- 1:33Speaker 6: So our guest Tonight is an award winning broadcaster for
- 1:37Speaker 6: documentaries and primetime shows and it's been in radio and
- 1:40Speaker 6: television broadcasting for over twenty five years. He graduated from
- 1:44Speaker 6: Texas Tech Watch Out WU Fans in May two thousand
- 1:49Speaker 6: and four and he can now be found weekday mornings
- 1:53Speaker 6: on wo w K TV as the morning Meteorologist and
- 1:56Speaker 6: he's done that since twenty twelve. So we are very
- 2:00Speaker 6: very happy, and I'm honored to introduce Brian Newes to
- 2:03Speaker 6: the podcast.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Walk from Brian.
- 2:04Speaker 7: It's so good to be here. I'm excited you. I
- 2:06Speaker 7: feel like him in hostile territory. That's why I wore Mark.
- 2:11Speaker 4: There you go.
- 2:13Speaker 5: That was a good idea. Actually, Oh that let me
- 2:17Speaker 5: take you some.
- 2:17Speaker 7: My mom be representing the Red and Black this summer weekend.
- 2:20Speaker 5: That's okay. We understand you got to represent your alma mater, right.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Try you don't have to.
- 2:26Speaker 7: You don't have to guess what this year twenty three
- 2:29Speaker 7: million dollars your damn runner, what seven million dollars defensive?
- 2:37Speaker 4: I can't argue that one, right, right, So.
- 2:41Speaker 5: I'll start with the first question, Brian.
- 2:42Speaker 6: So, your TV weather career began in Lubbock, Texas, and
- 2:47Speaker 6: continued to Iowa, Michigan, and then finally you landed in
- 2:50Speaker 6: West Virginia. What made you decide to call Almost Heaven
- 2:53Speaker 6: your home.
- 2:54Speaker 7: Well, I had an agent, uh, and I fired him
- 2:56Speaker 7: after I got here. So that's not good, right, It's
- 3:01Speaker 7: gone true that did fire him, But I know it
- 3:03Speaker 7: is the classic story of anybody who doesn't know which
- 3:08Speaker 7: Charleston they are talking about. And so he's he's alway,
- 3:12Speaker 7: he said, he said, I think you're gonna love Charleston.
- 3:14Speaker 7: You and by the way, sorry, my boys has been
- 3:16Speaker 7: a little rough this week. He said, I think you're
- 3:18Speaker 7: gonna love Charleston. I said, I know, I'm gonna love it.
- 3:21Speaker 7: I'd already picked like my apartment where I was gonna live,
- 3:24Speaker 7: the haunting yards and everything else, and I done the
- 3:26Speaker 7: research on the market, and so he called me, I
- 3:29Speaker 7: was gonna have a skype interview. By the way, So
- 3:31Speaker 7: this was twenty.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Twelve.
- 3:35Speaker 7: Yeah, twenty twelve ish.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, twenty twenty twelve.
- 3:38Speaker 7: So he said, he said, you're gonna have a skype interview.
- 3:40Speaker 7: I think you're gonna nail it. He goes, so you
- 3:42Speaker 7: already pickt out your place? Says yeah, it's ride by
- 3:44Speaker 7: the water. It's awesome. He said, I think you're gonna
- 3:47Speaker 7: be a great match for West Virginia. And I went,
- 3:50Speaker 7: huh what what.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Any?
- 3:54Speaker 7: He was like, yeah, hey Charleston, You're gonna love Charleston
- 3:56Speaker 7: West Virginia. I said, I thought I was going to
- 3:59Speaker 7: South Carolina, you know, and you already had a place.
- 4:05Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I picked it out. Ray signed it literally,
- 4:08Speaker 7: Race signed the line as soon as they said we
- 4:10Speaker 7: want to hire you, Jack check with the apartment place.
- 4:14Speaker 7: He's a beautiful, beautiful but so so I did. I
- 4:19Speaker 7: came down here and in my first meal was with UH.
- 4:25Speaker 7: I was over there in Huntington at the Marshall Hall
- 4:29Speaker 7: thing Cafe and UH and so of all people that
- 4:33Speaker 7: I see there. Mike Kurtner, who is who is the
- 4:37Speaker 7: voice for the Polgress announcer for a men's basketball has
- 4:41Speaker 7: been for thirty plus years right and owns the radio
- 4:44Speaker 7: stations over there Atrinee's affiliate. So so I literally met
- 4:49Speaker 7: him that day and he and I have been great
- 4:51Speaker 7: friends ever since. Wow, So so you know I did.
- 4:56Speaker 7: I immediately met by happenstance with one of the guys
- 5:00Speaker 7: just most connected there in Huntington in regards to the
- 5:03Speaker 7: Marshall Sports. So it was it was awesome.
- 5:05Speaker 6: You you definitely can wear that am on your shirty
- 5:10Speaker 6: Yeah I can't allow it.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 5:17Speaker 7: But but yeah, that was actually how it all worked out.
- 5:21Speaker 7: And I did fire my Asian he had not having it,
- 5:25Speaker 7: but it wasn't because he brought me to West Virginia.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Okay, so what has what has been like?
- 5:34Speaker 3: And not saying that there has to be a challenge,
- 5:36Speaker 3: but what what do you think is the real challenge
- 5:39Speaker 3: in doing that type of work? If there's people out
- 5:41Speaker 3: there or a person out there who would be interested
- 5:44Speaker 3: in doing that because I did it a little bit
- 5:47Speaker 3: and it and it didn't really work out for me.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Not I don't and maybe not by my choice but
- 5:52Speaker 3: maybe by the other folks's choice. But because I haven't
- 5:56Speaker 3: done it, I think it's I think it's interesting because
- 5:58Speaker 3: I think I think people just think it's like just talking.
- 6:02Speaker 7: Well it is. I mean, first of all, I've always
- 6:05Speaker 7: said I've hired. I've hired a number of anybody who's
- 6:07Speaker 7: been in radio. I'll hire in a heartbeat because they
- 6:11Speaker 7: have the gift of gab. They can fill the gap.
- 6:14Speaker 7: They can talk about They may not they may be
- 6:17Speaker 7: an idiot, but they can they can fill that gap
- 6:21Speaker 7: because and they can do it quite well. Because it's well,
- 6:25Speaker 7: if you can talk around the subject, you're fine. But
- 6:28Speaker 7: but I've hired more. I won't hire a person who
- 6:31Speaker 7: is out of college who has a great you know, book, booksmarts,
- 6:37Speaker 7: It doesn't work. They can't communicate with people. But anybody
- 6:40Speaker 7: who can talk, who sit there and tell me about
- 6:43Speaker 7: their grandparents or family, whatever else, and and fill time
- 6:46Speaker 7: to where I'm like, you've got to shut up at
- 6:48Speaker 7: this point.
- 6:51Speaker 5: That's your people.
- 6:52Speaker 7: Yeah, because they I need somebody. I need somebody who
- 6:56Speaker 7: can make me believe that it's going to ring tomorrow
- 7:00Speaker 7: and I need somebody who can who can talk and
- 7:04Speaker 7: it's housing to do that. They're good, but yet I
- 7:07Speaker 7: will there are still you know, there's that, But you
- 7:09Speaker 7: also have to somebody's got to be able to at
- 7:12Speaker 7: least talk about the weather. You had to know one,
- 7:13Speaker 7: you had to know what. You gotta understand it, uh
- 7:16Speaker 7: to some degree. But I said, I was. I was
- 7:20Speaker 7: working in Lubwick, Texas, and I had this gal. My
- 7:24Speaker 7: gentleman goes, she's going to be the next weather gale
- 7:27Speaker 7: for Telemundo, and I said, so, what experience does she have?
- 7:34Speaker 7: She didn't have any. I think you're gonna make her fine.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 7: Yeah, it was not a good day when I had
- 7:44Speaker 7: When I try and make her feel fill the gap.
- 7:49Speaker 7: She did with a minute and a half, and boy
- 7:51Speaker 7: we had three minutes of phil.
- 7:53Speaker 6: But just so you know, sometimes, yeah, if you can talk,
- 7:57Speaker 6: you're you're with good with you?
- 8:00Speaker 5: Right?
- 8:00Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 8:01Speaker 7: Yeah I was.
- 8:01Speaker 8: I was in cantcuon just a couple months ago and
- 8:05Speaker 8: I just looked at the people to oh, well, tormentous
- 8:07Speaker 8: throttos and they were like it was some Mexican folks
- 8:12Speaker 8: are thrilled.
- 8:12Speaker 7: I knew thunderstorms right now.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Wow. Now Lisa mentioned that you're from Texas. You went
- 8:18Speaker 3: to Texas Tech. WVU is playing Texas Tech.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Now, one thing that people may not know about you
- 8:24Speaker 3: is that you were the mascot for Texas Tech during
- 8:27Speaker 3: your collegiate day. So tell us a little bit about that.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about how did you become
- 8:31Speaker 3: the Red Raider.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Well, there's actually a lot of succession to get into
- 8:36Speaker 7: being raider Red my my mother.
- 8:41Speaker 4: So there are two.
- 8:42Speaker 7: There are two mascots technically for Texas Tech. There's the
- 8:44Speaker 7: cartoon version, which is rader Red, the one you see
- 8:47Speaker 7: on the sidelines. And then there's the one that is that.
- 8:50Speaker 7: You can't take this one on the road except for
- 8:53Speaker 7: bowl games or national championship which we might be on.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Who knows it.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Hey, you gotta hey, you gotta own it when you
- 9:03Speaker 7: when you pay this much. So so you have the
- 9:07Speaker 7: mass rider and the mass writer rides the black Horse,
- 9:11Speaker 7: and so that one, uh pretty much stays at home
- 9:15Speaker 7: except for bowl games. Uh. But Rita is the cartoon mascott,
- 9:18Speaker 7: so you could travel all the way all across the country.
- 9:21Speaker 7: I was in line to be right to read. My
- 9:24Speaker 7: mother was a cheerleading coach.
- 9:26Speaker 6: Uh.
- 9:26Speaker 7: You know, I I can do it standing back, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 7: backflip Uh in a heartbeat.
- 9:32Speaker 4: True, but.
- 9:36Speaker 5: We're in a hard way about that.
- 9:39Speaker 7: He is a little rough sometimes. But but I knew
- 9:42Speaker 7: that I wanted to be that so bad I've been
- 9:45Speaker 7: to Texas at games as a kid. You know, it's
- 9:47Speaker 7: all of that. So and then, uh, when I had
- 9:50Speaker 7: the opportunity because there's there's the Male Spirit Organization, which
- 9:55Speaker 7: there's a number of you have the rough uh roughnecks
- 9:58Speaker 7: up there to owe you, and you got the cadets
- 10:01Speaker 7: and into A and M which there are a bunch
- 10:03Speaker 7: of woodses. But the reason they left the Big twelve
- 10:08Speaker 7: was because we were about to surpass them and wins away. Yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 7: that happens. But I wanted to raight to Red so
- 10:17Speaker 7: bad and uh and I got the opportunity, and it
- 10:20Speaker 7: actually happened at the at the Independence Bowl. The guy
- 10:26Speaker 7: who was doing the mascot right an at the time
- 10:29Speaker 7: was worn out. He's a big old fella. He was
- 10:32Speaker 7: worn out. And my best friend and I, who were
- 10:34Speaker 7: in line, I was next in line. He goes, tureturn,
- 10:37Speaker 7: you gotta take over for him, and so we I
- 10:39Speaker 7: with the half we switched out.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Oh wow.
- 10:42Speaker 7: And then uh, I became right to Red and was
- 10:43Speaker 7: right to read them for almost a year.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Uh.
- 10:46Speaker 7: And I did occasional appearances later on. But it's solid, dear, there.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So is there is there like a competition, So let's say, like,
- 10:55Speaker 3: so let's say if I'm i'm I'm I'm that this year, Yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and all of a sudden you show up next year
- 11:01Speaker 3: and you want to try out.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Is there like a tryout that you have to or
- 11:05Speaker 4: do I just stay?
- 11:07Speaker 7: You know, it's it's sort of whoever's rate of red
- 11:10Speaker 7: time sort of picks who's going to be that because
- 11:12Speaker 7: they just it's sort of a it's it's kind of it.
- 11:16Speaker 7: It's like a premonition like that, that's that's gonna be
- 11:19Speaker 7: the guy. He's the guy. He's got because you listen,
- 11:22Speaker 7: you have a walk like right red do you have
- 11:24Speaker 7: a talk? Like you don't talk, but you have a talk.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Wish I wish the camera worked. I wish you could
- 11:33Speaker 5: because the medio would be awesome.
- 11:35Speaker 7: You are larger than live and that you have to
- 11:38Speaker 7: live things much larger than life. You step high steps,
- 11:42Speaker 7: you know the way you sign your name you sign.
- 11:46Speaker 3: So so just to compare, to give our audience a comparison,
- 11:49Speaker 3: like the Mountaineer is a big deal here, yea in
- 11:51Speaker 3: the state of West Virginia. So is it comparable to that?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Would you say it's the same.
- 11:56Speaker 7: No one, No one knows the identity of Raider Red
- 12:00Speaker 7: until Rada Red retires and so but I had a secret,
- 12:07Speaker 7: well sort, I had a very complicating issue because I
- 12:12Speaker 7: was the voice of Texas Tech for baseball at the time,
- 12:16Speaker 7: and I was on TV doing the weekend weather at
- 12:20Speaker 7: the NBC station. So so you were busy, so everybody
- 12:25Speaker 7: so in the in the Texas Tech administration that ill
- 12:28Speaker 7: knw who I was. But I didn't say anything on
- 12:31Speaker 7: TV ever or what radio is I was working as well, But.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Part of the protocol is you can't speak as a
- 12:38Speaker 5: mascot anyway.
- 12:40Speaker 7: But it just so happens that I would do the
- 12:43Speaker 7: six o'clock news doing the weather, and I as soon
- 12:48Speaker 7: as I get done with a full forecast, which about
- 12:50Speaker 7: middle of the show, I would go right back into
- 12:52Speaker 7: the office and then strip and put on my waist
- 12:56Speaker 7: below rate of red, I walk out and and I
- 13:00Speaker 7: would do I would do the new to finish the
- 13:02Speaker 7: end of the show and go seventy forecasts, looks like this,
- 13:05Speaker 7: gonna have some sunshine and blah blah blah blah. And
- 13:07Speaker 7: then as soon as that show was over, like that,
- 13:09Speaker 7: I mean literally the light goes off, I run out
- 13:12Speaker 7: the door, get in my truck and go straight to
- 13:14Speaker 7: the arena so that right before seven o'clock I give
- 13:18Speaker 7: be read to red on the court.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So believe me, it was.
- 13:24Speaker 5: It was crazy, but it was fun. It sounds like
- 13:27Speaker 5: it was fun.
- 13:28Speaker 6: So you just you just deluded, You just deluted to
- 13:32Speaker 6: the fact that you you were the former public dress
- 13:35Speaker 6: announcers for their basketball and baseball teams. Right, Yes, so
- 13:40Speaker 6: that requires that requires a depth of knowledge of both
- 13:43Speaker 6: sports to be able to do that.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Yeah, where did you.
- 13:46Speaker 6: Get a lot of your foundational understanding of those different sports?
- 13:50Speaker 7: My dad has been a white hat for years in football,
- 13:55Speaker 7: so he has he is absolutely I've learned more from
- 13:59Speaker 7: him than anything.
- 14:00Speaker 4: And what's the why haf for who don't know he is?
- 14:03Speaker 4: He is the.
- 14:04Speaker 7: Referee, he is in charge on the on the field
- 14:06Speaker 7: the entire time.
- 14:07Speaker 4: He's a white level.
- 14:08Speaker 7: He's one of the microphone big twelve uh competent to
- 14:11Speaker 7: say whack big sky, that's hue in anything Big twelve West,
- 14:16Speaker 7: which but by the old old school Big twelve West,
- 14:19Speaker 7: so middle Country off to the west. And more than
- 14:23Speaker 7: anything of what I learned was neutrality. I mean, you
- 14:27Speaker 7: sit there, watch and and that's I have a hard
- 14:30Speaker 7: time cheering at games because I see, Yeah, I'm so
- 14:35Speaker 7: ingrained with seeing seeing the middle of the road. You
- 14:39Speaker 7: don't get emotional with this shoe and get most of that.
- 14:41Speaker 7: So so I knew all that, but I became public public.
- 14:46Speaker 7: I always didn't sound like it today, but I became
- 14:49Speaker 7: the public rest announcer because I knew the game, I
- 14:52Speaker 7: knew the rules, and I could immediately interpreted what happened.
- 14:56Speaker 7: My friends freak out when when we're watching football again
- 15:00Speaker 7: because I'm like, I told him there, and I don't
- 15:04Speaker 7: do it like it. I told him on it's for me.
- 15:08Speaker 5: It's just there's with your announcer voice.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny because like just listening to you come
- 15:15Speaker 3: from a very sports background, but it's almost a little
- 15:18Speaker 3: bit indirect Oftentimes we get guests, Yeah, you know, play
- 15:21Speaker 3: the game, da da da, But your mom was a
- 15:23Speaker 3: cheerleading coach, your father was a referee. You've done the announcing,
- 15:27Speaker 3: So you come from this sort of outwardly sports inwardly.
- 15:34Speaker 7: The football coach at my high school wanted me to
- 15:36Speaker 7: kick because it is crazy. Want me kick because he
- 15:41Speaker 7: saw me and show choir and I could do a
- 15:43Speaker 7: high kick on nobody's business. It was stupid and he
- 15:46Speaker 7: wanted but he wanted me to kick. I went out
- 15:48Speaker 7: and kicked a couple of times, just practice stuff, and
- 15:51Speaker 7: I was decent. I won't say it was good because
- 15:53Speaker 7: I have nothing compared to But my mother wouldn't let
- 15:57Speaker 7: me play football because she did not want me to
- 15:59Speaker 7: get her blah blah blah. So I was I was
- 16:02Speaker 7: beholding to whatever she was saying. But yet I could
- 16:05Speaker 7: still be up in the booth call game. I get
- 16:08Speaker 7: part of it, and yeah, I can interpret it so
- 16:09Speaker 7: much of it. But you know, my my my uncle
- 16:15Speaker 7: h state State championship wrestling coach. So I literally have
- 16:19Speaker 7: just been in the sports world but have not haven't
- 16:23Speaker 7: played it. So but but all that depth of knowledge
- 16:28Speaker 7: of all the different sports allowed me to be radar
- 16:32Speaker 7: at and be be good at radar red because hey,
- 16:37Speaker 7: you're damn right.
- 16:38Speaker 4: But you know, I think it makes a difference because
- 16:40Speaker 4: when you understand the sports and you are you know
- 16:43Speaker 4: that mascot, you understand kind of when to get the
- 16:45Speaker 4: hot crowd hide, you understand, you understand the nuances of
- 16:48Speaker 4: what's going on.
- 16:49Speaker 7: I know I know what essentially, I know what their
- 16:51Speaker 7: hype train needs to go and I know what I know,
- 16:52Speaker 7: what ain't do here, know what to do there, and
- 16:55Speaker 7: and and to maximize my efforts, I you know, I knew.
- 16:58Speaker 7: Listen every time that you know, we get to sixteen
- 17:02Speaker 7: twelve agent or sixteen twelve, yeah, eight and two or
- 17:06Speaker 7: eight and four a time out on the flour and
- 17:09Speaker 7: immediately guess was TV time out? Let's go yeah. I
- 17:12Speaker 7: say it every time we an arena sixteen passed, okay,
- 17:17Speaker 7: next next that ball, deb ball house, stopage, whatever, there's
- 17:20Speaker 7: a time out on the.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Floor at the super Bowl party.
- 17:26Speaker 7: I hate super Bowl.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I'm like Hollis because it because what's what's what's I
- 17:33Speaker 3: don't know.
- 17:33Speaker 4: If it's surprising, amazing or or what it is like. Two.
- 17:40Speaker 3: If I were to think about doing any parts of
- 17:43Speaker 3: that of the role in which you played, in the
- 17:46Speaker 3: number of roles that you've played, I would think like
- 17:49Speaker 3: there would it would take a lot of work understanding
- 17:56Speaker 3: of what's going on. And it seems like you just
- 17:58Speaker 3: kind of fell into it and and and blended it
- 18:02Speaker 3: into who you are, who you were and what you
- 18:04Speaker 3: could do.
- 18:05Speaker 7: I literally stumbled in the best job of my life,
- 18:08Speaker 7: and that was being the mascot of Texas. But Unfortunately
- 18:11Speaker 7: I was not the mascot during this big run that
- 18:13Speaker 7: we're about to make in the college playoff.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I was just going there. I'll just going there.
- 18:19Speaker 6: So so, uh, you know, you attend a lot of
- 18:22Speaker 6: when you can, a lot of the Texas Tech athletic events, right,
- 18:25Speaker 6: you're kind of an ambassador for them.
- 18:27Speaker 7: If Texas Tech, yeah is playing in West Virginia or
- 18:29Speaker 7: anywhere close, Yeah, you're there.
- 18:31Speaker 5: You're there. So you do plan on going to to
- 18:33Speaker 5: Morgantown Saturday.
- 18:34Speaker 7: I have some great seats.
- 18:36Speaker 5: I bet you.
- 18:38Speaker 7: Hotel hotel that you will cry if you knew what
- 18:41Speaker 7: the price.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Well, oh my gosh, I need your connections.
- 18:45Speaker 7: Ilish the nights.
- 18:46Speaker 6: Wow wow, No, I need your connections the next time
- 18:49Speaker 6: I go to Morgantown. But but anyway, so you've been
- 18:52Speaker 6: all these you know, these places besides being in labback
- 18:54Speaker 6: and then the places you've attended outside of that place.
- 18:56Speaker 6: So how do you compare the venue in Morgantown to
- 18:59Speaker 6: some of the other places you've gone to see your
- 19:01Speaker 6: team play.
- 19:02Speaker 7: I was in, I've done I've done the Big House,
- 19:05Speaker 7: I've been Iowa. I'm gonna tell you something. You better
- 19:10Speaker 7: you better have a liver and a half year Little Iowa. Wow,
- 19:14Speaker 7: those Hawk guys.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Doing I thought you would say, Morgan's no.
- 19:17Speaker 4: No, those Hawk.
- 19:18Speaker 7: Guys know how to drink.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Wow, they don't drink, they drink.
- 19:26Speaker 7: I can tell you this in Morgantown, Morgan, you also
- 19:28Speaker 7: have to have a solid liver. But you also have
- 19:32Speaker 7: to have to be monthly your back. But that that
- 19:34Speaker 7: says an opponent, the opponent, you know. Yeah, whereas I listen,
- 19:39Speaker 7: we're in tailgate have a boogop pass. Thankfully, I don't
- 19:42Speaker 7: know where it's at, but it's.
- 19:43Speaker 5: It doesn't matter. Yeah, you're good.
- 19:47Speaker 7: But but now you know what I'll say it this.
- 19:52Speaker 7: I was up there a few years ago, five six
- 19:54Speaker 7: five six years ago, and I was on an e
- 19:57Speaker 7: scooter because I've had a number of surgeries on my
- 20:00Speaker 7: on my foot, part of that mask on the ball.
- 20:02Speaker 7: But I was I was rolling down the hill one time.
- 20:07Speaker 5: You were rolling down there.
- 20:09Speaker 6: That's a great idea, Yeah, recovering for search.
- 20:12Speaker 7: That was a beer in hand, and.
- 20:15Speaker 5: There might be some alcohol.
- 20:17Speaker 7: But bet a friend of mine, Maddie, he knows who is.
- 20:22Speaker 7: He was a hammer. He was hammered three ways from Sunday.
- 20:25Speaker 7: I looked at him, I was like, you.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Got to get up or not.
- 20:27Speaker 7: He was like e And this one woman who was inside,
- 20:31Speaker 7: who was inside the bench, she looked at him and goes,
- 20:33Speaker 7: if you boys can get him up here, woll had
- 20:35Speaker 7: him man and and it was a herculean effort on
- 20:39Speaker 7: a knees gutter. But I take that as one of
- 20:42Speaker 7: my monumental moments as.
- 20:45Speaker 5: A fan, one of your biggest accomplished.
- 20:47Speaker 7: Yeah, and and and also and also a lover of
- 20:50Speaker 7: everything West Virginia.
- 20:52Speaker 5: You are because you're a fan.
- 20:53Speaker 7: I've had so much fun living here. And here's the deal.
- 20:56Speaker 7: I've I've lived in West Virginia this next month, it'll
- 21:00Speaker 7: we fourteen years.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, sot me.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Like you grew up essentially
- 21:06Speaker 3: in college sports.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Yes, that was your basically growing up to now.
- 21:10Speaker 7: I've traveled. Let me tell you this. I've traveled so
- 21:13Speaker 7: many places in the country to watch it sports, to
- 21:16Speaker 7: watch college sports. And I say watch that. My dad
- 21:19Speaker 7: literally would take me and I he would have me
- 21:21Speaker 7: doing a job and it was marking fowls and stuff
- 21:23Speaker 7: like that. I was on the sidelines, uh for football constantly.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Here's here was a skinny, little freaking kid and I'm
- 21:32Speaker 7: standing next to coaches, head coaches, and I'm marking fowls constantly,
- 21:35Speaker 7: and we're going up down sidelines, and you know, saying,
- 21:38Speaker 7: then you don't have you know, I don't have to
- 21:39Speaker 7: maintain the sidelines where the ashmarks are for you know,
- 21:43Speaker 7: just going up. Yeah.
- 21:45Speaker 3: So let me ask you this, how what is your
- 21:49Speaker 3: point of your perspective on the change in college sports?
- 21:52Speaker 3: We see, we see it now, we talk transfer and
- 21:55Speaker 3: all that stuff, coaches moving, we see what's going on
- 21:57Speaker 3: with lank if right now.
- 21:59Speaker 4: So what's your active one? Like the state of college sports?
- 22:02Speaker 7: You know, I it's twofold. First of all, Texas Tech
- 22:09Speaker 7: weird and awesome with old money by gas. We love you,
- 22:14Speaker 7: but I but I, but I also look back at
- 22:17Speaker 7: you know when when the players were the institution and
- 22:20Speaker 7: in the college. Degree was the best part about it all.
- 22:23Speaker 7: By god, you got educated, you walked out. You might
- 22:27Speaker 7: you might suck as a player, or you might be
- 22:30Speaker 7: just good enough. You did one good thing, and by god,
- 22:34Speaker 7: the coach will loves you because you did that one
- 22:36Speaker 7: good thing. But you walked out of there with a degree,
- 22:39Speaker 7: and you knew you could succeed in live because you
- 22:42Speaker 7: had that piece of paper and and and and for me,
- 22:45Speaker 7: it's kind of like, uh, Nick Saban's at the other day,
- 22:47Speaker 7: he goes, you know, we need to concentrate on the player.
- 22:50Speaker 7: We need to make sure that the player is taken
- 22:52Speaker 7: care of. And I still believe that, and I would
- 22:55Speaker 7: hope that it's kind of like lank Keffn's gonna he's
- 22:58Speaker 7: gonna he's gonna take if he's going l s ye,
- 23:00Speaker 7: he's taking that team with him.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Yeah, he's great, But isn't that looks sort of just
- 23:05Speaker 3: the fallacy of it all right, right, because the thing
- 23:08Speaker 3: is not only and you're right because I didn't even
- 23:09Speaker 3: think about that point. Not only will he essentially take
- 23:12Speaker 3: that whole entire team, but they're in the they're about
- 23:16Speaker 3: to make the playoffs currently now, and it's like, and
- 23:19Speaker 3: you have all these distractions, so it's impossible to not
- 23:23Speaker 3: only concentrate on what you're doing. But again, they could
- 23:26Speaker 3: literally be starting over next year and and and and
- 23:31Speaker 3: play for a championship this year. But that's kind of
- 23:33Speaker 3: on the road now because of what's going on.
- 23:35Speaker 7: And that's what's that's what's upsetting. That's where we all
- 23:39Speaker 7: agree we gotta have first of all, somebody's gotta have
- 23:42Speaker 7: the kahonas to step up and say we're gonna here's
- 23:46Speaker 7: the guardrails. And that's that's the problem. And I say this,
- 23:52Speaker 7: I can say this as a as a guy on TV,
- 23:55Speaker 7: guy who's been a mascot and and has family that
- 23:58Speaker 7: literally gets a for sport. We got to have some
- 24:02Speaker 7: guardrails and somebody got to step up and say, here's
- 24:05Speaker 7: where it starts. Here where here's where it stops. And
- 24:08Speaker 7: in more than anything, we know the portal is awesome,
- 24:12Speaker 7: and it's also the worst thing in the world. We've
- 24:15Speaker 7: got to say, okay, here's where the transport portal opens
- 24:19Speaker 7: after the National Championship and you and you've got this
- 24:23Speaker 7: time period and it needs to be like the NFL
- 24:27Speaker 7: where you can't talk to a player or a coach
- 24:30Speaker 7: or a coach and and and there's that. And so
- 24:33Speaker 7: I I in that that regard for me, and it
- 24:37Speaker 7: is just from more former mascot who happens to be
- 24:39Speaker 7: on TV a little bit, hey, that that's where things
- 24:42Speaker 7: have to have to start and to stop. You have
- 24:43Speaker 7: to have the rules, and you've got to get as
- 24:45Speaker 7: close to the NFL as you possibly can, because now
- 24:49Speaker 7: we don't like I said, Texas Tech has a seven
- 24:51Speaker 7: million dollar defensive line. Think about that. I it's criminal,
- 24:57Speaker 7: but Jacob Rodriguez should be the Heisman winner.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Wow, you know, no bias there at all.
- 25:06Speaker 6: So so what's your prediction for the game this Saturday.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Do you think it'll be a close game with Rich
- 25:11Speaker 6: Rod's team or do.
- 25:12Speaker 7: You think I really think the first half is gonna
- 25:14Speaker 7: be quite challenging because first of all, he's gonna be cold.
- 25:18Speaker 7: They travel, Yeah, you Tech recond is not played in
- 25:22Speaker 7: the cold with this team, is not played in the coal.
- 25:24Speaker 7: So we're gonna have temperatures when we start game time,
- 25:27Speaker 7: temperatures are gonna be in the thirties.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Yeah, We're just going to get in the wind.
- 25:31Speaker 7: Yeah, and so by the time the game ends, we're
- 25:33Speaker 7: gonna be We're gonna make it a forty forty two,
- 25:35Speaker 7: maybe forty five at best when starting thirties. Text sex
- 25:38Speaker 7: is not played in that. W has not played in
- 25:40Speaker 7: that either, Yeah, but but W is a little heartened
- 25:43Speaker 7: to it. And listen, W has nothing to lose at all.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Yeah, a damn thing, right, pay pretty good his last couple.
- 25:51Speaker 7: Yeah, no, they absolutely haven't.
- 25:52Speaker 5: And and uh, I put up some some upsets this year.
- 25:55Speaker 7: Listen, pet mcavee, they're awesome. They're all have to worry.
- 26:00Speaker 7: But I I really do think. I think, I think
- 26:02Speaker 7: first half is going to be the biggest challenge. But
- 26:06Speaker 7: you've seen the way the defense plays. I mean it's stupid.
- 26:09Speaker 7: I mean we're always on the Ariad offense.
- 26:12Speaker 4: By the way.
- 26:12Speaker 7: I've gotten drunk with Michael hes just so many times.
- 26:14Speaker 7: It's crazy, is getting drunk with with with the Pirate.
- 26:22Speaker 4: I'm smart. He was good for college football.
- 26:26Speaker 7: Transformational for college football in Yeah, him and and and Bummy.
- 26:30Speaker 7: I mean you really looked at what they did. They
- 26:33Speaker 7: had a huge impact on the NFL as well. But
- 26:36Speaker 7: but I you know, I god, Michael, I can tell
- 26:39Speaker 7: a ton of stories. But more than anything, Texas I
- 26:43Speaker 7: always had the Araid offense and and now it's our defense.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Defense.
- 26:49Speaker 7: Yeah, it's so it's wild to think.
- 26:51Speaker 5: But whatever takes you there, whatever works.
- 26:54Speaker 7: I've said, I never thought a million years I'd ever
- 26:57Speaker 7: be talking about national championship, and yet here for basketball
- 27:01Speaker 7: we had Chris Beard.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Whatever I think of the field level, that's what the transport.
- 27:06Speaker 3: That's a good thing about transport. Yeah, it levels the
- 27:09Speaker 3: playing field.
- 27:09Speaker 4: It did.
- 27:11Speaker 3: To that point, Hollis, I challenged that a little bit,
- 27:15Speaker 3: just because if I take you and you're my quarterback
- 27:20Speaker 3: and you leave, there's no real true guarantee because if
- 27:24Speaker 3: you're my starter, then apparently clearly you are the best guy.
- 27:30Speaker 3: But I think that what it does is that Alabama
- 27:33Speaker 3: can't have a third string quarterback that's going to get
- 27:36Speaker 3: drafted or a third string running back that's going to
- 27:38Speaker 3: get drafted. Now, we got to understand Alabama had kids
- 27:41Speaker 3: that were sitting for four years and wait until their
- 27:43Speaker 3: senior year to play. Now that kid is going somewhere else,
- 27:46Speaker 3: so the talent distribution is more level. I think that,
- 27:50Speaker 3: and again I think that is true and great for
- 27:53Speaker 3: the player it gives that gives that kid an opportunity
- 27:57Speaker 3: to shine.
- 27:57Speaker 4: That I agree with that.
- 27:59Speaker 3: But the one thing though, is you as the athlete,
- 28:05Speaker 3: you have to pick somewhere where you're gonna go that
- 28:09Speaker 3: you're going to play if you if if I'd have
- 28:12Speaker 3: picked anywhere else other than Marshall, chances are I wouldn't.
- 28:17Speaker 3: I wouldn't have played if I wanted to say, oh
- 28:19Speaker 3: I went to But after your first two years, when
- 28:23Speaker 3: you were getting All conference and you're leading the team
- 28:25Speaker 3: and tackle da da da da dada. Then you probably
- 28:28Speaker 3: would have went to Ohio State, Penn State, No to
- 28:30Speaker 3: Dame because they say, I have a proven commodity in Carley.
- 28:33Speaker 3: He's not a high school kid. Now he can go
- 28:35Speaker 3: start for us. So it's it's a little bit different now.
- 28:38Speaker 3: But again I think that they're back then, and I
- 28:42Speaker 3: think you're gonna agree with me, is there would have been loyalty.
- 28:46Speaker 5: That's true, you know, think you would be wise.
- 28:51Speaker 3: I'm just saying they were saying if all things were yes,
- 28:56Speaker 3: because they're not, because you're a proven commodity. Now again,
- 28:59Speaker 3: just to get on my so by the one thing
- 29:01Speaker 3: I don't like again w playing Texas Texas weekend. The
- 29:04Speaker 3: one thing I hate that's happening now, hate is that
- 29:07Speaker 3: we're I hate we're losing the tradition of college because
- 29:11Speaker 3: memories Thanksgiving was what Robbery read. So WV was playing
- 29:16Speaker 3: Pitt Washington, Stay playing Washington, not that day't playing USC Texas.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Tech y'all Texas A and m we hate Texas. So
- 29:24Speaker 3: that's what I'm saying. So I think this week it's
- 29:27Speaker 3: kind of like blah. I mean, it's some okay, games.
- 29:30Speaker 3: But it's like not.
- 29:31Speaker 5: The robbery games, you know what I mean. And you
- 29:35Speaker 5: you can see it.
- 29:36Speaker 3: You can you can watch it on television and see
- 29:40Speaker 3: the pressure of what that looks like and Georgia could
- 29:45Speaker 3: be because you dot to understand like this week and
- 29:48Speaker 3: then the next couple of weeks, so you had robbery week,
- 29:51Speaker 3: then the bowl games, you had the championship week, then
- 29:53Speaker 3: bowl games, so you would have had like like two
- 29:56Speaker 3: and a half good months of just very competitive, high
- 29:58Speaker 3: level football with the NFL playoffs. So now we don't
- 30:01Speaker 3: really necessarily have that because bowl games don't mean anything
- 30:04Speaker 3: no more.
- 30:05Speaker 5: I agree, you think about it.
- 30:07Speaker 6: This is the the I don't know what year anniversary
- 30:10Speaker 6: of when rich Rod had his team play Pitt. It
- 30:13Speaker 6: was Thanksgiving weekend, remember, and they kind of gone to
- 30:15Speaker 6: the National Championship and they lost.
- 30:17Speaker 3: That game.
- 30:19Speaker 7: Week he screwed that up. But you know, but you know,
- 30:23Speaker 7: as as he said, he said, you know, if if
- 30:27Speaker 7: it was today, we'd all go with him. Yeah, back
- 30:29Speaker 7: then nobody could.
- 30:31Speaker 6: Yeah, that's it's a good point, Marshall, Like we just
- 30:36Speaker 6: Marshall went through that last year.
- 30:37Speaker 7: I was like, let's go south.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Wow.
- 30:43Speaker 7: But then I will say I gotta say that, Marshall.
- 30:45Speaker 7: It was awesome how they sun up this year.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Good point, it was good point.
- 30:50Speaker 6: They could be Bowl eligible and that's that's that's just
- 30:52Speaker 6: a tribute. That's a tribute to coach Gibby for sure.
- 30:56Speaker 6: So I know you've got to go home. And so
- 30:59Speaker 6: I have a little clip that our producer Jeff's gonna play.
- 31:03Speaker 5: I was just kind of going through your reels. And
- 31:05Speaker 5: since we've got a.
- 31:06Speaker 6: Special special day coming up on Thursday, we're going to
- 31:10Speaker 6: get Brian this flashby.
- 31:11Speaker 5: So please.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Top stuffers.
- 31:18Speaker 9: Yes, and let me tell you something.
- 31:20Speaker 6: These things they are actually very very cozy.
- 31:25Speaker 7: They are so cozy and comfortable. I mean, this is
- 31:28Speaker 7: just it kind of like pants.
- 31:33Speaker 9: Jogging pants said what you calling look at the pre
- 31:37Speaker 9: print stuffing and then if you roll them down it
- 31:43Speaker 9: says the stuff Thanksgiving.
- 31:45Speaker 6: And with stuffing, we we have to hear about the
- 31:54Speaker 6: Thanksgiving dinner pants before you walk out of the studio, please, Brian.
- 31:58Speaker 7: So they was just stove top stuffing pants. I'll tell
- 32:06Speaker 7: you something about that that that this is podcast correct.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Us on the radio.
- 32:13Speaker 5: On the radio.
- 32:17Speaker 7: Yeah, so I know where my guard brails are, just like,
- 32:21Speaker 7: oh boy boy, so so here's the deal. They were
- 32:25Speaker 7: essentially stove top stuffing uh ten years ago.
- 32:28Speaker 6: If you could just see those too, that they were
- 32:30Speaker 6: per I'm not really trying to see them.
- 32:33Speaker 7: You don't preg when it went up.
- 32:35Speaker 4: Lady is pregnant.
- 32:36Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Conversation. I'm not here.
- 32:39Speaker 7: They have the extra the stuffing part over your stomach.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I'm not even I'm not even watching. I'm not even
- 32:45Speaker 4: listening to this. Just so happens.
- 32:47Speaker 7: And I didn't realize that at the time. There's a
- 32:49Speaker 7: stove pop toast, stove top stuffing pants accentuate some things
- 32:56Speaker 7: and on TV. Oh my Jesus what I said later
- 33:00Speaker 7: I went, I'm impressive.
- 33:07Speaker 4: This will never make air.
- 33:14Speaker 7: But oh my gosh, I was just demonstrating the Thanksgiving
- 33:18Speaker 7: pants and didn't realize that the way demonstrating.
- 33:22Speaker 5: Right, are they retired.
- 33:23Speaker 7: Yeah, they are retired. They've been eliminated from the wardrobe.
- 33:27Speaker 7: They don't exist.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Oh gosh, Well, Brian, we want to thank you so
- 33:31Speaker 6: much for coming in with us.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Appreciate it.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Thanksgiving the same to you guys.
- 33:37Speaker 7: And I'll say this and I say this respect because
- 33:39Speaker 7: I always cheer for W W. Marshall unless they're playing
- 33:43Speaker 7: Texas Hex.
- 33:44Speaker 4: There you go. We'll take that, all right, ladies, We'll
- 33:50Speaker 4: take a quick break and we'll be right back. All right, cats,
- 33:53Speaker 4: the kiddings.

- 35:19Speaker 2: Now back into the conversation.
- 35:21Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back. That was
- 35:25Speaker 4: a very ink Yeah.
- 35:31Speaker 5: I never know what to expect when Brian is.
- 35:34Speaker 4: I want to say, I love it. I can't come
- 35:36Speaker 4: back on and not say that. He was probably the
- 35:38Speaker 4: most enthusiastic guest that we may have had.
- 35:42Speaker 5: He's a total Red Raiders fan, for sure. He'll be
- 35:45Speaker 5: fun in Morgantown, that's for sure.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Hollis, I think you, I think you got a discussion.
- 35:50Speaker 3: But We talked about shad Or Sanders last week. He
- 35:53Speaker 3: got in the game last week, didn't have a great showing,
- 35:55Speaker 3: but he was kind of plug and play this week.
- 35:58Speaker 3: He got a full week of reps practice. This preparation.
- 36:01Speaker 3: They come out Brown's defeat the Raiders twenty four to ten.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Schador had a pretty decent game. He was eleven for
- 36:10Speaker 3: twenty two hundred and nine yards, one touchdown, one pick,
- 36:15Speaker 3: solid first go showing. This is the first Browns quarterback
- 36:19Speaker 3: to win the first start in about what out of nineteen.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Start something like that.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I don't want to say nineteen years, but out of
- 36:29Speaker 3: nineteen different brown quarterbacks starting, I believe he's the first
- 36:32Speaker 3: one to win his first start. And again we'd be
- 36:35Speaker 3: remissing we didn't missing the defense. The defense had about
- 36:38Speaker 3: ten sacks. They were all over Geno Smith. So again,
- 36:42Speaker 3: so what did we learn, if anything, about his performance
- 36:46Speaker 3: and how he showed up.
- 36:49Speaker 4: I don't know. If I want to go first, I
- 36:51Speaker 4: want to have lit well.
- 36:53Speaker 6: I mean he did, he kind of like showed some.
- 36:57Speaker 6: They played the Raiders, right, didn't they play the Las
- 36:59Speaker 6: Vegas Raiders?
- 37:00Speaker 5: Didn't? Two?
- 37:01Speaker 6: Well, that was two of their offensive coaches I think
- 37:04Speaker 6: were dismissed today, wasn't it two offensive coordinators Sean Kelly, Yeah,
- 37:10Speaker 6: and I forget one of his yeah, Chip Kelly, and
- 37:13Speaker 6: then Bob Bicknell I think it's his name, but anyway,
- 37:17Speaker 6: but that that's not the defensive side. I think I
- 37:21Speaker 6: was quite surprised when I saw the stats and heard
- 37:24Speaker 6: how well he did in the game. I saw a
- 37:27Speaker 6: clip of of Dion in the in the box watching
- 37:29Speaker 6: his son, and he was just beaming, you know, from
- 37:32Speaker 6: ear to ear when he threw a touchdown pass, his
- 37:34Speaker 6: first one in the you know, his NFL career.
- 37:37Speaker 5: I mean, I'm happy. I'm happy for him.
- 37:40Speaker 6: I'm glad that he's kind of shown the doubters that
- 37:43Speaker 6: yet he does deserve this space as a starting quarterback
- 37:46Speaker 6: for the Browns at this point in the season.
- 37:49Speaker 5: And you know, I would be amiss if if the
- 37:51Speaker 5: Browns decided.
- 37:53Speaker 6: Not to start him the rest of the season, even
- 37:55Speaker 6: after the quarterback comes out of protocol.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I think he's they already said he's going to be
- 37:59Speaker 3: the start of next yes play, all right.
- 38:02Speaker 4: So.
- 38:05Speaker 3: I'm i'm I'm I'm a little more skeptical of where
- 38:09Speaker 3: he where he may go and how and I'm not
- 38:13Speaker 3: and I'm not really like hating on him or hating
- 38:17Speaker 3: on Dion because he's Dion's son.
- 38:21Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 38:23Speaker 3: I don't know yet if he's gonna be in that
- 38:27Speaker 3: game that's gonna be the game that he's got to win.
- 38:32Speaker 4: You know that that it's a it's a.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Must win game right now when in this beating this team,
- 38:38Speaker 3: losing to that team might not necessarily matter, but there's
- 38:41Speaker 3: gonna be a point in time where there's gonna be
- 38:43Speaker 3: some pressure on him and and can he can he
- 38:47Speaker 3: do that?
- 38:47Speaker 4: Can he handle that?
- 38:50Speaker 3: I think his confidence obviously comes from his dad, So
- 38:54Speaker 3: there's never gonna be a time when he's not going
- 38:57Speaker 3: to think that he can be great. And because that
- 39:01Speaker 3: that's gonna I think that in its own right, will
- 39:03Speaker 3: carry him.
- 39:04Speaker 7: I just don't know if if there's.
- 39:08Speaker 4: That much at the quarterback position that.
- 39:10Speaker 5: He I mean, have left on their schedule.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Like I said, they play the forty nine ers next week,
- 39:17Speaker 3: let's see. Yeah, that's a pretty good I mean, forty
- 39:20Speaker 3: nine ers fighting for a playoff spot. I want to
- 39:23Speaker 3: say they played the Titans after that, then I believe
- 39:28Speaker 3: they have the.
- 39:30Speaker 5: Pressure there for sure.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I mean, I think I think it was pressure just
- 39:34Speaker 3: you know, even starting against the Raiders. I mean, Raiders
- 39:36Speaker 3: aren't very good starting, but yeah, there's pressure there, you know.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Like I said, I think he still has some bad habits.
- 39:42Speaker 3: He tends to hold the ball for a little bit long.
- 39:45Speaker 3: He tends to backpedal instead of stepping up in the pocket,
- 39:49Speaker 3: which sometimes that could be a good thing. Sometimes it's
- 39:51Speaker 3: a bad thing as far as taking sacks. But I
- 39:54Speaker 3: think if you look at his skill set as far
- 39:56Speaker 3: as the things he does well, it's like, you know,
- 39:58Speaker 3: he has elite ball placement, he has a pretty good arm.
- 40:01Speaker 3: So I think, like I said, if he can clean
- 40:03Speaker 3: up those little habits, which are gonna take some time
- 40:05Speaker 3: to clean up, that's not and again that takes you
- 40:07Speaker 3: got to play in the game and get that game
- 40:09Speaker 3: film on yourself and analyze yourself. So if I think,
- 40:12Speaker 3: if he can clean up those things. And again, last week,
- 40:15Speaker 3: I mean, excuse me, yesterday, the running game was on point.
- 40:18Speaker 3: I mean they ran the ball all over the Rats.
- 40:20Speaker 3: And again, that's the thing with this Cleveland Browns team.
- 40:22Speaker 3: They have an elite defensive line. I'm talking about elite elite.
- 40:27Speaker 3: I'm talking about mouths guard maybe the best defensive line.
- 40:33Speaker 3: We're talking all time. I mean, he's he's on track
- 40:36Speaker 3: to break the record of sacks this year. So, like
- 40:39Speaker 3: I said, if you could control that ball and he
- 40:41Speaker 3: can make tomely throws delivered where it needs to be delivered,
- 40:44Speaker 3: they can win some games, you know, closing out the season,
- 40:47Speaker 3: just from the defense.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Just from the defense, you just can't make mistakes.
- 40:51Speaker 3: You can't throw a bunch of picks, you can't have
- 40:53Speaker 3: a bunch of turnovers, and you got to move the
- 40:55Speaker 3: ball even if you're getting field goals. You know, they
- 40:57Speaker 3: could be like them, like the old Ravens teams, where hey,
- 41:00Speaker 3: you ain't got to make a touchdown every time, just
- 41:01Speaker 3: don't put the defense in turn move the ball. Even
- 41:06Speaker 3: if you punt it and you flip the field, that
- 41:09Speaker 3: can still serve the defense. So you just can't pitch
- 41:12Speaker 3: your defense in consistent bad positions. Yeah, I don't think
- 41:16Speaker 3: I don't I don't think that they. I don't know
- 41:19Speaker 3: if he is aware of that part of it. Definitely aware,
- 41:24Speaker 3: but I'm but okay, so he's aware of it. But
- 41:28Speaker 3: on the other side of it, there's a there's a
- 41:30Speaker 3: sense of greatness. You get that touch that you know
- 41:33Speaker 3: he gets that taste of greatness in this last game, so.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Now it just can you build on that.
- 41:42Speaker 3: But but again the problem with that is is how
- 41:46Speaker 3: frequently will he have to be out on the field
- 41:48Speaker 3: because of the defense is not very good and he's
- 41:50Speaker 3: got to keep getting back out there.
- 41:53Speaker 4: The defense. Yeah, the line if the more that they're
- 42:00Speaker 4: out there to have to be.
- 42:02Speaker 3: On the field, yeah, definitely, I think that's gonna I
- 42:06Speaker 3: think that's going to that could play a factor in it.
- 42:10Speaker 3: And I think that's probably what's been happening because they
- 42:12Speaker 3: are unable to move the ball. They haven't really just offensively,
- 42:15Speaker 3: they've just been in thath. I think, like I said,
- 42:17Speaker 3: I think.
- 42:17Speaker 4: If they can just run the ball, if you can
- 42:20Speaker 4: just run the ball, run the ball, play action and
- 42:23Speaker 4: just give him easy throws to make, I think I
- 42:26Speaker 4: got to make the world a difference.
- 42:27Speaker 3: And like I said, this is one of them situations
- 42:30Speaker 3: where that offense eat that clock up. Yeah, even if
- 42:33Speaker 3: you're driving, you take five to six minutes and you
- 42:35Speaker 3: just get three, eat it up.
- 42:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, keep that defense off
- 42:39Speaker 4: the field.
- 42:40Speaker 6: I think two with him being you know, a fresh quarterback,
- 42:43Speaker 6: you know, just now starting his career in the NFL.
- 42:46Speaker 6: I think that he's got to take it one day,
- 42:48Speaker 6: one game at a time, one play at a time.
- 42:50Speaker 6: Ye Like, you can't, you know, look too far ahead
- 42:53Speaker 6: or kind of look back on when you make a mistake.
- 42:55Speaker 6: He's just got to play in the moment and not
- 42:57Speaker 6: let the game get in his head one hundred percent.
- 42:59Speaker 3: And to and to that to you, Hollis like, that's
- 43:04Speaker 3: that's that winning a game, having some good stats, and look,
- 43:09Speaker 3: I'm not even looking at that.
- 43:10Speaker 4: I'm going forward because.
- 43:13Speaker 3: I'm not gonna get judged on too long. You're not
- 43:15Speaker 3: gonna get judged by that one game. You're gonna get
- 43:17Speaker 3: judged overall in how you play throughout the season, especially
- 43:22Speaker 3: if you're the guy. Yeah, And I think, like I said,
- 43:24Speaker 3: if you keep in mind that you do have that
- 43:26Speaker 3: good defense, like I said, and your offense has got
- 43:29Speaker 3: a sort of like reverse engineer itself. Like you said,
- 43:32Speaker 3: it's not always about making a big play. It's not
- 43:35Speaker 3: always about taking chances. Pitch your defense in good spots.
- 43:38Speaker 3: And like I said, they're gonna have a fumble, they're
- 43:40Speaker 3: gonna have a sack, they're gonna have some interception. They
- 43:43Speaker 3: can if you put them in a good spot. They'll
- 43:46Speaker 3: pitch you in a good spot for you to see
- 43:48Speaker 3: where you have that short feel. So I think if
- 43:50Speaker 3: you can keep that in mind, and I think if
- 43:52Speaker 3: those offensive coordinators and everything keep that in mind, I
- 43:54Speaker 3: really think they can probably win some you know, some games,
- 43:58Speaker 3: you know, to close out the season. Then the question
- 44:01Speaker 3: becomes is that, like, if he wins this game, let's
- 44:04Speaker 3: say next week, or they are they competitive, do you
- 44:07Speaker 3: bring Dylan Gabriel back once he's done with concussion protocol
- 44:10Speaker 3: or do you go with Sanders?
- 44:12Speaker 5: I mean that that was gonna be my question as well.
- 44:14Speaker 6: I mean, I think, let's hope the Browns are done
- 44:17Speaker 6: browning for a while.
- 44:21Speaker 5: And just kind of, you know, you some common sense
- 44:23Speaker 5: in this. I think that you have to leave Shador.
- 44:26Speaker 6: If continues to play like he did yesterday and he
- 44:29Speaker 6: continues to take this team and win, you have to
- 44:32Speaker 6: stick with him.
- 44:33Speaker 5: I mean you have to. You can't go back to a.
- 44:36Speaker 6: Quarterback that wasn't winning as the games, like like Schador
- 44:41Speaker 6: is capable of when he plays, and if he's winning
- 44:44Speaker 6: games when he comes out of that concussion protocol, you
- 44:47Speaker 6: got to keep going with the horse that got you there, right.
- 44:50Speaker 3: I think so, but it's going to think so, well,
- 44:54Speaker 3: now you know, and and and he's he's getting he's
- 44:58Speaker 3: getting some money, and he's gonna have and and he's
- 45:02Speaker 3: going to probably have some incentives that's going to be
- 45:04Speaker 3: starts or play time, touchdowns and all those kinds of
- 45:07Speaker 3: things that adds to his contract. He ain't gonna want
- 45:12Speaker 3: to sit, No, it isn't. But the but sometimes the
- 45:17Speaker 3: money can dictate that. And I think what could happen
- 45:21Speaker 3: is you could get into a situation where all of
- 45:23Speaker 3: a sudden there is this huge clash inside of the
- 45:27Speaker 3: locker room that that can bother the because there's going
- 45:32Speaker 3: to be a lineman who's going to think he should
- 45:34Speaker 3: be the guy as soon as he comes off of
- 45:36Speaker 3: concussion protocol he should be back in star defensive player.
- 45:39Speaker 3: He's already said who he thinks without saying right. So
- 45:43Speaker 3: so so out of this game, you know, we had
- 45:47Speaker 3: some firing. So Chip Kelly, the offensive coordinated for the Raiders,
- 45:50Speaker 3: got fire.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Who else.
- 45:51Speaker 3: It's a bunch of I think, okay, and and and
- 45:54Speaker 3: there is a bunch I don't I don't necessarily want
- 45:57Speaker 3: to go through the list.
- 45:58Speaker 6: At least no, no, I've got some, I mean, but
- 46:02Speaker 6: you know, it's it's the most wonderful time of the year,
- 46:04Speaker 6: rights when they start firing coaches in the NFL and
- 46:07Speaker 6: the collegiate level.
- 46:08Speaker 5: The collegiate has been more of a carousel than the NFL.
- 46:11Speaker 6: You know, you've had four or five really well known schools,
- 46:16Speaker 6: Brian Kelly, Chip Kelly, you got of course, James Franklin
- 46:20Speaker 6: was a few weeks ago, but still that was during
- 46:22Speaker 6: the current year. Billy Napier at Florida. So you know,
- 46:26Speaker 6: the collegiate level has been, you know, kind of crazier.
- 46:29Speaker 6: But you have had head coach Brian Dable with the Giants,
- 46:33Speaker 6: he was relieved of his duties, and then Brian Callahan.
- 46:37Speaker 5: With the with the Titans. So that's already started, all.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Right, So had been fired for basically not winning at state.
- 46:45Speaker 3: You know, the question that I'm going to post to
- 46:48Speaker 3: both of you is when coaches don't win, is it
- 46:55Speaker 3: always the coach's fault?
- 46:57Speaker 4: Should we should we be.
- 46:58Speaker 3: Thinking of firing the coach or cause again, you fire
- 47:02Speaker 3: that coach, he goes somewhere else and gets another job.
- 47:05Speaker 3: He may win or may not win, whatever the case
- 47:07Speaker 3: may be. But it's just kind of like that carousel.
- 47:12Speaker 3: But I don't like, I don't know if it's just
- 47:15Speaker 3: the head coach's fault. I mean, I know, I get
- 47:19Speaker 3: you take the blame, you have to take the blame,
- 47:22Speaker 3: but is it I don't think in any situations like
- 47:25Speaker 3: one hundred percent, one person's fault. But you may not
- 47:28Speaker 3: just be in a position where that's the best fit
- 47:31Speaker 3: for you, right you may not have a personality for that.
- 47:35Speaker 3: And it's like a Brian Kelly at LSU. To me,
- 47:38Speaker 3: I don't know why he would ever be a head
- 47:39Speaker 3: coach again because he just doesn't seem to have the
- 47:42Speaker 3: head coach personality. He'll win for a little bit, but
- 47:46Speaker 3: that personality is going to eventually wear you down. Same
- 47:49Speaker 3: thing with Chip Kelly. Those personalities sort of wear you down.
- 47:53Speaker 3: So I think it's can you can you define what
- 47:56Speaker 3: those personalities are or is it just something visible that
- 47:59Speaker 3: you can Again, this is I don't know these gentlemen,
- 48:01Speaker 3: but I'm just saying for my observation, they just seems
- 48:04Speaker 3: to be callous and not necessarily people people persons.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 48:10Speaker 3: They are football guys, they know football, They're they're really
- 48:13Speaker 3: good at their craft, but they have trouble connecting to people.
- 48:17Speaker 3: So if you can't connect to players in a way
- 48:19Speaker 3: that's on a human level and figure out a way
- 48:22Speaker 3: to get the best out of players, like you know,
- 48:24Speaker 3: Nick Saban was a hard guy. He was a tough coach,
- 48:27Speaker 3: but he seemed to relate to you on a human
- 48:29Speaker 3: level and he was able to get the best football
- 48:32Speaker 3: player in person out of you. So I don't think
- 48:34Speaker 3: if you're able to like capture that it's difficult to
- 48:38Speaker 3: move particularly and I'm and you mentioned college football, particularly
- 48:42Speaker 3: in college football, because now these guys, I don't gotta
- 48:45Speaker 3: stay here, I don't listen to you, and I maybe
- 48:48Speaker 3: making just as much or more than you far as
- 48:50Speaker 3: money is concerned, so we're almost equal. So you have
- 48:53Speaker 3: you can't treat these these quote unquote kids like kids, right,
- 48:58Speaker 3: And that's particularly true for the NFL. So it's like,
- 49:01Speaker 3: you know, I think, just to go back to your question,
- 49:05Speaker 3: while it's always your fault as the coach, but sometimes
- 49:08Speaker 3: it's just maybe a personality thinks maybe it's just an
- 49:11Speaker 3: environment thing, maybe that maybe that environment is not giving
- 49:14Speaker 3: you what you need to be successful as a coach,
- 49:16Speaker 3: right right, I think that's fair.
- 49:18Speaker 6: And to add to you, those are all valid points
- 49:20Speaker 6: and to and to add to that, it could just
- 49:22Speaker 6: be the standards of the school. I mean, you know
- 49:24Speaker 6: what's acceptable at at Alabama is is you or what's
- 49:29Speaker 6: not acceptable at Alabama will be acceptable at Marshall. Right,
- 49:32Speaker 6: you know that it's kind of like right now when
- 49:34Speaker 6: you look at them becoming bowl eligible, that's going to
- 49:36Speaker 6: be a big deal for Huntington and the fans compared
- 49:39Speaker 6: to Alabama if they're left out of the college football playoffs.
- 49:42Speaker 6: So I think sometimes you know, it's a case by
- 49:45Speaker 6: case type of scenario, and he may go to Virginia
- 49:52Speaker 6: Tech and do a fabulous job, but the standards there
- 49:55Speaker 6: are going to be a little lower because of the
- 49:57Speaker 6: state that the football program.
- 50:01Speaker 3: To that point, are there any good college football coaching
- 50:05Speaker 3: jobs now?
- 50:06Speaker 4: Are?
- 50:07Speaker 3: And I say that because what I'm saying is, though jobs,
- 50:11Speaker 3: what are the good jobs? Because for example, like if
- 50:15Speaker 3: you were at Kentucky, you were to pay football coach
- 50:17Speaker 3: at Kentucky, you win seven, six to maybe nine games
- 50:22Speaker 3: a year. If you were kind of in that range,
- 50:24Speaker 3: you're good. We don't really have that much expectation for you.
- 50:27Speaker 3: If you can kind of keep us in a bowl
- 50:29Speaker 3: or keep us both eligible every year.
- 50:31Speaker 4: We're good. Now you got the playoffs.
- 50:33Speaker 3: So now if you're not inching towards the playoffs, gone
- 50:39Speaker 3: l s U again, if you're not national champions GOL,
- 50:44Speaker 3: it's not even pin right, it's not even good enough
- 50:47Speaker 3: to get to the playoffs no more. So I was
- 50:50Speaker 3: like outside the money, like, what are the good jobs anymore?
- 50:55Speaker 3: I don't know if per level, I don't know if
- 51:00Speaker 3: if the jobs necessarily are.
- 51:03Speaker 4: Different because the expectations are all the same.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Now, there was a time when I think that there
- 51:09Speaker 3: were teams who just was going to have a winning
- 51:12Speaker 3: record and they were okay with that. That's gone. We
- 51:16Speaker 3: don't want that, we.
- 51:17Speaker 5: Don't Is it gone?
- 51:18Speaker 4: I mean I think it's gone.
- 51:21Speaker 3: I don't think any coach could survive right around five
- 51:28Speaker 3: and seven, five, six and six, whatever, because now you
- 51:31Speaker 3: got twelve opportunities to get into the playoffs.
- 51:34Speaker 4: So it's like now I'm thinking, like I want in
- 51:36Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 51:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think I understand that that that that.
- 51:39Speaker 6: Want, But I also want to look at reality, which
- 51:42Speaker 6: I'm thinking about teams like in our home state, like
- 51:45Speaker 6: WVU and Marshall, like that's just not a reality, Like
- 51:48Speaker 6: We're not going to fire rich Rod this year because
- 51:50Speaker 6: we're not in the playoff picture, right And the same
- 51:53Speaker 6: with you know, Gibbie and Huntington. We're going to be
- 51:55Speaker 6: happy with what he did because of what he came
- 51:57Speaker 6: in to deal with.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Those situations are.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Because we've seen people happy, excited about don't go long
- 52:06Speaker 3: term as well. But I'll even give it, I'll even
- 52:09Speaker 3: I'll even say that a year. Marshall and WVU I
- 52:13Speaker 3: think are in great comfort level right now. But are
- 52:16Speaker 3: they because even if you look at enough Huff, Huff
- 52:19Speaker 3: won a conference championship sending after a player in the NFL,
- 52:25Speaker 3: and he didn't get an extension, right. So so what
- 52:28Speaker 3: I'm saying is like even in school, like Marshall, we
- 52:31Speaker 3: have that success like story. I'm with you, Hollis, and
- 52:37Speaker 3: I was gonna I was gonna make the point that
- 52:40Speaker 3: the fan base is not okay with you being okay
- 52:46Speaker 3: every head.
- 52:47Speaker 4: I don't think that's gone.
- 52:49Speaker 3: And and if and and if you dare make a
- 52:51Speaker 3: playoff and then and then next season not make it.
- 52:56Speaker 4: The conversation now is about you going.
- 52:58Speaker 5: The expectations just keep the more they want.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Because I think even with rich Rod, I think they're
- 53:03Speaker 3: gonna give him a muggin this year. We'll see next year,
- 53:07Speaker 3: the year after that. Okay, And I'm telling you, in
- 53:08Speaker 3: about three years, the fan base is gonna be like, okay,
- 53:11Speaker 3: we need to be inching towards something.
- 53:12Speaker 4: Yeah, And I'm telling they're gonna get it paid. And
- 53:14Speaker 4: we got to see it, and we got to see it,
- 53:16Speaker 4: and if.
- 53:17Speaker 3: We don't see it, it starts that mumbling starts again.
- 53:21Speaker 4: So bring me back to my question.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Are there it is their good jobs outside of you
- 53:26Speaker 3: just maybe making it to a level, getting a big
- 53:30Speaker 3: salary and possibly getting a big payoff.
- 53:32Speaker 4: I think it's I.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Think the way the way that I would see a
- 53:38Speaker 3: I'll say a good coach who let's say just had
- 53:41Speaker 3: a winning record, who's turned a program around to at
- 53:45Speaker 3: least a winning record, the moment that I get to
- 53:49Speaker 3: eight nine wins, I'm looking, I'm looking before you come
- 53:55Speaker 3: to me. I think that's reason why a lot of
- 53:57Speaker 3: these coaches you're looking for the next job, for the
- 54:00Speaker 3: next job, because and I think a lot of coaches
- 54:03Speaker 3: are already in that mindset. You're not gonna there's no
- 54:07Speaker 3: reason to stay and win at a lower level.
- 54:12Speaker 5: Unless you have some type of connection unless.
- 54:14Speaker 4: You have some kind of body, you're an.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Alumni, or he's played there.
- 54:17Speaker 3: I think the last thing that you want to do
- 54:20Speaker 3: is go to the next level. Gives them that next level,
- 54:22Speaker 3: because I mean even if you look at like Lincoln Rally, right,
- 54:25Speaker 3: he's the head coach at USC, he was at Oklahoma,
- 54:28Speaker 3: had hisman winners. We're doing the good USC and now
- 54:33Speaker 3: they ain't even starting to be like, yeah, what's going on?
- 54:35Speaker 4: Is going on? We ain't doing much over here? Like
- 54:37Speaker 4: the road, it's like day you don't.
- 54:40Speaker 3: An opportunity, and and and I don't even and again
- 54:44Speaker 3: I don't even think. I don't think that the fan
- 54:47Speaker 3: base understands that from a as soon as you start,
- 54:50Speaker 3: as soon as there's a feel of yeah, we're losing
- 54:54Speaker 3: belief in you. The ad, the president, all of the
- 54:58Speaker 3: US are like thinking about money.
- 55:00Speaker 6: I mean they want to sell season tickets, they want
- 55:02Speaker 6: the fans in the stands. And if you're not winning,
- 55:04Speaker 6: people aren't going because I mean that's just the way
- 55:06Speaker 6: it is.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Will we ever see like a Joe Paterno, a mac
- 55:10Speaker 3: brown donnelan, Will we see those coaches who because you
- 55:14Speaker 3: I remember even Joe Paturna. Right, he had like nine
- 55:16Speaker 3: losing seasons in Penning State, like in the beginning of
- 55:19Speaker 3: all that it was back in the day, different time.
- 55:22Speaker 3: But will we see that coach who's going to stay
- 55:24Speaker 3: at a school for ten fifty be an institution, not
- 55:27Speaker 3: like a Beamer down at VIRGINIAA. No, is that are
- 55:32Speaker 3: those days done?
- 55:33Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 55:34Speaker 5: I think they may be.
- 55:35Speaker 6: I think unless unless a coach like like like we've
- 55:39Speaker 6: got the situation right now in Morgantown, like he goes
- 55:41Speaker 6: somewhere else and then he comes back to retire.
- 55:43Speaker 5: I really feel like rich Roald will.
- 55:45Speaker 6: Probably retire from wh I think so, and those kind
- 55:49Speaker 6: of situations. They may stay, but it's not going to
- 55:52Speaker 6: be a legacy like you're talking about years.
- 55:55Speaker 5: I don't think it means. I hope I'm wrong.
- 55:58Speaker 4: And I just hate that because it's like again, it's
- 56:00Speaker 4: just like the tradition of what we know of college
- 56:03Speaker 4: sports football, basketball, it's really gone.
- 56:07Speaker 6: It is.
- 56:08Speaker 4: It's done. Like we don't have the ribbery games no more.
- 56:11Speaker 3: We're not going to have that coach who's just to
- 56:13Speaker 3: your point, at least is like an institutionari's part of
- 56:16Speaker 3: the university, you know, the the you know, the Eddie Robinson's,
- 56:19Speaker 3: the like the Beamers of Paterno's and all those guys,
- 56:22Speaker 3: the Kneelings.
- 56:23Speaker 4: It's like those days are.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Just and and and and to prove that, you know,
- 56:29Speaker 3: I'm not sure exactly how long coach Brook was at Marshall,
- 56:32Speaker 3: but you could have easily thought, okay, so and I
- 56:39Speaker 3: think about it, just when's the last time anybody talked about,
- 56:44Speaker 3: oh how great we were? When when coach brewok was
- 56:46Speaker 3: there like that that conversation shouldn't be gone, But it's
- 56:51Speaker 3: it's it seems gone because now we're here in this
- 56:54Speaker 3: moment and who's there?
- 56:56Speaker 6: Now?
- 56:56Speaker 4: Should he stay or should he go?
- 56:58Speaker 3: I mean we just I mean it's it's constant moving
- 57:01Speaker 3: on to stay in or going?
- 57:03Speaker 4: How re hirings? How are we somebody or firing?
- 57:07Speaker 6: So we've had this conversation that the Marshall Thundering Herd
- 57:10Speaker 6: team of the nineties under Bob Prue would not have
- 57:13Speaker 6: existed today.
- 57:14Speaker 5: I mean, there's no way he could have kept Pennington there.
- 57:17Speaker 6: Loss there, that team would not have gelled and stuck
- 57:20Speaker 6: together for the amount of time they did to win
- 57:21Speaker 6: a national championship.
- 57:22Speaker 5: That they would have been raided. Marshall's team would.
- 57:25Speaker 3: Have been raided, and who and and why can't you
- 57:28Speaker 3: see that from a from a from the outside knowing
- 57:33Speaker 3: that all this, all this moving around opportunity is never
- 57:38Speaker 3: going to build you a foundation of a true team.
- 57:42Speaker 3: And I think, like I said, man, I think it's
- 57:44Speaker 3: just it's bad for college sports in general, and this
- 57:48Speaker 3: is basketball and football particularly, and I just think we
- 57:52Speaker 3: have to figure out a way to, like surprise point,
- 57:55Speaker 3: to get guardrails on it where we can not only
- 57:57Speaker 3: police and guardrail the players, but I think the coaches
- 58:00Speaker 3: need guardrails too, because you can't like I said, it's
- 58:05Speaker 3: like I can't.
- 58:06Speaker 4: I can't even fathom.
- 58:07Speaker 3: Like Mississippi the they're the old miss is in the
- 58:12Speaker 3: mix to get to the playoffs and they're talking about
- 58:15Speaker 3: part poaching the coach before the season is even.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Like it's like right now, like what are.
- 58:22Speaker 3: You talking about? How is that not tampering? Like how
- 58:26Speaker 3: what are we doing? Like it's like you're you're having
- 58:29Speaker 3: a run. There's no way I would if I was
- 58:31Speaker 3: the A D number either you leave now, like if
- 58:35Speaker 3: you're gonna go, go go, you know what I'm saying.
- 58:37Speaker 3: But on the other hand, of that.
- 58:38Speaker 4: I'm I'm saying to like the bigger college sports administration, like,
- 58:42Speaker 4: we have to stop it. You can't poach my coach
- 58:44Speaker 4: in the middle of my season because what does that
- 58:46Speaker 4: do to the kids. But they're gone gone to wherever
- 58:52Speaker 4: he goes, they don't go, so he not only do
- 58:54Speaker 4: I lose my coach, I lose my team too.
- 58:56Speaker 5: It's gonna be a repeated what happened to Marshall?
- 58:59Speaker 3: Come on, man, well, I'm sure this won't be the
- 59:03Speaker 3: last time we'll have this discussion.
