yeah exactly.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I think you know, there was some gift to it,
- 9:11Speaker 1: But I don't think that should be disappointing or you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: too challenging for people like you don't have to always
- 9:16Speaker 1: be naturally gifted at something. And I was reaching some
- 9:20Speaker 1: pitfalls in the first part of my career with some
- 9:22Speaker 1: injuries and I survived to traumatic brain injury, and I'm
- 9:25Speaker 1: just trying to come back and you know, everyone's telling
- 9:28Speaker 1: me what I should do and how I should perform.
- 9:31Speaker 4: And I was really struggling.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And it was talking to Connie Carpenter, who is the
- 9:36Speaker 1: Olympic gold medalist in cycling from nineteen eighty four and
- 9:40Speaker 1: nineteen eighty four is the first year with women were
- 9:43Speaker 1: allowed to race bikes in the Olympics.
- 9:45Speaker 4: How is that possible?
- 9:47Speaker 1: And I am just struggling because you know, with the
- 9:50Speaker 1: pressure we put on ourselves, the pressure we experienced from
- 9:53Speaker 1: others and exceeding expectations.
- 9:55Speaker 4: And I'm going, I don't know if I can do this.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And I was really down, and she said, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 1: you get to wake up every morning and just try
- 10:04Speaker 1: to be better at something like how blessed is that?
- 10:07Speaker 4: You know, like you got to just wake up every
- 10:09Speaker 4: morning and try to be better. And so, yes, there's gifts.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And athletic prowess and all of that, but also for me,
- 10:15Speaker 1: it's just a challenge and what I can do for myself,
- 10:18Speaker 1: Like I don't want to compare myself to others, Like
- 10:20Speaker 1: I want to just do the best I can.
- 10:22Speaker 4: So I think that to me is my love of sport.
- 10:24Speaker 2: The traumatic brain injury caused from a cycling accident or
- 10:28Speaker 2: not caused from a cycling accident, yep.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Traumatic brain injury was in a professional bike race and
- 10:35Speaker 1: life flighted out seizures. And the problem with that is
- 10:40Speaker 1: I came back too soon. You know, this is a
- 10:44Speaker 1: little pre an NFL making concussions like a very prominent discussion,
- 10:51Speaker 1: which is great now, but I had a broken pelvis too,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I can't walk.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of other issues where you
- 10:57Speaker 4: just don't.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Realize that you should be looking at your mental health,
- 10:59Speaker 1: health of your brain, you know, all of that. So
- 11:02Speaker 1: I came back and arguably it was probably one of
- 11:04Speaker 1: my factus years of my career most successful. It was
- 11:08Speaker 1: also one of my most unhappy, like horrible years. And
- 11:13Speaker 1: I just didn't realize that I couldn't read, I wasn't
- 11:17Speaker 1: go mentally functioning and all that. And then I crashed
- 11:20Speaker 1: again at the Pan American Games and just kind of
- 11:23Speaker 1: fluky thing concussion on top of the TBI within eight
- 11:26Speaker 1: months and then it was just lights out where that's
- 11:31Speaker 1: when you're like, I'm not okay, and it's actually we'll
- 11:34Speaker 1: bring it back to the start of our conversation as
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'm sitting in my childhood bed because I can't drive,
- 11:39Speaker 1: I can't function, so I like go back to the
- 11:41Speaker 1: ranch with my parents, right and I'm sitting there and
- 11:44Speaker 1: I remember just staring at that poster Srita Williams still.
- 11:46Speaker 4: On my wall, you know, going to like how am
- 11:48Speaker 4: I back here?
- 11:50Speaker 1: At the time, it was such a low moment where
- 11:51Speaker 1: I couldn't think, like, what was the blessing? You know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: people like, oh, there's a light at the end of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the tunnel. You know, everyone says all those things like
- 11:58Speaker 1: think about the positive. Remember being so angry, being like
- 12:02Speaker 1: there was actually nothing positive about this. Ten years later,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I go, oh no, And when you're that low, the
- 12:08Speaker 1: only way you can go is up. And that's the
- 12:10Speaker 1: only positive I can find now. Still, but it made
- 12:13Speaker 1: me address my mental health. I raced on antidepressants for
- 12:17Speaker 1: a year and then I realized, through you know, therapy
- 12:20Speaker 1: and working on myself that I choose my health over results.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And that's where we go into don't compare yourself to others,
- 12:26Speaker 1: like meet yourself where you're at. Your presence is your power,
- 12:29Speaker 1: you know, things like that, and I firmly believe.
- 12:31Speaker 3: That now, Alison, thanks so much for sharing all of that.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I mean, I think that this is a hot topic
- 12:37Speaker 2: right now in the scheme of professional athleticism and athletes
- 12:41Speaker 2: speaking out about their mental health. Right Like you were
- 12:44Speaker 2: saying you were at the top of your game, but
- 12:46Speaker 2: the lowest that you had felt mentally, And it's just
- 12:50Speaker 2: so important hearing your new stance and all of these
- 12:54Speaker 2: takeaways and clearly to an extent, like they're almost a
- 12:57Speaker 2: mantra for you right now, like you just spewed them
- 13:00Speaker 2: out like one after the one after the one after
- 13:02Speaker 2: the next, you know, like you are so dialed in
- 13:05Speaker 2: on what's important. Like, yes, we're made to feel like
- 13:08Speaker 2: our value in our worth comes with how we associate, right,
- 13:11Speaker 2: so if you're associating as a cyclist and you're performing
- 13:13Speaker 2: well as a cyclist, then everything must be great.
- 13:15Speaker 3: But that's not really how it is at the end
- 13:17Speaker 3: of the day.
- 13:18Speaker 1: No, it's it's not. And I think that's the biggest
- 13:22Speaker 1: you know, look at the Olympics. You know, these takeaways
- 13:24Speaker 1: we get from these incredible athletes that you know, athletes
- 13:27Speaker 1: aren't robots, but you don't even have to be a
- 13:29Speaker 1: professional athlete to not be a robot. None of us
- 13:31Speaker 1: are right, you know, And it's about it's like, yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 1: just really honing in on where you are in that
- 13:38Speaker 1: moment and what you can do with your your power.
- 13:40Speaker 1: And sometimes that's saying no and you know, getting rid
- 13:43Speaker 1: of toxic relationships, not putting expectations on yourself.
- 13:46Speaker 4: And other times it's.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Challenging and going for the metal or you know, finishing
- 13:52Speaker 1: your first marathon or something, you know, and I think
- 13:54Speaker 1: that's super cool. And I learned, I mean to take
- 13:58Speaker 1: some therapy, but it was identify myself as just an
- 14:01Speaker 1: athlete and I'm not. I'm you know, cowgirl, I'm a daughter,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I'm a biochemist, I'm an entrepreneur. You know, I'm a founder,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I'm all these things. Once I didn't just identify myself
- 14:12Speaker 1: as an athlete as a cyclist, I actually performed better.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I was happier. And then finding that life balance was
- 14:19Speaker 1: really key. So that's something I always talk to people
- 14:23Speaker 1: that maybe they want to pursue a professional career in
- 14:26Speaker 1: sports or just in life too. Right, we have a
- 14:28Speaker 1: hard time sometimes balancing that. And I realized I don't
- 14:30Speaker 1: want to miss baby showers anymore, and you know, weddings
- 14:34Speaker 1: and unfortunately funerals, right like you you want to find.
- 14:37Speaker 4: That life balance where you're not as sterile.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And there's a saying like happy athletes go faster, you
- 14:42Speaker 1: know type thing, and I think that's true what you.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Pointed out about finding your sense of self worth and
- 14:48Speaker 2: understanding that you are so many things that can carry
- 14:51Speaker 2: you beyond just these instances of injury. When it comes
- 14:54Speaker 2: to identifying your purpose and your why, it will also
- 14:57Speaker 2: help you thrive and like all the other relationships that
- 14:59Speaker 2: go hand in hand with all the other ways that
- 15:01Speaker 2: you identify.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Exactly exactly, and it's just about yeah, purpose of your why,
- 15:06Speaker 1: which we'll get into. Put that as one of my
- 15:09Speaker 1: talking points for later, is you know, remembering your why
- 15:11Speaker 1: and then also knowing that that's totally fluid sometimes, like
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's okay to change your mind, like you're fixated on
- 15:18Speaker 1: a century and the weather looks bad, or you know
- 15:20Speaker 1: your family life is in chaos, like maybe just toges
- 15:23Speaker 1: your why for a second and that's okay too, right.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I think that's really important.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Definitely definitely.
- 15:30Speaker 2: So, I mean, wow, your story is incredible and I'm
- 15:33Speaker 2: so grateful to have you here, not only to touch
- 15:36Speaker 2: on that, but then also to dive into what we're
- 15:39Speaker 2: really here to talk about today, which is talking about
- 15:42Speaker 2: best practice tips for new cyclists. So you have a
- 15:45Speaker 2: ton of experience under your belt before we really get
- 15:48Speaker 2: into the nitty gritty.
- 15:50Speaker 3: If you reflect right now about your.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Initial days cycling, before you realize maybe just how obscenely
- 15:56Speaker 2: talented you were, is there anything that you wish someone
- 16:00Speaker 2: told you right off the bat that you know now?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Oh man, So I now biker shorts, like is a
- 16:07Speaker 1: thing which is really funny to me, right, like you
- 16:10Speaker 1: could buy in it. I don't know, like this is
- 16:12Speaker 1: what they're wearing, right, but not like actually cycling shorts is.
- 16:16Speaker 1: They're called biker shorts, which I think is funny. I
- 16:18Speaker 1: always thought they were a little long. So I I
- 16:22Speaker 1: got some cycling shorts. I bought them at you know,
- 16:24Speaker 1: Big five or something, and I rolled them up because
- 16:26Speaker 1: I was used to tennis and I wanted I was
- 16:27Speaker 1: worried about panlines. And now looking at those photos, I'm
- 16:31Speaker 1: like wearing like a sports fra rolled up shorts, rolled
- 16:35Speaker 1: down short socks.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Totally fun.
- 16:40Speaker 1: But now I'm thinking about the sun damage on my back, Like,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I mean, why was I riding around for hours on
- 16:45Speaker 1: end getting sunburned, and my first bike race, I didn't
- 16:50Speaker 1: one of the rules for USA Cycling, you know, our
- 16:53Speaker 1: governing body. So if you want to go to a
- 16:54Speaker 1: bike race, like one of the rules different different to
- 16:57Speaker 1: triathlon is you have to have a jersey with sleep
- 17:01Speaker 1: But I didn't own one. And I was visiting my
- 17:03Speaker 1: grandparents in Colorado, and so I wore one of my
- 17:06Speaker 1: Grampy's jerseys and I put it on, I zip it up,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and I get to the start line. And so pedals
- 17:14Speaker 1: are a thing we'll talk about, but you clip into
- 17:16Speaker 1: your pedals where you have to just you know, move
- 17:19Speaker 1: your ankle to unclip from it. And I was really
- 17:22Speaker 1: uncomfortable with the fact of being clipped into my bike,
- 17:25Speaker 1: so I didn't know how to clip in. I was
- 17:26Speaker 1: terrified to clip out because I just would spontaneously fall
- 17:29Speaker 1: over it, you know, traffic lights and things. So I'm
- 17:34Speaker 1: at the start line in my first race wearing my
- 17:36Speaker 1: like grampees, like Colorado State champion, my ship jersey, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'm sitting there and I'm just going, Okay, Alison, you're
- 17:43Speaker 1: gonna clip in, You're gonna put your pedal your foot
- 17:46Speaker 1: down and you're going to clip it and then you're
- 17:47Speaker 1: gonna pedal, and I'm like, what if I fall over?
- 17:49Speaker 1: And like Domino, all these women like what's going to happen?
- 17:52Speaker 1: And I'm getting I'm like so nervous and I'm so
- 17:54Speaker 1: ready to race. And then the you know, referee or
- 17:58Speaker 1: you know, whatever commis there, says and he points at
- 18:02Speaker 1: me and he's like, her number is on backwards. So
- 18:05Speaker 1: like also, like, you pin your number and it should
- 18:08Speaker 1: read a certain way, but I pinned it where I
- 18:09Speaker 1: could see it, but then when you're on your bike,
- 18:11Speaker 1: it's the wrong way. And so there's my my grandparents
- 18:15Speaker 1: coming like, oh, we'll get it, and I'm, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: twenty four to twenty five years old, like have my
- 18:20Speaker 1: grandma like be fixing my number?
- 18:22Speaker 4: And everyone in the start line is just like, oh god,
- 18:24Speaker 4: she's never done this before.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And then sure enough the race goes and I can't
- 18:29Speaker 1: clip in, and I'm like stamping my foot down. I
- 18:31Speaker 1: don't want to fall, and the race is gone, and
- 18:33Speaker 1: I look up at my grandpa and he's like.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Just go like, but I can't clip in. He's like
- 18:38Speaker 4: it doesn't matter. But it was a good experience.
- 18:41Speaker 2: It was a good experience. It was a good experience,
- 18:43Speaker 2: and it was your first experience. And I think an
- 18:45Speaker 2: important thing that we need to say as we go
- 18:47Speaker 2: on in this conversation is don't judge that start too harshly, right, Like,
- 18:51Speaker 2: it's a start for a reason. The fact that you're
- 18:53Speaker 2: willing to put yourself out there and try something new,
- 18:55Speaker 2: whether it's cycling or you know, it could be anything.
- 18:58Speaker 2: That's a really exciting moment for you to be a
- 19:00Speaker 2: beginner because you only get to be a beginner once
- 19:03Speaker 2: and reflect on these stories and hopefully look back and
- 19:05Speaker 2: like laugh a fair amount. So, Okay, we learned clipping
- 19:09Speaker 2: in can be tough.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah, don't fall over, but yeah, that can be really tough.
- 19:16Speaker 4: And I agree, Like.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm jealous, like I've done in this sport long
- 19:19Speaker 1: enough now where I'm like, oh wow, I'm a.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Veteran, and.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I'm sometimes jealous of beginners, you know, when you have
- 19:26Speaker 1: that fire in your belly and no sense of failure yet,
- 19:30Speaker 1: And I'm always like, oh, man, she's a fighter and
- 19:34Speaker 1: she's never failed, Like she's never been life lighted out
- 19:37Speaker 1: of a canyon, she's never followed her at the grocery
- 19:39Speaker 1: store she's never like, oh wow, and you missed that part, right,
- 19:43Speaker 1: You're that innocence of just starting and going as hard
- 19:47Speaker 1: as you can and not knowing your limits because unfortunately,
- 19:49Speaker 1: I've you know, met some of my limits in my career.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So and then it goes to start lines too, and
- 19:56Speaker 1: I think that's an important topic. Is sometimes I think
- 19:58Speaker 1: we glorify finish lines too much. You know, how did
- 20:01Speaker 1: you do? Like what was your place versus were you
- 20:04Speaker 1: brave enough.
- 20:04Speaker 4: To just start?
- 20:06Speaker 1: You know, like I think that's like super impressive to me,
- 20:08Speaker 1: is like people picking a goal and starting, like isn't
- 20:12Speaker 1: that like? And maybe sometimes you can't finish and that's
- 20:15Speaker 1: okay too, But we always try and glorifying the start
- 20:18Speaker 1: lines because those are really hard, you know, like you're
- 20:20Speaker 1: putting your neck on the one.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, what a beautiful takeaway. I love that start.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Glorifying the start lines is going to be the new
- 20:27Speaker 2: the new catchphrase for the.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Start lines, like isn't it great?
- 20:31Speaker 1: Like we all like because at that point you're all together, right,
- 20:34Speaker 1: there's no finish yet, you know, you're all just embarking
- 20:36Speaker 1: on this thing like a challenge or I don't want
- 20:39Speaker 1: to say journey that sounds awful arm, but you know
- 20:42Speaker 1: you're starting on this and everyone has different expectations and
- 20:45Speaker 1: I think those are really beautiful to celebrate.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Definitely, definitely.
- 20:49Speaker 2: So Okay, we talked about your clothing mishaps, so maybe
- 20:53Speaker 2: let's kick start this there as well, talking about what
- 20:56Speaker 2: we need to know about gear when it comes to
- 20:59Speaker 2: wanting to become more regular cyclist.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Bibs are a cycling must have. And I know bibs
- 21:06Speaker 1: are kind of weird. So for those that don't know
- 21:08Speaker 1: or do no, like, there's shorts and then there's bibs
- 21:10Speaker 1: and bibs. To me, they have I calm suspenders and
- 21:13Speaker 1: I know that's not the appropriate thing, but they they
- 21:16Speaker 1: kind of pull up over your shoulders and cycling shorts
- 21:19Speaker 1: and bibs have padding on your but you know, for
- 21:25Speaker 1: more comfort and a good set of bibs. They are expensive,
- 21:28Speaker 1: but they're really worth it. And then women sometimes go
- 21:31Speaker 1: a lit bibs. I do the shorts. I don't know,
- 21:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna go real on this is muffin top is
- 21:38Speaker 1: a thing.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You know.
- 21:39Speaker 1: The shorts like cut in your stomach and bibs like
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's a smooth transition because there's no like cinch around
- 21:44Speaker 1: your waist, so it's nice when you lean over. You know,
- 21:47Speaker 1: everything's like compressed. It's very comfortable for heat and sweat
- 21:51Speaker 1: as well as I think esthetically it looks good and
- 21:55Speaker 1: then you get worried about having to pee because you know,
- 21:58Speaker 1: the shorts are easier just to pull down. But I
- 22:01Speaker 1: race for specialized but they have like I call it
- 22:04Speaker 1: free to pee, and I know it's not called that,
- 22:05Speaker 1: but it has a little magnetic thing in the back
- 22:08Speaker 1: where you can just kind of drop tail and you're
- 22:10Speaker 1: able to go to the bathroom without completely disrobing, which
- 22:13Speaker 1: is nice. But comfort on the bike is big. If
- 22:16Speaker 1: you're not comfortable, you don't enjoy riding. And I think
- 22:20Speaker 1: that's like a big thing because I think some women
- 22:22Speaker 1: and men, you know, you start riding and you're not comfortable,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and then you're kind of like, hey, this sport might
- 22:27Speaker 1: not be for me. But you know, if you can
- 22:29Speaker 1: dial in the comfort factor, which I have a few
- 22:30Speaker 1: other tips on, I think that's a really cool thing.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I actually love suspenders free short, but I agree with
- 22:38Speaker 2: you that I do think that this silhouette can be
- 22:41Speaker 2: like just like that, like extra, Like I want to say,
- 22:44Speaker 2: like skims level of flattering when you go with like
- 22:48Speaker 2: the suspenders style. So to each their own. I also
- 22:51Speaker 2: love a cycling short that has cargo pockets. That's like
- 22:54Speaker 2: my like goldilocks. Find that it's not always easy to
- 22:58Speaker 2: find that like perfect pocketed bibs, but I will in
- 23:02Speaker 2: the show notes to this episode, I'll throw a couple
- 23:04Speaker 2: of links into my favorite styles.
- 23:06Speaker 3: You also mentioned comfort being key.
- 23:08Speaker 2: What other tips do you have about being more comfortable
- 23:11Speaker 2: on the bike as a newbie.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so every body's different, So my bike fit isn't
- 23:15Speaker 1: going to look like your bike fit. And that's why
- 23:18Speaker 1: going to a professional that has seen a lot of
- 23:20Speaker 1: athletes and has experience in that space will be really
- 23:23Speaker 1: beneficial because, let's be real, pressure points on a bike
- 23:27Speaker 1: are pretty key. So you got undercarriage pressure, hands, feet,
- 23:31Speaker 1: and so how you set yourself up on that bike
- 23:33Speaker 1: will really dictate how much you enjoy writing it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I love the phrase undercarriage like such a like politically
- 23:40Speaker 2: correct nice way to be.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Like your ass is going to kill you if you
- 23:44Speaker 3: don't take care of it.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Like you don't want to like experience birth control
- 23:49Speaker 1: via the bike.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Right, definitely definitely not okay? So a couple of things
- 23:54Speaker 2: to be mindful of when it comes to comfort. We
- 23:56Speaker 2: talked about your gear and your setup. We also talked
- 23:59Speaker 2: about your bike fit. Something else that I think is
- 24:01Speaker 2: really important, which you had referenced in your first race
- 24:04Speaker 2: as being a faux pas, is having good socks.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Why are socks important?
- 24:10Speaker 1: I love the socks for I think the compression actually helps.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I don't wear long compression socks, but I wear like
- 24:17Speaker 1: a mid calf length. And then you're sweating a lot.
- 24:20Speaker 1: If you think about it, it's it's similar to running.
- 24:23Speaker 1: But if there's a lot of sweat, a good pair
- 24:25Speaker 1: of shoes works well.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Carbon soles.
- 24:28Speaker 1: You're really connected to the bike, So a good pair
- 24:30Speaker 1: of socks mixed with a good pair of shoes, like
- 24:33Speaker 1: I think it's just about that connection to the bike.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And then you don't want swamp foot, right, so you
- 24:40Speaker 1: just want like a cycling socks are thinner than you think,
- 24:42Speaker 1: and I think buying a good pair of socks with
- 24:44Speaker 1: paired with the shoes and the petals, it really makes
- 24:48Speaker 1: sense for that feel. And one tip that might seem
- 24:52Speaker 1: awkward to people, back to the bibs real quick. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: use shammy butter, but it's a shammy cream and it's
- 24:58Speaker 1: weird because it's just kind of an anti chafing caream.
- 25:02Speaker 1: You put back to that undercarriage thing and that really helps,
- 25:06Speaker 1: like you know, lubricate things are moving around and you're
- 25:08Speaker 1: not chafing when you do those, you know, whether it's
- 25:11Speaker 1: just spin class around the road.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And something else to point out here, which I it
- 25:15Speaker 2: took me like months of cycling before someone told me
- 25:17Speaker 2: this that you're not supposed to wear underwear with your bibs.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Oh, I forgot to bring that up. Correct, do not
- 25:24Speaker 4: wear underwear? You have the diaper.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I call it a diaper sy I'm not making this
- 25:28Speaker 1: sound very glamorous, but you got the pad and I
- 25:30Speaker 1: always just like kind of feel like you're wearing a diaper.
- 25:33Speaker 4: So I don't do underwear.
- 25:36Speaker 1: And then this might be TMI, but if you're on
- 25:38Speaker 1: your period or menstruating, I actually just tend to not
- 25:42Speaker 1: put anything in because that could also cause uncomfort and
- 25:46Speaker 1: so you just wash your clothes. I don't know if
- 25:48Speaker 1: that might be too much.
- 25:50Speaker 3: That's what I do.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I mean to use their own right. Do we know,
- 25:53Speaker 2: like why we're not supposed to be wearing underwear with
- 25:55Speaker 2: cycling bibs.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Cycling bibs are designed kind of with the built in underwear,
- 26:00Speaker 1: with the paddy the contours to deal with everything that's
- 26:03Speaker 1: going on whether you're male or female down there. And
- 26:07Speaker 1: if you do underwear, what happens is you're just causing
- 26:10Speaker 1: like you're taking away what the bib or the show
- 26:13Speaker 1: what was designed for and you're adding more like clothing folds,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and that can cause that chaping, rubbing, little raw spots.
- 26:19Speaker 4: So I think it's just letting the clothing do what
- 26:22Speaker 4: it was designed to do.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 26:30Speaker 2: about my sponsor at Gooder.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I'm going to be honest.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I lent a pair of my Gooder sunglasses to one
- 26:37Speaker 2: of my best friends when he was here last week,
- 26:41Speaker 2: and he may or may not have accidentally taken them,
- 26:44Speaker 2: and I am feeling absolutely lost.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I realized in gifting these glasses accidentally to my friend
- 26:53Speaker 2: that I am beyond obsessed with Gooder.
- 26:57Speaker 3: And here's why.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Gooder sunglasses are super super lightweight and they are no bounce,
- 27:05Speaker 2: all polarized and perfect for whatever activity I have on deck.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I have tried so many active geared sunglasses. In my
- 27:14Speaker 2: day and these literally don't move an inch, whether I
- 27:18Speaker 2: am gently jogging along in brooklyn Bridge Park or running
- 27:23Speaker 2: to catch the subway. Plus they have shapes and styles
- 27:27Speaker 2: for everyone. My go to the operation blackout. I'm also
- 27:31Speaker 2: a huge fan of the nine dollars pore over, but
- 27:34Speaker 2: so many different looks for whatever your mood is.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Of course I have a deal for you.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Get fifteen percent off your purchase today by heading to
- 27:42Speaker 2: Gooder dot com slash kurdle and using the code hurdle
- 27:45Speaker 2: one five at checkout. Again, head on over to Gooder
- 27:48Speaker 2: dot com sgo dr dot com slash hurdle and use
- 27:53Speaker 2: hurdle one five at checkout for fifteen percent off.
- 28:03Speaker 3: So now we may have blown your mind.
- 28:05Speaker 2: If you're listening to this, do not wear underwear with
- 28:08Speaker 2: your cycling bibs.
- 28:10Speaker 3: We talked about comfort.
- 28:11Speaker 2: What else is something that new cyclist should be paying
- 28:14Speaker 2: attention to?
- 28:17Speaker 4: You know?
- 28:18Speaker 1: The one thing I think is just like bit like
- 28:19Speaker 1: safety checks, like make sure your bike is working properly,
- 28:23Speaker 1: whether you're making friends with the mechanic at your local
- 28:27Speaker 1: bike shop or hiring somebody you know. There's mobile services.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It could be a partner, a friend, but we're traveling
- 28:34Speaker 1: on these bicycles that you know, relatively high speeds and things.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Can go wrong.
- 28:38Speaker 1: It's held together by bolts, and it's carbon fiber most likely,
- 28:43Speaker 1: And so making sure your bike is properly set up,
- 28:46Speaker 1: functioning and safe once again more enjoyable and a better experience.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 28:52Speaker 2: And you brought you brought up a buzz phrase here
- 28:54Speaker 2: which we should tap into real quick, which is saying
- 28:56Speaker 2: that most likely your bike is carbon fibers. So there
- 28:59Speaker 2: are going to be different types of bikes that you
- 29:02Speaker 2: can get, especially as a beginner. The first thing that
- 29:04Speaker 2: I will say is, of course they come at all
- 29:07Speaker 2: different price points, in a wide variety, with a wide
- 29:10Speaker 2: variety of options. But generally speaking, you know, a bike
- 29:14Speaker 2: that might be smoother for you to ride is certainly
- 29:17Speaker 2: going to start to get up there in price as well.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I mean, I think the sport as a whole certainly
- 29:21Speaker 2: has like a steep entry point when it comes to
- 29:24Speaker 2: cost associated with it. So for newbies that are trying
- 29:26Speaker 2: to perhaps select their first bike, what would you say
- 29:30Speaker 2: to them in terms of things to look for, what
- 29:32Speaker 2: to keep in mind?
- 29:34Speaker 1: I mean, I think it depends what your purpose of
- 29:37Speaker 1: the bike is whether you want a hybrid bike, you know,
- 29:40Speaker 1: mountain bike to road bike kind of hybrid, more comfortable
- 29:43Speaker 1: fit traditional road bike, you know, think the little skinny
- 29:47Speaker 1: tires and drop bars. I ride a lot of gravel,
- 29:49Speaker 1: which I think gives me some flexibility to ride wider tires,
- 29:53Speaker 1: so I feel safer. I can take it off road,
- 29:56Speaker 1: I can take it on road not lose any sort
- 29:59Speaker 1: of kind of speed feeling. But then I feel safer
- 30:02Speaker 1: with you know, potholes and manhole covers, you know, because
- 30:05Speaker 1: I have wider tires. So I think what you're looking
- 30:07Speaker 1: for is it's what's your purpose, Like what's your goal?
- 30:09Speaker 1: You know, do you want to compete in a triathlon?
- 30:12Speaker 1: Do you want to do a century? Just commute to work?
- 30:15Speaker 1: I mean, there's a bike for everything. And then when
- 30:17Speaker 1: you look across the brand, just know what kind of
- 30:19Speaker 1: price point you want, and you know it's there's a
- 30:21Speaker 1: there's a right bike for you and to not be
- 30:23Speaker 1: intimidated by it. But the you know, the barrier to
- 30:26Speaker 1: entry is quite high, but it's worth it because once
- 30:28Speaker 1: you have it, it's a great investment and it lasts
- 30:31Speaker 1: for a really long time. Is we go back to
- 30:33Speaker 1: taking care of.
- 30:34Speaker 2: It, Yeah, for sure. And I love the idea that
- 30:38Speaker 2: you articulated. Which is so important is that know what
- 30:41Speaker 2: you want to do with your bike, right, Like, there
- 30:43Speaker 2: are so many different things and places that you can
- 30:45Speaker 2: go on two wheels, whether it is just staying on
- 30:47Speaker 2: the road or going on gravel, or maybe you want
- 30:50Speaker 2: to go mountain biking. So knowing exactly what your purpose is,
- 30:53Speaker 2: even like a commuting bike, it might be a pick
- 30:57Speaker 2: that you're also going to be riding road with that's
- 30:59Speaker 2: a very different bike than what you might choose if
- 31:01Speaker 2: you want to be like getting a lot of fitness
- 31:04Speaker 2: and going out on long road rides and stuff like that.
- 31:06Speaker 2: So all these super important questions to ask yourself, and
- 31:10Speaker 2: don't be afraid, I would say to like go into
- 31:13Speaker 2: your local bike shop and articulate all of these to
- 31:15Speaker 2: them because this is what the people that work there.
- 31:18Speaker 2: They hear these things all the time, and they're going
- 31:20Speaker 2: to have the intel and then know how to help
- 31:22Speaker 2: you choose the right bike that's going to be right
- 31:25Speaker 2: for you.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I mean I think as far as like for women too,
- 31:30Speaker 1: sometimes it's intimidating to walk into a shop, which you know,
- 31:33Speaker 1: sometimes it's a bunch of dudes working at and you
- 31:36Speaker 1: know you're asking about wearing underwear with your shorts or
- 31:39Speaker 1: not right, And the same thing goes to when you're
- 31:41Speaker 1: finding a bike, like don't be afraid just to say
- 31:44Speaker 1: what you want. And then also that's where the bike fit.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Make sure you're buying the right bike that's the right
- 31:48Speaker 1: size for you, and not because there's a flash sale
- 31:51Speaker 1: you got to buy this bike that make you too
- 31:52Speaker 1: big or too small for you. So making sure it
- 31:54Speaker 1: serves your purpose, and kind of going back to what
- 31:57Speaker 1: you want out of the bike, and then knowing you
- 31:59Speaker 1: can always get to know.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Something else I'd love to touch on with you is
- 32:03Speaker 2: talking about nutrition on the bike. It's an interesting subject,
- 32:06Speaker 2: right because whereas with running they say that you don't
- 32:10Speaker 2: really need to really think about fluids. If you're running
- 32:13Speaker 2: for under i'd say like forty five or sixty minutes
- 32:15Speaker 2: on the bike, that changes like real fast. So talk
- 32:19Speaker 2: to me about, you know, some of the things that
- 32:21Speaker 2: you've learned about fueling on the bike, and maybe some
- 32:23Speaker 2: of the advice that you'd offer to the hurdlers.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yep, so I'm sorry, apparently I'm on a mantra phase today,
- 32:31Speaker 1: but something I say when I'm on my bike is
- 32:33Speaker 1: eat and drink early and often, and or you can
- 32:37Speaker 1: that works for you, eat and drink early and often,
- 32:39Speaker 1: or sip sip, nibble nibble, which I just have a
- 32:44Speaker 1: rule for myself, Like I have a lot of apparently
- 32:47Speaker 1: mantras and rules, but you know, every time I get
- 32:50Speaker 1: on my bike, I have a purpose, you know, whether
- 32:52Speaker 1: it's learning how to ride in a straight line, cornery better,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know, having therapy, you know, Like I always have
- 32:58Speaker 1: a purpose, kind of like you do in yoga, which
- 32:59Speaker 1: is super weird because I don't do yoga at all.
- 33:01Speaker 1: So when it comes to nutrition, I have a rule
- 33:04Speaker 1: that's one bottle an hour and then eat and drink
- 33:07Speaker 1: early and often. And once you push past that hour barrier,
- 33:10Speaker 1: if you haven't fueled appropriately, you're really going to start
- 33:12Speaker 1: paying the price. So, depending on your body size and
- 33:16Speaker 1: your intensity level, eating and drinking early and often is
- 33:19Speaker 1: always good. I personally usually have a goal about two
- 33:22Speaker 1: d and fifty calories an hour, so I can put that
- 33:25Speaker 1: in my bottle. In the form of electrolyte, I use goog.
- 33:28Speaker 1: You know, there's lots of options out there on the market,
- 33:31Speaker 1: and you can also eat a snack, bar, a gel
- 33:34Speaker 1: depending on your intensity.
- 33:35Speaker 4: But I used to when I first.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Started, like hav an alarm on my little bite computer
- 33:39Speaker 1: to like remind me to drink because like, you know,
- 33:42Speaker 1: you start and everyone feels like world champion, right and
- 33:44Speaker 1: you start, you're at the race, you write your friends,
- 33:47Speaker 1: you forget, you're like I guess talking or going hard.
- 33:50Speaker 1: And then like later you get two hours in, you're
- 33:53Speaker 1: you're dehydrated, and you're you burn through some most of
- 33:56Speaker 1: your GLC engine stores. So it's it's about just keeping
- 33:59Speaker 1: that consistent blood sugar and however you do that, whether
- 34:02Speaker 1: it's in your bottle and a snack or or whatever.
- 34:05Speaker 2: So funny, right, because everyone has like a feeling strategy
- 34:08Speaker 2: that works for them. I feel like on the bike,
- 34:10Speaker 2: I get thirsty like pretty quickly, and they always say, like,
- 34:14Speaker 2: when you're thirsty, that's like a big sign obviously that
- 34:16Speaker 2: you need to take in liquids. But for me, I'm
- 34:19Speaker 2: totally with you on the co signing like early often
- 34:23Speaker 2: I'm a huge fan of like taking a bike ride
- 34:25Speaker 2: to somewhere where it's like there's a strategic treat insight.
- 34:29Speaker 2: So if you like give me a donut, twenty five
- 34:31Speaker 2: miles in. I'm like, yes, actually, I would love to
- 34:35Speaker 2: do that.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I am totally a treat based athlete of destination right ba.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Oh my god, I'm gonna maybe I'm gonna have to
- 34:42Speaker 2: change my Instagram bio treat based athlete.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Yes, I'm like donut, oysters, san fere like a beer
- 34:49Speaker 1: or you know. Oh, I live in Sonoma County. I
- 34:53Speaker 1: mean there's really cool places to go ride my bike.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I mean amazing. Yeah, I'm like, find me a donut.
- 34:59Speaker 2: You're like, I'll take a half dozen oysters and maybe
- 35:01Speaker 2: like a glass of wine and then we'll wait like
- 35:03Speaker 2: thirty minutes and we'll get back.
- 35:04Speaker 3: On the bike.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I've done that.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I support it.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a big fan of the mid ride
- 35:09Speaker 2: beer as well, which I'm carbs, Carbs. I'm not advocating
- 35:13Speaker 2: for drinking and cycling. I'm just saying, like a halfler
- 35:15Speaker 2: full beer isn't going to you'll be okay, I promise you.
- 35:18Speaker 3: I promise you do not take this as medical advice.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Let me make sure that. Yeah. But okay, So we
- 35:28Speaker 2: talked about nutrition fuel early. If you'll often find the
- 35:31Speaker 2: stuff that works for you in my bottles, I usually
- 35:34Speaker 2: keep one bottle of just water and the other bottle.
- 35:38Speaker 3: I'm a huge fan of Element they are a sponsor
- 35:40Speaker 3: of the show. But I love a salty sip.
- 35:42Speaker 2: It's like exactly what I want when I'm out there
- 35:44Speaker 2: and it's hot and I'm dripping and all the things.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Do you have any go to? What fuel do you use?
- 35:51Speaker 1: I am sponsored by Doo Energy Labs, so I use
- 35:54Speaker 1: their electrolyte and gels, and then I raise some really
- 35:57Speaker 1: long events.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Gravel racer now, so my events can be you know,
- 36:02Speaker 4: ten twelve hours. So I start like I do when the.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Intensity is high, I go for the you know gels,
- 36:08Speaker 1: the you know, choose, you know, think about all that,
- 36:10Speaker 1: like kind of straight cards, straight sugar.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And then as the race leaves, you know.
- 36:16Speaker 1: And goes into the four, six, seven, eight hours, I
- 36:18Speaker 1: start getting hungry. So I make snacks or I do
- 36:22Speaker 1: have pizza in my feed zones or sandwiches. I make
- 36:25Speaker 1: this little sandwich called it a little stinky. Yeah, it's
- 36:29Speaker 1: a Hawaiian sweet roll, some butter, some cheese, salamie and
- 36:33Speaker 1: a pickle. Love that and it's like it's savory. I'm
- 36:36Speaker 1: a savory person. So after my I call it like
- 36:38Speaker 1: race cut. You know you've had all the sweets and
- 36:40Speaker 1: you just start wanting. So you said you'll have the
- 36:42Speaker 1: salty stiff like one hundred percent agree, And I start
- 36:45Speaker 1: craving a little more complex food. Also, your intensity after
- 36:50Speaker 1: that duration isn't full like we call it full gas
- 36:52Speaker 1: like it's not.
- 36:54Speaker 4: You know, you're you're starting to kind of find your groove.
- 36:56Speaker 4: You probably by yourself. You start getting kind of hungry.
- 36:59Speaker 4: So I think a little more protein helps me on that. Yeah.
- 37:02Speaker 4: And then the other key though to that too is
- 37:03Speaker 4: like I use a camelback Chase beest for when I'm
- 37:06Speaker 4: not on the road, when I'm on off.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Road, which is a hydration pack like when you're scared
- 37:09Speaker 1: and it's technical if you're off road or you know
- 37:11Speaker 1: you're going to have a rock. So like I just
- 37:13Speaker 1: have a little straw and that helps me do the
- 37:14Speaker 1: zipsip nibble nibble thing.
- 37:16Speaker 3: The sip sip nibble nibble, the sip sip nibble nibble patent.
- 37:19Speaker 2: That Yeah, Nutrition gear, finding the right bike fit. Safety.
- 37:24Speaker 2: We touched on that buzzword before, so let's give that
- 37:26Speaker 2: a little bit more love at the moment.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Uh, certainly, I.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Would say at all times, but especially for new riders
- 37:33Speaker 2: as you start to get your footing and get more
- 37:35Speaker 2: comfortable on your bike, it's a really great tip to
- 37:37Speaker 2: get out there with a friend or a companion that
- 37:40Speaker 2: you could share the ride with.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Not only because if you happen to get a flat tire.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Or something, that there's someone to share in that experience
- 37:46Speaker 2: with you and hopefully help you get back on your feet,
- 37:49Speaker 2: but also because you want to make sure that if
- 37:52Speaker 2: something were to happen, like a crash, that you have
- 37:54Speaker 2: backup in someone to give you a hand. And plus,
- 37:57Speaker 2: like not to downplay the importance of like having some
- 38:00Speaker 2: one to be with in case you get a little
- 38:01Speaker 2: bit lost.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Yeah, training partners are key, you know, we're talking the
- 38:08Speaker 1: CM Solar Power treat base and also social based in
- 38:11Speaker 1: the sport. You know, somebody to get you out the
- 38:13Speaker 1: door is nice too. It's eight thirty ety to lead
- 38:16Speaker 1: by thirty, but you're like on Instagram. Training partners help
- 38:19Speaker 1: with that safety once again too. We'll talk always where
- 38:21Speaker 1: your helmet. My helmet has an Angie sensor in there
- 38:24Speaker 1: that if I do ash and you know that impact
- 38:28Speaker 1: and then go to an emergency contact, which is my
- 38:31Speaker 1: partner and my phone, which is super cool for the
- 38:34Speaker 1: safety and then also sometimes like it's it's just really
- 38:39Speaker 1: nice to be with people, but also if you get
- 38:41Speaker 1: lost or if something happens. And I have hitchhiked only
- 38:44Speaker 1: a couple of times because usually I don't train alone
- 38:46Speaker 1: that often.
- 38:47Speaker 4: I like to have people around.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that your helmet has that technology, and
- 38:51Speaker 2: it a lot of other like popular either wearables like
- 38:54Speaker 2: Garmin or I know like by computers will also have
- 38:57Speaker 2: features that you can set up where if you were
- 38:59Speaker 2: to experience to crash, than someone like your emergency contact
- 39:02Speaker 2: will also get a notification. So super super important to
- 39:05Speaker 2: do this kind of recon before you get out there,
- 39:08Speaker 2: just so that you can put yourself in the best
- 39:09Speaker 2: possible position. Not that we want anything to happen to you,
- 39:12Speaker 2: but should something happen to you, that you will be
- 39:14Speaker 2: in contact asap with the people that know that something's up.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Something else that I think is important for us to
- 39:21Speaker 2: touch on as well. Building up your stamina. Right like,
- 39:25Speaker 2: as you're a new writer, I can feel really intimidating.
- 39:27Speaker 2: You see people maybe on your strawva or whatever you're
- 39:30Speaker 2: looking at, that are doing these fifty one hundred mile
- 39:32Speaker 2: bike rides.
- 39:33Speaker 3: And you're like, I'm never going to be able to
- 39:34Speaker 3: do anything like that.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Again, we said earlier in this episode, like, don't judge
- 39:38Speaker 2: your beginnings too harshly. What would you say to this
- 39:42Speaker 2: athlete as they're starting out on getting more comfortable in
- 39:45Speaker 2: the bike and slowly building up that mileage.
- 39:49Speaker 1: I think it's what we also touched in on the
- 39:51Speaker 1: beginning was finding your why, and I think that's really
- 39:55Speaker 1: important because when you had your goal and it's your
- 39:58Speaker 1: goal and not somebody else's goal, then you're going to
- 40:01Speaker 1: be more inspired to chase and pursue that goal.
- 40:04Speaker 4: And so it's it's.
- 40:05Speaker 1: About taking the steps forward, progress, taking care of yourself
- 40:09Speaker 1: and building that stamina. And it doesn't happen overnight. But
- 40:13Speaker 1: if the goal kind of makes you clutch your teeth
- 40:15Speaker 1: and there's a determination and like make your heart flutter,
- 40:18Speaker 1: it's probably the right goal. But it's about giving yourself
- 40:21Speaker 1: that grace as you as you pursue that, and it
- 40:24Speaker 1: takes time, and you know, coaches can really help or
- 40:26Speaker 1: Google is a great guide too. I mean, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 1: if you don't want to you spot a bike, and
- 40:31Speaker 1: if you don't want to buy a coach too.
- 40:32Speaker 4: I get it, but I need to.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Like for me, it was about finding my why, and
- 40:38Speaker 1: sometimes that wasn't what society told me it should be.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Like if you're all your friends are doing a triathlon
- 40:43Speaker 1: and you don't want to, then you know, pick something else.
- 40:46Speaker 4: It makes you excited, and.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Then you know having that plan and knowing that I'm
- 40:50Speaker 1: I'm a biokeevist by trade, and the best thing about
- 40:53Speaker 1: endurance sports is that direct relationship to a lot of
- 40:56Speaker 1: times the time you put in and your performance. So
- 40:59Speaker 1: as you keep just a little bit of time increasingly,
- 41:02Speaker 1: your stamina is going to keep increasing. Of course there's
- 41:05Speaker 1: a overtraining dipping over the edge, but you know what
- 41:08Speaker 1: I mean, like think a nice steady increase where you
- 41:12Speaker 1: know anything is possible, and just giving yourself that time
- 41:15Speaker 1: and that.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Plan definitely, and something else has totch on you mentioned before,
- 41:19Speaker 2: like with what you were wearing and wearing a proper
- 41:21Speaker 2: cycling jersey instead of just wearing a sports bra. I
- 41:23Speaker 2: be mindful that you're going to be out there for
- 41:25Speaker 2: a while, likely regardless of what level yet you're at.
- 41:28Speaker 3: So sunscreen is.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Super super important, especially if you do want to try
- 41:33Speaker 2: and I stress the word try to avoid that ever
- 41:36Speaker 2: lovely cycling shorts convenient tamline.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Well, I do the fade so when I do train alone, like,
- 41:44Speaker 1: I roll up my shorts a little bit, roll them down,
- 41:46Speaker 1: so the fade. But I love sunscreen. I put it
- 41:49Speaker 1: on like face, obviously my whole body. And luckily, if
- 41:54Speaker 1: you get nice cycling kit, it has usually upf fifty.
- 41:57Speaker 1: You know, it's it's.
- 41:58Speaker 4: Trying to protect you. So they do a good job
- 42:00Speaker 4: with that.
- 42:01Speaker 1: But the tan lines, the sock ones are the worst
- 42:03Speaker 1: because I do like those mid calf and then you
- 42:06Speaker 1: know you're going to a wedding and you frigin have
- 42:09Speaker 1: like you know.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and the short sleeve fad, the sock faith, it's everywhere,
- 42:12Speaker 2: it's everywhere. Okay, before I let you go, anything else
- 42:15Speaker 2: that we haven't touched on just yet that you think
- 42:17Speaker 2: is important for us to bestow on relatively new cyclists.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think we've covered so much. You
- 42:24Speaker 1: make everything so approachable and that's what we all love
- 42:27Speaker 1: about you. And taking something the sounds complex, but just
- 42:31Speaker 1: to remember, you know, we've been riding bikes since we
- 42:34Speaker 1: were kids, and it's it's enjoyable and it should be fun.
- 42:38Speaker 1: And like I said, if you're riding bikes, you're doing
- 42:40Speaker 1: it right. And it could be an e bike, it
- 42:42Speaker 1: can be a hybrid, mountain bike, gravel road, you know,
- 42:45Speaker 1: whatever your goal is for that, and it can be intimidating,
- 42:50Speaker 1: but you know, like we could just jump in and
- 42:53Speaker 1: do these things, and I fine, it's just like riding
- 42:55Speaker 1: a bicycle and then not being afraid to ask questions,
- 42:58Speaker 1: you know, and get the internet is great, your local
- 43:03Speaker 1: bike shop. Emily's always obviously like an expert in the
- 43:07Speaker 1: field here of making things approachable. So I think that's
- 43:11Speaker 1: about what you find that exploration and expression through two
- 43:14Speaker 1: wheels is such a powerful experience.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Oh, you're so good to me.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I think what you just said there about not being
- 43:20Speaker 2: able to ask questions, it's kind of my mantra and
- 43:23Speaker 2: what I've really adopted as I've carried on in this
- 43:26Speaker 2: podcast journey. It's I remember before I started podcasting that
- 43:31Speaker 2: I would listen to this one show in particular where
- 43:33Speaker 2: the host asked a lot of the questions that I had,
- 43:36Speaker 2: and I think so often we get like a little nervous,
- 43:39Speaker 2: so afraid, right, Like we're a little nervous to admit
- 43:42Speaker 2: that we have this question that we think that we're
- 43:43Speaker 2: supposed to have the answer to. So when it comes
- 43:46Speaker 2: to like my approach with interviewing guests, sometimes I feel
- 43:49Speaker 2: like I have to go back to basics so that
- 43:50Speaker 2: I can get the answers that I would have wanted myself.
- 43:53Speaker 2: And the same goes of course, as we're talking about
- 43:55Speaker 2: here with cycling addressing. You know, don't be afraid to
- 43:59Speaker 2: ask for help, helper, go to the bike shop, befriend them,
- 44:02Speaker 2: be cool with them. Like I used to have a
- 44:04Speaker 2: guy uptown Rob that like I felt like whenever I
- 44:06Speaker 2: was coming through, he like knew that I was coming
- 44:08Speaker 2: through with some sort of perhaps super novice, but great
- 44:12Speaker 2: question that I needed answering. So reaching out to people
- 44:16Speaker 2: like your version of Rob at your bike shop obviously
- 44:19Speaker 2: dming someone like Allison, I'm sure she'd be happy to
- 44:22Speaker 2: help you with your questions. But finding community in that
- 44:25Speaker 2: you don't have to have all the answers right away,
- 44:27Speaker 2: that's really important, right, like you're not supposed to you're
- 44:29Speaker 2: not going to. And again on that note of not
- 44:32Speaker 2: judging your beginnings too harshly, like don't judge yourself for
- 44:36Speaker 2: not knowing all the answers.
- 44:38Speaker 4: No, you never.
- 44:38Speaker 1: I mean look at life, like, we never know all
- 44:40Speaker 1: the answers, right, And I'm a professionalman doing this a
- 44:43Speaker 1: long time, and i still make mistakes, you know, so,
- 44:46Speaker 1: But I think though it's about yeah, not I think
- 44:49Speaker 1: sometimes in sport, and you know, it's about women. I
- 44:51Speaker 1: think supporting women too, I mean, and not putting what
- 44:54Speaker 1: we do on this pedestal that's unapproachable, like, yeah, we
- 44:57Speaker 1: can ride real fast, real hard, We're good at what
- 44:59Speaker 1: we do. But I mean, it's just riding bikes, man Like,
- 45:03Speaker 1: just like you could be a CEO of a company.
- 45:04Speaker 1: It's just running a company. It's you know, managing good people.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Like there's there's things around this, right.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Like come on, So the moral of the story is
- 45:13Speaker 2: talk to friends about riding your bike, have fun riding
- 45:16Speaker 2: your bike, and you can literally do whatever the hell
- 45:18Speaker 2: you put your mind to.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Any treats, Like that's the best part of riding bikes,
- 45:22Speaker 1: the treats and the snack stops, right, Like, here's why
- 45:25Speaker 1: we ride period.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Oh my god, al And this was so fun to
- 45:29Speaker 2: chat up with you, and we're definitely gonna have to
- 45:32Speaker 2: get a ride in the books. Our our mutual friend
- 45:34Speaker 2: Kelly and I were talking about a possible trip for
- 45:37Speaker 2: me out to California, maybe at the end of October,
- 45:40Speaker 2: so we'll look into that. We'll catch up. How do
- 45:43Speaker 2: the hurdlers follow along with you for more inspiration? How
- 45:45Speaker 2: do they keep up with you? Give me all the details?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Oh, perfect, Well, you can follow me on all things
- 45:50Speaker 1: the Internet's Instagram's great, it's a lot of cycling and
- 45:54Speaker 1: I don't know bike adventures. My handle is at am
- 45:58Speaker 1: tetric am et ur ic k. And also just look
- 46:04Speaker 1: at the links in the bio because my COVID sourdough
- 46:07Speaker 1: Bread was making bandanas and selling them for scholarships for
- 46:13Speaker 1: female identifying athletes to race bikes here for Nika's Norcow
- 46:17Speaker 1: High School Cycling League. So we've done five scholarships already
- 46:20Speaker 1: and I only have a few bandanas left. One is
- 46:22Speaker 1: a total cowgirl, so you'll recognize that, and of internal summer,
- 46:26Speaker 1: and then we were talking about being treat based. The
- 46:28Speaker 1: other pattern is a Paisley pattern with everything why I
- 46:31Speaker 1: love riding bikes, which, by the way, Emily has a
- 46:33Speaker 1: donut on it, pizza, whiskey and lama and flowers because
- 46:39Speaker 1: this is like what I love about riding bikes is
- 46:41Speaker 1: all the things I get to see and enjoy it.
- 46:43Speaker 4: I love it.
- 46:44Speaker 3: I love it.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, so we'll definitely plug that in the show notes.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Definitely click on over there, get yourself a bandana, and
- 46:51Speaker 2: do some good. I'm over at Kurdle Podcast and at
- 46:54Speaker 2: Emily a Body Another hurdle conquered.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Catch you guys next time.
