- 0:07Speaker 1: And we're back to the Craig Way Show.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
- 0:13talkbacked feature on the Ihearts radio.
- 0:15Speaker 3: App here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM
- 0:24thirteen under the Zone. Before we get back to hearing
- 0:28from Longhortons head coach Steve Sarkisian, let me let the
- 0:32Houston Texans certainly deserve and merit mentioned as well, very
- 0:37thorough in their road win at New England, beating the
- 0:40Patriots forty one twenty one. And here are the Texans
- 0:44rolling along and I would say one of the best
- 0:47teams in the AFC right.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Now and more impressive Craig, considering all the injuries that
- 0:52are starting to suffer defensively without a couple of cornerbacks
- 0:56in that game against New England, obviously without Nico Collins,
- 1:01who was having one of the best seasons in the NFL,
- 1:03and you're thinking, Okay, maybe this will be a drop
- 1:05off geame for CJ.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Stroud.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Nope, look look like they're gonna score one hundred points
- 1:09in the first quarter. Ended up just hammering New England,
- 1:14I mean Newland defensively. There was a couple we just yikes,
- 1:17moments on defense with the lack of effort some of
- 1:20their players. But if you're Houston Texans fan, I mean,
- 1:23they're a team that it feels like every week they're
- 1:25getting better and better. And some of their wins have
- 1:28been a little dicey. You know, it could have gone
- 1:30either way, but you know, they came up with a victory,
- 1:33and now each week they've gotten three in a row.
- 1:35They're just getting a little bit better and better and
- 1:37now set up for a real fun showdown at Lambeau
- 1:41and Screen Bay on Sunday.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Let's hear some more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian
- 1:45on this Long Horns Monday. It is from the news
- 1:47conference earlier that they heard live here on the Zone.
- 1:52Speaker 1: It was pointed out.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I think it was our friends Center Golden the Austin
- 1:56American State's been pointed out to sark that this is
- 1:59a marquee quarterback match up at dk R on Saturday night.
- 2:03Carson Beck of Georgia, when you were in Texas and
- 2:07he was asked if he remembered being part of a
- 2:09marquee matchup when he played at BYU, And then the
- 2:13second question and there were two questions. The other was
- 2:15about Quinn you were was taking responsibility for his mistakes,
- 2:19how he has done that, and what he does to
- 2:22do that, and whether Sark has to say anything to
- 2:24him about it, and how he gathers himself.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I don't know if I ever had a Marquee matchup.
- 2:29There's probably a lot of other There's probably a lot
- 2:31of other better players than me. I don't know if
- 2:33I was ever the Marquee guy. Yeah, he was a
- 2:36true freshman. Yeah he was a good player.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I think one thing that Quinn and I think any
- 2:43one of our players would kind of say the same thing,
- 2:45like we really believe in accountability, and accountability is taking
- 2:50responsibility for one zone to the actions. And I don't
- 2:55know if you remember, even a couple of weeks ago,
- 2:56Jayden Blue came up to me and said, I can
- 2:58play better. And it's like when you can really be
- 3:01honest and watch the tape or come out of a
- 3:03game and know how you played and say, okay, where
- 3:05is their room to be better and then try to
- 3:08address it.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And I think that's what Quinn's saying.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And it's probably a little easier for a veteran player
- 3:13to acknowledge that than a younger player, but we really
- 3:17try to instill that into our players. Is about let's
- 3:20just take accountability for our actions, whether it's on the
- 3:23field or off the field, and then and then move forward,
- 3:26and how do we get better because of it? And
- 3:27so I just think that's a sign of kind of
- 3:30what we try to instill in the players. And Quinn
- 3:32had a lot of that innately, but I do think
- 3:34our culture has helped that as well.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Okay this Sometimes in news conferences, Sark will be asked
- 3:43questions that involve phrases, and sometimes it's words he has
- 3:52used to describe things in the culture and the program.
- 3:55So then the reporters are interested in finding out in
- 3:58a little better, more in depth to tail what exactly
- 4:01is meant by some of those phrases. For example, the
- 4:05when Sark talks about in the recruiting game being able
- 4:10to line up young men get commitments from young men
- 4:13who are, in Sarks words quote enamored by us and
- 4:19in this day and age of nil and everything else,
- 4:22Sark was asked what goes into getting a potential recruit
- 4:28to be quote unquote enamored by the University of Texas.
- 4:31Speaker 4: I think through a level of consistency. That's the first part,
- 4:35you know, I don't. I don't just touch on it,
- 4:38you know, once a week or you know, once a
- 4:40month or the first, you know.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Team meeting.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I try to consistently talk about those things. I try
- 4:46to force their dialogue on those things. We do a
- 4:48lot of different exercises throughout the summer. On our Culture
- 4:52Wednesday activities. We do an exercise every Friday at our
- 4:55team meeting before we go to the hotel or before
- 4:58we get on the plane. So we do a lot
- 4:59of exercises that tries to promote the team and try
- 5:04to promote acknowledging their teammates, whether guys that they appreciate
- 5:09or guys that they that inspire them. We try to
- 5:12promote you know, you know, gratitude lists and being grateful
- 5:16for the things that we have and not what we
- 5:18don't have. And so, but that lends itself to because
- 5:22I believe in culture, and I don't you know, not
- 5:25everybody does, probably the way that we do. But I
- 5:27do believe culture beats talent. And I said that before
- 5:31when maybe we weren't the most talented teams.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But culture beats talent.
- 5:35Speaker 4: But I've also said that culture and talent combined is
- 5:39really dangerous. And I think that's why we've become a
- 5:42dangerous team is because we've built a culture, but we've.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Assembled talent along the way.
- 5:48Speaker 4: And that's a credit to our players and their their
- 5:51belief in the culture and the character that they came
- 5:55in with to pour into that culture and make it
- 5:58better than it even was before.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Okay, So then the follow up, well, what is the
- 6:01message to the team this week and getting ready for
- 6:05this Georgia team. Does he have any specific different message
- 6:10than what he has on a week by week basis?
- 6:11Speaker 4: The message didn't change at all today and I and again,
- 6:14like I said, I believe in consistency and messaging. You know,
- 6:18when we start conference play, the first thing I talk
- 6:21about this is an SEC championship game. You know, every
- 6:23week we play this this league, we have no divisions,
- 6:27there's a lot of teams, and any blemish on your
- 6:31record could potentially knock you out of that that championship game.
- 6:34And so we think of every game that way, whether
- 6:37it's Mississippi State, Oklahoma now now Georgia. The messaging stays
- 6:43very consistent on a lot of the things that we
- 6:45talk about because I think the players appreciate consistency if
- 6:49they know if they know that I'm consistent with what
- 6:52I'm doing, then and when I'm asking them to be
- 6:55consistent of what they do week in and week out,
- 6:57it's a little easier if I'm embodying the same thing.
- 7:02Speaker 1: The appeal is this is you know, this is always you.
- 7:05Speaker 4: You love those games that if you want to call
- 7:07them the measuring stick or or kind of a barometer
- 7:09for where you at at what juncture of the season
- 7:12against the really good team and a team that has
- 7:16you know, been in national championship games, conference championship games.
- 7:19Is one games at a really high level and a
- 7:21head coach who's who's done it at the highest level.
- 7:25That's that's the fun part, you know. It's like, Okay,
- 7:28let's see if what we do on a regular basis
- 7:30is good enough and that that's what we can find.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Out Next Sark delivered the unfortunate and injury news with
- 7:37regard to Texas.
- 7:40Speaker 4: UH, Derek Is will be out the remainder of the season. UH,
- 7:43he'll have surgery here in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Isaiah,
- 7:49were were I feel better about today than I felt
- 7:53Saturday when he couldn't when he couldn't finish the ball game.
- 7:56So I'm optimistic, but like I said, we'll kind of
- 7:58He'll be day to day. We'll see how looks as
- 8:00we get kind of into Wednesday Thursday. Carson Beck, I
- 8:04know really well. He was committed to US at Alabama
- 8:07and then ultimately decommitted and went to went to Georgia.
- 8:10He's a great young man, military background from his father.
- 8:14They you know, he's a big, strong kid, can make
- 8:19all the throws. You know, he's got a real presence
- 8:21in the pocket, can make all the throws.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And I think they have a scheme that fits him.
- 8:25You know.
- 8:25Speaker 4: They believe in the play action pass, they believe in
- 8:27the double moves. They're gonna take plenty of shots down
- 8:30the field. They utilize the tight end, they utilize the
- 8:33running backs, and so there's nothing from a from a
- 8:36throw game that he really can't do. And he's played
- 8:38enough football now too. It's kind of hard to confuse
- 8:42guys when they've played that much football. And so that's
- 8:46gonna be our challenge, right, how do we disrupt him
- 8:48in the pocket. How can we you know, create a
- 8:50little bit of hesitation in him of of from a
- 8:52from a coverage standpoint, and then we're gonna have to
- 8:55play really well, uh, you know, in tight coverage because
- 8:58he's gonna make these throws and they have elite speed
- 9:01on the perimeter. You know, they're built very similar like us,
- 9:03you know, whether it's you know, Aaron Smith or Levette.
- 9:07I mean, those guys can all go and so now
- 9:09you have to guard them and they have an NFL
- 9:12quarterback throwing.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It to them.
- 9:13Speaker 3: All right. Some thoughts on Carson Beck to Georgia quarterback,
- 9:16as well as Derek Williams being out for the rest
- 9:18of the season with his injury. Although they're hopeful that
- 9:21Isaiah Bond might be available this week, I have a
- 9:25feeling he'll wind up questionable. This is questionable in the
- 9:27injury report on Wednesday. We'll hear more from the Loghorn's
- 9:30head coach, Steve Sarkisian coming up when we continue on
- 9:33Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
