Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: We just had like a 5-minute long chat exclusive on
- 0:06Speaker 1: TikTok Live. We want to welcome someone who's been a
- 0:09Speaker 1: very passionate endurance athlete for a very, very long time.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Wilfred's journey has taken him all around the world, as
- 0:15Speaker 1: we have learned over the past few minutes. And how
- 0:17Speaker 1: about cycling from Singapore to KL and back to Singapore
- 0:21Speaker 1: again for a good cause. Tour de Cure as they
- 0:23Speaker 1: call it. Say hello to Wilfred in the studio.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Welcome. Good morning. Good morning. This is definitely not early
- 0:29Speaker 1: for you, right? Uh,
- 0:31Speaker 2: no, this is OK. This is
- 0:32Speaker 1: normal.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I wouldn't say middle of the day, but it's, yeah,
- 0:34Speaker 2: it's still morning.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What time do you usually wake up here in Singapore
- 0:37Speaker 1: to cycle roads before it gets busy?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Uh, I mean, enjoy the roads, nice and quiet.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And before the the heat really kicks in, I think
- 0:44Speaker 2: you would have to get up probably about, uh, you know,
- 0:46Speaker 2: 4 or 5 a.m., but uh I do a school
- 0:48Speaker 2: drop-off as well in the morning. So if I do
- 0:50Speaker 2: my training, it will be before that. So uh
- 0:52Speaker 1: yeah. So sometimes when I actually drive into work and
- 0:56Speaker 1: it's already very early, like 5-ish in the morning, right?
- 0:59Speaker 1: I noticed some people already cycling. You might be one
- 1:02Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It could be you.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It could be you. OK, so thank you for making
- 1:06Speaker 1: the time to come on down. I know tomorrow is
- 1:08Speaker 1: going to be a big day for you. That's where
- 1:10Speaker 1: you really kick off. Can you tell us a bit
- 1:12Speaker 1: more about what you're doing with uh Twitter?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. So, um, Tour the Cure is a,
- 1:17Speaker 2: is an Australian cancer research foundation that was founded in 2007.
- 1:21Speaker 2: They do a, a fundraising mainly just for cancer research.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And uh one of my teammates, uh, Jimmy, that will
- 1:27Speaker 2: be joining me tomorrow on that uh big, big ride, um,
- 1:30Speaker 2: he has joined one of their events last year. He
- 1:32Speaker 2: wanted to do that again this year, but due to
- 1:34Speaker 2: work commitments, he couldn't really make it.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Um, and I have, um, you know, sort of now
- 1:39Speaker 2: an extra motivation to join this event because my uncle
- 1:41Speaker 2: is diagnosed with both, uh, prostate cancer and, and lung cancer.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Jimmy's dad is also undergoing chemo as we speak. So,
- 1:48Speaker 2: we wanted to do something and we wanted to organize
- 1:50Speaker 2: our own sort of event and, um, Tour de Cure
- 1:53Speaker 2: was very supportive as well of us organizing our own
- 1:55Speaker 2: fundraising event. So we're gonna cycle from Singapore to KL
- 1:59Speaker 2: KL back to Singapore.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Uh, in 2 days, so it's 450 kilometers each day.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I don't know if that's their priority. I'm not sure
- 2:11Speaker 1: if food is
- 2:11Speaker 1: priority at this point.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Food will be, I mean, we have to think about
- 2:15Speaker 2: our hydration and and refuel and there'll be definitely a
- 2:17Speaker 2: lot of stops, so we'll try and make some good pace.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's why we start really early in the morning as well,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and ride a lot in the, in the morning before
- 2:23Speaker 2: the the sun comes up.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Um, but yeah, we really wanted to do something for our,
- 2:27Speaker 2: our family members and I'm pretty sure that everyone in this,
- 2:29Speaker 2: in this studio, but, you know, that you know, would
- 2:32Speaker 2: have somebody that has been impacted by cancer. Hopefully through
- 2:35Speaker 2: raising a lot of funds, and I think we're currently
- 2:36Speaker 2: at about $6500. We're trying to get to $20,000. Um.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We can raise a lot of funds for, for cancer
- 2:44Speaker 2: research and hopefully in the future, help a lot of
- 2:45Speaker 2: people try and kick out this um this terrible disease.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I, I will say that, uh, when I
- 2:51Speaker 1: knew about this, and I just want to give a
- 2:52Speaker 1: big shout out to our friends who are MG who
- 2:54Speaker 1: are one of your sponsors as well and I think,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I believe they will definitely have people there cheering you
- 2:59Speaker 1: on at the start line, at the finish line and everything. Um,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I want to
- 3:02Speaker 1: Some love to my dad who actually went through cancer
- 3:05Speaker 1: treatments just over the last couple of years. It's not easy,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but beyond the person dealing with it, it is also
- 3:12Speaker 1: about the people around that person and the caregivers. So
- 3:16Speaker 1: what would you say, like, aside from the person going
- 3:19Speaker 1: through this terrible disease, do you want to say anything
- 3:22Speaker 1: to the caregivers out there?
- 3:23Speaker 1: I think,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I mean, a massive thanks to everyone that is involved
- 3:26Speaker 2: in trying to help people through this journey. I think
- 3:29Speaker 2: it's not easy. Um, of course, you know, it's, you know,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you have the doctors that help you, you have the nurses,
- 3:34Speaker 2: you have the caretakers, you have, um, all those good
- 3:36Speaker 2: people trying to do the best they can to, to
- 3:39Speaker 2: help people and support the people. I think the other
- 3:41Speaker 2: really important thing for me as well, as you can
- 3:42Speaker 2: see on my arm as well, um, the tattoo Jia
- 3:45Speaker 2: obviously it stands for family. Family, I think is also very,
- 3:47Speaker 2: very important and
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think what we've seen through this journey, um, MG
- 3:51Speaker 2: has stepped up really in a big way um to
- 3:53Speaker 2: help us um and through the Eurocast Group as well,
- 3:56Speaker 2: but I think the other really uh big um support
- 3:59Speaker 2: for us, I guess, is, is the, the wider family
- 4:01Speaker 2: and the wider community. Pretty much everyone has, has, has
- 4:04Speaker 2: um backed us as well and, and specializes come in
- 4:06Speaker 2: a big way.
- 4:07Speaker 2: To support us. They've been a long, longtime sponsor of
- 4:09Speaker 2: the team. Um, but they've really gone over and beyond
- 4:12Speaker 2: to try and help out, make sure we have all the,
- 4:14Speaker 2: the needs and the, you know, supplies and the support
- 4:16Speaker 2: that we need in the car. If anything goes wrong, we,
- 4:18Speaker 2: we have support. Um, so, yeah, I think, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: not just the caretakers, but family as well is very important.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It's the pillar, right? It's the people you lean on
- 4:25Speaker 2: and the
- 4:26Speaker 2: They probably feel very helpless. It's a, it's a, you know, you,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you wanna do something but you don't know what you
- 4:30Speaker 2: can do. And that's I think one of the things that, that, um,
- 4:34Speaker 2: I think I've realized now through this journey and trying
- 4:36Speaker 2: to raise funds is the, the community is just so, um,
- 4:40Speaker 2: touching and important, right? So I think, yeah, massive thanks
- 4:42Speaker 2: to everyone that's been involved because
- 4:44Speaker 2: Without them, it wouldn't have been possible.
- 4:48Speaker 1: What's the packing because firstly, I perspire a lot. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think when I run, I got loads of electrolytes
- 4:54Speaker 1: and my gels and how do you keep your passport
- 4:56Speaker 1: dry?
- 4:58Speaker 2: I think that one will be as soon as we
- 4:59Speaker 2: cross the border, chuck it in the car so we
- 5:01Speaker 2: don't have it with us, yeah, it's it's a massive car,
- 5:07Speaker 2: so we have a lot of uh um extra gear there,
- 5:10Speaker 2: but I think.
- 5:11Speaker 2: So my teammate Jimmy, he's a, he's a, yeah, he
- 5:13Speaker 2: sweats profusely, so he needs a lot of extra jerseys
- 5:16Speaker 2: and a lot of extra bibs, but we have a
- 5:18Speaker 2: lot of extra jerseys yeah.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I mean,
- 5:25Speaker 2: a lot of sun protection, yeah, yeah. So like I said, right,
- 5:27Speaker 2: I love the sun but it doesn't love me back
- 5:28Speaker 2: in the same way, so I need to wear a
- 5:29Speaker 2: lot of sun protection, but um, so we'll have a
- 5:31Speaker 2: lot of extra.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Uh, long sleeve, uh, gear as well, so our current, um, um,
- 5:36Speaker 2: jersey sponsor is Attea, which is an Australian brand. They
- 5:39Speaker 2: obviously take their sun protections very seriously.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And they've also been really good in sending us additional
- 5:43Speaker 2: jerseys to wear with with long sleeves specifically made for
- 5:47Speaker 2: the the heat in Malaysia and Singapore. So that's been
- 5:49Speaker 2: also fantastic and obviously that will help us a lot
- 5:51Speaker 2: on the
- 5:51Speaker 1: way. I mean, since we're on the topic of gear, right,
- 5:54Speaker 1: Joakim and I were just having this conversation yesterday. How
- 5:57Speaker 1: do you stay on the bike for so long? Is
- 6:00Speaker 1: it not uncomfortable? I know you probably have your special,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, cushions your gear, your hamstrings, your, how do
- 6:07Speaker 1: you do it?
- 6:09Speaker 2: A lot of, a lot of uh chamois cream, so
- 6:11Speaker 2: that one will be very much uh helping as well.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I brought in a few extra tubes.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Is it do runners use that too?
- 6:18Speaker 1: Runners,
- 6:19Speaker 2: runners, cyclists, they know the drill. It's yeah, but that
- 6:22Speaker 2: one will have to be replenished quite a bit, yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And I
- 6:24Speaker 1: want to ask another fun question. You know, I think
- 6:28Speaker 1: for people who are doing high rocks and 2 times
- 6:30Speaker 1: this weekend, you would know that when you train, you
- 6:33Speaker 1: invest so much in your jerseys and running shoes. Wilfred,
- 6:36Speaker 1: how much have you invested in your bike so far already?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Uh, well, actually, a big shout out to Specialized. They, uh, again,
- 6:42Speaker 2: they are one of our big sponsors and they, um,
- 6:44Speaker 2: asked me what bike am I gonna use and the
- 6:46Speaker 2: bike that I have is, um, is slightly older model.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I still love that bike a lot. Um, but I
- 6:51Speaker 2: guess it was, it would be a bit of a
- 6:52Speaker 2: harsh ride because it's really a race-specific bike. So for
- 6:55Speaker 2: that long journey, uh, probably not ideal. So, um, they
- 6:58Speaker 2: quickly said, what about we get you a brand spanking
- 7:01Speaker 2: new bike and spec it as, to make it as
- 7:04Speaker 2: comfortable for you as possible.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Um, which is a, it's a specialized Rube SL8, which
- 7:09Speaker 2: is one of the newest models that they have. Um, and, um, yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 2: that's been amazing and, and one of the good things
- 7:14Speaker 2: as well is that, I'll be using that on the,
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'll be using that on the ride and then after
- 7:18Speaker 2: the ride, we'll be, um, or specialized we'll help sell
- 7:21Speaker 2: that off and part of the proceeds will go to
- 7:22Speaker 2: the charity as well. So
- 7:23Speaker 1: it's it's a very great,
- 7:26Speaker 2: but uh,
- 7:26Speaker 1: yeah. So you've received the bike. Yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I've ridden it a bit, so I rode some miles
- 7:31Speaker 2: making sure that it's comfortable.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Uh, you know, the, the worst thing you can do,
- 7:35Speaker 2: like any runner or any endurance athlete will say is, oh,
- 7:37Speaker 2: use new stuff just
- 7:38Speaker 1: before the race. It's a big no,
- 7:39Speaker 1: no, I
- 7:41Speaker 2: had
- 7:41Speaker 1: to,
- 7:42Speaker 2: had to, I had to use it. So I went
- 7:43Speaker 2: for a longish ride on, on Sunday on the bike
- 7:45Speaker 2: and it's been really, really good. I think it will
- 7:47Speaker 2: help a lot on this journey.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's a beautiful bike as well. So for
- 7:51Speaker 2: anyone who is listening or seeing it in in some
- 7:53Speaker 2: of the footage in the coming days, if they're really keen,
- 7:56Speaker 2: go to the, go to the store and have a
- 7:57Speaker 2: look once it's, uh, once we finish the ride, and, um,
- 8:00Speaker 2: and it will be available, but it's a, yeah, it's
- 8:02Speaker 2: a great bike. I
- 8:03Speaker 1: can feel that actually, you know, your reaction when you
- 8:06Speaker 1: open up the bike or actually saw it for the
- 8:08Speaker 1: first time might be very different from the reaction you're
- 8:10Speaker 1: giving us on air right now. You might have been
- 8:12Speaker 1: like a small like,
- 8:13Speaker 1: oh, this is so cool
- 8:14Speaker 2: like a kid in the candy store.
- 8:16Speaker 1: If I buy a new pair of running shoes, I
- 8:18Speaker 1: will sniff it like.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You will sniff your showcase. Thank you for letting us
- 8:23Speaker 1: know that you can sniff your running shoe and it's
- 8:25Speaker 1: brand new because after the first run, that's it. Please don't, yeah. OK,
- 8:28Speaker 1: so take us to um the event starting tomorrow. How's
- 8:32Speaker 1: it gonna be like? Lead us through it and then
- 8:34Speaker 1: how do we support as people who may not be
- 8:37Speaker 1: able to be physically there. Yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 2: exactly. So, uh, I mean, again, uh, the MG has
- 8:41Speaker 2: been really good in providing the follow vehicle with all
- 8:44Speaker 2: the needs that we, that we need on this, on
- 8:46Speaker 2: this journey.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It's amazing. So we'll flag off and start at 3 a.m.,
- 8:49Speaker 2: which is a bit early. So for those that can't join,
- 8:51Speaker 2: no worries. Yeah, yes, please, yes, please. So we start
- 8:55Speaker 2: at 3 a.m., um, uh, from the MG showroom at
- 8:59Speaker 2: Langy Road, um, and, uh Alexandra. So then hopefully we
- 9:05Speaker 2: get to the border at, uh, at, you know, in
- 9:07Speaker 2: about 40, 45 minutes to an hour's time, um, and then, uh,
- 9:10Speaker 2: hopefully get as many miles in before the sun.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Comes out, so hopefully by about midday we'll be at
- 9:16Speaker 2: uh Malacca, hopefully, um, we'll be stopping over there at
- 9:19Speaker 2: the at the MG showroom as well, so that'll be
- 9:21Speaker 2: nice to refuel, uh, recharge the car because it's an
- 9:24Speaker 2: electric car, so we need some more juice. We need
- 9:27Speaker 2: to refuel as well, so we get some meal and
- 9:29Speaker 2: uh and uh yeah, we can drink some uh some
- 9:31Speaker 2: um some isotonic, electrolytes, etc. and then we're on our
- 9:35Speaker 2: way to uh to KL and then um at the hopefully.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Evening time we'll arrive, then the morning after we'll be
- 9:42Speaker 2: uh leaving again about 4 a.m. to uh again beat
- 9:44Speaker 2: the traffic, beat the heat, uh, and then make our
- 9:47Speaker 2: way to, to Singapore will be
- 9:49Speaker 1: streamed,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, there'll be some shots on
- 9:55Speaker 2: our uh SG Mavericks or the Mavericks my team. They will,
- 9:58Speaker 2: they will do some jersey.
- 10:00Speaker 2: We'll do some, uh, some footage, uh, I think, um,
- 10:02Speaker 2: the Eurocast group and both MG also probably have some
- 10:04Speaker 2: shots here and there. Lovely, um, and, um, I'll take
- 10:07Speaker 2: my Apple Air tag as well so we have a
- 10:09Speaker 2: live location we can share and say, hey, this is where, where,
- 10:13Speaker 2: where they are now and how they're going.
- 10:15Speaker 1: This might be a question for me it's the weekend,
- 10:18Speaker 1: it might be quite jammed at the Causeway.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Because
- 10:31Speaker 1: it's a long weekend, Singapore. I think they're leaving at
- 10:32Speaker 1: an early enough
- 10:33Speaker 1: timing.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's early enough on Thursday because Thursday is still a
- 10:35Speaker 2: school day and a work day, so I think it's OK.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And then Friday on the way back in should still
- 10:40Speaker 2: be OK because everybody wants to go out.
- 10:41Speaker 1: OK,
- 10:42Speaker 1: so tell us, how can we help you?
- 10:43Speaker 1: with the fundraising, for example, you said you have a
- 10:45Speaker 1: goal of $20,000. Is there a site you can
- 10:48Speaker 1: share with us?
- 10:48Speaker 2: We
- 10:48Speaker 1: have a link
- 10:49Speaker 2: uh that uh I, uh, I will share as well
- 10:52Speaker 2: where people can donate. It's super easy. I think it's
- 10:54Speaker 2: probably one of the best user experiences that I've ever seen.
- 10:56Speaker 2: It's 3 clicks and you, you can donate. You don't
- 10:59Speaker 2: have to even think about the currency because it's an
- 11:01Speaker 2: Australian charity, but you don't have to think about it.
- 11:03Speaker 2: You put $100 Sing dollars, it will do everything else
- 11:05Speaker 2: for you.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Um, so it's very easy. That link can be shared, uh,
- 11:08Speaker 2: and we'll be sharing that across our journey as well,
- 11:10Speaker 2: so people can hopefully donate as much as possible and,
- 11:12Speaker 2: and support this great cause.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Nice. Really hope that you achieve everything you want to achieve,
- 11:16Speaker 1: maybe even, um, surpass $20,000 out there. Fingers crossed. Thank
- 11:21Speaker 1: you for doing what you're doing and a big shout
- 11:22Speaker 1: out to your key sponsors, Specialized, our friends over at
- 11:25Speaker 1: MG Eurocars as well.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And many, many more I'm sure that are coming on
- 11:29Speaker 1: board to partner. Anything else? Last words that you want
- 11:32Speaker 1: to add in before we let you go on your
- 11:34Speaker 1: two-day long journey?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Uh, no, just thanks everyone for their support. Really, really
- 11:38Speaker 2: appreciate it and uh yeah, let's make this a big
- 11:39Speaker 2: community event and and get behind this. So yeah, thanks
- 11:42Speaker 1: for thanks for you guys for
- 11:44Speaker 1: having me.
- 11:46Speaker 2: All the best.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Thank you sending you love.
