- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to the Daily Quote podcast, designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm a host Anna McGivern for September 25th.
- 0:13Today is National Comic Book Day, a celebration that honors
- 0:17one of North America's most influential art forms.
- 0:20While the exact origins of this holiday are mysteriously
- 0:24shrouded like a superhero's secret identity, comic book
- 0:28enthusiasts have embraced September 25th as the day to
- 0:32celebrate the art, artists, and stories that have captivated
- 0:36readers for generations. Comic books have a fascinating
- 0:41history that traces back to the 1930s, when the first modern
- 0:45American comic book, Famous Funnies, was published in 1933.
- 0:50The Golden Age began in the late 30s with the creation of
- 0:55Superman, and by the mid 40s comic books were actually out
- 1:00selling traditional books. What started as simple
- 1:03entertainment evolved into a sophisticated storytelling
- 1:07medium that spans every genre imaginable.
- 1:12From the colorful adventures of superheroes to the profound
- 1:17narratives of graphic novels like Moss, comic books have
- 1:22proven that sequential art can tackle any subject, from
- 1:26lighthearted humor to the darkest chapters of human
- 1:29history. They've become a true global
- 1:32phenomenon, inspiring countless movies, TV shows, and cultural
- 1:36movements. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:39from a comic book writer, Neil Gaiman, who once said the one
- 1:46thing that you have, that nobody else has is you.
- 1:50Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision.
- 1:56Damon's insights capture something essential about what
- 1:59makes comic book such a powerful medium and what makes National
- 2:03Comic Book Day worth celebrating.
- 2:06Comic books have always been about unique voices telling
- 2:09stories that couldn't be told any other way.
- 2:13Think about the creators who revolutionized the medium.
- 2:16Jack Kirby's cosmic imagination. Will Eisner's innovative
- 2:21storytelling techniques, or Art Spiegelman's use of the medium
- 2:26to tell his father's Holocaust story, and Moss each brought
- 2:31something completely unique to the form.
- 2:34Their own voice, their own vision, their own way of seeing
- 2:38the world. This is what separates truly
- 2:41memorable comic books from the forgettable ones.
- 2:45It's not about having the most spectacular superpowers or the
- 2:49most elaborate artwork. It's about having something
- 2:53unique to say, and finding your own way to say it.
- 2:57The best comic creators understand that their individual
- 3:01perspective is their greatest asset.
- 3:04Gaiman himself exemplifies this. His work in comics like The
- 3:09Sandman brought literary depth in mythological richness to the
- 3:14medium in ways that were uniquely his.
- 3:18He didn't try to copy other creators.
- 3:19He brought his own voice, his own vision, his own story to the
- 3:23page. The beautiful things about comic
- 3:26books is that they remind us that everyone has a story worth
- 3:29telling, and everyone has a unique way of seeing the world
- 3:34that no one else can replicate. So today, think about Gay Men's
- 3:38reminder that you have something nobody else has.
- 3:41Your unique voice, mind, story, and vision.
- 3:46What would change if you approached your day with more
- 3:49confidence in your own unique perspective?
- 3:52Maybe it's sharing an idea at work that's been brewing your
- 3:54mind. Maybe it's starting that
- 3:57creative project you've been putting on because you're
- 3:59worrying that it's not like what others are doing.
- 4:04Maybe it's simply recognizing that your way of seeing and
- 4:07experience in the world has value, even if it's different
- 4:11from everyone else's. Comic books remind us that the
- 4:15most compelling stories often come from the most personal
- 4:18places. You don't need superpowers to
- 4:21have something meaningful to contribute.
- 4:25You just need the courage to share your own voice, your own
- 4:29vision, your own story. That's going to do it.
- 4:35For today, I'm Andrew McGivern. Signing off for now but I'll be
- 4:40back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:47with another daily quote.
