- speaker-0: It comes by modeling and if you have an authentic, open, growing relationship with the Lord that you talk about and that you ⁓ practice, they're gonna catch that. speaker-1: Mary, welcome back to the podcast. I'm so glad to continue our conversation. speaker-0: I'm glad to be back and happy to talk about this is a really great subject and ⁓ one I think that's close to all of our hearts. speaker-1: ⁓ my goodness. Yeah, because I mean, like, we can talk all day about our mess. We don't want our mess intersecting with our kids. So yes. So I love this. Cause I think that has been one of the most ⁓ shocking parts of parenting, I think, for me has been like, I just thought I'm gonna do everything right and nothing will touch my child. Like I can protect them from all things crazy happening in the world. And I don't think that's the full reason why we chose to homeschool. But we view homeschooling as a as a discipleship method. But I know a lot of families out there do and yet they're so shocked because, you know, hey, hey, our kids still get hurt and things still happen. And, you know, sometimes because we said things in a way that wasn't the most loving way to do it. ⁓ so I want to turn the tables a little bit and kind of from where we left last week to coming into this week. So in our last conversation, we talked about how our own story can affect the way we parent. But I'd love to turn the corner now and talk about our kids because in a broken world, what does it look like to raise kids who are emotionally healthy and resilient and rooted in Christ? So can you give us kind of an example of what that could look like to be raising our kids to have this healthy rooted relationship with the Lord? speaker-0: It it comes by modeling. And so they will imitate what they see. And if you have an authentic, open, growing relationship with the Lord that you talk about and that you ⁓ practice, they are gonna catch that. I think one of the things that was interesting for us, we did the opposite of homeschooling. We did homeschool for a little while, but we we moved to France and we were missionaries in the south of France for a couple of years with our kids, our young, young kids. And because homeschooling's not really recognized there and they send you home if you do, our kids went into French schools and it was really hard. It was super hard. But what I found from that particular time was that they had to in that environment own their relationship with Jesus for themselves. So much so that when we went back to the States and some of them ⁓ ended up being in youth groups when we got back here, they were confused. By youth group, because in France, you either are a Christ follower or you're not. There's no pretending. And we moved to the South ⁓ in Texas. And so there was all this pretending going on. And so I guess what I'm trying to say is having reality and authenticity both modeled as a parent and applauded as a parent, and helping your kids find Jesus in the midst of whatever thing that they're in. will be so important for them. And you'll begin to see them discerning like just like we saw our kids discerning, like, well that's not they're saying things that sound right, but their actions are not following what they're saying. And I found that to be fascinating that my kids had pretty good hypocrisy meters. speaker-2: This episode of Homeschool Insights is brought to you by Liberty HealthShare.
