Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mark Gilbert: Former US Ambassador to New Zealand on the upcoming debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's going to be a hard job policing these two.
- 0:02Speaker 1: A big day in the US, the first presidential debate
- 0:05Speaker 1: since Joe Biden quit the race. So I guess it's
- 0:07Speaker 1: Trump's second presidential debate of this election season, his first
- 0:11Speaker 1: against Kamala Harris. What is going to happen and does
- 0:14Speaker 1: it really matter? Mark Gilbert joins us. He's a former
- 0:17Speaker 1: US ambassador and Democrat Party member. He's joining us from
- 0:20Speaker 1: Park City, Utah, this morning. Mark, Good morning, thanks for
- 0:23Speaker 1: being on the show.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning, Ryan, Kiotta tell.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Me what's your read? Here? Is what happens today? Going
- 0:33Speaker 1: to move the dial make a difference?
- 0:37Speaker 2: I believe that it could. First of all, this is,
- 0:41Speaker 2: as you just mentioned, the vice president's first presidential debate,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and a lot of the polling shows that many people
- 0:49Speaker 2: across the unit as they really don't know her. So
- 0:52Speaker 2: this will be a great opportunity for her to be seen.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And the expectation is that debate will exceed more than
- 1:02Speaker 2: fifty million people, maybe as many as sixty million people
- 1:05Speaker 2: will watch.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Harris says Trump is not burdened by telling the truth.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Does that matter? I mean, he's been elected previously, we
- 1:16Speaker 1: know he's got form in that area. Do people care?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Does it matter if he's not trying to tell the truth.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Should she try and fact chicken like Hillary Clinton did?
- 1:27Speaker 2: I think she will, And I think this is different
- 1:30Speaker 2: than twenty sixteen. You know, back in twenty sixteen, he
- 1:35Speaker 2: was seen into an outsider. His independence was seen through
- 1:39Speaker 2: the kind of comments that he made and actually a
- 1:42Speaker 2: little bit of a bullying with Secretary Clinton. I don't
- 1:46Speaker 2: believe that that is how people look at it today,
- 1:50Speaker 2: because he has said some things, especially that people just
- 1:54Speaker 2: look at him and go, oh my god, I can't
- 1:56Speaker 2: possibly be true. So I do think will make a difference,
- 2:01Speaker 2: But of course it will matter how the Vice president
- 2:04Speaker 2: addresses that, whether she fax checks in in real time
- 2:08Speaker 2: or basically says, you know, here you go, that's just
- 2:12Speaker 2: another lie. Let me tell everyone. What the real truth
- 2:15Speaker 2: is is.
- 2:16Speaker 1: How vulnerable is she on the border and inflation that
- 2:20Speaker 1: incumbency issue that she's got from being attached to Biden.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So the border probably would have been her largest negative
- 2:29Speaker 2: issue until the President told the Republican Party to take
- 2:34Speaker 2: the bill that their party actually negotiated and throw it
- 2:38Speaker 2: out because he wanted it as a campaign issue. So
- 2:43Speaker 2: I believe that that's something that is actually backfired for him,
- 2:47Speaker 2: and the numbers at the border have dramatically closed. As
- 2:52Speaker 2: far as how people see which party's fault, it is,
- 2:55Speaker 2: as a matter of fact, a lot of people see
- 2:57Speaker 2: it as both parties fault, and that's some thing that
- 3:00Speaker 2: I personally agree with.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard to see how it could be anything,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but given the numbers over so many different presidencies, right, Mark,
- 3:09Speaker 1: thank you very much for joining us this morning. Really
- 3:11Speaker 1: appreciate your time and enjoy the debate. Mark Gilbert, former
- 3:14Speaker 1: US Ambassador and Democrat Party member, joining us from Park City, Utah.
