- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:03Freedom. It's Thursday, April 9th, twenty twenty six.
- 0:06Today, authors warn the Trump administration not to accept a simmering,
- 0:11low-level standoff with Iran like America did with Iraq between 1991 and 2003.
- 0:16The GoodFellows invite you to attend a live episode taping later this month. And
- 0:21the Reflections series explores how the Hoover Afghanistan Research & Relief Team
- 0:26(HART) came to be in 2021.
- 0:28How a Cease-Fire Can Lead to Disaster.
- 0:30In Foreign Affairs, Visiting Fellow Samuel Helfont and Daniel Chardell warn
- 0:34against approaching peace with Iran the way US presidents did with Saddam
- 0:38Hussein’s Iraq after the success of Operation Desert Storm. Both George H. W.
- 0:43Bush and Bill Clinton sought to “contain” Iraq, with no-fly zones, sanctions, and
- 0:47diplomatic pressure. “Trying to contain Iran, as the United States did to Iraq in
- 0:52the 1990s, will inexorably lead to repeated confrontations that tie up
- 0:56American forces and harm the international economy, eroding what
- 0:59little international support remains for U.S. policy in the region,” the authors
- 1:04write. Instead, they say, the Trump administration should be prepared “to
- 1:08take yes for an answer” from Tehran and accept a deal that offers diplomatic and
- 1:12economic normalization in exchange for Iran’s de-nuclearization, limiting its
- 1:17missile program, and ending support for its proxies.
- 1:20Join the GoodFellows for a Discussion on the US Constitution.
- 1:23The Hoover Institution invites you to join us for a special in-person taping of
- 1:28GoodFellows the evening of Wednesday, April 22, at Hoover’s Hauck Auditorium.
- 1:33Economist John Cochrane, historian Neil Ferguson, and geopolitical strategist and
- 1:38scholar H.R. McMaster will be joined by moderator Bill Whalen to explore why the
- 1:43US Constitution remains one of the most consequential frameworks ever devised for
- 1:48governing a nation. This live taping brings the GoodFellows conversation from
- 1:53the studio to the public stage, offering a rare opportunity to experience the show
- 1:58in person. We’ll also have limited-edition GoodFellows merchandise
- 2:02available on site for purchase (via credit or debit card only). During the
- 2:07registration process, you can submit a question for the GoodFellows that may be
- 2:11discussed during a portion of the event.
- 2:14How the Hoover Afghanistan Research & Relief Team Came To Be.
- 2:17In the latest video released for the Reflections series, Senior Fellow H.R.
- 2:21McMaster discusses the origins and evolution of the Hoover Afghanistan
- 2:25Research & Relief Team, established in the wake of the
- 2:27chaotic US military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, when the Taliban
- 2:32regained power. McMaster
- 2:34describes how a program that began as an emergency initiative to support and fill
- 2:39gaps in the US government’s efforts to evacuate refugees transitioned to collect
- 2:43and preserve historical materials on the war in Afghanistan, including oral
- 2:48histories, at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives.
- 2:51US Grand Strategy and the China Factor with Nadia Schadlow.
- 2:55On the latest episode of China Considered, Senior Fellow Elizabeth
- 2:58Economy speaks with Nadia Schadlow, former
- 3:01deputy national security advisor for strategy in the first Trump
- 3:05administration and author of the influential 2017 National Security
- 3:10Strategy.
- 3:10Schadlow reflects on how the NSS was built around the accelerating great-power
- 3:15competition with China and America's four core national security interests:
- 3:20protecting the homeland and way of life; promoting American prosperity; preserving
- 3:25peace through strength; and advancing American influence. The conversation
- 3:30moves through key differences between the first and second Trump administrations,
- 3:35including process, tone, and the role of ideology in foreign policy, before
- 3:40turning to a substantive debate about the limits of multilateral institutions and
- 3:45Schadlow's argument in a recent Foreign Affairs essay that state-centric
- 3:50approaches can outperform global governance frameworks.
- 3:53China’s Iran Calculus.
- 3:55In a new edition of China Considered Quick Takes, Elizabeth Economy evaluates
- 3:59how China is using observations of the US-Israeli war against Iran to inform its
- 4:04own assessment of future challenges posed by the United States. While China has
- 4:09publicly condemned US and Israeli strikes and reaffirmed its ties to Iran, Economy
- 4:13shows that the more important story lies behind the scenes, where Chinese analysts
- 4:18are debating what the conflict means for American credibility, military power, and
- 4:23the broader strategic balance. She argues that the war is being read in Beijing
- 4:28through several competing lenses: as evidence of US strategic overreach, as a
- 4:32reminder of enduring American military superiority, and as a test of how
- 4:36instability affects China’s own interests.
- 4:39This Month in Hoover History: Hoover Hosts House Select Committee on China.
- 4:43On April 6–7, 2023, the Hoover Institution hosted the US House Select
- 4:47Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese
- 4:52Communist Party. The bipartisan group of ten members exchanged ideas with numerous
- 4:57Hoover fellows on issues concerning the conduct of the Chinese Communist Party.
