- 1:02pod. Welcome.
- 1:03Thank. You Oh my God, it's so nice to
- 1:06be here with. You.
- 1:06It is so nice to be here with you too.
- 1:08I'm psyched to talk about this movie with a new girlfriend.
- 1:12Yes, because there's so much to talk.
- 1:14About. I know.
- 1:15And there's something so delightful about having a new
- 1:19friend. Yeah.
- 1:21Couldn't agree more. Yeah, we have a lot of ground to
- 1:23cover. Oh my God.
- 1:24From a friendship stand point, from talking and I think
- 1:26starting to talk about this movie is a good foundation for
- 1:30us. I agree.
- 1:32A friend. This is like this is big for us
- 1:34and if nobody watches or listens to this I don't care but please
- 1:39do continue listening and watching it.
- 1:41I do I. Really think they're gonna like
- 1:43it too. Kelly, what's new with you?
- 1:44What are you? What's going on?
- 1:47You're back from France. I'm back from.
- 1:48France. I took myself on a 40th birthday
- 1:53trip and I went out in full, as much sparkle and pizzazz as
- 2:00possible. I rented A Chateau for 20 of my
- 2:03friends and family. So fun and had the most
- 2:06wholesome, wonderful, creative, spacious time.
- 2:11And now I'm back and I am feeling so creative and it's
- 2:16getting poured into my art and my work and it feels really
- 2:20good. That makes me so happy.
- 2:22Thank you. And I loved the I loved the
- 2:26visual art that came out of your trip.
- 2:28Yes to France. Felt like I was there looking
- 2:31out a window. I love that.
- 2:32Yeah, travel is like such an expansive thing for me.
- 2:37I mean, talk about just being a different place to train
- 2:40perspective and Oh my gosh, I I, I just love how I'm thinking
- 2:46right now. I feel so expansive, just like
- 2:49being out like in the sunflower fields, but like here in Denver.
- 2:53But like in this mind, it's feeling good.
- 2:55Oh. My God that's beautiful.
- 2:58Everyone take yourself on a trip please if you can.
- 3:01And bring some friends. Take your friends.
- 3:04And like, I promise. Like it's scary because like, I
- 3:07didn't think I could plan a trip like this and my friends didn't
- 3:10think they could go on a trip like this and we.
- 3:13All were gonna say your friends didn't think you could either.
- 3:15Well, yeah, I mean, that's that. Would be true as well.
- 3:18Yeah, yeah. I mean, I did lose our
- 3:20passports. Look like we've got it.
- 3:22Like things got real. It wasn't gonna be.
- 3:25It wasn't gonna be perfect, certainly.
- 3:27Real life it's. Real life, It's life, everyone.
- 3:30We're not here to sell you on the idea that you're not gonna
- 3:33lose your passport. That is a possibility.
- 3:35That is, that is possible. But don't, don't, guys don't
- 3:38just need to leave them just to just don't carry them around.
- 3:41It's a very simple yeah. You really just put them in the
- 3:43safe. That's what they say to do.
- 3:46We're living and learning day after day.
- 3:48I once dated someone who lost his driver's license and he
- 3:52carried his passport with him everywhere as like a form of ID
- 3:55and I thought that thing's getting lost.
- 3:58That that could end poorly. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:00That was just, you know, locally.
- 4:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. So leave your, leave your
- 4:05passports at home. No, what's going on with kind
- 4:08and funny? Gosh, I'm.
- 4:11Three years into being my own boss and running my own branding
- 4:16agency and God, it gets better with age, to be honest.
- 4:21So cool. I just learned so much through
- 4:24experience and having three years under my belt.
- 4:27Like, I've just learned so much about kind of my work and where
- 4:32I can really help people shine, and that feels really good.
- 4:36So cool, yeah. And I have my best friend, my
- 4:41Boo as my business partner. And so, like doing that together
- 4:45is, is pretty special. Yeah.
- 4:47He's he's a real cool guy. He says hi, by the way.
- 4:51Oh my God, tell him I said hi too.
- 4:53He's coming to my party on. Oh yeah, Oh yeah, we're ready to
- 4:56rage. All right, good listeners.
- 4:59If you if you haven't heard the party of the century is
- 5:03happening, you will it will be probably 2 weeks in the past by
- 5:08the time that you hear this. And so if you never hear from us
- 5:11again, you know why? You know why?
- 5:14OK, so you suggested this movie Girls just want to have fun 1985
- 5:21teen dance movie. Tell me why.
- 5:25Yeah, well, it all starts around 92, I would say.
- 5:30OK, my dad owned a video store. So cool.
- 5:36And that meant I had I could watch any and every movie that
- 5:41was under PG13 of my dreams. Absolutely, And I did.
- 5:45Yeah, you did. I did, and when I got to this
- 5:48film, it was a game changer. OK, it was a game changer.
- 5:54I saw myself and the character I was.
- 5:57I was at Catholic school, so we had a lot of you and Janie,
- 6:01yeah, we had a lot of commonality from the start.
- 6:04And I was I and still am such a visual learner.
- 6:10Yeah. I realized on the rewatch, like
- 6:13how much I learned from these characters at that age.
- 6:16OK. About your visual aesthetic.
- 6:20About like friendship. Yeah.
- 6:23Like the characters are like high school age, right?
- 6:27And I was probably watching this in my preteens, so I got to kind
- 6:31of get this glimpse into a world of like how to create really
- 6:34cool friendship. Like, I don't know, I I saw
- 6:37myself and these people a lot both then and now.
- 6:41Yeah, you know why? Because you're a girls girl.
- 6:44I am, I am. And I'm pretty sure it was this
- 6:47movie that, like, taught me the basics.
- 6:49Yeah. When you what?
- 6:51What is it that the little brother tells Janie?
- 6:54Like when you when you run into trouble, you got to rally the
- 6:57troops or whatever? Yes.
- 6:59Yeah. God.
- 6:59And you really do. You do.
- 7:01And these girls did. And like, the Helen Hunt
- 7:05character is just like, so epic. Oh yeah.
- 7:08Oh my God. Like she believes in Janie's
- 7:11dream before. Like Janie believes it herself.
- 7:14And having a friend like that, yeah, is like a special, special
- 7:19gift. Totally.
- 7:20Yeah. When you when you find a person
- 7:22who really likes the one thing that you really like.
- 7:27Oh, oh, gosh. And then the rest is time stops,
- 7:29Time stops, stops. And she saw her from across the
- 7:33classroom and she said you yes, you are going to be my friend.
- 7:37It was I love to dance. Oh, oh, it's so good.
- 7:43It's so good. That's so good.
- 7:45This movie was directed by the same guy who did Back to School,
- 7:50which was kind of interesting to me.
- 7:53I guess that's kind of AI don't know.
- 7:56It's a comedy as well, but I really don't see a lot of
- 8:01crossover in these in these films.
- 8:04I kind of said what? I haven't seen the other one.
- 8:08Back to school. Yeah.
- 8:09Is that something that I should dabble in?
- 8:11My dad really likes it. So if you are curious about
- 8:16like, you know my dad's taste in movies.
- 8:18Yeah, well, I'm kind of now that I'm on like in this era too,
- 8:22like mid 80s, like I could see a little, I could see more of the
- 8:25culture there. Yeah, OK.
- 8:27I'll check it out. OK, yeah, check it out, see if
- 8:28you like it. And if you don't like it, don't
- 8:30blame me. No, I will.
- 8:31I will have words with your dad though.
- 8:34Oh, I know you will. As you should kick it.
- 8:37But overall, when this movie came out critics said it's not
- 8:43good and the box office said yeah, it's not that good.
- 8:48It was not beloved when it came out, but they ran it on cable.
- 8:53So this is like one of those movies that ran on cable so much
- 8:56that eventually it just developed a cult following.
- 8:58People were just like, well, yeah, I guess we like this
- 9:02because we see it all the time. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:04I mean that does that plays a. Role.
- 9:07It certainly does. But you have to be able to see
- 9:09it in order to appreciate it. That's.
- 9:10True. And it has to be forced to you
- 9:12on cable. Yeah, in many cases, right.
- 9:15And I wonder, like, what's the equivalent of that now?
- 9:17Is it in like your Netflix recommended or like the top ten
- 9:22watch today? Like what is the thing that's
- 9:24like getting bad movies in our faces to eventually turn them
- 9:28into cult classes? 100% like what's it's the top
- 9:3010. Yeah, it's got to be.
- 9:32Absolutely. The amount of.
- 9:35Garbage. Yeah, I was going to say trash,
- 9:37but garbage sounds so much more, so much gentler.
- 9:41Yeah, that like, Oh yeah, this has got.
- 9:44To be like, yeah, everybody, you're like, everyone's watching
- 9:46it. Oh boy.
- 9:49But I mean, it's water cooler talk, right Like that.
- 9:52That's usually what gets me through.
- 9:53If it is bad, it's like, OK, I'll at least like we can, we
- 9:57can talk about this with all the other 100 million people that
- 10:00have watched it. Exactly.
- 10:02And then you have something to, you know, if you eventually do
- 10:06find the one thing that you really like, and then you're in
- 10:09a classroom and there's another girl who's like, oh, I love this
- 10:12thing. And then time stops.
- 10:13And then you can be best friends.
- 10:15Yeah, we know how this works now.
- 10:16We've seen it models and we're like we're ready to implement.
- 10:20But we have to go through so many bad shows and movies in
- 10:24order to get there. We do.
- 10:26Yeah, yeah, it's good. And it's, I feel like it's
- 10:28getting harder too. Yeah.
- 10:30Totally. Which is wild because it's so
- 10:33hard to get anything made. Yeah.
- 10:35And then I see the things that are getting made.
- 10:37I'm like, how'd they how and why did they do that?
- 10:40Oh yes, I asked myself that many a time.
- 10:46As creative people, we must constantly be asking the
- 10:50question, why not me? But actually, why not?
- 10:53You know? Yeah.
- 10:55Yeah, like why? Why not?
- 10:57Why? Why?
- 10:58I mean, that's pretty much what how I started my business.
- 11:01Yeah, I mean I asked myself and that's how I became an artist.
- 11:04I think like the continued ask, yeah, yeah, why not me is a is a
- 11:11big one. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:13And you got it. And then I do it.
- 11:14Yeah, but then also the the flip side of that coin unfortunately
- 11:19is but why them, why'd they get it?
- 11:21Yeah, that, that is a that's a slippery slope.
- 11:24That's slippery. We don't.
- 11:25We don't want to go there. But that's one thing I liked
- 11:28about the two best friends in this movie is that they weren't
- 11:32competitive with each other. No.
- 11:34I mean, they were competitive against like the the little rich
- 11:37girl. Of course, yes, of course they
- 11:40had to have. They had to have an enemy.
- 11:41Yeah, the yeah, the villain and the stakes in this is also kind
- 11:45of a highlight of mine. Yeah.
- 11:46Just like they are low, the stakes are low.
- 11:49The stakes could not be lower. Yeah, the conflict is minor.
- 11:54Yeah. The conflict is we don't like
- 11:56her because she's rich and she calls her dad daddy and he calls
- 12:00her Princess, which I hate. Yes, Yeah, yes.
- 12:04And that's kind of the extent of it.
- 12:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:07But this was this was kind of the early stage of Sarah Jessica
- 12:12Parker's career. So interesting to see stars
- 12:17before they were really who they are now.
- 12:22So interesting to see SJP as a Catholic schoolgirl.
- 12:27Kind of like meek, shy. She's like, oh, I don't know, I
- 12:30guess I just love to dance. Yeah, I, I mean, I, I've been a
- 12:35fan of her since this, since watching this and so obviously
- 12:39went through the Sex and the City stage and era.
- 12:42And I I definitely see like parts of that of her and that
- 12:46character. Like there still is this like
- 12:50need and want for self-expression that like
- 12:52obviously basically a lot of her characters like have totally.
- 12:56And I think this I think it's cool to have this as a starting
- 12:59point for kind of that as and the self-expression in this case
- 13:03is like the dance and the right. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:05Totally, and also just like in finding a friend.
- 13:12Like it seems as though she's never had friends before.
- 13:14Yeah, yeah, military kid move in every every year.
- 13:19And yeah, it's, it's so cool that what's Helen Hunt's
- 13:24character? 'S name.
- 13:25Her name is. I always forget I.
- 13:28Know character names are. Tough.
- 13:29I know it is tough. Janie and what?
- 13:32Lynn, Lynn, Janie and Lynn, yes. Yeah, I don't, I do not remember
- 13:38what I was saying that was that would happen.
- 13:42You were saying that. OK, so we were talking about how
- 13:45she moved all the time. She's never had a best friend.
- 13:47Oh yeah. And OK, so I love how it's Len
- 13:50who like, like kind of reels her in because I think it's clear
- 13:55that she's used to not making many friends.
- 13:57So like, the fact that, like, her shock of when, like, Lynn
- 14:02talks to her on the bus and like, changes her outfit, like,
- 14:06yeah, I think that was the starting point of something
- 14:09truly magical. Truly, yeah.
- 14:11There is still kind of this question in my head, though,
- 14:14where I'm like, why did Lynn latch on to her?
- 14:17Was it simply because she said Like, I love to dance like.
- 14:22You know, I think I think that that shared dream at that age
- 14:26and I think like, from what I'm gathering from the setting, like
- 14:31the Catholic school, the choir, like this is so different than
- 14:35that, you know, that, you know, private school, it's kind of a
- 14:39punk type of thing. Yeah, totally.
- 14:41And so maybe that was like not common for Len to see.
- 14:46Yeah, She's like, I can make her kind of, you know, kind of a bad
- 14:51girl like me. Not even a yeah, but it just
- 14:54like a little bit of a yeah. It's like a little bit punk to
- 14:56be like I'm skipping class. Right.
- 14:58And I think it's so funny, like, Speaking of punk, like the whole
- 15:01punk scene of, you know, Oh my God, they're crashing through.
- 15:04It's so funny that these are like the Catholic schoolgirl
- 15:07pucks. Totally.
- 15:08And I think like, that's how I saw myself because I was like, I
- 15:13was not a real punk at all. I was the Catholic schoolgirl
- 15:17that like followed the rules. So it was so cool to see a
- 15:23different way, but also like still kind of wholesome.
- 15:26I mean, minus the fact that they really ruined that party and
- 15:29like. Yeah, but like, that party
- 15:31needed to be ruined. I mean.
- 15:32It was, I thought that it was cool how she, like, truly
- 15:37orchestrated chaos. Yes.
- 15:39And just sort of watched it all burn.
- 15:41You know, she's sort of the popster who said I'm just gonna,
- 15:45you know, I'm gonna light this grenade, throw it and then walk
- 15:48away. Yeah.
- 15:49Yeah. Power move.
- 15:51A real power. Move.
- 15:52I mean, and I guess that's what really, like, changed the
- 15:54dynamic with the dude, you know, like he finally was like, Oh
- 15:59yeah, this chick has different sides to her.
- 16:02Yeah, she's not just your average Catholic.
- 16:05School girl. She loves to dance and she'll
- 16:08stir it. Up.
- 16:09Yeah, totally. If you're trying to like, ruin
- 16:13her chances with blackmail and just being rich.
- 16:16Yeah. Blame, blame.
- 16:21One thing that really kind of rocked me when I was looking up
- 16:25a little bit of the background of this movie was that Cyndi
- 16:28Lauper was not on board. She was like, hey, actually I
- 16:34don't want to appear in this film.
- 16:36You can't use my version of the song.
- 16:37So they had to buy the original 1979 song and title from the
- 16:43songwriter, and then they weren't allowed to, like, make
- 16:49any of the changes that Lopper had made to the song, including
- 16:52like, several lyrics that were changed and added.
- 16:55So that's why it sort of sounds like the the Kirkland brand.
- 17:00I was actually shocked. I was shocked.
- 17:02I hadn't seen it in so long. So I was expecting the Cyndi
- 17:07Lopper version, the opening. And I was like, oh.
- 17:09They're like, oh, this is that kind of the off brand this is.
- 17:12Kirkland, yeah. But they really, I mean, this is
- 17:18the type of movie where you think like, oh, did they reverse
- 17:21engineer this? Like, they thought of the title
- 17:23of a movie and then made a movie.
- 17:24And the answer is yes. Yeah, they really did.
- 17:27They were like, oh, well, this song's really popular.
- 17:29Let's make a movie Inspired by what?
- 17:31Girls just want to have fun. Girls having fun.
- 17:34Let's see what we can do with that.
- 17:36They did it and they did it. Kelly, were you a dancer ever?
- 17:41Did you do any like performance? I dabbled in dance.
- 17:45I went through like a performance era, I would say
- 17:47probably around the same time, like preteen, yeah.
- 17:53So definitely have appreciation for it.
- 17:55Always like, loved dancing and watching dancing was big into
- 18:01musicals and kind of like big spectacle scenes.
- 18:05So seeing this like in a teen film setting, I mean, that was
- 18:10new for me because I was used to seeing these like music scenes
- 18:15and like these outdated musicals, you know.
- 18:19So this was like a new thing for me.
- 18:22But yeah, I've I've always had an appreciation for dance.
- 18:26And honestly, I think this movie, like I'm saying like
- 18:28pretty much built my entire personality on it so.
- 18:33I will say for a dance movie, I still feel like there wasn't
- 18:36enough dancing. They didn't do really like the
- 18:39classic, like we're practicing dance montage until like the
- 18:43last 20 minutes of How. Good.
- 18:45Is that montage excellent? I know it.
- 18:48I know. When you get it though, it's
- 18:50like, thank God, it's like. Finally, I'm like, I'm thinking
- 18:53we're not going to see people dance again until the tryout.
- 18:56You're right, we needed more Dance it.
- 18:58Was like, we had dance in the beginning.
- 19:00Yeah, we had dance at the end, in the middle.
- 19:03Not enough. No.
- 19:04And I mean, I feel like it's unfair that I keep comparing
- 19:09this movie to Dirty Dancing, but truly, how could you not when
- 19:12it's the same formula except not as good as Dirty Dancing?
- 19:17Unfortunately, I. Have a horrible secret?
- 19:20Oh my God, you haven't seen it. And here's the thing.
- 19:24Thank you for saying I. Like I can't like, pretend my
- 19:27way out of this. Like, I mean, I've, I've done
- 19:30that in the past, yeah, where it doesn't go well.
- 19:32So I'm just toning it, think I'm proud of it.
- 19:36No, but they've not proud of it. Thank you for saying it before.
- 19:38I just kind of went off the rails and was like, you know
- 19:41what I mean? And you would have to say yes,
- 19:43Molly, I know what you mean. That part.
- 19:45Is so good. Yeah, well, let me, I'll tell
- 19:49you what. If you like girls just want to
- 19:51have fun, OK, You're gonna love Dirty Dancing because it's very
- 19:56similar to this but kind of just way better.
- 19:59Just way better. Yeah.
- 20:01You know, I think I've intentionally saved some
- 20:03classics for me to watch. Yeah.
- 20:07Like now, Yeah. You know, with a, a different
- 20:10brain, like more, more life experience.
- 20:13So like maybe? Maybe that's what I'm doing
- 20:16tonight. Oh my God, I hope it is.
- 20:18That sounds so fun. That would bring me so much joy
- 20:22if you watch that tonight. OK, well let let me know what
- 20:25you think so I can also let the listeners know.
- 20:28Great, OK, great. Oh future me is so excited.
- 20:32We're we'll talk about this on Friday.
- 20:34We'll talk about this, but basically, like the thing that I
- 20:41compare this to in regards to Dirty Dancing is of course,
- 20:44there's like there's a girl who's a little bit shy.
- 20:50She's sort of a classic, like wealthy good girl.
- 20:55And then there's like this bad boy who's like, I'm working
- 20:58class and I'm hot and my parents never know where I am.
- 21:05Nutbar and the montage, like kind of the classic montage of
- 21:11Dirty Dancing is very, very iconic, particularly because of
- 21:17the chemistry between the two lead actors who in reality, like
- 21:23couldn't stand each other. But but their characters could,
- 21:26yeah. And there's even a scene where,
- 21:30sorry, now we're talking about Dirty Dancing and you haven't
- 21:32seen it, but I'm just so. Excited.
- 21:34It's prepping me. I'm ready.
- 21:36There's a scene where where Patrick Swayze is sort of like,
- 21:41he's behind Jennifer Gray, and he's, like, moving his arm,
- 21:44like, down her body, but she's really ticklish.
- 21:47And she keeps, like, laughing. And he keeps getting frustrated.
- 21:50Yes. And that frustration was, like,
- 21:52real. Yeah.
- 21:53It was like, that was not acting.
- 21:54He was, like, getting really annoyed.
- 21:56And so then they just used it. Amazing.
- 22:00Yeah, You can't fake that. You just can't fake that kind of
- 22:03annoyance. So anyway, but the finally, once
- 22:09we get the dance montage, I'm like, OK, yes, we got it.
- 22:12Yeah, we finally we did. Yeah.
- 22:15One thing I also love is that you cannot get more literal than
- 22:20dance TV. Oh yeah.
- 22:22That is the name of the show. It's as if this screenwriter was
- 22:25like, OK, we're gonna for now. Yeah, Well, I think of a better
- 22:29name. This is dance TV.
- 22:31And they just said, you know what, Dance TV, we call it DTV.
- 22:35I mean, sometimes like the first idea is the best.
- 22:39That's true. We don't have to overcomplicate
- 22:41everything. No, we don't.
- 22:43And especially thinking about the audience of like a 7 or 8
- 22:46year old watching it, I appreciated it for sure.
- 22:49Like, oh, that's dance TV. That's what you do.
- 22:51You dance. This is APG movie.
- 22:57We need to make sure that the kids understand.
- 22:59I saw, you know, I saw this movie when I was pretty young,
- 23:02too. I was in elementary school.
- 23:03I was at a sleepover. And I haven't seen it since
- 23:07then. This is the first time I had
- 23:08watched it in like, 25 years. Yeah.
- 23:12How was the experience? Oh, I loved it.
- 23:14Yeah, Yeah. Did you remember watching it as
- 23:19the the child? I remembered, like I remembered
- 23:26that I was like, Oh no, is she gonna win the competition?
- 23:30Yes, Yes. Because that is kind of the
- 23:32perspective of, you know, a, a child watching.
- 23:36A this movie, it was crucial. You're right.
- 23:38Yeah. Like we gotta.
- 23:40We gotta and watching it as an adult, like I I didn't remember
- 23:45a lot. So it's like once they they
- 23:47introduced like the public school boys, I was like, well,
- 23:51obviously I know where this is going.
- 23:53And then when they introduced like the bitchy rich girl, I was
- 23:57like, we know where this is going.
- 23:59And then the moment that she tells Lynn, oh, my dad is really
- 24:03strict, I was like, I know where this is going.
- 24:05And it all turned out that way. There's not a ton of.
- 24:09Surprises. No, not a lot of surprises.
- 24:14Although wait, I think there is lens fashion.
- 24:18Oh yeah. I don't know if you watched it
- 24:22as obsessively, but like sure. I mean iconic like her and I
- 24:27remember actually watching especially like she wears some
- 24:30kind of like lizard hat or like. Grasshopper hat.
- 24:33Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's just like at the
- 24:35time it was like something, I mean, I still have never seen
- 24:38that in real life. And never seen anything like
- 24:40that I think. I like I there were a lot of
- 24:44surprises when it came to fashion, so yeah, that kept me
- 24:48engaged. Yes, absolutely.
- 24:50From scene to scene you say, what am I going to get next?
- 24:53Plot wise we knew or was going but we had no idea what the
- 24:56fits. What will she be wearing?
- 24:58Yeah. Which is really impressive for a
- 24:59movie where they spend a lot of their time at school in
- 25:02uniforms, You know, for them to keep us guessing all the time.
- 25:06Pretty impressive. You know, something that Janie
- 25:09says that I think is timeless is anytime that she's in a room
- 25:13with any person, whether it's her dentist or her boyfriend or
- 25:17whatever, she and she has to ask herself, if we were the last two
- 25:20people on earth, would I puke if he kissed me?
- 25:23That is so fucking funny. I loved her.
- 25:27That was the moment I said I like this girl.
- 25:29Oh, yeah, yes. I mean, I, when I heard that
- 25:34this time, I remember like, Oh yeah.
- 25:36Like, I had no idea what that was at the time.
- 25:39Like, I, I wasn't kissing right back then.
- 25:42And so watching it now, it's just God, she's a great
- 25:45character. Yeah, she really is.
- 25:47She really is. Ride or die.
- 25:49She's a ride or die. Yeah, we love that about her.
- 25:54OK, so let's talk about the character that I think ages the
- 25:58worst, and that is that little twerp.
- 26:00Yeah. What?
- 26:01What is his name? Jeff.
- 26:05No, Jeff's the Hot 1. Jeff is, yeah, the friend of
- 26:09Jeff. Yeah, Jeff's friend.
- 26:11What's Jeff's friend's name? He's like the the guy selling
- 26:15swag. We're gonna we're just gonna
- 26:17call him Twerp for now, is what I'm gonna call him Drew.
- 26:20Is that him Drew? OK, so Drew is kind of the
- 26:24quintessential 1980s quote, harmless boy simply because he
- 26:30is like a geek. A geek.
- 26:33But he is so predatory and gross, slimy.
- 26:39Just every time he walked into the room, I went oh.
- 26:42This guy, yes, I was yes. One thing I will say which is
- 26:46quite obvious about most of the movie, like the characters are
- 26:51quite flat in one-dimensional. Certainly his is the worst kind
- 26:55of that because it's like, oh God, we have to listen to this
- 26:58guy talk again because we know like nothing good is coming out
- 27:02of it. No, but it's played as like, oh,
- 27:06isn't he just such a funny little?
- 27:09Geek like he's supposed to be the like the funny.
- 27:12Yeah, he's supposed to be the Comic Relief, like, oh, this
- 27:14guy, you know, he's not hot. So he can be, he can be as
- 27:19creepy as he wants to women and they'll and they'll reject him
- 27:22and it's funny. Yeah, that's that character was
- 27:26a real downer. Oh, real downer. 2 thumbs down.
- 27:30Two thumbs down. He's always looking.
- 27:32He's looking down dresses. He's looking up dresses.
- 27:36He is. He is being creepy to everybody.
- 27:41Everyone, I, I put myself in my like 7 year old body like
- 27:46watching this film and I, I, the, the, the scene where he's
- 27:52just so horrible and like objectifies the woman, like she
- 27:56reacts like, like horrified, like hits him with the purse.
- 27:59And I think about that scene of like, at least like I was taught
- 28:04that this behavior is repulsive. Like, you know, even though it
- 28:08was reiterated over and over again, like there was some,
- 28:11like, no, like, you can't treat women like this.
- 28:14Right, like you will eventually be, you will be like punished.
- 28:18There will be like consequences for your actions, but the the
- 28:22actions and their consequences were both like kind of like,
- 28:26well, you know he doesn't mean anything by.
- 28:28It the consequences were not in that film like like as they
- 28:32should be, which is like arrest this guy, get him off the
- 28:35street, but like. Get him out of here.
- 28:37Get him out of my sight. Yeah, yeah, 80. 5 That was
- 28:42clearly a 1985 situation. Exactly.
- 28:47We see this all the time in 80s movies where it's like, well,
- 28:51he's on. I mean, we still see it now
- 28:54where it's like, if a guy is not that hot, especially if he has,
- 28:58like, youthful features, that he's kind of boyish, he can be
- 29:02as creepy as possible whenever. It's just like, yeah.
- 29:07This guy, you're right, that really does show up in a lot of
- 29:10our cinema. And yeah.
- 29:13Everyone's just like, oh man, he's just shooting his shot.
- 29:17Yeah, no. No, no, no.
- 29:20We can do better. We can do a lot better.
- 29:22Yeah, I agree. And then there's the part at the
- 29:26toward the end of the movie where Janie is basically kind of
- 29:32kidnapped by this guy. He's like big tall guy.
- 29:37He's like, you're dancing with me now.
- 29:40And then. And then it's like her boyfriend
- 29:44comes over and is like, no, you're not, she's mine.
- 29:48And then the other guy's like, no, she's mine.
- 29:51And none of she doesn't have any say in that.
- 29:56I mean it's literally, we literally don't even look at the
- 29:59camera is not on her. Yes.
- 30:01She's not even like really a part of that.
- 30:04Yeah, that's that's pretty ironic.
- 30:08Yeah. Yeah, she's mine, but like,
- 30:10she's not even in the picture, right?
- 30:12Yeah. And then it's like we were meant
- 30:15to feel satisfied when her boyfriend pushes him in the
- 30:18face. And it's like, how funny.
- 30:21And so, you know, he saved her, but who's to say that she even
- 30:27wanted to dance with him, right, You know?
- 30:30That scene was certainly the most problematic of of the film.
- 30:34Yeah, that scene did not age well that.
- 30:37Scene scene. Better days it has.
- 30:40And I'm like, I'm glad to see that we are aging out of that,
- 30:46at least in film, because it's been done.
- 30:49And it's so boring, right? Like it's so boring.
- 30:54I know. I'm so over it.
- 30:57Yeah, homosocial relationships are so boring.
- 31:01Boring men talking blah blah blah.
- 31:05We're over it. This is called Girls Just.
- 31:07Wanna Yeah enough of the boys It isn't fun.
- 31:11I'm not having fun and there are no girls I know.
- 31:14Get out of here. OK, The the other thing that
- 31:19really kind of, I don't know, made me cringe was the
- 31:23relationship between, what's her name, Natalie, Natalie and her
- 31:27dad. As I said before, any OK any
- 31:33person who's not a toddler who calls their dad daddy?
- 31:39It's not my favorite. Thing.
- 31:40It's not my favorite thing and if listener, if you do that, I
- 31:44am judging you and I'd like you to stop.
- 31:45I'm not like you do you, but like, it's not my favorite
- 31:49thing. It's not.
- 31:50Yeah. Especially when it comes to like
- 31:52watching it and and this I especially.
- 31:55Hated it. Yeah, Daddy, No.
- 32:04And and he calls her Princess, which is like you just yeah, I
- 32:11just hated that. And in the the very end, when
- 32:16they're preparing for the audition and Natalie is trying
- 32:22to rig the system and there is a scene between her and her dad
- 32:27where she's trying to convince him to, you know, basically
- 32:32cheat the game. And there's like this gross
- 32:38sexual undertone to it from my perspective, where she's like,
- 32:43oh, and the worst thing was that they ruined your.
- 32:47Beautiful. Hair and she goes up to him with
- 32:50like her hand like stroking his hair.
- 32:53Who the fuck does that with their dad?
- 32:56That that was that gross. Those characters weren't too
- 33:00believable. No, they that was pretty gross.
- 33:03Yeah. And also I do think it's funny
- 33:06when in movies like this when they have their allegedly middle
- 33:13class characters who are clearly wealthy.
- 33:17Oh yeah. Being like antagonized by
- 33:21someone who is like ultra wealthy, as if like the the
- 33:25other girls are like, oh, we're just normal girls, you know?
- 33:29Yeah, yeah. Oh gosh, yeah.
- 33:33I, I did appreciate he did tell her to like, shut up like I did.
- 33:39I did kind of appreciate that just 'cause that's what I wanted
- 33:42to tell her. Yeah.
- 33:43So she he was able to vocalize that.
- 33:45I needed somebody else to tell her that I thought that like the
- 33:48way that that ended, 'cause he's worse than her.
- 33:51He's way worse than her. She's a teenager and he's a
- 33:54grown man. It's so acting the same way.
- 33:56And the way that he was like, well, you just shut up.
- 33:58Yeah, I felt like, oh, geez, I really didn't like that.
- 34:02I If that had come out of Janie's mouth, sure, I would say
- 34:06I would give her a standing ovation.
- 34:08I'd say finally. That's true, but like I think
- 34:11he's the only one she would actually listen to.
- 34:14Yeah. Like he's actually probably like
- 34:18what would get her to shut up, which again, it's like not nice.
- 34:21Like no, I don't like, I don't want any dad to say that to
- 34:24their daughter, but like, she was annoying.
- 34:27Yeah, someone needed to. You know what?
- 34:29Someone needed to tell him to shut up.
- 34:31Yeah, as well. That's.
- 34:32True, there needed to be like one more.
- 34:35Another degree maybe? Like the director of the show,
- 34:39you know, just to. Like, Oh yeah, together, that
- 34:41would have been good, yeah. Maybe it's a deleted scene?
- 34:45Oh, I hope so. I sure hope so.
- 34:48OK, so Speaking of the director of the show, what were those
- 34:53there was at the beginning? What were the pills about?
- 34:55Thank you for for let's talk about.
- 34:57Let's talk about the pills. When this scene happened, I was
- 35:00I I said to Jed, we were watching it together.
- 35:02I was like, oh, this is going to be so funny.
- 35:04You love this. Like I remember him being a
- 35:06funny character. When I rewatch it, I was like,
- 35:09oh, it's not funny. Like this could be disturbing.
- 35:12Like, I don't know why I thought that was funny as a kid.
- 35:16Like probably because you had. No idea what was going on.
- 35:19But yeah, that was weird. Like I think it was like anti
- 35:23Exide like like heart pill like sure cuz he's so stressed.
- 35:28About it's like he it was like some Xanax or.
- 35:31Something, it was weird. It was weird.
- 35:33But it also kind of gave he was a little bit like he was a
- 35:37little bit like wiry. I was like, is it does?
- 35:41Is he looking for more uppers one or does he need to relax
- 35:44with some doubt? What's he looking for?
- 35:46I. Once I watched it on this time
- 35:48around, it seemed like it was a stimulant of some kind.
- 35:53Yes? Like he was never chill right?
- 35:56Like. Never chill.
- 35:57So it wasn't working if Yeah, that's what it was supposed to
- 36:01do. Which like honestly, for the
- 36:0380's, the fact that it was, you know, in in pill.
- 36:06Well, they couldn't it's PG movie.
- 36:08They couldn't be like and he was doing blow.
- 36:10Right, right. You know, no, Yeah, they
- 36:12couldn't do that. Couldn't do that.
- 36:14It was just, it was like in a prescription bottle because it's
- 36:19PG. And they kind, they like kind of
- 36:20focus on it. So maybe you think that like
- 36:22it'll come up again. It's a very strange little side
- 36:27quest. It almost makes me think, like,
- 36:28was there a deleted scene later? Like, were we supposed to follow
- 36:32up on that? Yeah, like what's the deal?
- 36:34I do wonder. I kind of want, like, I wonder
- 36:37if he's OK. Probably not.
- 36:40He'll give himself a heart attack one way or another.
- 36:42Yeah, it's. Stressful dance.
- 36:44TV. It's dance.
- 36:45I don't know if you heard but it's Dance TV DTV.
- 36:49Yeah, DTV time. I mean, I miss monoculture.
- 36:54I miss when everyone watches the same thing.
- 36:57I mean, I like having options and all of that, but at the same
- 37:01time, it's like the water cooler talk.
- 37:03Everybody was watching DTV that. Night.
- 37:06I know, I know. It's isn't that strange?
- 37:08Yes, that is so strange. So much of that world that we're
- 37:12watching, I mean, it's a different world where it is, I
- 37:16mean, so drastically different from a technology standpoint,
- 37:19from just like culture. I mean everything.
- 37:23Everything, yeah. The world looks a lot different.
- 37:26Yeah. What did you, what did you think
- 37:30about the dynamic between the military dad and Janie?
- 37:36And like, I guess like her relationship to her parents in
- 37:39general, but like, especially with the dad.
- 37:42Yeah, it was. It was so depressing.
- 37:46Like, it's a big bummer. It seems like such a lonely
- 37:48household. Yeah.
- 37:50There was like, no love, there's no fun.
- 37:52Yeah, I mean, we have like the annoying brother, like I'm
- 37:55grateful for his character cuz we needed something in that
- 37:58family. But yeah, that relationship with
- 38:01the father is a real bummer. And again also so one note.
- 38:06Totally. They were like most.
- 38:07He's in the military. Yeah, he's a tough.
- 38:11There's no dimension to most of the characters.
- 38:14Yeah, Especially his. I mean, yeah, He's the strict
- 38:19dad that knows best. And I mean, yeah, Yeah.
- 38:25And he's like, I just don't understand how he's like so down
- 38:30with gymnastics with like, so not into dance.
- 38:33Yeah. Was it because she was dancing
- 38:35with like a poor guy? Like I was just sort of, I don't
- 38:38know. I didn't really understand, like
- 38:40what's the deal with Dance I? Think it's, I think it's, I mean
- 38:46they alluded to it a little with the Catholic school and like you
- 38:49can't talk to boys. It's just that, like, you don't
- 38:53talk to boys until you're out of the house.
- 38:55Like, that's kind of like military stricts.
- 38:58I don't know, like trope again? Yeah, where he's like, you're
- 39:02doing what? You're dancing with a boy.
- 39:04Yes, because you know, gymnastics famously a a solo
- 39:08sport, right? You know.
- 39:10Right. So it's true, true.
- 39:12Yeah. Yeah, I wonder.
- 39:15I think that's a really interesting thing to realize and
- 39:19see. Like, obviously she's living a
- 39:22pretty lonely life. Yeah.
- 39:23And like, dance really is, like, such a thing that shared a lot
- 39:28of the time. So gosh, thank God she had
- 39:31dance. I know, yeah.
- 39:33Yeah, it opened up her life big time.
- 39:35And it had to because she was weird.
- 39:39Yeah, like, of course she was because she'd never had a friend
- 39:42before. But the opening scene when she's
- 39:46like, stumbling, trying to like introduce herself, oh God.
- 39:50I really resonated with that scene.
- 39:53Yeah. Because gosh, I I'm in like a
- 39:58lot of new rooms now. Like I'm going to networking
- 40:01events and like, sometimes it's like so hard to like understand
- 40:06how you introduce yourself. And so her like stumbling and
- 40:10like, where do you even start? Like you guys don't know me.
- 40:12It's like I resonated with just the like.
- 40:16This is a hard thing to do. And Oh yeah, I've stumbled over
- 40:19my words so many times and situations like that, which
- 40:22like, again, it made me feel like, all right, I'm not alone
- 40:25in this. I mean, who?
- 40:26Who? Hasn't felt like when someone's
- 40:28like, tell us a fun fact about yourself and you're like, I've
- 40:31never done anything ever. There's nothing fun or
- 40:34interesting about me. I don't know what to say.
- 40:36Yes, yes, that is when all of a sudden it's like, yeah,
- 40:40everything leaves your brain, nothing exists.
- 40:43Totally. You're like, well, what's your
- 40:44favorite movie? And you're like, I forget every
- 40:46movie I've ever watched. What's a movie?
- 40:48Yeah, totally. Can you show me one?
- 40:50It's probably that visual clue. Just need a visual clue for this
- 40:55one. Yeah.
- 40:56Who among us hasn't felt that way?
- 40:57Yeah. So yeah, they made her a little
- 41:00relatable from the beginning. So I do, I was thinking about
- 41:06like when new kids came into school, Yeah.
- 41:09And I went to a school, a Catholic school, like one
- 41:13through 8th grade. And so I was like with the same
- 41:16kids like year after year. So whenever there was a new
- 41:18student. Oh boy.
- 41:19Oh, I mean, it was like so fun. Like we have fresh blood.
- 41:23It was like, are they gonna be cute?
- 41:25Like, what's the deal? Like, are they funny friends?
- 41:28I mean, so it's, I think thinking about it from Lynn's
- 41:32perspective, I'm sure she was like just also just a novelty of
- 41:36someone new in a space like that.
- 41:38I think that makes a little more sense for their friendship.
- 41:41Totally, Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:42And I think that also, Lynn, like, probably wasn't connecting
- 41:46with some of the other girls at school because she's like, well,
- 41:49I like stuff like dance and I like, you know, what does she
- 41:53say? I'm into public school, guys.
- 41:57Yeah, and like, like when she, like does the reversible
- 42:03schoolgirl outfit. I mean, that shook me today.
- 42:08It shook me back then. Yeah, like.
- 42:11Talk about unexpected. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:13Oh gosh. And as someone who loves fashion
- 42:17and loves like a DIY approach, Oh yeah, I mean, that holds up.
- 42:21Talk about didn't age. Well, that outfit did.
- 42:24Absolutely. I can't think of one thing that
- 42:27she wore that I was like, no, yeah, every fit.
- 42:30I was like, big time, big thumbs up.
- 42:33Yeah, for sure, man. It was.
- 42:36It had been a long time since I had thought about or heard about
- 42:40a debutante ball. Like, is that a thing that
- 42:44people still do? Well, honestly, I only know
- 42:47about it from shows and movies. Yeah.
- 42:50You know, like it's, and it's often in these teen settings.
- 42:53You know, we get we have like a Gossip Girl.
- 42:55Like it's been I, I only know it as like in like high society in
- 43:00film and right. So I don't know, like I've never
- 43:04met anybody who was like, yeah, I was a part of it, like.
- 43:07I met a couple of people in college so it does exist but I
- 43:09don't know if it's like like how common is it?
- 43:14I mean. Do teenagers today know what a
- 43:17debutante ball is? I can't imagine.
- 43:20Can't imagine. I can't imagine.
- 43:21Yeah, no, I'm I'll text my niece after and we'll we'll get
- 43:26clarity but. But probably not no, because I
- 43:29mean, obviously, like it is archaic.
- 43:32It's like a meat market for marrying people who are probably
- 43:36inbred because they are also in rich society.
- 43:40But but I don't know, like is that why it's outdated?
- 43:45Or is it because like, it's just?
- 43:49Or are we just so far removed from I?
- 43:53I saw that the debutante ball scene as kind of like a Sweet
- 43:5716, you know, and like it was being like pretty like popular
- 44:02and common throughout time and I think still are in probably
- 44:05their own way. Yeah.
- 44:07I just think maybe it's just been rebrand like from
- 44:09debutante. Yeah.
- 44:11Like, well, but I guess it was like, so like isolated of all
- 44:15just the rich folks, so. Yeah, because like I think that
- 44:18in there's like many cultures where they have sort of like a
- 44:23teenage rite of passage, like a quinceanera, like a bat mitzvah
- 44:26or whatever, but there's something so specific about like
- 44:31the debutante. Thing, Yeah, it's so weird.
- 44:35It's so weird. It is weird.
- 44:37But I yeah, it probably does. It does exist in circles where
- 44:41just in. A I when I was a younger kid,
- 44:47like elementary school, I was in cotillion, which I guess is
- 44:51like, it's kind of like pre pre pre W talk.
- 44:57What was it like? Oh, it was stupid.
- 44:59Oh gosh, it sounds I liked it because we got to like meet boys
- 45:03from other schools because it was like, you know, the one
- 45:07chance that we were going to like meet people from outside of
- 45:11our regular everyday circle. But I did one thing that's like
- 45:17kind of messed up that I think I have never really unlearned is
- 45:22that we had a rule that like if a boy, so like the boys would
- 45:25ask the girls to dance and you would like do a foxtrot or
- 45:28whatever. And the rule was that like if
- 45:31someone asked you to dance, you couldn't say no.
- 45:33Like you were not allowed to say no if you didn't want to dance
- 45:35with somebody. What?
- 45:37Yeah, Yikes. Yikes.
- 45:39And if someone wanted to like cut in and dance with you, you
- 45:42know the way that that creepy guy tried to cut in.
- 45:45Yeah, yeah, you were like weren't allowed to say no.
- 45:48Oh, that's disturbing. I know that's disturbing.
- 45:51Isn't that fucked up that? I'm I don't, I don't like it at
- 45:55all. Don't like that?
- 45:56I don't like it at all. But I did learn like which side
- 46:00of the plate you're supposed to have your bread versus your
- 46:03drink. I guess that's.
- 46:04So boring. Oh my God, it's.
- 46:06I can't believe that you had to learn that lesson and it's like
- 46:09something that but I was to unlearn.
- 46:11I was in like third grade. Boo.
- 46:16We don't like that at all. So how did you, how did that
- 46:20come to a close? Like you didn't have a A ball?
- 46:24I mean, I think that they, it, it was like only for maybe 3rd
- 46:29through 5th graders. And then it was like after 5th
- 46:32grade it was like, OK, now you don't do it anymore.
- 46:36I think there were. It was just like, that's enough.
- 46:38That's funny. Yeah, and I remember that now.
- 46:40I remember, like the guy who ran it was like freaking weird.
- 46:45Oh. That sucks, yeah.
- 46:48But like I said, boys from other schools, right?
- 46:51So that was like I, that was a big draw.
- 46:54Every week. It was like, we're gonna meet
- 46:56boys from other schools and this is gonna rock.
- 46:59That's a that's a big marketing selling point back then,
- 47:03absolutely I get. It the big one.
- 47:05Yeah, God. Too bad you had to learn some
- 47:07really shitty lessons while there.
- 47:10Yeah, yeah. But thank God I know like what
- 47:13different forks mean. I'm I'm happy you know that and.
- 47:16Thank you so much for that. Yeah, I don't know.
- 47:20I feel like my parents didn't care whether I went or not, OK.
- 47:25But I think it's because, like my friends went and, OK, you
- 47:28know? Anyway, that was a.
- 47:31We needed to know that. We needed to we needed to get
- 47:33that up. We.
- 47:34Had to. We had to.
- 47:35Sorry. So anyway, the Debbie Top ball
- 47:37of it all is gross. Yeah, I didn't like that.
- 47:40I did not like that. And let's see, one thing that
- 47:46really placed me in the 80s too, was people drinking milk at
- 47:50dinner. Yes, I wrote that down.
- 47:51You did. I wrote it down.
- 47:53My God. I was like, yeah, that was like
- 47:56one thing that was very not done anymore.
- 48:00But at the time I was doing that, I was like, Oh yeah, God,
- 48:04I remember just like, chugging milk at dinner, like.
- 48:06Crazy. Hardcore.
- 48:08Yeah. Like the full family, not the
- 48:10whole family, not just the child.
- 48:11Like everybody. Like, yeah, we'd go through
- 48:14gowns. Yeah.
- 48:19That was. I loved that little.
- 48:21Yeah. That little nod to a different
- 48:23time of a lot of milk drinking. Just tons and tons of milk.
- 48:29That was good. That was really.
- 48:31Good. What did you think of Jeff Stab?
- 48:33I was pretty kind of surprised with his character to be.
- 48:36Honest. Yeah.
- 48:37I was surprised by him too. Because throughout much of the
- 48:40movie, you think where there. OK, so we know Janie's parents
- 48:46care where she is. No one else really seems to care
- 48:49where their kids are. Like he's just riding his
- 48:52motorcycle around all the time. Never has to, you know, respond
- 48:59to anyone. But but his dad, I mean, his dad
- 49:04loved that his son danced. He was like, you must dance.
- 49:08I know you gotta do it that. Support.
- 49:11I think it was so, so surprising because you're seeing Janie and
- 49:17her dad and just that tension and then you see like what the
- 49:20support of a parent does and you're like, wow, that's just
- 49:23like a a lot healthier of a relationship.
- 49:25Like, big time. And like the the pride that the
- 49:29dad feels when he's at the bar, like watching it with all the
- 49:32people and the spear, I mean, it's like, wow, like that's a
- 49:36lot of pride to have for your kid.
- 49:38I like that. Especially in a type of sport
- 49:43that you wouldn't necessarily expect this like factory working
- 49:48dad who's like watching it at a bar to be like, that's my son.
- 49:51Yes, I loved that. Twisting and turning and
- 49:54flipping. Yeah, I think it was like one of
- 49:55the surprisingly more interesting characters because
- 50:00it wasn't just like the working class like trope of a like,
- 50:05unfeeling guy, right? It was like a supportive single
- 50:09dad. I was totally.
- 50:10Let's go. Yeah.
- 50:11OK, despite the fact that this kid could do and if he could
- 50:16leave and do anything, he wasn't an absent father, you know I.
- 50:20Think Jeff is graduated high school?
- 50:23You think so? I think he's 18, OK, Because I
- 50:26think he's like supposed to be going to trade school.
- 50:29That's right. So I think that's right.
- 50:31She is kind of technically out of the house.
- 50:33So I think that's why there's a little more freedom.
- 50:35OK, that gives you if that makes you sleep better at night
- 50:39knowing that these fictional children are taken care of.
- 50:43And that does that does make you feel good, feel better.
- 50:47Oh, yeah. So.
- 50:48Oh, he OK, I'm looking at, I'm looking at Wikipedia.
- 50:53It says Janie and local high schooler Jeff Shine and are
- 50:57partnered together once they make the finals.
- 50:59He loves to dance, though he feels pressured to attend trade
- 51:03school after graduation, as his father did before him.
- 51:06So he is still in high school, but he might be like a Senior
- 51:11High School. You're right, because there's
- 51:13there's one school scene where they're at the locker.
- 51:15Yeah, OK, you're right. So he's a senior?
- 51:17So we'll just say he's a senior. Dad's like I raised.
- 51:20Yeah. And I guess, yeah, I guess
- 51:23you're kind of grown. Yeah, he, I guess his curfew is
- 51:2612. And yeah, he seems to be
- 51:29honoring it. I don't, I mean.
- 51:30Look, he, he was a good kid. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:33He wasn't getting into trouble. No, I mean.
- 51:36Literally just dancing. He did flip.
- 51:37For her, I mean, yeah, but he was.
- 51:41He was trying to protect. Her yeah, he wasn't just he
- 51:43wasn't just stirring the pot, he.
- 51:46You're right, He I didn't appreciate how Moody he got.
- 51:52Oh my God. I was really disturbed with his
- 51:55lack of communication and like, hey, just bring your partner in
- 51:59on this. Like, it'd be a lot easier.
- 52:01But again, like, how else are they gonna have conflict in this
- 52:04film? So of course they had to really
- 52:06lean in. Yeah, and it almost makes you
- 52:10say, Oh no, is he gonna do it? Is he gonna come around?
- 52:16Oh, man. You know what I wish would have
- 52:18happened? I wish that.
- 52:21I wish that Janie would have just ditched him when he started
- 52:26being like a little bitch and she would have just danced with
- 52:29her bestie. Lynn I.
- 52:30Think that would be epic. That would be so cool.
- 52:34Why aren't, why aren't they redoing this?
- 52:36And are they? Because this would be a good
- 52:38reboot to have a little. I mean, they're rebooting
- 52:41everything at this point. Yeah.
- 52:43And I'd love to have some, some tweaks.
- 52:45Yeah, I'd love to have some tweaks.
- 52:47I've got notes. Yeah, we've got notes.
- 52:50Oh, we've got notes. We have notes.
- 52:53And one of them is that we need someone else to tell Natalie to
- 52:57shut the fuck up at the end of the movie.
- 52:59That's not what her dad says, but spiritually it's what he
- 53:02says. OK, let's see.
- 53:05What what else was I was I going to say about?
- 53:09Oh, yeah. There's one other thing that I
- 53:11just wanted to bring up that has nothing to do with aging well,
- 53:14but I loved watching in the scene where Janie essentially
- 53:19orchestrates a riot. The buff ladies just pick up the
- 53:23bench with the old people on it and just turn it around.
- 53:27That's all they do is they pick it up and then they just turn
- 53:31them around. I thought that was so funny.
- 53:35Yeah. I don't know why.
- 53:36I just loved it. It's unbelievable.
- 53:39Yeah. It's like some Wes Anderson
- 53:41shit. Like, you know, it's totally.
- 53:43And it's so like it's only done for like, artistic sit.
- 53:47I mean, like how they're posing, like throw young tea.
- 53:50I mean, that was a good choice. Yeah, that was a good choice.
- 53:53I loved those strong women, but. Me.
- 53:56Too bad ass. I loved that.
- 53:58Are we serious? Yeah, are you kidding me?
- 54:00They were so cool. And they also, like, they
- 54:03weren't a punchline either. They easily could have been
- 54:06like, oh, look at these. Yeah, look at these manly
- 54:09ladies. Oh, I bet they're lesbians.
- 54:12Yeah, no. They were just like cool buff
- 54:15chicks. Like helping people out.
- 54:17Yeah, totally. Remember when they lifted the
- 54:19car? Oh that was awesome.
- 54:21They're so strong. They're so just so strong.
- 54:26And I loved that. Yeah, I loved that for them.
- 54:30OK, well, what else do we need to discuss about?
- 54:34Girls just want to have fun. I mean, milk was at the top of
- 54:38my list, so check. I I just realized, like watching
- 54:47it, how much I have always loved teen genre.
- 54:53Yeah, like, I still love it to love it to this day.
- 54:57And there's something about the age of teenagers that is
- 55:03compelling because you're they're in this in between state
- 55:07between like and it's such an interesting like thing to
- 55:11witness to like enter the world as a team.
- 55:15And I think this movie, while being pretty simple, like sure
- 55:21shows that a little bit. And I think it's really it's a
- 55:26cool time to watch. And it's I would be so
- 55:30fascinated to see what teenagers think of watching this now,
- 55:34right? Because God, I mean, talk about
- 55:36their lives being so drastically different.
- 55:39Totally. I mean like those. 40 years ago,
- 55:42I mean. So different.
- 55:44So like, I don't even know if like they would see any see
- 55:48themselves in any of these people.
- 55:49Yeah. But it's, I just love the genre.
- 55:53So I'm like grateful that we got to talk about it.
- 55:55My gosh, me too. I think that probably young
- 55:59people would relate to the very first scene where Janie doesn't
- 56:02know how to introduce herself, because even young people have
- 56:08to do that. Yes.
- 56:10Yes, oftentimes more. Yes, so true.
- 56:13So. Hopefully, hopefully they see
- 56:15themselves in that and say, Phew, I'm not alone.
- 56:17Yeah, for sure. Oh, and what about the nuns?
- 56:21The nuns were like. The nuns what?
- 56:24That nun that was a gymnast, yes.
- 56:27Let's go. She she could have been with the
- 56:30buff lady. Yes, yes, she looked like she
- 56:32she showed up at. The party that would have been
- 56:34me. Too.
- 56:35I wish that she was lifting that couch with that other lady.
- 56:38That would have been so cool. Yeah.
- 56:41But they did. Yeah.
- 56:43The nuns were very kind of You know what you'd expect of
- 56:49Catholic school nun in a movie? Yeah, exactly.
- 56:53I had, I had a couple nuns and they weren't, they weren't like
- 56:58that so much. No, I think it is.
- 57:00I mean, I didn't go to Catholic school.
- 57:02Well, in college I went to a Jesuit school, which is like,
- 57:05you know, it is Catholic. There were nuns there.
- 57:09They they did exist but but they were typically like very chill.
- 57:17I have limited, I have limited experience, but my experience
- 57:23with nuns has been like their they're pretty normal, yeah,
- 57:27kind of just chill nuns. I think I had some strict ones,
- 57:30but not like the like, you know, the physically like, you know,
- 57:36angry strict ones we saw in the film.
- 57:38Totally. There is, like I did recognize
- 57:41the discipline that, yeah, the nuns kind of created in this
- 57:45environment and mine. It wasn't Sister Act, I'll say.
- 57:50That oh. Gosh, yeah.
- 57:52Now that that. Now that's a movie.
- 57:54Now that. Now that's a girls on the.
- 57:56List. Yeah, that was high on the list.
- 57:58That was high on the list. It's a really, really.
- 57:59Good movie too, I love that. I talked about that movie ages
- 58:02ago, in the very beginning Days of the Pond.
- 58:04Oh yeah, we've got to start there.
- 58:06So. Good, got to start.
- 58:07There with our friend Chris Sharp and Tierra shout out front
- 58:09of the pond. But yeah, God I I need to
- 58:13revisit that movie just for fun. Well, I told you the podcast,
- 58:18your podcast has really inspired me to go back in the archives
- 58:22and like dig up some of these old films that I had like a lot
- 58:27of affinity towards and like, it's so cool watching it with an
- 58:31adult brain and just with like a ton of experience.
- 58:34So oh. My gosh, that makes me so happy.
- 58:37Oh, I have added so many to my watch list because that's
- 58:41awesome. ADHD executive function and like
- 58:43the scrolling of like, what do I want?
- 58:45Yeah, I have. You've got your.
- 58:47Set myself up for success. I'm I'm not gonna spend all
- 58:50night deciding what to watch. It's great, it's great.
- 58:53And I love filled with old stuff because I'm like so bored with
- 58:57what's happening right now. So true.
- 59:00But that makes me so happy because oftentimes, Kelly,
- 59:04people say, oh, your show inspired me to watch this old
- 59:08movie and it sucked and now it's ruined.
- 59:12And I say that's not my fault that someone made a movie that
- 59:16didn't hold up. No, it is not.
- 59:18It is not your. Fault.
- 59:19Thank you for that. Yeah.
- 59:21We can learn from our past, we can learn from our past in the
- 59:24movies and like, there's a lot to learn there.
- 59:27It's a lot to learn. There's a lot to learn.
- 59:30Oh yeah, I'm reading this book right now about pop culture
- 59:34shaping how people perceived women in the early aughts, and
- 59:41it is depressing. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad,
- 59:46bad, bad. And it's important.
- 59:48It's like, it's really bumming me out.
- 59:51But it's important because as a millennial woman, this, this is
- 59:56like what? What?
- 59:57Shaped and informed who I am. Yep, Uh oh.
- 1:00:02Yep. I, I, I'm, I just rewatched Ugly
- 1:00:05Betty, I told you and I, oh, that's, I was going through that
- 1:00:09same just realization of like, wow, like this was the culture
- 1:00:14of like, really of me coming to age and just like how they talk
- 1:00:19about women and like in so much of that content of that time.
- 1:00:23Yeah. I, I did a little rewatch of
- 1:00:25stuff in that era and I'm appalled.
- 1:00:27Yeah, it's appalled, but also shocking like that it wasn't
- 1:00:32that long ago. Like, not at all.
- 1:00:34Yeah, not, yeah, not at all. Yeah.
- 1:00:37Mm. Hmm.
- 1:00:39We have work to do always. Always, always.
- 1:00:47And that's, and that's what we, we have to remember when we're
- 1:00:51talking about movies on this podcast, is that we're not here
- 1:00:54to ruin your favorite movie. That's the movie's fault.
- 1:00:57Yeah. But that's not our.
- 1:01:00It's not what we want. No, no, no, we want you to enjoy
- 1:01:06rewatching from different perspective and like.
- 1:01:09That's. Interesting.
- 1:01:10And watch it with like some, Yeah, just some curiosity, yeah.
- 1:01:14Yes, and you might even have fun.
- 1:01:16You will, because what girls just want to have fun.
- 1:01:22Kelly, thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 1:01:25It was so lovely. Let's talk movies like how fun
- 1:01:28is it? God, how fun is this?
- 1:01:30So fun. Come on this beanbag.
- 1:01:32Anytime. Thank you.
- 1:01:33I it's so comfy and like I just kind of want one for myself now.
- 1:01:38Well, you should get one. Deal.
- 1:01:41It's you could you could collage on it.
- 1:01:46Kelly Colleges. I do I do this.
- 1:01:49Could this could be next? Watch out, beanbag hates to see
- 1:01:55me coming. Here I come.
