- 0:57- Hello. This is Ariana Portallatin with the Becker's
- 1:00- Dental and DUSA Ruby podcast. I'm thrilled to
- 1:02- be joined today by doctor Krista Kappas of
- 1:04- Fitch Mountain Dental in California. Doctor Kappas, thank
- 1:07- you so much for being here today. It's
- 1:08- good to have you on our podcast again.
- 1:10- Thanks for having me.
- 1:12- Great.
- 1:12- To start us off, for our listeners, can
- 1:14- you introduce yourself and tell us a little
- 1:16- bit about your background?
- 1:18- Yeah. My name is Krista Kappas.
- 1:20- I am a dental practice owner in Healdsburg,
- 1:23- California, so Northern California.
- 1:26- I went to the University of Michigan School
- 1:28- of Dentistry,
- 1:29- graduated in 2014. So I've been out for
- 1:31- about twelve years now.
- 1:33- Awesome. Thank you so much.
- 1:35- First question for you here. What are some
- 1:37- of the biggest issues that you're following in
- 1:39- the industry this year?
- 1:41- Gosh. That's that's a loaded question.
- 1:46- So many issues. So I think we're finding,
- 1:49- a lot of pushback from dental insurances.
- 1:51- I mean, I think
- 1:53- most anybody you ask is probably gonna give
- 1:55- you the same line of of the general
- 1:58- issues where we have staffing issues. We have
- 2:00- staffing education issues.
- 2:03- We have,
- 2:04- fee increases in general,
- 2:07- cost increases.
- 2:08- I'd say our our dental supplies have gone
- 2:11- up probably 5%
- 2:13- just this year alone.
- 2:14- You know, building cost, maintenance, everything. I mean,
- 2:17- I think, you know, the world in general,
- 2:19- everything's just costing more.
- 2:21- And dental insurances, of course, are paying less
- 2:24- and reimbursing less. So, you know, that's that's
- 2:26- the joy as well.
- 2:28- Yeah. I'd love to hear more about that
- 2:31- topic. I know this is pretty much the
- 2:33- same thing that so many other practices are
- 2:35- dealing with across the country. How are you
- 2:38- approaching this issue? How are you going about
- 2:41- making sure that your practice is still financially
- 2:44- stable?
- 2:45- Yeah. I think,
- 2:47- one thing that I've really
- 2:49- got I've had to dive in a little
- 2:51- bit more than I I had in the
- 2:53- past. I think when,
- 2:55- business is going great, money is just flowing
- 2:57- in, you just kinda cruise, and,
- 3:00- sometimes you don't notice,
- 3:02- things that you might be missing out on.
- 3:04- So in the last couple of months, we've
- 3:06- been having some AR issues and had to
- 3:08- dive in. And so I I've been actually
- 3:10- looking more than I've ever looked at insurance
- 3:13- denials, insurance claims submissions, and things like that.
- 3:16- And it's it's been,
- 3:18- really interesting to see
- 3:21- how many
- 3:23- little nitpicky things are going on with with
- 3:26- insurances. So I found,
- 3:27- a couple of examples recently that I just
- 3:30- was not aware of. You know, you hear
- 3:31- things like missing tooth clauses and situations like
- 3:34- that. But,
- 3:35- alternative,
- 3:37- benefits available,
- 3:39- seems to be a more recent one. So,
- 3:41- you know, if a patient has dental implant
- 3:43- coverage,
- 3:45- they
- 3:46- might not actually have the dental implant coverage
- 3:49- if the insurance company thinks that they should
- 3:51- have a partial denture instead,
- 3:53- which seems to be, you know, entirely up
- 3:55- to the
- 3:56- insurance company to decide that or not.
- 3:59- I've actually started to recently use Claude
- 4:03- AI,
- 4:04- to help us with our co pays.
- 4:06- So I I think there's so many little
- 4:09- weaselly
- 4:10- things in these benefit breakdowns that are just
- 4:13- really easy to miss when you're putting that
- 4:15- together.
- 4:16- And that's been super helpful because it can
- 4:19- it can point those out to us, a
- 4:21- lot quicker than, you know, having somebody read
- 4:23- through their,
- 4:25- all of their
- 4:26- potential benefits on there.
- 4:29- And, also, I mean, cost in general. I
- 4:31- mean, I think one of the easy ones
- 4:33- is,
- 4:35- your your dental supply costs.
- 4:37- I think, traditionally,
- 4:39- you always had your
- 4:41- we still do. We have our Henry Schein
- 4:42- rep and our Patterson rep, and we work
- 4:44- with them to some extent. But there's so
- 4:45- many other dental supply companies out there, and
- 4:47- I think some really cool
- 4:49- marketplaces
- 4:50- available,
- 4:51- like, NET 32 is one,
- 4:54- where it kinda just scours the Internet for
- 4:57- all the dental products, and you can compare
- 4:59- costs a little bit easier. So it's it's
- 5:01- not as simple. It takes a little bit
- 5:03- more hands on approach to search and search
- 5:05- a couple of different marketplaces, but,
- 5:08- I think that is one area where you
- 5:10- can cut some costs.
- 5:13- That's great. Thank you so much for, sharing
- 5:15- that insight there. Next question for you here.
- 5:17- What are you most excited about when it
- 5:18- comes to dentistry right now, and is there
- 5:20- anything that's making you nervous?
- 5:23- Most excited for dentistry. I think AI is
- 5:26- just huge right now, and I think it's
- 5:28- gonna help us out so much. Right now,
- 5:31- we have Eaglesoft, which,
- 5:33- I just feel like it's such an outdated
- 5:35- system. And I know, similarly with Dentrix,
- 5:39- they're no longer supporting Dentrix and moving to
- 5:41- a new system. But I think
- 5:43- as AI grows and gets more intelligent, I
- 5:45- have a feeling we're gonna have a,
- 5:48- just
- 5:49- a more cohesive dental software that ideally
- 5:52- will merge better with our insurances,
- 5:55- be able to better do co pays,
- 5:57- better,
- 5:58- insurance verification, just more connected in general.
- 6:02- Right now, we have
- 6:03- I mean, we we work with,
- 6:05- Pearl,
- 6:06- which is,
- 6:08- imaging software. So I think that's been really
- 6:10- helpful for our hygienists and our dental assistants
- 6:13- and just patient education and pointing out areas
- 6:15- where there's decay, potential decay,
- 6:17- but it doesn't integrate to our current software.
- 6:19- So I think, you know, as we start
- 6:21- to see more of this, AI in the
- 6:23- dental world, I think ideally, we'll get some
- 6:26- sort of, you know,
- 6:28- cloud based software that can integrate these all
- 6:30- a little bit better versus having, you know,
- 6:32- your 10 separate applications
- 6:35- you have to open up.
- 6:37- Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:38- It brings up a an interesting question that
- 6:40- I haven't discussed with anyone else before, but
- 6:42- I'd love to know. This might have a
- 6:44- a long answer to it, but would love
- 6:46- to get into it further. Sure. Yeah.
- 6:49- You mentioned, you know, what you would like
- 6:50- to see. Is there, like, a,
- 6:53- wish list that you have,
- 6:56- for AI beyond that? Just stuff that you
- 6:58- would like to see it
- 7:00- do and help you out with on the
- 7:01- dental side?
- 7:03- Yeah. I think there's there's so much out
- 7:06- there, but nothing that's really integrated together.
- 7:10- So, I mean, I think, you know, anything
- 7:11- I'm saying I haven't come up with. It's
- 7:13- it's out there. It exists. It's just, you
- 7:15- know, you have to have a company for
- 7:16- this, a company for that. And I think
- 7:18- if there was,
- 7:19- an integrated software that kind of combine that
- 7:21- all
- 7:22- of alright. We've got our our note taking
- 7:26- AI. It's we have our
- 7:28- Alexa
- 7:29- sort of thing in every room where you're
- 7:31- doing your patient x x, explanations. And at
- 7:34- the end of the appointment, it summarizes your
- 7:36- notes. It's all put in there. You can
- 7:38- edit them how you see fit, but it's
- 7:40- everything we talked about for the most part.
- 7:42- I think integrating your your dental
- 7:45- imaging software,
- 7:46- integrating
- 7:47- our insurance verification
- 7:49- software,
- 7:50- and having better,
- 7:53- ways to
- 7:54- access,
- 7:56- your insurance portals.
- 7:58- And right now, we have, you know, about
- 8:00- 9,000 different insurance portals, and
- 8:03- everyone's got a different different password and different
- 8:06- ways to get into it. So I think
- 8:07- having, you know, a better integrated system. Right
- 8:09- now, we've got the CAQH
- 8:12- for your,
- 8:13- just updating your information for all the insurances.
- 8:15- And I think if
- 8:16- we had something like that for dental insurances
- 8:19- in general, just some sort of cohesive dashboard.
- 8:22- But it's just I I think
- 8:25- there's so many different
- 8:27- little and
- 8:29- and I'm sure people are are,
- 8:31- better at this than me and, have already
- 8:34- kind of mastered some of this. But, I
- 8:35- mean, to to submit our insurance, we have
- 8:38- a company, remote light, that sends it to
- 8:40- Vine, that sends it to the insurance. And
- 8:42- I think just having one cohesive unit to
- 8:44- do that, we don't have 10 different companies
- 8:47- that we've gotta make sure we're updating and
- 8:49- everything is working correctly to make sure we
- 8:51- get paid would be ideal.
- 8:54- Yeah. Yeah. Definitely.
- 8:56- Was there anything that makes you nervous as
- 8:57- well?
- 8:58- Yeah.
- 9:00- I mean, I think AI in general. I
- 9:02- mean, how how much do we hear about
- 9:03- how it's using all of our water, how
- 9:05- it's using you know, it's gonna it's gonna
- 9:07- outsmart us and take over us.
- 9:10- I mean, sure. I think that's there's definitely
- 9:14- some fear involved
- 9:15- in that.
- 9:17- But in general, I think,
- 9:19- AI is gonna help us in what we're
- 9:22- doing. I think it's gonna probably cut back
- 9:24- on,
- 9:26- certain,
- 9:29- jobs that we have. So, I mean, that
- 9:31- could be a workforce issue in the future
- 9:33- for sure. You know, if there's certain things
- 9:35- like, alright. We don't need as many billing
- 9:37- specialists anymore because we've got AI that's taking
- 9:39- over that.
- 9:41- Maybe in the future, our phone services get
- 9:43- better where we only need one person upfront
- 9:46- answering the phone because AI is handling a
- 9:47- lot of the scheduling and,
- 9:50- simple questions. So I think from a workforce
- 9:52- standpoint, that could be an issue. But generally
- 9:56- speaking, I'd say not not too fearful.
- 9:59- Last question for you here, what will the
- 10:01- most effective healthcare leaders need to be successful
- 10:04- in the next two to three years?
- 10:06- I think like you need to be watching
- 10:09- out and just be looking at every little
- 10:11- moving part in dental.
- 10:13- It's we're not at a time right now
- 10:15- where you can just cruise and be comfortable.
- 10:17- I think it's a time where a lot
- 10:19- of stuff is shifting
- 10:20- for the good and the bad. And so
- 10:22- I think just being really aware of all
- 10:24- the moving parts in your dental office and
- 10:26- really focusing in on on everything and, you
- 10:29- know, ideally, we'll get to a point where
- 10:31- we don't have to do that forever, but
- 10:33- I just think with all the changing, shifting
- 10:36- times, and
- 10:37- economy kind of in an unstable position,
- 10:40- you just really have to be looking at
- 10:43- every aspect of your business and not just
- 10:45- focusing in on the dentistry right now.
- 10:47- Okay.
- 10:48- Well, that is all I have for you
- 10:49- today, Doctor. Capas. Thank you so much for
- 10:51- joining, us today. It's always a pleasure speaking
- 10:53- with you. So great to have you on
- 10:55- the podcast again and looking forward to connecting
- 10:57- with you again in the future. Yeah. Awesome.
- 10:59- Well, thank you.
