- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:06Our goal is to not only share our sermons, but to go beyond
- 0:09the sermon in conversations about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in our lives and our community.
- 0:15You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:17fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:21conversation. We get you in trouble with
- 0:24people right off the bat. What was the best thing you ate
- 0:27at the potluck on Palm Sunday? I mean, it's just so rare to
- 0:33have good BBQ. So Steve Baudelaire's pulled
- 0:38pork. And.
- 0:40Homemade sauce. I had it with the homemade
- 0:42sauce. Takes it to another level.
- 0:45Good. I always look forward to so the
- 0:47jambalaya like and it was at the end of the line, so my plate was
- 0:50already full. I was like, no, I got to come
- 0:51back. That was delicious, as was there
- 0:55was some kind of chicken enchilada.
- 0:57Oh yeah. That was that was tasty.
- 0:59Yeah. I don't think I ate anything
- 1:01that was bad. Yeah, I got the last shrimp and
- 1:04that shrimp thing. Oh.
- 1:05Yeah, that was gone by the time I got there.
- 1:07The deviled eggs were gone by the time I got there.
- 1:12There was 1 scoop of green bean casserole left by the time I got
- 1:16there. The Lord provides that was a
- 1:19good time. And then our our kids got
- 1:21together for the quickest of mission team meetings.
- 1:24It was good. And yeah, and our Sunday schools
- 1:28combined because it was fifth Sunday, which I would love to
- 1:32hear your, your story. One of the small group questions
- 1:38was a time that you followed the advice of a peer and you
- 1:43shouldn't have it followed the advice of a peer.
- 1:45Oh. Gosh, I don't listen to bad
- 1:48advice very often. Or if you listen that that's
- 1:52what makes it good advice. Right.
- 1:57Maybe as simple as a bad food recommendation, because I know
- 2:00I'm not on that list. Or one of the worst times I
- 2:05listened to a friend was when a friend said, hey, there's this
- 2:14race coming up, we should run this race.
- 2:18No training. I had not run distance at that
- 2:23point in my life. I've been doing some workout
- 2:26exercises and you know, stuff like that, some lifting and that
- 2:29kind of stuff was not a runner. 25K race.
- 2:35For those of you in the US, that's about 15 miles and the
- 2:41race was in five weeks. And so I went from not running
- 2:48to almost dying on a 25K race 5 weeks later.
- 2:57It was terrible for multiple reasons.
- 3:00Oh yeah. Where was the race held?
- 3:04At the source of the Nile in Uganda.
- 3:08That's pretty cool. At least location's cool to make
- 3:11it worth it to push and torture yourself.
- 3:14Yeah, but 100% do not recommend. Yeah, no, I think I found like
- 3:24with a lot of people with backpacking, it seems like the
- 3:30first time is always horrible because you're unprepared.
- 3:32You don't know what to anticipate, all that kind of
- 3:36stuff. So like.
- 3:36Bad gear choices. Oh yeah, my first time was
- 3:40Horrible Joey, who tried to make me a degenerate gambler.
- 3:45If you're in Sunday school, you understand.
- 3:47You know, my first time I took him backpacking, he wore jeans
- 3:52and like we did 20 miles that day.
- 3:56That's a choice. It was a choice.
- 3:58And his chub rub rose so bad between his thighs that he bled.
- 4:02Yeah. And at, like, the mile 19 mark,
- 4:05he was waddling like a cowboy who likes rabbit bars.
- 4:08Yeah, we have to call him a night.
- 4:10This isn't good for anybody. And so.
- 4:14Yikes. Yeah.
- 4:15So I'm sure I was probably the friend that at that time he was
- 4:19like, I shouldn't have listened, but he was just overly
- 4:21confident, which is a poor characteristic sometimes of his
- 4:28within your sermon. I was really interested in feel
- 4:34like it's probably the last third of your sermon talking
- 4:37about you seeking the lowest seat.
- 4:40Yeah. Could you start us off by
- 4:44refreshing us on what you meant by finding the lowest seat?
- 4:48Sure, given time. Yeah, so in in Luke 14, Jesus
- 4:52tells a parable about he says, you know, imagine you go to a
- 4:56wedding feast and you choose a high seat and the host comes to
- 5:01you and says, oh, sorry, there's someone more important than you.
- 5:05You need to go and sit over here and then or imagine if you sat
- 5:11in a low seat and then the host comes in, they're like, oh, no,
- 5:14friend, come and sit up here where the important people are.
- 5:17That is kind of the idea of it. And so then the principle that
- 5:22that's come out of it for me is, you know, whatever situation I
- 5:27find myself in, what's the lowest seat God will allow me to
- 5:33take? And I don't usually mean that in
- 5:37an actual literal sense of like. Kid chair from the nursery.
- 5:41Kid chair from the nursery at, you know, the toddler table.
- 5:45But like in leadership, in ministry, as opportunities
- 5:50present themselves as I find myself in context of leadership
- 5:55and stuff like how can I choose to take the lowest seat that God
- 6:01will let me rather than trying to grasp my way higher or, you
- 6:10know, jump the the class and, and get to the, the top seat.
- 6:16And so that's kind of become a life principle for me.
- 6:19Take the low seat. That's the recap.
- 6:22What was the question question? Is when were you shooting for
- 6:30the lower seat? You were pushed into a higher
- 6:35place of position and you really wish you could have stayed in
- 6:40that lower seat. You mean like becoming a senior
- 6:44pastor? Yeah.
- 6:48Yeah, I mean. There was a long time I was
- 6:49quite content to stay in an associate pastor kind of role.
- 6:55I'm living it, I'm loving it. Yeah, I mean, that would be a
- 6:59very easy one. I wasn't particularly looking to
- 7:04become a senior pastor. I've told the story on here
- 7:08before about, you know, where we were at Trinity and asking God
- 7:13about church planting and that kind of stuff.
- 7:15And we've gotten to the point where we're like, OK, Jesus,
- 7:18we'll just stay here and be faithful here and do what you're
- 7:22asking us to do. And then all of a sudden here we
- 7:26are being announced as senior pastor, like didn't quite see
- 7:31that coming, or at least certainly not that way.
- 7:36And so that's, that's an easy one to point to.
- 7:38But I think even when we're in Uganda, because of the way
- 7:44missionary life works, there's always people coming and going
- 7:50from the field because they've got to go back and do
- 7:54fundraising, life events happen, They've got kids graduating,
- 8:00going to college, you know, that kind of stuff.
- 8:02And so people are always coming and going.
- 8:04And, and definitely found myself early on.
- 8:10Gosh, we got there in May and I want to say it was like July.
- 8:17We had, you know, kind of gotten settled in and then our, our
- 8:21teammates told us, hey, we just found out we're pregnant with
- 8:26twins and we're going to be going back to the states to have
- 8:33the twins there. And so that happened fairly
- 8:38quickly. We were left there 8 hours
- 8:42outside of the capital, only missionaries with our
- 8:45organization and very quickly became, you know, the one
- 8:51everyone was asking questions to about our pastoral training
- 8:54program and setting things up and what else needs you know,
- 8:58and all that kind of stuff. And again, not a role I was
- 9:03ready for or looking for. But you do what you got to do
- 9:08when God doesn't give you any other options.
- 9:12Any instances in your life? I mean, it's not your life
- 9:16principle, so you don't have to say yes, but.
- 9:18Yeah, no, it's in the youth ministry as well as, as I tell
- 9:23my volunteers and my kids, I loved being a youth volunteer.
- 9:28Yeah, like I was gonna say you couldn't find a better youth
- 9:33volunteer, but he definitely could.
- 9:36He definitely could. Now that I'm a youth pastor, I
- 9:38was like, oh, as a volunteer towards the youth, like
- 9:42leadership, I might have not been the best really great with
- 9:44the kids, but I don't do good with power structures.
- 9:49Yeah. So I think that switch and
- 9:51transition was definitely not the role that I was seeking.
- 9:56And this was not a role I was seeking.
- 10:01And even like, I think more like temporary roles where like when
- 10:05you went away out West and it was like, OK, got a hold down
- 10:10the Fort. Luckily everything's usually
- 10:13calm and chill through the week and got preach step up and
- 10:19people help me with like other parts of the service and then
- 10:23that first week everything. Didn't quite go smooth.
- 10:28Had to all the stuff going on with the Mayfair to go to plan.
- 10:33No musicians of our musicians were there that Sunday.
- 10:39That was not known to me when you were leaving and known to
- 10:41anybody. And so having to put together a
- 10:44praise team for that Sunday and practice with them on top of the
- 10:50all the other prep and the mayor and the all those things I
- 10:54forget. And so that was definitely like
- 10:59I for me, my anticipation was as low as possible while while
- 11:06still fulfilling the duties. Right, right.
- 11:08And then I ended up being the leader of everything.
- 11:12That's fun, isn't? It, that's a word, but God
- 11:17provided, and it was a way to just see him at work and provide
- 11:21through everything. And sure, it built more of my
- 11:23confidence and faith in Him, which I think any experience
- 11:28that does that is well worth it. And I wouldn't trade it for
- 11:31anything. Yeah, you'd mentioned the
- 11:34difficulty. You mentioned in your sermon the
- 11:37difficulty some have with cross racial appointments.
- 11:42Growing up at Pittman, we did have an associate at one point,
- 11:46Pastor Kim. But he's the reason why I'm
- 11:49really good at ping pong. Korean pastor.
- 11:52And he had a custom paddle from Korea.
- 11:55Oh yeah. And that's why I hold the ping
- 11:59pong paddle more pen style they call it, which for most people's
- 12:04like upside down. I hold it upside down is because
- 12:06of him. And there were interesting
- 12:10dynamics that I wasn't aware of until later.
- 12:12As a youth, I'm just like, yeah, but just that at the time we had
- 12:17a female pastor above him. And within the Korean church,
- 12:21they don't normally have the women lead over the men.
- 12:25And so I think that was interesting happening.
- 12:28And I can see the sometimes cultural differences, and then
- 12:34sometimes it's like, well, they have an accent that's hard to
- 12:36understand. Sometimes it's just as simple as
- 12:38that. Get upset or or have but I found
- 12:42that cross racial appointments specifically in the Catholic
- 12:46Church is one of the most beautiful things I've seen where
- 12:52again the better or worse for various reasons the consistency
- 13:00of the Catholic Church their services.
- 13:02The how? They're run all over the world,
- 13:06leads to a place where with the consistent service and the
- 13:11consistent theology throughout the Catholic Church that you're
- 13:15able to flip flop pastors and people kind of generally know
- 13:20what they're getting theologically during the
- 13:23service. And so I was in the Poconos at
- 13:26our Pocono house and got to visit, oh, maybe it was a
- 13:32funeral for my neighbor. I know I've gotten to go a
- 13:35couple services and there was a guy from, he was from Nigeria
- 13:41who the main pastor was away on a sabbatical or something else
- 13:47for a couple of months. And they flew a guy in from
- 13:49Nigeria and he was their interim pastor for a couple of months.
- 13:53And he did the service or the funeral, whichever.
- 13:56And I was like, this is incredible.
- 13:59Yeah. Like, I like this feels like the
- 14:02universal church, the Catholic Church.
- 14:04Yeah. The Church of the world that God
- 14:07is doing that we're able to just brothers and sisters, like the
- 14:11gospel. Yeah.
- 14:13Yeah, because like the the Catholic Church has kind of
- 14:15created its own culture that goes beyond whatever the local
- 14:22cultures are. Yeah.
- 14:23And so for me, that was just such a beautiful reflection of
- 14:27God's church all over the world. I was like, man, I wish that
- 14:30when Scott left, I didn't have to do all the things.
- 14:34And someone from another part of the world, you know, especially
- 14:36as the gospel and the church is growing and spreading in other
- 14:41parts of the world and the church is much stronger.
- 14:46Is that a decent term? True in multiple continents.
- 14:50And so to have them be able to come here and pour in to the
- 14:54local congregation, whether it be small, interim or even when
- 14:58we start seeking new pastors of the fruit that could potentially
- 15:02be of someone else. And so, yeah.
- 15:06Yeah, I didn't say in in attempt to say that cross racial
- 15:11appointments are a bad thing. Oh no.
- 15:14So. If that came across I.
- 15:15No, no, but I I understand that. I've I've seen many churches not
- 15:21accept, yeah, cross racial appointments.
- 15:23Well, and usually it can be something that as simple as
- 15:26just. They're hard to understand.
- 15:29Or the illustrations they use I can't connect with because the
- 15:33context they grew up in and learn is different than what I
- 15:37grew up in and learned. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:40And then I have here, as you were talking about privilege and
- 15:44entitlement, where's an area that maybe surprised you at some
- 15:50point that you were privileged or entitled to something, but
- 15:55you just, it was so normalized in your life that you didn't
- 15:59recognize it until some pivotal moment.
- 16:04Yeah, I'll give you 2 opposite examples.
- 16:08One was, you know, when we went to Uganda, we wanted to get in
- 16:14among the people and, you know, go to the local markets and do
- 16:19the, you know, go to the, the local hospitals.
- 16:22And like, we weren't so concerned about trying to find
- 16:26everything that felt so familiar to us.
- 16:28We wanted to get into the culture and and we quickly
- 16:31realized we couldn't because of the color of our skin.
- 16:35We weren't treated poorly because of the color of our
- 16:38skin. We're actually treated much
- 16:40better because of the color of our skin.
- 16:43And because the assumption was, oh, you're a white person here
- 16:47in Uganda, That means you've got money.
- 16:51So there were times, you know, there, there's time.
- 16:53I, one of our boys had fallen, gotten pushed a little bit, cut
- 16:58the back of his head on a stool. We had to get stitches, but so I
- 17:04went to, you know, the clinic in town and was prepared to wait.
- 17:08I mean, he wasn't bleeding profusely or anything.
- 17:10We had like, gotten the blood, the bleeding slowed down and all
- 17:13that kind of stuff. You know, sat down in the
- 17:17waiting room, told him her name while we were there.
- 17:20And it was like 30 seconds later in a room that was fairly full
- 17:26of other people who had been waiting longer than us.
- 17:28And they're like, all right, come on back.
- 17:29Like, but they tell their people like and they wouldn't let me
- 17:34stay in the waiting room and that was really hard,
- 17:39frustrating. Had to really wrestle through
- 17:43that one other way, realizing the privilege that comes is I
- 17:54guess it was back in probably around like 2019-2020.
- 18:01Yeah, I was probably like part of the peak of my running as an
- 18:07adult. You know, I mentioned earlier
- 18:10the, the poor training, but you know, the height of my training
- 18:13and running half marathons and 10 KS and different things and,
- 18:18you know, never felt any issue. Go.
- 18:22We were living in Mullica Hill. I'd go out, I'd go running down
- 18:26all these little country roads and around developments, even if
- 18:29it wasn't ours, and never thought twice about it, never
- 18:33felt concerned for my safety or anything like that.
- 18:36And a young man in, I believe it was Georgia, his name was Ahmad
- 18:45Arbery, an African American guy was running in someone's
- 18:53neighborhood. A couple people saw him, didn't
- 18:56like what they assumed he was doing there.
- 18:59I guess he had stopped and looked at some building that was
- 19:01under construction or something. I don't know the whole story.
- 19:04I'm not trying to say he was a St. or anything, but jumped in
- 19:11the back of their pickup truck, followed him and shot him just
- 19:19because he was running in the wrong neighborhood.
- 19:22And, and I still don't know how to handle that.
- 19:29I still don't know what to do with the grief that comes up in
- 19:36me. Even just retelling that story,
- 19:39you know, the emotions that I felt in that moment just come
- 19:42back of grief and sorrow over the state of our world, the
- 19:51state of our country, the state of race relationships.
- 19:58And, yeah, realized in that season, the privilege that I do
- 20:07have, I can run just about anywhere.
- 20:11Not give it a second thought. Not true for everybody.
- 20:19I, I wrestle a lot with entitlement and privilege.
- 20:24And I think one of the biggest blessings of my life is going
- 20:27back and forth to Mexico growing up, because every time I got,
- 20:32you know, you think like, you go to Mexico and people take
- 20:35mission teams and my own would like take the mission teams
- 20:39down. And I was like, Oh my gosh, I'm
- 20:41never going to take for granted again.
- 20:42You know, all these things. And then, you know, three months
- 20:46later, you're taking for granted all of the things that he said
- 20:50you wouldn't. And so to have that constant
- 20:52refresher growing up to, you know, I think all of all of my
- 20:58friends and all of my brothers and sisters in Christ that were
- 21:02so joyful and had beautiful personal relationships with God.
- 21:09But they were, you know, just in a House of two by fours and a
- 21:13metal roof with a hose over some trash bags in the yard as a
- 21:17shower and all of that stuff. And so I think that definitely
- 21:24was helpful to me. But I think one of those things
- 21:28that like hurts me looking out in the world is in our country,
- 21:34the things people fight for and act as if they are the end of
- 21:40the world and society and that it's the biggest injustice
- 21:44attacking our nation. And it can be both sides of the
- 21:48aisle. There's really no like specific
- 21:51one that I feel like is whatever.
- 21:54And then I look out and when I see starving people all over the
- 22:00world, when I see wars and genocides and bombings and all
- 22:06of these things where it's like man, woman, child is suffering
- 22:14due to the higher powers, whether it be starving to death
- 22:18or scared of being hit by a bomb or shot down for whatever
- 22:24political unrest that might be. And then we're like, well,
- 22:28someone wasn't nice to me and I'm like, OK, and I understand
- 22:35Martin Luther King Junior injustice somewhere is injustice
- 22:39everywhere. And sure.
- 22:40So I think that sadly it's been taken to like the more like my
- 22:49cause is equally as valid or important and worthy of fighting
- 22:53for, no matter how small the injustice is.
- 22:58And the amount of time and attention that gets put into you
- 23:02made me feel sad when we have like all the things I've already
- 23:07listed happening. And it's not that it doesn't
- 23:10deserve time and attention and we shouldn't seek justice and
- 23:13correction and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:15But I think it's the what are we?
- 23:19You know, you can fight for that in your daily life and speak
- 23:22into those who have influence around you against those things.
- 23:26But where's your time and resources and all that kind of
- 23:29stuff towards just the basic, like in our country with
- 23:33freedoms and rights that we have listed out.
- 23:37And as we've talked about denying ourselves the series,
- 23:40it's like, OK, but like, what are actual basic needs?
- 23:46Yeah. Of life not needs that are
- 23:49really like anything that I want and I think everyone should have
- 23:52counts as a need but I think we've almost gotten far away
- 23:56from the caring for the basic needs of those around us and
- 24:01around the world and we've pushed the potential emotional
- 24:06needs first yeah in multiple. Regards.
- 24:09Yeah. And and even if some of those
- 24:11things are valid rights of ours, sometimes we need to lay those
- 24:17down for the sake of those around us, for the sake of the
- 24:22gospel, for the sake of need. You know, just because something
- 24:29is a right, like you said, it doesn't mean it Trump's a need
- 24:35in someone else. 'S life.
- 24:37Yeah. And I'm, I'm always like,
- 24:39inspired by your favorite Francis Chan.
- 24:45He's also my favorite Francis Chan where with his book Crazy
- 24:49Love, which was his biggest seller at one point, he was made
- 24:53aware of the travesties of human trafficking around the world and
- 24:57specifically like child human trafficking.
- 24:59And he had a couple young daughters at the time.
- 25:03And he told his publisher, I want all of my proceeds from my
- 25:08book from here on out to go towards that.
- 25:11And some of his friends and peers when they heard that or
- 25:13like, but what if you have like an emergency in your family and
- 25:17you need the money and like, whatever.
- 25:19And then you don't have it like rainy day fun or whatever.
- 25:23And he was like, what's what's a bigger emergency than children
- 25:30being trafficked right now? And you want me to withhold
- 25:34helping that because of my potential imaginary emergency in
- 25:40the future. And then I'm supposed to believe
- 25:41that God's not going to provide for me at that point in my life
- 25:45that he's going to stop that. And so I think it's reshaping,
- 25:49reprioritizing because no one would have been like, oh, you're
- 25:53a horrible person for making the money off the work that you've
- 25:56made and done. But you know, having more of
- 26:01that Kingdom gospel centered approach and desire of God's
- 26:06will. And that'll look different for
- 26:08each and every one of us. But to at least as we're walking
- 26:11with the Lord and getting closer with him, asking what that could
- 26:15look like and what's on his heart.
- 26:17I think that's something beautiful about our prayer
- 26:19sessions of what's that quote in the top right corner?
- 26:22Do you know by chance or if you could pull it up and read it for
- 26:25us and then we can close out with that?
- 26:28It says our hearts are often unhelpful prayer guides.
- 26:31So we are praying God's word, asking what does it say about
- 26:35God? What does?
- 26:36It say about me. What does it say about the
