- 0:01When milarepa approached marpa requesting Liberation in one
- 0:06lifetime, he was haunted by the misdeeds.
- 0:10He recognized in his own recent past and the harm, he had caused
- 0:15many people, he had Justified the harm based on the misdeeds
- 0:20of those individuals towards his family.
- 0:23But eventually he understood that his own fate was on the
- 0:27line instead of granting him the teachings marpa set him to work
- 0:33with hard physical labor for an extended period of time.
- 0:38What thoughts were going through Miller up his mind as he carried
- 0:42out the seemingly. Meaningless back-breaking work.
- 0:47He eventually broke down with a fit of Despair and felt like
- 0:51there was no way he can go on any longer and it was only after
- 0:56that occurred that the teachings were granted to him.
- 1:01This illustrates just one of the various potential causes for an
- 1:06apparently empty period for the spiritual Seeker.
- 1:12When the youth, whose tale was told in the upanishads was given
- 1:16several cattle and told by the teacher to take them into the
- 1:20forest and create a massive herd of cattle in order to get the
- 1:24teachings. You did not despair despite an
- 1:28obviously long period of effort and physical privation.
- 1:33And the need to overcome the difficulties of living in the
- 1:36forest caring for and raising a large herd of of cattle and
- 1:42learning how to deal with all the external circumstances that
- 1:45could have sidetracked his effort.
- 1:48Instead of meditation, he had to herd cows for years.
- 1:55He clearly reached out for the teacher initially due to some
- 1:59intense inward calling, which Drew him away from family
- 2:03friends and the life in society. While most speakers do not have
- 2:10such a pressure or such an intense background, that
- 2:14motivates them to take up spiritual practice, they
- 2:17nevertheless undergo periods of time where nothing is seemingly
- 2:22taking place. And if this occurs after a
- 2:25particularly fruitful time of opening and growth of
- 2:29Consciousness, they feel the lack very acutely.
- 2:35Spiritual Seekers who are various experiences all find
- 2:38that at some point. The headline experience,
- 2:41recedes, and they are left with dealing with the difficulties
- 2:46and obstacles of their nature or the pressures placed by the
- 2:50outer world with which they have to interact.
- 2:55There are always significant reasons why these alternations
- 2:58take place and SRI aurobindo describes several of them and
- 3:04advises on the proper attitude to work ones.
- 3:06Way through these difficult periods of time SRI aurobindo
- 3:12observes, quote, the reason why there are these alternations of
- 3:16which you complain is that the nature of the Consciousness is
- 3:20like that. After a spell of wakefulness it
- 3:25feels the need of a little sleep very often in the beginning.
- 3:29The wakings our brief the sleeps long afterwards, it becomes more
- 3:34equal and later on the Sleep periods are shorter and shorter.
- 3:40Another cause of these alternations when one is
- 3:43receiving is the Nature's need of closing up to a simile.
- 3:48It can take perhaps a great deal, but while the experience
- 3:53is going on, it cannot absorb properly.
- 3:55What it brings so it closes down for a simulation.
- 4:01A third cause comes in the period of transformation.
- 4:05One part of the nature changes and one feels for a time as if
- 4:09there had been a complete and permanent change but one is
- 4:13disappointed to find it cease and a period of baroness or
- 4:18lowered Consciousness follow this is because another part of
- 4:23the Consciousness comes up for Change and a period of
- 4:27preparation and veiled working follows which seems to be one of
- 4:32unon latent or Worse. These things alarm disappoint or
- 4:37perplex. The eagerness and impatience of
- 4:41the Sadiq, but if one takes them quietly and knows how to use
- 4:46them, or adopt, the right attitude, one can make these
- 4:51unenlightened periods. Also, a part of the conscious
- 4:56sadhna. And quote, reference SRI
- 5:00aurobindo, and the mother growing within the psychology of
- 5:04inner development. Chapter 6 growth of
- 5:07Consciousness difficulties and pitfalls page 121
