Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Enda Brady: UK Correspondent on the calls for Sir Keir Starmer to resign
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now I am denarwed whether to do this, but I'm
- 0:02Speaker 1: about to play you twenty eight seconds of secure Starmer,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and that for a lot of people would probably be
- 0:08Speaker 1: a turn off. However, it's important I do this because
- 0:10Speaker 1: he is literally fighting for his job this morning.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I know I have my doubters, and I know I
- 0:17Speaker 2: need to prove them wrong, and I will. Like every
- 0:20Speaker 2: prime minister, I've learned a lot in the first two
- 0:23Speaker 2: years in the job in terms of the policy challenges
- 0:27Speaker 2: that our country faces. Incremental change won't cut it on growth, defense, Europe, energy.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We need a bigger response that we anticipated in twenty
- 0:41Speaker 2: twenty four.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Fifty five labor INPs now the number according to Sky
- 0:45Speaker 1: that one am gone joining us in the Brady are
- 0:47Speaker 1: UK corresponding in a good morning, good evening.
- 0:49Speaker 3: To you, Good morning to you, Ryan. Great to speak again,
- 0:52Speaker 3: my friend.
- 0:53Speaker 1: How long do you think he's got I think until September.
- 0:57Speaker 3: He survived today, So there's no clear challenger. Nobody has
- 1:01Speaker 3: stuck their head of the parapet and said I'm a
- 1:03Speaker 3: cabinet minister, I will lead this party and this country
- 1:07Speaker 3: better back me and sack Starmer. None of them have
- 1:11Speaker 3: had the guts to do that today. I've literally come
- 1:14Speaker 3: from London from my studio. I had one of Starmer's
- 1:16Speaker 3: friends in the studio with me, a Labor loyalist, and
- 1:19Speaker 3: she said to me on air, that's the kind of
- 1:22Speaker 3: speech I wish he'd given two years ago. So there
- 1:25Speaker 3: is still some support. The party split, and I think
- 1:29Speaker 3: it's split three ways in terms of who comes next
- 1:31Speaker 3: or who they want to come next. But he has
- 1:34Speaker 3: survived day one.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I was watching Lorrain Beavis in Pay for Blackpool Northern Fleetwood.
- 1:39Speaker 1: How sid for our party to rediscover its connection with
- 1:43Speaker 1: working class communities like mine, we need a democratic contest
- 1:46Speaker 1: involving the most talented leaders. A Kebnet appointment without consulting
- 1:51Speaker 1: the party and the movement would risk repeating the same
- 1:53Speaker 1: mistakes already made. Do you agree.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Look, Labor do things very differently. Conservatives love a bit
- 2:01Speaker 3: of regicide. They get rid of a leader when they
- 2:04Speaker 3: were in charge, that they did it every few weeks.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I mean they'd three prime ministers in a year if
- 2:09Speaker 3: you can believe Liz Trusts famously being outlasted by a Lettus.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I think what Labour need to do now is to
- 2:18Speaker 3: coalesce around one serious challenger. The best person for the job,
- 2:23Speaker 3: I believe isn't even a member of Parliament. This is
- 2:25Speaker 3: Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, a very good leader,
- 2:28Speaker 3: a good communicator, previously a Cabinet minister and someone from
- 2:32Speaker 3: the North of England who will get those working class
- 2:34Speaker 3: communities back on side. But for him to get in
- 2:38Speaker 3: he needs to become an MP and then challenge Starmer.
- 2:41Speaker 3: There are other names in the frame. The Health Secretary
- 2:43Speaker 3: web Streeting apparently fancies his chances. So does Angela Rayner,
- 2:46Speaker 3: the former Deputy Prime Minister, but there's an issue over
- 2:49Speaker 3: her tax affairs, so she's waiting to be cleared on that.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So Starmer has time, but he needs to start delivering.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Working people in the UK are struggling, they're angry, and
- 3:01Speaker 3: then you've got Majel Farage telling them that come vote
- 3:04Speaker 3: for me, I'll sort all your problems. That's the conundrum.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And Brady, a UK correspondent, Good to have you on
- 3:09Speaker 1: the show this morning.
