- 0:00Speaker 1: The hump of the hill. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 0:06Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. I always say this on Wednesday,
- 0:09Speaker 1: so I'm going to say it again. If today is
- 0:12Speaker 1: the home day for you, the middle of the week,
- 0:14Speaker 1: you know, I hope you get over that rise.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:16Speaker 1: For those of you for whom Wednesday is the end
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the work week, good on you. Good for you,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and hope you enjoy the next couple of days. And
- 0:23Speaker 1: for those of you for a well, maybe Wednesday's the
- 0:26Speaker 1: start of the work week, hope it gets off to
- 0:29Speaker 1: a good start. It's the midway part for us, and
- 0:33Speaker 1: US of course includes.
- 0:34Speaker 2: The producer of the program, Cameron d. Parker.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for the football
- 0:43Speaker 1: team that his father has great fan interest in, and
- 0:48Speaker 1: Cameron too, even though both are simarily disgusted by them
- 0:51Speaker 1: right now, the Dallas Cowboys. So it's Cameron Dallas Parker.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It's not Cameron Dodgers Parker. Wouldn't be that. I was
- 0:59Speaker 1: kind of taking a peak at the Dodger game today
- 1:01Speaker 1: when you when he walked in there, because I know
- 1:03Speaker 1: how you are. You you could care nothing about the
- 1:05Speaker 1: team in La. It's the key when it comes to baseball.
- 1:08Speaker 1: It's the team in Arlington that has your interest. And hey,
- 1:10Speaker 1: they won last night too. Nothing got another great pitching performance.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, two runs they scored will not get it done.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I was trying to be the optimistic one for you there. Anyway,
- 1:26Speaker 1: They the Rangers did get to win last night. Uh,
- 1:30Speaker 1: the the Indiana Pacers got another win. They're now up
- 1:35Speaker 1: three games to one on the New York Knicks. Did
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember, did you pick them to win
- 1:41Speaker 1: this series?
- 1:43Speaker 3: I don't know if I had an official pick. I
- 1:45Speaker 3: felt like it was going to go seven, and it
- 1:46Speaker 3: looks like it's going to go five in favor of Indiana.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well, we'll see Alla Nick's two back on our home floor.
- 1:53Speaker 1: But obviously their their their backs are against the wall
- 1:56Speaker 1: on that Speaking of backs against the wall, same for
- 1:59Speaker 1: the Dallas Stars now backs against the wall, down three
- 2:03Speaker 1: games to one, like the team I group. For the
- 2:07Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes, they played to night, their backs against the wall.
- 2:09Speaker 1: They're down three games to one as well. So it
- 2:12Speaker 1: looks like all these series are just starting to neatly
- 2:16Speaker 1: wrap up and tie up and be done, including the
- 2:19Speaker 1: one for your team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, who go
- 2:23Speaker 1: for the throat tonight, they try to finish off the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Western Conference Finals series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And you must be feeling good about that.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I would imagine, yeah, I mean, Anthony and Wards and
- 2:36Speaker 3: then t Wolves are They're such a good team, so
- 2:38Speaker 3: you know, until o case he gets it done. I mean,
- 2:40Speaker 3: I feel good about Thunder winning tonight, but these are
- 2:45Speaker 3: two really good basketball teams here in Neo. Minnesota's gonna
- 2:48Speaker 3: be fighting to the last tonight, so it's gonna be
- 2:51Speaker 3: a fun game, but definitely being at home. I like
- 2:53Speaker 3: our chances of taking down and advancing to the back
- 2:56Speaker 3: to the NBA Finals.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Okay, all right, let me tell you what we have
- 3:00Speaker 1: on the program today. There's some things to get to
- 3:04Speaker 1: and uh, there's a couple of real interesting uh things.
- 3:10Speaker 1: One would be and this is we'll have you hear
- 3:15Speaker 1: parts of it in all three hours of the show
- 3:17Speaker 1: because it's it's it's kind of some protracted, uh conversation
- 3:22Speaker 1: and doings and things like that.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But but here's why.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm talking about Greg Sanking, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.
- 3:29Speaker 1: As we know the SEC meetings are ongoing, uh, have
- 3:35Speaker 1: been ongoing. And we heard from the commissioner yesterday when
- 3:41Speaker 1: he talked about, you know, this whole all for one
- 3:44Speaker 1: one for all things being kind of silly and all
- 3:46Speaker 1: that other kind of stuff. But today uh, and and
- 3:51Speaker 1: he was he was rather non committal in the and
- 3:55Speaker 1: it was audio from Monday. It was late Monday afternoon
- 3:59Speaker 1: when he came out, so we ran it on yesterday's program,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and he was rather noncommittal as to the direction and
- 4:09Speaker 1: what they might do with regard to the college football playoff.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And this is a very important part of this because
- 4:16Speaker 1: I know a lot of you who are long worn
- 4:18Speaker 1: fans or other SEC fans really have an interest in this.
- 4:24Speaker 1: There are many who are very curious about the eight
- 4:26Speaker 1: game SEC conference schedule format which they've been under, or
- 4:33Speaker 1: the possibility of a nine game schedule, and they're varied
- 4:39Speaker 1: opinions on it. The coaches certainly are not much in
- 4:44Speaker 1: favor of the nine game schedule. They would rather play
- 4:47Speaker 1: that fourth non conference game. I think athletic directors probably
- 4:53Speaker 1: don't mind having the ninth game. Fans certainly seem to
- 4:57Speaker 1: want the ninth conference game. And I'll tell you who
- 5:01Speaker 1: else wants the ninth conference game? The conference commissioners of
- 5:06Speaker 1: the other leagues with regard to the possibility of expansion
- 5:12Speaker 1: of the college Football playoff too, and we figured this
- 5:15Speaker 1: might be the case to sixteen teams that it might happen.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And it almost seems to be a situation of we'll
- 5:29Speaker 1: give you this if you give us that, meaning the
- 5:33Speaker 1: other conference commissioners really want there to be a nine
- 5:38Speaker 1: game conference schedule in the SEC. And I know a
- 5:42Speaker 1: lot of you, and when I first read it at
- 5:44Speaker 1: first glance, it goes, what businesses are the theirs? Why
- 5:47Speaker 1: do they care whether the SEC plays eight or nine? Well,
- 5:50Speaker 1: the answer is quite simple, really, when I've thought about it,
- 5:52Speaker 1: the answer is pretty simple. If you're playing nine games
- 5:57Speaker 1: in conference play in the SEC, the odds are greater
- 6:04Speaker 1: that they're going to be more losses for SEC teams
- 6:09Speaker 1: instead of playing whatever Louisiana Monroe or you know whatever,
- 6:14Speaker 1: or especially as most of the SEC teams do play
- 6:18Speaker 1: FCS opponents the Western Carolinas and Samford's of the world
- 6:23Speaker 1: and some of the other ones. But you know that
- 6:28Speaker 1: the odds are greater that that's going to happen. So
- 6:30Speaker 1: therefore it might open the door for some of the other.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So the debate is twofold whether there is latitude for
- 6:42Speaker 1: adding a ninth conference game as it relates to the
- 6:47Speaker 1: possibility of an expanded playoff, and the model that is
- 6:52Speaker 1: being discussed a bit of the past twenty four hours
- 6:57Speaker 1: is called a five plus eleven model.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Do you know what that is?
- 7:00Speaker 1: Cam If I just just threw that out there, the
- 7:02Speaker 1: five plus eleven, do you know what that is?
- 7:05Speaker 2: The five automatic bids? Or well, yeah, yes, they would
- 7:12Speaker 2: be automatic. Uh huh. It is the five.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Highest ranked conference champions so that would include a group
- 7:23Speaker 1: of five or now they're saying G six plus eleven
- 7:27Speaker 1: at large. The coaches like it. Athletic directors not so much.
- 7:34Speaker 1: They want more guaranteed bids for their leagues. The coaches
- 7:37Speaker 1: are like, look, it's on our shoulders if there's eleven
- 7:40Speaker 1: at large bids out there, and if we didn't win
- 7:44Speaker 1: our conference championship, but we're right up there near the top,
- 7:47Speaker 1: or maybe we're the third best, but we have a
- 7:51Speaker 1: chance to get in. So they apparently are for this.
- 7:55Speaker 1: The athletic directors not so much. And then there's the commissioner,
- 7:58Speaker 1: Greg Sankie, who has to listen about sides and then
- 8:01Speaker 1: get people together. So he has some interesting takes on this,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and so we'll hear some things from him today. There's
- 8:10Speaker 1: there's some other topics that we're going to get to well,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and of course, as always, we welcome your input on
- 8:17Speaker 1: our text line. All you have to do is text
- 8:20Speaker 1: the word Texas follow by your question or comment to
- 8:24Speaker 1: eight one five three zero. So you text the word
- 8:27Speaker 1: Texas and then your question or comment to eight one
- 8:30Speaker 1: five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And I said this down the stretch of yesterday's show,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and if you were tuned in laid in the show,
- 8:41Speaker 1: you would have heard it, if not understandable, And here's
- 8:44Speaker 1: where I'm repeating it today. For whatever reason, May twenty eighth,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I don't know why, but May twenty eighth is National
- 8:53Speaker 1: Hamburger Day. So what we're asking you is what is
- 9:01Speaker 1: the where or what under what circumstances could be restaurant
- 9:05Speaker 1: or burger join or a picnic or a barbecue or
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know whatever. I violated my own rule just in
- 9:12Speaker 1: by the way, barbecue is a now not a verb,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so you know it's a at a at a cookout.
- 9:22Speaker 2: What what was the best burger you ever had?
- 9:26Speaker 4: Right me?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm asking for everybody and for their input. The
- 9:30Speaker 1: best burger you ever had was, and you fill in
- 9:34Speaker 1: the blank. It could be, Oh, I had it at
- 9:36Speaker 1: a whatever at a burger joint in Minneapolis, or I
- 9:41Speaker 1: or I had it at whatever a place downtown in Austin,
- 9:45Speaker 1: or I had it, you know, in San Antonio, or
- 9:47Speaker 1: I had doubt wherever it can be that it could
- 9:50Speaker 1: also be, Hey, the best burger I ever had was
- 9:52Speaker 1: one my dad cooked up in the backyard cookout. We had,
- 9:56Speaker 1: you know whatever, The best hamburger you ever had was?
- 10:00Speaker 1: And you can say when I was at Summer Camper,
- 10:03Speaker 1: when I was at a burger joint at such and such.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So I want to know that because today is National
- 10:10Speaker 2: Hamburger Day. Do you know yours? I put the question
- 10:13Speaker 2: to you yesterday. Do you know your yours? I do.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Oh, there's this place out close to Lake l b J.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I think it's close to Marble Falls, me a little
- 10:26Speaker 3: bit closer to in between Marble Falls in burn It.
- 10:31Speaker 3: It's this little cafe out side of this road, and
- 10:36Speaker 3: it was the best hamburger experience I've had in my life.
- 10:39Speaker 3: The bun the fries, the meat, like the whole, the
- 10:42Speaker 3: whole shebang.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Wow, But you don't remember the name of the place.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I always forget. I tell people about it all the time.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I gotta look it up.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Cam will try to look that up.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But you can let us know on the tax line.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Best hamburger you ever had was and was when I
- 10:57Speaker 1: leave the blank, Like I said, that can be a day,
- 11:01Speaker 1: a time, a place, Vally Cafe, Hoover's Valley Cafe Valley,
- 11:07Speaker 1: Hoover's Valley Cafe. Okay. See, now when I get home,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna open up my Texas Atlas gazetteer
- 11:16Speaker 1: and find Hoover's Valley because you say it's out by
- 11:19Speaker 1: Lake LBJ.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I have to find that.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's technically in burning Okay, it's a technically okay,
- 11:24Speaker 1: all right, well all right, so yeah it can be.
- 11:29Speaker 1: It can be a place, but it doesn't necessarily have
- 11:31Speaker 1: to be just the particulars. Best burger you ever had was.
- 11:34Speaker 1: You can say when I was at blah blah blah,
- 11:36Speaker 1: or it was at such and Schutzburger place, whatever it
- 11:40Speaker 1: might be.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Okay, we'll get to all that today.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Is also a yacht rock Wednesday, and we'll bump back
- 11:47Speaker 1: with some yacht rock for you this afternoon. And we
- 11:51Speaker 1: have inconceivable this afternoon as well, so we'll get to
- 11:53Speaker 1: all that and more here on a Wednesday afternoon. Happy
- 11:57Speaker 1: as always to have you with us here on thirteen
- 11:59Speaker 1: under the zone.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Back to the Craig Way Show. Connect with Craig through
- 12:06Speaker 5: the text line by text team so eight one five
- 12:09Speaker 5: three zero followed by your message. The standard message and
- 12:13Speaker 5: data rates may apply.
- 12:15Speaker 1: As I mentioned that, you know today being National Hamburger Day,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you know, the answers obviously would be varied. Like I said,
- 12:24Speaker 1: it can include the place where you got it if
- 12:26Speaker 1: you want, didn't have to, but it can uh and
- 12:30Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be a hamburger that you can
- 12:33Speaker 1: get today. The question was the best hamburger you ever had? Was? Was?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Can include the past for a burger joint that no
- 12:43Speaker 1: longer exists?
- 12:45Speaker 2: It can?
- 12:46Speaker 1: It can be a place that isn't around anymore, but
- 12:48Speaker 1: it happened to be the best one you ever got.
- 12:49Speaker 2: You just hadn't had one that was that good since then.
- 12:52Speaker 1: An example of that might be one text who said,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and I don't remember this because I wasn't living in
- 12:59Speaker 1: austin the eighties. But they said, but duncles on Barton Springs.
- 13:04Speaker 1: But duncles on Barton Springs in the eighties was my fave.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I get that. I remember you used to it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Used to be able to get a really good burger
- 13:12Speaker 1: on Barton Springs. Maybe it was on Riverside when filling
- 13:18Speaker 1: station over there. Somebody else said, grins in San Marcos.
- 13:24Speaker 2: So that's a good call.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And somebody some of my favorite every time is Chris
- 13:28Speaker 1: Madrids and San Antonio on the corner of Hollywood and
- 13:31Speaker 1: Blanco since nineteen seventy seven. Well done, Rob, well done.
- 13:35Speaker 1: So that's it's quite simple. Today is National Hamburger Day.
- 13:39Speaker 1: So the question is to you. And I brought this
- 13:42Speaker 1: up yesterday and I said, we're not going to do
- 13:43Speaker 1: this till tomorrow. Oh, somebody else said, I just happened
- 13:47Speaker 1: to say it was just randomly naming towns, and I said, Minneapolis. Well,
- 13:52Speaker 1: sure enough, we get one that says Matt's Bar in Minneapolis,
- 13:58Speaker 1: home of the juice. See Lucy. Some of the best
- 14:03Speaker 1: hamburgers you can get are at a bar. Some of them,
- 14:07Speaker 1: there's no question about some of the best. Some of
- 14:09Speaker 1: the there's there's a place in Omaha that's right up there.
- 14:16Speaker 1: For me, it's about as good as just about anyone
- 14:20Speaker 1: any any burger place I've been to, and and folks
- 14:23Speaker 1: who have been to Omaha enough for the College World
- 14:26Speaker 1: Series have probably been to this place. It's called Dinkers
- 14:31Speaker 1: Dinker's Pub, and it's a deal kind of like hop
- 14:36Speaker 1: dotty where you walk to the back whatever and make
- 14:40Speaker 1: an order your burger. Then you go and sit down
- 14:42Speaker 1: and they call you come and get it. And it's
- 14:43Speaker 1: cash holding at that place, at at Dinkers.
- 14:47Speaker 2: So it's near.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It's I think at thirtieth and right where I forty
- 14:52Speaker 1: eighty comes in. It's not far. It's not far from downtown.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So the Longhorns do make it back to Omaha, I
- 15:00Speaker 1: probably will make a make a pilgrimage over there to
- 15:05Speaker 1: Denkers Deker's Pub over there to get one. But anyway,
- 15:08Speaker 1: that's the question, is today being National Hamburger Day, the
- 15:13Speaker 1: best hamburger you ever had was? And it can be
- 15:17Speaker 1: a place, it can be a time frame, whatever you
- 15:21Speaker 1: want it to be. Just want to know the best
- 15:24Speaker 1: hamburg you ever had was so one and so forth. Okay,
- 15:27Speaker 1: what is the best formula for college football for the playoff,
- 15:29Speaker 1: what's the best formula for conference championship deciding games, What's
- 15:36Speaker 1: the best formula for how many conference games you would play?
- 15:39Speaker 1: All of these questions and others are being pondered at
- 15:42Speaker 1: the SEC Spring meetings. And here's the first part of
- 15:45Speaker 1: this with the Commissioner Greg Sankie yesterday and talking about
- 15:48Speaker 1: the five plus eleven model. That's five highest ranked conference
- 15:53Speaker 1: champions and the next eleven ranked highest ranked teams. That's
- 16:00Speaker 1: that's one model. There are several out there, but you'll
- 16:03Speaker 1: hear him talk about this because he seems to kind
- 16:05Speaker 1: of favor at least the coaches he's had the conversations
- 16:07Speaker 1: with him.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Here's the Commissioner, Greg sanking.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Welcome to Destin.
- 16:20Speaker 6: It's always my annual trip to the beach where I
- 16:22Speaker 6: actually never experienced the beach, so I put on pullovers
- 16:26Speaker 6: because the ruins are cold. We actually I leave here
- 16:30Speaker 6: and start with student athletes and then we start in
- 16:32Speaker 6: the morning and we'll finish on Thursday afternoons. This our
- 16:35Speaker 6: second year being a little bit more efficient. Play issues
- 16:38Speaker 6: on the table, talk about football scheduling during the week,
- 16:41Speaker 6: talking about the college football playoff, talk about and see governance,
- 16:44Speaker 6: talk about if there is a settlement, what that might
- 16:47Speaker 6: look like, and the work that's been done to prepare
- 16:49Speaker 6: for if the settlement has approved, probably any other number
- 16:54Speaker 6: of issues, tie breakers and women's basketball type breakers and
- 16:57Speaker 6: men's basketball. As a result, a lot of conversation about
- 17:01Speaker 6: should we moved to a perminent site for a softball
- 17:04Speaker 6: tournament in the future.
- 17:07Speaker 4: In preparing for what's ahead next year.
- 17:10Speaker 6: So with that, I'll stop, since tomorrow's introduction will be
- 17:16Speaker 6: much longer, I'm certain.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Let's see what you want to talk about.
- 17:23Speaker 7: Can you explain, as you see at the pros the
- 17:26Speaker 7: upsides to a playoff format with multiple aques versus a
- 17:30Speaker 7: playoff format where all of it would be decided via
- 17:33Speaker 7: atlor solution.
- 17:35Speaker 6: No, not three purposes here, there's a lot attributed to
- 17:40Speaker 6: me that is not at this moment attributable to me.
- 17:44Speaker 6: To our athletics directors met three weeks ago. Look to
- 17:48Speaker 6: set of formats we have interest in, some, we're not
- 17:52Speaker 6: committed to any particular format I have over time talked
- 17:57Speaker 6: about And let's just have the film in the blank.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Number of best teams that goes back to twenty nineteen
- 18:05Speaker 6: twenty twenty playoff expansion. I reiterated that I think our
- 18:12Speaker 6: room has an interest in a different model. We'll see
- 18:14Speaker 6: how that conversation manifest itself this week, and we'll look
- 18:18Speaker 6: a little bit more deeply at different ideas, which will
- 18:22Speaker 6: put me at some point in a better position to
- 18:25Speaker 6: answer those questions.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Would you elaborate on you said our room as interested
- 18:29Speaker 7: in a.
- 18:29Speaker 6: Different model, different models. Yeah, our athletics director's room in
- 18:33Speaker 6: particular went back to early May when we had a
- 18:37Speaker 6: meeting where we focused on some different ideas.
- 18:39Speaker 4: So we'll bring back some more information for them to
- 18:42Speaker 4: take a look at it.
- 18:43Speaker 8: Is it a case where you want to present one
- 18:46Speaker 8: or several models to your presidents at the end of
- 18:49Speaker 8: this And.
- 18:51Speaker 6: I think it's incorrect to simply focused on the college
- 18:54Speaker 6: football playoff at this moment, at least our existence, we've
- 18:57Speaker 6: been talking about football schedule within our own league. I
- 19:02Speaker 6: think last year, for example, is a really good experiment.
- 19:06Speaker 6: If you go back to last year at this time,
- 19:08Speaker 6: they said in the year had we're gonna have an
- 19:10Speaker 6: expanded playoff, We're gonna have an expanded conference, We're gonna
- 19:13Speaker 6: play in eight teams and excuse me, an eight game
- 19:16Speaker 6: schedule with those sixteen teams, we're going to learn.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Some things, and so we did.
- 19:23Speaker 6: But one of the things we learned is you're not
- 19:26Speaker 6: going to divorce your regular season schedule from college football
- 19:29Speaker 6: playoffs selection.
- 19:29Speaker 4: In fact, I think there's more of a.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Feeling that regular season scheduling is governed by.
- 19:36Speaker 4: College football playoff selection.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Witness the discontinuation of the series. This isn't about This
- 19:44Speaker 6: isn't critical Troy. It's critical of the reality that, hey,
- 19:49Speaker 6: you can drop a big series and it's not gonna
- 19:52Speaker 6: hurt you come selection time. You have a team to
- 19:56Speaker 6: play four games against teams with six and six records
- 20:00Speaker 6: last year that got in. Another team didn't play. Really
- 20:04Speaker 6: anybody at the top of its conference was selected in,
- 20:07Speaker 6: and it's clear that not losing becomes in many ways
- 20:12Speaker 6: more important than beating the University of Georgia.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Which two of our teams were left out. Nobody had
- 20:18Speaker 4: that kind of quality win.
- 20:19Speaker 6: So and yet I think you can't just like run
- 20:23Speaker 6: down a college football playoff selection idea without thinking about, well,
- 20:27Speaker 6: we play it or nine games, what are the impacts.
- 20:29Speaker 6: That's the depth of analysis we're looking at. We also
- 20:32Speaker 6: look at and we'll go through this tomorrow. Are whether
- 20:37Speaker 6: people want to agree with that or not, that's up
- 20:39Speaker 6: to them. We can go through the analytics and show
- 20:42Speaker 6: the rigor of our schedule is different than anyone else's period,
- 20:47Speaker 6: and we had a learning session in September the CFP
- 20:51Speaker 6: about strength of schedule, and strength of schedule isn't everything,
- 20:53Speaker 6: but it is an important factor.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I remember very clearly.
- 20:57Speaker 6: One of the messages was, if you play the top
- 21:00Speaker 6: ranked team in the hundred and thirtieth ranked team, those
- 21:02Speaker 6: two games average out to.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Sixty five and a half. If you play sixty five
- 21:06Speaker 4: and sixty six.
- 21:08Speaker 6: To average out to sixty five and a half, And
- 21:11Speaker 6: so the advisor said, just as well playing sixty five
- 21:14Speaker 6: and sixty six. Here's my problem. But for maybe one,
- 21:18Speaker 6: maybe two teams in a year, we don't have sixty
- 21:21Speaker 6: five or sixty six, and everybody else has a group
- 21:24Speaker 6: it's sixty and below that has to be considered by
- 21:29Speaker 6: us and making our schedule.
- 21:31Speaker 4: By the CFPS.
- 21:33Speaker 6: The CFP itself in evaluating selection criteria, and while I
- 21:40Speaker 6: one voice asking for that kind of clarity and information,
- 21:45Speaker 6: that hasn't exactly changed the crpia as it now exists.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Four provided clarity on how they're apply.
- 21:52Speaker 9: Greg, what are your thoughts on among the formats that
- 21:55Speaker 9: have been discussed among your athletic records. One of those
- 21:58Speaker 9: is four at an act qualifiers for the SEC and
- 22:01Speaker 9: also for the Big ten. And the critics out there
- 22:04Speaker 9: who are the last month or two have said that
- 22:07Speaker 9: that marginalizes your other Cower conference brother, and than the
- 22:10Speaker 9: ACC and Big twelve in addition to the other conferences.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Where are your thoughts on that? It's critics all over
- 22:17Speaker 4: the place.
- 22:19Speaker 6: So if you actually go back and do the research,
- 22:22Speaker 6: that kind of format could cost us positions depending on
- 22:26Speaker 6: the number of teams. I don't see the critics actually
- 22:29Speaker 6: digging in to understand that reality. I don't see the
- 22:32Speaker 6: critics actually analyzing, like I've just described how schedules are
- 22:37Speaker 6: evaluated so the critics can run of the microphones and
- 22:41Speaker 6: share their opinions.
- 22:43Speaker 4: We're trying to find the format.
- 22:47Speaker 6: To determine whatever number it is, the best teams in
- 22:50Speaker 6: college football. And I think where we are right now
- 22:54Speaker 6: is we have used a political process inside a room
- 22:57Speaker 6: to come to decisions about football. We should be using
- 23:00Speaker 6: football information to come to football decisions.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Have to be unanimous.
- 23:06Speaker 6: We provide a model, and then we sit on our
- 23:09Speaker 6: hands for a year and a half two years, as
- 23:11Speaker 6: opposed to looking at the depth of issues I'm describing
- 23:14Speaker 6: about the game and the concerns about regular season scheduling
- 23:18Speaker 6: being impacted by what we have right now. We sat
- 23:23Speaker 6: on our hands because we had to have unanimity.
- 23:26Speaker 9: One could say that we talk about AMAC qualifiers. Look
- 23:30Speaker 9: at the instant a basketball term.
- 23:32Speaker 10: If you were to give the ACC a certain amount
- 23:35Speaker 10: based off of what was happening a decade ago, they're
- 23:37Speaker 10: the strongest conference arguably, and now they are no longer
- 23:41Speaker 10: that they had a record low and percentage representation.
- 23:44Speaker 9: So why should we be awarding a conference a certain
- 23:48Speaker 9: amount of automat qualifiers for a certain amount of years?
- 23:51Speaker 4: Why should we be setting that in stone for several years?
- 23:54Speaker 4: Is that an editorial or a question?
- 23:56Speaker 11: Hey, that's been asked by critics, reporters, everybody else.
- 24:00Speaker 4: There are lots of stake right now. Well, I don't
- 24:01Speaker 4: know what you're asking, your observant question, do you believe well,
- 24:04Speaker 4: it stopped. I just asked you, what's the question.
- 24:08Speaker 11: Do you believe that setting out that format for several years,
- 24:12Speaker 11: not just for one year, for several years? Is fair
- 24:15Speaker 11: having that static for on that qualifiers for a certain
- 24:19Speaker 11: amount of period.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Well, yeah, your question assumes like one variable when I
- 24:27Speaker 6: just walked through their other variables show. Well, I let
- 24:31Speaker 6: you ask your question so you can decide whether you
- 24:34Speaker 6: want me to answer the question or not. So there's
- 24:38Speaker 6: one variable you asked about, right, which is if you
- 24:41Speaker 6: do this. And I began by saying, we're not committed
- 24:48Speaker 6: at this point to something we're interesting.
- 24:53Speaker 7: To your fourth grade in some years that the model
- 24:58Speaker 7: that the grand is discussing would call the SEC it's
- 25:02Speaker 7: as compared to an at large to only forty Why
- 25:05Speaker 7: do you sense that maybe your membership is now more
- 25:09Speaker 7: passionately behind the idea of an at large only format.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Well, in in our own room, all right, I've had
- 25:19Speaker 6: our flight structors tell me directly that we've given too
- 25:22Speaker 6: much away to arrive at these political compromises that we
- 25:28Speaker 6: move teams from outside twelve in. And we've spoken about
- 25:34Speaker 6: that before. You know how many of those compromises does
- 25:38Speaker 6: it take?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Last week?
- 25:42Speaker 6: It took us a while to move beyond a model
- 25:45Speaker 6: introduced in twenty one. When at early twenty one, when
- 25:49Speaker 6: the when the conference alignments looked much different than they
- 25:52Speaker 6: do now, and so part of I think the right
- 25:56Speaker 6: conversation is about how do you continue to adapt to
- 25:59Speaker 6: all not a static game, nor should it be. I
- 26:03Speaker 6: think the second recognition is things have changed greatly, and
- 26:08Speaker 6: part of where we are in basketball is because we
- 26:12Speaker 6: have changed as a membership. So both of our new
- 26:15Speaker 6: members were selected at large. We've taken ten years to.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Move from where we were.
- 26:22Speaker 6: For the preceding ten years, so there's not like switch
- 26:25Speaker 6: flipping that goes on. I think the word hope is
- 26:29Speaker 6: at the center to how do you bring people into
- 26:32Speaker 6: the conversation.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Late in the season and has changing environment, and so
- 26:38Speaker 4: the idea of could you have.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Play in type games continues to populate itself before you're
- 26:44Speaker 6: in the see a Pece selection. That's about building interest
- 26:48Speaker 6: and giving hope. Whether that's the ultimate destination, we'll see.
- 26:53Speaker 6: But to your question, why does it populate itself? Why
- 26:59Speaker 6: do people think about it? Even if it costs us something?
- 27:03Speaker 6: You could have more teams perhaps involved later.
- 27:05Speaker 4: In the season through that moment's recreating that thing.
- 27:09Speaker 6: How much discussion has the any and we're going hypothetical.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Down the road.
- 27:13Speaker 4: You're spared with.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Me too, on that offers one e in there.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Being accomplish sat and moved obviously.
- 27:19Speaker 12: And how much the league touching?
- 27:21Speaker 4: Is this league how seerious or is that of the stuff?
- 27:24Speaker 6: We haven't talked through that, So that's not at the
- 27:27Speaker 6: top of my points of consideration. You have to be
- 27:31Speaker 6: mindful of change, and you know, there's there's a saying
- 27:36Speaker 6: goes slow so you can go fast.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I think that gets lost these days.
- 27:40Speaker 6: You know, people say, sources say here's an idea, and
- 27:44Speaker 6: all of sudden we're down a road without thinking through
- 27:47Speaker 6: all the elements involved in that decision.
- 27:51Speaker 4: So we try to help bring those we probably don't
- 27:54Speaker 4: think of everything ourselves right out the bad. So that's
- 27:56Speaker 4: why a little bit of times helping.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's part of the reason why I like Greg
- 28:02Speaker 1: Sayky's commissioner. He will tell you how the cow choose
- 28:07Speaker 1: the cabbage. Uh, he won't, you know, uh vacillate on
- 28:14Speaker 1: certain things like what we've seen in the past in
- 28:16Speaker 1: the Big twelve.
- 28:17Speaker 2: He doesn't do that.
- 28:20Speaker 1: What what what he does try to do is separate
- 28:23Speaker 1: the nonsensical from the sensical. And what he just said
- 28:28Speaker 1: there at the very end is it's it's it's a
- 28:30Speaker 1: really bad habit that a lot of reporters, be the
- 28:35Speaker 1: newspaper reporters, television reporters, radio reporters, uh, fan site reporters,
- 28:41Speaker 1: whatever this business of. And I'm quoting here the quote,
- 28:45Speaker 1: there are those who would say dot dot dot.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Uh. Some people have said dot dot dot. There's there's
- 28:52Speaker 2: no attributing in that case. There's no attribution to who's
- 28:56Speaker 2: doing that.
- 28:57Speaker 1: And that's what he's trying to But let's talk about
- 28:59Speaker 1: the hearing and not the speculative. Well, there are people
- 29:04Speaker 1: out there who believe that. Come on, you know, get
- 29:09Speaker 1: real on a lot of it, and that's what he does.
- 29:11Speaker 1: We're gonna hear some more from him next hour, and
- 29:13Speaker 1: he will get into more of that the playoff theory
- 29:17Speaker 1: thing as well as the real stuff. Up next, speaking
- 29:21Speaker 1: real might be inconceivable, but it's real. Next, I'm thirteen
- 29:24Speaker 1: under the Zone.
- 29:29Speaker 5: And we're back to the Craigway Show. Have a message
- 29:32Speaker 5: for Craig. Share it by using the talkback feature on
- 29:36Speaker 5: the iHeartRadio app.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us on this Wednesday afternoon.
- 29:45Speaker 1: He got rock Wednesday afternoon, We're going to hear some
- 29:48Speaker 1: more from Greg Sankie, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference
- 29:51Speaker 1: here in a few minutes about the possibility and where
- 29:54Speaker 1: things stand and what they could consider for college football playoff,
- 30:00Speaker 1: what's being discussed among the commissioners in the ads and
- 30:03Speaker 1: the presidents, and also how the eight or nine game
- 30:10Speaker 1: quandary of the conference schedule may even affect that.
- 30:14Speaker 2: So there's more of that coming up also.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Here in a moment, I'll run down some some look
- 30:22Speaker 1: at what's coming up, because we're just around the corner
- 30:24Speaker 1: for the Major League Baseball Draft, and there's some familiar
- 30:27Speaker 1: names on these mock drafts that are popping up and
- 30:31Speaker 1: on the text line we're Today is National Hamburger Day.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Don't ask me why.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I don't know why May twenty eighth is National Hamburger Day,
- 30:40Speaker 1: but it is. And I saw one posting about it yesterday. Foh,
- 30:44Speaker 1: is that right? And then I saw all kinds of
- 30:46Speaker 1: you know, obviously burger joints trumping it, you know, and
- 30:50Speaker 1: trumpeting it, saying hey, hey, there's that today is you know,
- 30:53Speaker 1: May twenty eighth is National Hamburger Day. So it got
- 30:55Speaker 1: me to thinking yesterday and that's why I tossed it
- 30:56Speaker 1: at the end of the show. I said, think about it.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Where's the best place? Not best place, necessarily the best
- 31:04Speaker 1: hamburger you ever had was?
- 31:05Speaker 2: And then you fill in the blank.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It could be a place, might have been something that
- 31:10Speaker 1: somebody did it cooked it in a backyard barbecue or backyard.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Cookout, keeps in barbecue.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I'm not from New York, uh from It could have
- 31:18Speaker 1: been a grilling situation. Maybe you had your dad grilled
- 31:22Speaker 1: the best burgers ever had or whatever. So I just
- 31:25Speaker 1: want to know the best hamburger you ever had. Cameron
- 31:30Speaker 1: Parker says his was at a place near Burnet.
- 31:33Speaker 2: In what did you say? It's called a Happy Valley?
- 31:36Speaker 2: What was the holiday Hoover's Valley Cafe, Hoover's.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Valley Cafe and Burnet is where he had the best
- 31:44Speaker 1: hamburger he's ever had. And like I said, it doesn't
- 31:48Speaker 1: necessarily have to be a place, but if if you
- 31:51Speaker 1: want to list one, you can. Folks list a place
- 31:54Speaker 1: on Barton Springs called Praduncles.
- 31:59Speaker 2: And I know that I used to.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Like to uh get a get a burger over at
- 32:07Speaker 1: Sandy's Frozen Custard. They had a pretty good I'll tell
- 32:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you you know, Hilbert's only as like I
- 32:12Speaker 1: guess the one location of there on Cameron Road now, uh,
- 32:15Speaker 1: but they still do one of my favorite Chile cheeseburgers
- 32:18Speaker 1: of all time. Uh Tina Madonato and the and the
- 32:21Speaker 1: great staff over uh there and uh, there's a there's
- 32:25Speaker 1: a place. There's a and it really is a dive.
- 32:28Speaker 1: It's on the west side of Waco.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Now if you go to if you go to Waco,
- 32:32Speaker 2: I know some people like to go to health Camp
- 32:34Speaker 2: and I've had the.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Burger there before and it's pretty good. Or cups that's
- 32:37Speaker 1: good too. Uh. But there's but there's a place in
- 32:41Speaker 1: Waco on the west side of town called Double R.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And it's like and it's spelled like do you be
- 32:47Speaker 1: apostrophe L. It's not spelled like double like you get
- 32:51Speaker 1: a double in baseball? Do you be apostrophe L? And
- 32:55Speaker 1: then the letter are double R. And that's a great burger.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And that's a you know, but there's lots. I mentioned
- 33:00Speaker 1: a place in Omaha is gone and I'll tell you
- 33:04Speaker 1: probably one of the best Hamburger's I ever had. I'll
- 33:08Speaker 1: mention that a little later on. So anyway, that's what's
- 33:11Speaker 1: out there. But Duncles by the way, that's where Terry
- 33:14Speaker 1: Blocks is.
- 33:15Speaker 4: Now.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Oh well, see now it makes perfect sense. You go
- 33:18Speaker 1: from like maybe the best burger in the area to
- 33:20Speaker 1: the best barbecue in the area, right, I don't know.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I mean that's one of the great places. We read
- 33:25Speaker 1: yesterday the top ten of Texas month least top fifty
- 33:31Speaker 1: barbecue list, and Interstellar made the top ten.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It was like number six on the list. So yeah,
- 33:37Speaker 2: it's good stuff. And that's that's good to know about that.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Bird Uncles preceded my arrival in the Greater Ostin area,
- 33:47Speaker 1: but the filling station right nearby had had good burgers too.
- 33:50Speaker 2: I liked that.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And like I said, Sandy's just down the road, good
- 33:54Speaker 1: burgers all like that. So there's there's there's a lot
- 33:57Speaker 1: of great, great burgers here in the Austin area.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I mean, even even the.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Chain places like shake Shack or Dry Queen and Wataburger
- 34:04Speaker 1: and all those. I don't I don't have quibbles with Lottos.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Probably as good a burger as you can get in Austin. Also,
- 34:14Speaker 1: depending on what you get on it is.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 34:19Speaker 1: I like getting that Longhorn special at top notch. That's great.
- 34:23Speaker 1: That's that's that's that's just an outstanding burger. But anyway,
- 34:27Speaker 1: there's all kinds of different ones. Somebody said, my favorite
- 34:30Speaker 1: is Alamo Springs Cafe outside of Fredericksburg. Hoover's on Park
- 34:36Speaker 1: Road four outside of Kingsland. Okay, see these you know,
- 34:41Speaker 1: Kingsland Highland Lakes. You mentioned of Burnett out that way.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I talk.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Oh oh okay, park Road four outside of Kingsland. Okay, yeah,
- 34:52Speaker 1: so it's coming coming. I guess it'd be west from Burnett,
- 34:57Speaker 1: would be over there. Okay, So there it is.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That's good to know.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Duly noted Cameron just remembered it was up that way
- 35:05Speaker 1: and what was what was so good about it?
- 35:08Speaker 2: The bun was incredible.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yeah, to me, I think the experienced a good part
- 35:14Speaker 3: of it. It's you know, it's this old school cafe.
- 35:16Speaker 3: A lot of pies there. I think you would like
- 35:18Speaker 3: it because of the pie selection, great French fries. I
- 35:22Speaker 3: love their their ranch dressing. That's a big plus for me.
- 35:26Speaker 3: So I love that place and I wish it was
- 35:29Speaker 3: I've only you know, I've only had it three or
- 35:30Speaker 3: four times in my life because I'm not out in
- 35:32Speaker 3: Berne at Kingsland area.
- 35:34Speaker 1: A lot but phenomenal burger. Okay, all right, duly noted,
- 35:39Speaker 1: make a note of that. All right, we need to break.
- 35:41Speaker 1: When we come back, we're going to hear more from
- 35:43Speaker 1: the commissioner at Southeastern Conference, Greg sanky Here, I'm thirteen
- 35:46Speaker 1: under his own.
- 35:52Speaker 5: It's the Craig Way shot with the voice of the
- 35:56Speaker 5: Texas Longhorns and all of fame broadcast there away.
- 36:02Speaker 1: All right, let's hear some more from the commissioner of
- 36:05Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference, Greg Sankie, dealing with in the questions
- 36:09Speaker 1: coming from the reporters about the expansion of the college
- 36:12Speaker 1: football playoff, the variables that go into that, and also
- 36:15Speaker 1: the possibility of the eight or nine game conference schedule.
- 36:20Speaker 4: Hang on, gonna go somebody else?
- 36:22Speaker 13: Does a play in format in any way that lot
- 36:24Speaker 13: the regular season any fur it?
- 36:26Speaker 6: You know, if you're blinging in to sixteen, I don't
- 36:29Speaker 6: think you can make that an absolute statement. You know,
- 36:32Speaker 6: we were having conversations, not necessarily you and I, although
- 36:35Speaker 6: we may have. If you go to twelve, does that
- 36:37Speaker 6: delute the regular season? I can tell you as at
- 36:40Speaker 6: the Georgia Texas game on the field talking excuse me,
- 36:43Speaker 6: the Georgia Alabama game. So where we're week three talking
- 36:47Speaker 6: with media members. Is that I just doesn't feel the same.
- 36:51Speaker 4: For those of you. That was a pretty incredible night.
- 36:54Speaker 6: I think everybody competed at the highest level as hard
- 36:58Speaker 6: as they could, and we had that over and over.
- 37:02Speaker 6: So I think these absolutes on what does or doesn't
- 37:05Speaker 6: impact the regular season are kind of older conversations, maybe
- 37:09Speaker 6: not completely informed. I will go back though, and people
- 37:13Speaker 6: are canceling games because of the CFP selection process that
- 37:17Speaker 6: directly impacts the regular season. And that's where when I
- 37:20Speaker 6: talked about there's a lot more than just one element
- 37:23Speaker 6: all these things, I think those are some of the
- 37:26Speaker 6: broader list developments.
- 37:30Speaker 13: If wins and losses is becoming an outsize more of this,
- 37:34Speaker 13: does that mean that the selection committee is not doing
- 37:37Speaker 13: its job?
- 37:38Speaker 4: Is there a lack of faith in the selection committee?
- 37:41Speaker 6: Well, I don't think wins and losses are outside because
- 37:44Speaker 6: there's two sides to that coin, right, I think it
- 37:47Speaker 6: is there's been so much effort to get to the
- 37:51Speaker 6: point of twelve that the continual evaluation of how are
- 37:56Speaker 6: we making.
- 37:57Speaker 4: Decisions got pushed in the background.
- 38:01Speaker 6: And the way I looked at last year the learning
- 38:03Speaker 6: experience was it used to be the argument about the
- 38:05Speaker 6: top four. That was it I'm fed or I'm sick,
- 38:08Speaker 6: and I'm angry at me. Now you had the last
- 38:11Speaker 6: year and you have the top four with buys, it's
- 38:15Speaker 6: a big deal. You have the next four that play
- 38:18Speaker 6: home games, that's a big deal. You have the next
- 38:21Speaker 6: four that are in, and then you.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Have the next four we're out.
- 38:27Speaker 6: And we had raised the issue when we talked back
- 38:32Speaker 6: in twenty one as a working group about you know,
- 38:34Speaker 6: how do you adapt some of the criteria. I think
- 38:36Speaker 6: the only thing we did is pull out conference championships
- 38:39Speaker 6: when you have teams on the margin.
- 38:42Speaker 4: So how do you look at strength of schedule?
- 38:45Speaker 6: What does that mean? We should be able to contextualize
- 38:48Speaker 6: that better. That doesn't mean that it's everything. And so
- 38:51Speaker 6: that's a little bit of the wins and losses pieces,
- 38:53Speaker 6: because you get have the strongest schedule and go over
- 38:56Speaker 6: and that's not going to put you in the playoff.
- 38:58Speaker 4: So what's the balance, what's the recognition a rigor that
- 39:02Speaker 4: has to be fully considered.
- 39:03Speaker 13: What's the incentive to want to schedule like a taxsas
- 39:08Speaker 13: in Ohio state when you see the oldness in Alabama,
- 39:12Speaker 13: you know.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Obviously really good teams that did get in.
- 39:15Speaker 13: Is it gonna hurt the fabric to schedule these tough
- 39:18Speaker 13: mon conference games out of here?
- 39:20Speaker 7: No.
- 39:21Speaker 6: I'll go back to the last year of four teams
- 39:24Speaker 6: when Texas and Alabama played as.
- 39:26Speaker 4: A non conference game.
- 39:28Speaker 6: I thought, and people had plenty of opinions that the
- 39:33Speaker 6: selection opinion honored the importance of that game. I think
- 39:38Speaker 6: it's good for college football to have those kind of games.
- 39:41Speaker 6: I generally think people lead that way. But you've seen
- 39:46Speaker 6: the dominance of CFP access becoming such a big deal.
- 39:50Speaker 4: So if you.
- 39:51Speaker 6: Pivot, if you pivot some access points, perhaps you can
- 39:58Speaker 6: not be as threatened by a loss. Or is it
- 40:01Speaker 6: a reward for a win that becomes greater or an offset,
- 40:06Speaker 6: particularly a rigorous.
- 40:07Speaker 2: One great doesn't it?
- 40:09Speaker 8: Also, some of these models also set up those non
- 40:14Speaker 8: conference games which you say you would like to or
- 40:16Speaker 8: at least hint that you'd like to preserve and make
- 40:19Speaker 8: them inconsequential, because there's no there would be no consequence
- 40:24Speaker 8: if you lost Texas, if Texas, who the loser of
- 40:28Speaker 8: the Texas So I'm wonder is there a balance that
- 40:31Speaker 8: has to be thought of? Is like, we'd like to
- 40:32Speaker 8: preserve these games, but we also need to preserve the
- 40:35Speaker 8: consequences of these games.
- 40:37Speaker 6: I think the first point is should we like to
- 40:39Speaker 6: preserve the games. I think that's one of the problems
- 40:40Speaker 6: we're encountering right now. And we've seen that and heard that,
- 40:46Speaker 6: and we've even had discussions whether ads were thinking about
- 40:50Speaker 6: maybe I shouldn't play this game, like don't don't walk
- 40:53Speaker 6: away at this point. So, Ralph, I think the first
- 40:56Speaker 6: point exists now. I don't think you can say they're
- 41:01Speaker 6: inconsequential again. I think one of the conversations last year
- 41:06Speaker 6: when we went to twelve was we had a big
- 41:08Speaker 6: game week three, Well, doesn't feel the same.
- 41:10Speaker 4: So I would just.
- 41:11Speaker 6: Caution about making the observation that won't have the same
- 41:15Speaker 6: meaning or same impact.
- 41:17Speaker 4: I think those games do have impact.
- 41:19Speaker 6: They do have meaning now maybe different from an access point,
- 41:26Speaker 6: and that's where I look at some of the waiting
- 41:28Speaker 6: of the rhetoric right now that well, I shouldn't play
- 41:31Speaker 6: those games. I'm better off going eleven and one twelve
- 41:35Speaker 6: and oho. I think that's a bigger threat.
- 41:38Speaker 4: To play in those games and some other model that
- 41:40Speaker 4: might be considered you.
- 41:42Speaker 14: Any anticipation or I hope that the housettlement would be
- 41:46Speaker 14: approved by now where there be a.
- 41:47Speaker 13: Decision, and how does that guide the discussions this weekend?
- 41:54Speaker 4: You know, hope, expectation.
- 41:57Speaker 6: I've learned a long time ago control the court system.
- 42:03Speaker 4: So is there a hope? Is there a thought?
- 42:06Speaker 6: Did people say it would be decided at this point? Yes,
- 42:13Speaker 6: we have a responsibility for implementation. So for the pivot,
- 42:17Speaker 6: what we say this week, yeah, doesn't mean we're gonna
- 42:22Speaker 6: keep preparing. We're gonna keep preparing. We're gonna wait to
- 42:26Speaker 6: see the judge's final decision.
- 42:29Speaker 4: On the postsettlement.
- 42:30Speaker 6: Greg, back on the more clarity we can have earlier
- 42:35Speaker 6: because clocks are taking here, the better.
- 42:38Speaker 15: Greg, you're about the challenges of teams eleven and one
- 42:42Speaker 15: and twelve and zero being compared against teams.
- 42:44Speaker 4: With more losses.
- 42:46Speaker 13: Were you surprised Alabama.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Did not make the playoff question? I don't know that
- 42:50Speaker 4: I'd say surprised. I think that's one of the realities.
- 42:52Speaker 4: But I spoke.
- 42:53Speaker 6: In July of media Days asking how will that nine
- 42:58Speaker 6: and three team, and I use Georgia's really good example,
- 43:00Speaker 6: given their three really difficult road, how do you evaluate
- 43:04Speaker 6: that against other teams that don't come anywhere close to that.
- 43:10Speaker 6: And as I said, we learned something the first time through,
- 43:12Speaker 6: and that raises.
- 43:15Speaker 4: The need for deeper analysis and understanding.
- 43:18Speaker 6: If we're going to just incentivize wins, playing fewer winning
- 43:23Speaker 6: teams can get you to more wins, I don't think
- 43:26Speaker 6: that's great for football.
- 43:28Speaker 4: I mean to Rolf's question so that I think the
- 43:33Speaker 4: wh pressures create the need for something to adopt.
- 43:37Speaker 6: Greg.
- 43:37Speaker 12: Remember when you were at Nashville Big the meetings, you said,
- 43:40Speaker 12: paraphrase you that you know this has to really go
- 43:42Speaker 12: a little it has.
- 43:43Speaker 4: To work the first year if it tol you play
- 43:45Speaker 4: on you of all the things you were talking about.
- 43:47Speaker 12: If you were to kind of look back, like did
- 43:49Speaker 12: it check that box with you know, who got left
- 43:52Speaker 12: at who did it? How it works like a committee
- 43:54Speaker 12: that did it work out? Did it really work as well?
- 43:55Speaker 4: If you were hoping was going to yeah, you'd like
- 43:59Speaker 4: to have more teams.
- 43:59Speaker 6: I think big picture, you know, we went granule right
- 44:03Speaker 6: off the bat, which is, hey, there's this model.
- 44:05Speaker 4: How do you respond to this model? What's the reason.
- 44:06Speaker 6: So if you take a step back yet, it went well,
- 44:11Speaker 6: we had twelve teams selected, there's always going to be
- 44:15Speaker 6: agreement and disagreement. I think we're late in adjusting the seating.
- 44:20Speaker 6: I think that could have happened sooner. We've done that
- 44:24Speaker 6: for the year ahead, and nobody's asked me about the
- 44:28Speaker 6: why of that, So be happy to come back to that.
- 44:32Speaker 6: You watch yourship build. I think when you actually looked
- 44:36Speaker 6: at actual comparisons, I don't compare a January one game
- 44:39Speaker 6: to a semi final a week later, but actually look
- 44:43Speaker 6: at the performance of that game relative to other sports properties.
- 44:49Speaker 6: I think there's there's a lot of good there. You
- 44:51Speaker 6: never sit back and suggest you've reached the destination. There's
- 44:56Speaker 6: always worked in the other But I think big picture
- 45:00Speaker 6: say that in Nashville it has to work. I think
- 45:02Speaker 6: it did work, and I think it's still has room
- 45:05Speaker 6: for improvement.
- 45:06Speaker 4: All got that on a report cards.
- 45:07Speaker 6: Back straight seating and discussing the straight seating with other commissioners.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I'm just gonna brought it up.
- 45:15Speaker 15: So what were those conversations like over the last couple
- 45:18Speaker 15: of months, looking at what the last college of the
- 45:21Speaker 15: playoff was with twelve teams, they've been making that decision
- 45:24Speaker 15: for a straight scene?
- 45:25Speaker 4: Can you take us far Occurdy? Oh yeah, it's a
- 45:29Speaker 4: lot of meetings.
- 45:32Speaker 6: They then break it down a handle supersion exactly which
- 45:37Speaker 6: is condensed.
- 45:40Speaker 4: I think the CFP.
- 45:41Speaker 6: Selection process has become a much bigger deal after a moment. Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 6: I think that one. And again if you go back,
- 45:48Speaker 6: since John was kind enough to quote you last week
- 45:50Speaker 6: in double Check, I said, you know, CFP selection, we're
- 45:54Speaker 6: going to go through this sixteen team eight game first time.
- 46:00Speaker 4: We have schools that they think about Bowl games primarily
- 46:05Speaker 4: in that.
- 46:06Speaker 6: But the questions about the selection process, not the criticism
- 46:10Speaker 6: of the committee, but criterion process.
- 46:14Speaker 4: For me, well, you've seen some say we should.
- 46:16Speaker 6: Go back to the old way of the PCs, and
- 46:18Speaker 6: you know, is there some kind of in between between
- 46:21Speaker 6: human and machines.
- 46:22Speaker 1: That can inform there?
- 46:25Speaker 4: They've got analytics.
- 46:26Speaker 6: I'm just gonna stay in retirees court because at some
- 46:28Speaker 6: point I've read press announcements on you guys and keep
- 46:32Speaker 6: showing up.
- 46:34Speaker 4: I'm asking questions.
- 46:36Speaker 16: Tess, say, Zekay Ziggler has say for fifth year of eligibility,
- 46:39Speaker 16: would you like to see college athletes get five years ability?
- 46:43Speaker 6: You know, you've kind of cross pollinated two things, so
- 46:50Speaker 6: gay in the courts have to decide.
- 46:51Speaker 4: What's gonna happen.
- 46:53Speaker 6: I think the introduction of five and five happened back
- 46:57Speaker 6: in like ninety two. I had just arrived at the
- 47:01Speaker 6: Southern Conference as an assistant commissioner for compliance around fifteenth
- 47:08Speaker 6: Avenue in Plano, Texas with our office fifteenth three.
- 47:12Speaker 4: And it was not advanced.
- 47:15Speaker 6: It came back in ninety eight as a commissioner in
- 47:17Speaker 6: the Southron Conference. I think at that point we're at
- 47:19Speaker 6: the Campbell the towers down off seventy five, and I
- 47:23Speaker 6: was involved in that conversation.
- 47:25Speaker 4: It didn't advance.
- 47:27Speaker 6: I was here during the era, and the reason I
- 47:30Speaker 6: remember it is because of a conversation I think two
- 47:32Speaker 6: thousand and six seven Mike Shula was the coach at Alabama.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Mike had asked a direct question about it and it
- 47:39Speaker 6: didn't advance. So I kind of put that one aside myself.
- 47:44Speaker 6: It's been introduced at the national level. I think the
- 47:47Speaker 6: conversation has to be informed with the why it didn't
- 47:52Speaker 6: advance before. This is primarily an undergraduate experience. We got
- 47:56Speaker 6: a lot more summer school, but we allow waivers out there.
- 48:03Speaker 6: I think some of the rationale for advancing the idea
- 48:07Speaker 6: ties back to you get through the waivers and just
- 48:12Speaker 6: have something standard and you could do that at four
- 48:15Speaker 6: years of eligibility. Plenty of court cases now related to
- 48:19Speaker 6: five season or five years, four years with than five.
- 48:23Speaker 6: I mean, they're all over the place. Should my year
- 48:25Speaker 6: count at junior college? Should account in the Division two?
- 48:28Speaker 6: Should account Division three? I mean I played two years
- 48:32Speaker 6: of ANAI baseball and one year at junior college basketball,
- 48:35Speaker 6: So perhaps there's something out there for me.
- 48:38Speaker 4: Just like the nil Moneys of driving force and some
- 48:40Speaker 4: of those two. I'll let others speak to their wives.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Great, can I ask you one month the playoff question?
- 48:48Speaker 6: Does anybody else who hasn't asked a question? I have
- 48:50Speaker 6: a question because I send friend and that I shall.
- 48:52Speaker 4: Bring any I have a question, laver.
- 48:55Speaker 6: Well, you didn't raise your hand or anything, so I
- 48:57Speaker 6: might suppose or jump in okay, or retire and then
- 49:02Speaker 6: come back.
- 49:05Speaker 4: What is the what is the course of action for
- 49:08Speaker 4: the league? In maybe the power of conferences?
- 49:11Speaker 6: If the settlements do not, I think are likely several,
- 49:18Speaker 6: and I'll let my lawyers speak to that within my
- 49:20Speaker 6: room for ross rather than publish it. I think you're
- 49:23Speaker 6: still awaiting, focused on preparing for a settlement as it's
- 49:28Speaker 6: been presented at this point.
- 49:35Speaker 2: All right, there's some more from Gregson.
- 49:37Speaker 1: You got kind of funny there, I did talking about
- 49:40Speaker 1: his home collegiate eligibility left and what was going on.
- 49:43Speaker 1: But that's another thing. Remember Diego Pavia successfully sued to
- 49:48Speaker 1: get to get more eligibility, to get another year of
- 49:54Speaker 1: eligibility of Vanderbilt under the.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I know the motive that.
- 50:03Speaker 1: His junior college years should not have counted. So that's
- 50:07Speaker 1: something else they're still trying to figure out. But there's
- 50:09Speaker 1: still more and coming up next hour we'll hear some
- 50:11Speaker 1: more from Greg Sanky. What about the guys going on
- 50:14Speaker 1: to the next level in baseball from college to pros
- 50:17Speaker 1: Mock draft update for you when we come back.
- 50:19Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 50:22Speaker 5: Welcome back to the craig Way Show and the Voice
- 50:25Speaker 5: of the Longhorns. Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
- 50:29Speaker 5: at Horn Voice.
- 50:36Speaker 1: We were hearing from the Commissioner, Greg Sankey, the SEC.
- 50:39Speaker 1: We'll hear more from him coming up next hour, but
- 50:42Speaker 1: they will talking about eligibility and things of student athletes,
- 50:45Speaker 1: those collegiate baseball players and not just collegiate but high
- 50:53Speaker 1: school baseball players who stand ready to sign and take
- 50:58Speaker 1: the next step. Remember baseball did different than basketball and
- 51:03Speaker 1: football in terms of what you can do in terms
- 51:06Speaker 1: of signing right out of high school or if you
- 51:10Speaker 1: pass on that within forty five days, I believe it
- 51:13Speaker 1: is of your twenty first birthday. So whenever you see
- 51:19Speaker 1: a draft, or for that matter, in this case we're
- 51:26Speaker 1: just a little inside of a month out from the
- 51:29Speaker 1: baseball draft, you see a mixture of both high school
- 51:34Speaker 1: seniors and college players. And it's also noteworthy because several
- 51:42Speaker 1: of these high school players will leverage where they have
- 51:45Speaker 1: signed with college against how much money they could be
- 51:50Speaker 1: offered in a signing bonus or in a contract. Overall,
- 51:53Speaker 1: that's the way it's been for some time and it
- 51:55Speaker 1: continues to be so like that. So with that in mind,
- 51:58Speaker 1: Kyle of McDaniel, who covers me league baseball drafting for ESPN,
- 52:03Speaker 1: put out not only his updated one hundred and fifty
- 52:07Speaker 1: prospect rankings and his mini mock now has come out
- 52:12Speaker 1: with his first full on mock draft and the number
- 52:18Speaker 1: one pick he's projecting and this year's major league draft.
- 52:23Speaker 1: By the way, do you know who has the number
- 52:24Speaker 1: one pick this year's Major League I don't be the
- 52:27Speaker 1: Washington Nationals and he's projecting them to take Stillwater High
- 52:33Speaker 1: School third basement. Ethan Holiday. Of course, Ethan is the
- 52:39Speaker 1: son of Matt Holliday, the former Big League or the
- 52:41Speaker 1: grandson of Tom Holiday, the former coach and pitching coaches
- 52:45Speaker 1: pitching coach for the Long Orange two thousand and five
- 52:47Speaker 1: National Championship team. Ethan third Basion. He was a guy
- 52:51Speaker 1: that Gene Watson had mentioned. He went to see both
- 52:53Speaker 1: him and another guy whose name you're going to hear
- 52:55Speaker 1: me mentioned a few minutes and Gino.
- 52:59Speaker 2: By the way, we'll join us Tom on the program tomorrow.
- 53:01Speaker 1: We are going to bring you the program from UFCU
- 53:04Speaker 1: dish fark Field as it is press conference and practice
- 53:06Speaker 1: day for the four teams that will be taking part
- 53:09Speaker 1: of the regional So we'll hear from the coaches and
- 53:12Speaker 1: we'll hear and we'll also visit with Geene Watson and
- 53:17Speaker 1: also Ty Harrington our weekly conversations both of Major League
- 53:21Speaker 1: Baseball with Gino and college baseball with Tie. They'll join
- 53:24Speaker 1: us tomorrow on the program. But Washington, according to Kyler McDaniel,
- 53:29Speaker 1: is going to take Ethan Holiday, who all these Holidays
- 53:33Speaker 1: who've signed and played for Oklahoma State in the past
- 53:38Speaker 1: josh Holiday, the head coach tom Son, the head coach
- 53:41Speaker 1: at Oklahoma State, played at Oklahoma State. Ethan Holidays actually
- 53:46Speaker 1: signed to play at Oklahoma, but Skip Johnson is not
- 53:50Speaker 1: counting on getting him. He figures he's going to sign
- 53:53Speaker 1: a major league contract, and he's projected to be the
- 53:55Speaker 1: number one overall pick, so Ethan Holiday will probably wind
- 53:59Speaker 1: up being drafted if he's drafted by the Nationals, signing
- 54:03Speaker 1: with them. Angels had the number two pick. Liam Doyle,
- 54:07Speaker 1: the left hander of the Longhorns, were able to go
- 54:09Speaker 1: after and score four runs against him last Friday afternoon
- 54:16Speaker 1: there or Thursday afternoon in Hoover, but he's projected to
- 54:22Speaker 1: be the second pick in the draft and would go
- 54:25Speaker 1: to the Los Angeles Angels Mariners at the third pick,
- 54:27Speaker 1: they're projected to take Kate Anderson, the LSU left hander
- 54:30Speaker 1: Colorado with a fourth pick expected to take Oregon State
- 54:33Speaker 1: shortstop Iva Arquette. Cardinals have the fifth pick, and here
- 54:38Speaker 1: you go. Eli Willets, the shortstop from Fort Cobb, Oklahoma,
- 54:44Speaker 1: whose brother plays Jackson Willetts, plays for OU, whose dad,
- 54:50Speaker 1: Reggie Willets, is the associate head coach for OU.
- 54:55Speaker 2: But and Eli is signed with Oklahoma.
- 54:59Speaker 1: But again, he's another player that Skip Johnson does not
- 55:02Speaker 1: believe he's going to wind up on his roster. He
- 55:03Speaker 1: believes he's going to wind up signing a big league contract,
- 55:05Speaker 1: and if you're drafted in the first five, that probably
- 55:09Speaker 1: makes sense. But that was the game that Gene Watson
- 55:12Speaker 1: went to see Ethan Holiday and still Water play Fort
- 55:20Speaker 1: Cobb with Eli Willitts earlier this season when he was
- 55:23Speaker 1: on with US. He was actually at the game when
- 55:25Speaker 1: he was on with US for a segment, and they're
- 55:26Speaker 1: expected to be two of the top five. Six pick
- 55:30Speaker 1: selected by the Pirates is projected to be Jamie Arnold,
- 55:33Speaker 1: left handed from Florida State Corona High School, California, shortstop
- 55:40Speaker 1: Billy Carlson, who was signed with cow but according to
- 55:44Speaker 1: this mock draft, expected to be the seventh choice overall
- 55:46Speaker 1: by the Marlins. Kyson Witherspoon, the Oklahoma right hander, expected
- 55:51Speaker 1: to be the eighth choice of the draft of the
- 55:54Speaker 1: Toronto Blue Jays, so that would be three. And this
- 55:57Speaker 1: was something when Toby Roland was on with US weeks
- 56:00Speaker 1: ago before we went up to Norman, he said, there's
- 56:04Speaker 1: a decent chance that Ethan Holiday, Eli Willitts and Kyson
- 56:09Speaker 1: Witherspoon could all go in the top.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Ten of draft.
- 56:11Speaker 1: He goes, Now, that's big for the state of Oklahoma.
- 56:13Speaker 1: I think it'd be big for any state really, but
- 56:16Speaker 1: especially if three going the top eight.
- 56:18Speaker 2: But it could happen.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Another Corona High school kid we mentioned, the shortstop Billy Carlson,
- 56:24Speaker 1: projected to be the pick of Miami at number seven.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Seth Ornandez, a right handed pitcher also from Corona, also
- 56:31Speaker 1: signed with cow but projected to be the ninth overall
- 56:36Speaker 1: pick of the Reds and then the White Sox at
- 56:38Speaker 1: number ten. Looking at Jojo Parker, shortstop from Purvis High
- 56:42Speaker 1: School in Mississippi's where Gene was last week when he
- 56:45Speaker 1: was over there scouting scouting him. So Gino's taking a
- 56:49Speaker 1: look at a lot of different guys than they All
- 56:50Speaker 1: of them are the rest of this mock draft.
- 56:53Speaker 2: First round.
- 56:55Speaker 1: A's and number eleven expected to take or projected in
- 56:59Speaker 1: this mock draft to take Brendan summer Hill from Arizona.
- 57:01Speaker 1: The Rangers to take hewittt Trustville High School shortstop Steele
- 57:07Speaker 1: Hall the twelfth overall pick. Giants to go with THEHVA
- 57:11Speaker 1: Alloy the Arkansas shortstop SEC Player of the Year fourteen
- 57:15Speaker 1: pick to Tampa Bay projected to take Josh Hammond High

- 58:35Speaker 2: He's a real deal. I've seen him. You've seen him
- 58:37Speaker 2: a couple of his games before he can do it?
- 58:39Speaker 4: Huh can do it?
- 58:40Speaker 1: Excellent defender Padres at twenty five, projected to go for

- 59:25Speaker 1: way centerfielder from Oregon to go to Baltimore at thirty one,
- 59:29Speaker 1: and Milwaukee to go with Gavin Keeling. We saw him
- 59:31Speaker 1: get a big hit against Texas last week. He's projected
- 59:34Speaker 1: to be a compensation pick at thirty two, and then
- 59:37Speaker 1: finally the competitive balance picks. Between rounds one and two.
- 59:44Speaker 1: They're all high school picks except for Anthony Ions and
- 59:47Speaker 1: the LSU right hander at thirty four and the Yankees
- 59:51Speaker 1: at thirty nine projected to take Andrew Fisher, the Tennessee
- 59:54Speaker 1: third baseman first baseman, saw him play first the other day,
- 59:58Speaker 1: and the Dodgers, with the final pick and number forty
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: in the compensation round, the expected to take Clinton centerfielder
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Kim Kinderella. So that's a mock draft look at major
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: League baseball. We'll be back to wrap up hour number
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: two on thirteen under the Zone, third and final hour
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: of the program here on thirteen hundred the Zone. Glad
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: to have you with us here on this Wednesday afternoon.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: You got rock Wednesday. We brought you some of that,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and we'll have some more as we go forward. We
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: brought you quite a bit of Greg Sankie. We'll bring
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: you some more coming up this all from the SEC
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: spring meetings and is visiting with the media talking about
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: the college Football Playoff, the possible expansion of it, the
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: different modeling of it. The one thing that's gotten hot
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: today or at least yesterday and talking about it was
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: a sixteen team model that will include the five highest
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: ranked conference champions. So if you figure that those would
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: probably include, but not necessarily limited to, the SEC, the
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Big Ten, the Big Twelve, the ACC that's four, and
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: then whether you're talking about the American.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Or you know, even the Mid American or whatever it.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Might be, the five highest ranked conference champions and eleven
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: at large bids. The coaches seem to favor this model,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: and the athletic directors perhaps not so much, because there
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: appears to be some sort of disconnect between the ads
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: and the coaches. Florida AD Scott Strickland Texas A and
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: m athletic director trev Alberts both have been adamant about
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: wanting automatic qualifiers, which would go along with the league
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: adopting a nine game league schedule, but the coaches, who
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: appear to favor an eight game conference schedule have apparently
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: been leaning toward what they think the sixteen team model
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: would be like, for example, Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Kirby Smart. They said they prefer a model with the
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: sixteen best teams. Smart said he wanted a model that
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: would include the most SEC teams possible, pointing to the
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: SEC's other sports and their ability to flood the postseason
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: because of strength of schedule. So there's a lot there,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: and we'll hear some more.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Sainki.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: By the way, there was a great quote from former
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: commissioner Roy Kramer, who was the first one, I think,
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: and then the first one in the modern era, and
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: then it was Mike's Live and then Sankie, and he
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: said he had a conversation with Roy Kramer where they
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: talked about all of these disagreements and they have to
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: come to an agreement for twenty twenty six by December
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: first of this year. And he said he takes comfort
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: in the fact that past commissioners were able to disagree
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: and quote always figure a way out. So he said,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: quote there's a responsibility to figure that out. We might
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: get mad at the moment, mad at different times. We've
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: been able to work together different people, but Kramer's description
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: gives me great comfort. So anyway, we'll here's some more
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: from Greg Sankie coming up. The scheduling decision for twenty
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: twenty six not done yet and he declined to give
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: a specific date on that, but we'll hear him talk
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: more about that coming up. So that's been going on
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: at the spring meetings there for the Southeastern Conference, we
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: mentioned NHL and the NBA playoffs into their final fours
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: and teams in commanding positions. Oklahoma City Thunder looking to
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: close out the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight back of the Paycom Center.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: The Pacers have a.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: Commanding three to one lead in the East on the
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Knicks after winning last night. In the NHL, Florida can
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: close South Carolina Hurricanes. They have to do it on
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: the road, but they can do it in Raleigh with
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: a win tonight. And of course the Stars with their
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: backs to the wall. The Dallas Stars, they're down three
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: games to one and they will hope host Edmonton in
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Game five tomorrow night. By the way, Texas Stars into
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the Western Conference finals and they'll play Abbotsford in the
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: best of five, and they did not play Abbotsford this year.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: The AHL being as large as it is, they did
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: not play them this year, but they that starts this
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: week as well. All right, Also we dropped out there
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: for your consideration. We'd love to hear from you because
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: today is National Hamburger Day, so it brings my out.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: You know where, did you have a great hamburger? Did
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: your mom ever make hamburgers for you?
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Shifted? Did she make a good burger? Yeah, she was
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: a good cook.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Yes, my my mom could make make good hamburgers
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: as well. And we've talked about some of the places
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: where We've had good burgers.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: One of the best I've ever had has changed his name.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: The place has changed.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: If you've been up, if you have any connection with
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Denton or the University of North Texas, you know of
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: what for many years is known as Denton County Independent
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Hamburger Company. It was around when I was in school
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: there over forty years ago. Now it has undergone quite
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: a few changes, and it was bought back ten years
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: ago or so by a guy named Mike Barnett, who
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: is the brother of Dave Barnett, the former ESPN broadcaster
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: who's the voice of the main Green of North Texas.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: And Mike has undergone a couple of changes. He changed
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: it he shortened it to Denton Independent Hamburger Company, and
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: now he's officially changed the name. It just happened a
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: week ago. It's now called County Road Hamburger Company. And
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: the reason he's doing that he's planning to franchise. And
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: it's a great burger. I love their Hickory burger. So
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: who knows, maybe there'll be one in the Greater Austin
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: are at County Road Hamburger maybe. So anyway, that's that's
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: that's an example of what I'm saying. But it could
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: be it doesn't necessarily have to be a specific place.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: It could be an experience you had. We had the
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: best hamburger that you ever had. However, folks have waited
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: in for a variety of places. Like I said, Sea
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Powell mentioned Blue Boning Cafe as well as the Pies
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and Marble Falls, and somebody said, wait, blue Bony Cafe
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: sells food other than pies. I know, inconceivable right now
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: they have. It's that and the Coffee Cup Family Restaurant
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: in Hiko probably my two favorite places to get a
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: slice of pie. Well, House of Pies in Houston's also great,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: so great pie places, but Blue Bony Cafe is tremendous
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: in Marble Falls. But yes, and then somebody else said,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the best burger I ever had is from odd Duck
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: on South Lamar And you know what I saw that
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: raid it is having one of the best burgers in it,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: said The AGB Cowboy burger is up there too.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: If you don't mind cooking it yourself. See that's what
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: I'm talking about. You can. You can cook it yourself and.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Say you had the best burger you ever had, or
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: have somebody who's a really good cook or chef or
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: grill master cook up a burger with a good with
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: a good piece of meat and how you season it,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: all those kinds of things that something like that may
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: wind up giving you the best hamburger you've ever had.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: But that's the question. Best hamburger you ever had was?
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: And then you just fill in the rest, whether it
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: was at a place, or whether somebody cooked it for you,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: or whether you grilled it yourself, or whatever the circumstance
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: was today National Hamburger Day, the best hamburger you ever
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: had was? And you tell us the rest, And you
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: can do that on our text line text the word
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: texas followed by your question of comment to eight, one, five,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: three zero.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Do you have any honorable mentions like for me, Hoover's
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Valley Cafe's my number one. But if I was doing
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: like you know, honorable mention like for instance, like fast
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: food Hamburger right McDonald's, mcdoubell, I don't know if it
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: would classify as fast food, but one textra sid mighty fine.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: And I think if you came to Austin, that's a
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: really good burgers right now. Not the best burger I've had,
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: but I know I'm gonna have a quality burger there.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: And then next grill and okc oh right out there
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: right outside Wobers thought it because the experience is a
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: huge part of this answer for me, craig, and the
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: next Grill experience is incredible because you walk into the
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: shackets cash only.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: There's just a bar.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Top with six stools, and I think I got three
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: small little booths.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Little booths, O little yeah, little boos, little tables, and
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: there's a couple. I don't think there's anything on the outside,
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: at least when I was there, just a place to
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: scan it like.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: People maybe, and you order your burger.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Now there's more than one location, but that you went
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: to the original.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Origin, but I didn't go to the new one. The
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: new one I've heard like, yeah, go to the original yeah, right, agreed,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: agreed that that would be. That would be probably like
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: two or three that's up there for me.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I mentioned Dinker in Omaha would be one one of
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: the best places I ever went to, believe it or not.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: So this was a dive, a hole in the wall dive.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: It's in the very small I don't think you've ever
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: been in this town. It's in North Carolina. You ever
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: heard of Elizabethtown. I think I've heard of it. I
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: don't know if I've been through it. It's down in
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: the southeastern part of the state. It's between say, Fayetteville
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: and the coast. So I passed through the area a lot.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: And there's a little place right in the middle of downtown.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: It's an old downtown like you would imagine a lot
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: of place. And there's a place called Melvin's. And in
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Melvins you walk in there and it's like assembly line
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: and they'll get these burgers and they're really good burgers,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and they're not real fancy, but they're really good. They're
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: cooked well, and it's just like it's almost like the
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: skit on Saturday Night Live, you know the cheabug atchibug,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you know that kind of thing. You walk in there,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: except it's old country folk doing it. Hamburger's hot dogs
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: and you can get chips and then like a soft drink.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: That's it. And there's a line that goes but it
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: moves quick. You can get all the way to the
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: back line, need be all the way through in less
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: than ten minutes. And and and they're good. So that's
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: that's another one of those like as you would say
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: honorable mention places, it would be it is that good.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: So yeah, there's lots of places like that. For me,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: somebody said, I can only eat here when my in
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: laws are in town and it costs roughly the g
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: n B the Gross National Product of Guam. But the
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: Four Seasons makes a great brog. I bet they do.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I bet they do. And I've never had one there,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: but I bet they do. Uh Yeah, there's a different
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: there's also a different kind of level in what you're
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: paying on a specific hamburger, and for that, things like
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Casino El Camino, Great Burger's Gigantic, that's a great Burger.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Second which is on Second Street, second, and they have
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: a they have a location second in the airport.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Second.
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: Uh yes, the original location that was a great burger
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: with the milkshake.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Absolutely is a great burger. So anyway, those kinds of places. Yeah,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: if you want to weigh in with places, that's okay too.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: However you want to do it is fine, all right
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: up necks. More from Greg sank when we continue on
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: thirteen hundred zone.
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: And we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have a
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: message for Craig. Share it by using the talkback feature
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: on the iHeartRadio.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: App here some more the last part of this from
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: Greg Sankie, the SEC commissioner, And you know, being grilled
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: by the reporters there and standing right there in the
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: line of fire and taking all those questions about the
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: future of the college football playoff and also the possibility
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: of whether it's an eight game or a nine game
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: regular season conference schedule in the SEC.
- 1:11:44Speaker 17: How well do you believe you as a conference and
- 1:11:48Speaker 17: your schools, your membership are prepared to sell in July
- 1:11:52Speaker 17: first to kind of hate the ground running with the
- 1:11:54Speaker 17: new landscape.
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: I think we've prepared as well as we are able now.
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: At anytime something is new I've said this, There's going
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: to be turbulence. There's gonna be questions to be answered,
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: and our time frame is compressed between decision ipent a
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: lot of implementation work, A lot of people have spent
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: a lot of time preparing. There'll be questions under like
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: the anti circervention clause that's embedded within the settlement after
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: we go back to playmous council participatory problem solving. So
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: to the extent we can be prepared, I think we've
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: I know, we spent an incredible amount of time energy
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: across the four conferences, and you know, I think the
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: judge said said in an order on rostersize I don't
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: get ahead of this decision.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: And that's part of the there's a.
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: Healthy reminder of why we're waiting as cracially as we can.
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: You've been see I try to jump in here.
- 1:12:53Speaker 14: You've been in NCAA governance committees for thirty plus years.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: I guess right now seems to be.
- 1:12:59Speaker 14: A important time at twenty eight twenty is the socializing
- 1:13:04Speaker 14: this proposal that grants the power league sixty five percent
- 1:13:08Speaker 14: is Can you just tell us where what you view
- 1:13:11Speaker 14: your views of this proposal? I know you were on
- 1:13:12Speaker 14: the working group, but it's sixty five percent enough for.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: The power leagues to have it. I'll tell you exactly,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: do you want me to go back? Like? Do you
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: want the twenty eight years later? Please? I walked in.
- 1:13:26Speaker 6: Brittmanowski resigned this commissioner of the Southron Conference in March.
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: In April, I found myself in a Transition Management Council
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: meeting where I have no idea what the site was
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: up and down. I will say I remember an NTA
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: convention meeting with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee in San
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: Diego where we had a presentation student athletes left in
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: rythma like we I'm the Southland Commission, we have a
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: trust camp. How were we going to pivot? And you
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: know we don't.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: We don't pivot.
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: Well, there's there's a lot of people, a lot of
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: interests to be served, even in the CFP room when
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: we finished in January of twenty one, excuse me, January
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: of twenty two, when was Alabama, Georgia and Indianapolis?
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: Was that January twenty two season twenty one season.
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: Twenty two YEA, when we were at an impasse for
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: like the sixth time in that room and there were
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: eleven of us. I said, look, because the NCAA building
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: was across the street, everybody wants to point your finger
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: over there.
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: I think we've proven that we are the problem here,
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: not that. And you know through.
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: I was done participating in nca committee's pre COVID. I
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: think you know, I was on the infractions committee, shared
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: some perspective as I left, whether those were hurt or not,
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: and then kind of get you know, every time I
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: think I'm out, I get pulled back in.
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: I don't know if that's a reflection on me or
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: somebody else.
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: I fell back to trying to write an autonomy list
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: and have that back in twenty twelve twenty thirteen, when
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: I was an Associate commissioner, there were more changes it
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: could be could have been pursued. Then it goes to
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: the nca board and then it's kind of negotiated back
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: from the ask.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: I think a.
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: More autonomy had been granted then that would have been
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: healthy for the entire system, because you can go back
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: and you see where autonomy has used. I think it
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: has helped everybody cost of attendance to more medical care.
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: The Concussion Protocol came out of the autonomy process, just
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: to name a few. That doesn't mean we're perfect, but
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: I think, you know, having more autonomy would have been helpful.
- 1:15:44Speaker 6: So in this current iteration, Southeastern Conference is asked for
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: more authority and autonomy for the four conferences, and we've asked.
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: So.
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: I think there's some reporting today about authority to just depart.
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: That's not I don't have the authority of this department
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: have been voted upon. I've shared with the decision making
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: working group. I have people in my room asking why
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: are we still in the NCAA now.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: The other side of that is.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: We have thirteen teams invited to the NCAA baseball tournament today.
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: I've not been notified that anyone has declined the invitation.
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: We had fourteen men's basketball teams, nobody declined those invitations.
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: I think we have like seven of sixteen men's golf
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: teams that we're playing today on the final day of
- 1:16:31Speaker 6: stroke play. Nobody's declined those opportunities. So there's inherent value.
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: But how does the association continue to adapt? How do
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: those whose frustration level is at its highest, How maybe
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: are some of those frustrations mitigated?
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: How are some of those frustrations dealt with the process
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: of change is really exciting. At the start.
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: It's like running a mara which a few times every
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: time I've got run a marathon and you can't sleep
- 1:17:04Speaker 6: the night before, you're up early, you're at the start line.
- 1:17:08Speaker 6: The start of anything is really exciting. You go through that,
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: and then you get to the end and you see
- 1:17:13Speaker 6: you know, running down Toilston and the Boston Marathon, our
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: in Central Park in New York City, are crossing the
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: river in Missoula, Montana to finish there. I mean, it's exciting, right,
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: there's a finish line. The start and the finish is
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: always invigorating, exciting that the middle is messy, whether it's
- 1:17:31Speaker 6: a marathon, whether it's decision making, whether it's changed, and
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: we are in the middle and it's messy. That's not
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: unique to college sports, that's not unique to higher education,
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: that's not unique to American society. And so ross to
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: go back to the fundamental question, I think we would
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: like to see Maricot authority on autonomy granted under the
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: NCAA heading like to come together for championships. We think
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: that's critical important broad part of college sports. I think
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: there can be more independence and decision making. We talked
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: about an autonomy division that would be stand. It would
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: be under the NCAA heading clearly it would be linked,
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: but you'd have more authority on them. But I think
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: you reported on that in January as I recalled none
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: of my memos.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: Ever, the main secret we're at sixty five percent.
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: I think the sixty eight percent number is one that's
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: been on our mind because you can't just have somebody
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: walk away at that level among the four and everything stops.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: Others have said that's too much.
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: We'll talk through those things this week in depth see
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: where our leadership concludes as far as our feedback to
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: the decision making working group. But I've been clear within
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: the room that we are interested in this autonomy group
- 1:19:15Speaker 6: and having more authority of autonomy within the NCA structure.
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: I'd like to avoid situations where you're not allowed to
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: put spread on bagels in the future. For all the
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: finger pointing about who caused these problems, I think it's
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: naive when it's boiled down to some of the statements
- 1:19:37Speaker 6: that have been made in recent waves.
- 1:19:42Speaker 16: Commissioner of the Sticking Point of Roster limitations, tell me
- 1:19:48Speaker 16: a little bit about conversations you've had about implementing those.
- 1:19:52Speaker 16: It does feel like a sticking point to the judge's
- 1:19:55Speaker 16: decision at least of implementing roster limitations more.
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: Than a sticking point go back and re look at
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: it and then don't come back to me without doing
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: something different. So been an assignment from the judge to
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: do something different, particularly for implementation. So that's been presented,
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: I think in a way that we think can result
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: and settlement approval. But that's up to the judge. Commission
- 1:20:24Speaker 6: has dinor DENI student athletes in a few minutes or yes,
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: we got one more.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Question, can I do you go for it?
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: You wait?
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: Okay to get back to the playoff. But it also
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: I think gets to governance to a certain degree. Talking
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: about your ADS, I said, we've given up too much.
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: You're sort of again in a position of thinking about
- 1:20:44Speaker 8: the greater good of college football. That was talked about
- 1:20:47Speaker 8: a lot from other commissioners last week when there was
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: some decision on the seating. How do you balance what
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: is best for the SEC. If what is best for
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: maybe it may be giving up a little bit for
- 1:20:59Speaker 8: the SEC would be better for the whole.
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: Look at the track record. We didn't need twelve? Could
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: we state the four? We would have had half the
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: four last year. I don't need lectures from others about
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: good at the game. I don't lecture others about good
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: a game, and coordinating press release is about good to
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: the game. You know, get a okay, you can issue
- 1:21:31Speaker 6: your press statement. But I'm actually looking for ideas to
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: move us forward.
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: So Ralph, I'll go.
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: Back and say I thought the twelve team designed was
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: really well considered at the time I came to Wait,
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: we never had a unanimous about to support the twelve
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: team playoffs. Even though I was involved in that work.
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: That didn't mean everybody in this league when we were
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: at fourteen thought it was the best idea. But you
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: engage in that type of problem, solve you our eight
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: or nine game schedule. That goes back to really twenty eighteen.
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: We've been talking about eliminating divisions from twenty eighteen forward,
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: and we expanded, so it became a different conversation, and
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: the shape of that conversation has changed over time. We
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: have to make a decision, the CFP and my colleagues
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: have to understand there's something different.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: We we all played college football, And so while you
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: ask that of me.
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: I'll go back and say we we didn't need a
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: twelve teen college football playoff.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: I thought it was good for the game. I was
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: involved in that others helping out.
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: I thought it was important to get after that work
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: and a time efficient manner. Yet we held up and
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: then we went fast. We didn't go slow so we
- 1:22:59Speaker 6: could go fast. We didn't do anything, and then we
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: went fast without solving some of the other elements. I
- 1:23:08Speaker 6: have a responsibility to push as well. I think my
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: membership has a responsibility and the desire.
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: To push me.
- 1:23:14Speaker 6: And that is a hard issue if you want to
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: go inside what it's like to sit in this role.
- 1:23:20Speaker 6: I think about the responsibility I have here. I think
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: about the responsibility more broadly all the time. Yesterday I said,
- 1:23:31Speaker 6: we don't apologize here. I'm proud we have thirteen eves.
- 1:23:34Speaker 6: I wish it was fourteen in baseball. I'm proud of
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: what we did in men's basketball. I'm proud that we
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: have I think it's five of eight. It's five of
- 1:23:44Speaker 6: eight in softball. I actually think that can make other
- 1:23:49Speaker 6: people better to And when I go back to the
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: college football playoff, I'm open to ideas.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: There's just a lot of incoming.
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: My phone's not ringing off the book, but hey, here's
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: another way to look at it.
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: And so we'll continue to be thoughtful.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: We'll continue to try to provide perspective and information to
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: our members and help them guide the decisions.
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: And ultimately, I recognize I'm the one who ends.
- 1:24:16Speaker 6: Up topic in front of the podium explaining not just
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: myself and ourselves, So.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Good luck to me, good luck to him. Indeed, So
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: there it is.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: The things from the commissioner there, Greg Thanking talking about that.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: And what's really going to be interesting to see is
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: how this divide is resolved between the coaches. Coaches who
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: want the five highest ranked conference champions and the next
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: eleven at large bids that's what they want with an
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: eight game schedule. The athletic directors and the conference commissioners
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: of the other leagues want the nine game schedule in
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: order to do that, So the ads and the coaches
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: have a different look at it.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: There was one quote from Scott Strickland.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: It's funny I remember when Scott Strickland was the media
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: relations director at Baylor and he rose up through the
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: ranks became an assistant athletic director at Mississippi State, then
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: the AD, and now he's the AD at Florida, and
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: he said he cannot support a nine game league schedule
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: without guarantee playoff access to the SEC. As quote was,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: that's hard for me. There's not a sport that our
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: league competes in where less than half of our members
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: are not in the postseason except for one, and it
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: happens to be the one we all pay the most
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: attention to. Last year, three of our sixteen teams were
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: in the playoff. I think that's a problem systemically with
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: the structure of what we're trying to do.
- 1:25:59Speaker 8: Me.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: I mean, he thinks there should be more.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: But Lane Kiffin is not sold on the automatic qualifier thing.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: He said he's in favor of the sixteen best teams
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: because after seeing all the data and the analytics about
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: who would be left out in multiple models, his quote was,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: there's still flaws in every system.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: I think we all know that that's definitely going to
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: be the case.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: All Right, we have more coming up when we continue
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: on thirteen hundred the zone here on thirteen hundred zone.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: Hey, when I do the tip of the hat.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: To the area schools that have advanced to state tournament action.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: There's both in the state championship round of the softball
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: in the final four in baseball. Now, remember it's important
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: to remember this because I know there are a lot
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: of folks who are still getting used to this. It
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: is the first time and this really started. I guess
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: it's started with volleyball, but it people really took notice
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: of it during basketball and now in softball and baseball
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: that for the first time, you're only bringing the two
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: finalists to the Greater Austin area for the state champions
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: or in the case of basketball, was the alamodum because
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: they were doing it San Antonio.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: The reason for this is because.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: The Legislative Council, the UIL, that's the superintendents who from
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: across the state of Texas who are part of this
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: legislative council, voted to go split division two division state
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: champions in all sports now and all the team major
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: sports now as opposed to remember it was only in football,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: and we've gotten used to it in football with twelve
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: state champions crown in football every year. The two divisions
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: of six man, which is Class one A, Class A,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: then two divisions of two A, three A, four A,
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: five A, and six A. There are twelve total state
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: champions in football. Well, now that's the case in all sports,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: but in order to date facilities and the time schedule,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: it would mean that in those other sports now that
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: are new to this concept, they would have to play
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: their state semifinals away from Austin. In the past, we've
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: all been accustomed to a Final four coming to the
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Alamo Dome for basketball, or a Final four coming to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: the state tournament in Austin. In fact, like Travis upon
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: winning last week baseball said, like going to state, well,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: they mean state semifinalists, but they're not playing it at
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: Dell Diamond as a final four participant. That's because of
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: the way that it is set up that you only
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: have the state because you have to have instead of
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: two semi final games for that, you have to have
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: two state championship games. So, nevertheless, getting an opportunity to
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: get to state, getting to the state semifinals is imported.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: In Lake Travis is there in six A Division one
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: because we can say that now in baseball they're playing
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: in TASKASEDA and Prospering Midway.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: The other.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: Semifinalists in six A Division one. Now in terms of
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: the rest of it, in terms of area schools advancing
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Dripping Springs in six A Division two, see in the past,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: it would not have been possible for both of those
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: teams to be state semifinals because they were both not
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: only in the same division, but in the same district,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: in the same classification the same district. Well now, just
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: like you know, Westlake and Vandergriff both making it to
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: state football championship games last December, Vandergriff winning the title
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: and Westlake is the runner up, falling the North Crowley.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: That is achievable now in all of the other divisions,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: in all of the other sports. Lake Travis is in
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: the semifinals against the task of see them. And that's
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: six A Division one. And in six A Division two
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: it is Kingwood and Dripping Springs. So Drip made it
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: and that will be this weekend there in six A
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: Division two. So yet two athletic team, two baseball teams
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: making it to state semifinals in six A Lake Travis
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: in Division one, and in six A Division two Dripping
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Springs in five A. The closest team to the area
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: would be Smithson Valley, which won a state championship in football,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: so that's in five A Division one. It's funny because
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: they're in it. And then you have named like Alito,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: which is always in a Barber's Hill mckinnning north of
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: the other semifinalists in five A Division one five A
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: Division two, however, you do have an area school, Liberty Hill,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: making the final four and they're playing Kingwood Park.
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: Defending state champion.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: Grapevine is playing love Joy Lukes Lovejoy in the other semifinal.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: That's a rematch of their state championship game a year ago.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: But they're in the same division six A Division two,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: so they meet in the final four this time around.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: So in the largest classifications in six A and five
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: A you have two A you have two six A
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: state semifinalists that would be Lake Travis and six A
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Division one and Dripping Springs in six A Division two,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: and then in five A Division two you have Liberty
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Hill making it.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: In four A.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: None of the there are no area schools involved in
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: the four A state semifinals and Division one Pleasant Grove
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: against Seminole, China Spring against cal Allen.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: That's in four A Division one.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: In four A Division two, the final four includes an
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: area school, Wimberley, and congratulations of the Texans. Not only
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: did they get to the state semifinal round, but Wimberley
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: also knocked off the giant the perennial power sent and
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: coached by lifetime long. Weren't Adrian Allenes who's won a
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: state title and is taking his team to state before.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: And of course Ryland Galvan and Jacquey Stewart played on
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: that state championship team at Centon back in twenty twenty
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: two for Adrianalities, but they fell to Wimberley. And Wimberley
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: is in the final four of the play Bridge City
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: in one semifinal Brock and spring Hill the other semifinalists
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: in four A Division two. In three A Division one,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: your state semifinals are Iowa Park, Liberty, Ilo, Huntington and London,
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: which is from the Corpus Christie area. So there's no
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: area teams in three A Division one, and in three
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: A Division two it's the same story.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: You have Wall against Boyd and.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Well, no, no, no, they're all technically classifies as an area team.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: They're right there on the county line. So yeah, asolutely
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: thralls an area team. And they're playing Orange Grove in
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: the three Division two. Thrall has grown so much, such
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: a very small place, but congratulations to those Purple and
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: White Tigers. They'll play Orange Grove in the state semifinals.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: So you do have an area school, may not be
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: that local, but it's close enough. Is it's definitely area.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: And then in two A Division one you have new

- 1:33:39Speaker 1: over there, really kind of nestled a little bit in
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: the Brasses Valley. It's over there by Brenham, but still

- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Region one in region so they are doing it in
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: the state semifinals. Hamlin and Gordon in one state semifinal
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: in Region one and two, and then in Region.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: Three and four.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: Your other state semifinalists there are Brookland and Fayetteville. So
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: there it is. There's your state semifinalist in UIL baseball,
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: So congratulations to all that. We'll be back to wrap
