- 2:24Hello guys, sitting the her laugh.
- 2:27Is there any G is the Rancher? Fantastic McAllister gang.
- 2:32We're back with another exciting episode for you here.
- 2:36Today on the Pod. It's a nice warm, lovely
- 2:42February day sitting here in the early afternoon.
- 2:46So we've got places to to be and people to see later on.
- 2:50Got shit to do and people to fuck.
- 2:51Just kidding. Sorry, I didn't say she did but
- 2:58you guys know Fanny is single. But today, our very special
- 3:04guests, you know, the first time I saw this guy, he totally blew
- 3:08my mind over a decade ago. He was doing so many turntable
- 3:12tricks that I had only seen on the internet up to that point
- 3:15and see them in front of my eyes live.
- 3:18And friend was like, wow, this I is the best DJ in town and a
- 3:24decade later. He's still sitting there
- 3:27everybody. Welcome, the great, the
- 3:29powerful, the one and only moustached Tenderoni.
- 3:32James, DJ carbon. Whoo, that's key.
- 3:35What is good? Wow.
- 3:39Oh man, he's a true fan as you can tell, I don't know if is the
- 3:44rum or that. Thank you.
- 3:49Thank you very much for that. I'm impressed how you doing
- 3:51today? I'm doing all right, considering
- 3:53the lack of sleep and all that but no man feeling good, glad to
- 3:56be here. Gorgeous day in February.
- 3:58I didn't expect sixties when I woke up and stepped outside.
- 4:00Yeah, I'll take it. Yeah.
- 4:03Oh, yeah. And you got, you got a couple of
- 4:05other things to do tonight to. Right.
- 4:07Yeah. Right.
- 4:08After this, I will be over at Doma out on the east side, I'll
- 4:11be chilling in their Lounge. Just kicking the tunes off on
- 4:14the Saturday. Normally, I'm over there on
- 4:16Thursdays, but they need some coverage.
- 4:18So I'm going to step in to fill Bill.
- 4:20So nice. Nice.
- 4:22Well we're super excited that you squeeze the sitting because
- 4:26this is awesome. We haven't had a DJ other than
- 4:30Dusty and Mark on. So we haven't had one in a
- 4:33really long time, so it's really good to be at what I like really
- 4:36talk through that your career, all the things that you started
- 4:39off doing. But first, first things first,
- 4:43we want to know the story about the mustache because we know
- 4:47that people will be like, oh yeah, the deejay with the Sash,
- 4:51the best marketing and branding, I could ever do.
- 4:53And what type of hair product? Did you use a mustache product,
- 4:57you use for that Clubman mustache wax?
- 5:00And if it's a really hot day and that's the wax is going to drip
- 5:03a little touch it. Elmer's Glue, locks it in what
- 5:06Elmer's glue stick. Literally just yeah, like glue
- 5:09glue, like a glue stick. Like what do you do?
- 5:12If it's too hot, I learned that trick because once I was
- 5:15traveling and the wax that I use, it comes in like it's
- 5:17almost like a toothpaste, kind of container.
- 5:20It's aluminum and it busted in my luggage and I'm like, what do
- 5:22I what? Yeah, so I tried the one of the
- 5:26hair gels and it was kind of good, but it was really tight.
- 5:28And someone said, oh yeah, right.
- 5:29Elmer's, like, some dude that said, like, I use it when I'm in
- 5:32like Vegas with the heat because it holds up, I was like, I'll
- 5:35try it. I'm like, oh dude, this works
- 5:36like a chance. So yeah, yeah.
- 5:38So the original story of the mustache was so mean my friends
- 5:44always did no-shave. November.
- 5:45Uh-huh. So we would all clean shape to
- 5:47start the month. I born and raised New Yorker
- 5:49after moving here. I moved out all over the map so
- 5:51as one of the things we would all get together and kind of do
- 5:53online just as a way to keep up. Yeah.
- 5:56And so we did it. I grew out my mustache.
- 5:58And then we all had to shave and style for our final photos,
- 6:02fundraising we were doing and it was just a way for us to all to
- 6:05connect and talk smack. So, I shaved.
- 6:08And I've had like, 80 busiest little baby Curl.
- 6:10Yeah. And I ended up raising the most
- 6:13money off of the final photo. They were like, dude.
- 6:15Are you kidding me? Yeah, well, right.
- 6:17Is, that was going on. A buddy of mine was getting
- 6:19married. Good friend, Justin.
- 6:21He was getting married. His fiancee says, can you keep
- 6:23that for the wedding? She was obsessed with like the
- 6:25mustache. Okay.
- 6:28Yeah, I wasn't. This was going to go away, but
- 6:30ya know if you want that for your wedding but that'll be my
- 6:32wedding gift cause I was DJ in the wedding.
- 6:34Yeah. So it's a sweet or keep letting
- 6:36it grows a little bit longer, a little bit more of a curl.
- 6:38I mean there's only like a month or so later.
- 6:40Yeah. And then right after that I was
- 6:43in a DJ about hmm and I hadn't shaved yet and I was just kind
- 6:48of just being lazy about it and in The battle.
- 6:50One of the other DJ's literally slaps on a fake mustache.
- 6:54Oh sure. Yeah.
- 6:55I'm DJ carbon to make fun of me. I'm like, yeah.
- 6:59Oh yeah. Had this only three months and
- 7:01this is how you're identifying me for a bat.
- 7:03Like yeah. So at that point, I'm like,
- 7:05dude, this has legs and and I got a kick out of it because
- 7:08everyone everywhere I went like you get those looks and to this
- 7:11day I still do and I'm kind of don't even see him half the time
- 7:13anymore. But so I just rolled with it.
- 7:16And then shortly after that I was in, I was on TV for Or doing
- 7:20the promo, and everyone saw the mustache, and how we got on the
- 7:24news. It was like 6:00 in the morning
- 7:26on a Sunday. Yeah, my eyes were bloodshot.
- 7:30I was struggling, but they wanted me to do some live DJ and
- 7:32on the morning show. So we get on there and I'm on
- 7:35there with my mustache. Everyone from my past 20 years
- 7:40in Wichita, dad seems like what like my old high school teachers
- 7:44when I first moved here and stuff and I was like they all
- 7:46saw it and then it just became a thing and then it's become the
- 7:49best. Marketing.
- 7:50Like, DJ carbon, who guy with the mustache?
- 7:52Oh yeah. Yes, he's everywhere.
- 7:55So, yeah, so yeah, it just kind of stuck with it.
- 7:58I'm like now, like even during covid I had to wear masks and I
- 8:01could see people like, is it him?
- 8:03I can't tell because I can't see the mustache.
- 8:04Yeah. So I literally, like, all my
- 8:06masks had mustaches on them. Yeah, we get Mario Brothers,
- 8:09mask, there's a something to keep the brand on point and I'm
- 8:13like, I will shave when I need to go in witness protection, but
- 8:15until then, I'm rocking it. That is how long have you had
- 8:19the mustache? OSHA.
- 8:20Is that the original? Yes, that's that's what has me
- 8:23on the news. That's so.
- 8:24Oh my God. Yes.
- 8:26And like the curl is not easy, I mean the curl is there well, but
- 8:29this girl is way better. This was straight from the club,
- 8:31so I didn't mean that was before.
- 8:35It's like the 6:00 news or the seven and we were there like 5
- 8:39a.m. Oh, my gosh.
- 8:42Were you still like three Red Bulls in the parking lot?
- 8:46But like during the whole interview I was sweat.
- 8:48Everyone's like, why are you Swaying.
- 8:50I'm like I didn't know. I was swaying.
- 8:54I love that you say that. Because does he does that every
- 8:56single time I'm always make fun of him.
- 8:57He's like as soon as Dusty is like happier, every time we're
- 9:01eating or just hanging out as soon as he started swaying, you
- 9:03know, he's having a good time, I was out back Leigh's, it says,
- 9:08that's how old he is. He's like, it's because my back.
- 9:15So how long did it get you to or did it take you to get it into
- 9:20that crow caws like that last year or two?
- 9:24I've had it at this link for like eight, seven, eight years
- 9:26now. I've been a trim it up.
- 9:28Yeah. All the time.
- 9:29So you go to someone like a bar. Okay.
- 9:32Yeah. I don't trust anyone.
- 9:34Yeah, well yeah, that's true. Brad man.
- 9:35I've invested too much time. Yeah.
- 9:37Well first, a cheaper just that I don't have anything else to do
- 9:40in the morning. So this is what I'm this is my
- 9:42routine. No, I don't got to get it up,
- 9:44keep the hair. How do you start like when you
- 9:46do you come when you wash it? And so yeah, comb it out on
- 9:49normally. I'll rip wash everything out the
- 9:51night before. So wake up in the morning.
- 9:53Give it a quick rinse. If I'm jumping in the shower and
- 9:55then basically wax. Just basically, I'll take a comb
- 9:59through it real quick wax on the fingers to warm it up a little
- 10:02bit, put the wax through, give it a little twist.
- 10:04And then basically, with the wax, just put it right here on
- 10:07the upside of my cheeks. So the wax will kind of Tuck
- 10:10right there and stick. Yeah.
- 10:12Then just let it dry out for like Like a minute and then just
- 10:14pull it off right away with that little residue and then locked
- 10:18in place, love it. Can you see it?
- 10:20Like when you're like like, you know how your yeah, you can see.
- 10:22Like right here? Yep.
- 10:26Anyways, love the mustache. Yes.
- 10:28I'm a huge fan, it's a gum take. If anybody tell you, you pay.
- 10:31You like a million dollars to shave it.
- 10:33Don't do it for a million dollars.
- 10:36You can do that. What would be a lot with a
- 10:38million dollars though? You really can't?
- 10:42Yeah. A million is not that much
- 10:44nowadays, it's not what it used to be.
- 10:47I mean, I mean, but like for a lot of people who like can't
- 10:50afford a lot of things, like a million dollars is a million,
- 10:53that's a good, that's a good amount but like people back yeah
- 10:57it'll grow back. What if we gave you 500 dollars?
- 11:04Would you do it for free? Okay.
- 11:06Okay what if it was 5,000? No.
- 11:09Oh okay okay? What about 75,000?
- 11:13Don't think so. Whoa.
- 11:15Okay. So pretty high.
- 11:16Yeah, you'd have to be pretty high.
- 11:17I mean, yeah, it's part of the brand.
- 11:19And I mean, with where I'm at now, I'm like, yeah, you know,
- 11:22you like it have to be several years salary, to Fair, take away
- 11:27from that. Like, I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna
- 11:29stick with it. Yeah.
- 11:31Yeah. Because yours already several
- 11:32years in with it. Yeah, I mean, I've been DJing in
- 11:37Wichita for 20, this makes 22 years.
- 11:41I've been in nightclubs and bars.
- 11:43Yeah, yeah. Oh yeah, speaking of yeah, as we
- 11:46were talking earlier and you're trying to remember where we had
- 11:50kind of like first met and where I saw the you doing all the
- 11:53scratching and beat juggling and everything.
- 11:55It was back at the Lizard Lounge for the horizons.
- 12:00Yep, drum bass and I was good friends with Adam, he's like you
- 12:04guys got to come out tonight and check out DJ carbon man, he's
- 12:08really good like all right I remember that night very very
- 12:12well yeah. That's the old crew.
- 12:14Yeah, because I had kind of departed from that seat, at that
- 12:16point. Because, yeah, we used to run
- 12:19that was Jungle. Recon was the crew.
- 12:20That was me, Chad, CJ, crave one, Chrissy as Gaia.
- 12:27And then we had Justin this firewall.
- 12:29So it was the four of us and we started a record label.
- 12:33Did the whole nine. We actually, yeah, we actually
- 12:36pressed vinyl. Why shipped I was shipping them
- 12:38out of my house. We shipped more records overseas
- 12:41than I did in the states. For the records we were
- 12:43releasing was All right, Phoebe Raga mashup.
- 12:46They go. They go for good money on eBay.
- 12:48These days. It's kind of crazy.
- 12:49I'm like, I still got like 20, I got the original acetate.
- 12:51Still has the original dubplates heck.
- 12:53Yeah. But yeah man.
- 12:55Yeah Sunday. They invited me out and yeah,
- 12:58that was years later because we had a big not a big falling out
- 13:01but I'm like you go that way. I'm gonna go over here and kind
- 13:03of hit the reset button and then it was all water under the
- 13:06bridge. And yeah so we became good
- 13:08friends once again still to this day with all of them even though
- 13:11they've split. But but yeah, man, love those.
- 13:13And yeah, that might of the Lizard Lounge.
- 13:15I remember when they had that residency, what was it?
- 13:17I forget what they call to. I want to say is like Horizon to
- 13:20Horizon, that's what it was. Yeah, because actually Mark
- 13:24engine trouble is going to throw something similar in March.
- 13:28Okay down that barcode on Pawnee.
- 13:31Yeah, yeah, so he like invited me.
- 13:34Marco. Christina himself Ozzy, and
- 13:38maybe someone else to come to United jungle.
- 13:42Yeah. All time.
- 13:43Say. Let me get vinyl out for a
- 13:46change. So since your DJ, yes.
- 13:50What type of music do you like? To DJ or to listen to basically,
- 13:57how do I say this? Like, you know what made you
- 13:59become a DJ? So I was before, I DJ I was a
- 14:03huge hip-hop head. I like fell in love with hip-hop
- 14:06because it was so accessible for a rapper.
- 14:09One, two, three now Rock him. Hmm.
- 14:13Okay. I mean like him not.
- 14:15I mean, what? Kim was revolutionary.
- 14:17Nas is probably my favorite Lyricist Tribe Called Quest is
- 14:21my favorite Act of all time, cute.
- 14:24I mean, I don't think he's the best rapper but the content but
- 14:27it was when I first heard it I mean and to this day I could
- 14:30listen to that all day. Long Tribe Called Quest my
- 14:32number one of hip-hop all time frames down.
- 14:35But no musically. I mean, I'm all over the map.
- 14:36I mean I grew up before I was well, back when I first linked
- 14:39up with that, that crew I wasn't DJ carbon.
- 14:42I was MC carbon back then I would say what made you?
- 14:45Ok, duh, MCD day. Okay, I'm still going to ask it,
- 14:50it's an ignorant question. What's the difference between
- 14:53him soon? And DJ.
- 14:54Well, no MC. I was just a rapper.
- 14:55I was just is the host these days, but no MC.
- 15:00Yeah, but I took it as MC was the rat.
- 15:03MC stood for move, the crowd old rock him verse and all that, but
- 15:06no, I was like a battle rapper. I used to Freestyle if we were
- 15:10to play something right now. Could you do it?
- 15:13Yeah you really could? Yeah.
- 15:15Okay. That's what we're coming back.
- 15:16That's what we're going to copy. Good.
- 15:17So it's okay, that's where we're going to come back with.
- 15:19This is what happens when I'm doing shows these days like with
- 15:21like Rudy and some of the guys they'll yeah.
- 15:23Get carbon more drinks because we want him to Freestyle before
- 15:25the nights over. I have to hear from you another
- 15:30shot but I've heard him do it before.
- 15:33What it was. I think.
- 15:35I'm pretty sure it was that night at The Horizon when I
- 15:37first saw him. Yeah.
- 15:40Wow, that's good. This guy's great, it's hard to
- 15:43wrap. I try wrapping and I'm like,
- 15:45yeah, that's not for me. That's what kind of led to my
- 15:50first gigs. That was, I got into it.
- 15:52I'm some MC battles in town, eight miles.
- 15:58I was the white kid in the club that I remember.
- 16:02They had them pressed, Ash. Yeah, the first one was at
- 16:06Indigo and then they didn't like it there, like, this is not our
- 16:10crowd, you know, unless you know, God's that we got.
- 16:12Booted out of there and then they ended up doing them at
- 16:15Harry and all he's very knowledgeable.
- 16:18What was that? Harry and Oliver.
- 16:21I get it. So that's like down the street
- 16:27from that place like went out because they asked me if I would
- 16:32DJ for him. I'm like okay I can do that.
- 16:34I was DJing for I'm like yo y'all come check me out and I
- 16:36was hadn't been here that long so I didn't know the town that
- 16:39well and it's that they're like oh no we ain't going there.
- 16:41I'm like what do you mean? Then showed up I'm like oh like
- 16:45there's some shit that went on there.
- 16:47Yeah. But I was like, I'm going to
- 16:49host these battles and I'm going to talk my shit because I was
- 16:52like, he's ghost kid and everyone's listen to downside
- 16:54beaten. Like, you don't like my Beats.
- 16:55Fuck, you battle me. I remember the last night, there
- 17:02was a dude, crush crush passed away, but the last night, he was
- 17:06the winner, he was winning all the battles.
- 17:08Like I want you to come on. Watch.
- 17:09So I'm like all right. Fine and me and him went
- 17:11head-to-head. Ed and I crushed him like he
- 17:15took his soul from animosity. I don't know if you don't know
- 17:21him but he was there. He was just like dude you could
- 17:23hear a pin drop like every because the whole crowbar was
- 17:26with his cheerleader. So then they were just like,
- 17:29whoa. Oh man.
- 17:39Hey, so you know, we're kind of jumping around a little bit Lat.
- 17:42Yeah. Which I haven't even answered.
- 17:43What music I liked. I know I know which is great.
- 17:46So, how about how about something to kind of set us up a
- 17:49little bit, right? Like, people know you around
- 17:52you're the, you're the dj with the mustache, your DJ carbon,
- 17:56but like, kind of set us up a little bit.
- 17:58Sometimes we like to do like a quick background like where
- 18:00you're from siblings, all that stuff from New York and was like
- 18:05growing up in. Yeah, I was born and raised in
- 18:07Long Island, New York, I was adopted and that'll play.
- 18:12We answer another question that comes up later, but adopted do
- 18:14that. My whole life grew up on Long
- 18:15Island. We moved here.
- 18:17I have a sister who's also adopted.
- 18:19Not, no blood relation between us.
- 18:22We moved here in 97. It was the day before my 17th.
- 18:25Birthday, thanks, Dad. Worst thing, ever going from New
- 18:29York, right? Experience some amount of
- 18:31culture and nightlife and things for 17 years old and 97.
- 18:34So, like, you were, you were like Prime hip-hop.
- 18:37Like to, I Will Not Prime, right?
- 18:38Like, that's so I kind of more like todos to look.
- 18:42That was that was 97 was like the Pinnacle.
- 18:44I mean, that you're talking about.
- 18:45That was when bad that was, let's go Steve.
- 18:49That was bigge pause. Yeah, that was.
- 18:50That was yeah, okay, sorry. I was thinking like, what is it?
- 18:54Isn't it like 85-89, that's NWA. Yeah, it would be.
- 18:58Yeah. That's when you're talking about
- 19:00like the roots. I mean, that's what I would call
- 19:02like the old school but yeah, I mean, 97 was that's post golden
- 19:06era in my opinion. But, but yeah, I mean, that was
- 19:09when hip-hop was thriving, right?
- 19:11And then so many, Different Lanes other York.
- 19:13So then yeah. I like just yeah.
- 19:16You got it from the from the from the culture that you did.
- 19:20How? Yeah.
- 19:21It was and I'm A hip-hop head through and through no matter
- 19:24what I do no matter what a guy that's yeah.
- 19:28And I mean like I so I moved here hated it wasn't DJ and I
- 19:33was getting into the MC stuff and then at one point someone
- 19:36was at a party, someone was selling some decks and I was
- 19:39like, I will take those because I was throwing my own parties.
- 19:42Bought the Dexter and you were like, throwing your own parties
- 19:45because like that again, like that was something that you grew
- 19:47up with already know. So I got some when I first moved
- 19:50here, I didn't really find a place and then after I got
- 19:52through High School, kind of found the local Rave scene in
- 19:569899 and met a few catch that were really into old school.
- 20:01Hip-hop like same stuff, I was East Coast hip hop to the
- 20:04fullest and also some of the cats that were big into some of
- 20:06the real stuff that I've also into.
- 20:08And I was like, wait a minute. My people know that they raised.
- 20:12I was like, oh yeah I miss back in the day Raves.
- 20:16Honestly, I remember one of the first ones I went to was at the
- 20:19Armory and DJ Shelly and DJJ were doing a back to back
- 20:24old-school hardcore set. And I was like, oh my God, I
- 20:28haven't heard this in a while, and I've just lost my, I'm like,
- 20:31all right, this is where I belong and I was that, dude,
- 20:33that was on the dance floor with a gas mask on.
- 20:37There's actually a video of me in 2002 Moon, Over America had
- 20:42released a DVD mean, a bunch of the homies from here.
- 20:45We went down to airport to, which was basically the
- 20:49predecessor to. What is now, EDC?
- 20:51Electronic Daisy, Carnival airport to was the lead up to
- 20:53that if you will. And we went down there and I was
- 20:56in the documentary standing in line, me and Chrissy and I got
- 21:00my cat in the hat on the side of nine hours to Rave all night.
- 21:08So you're throwing parties here, you're finding your people.
- 21:11And then So, yeah, I was throwing parties finding my
- 21:13people and then, let's just say, what's the best way to put this?
- 21:19Social Circles went into upheaval.
- 21:20So, I basically that whole group that I was hanging out with
- 21:22them, like, all right, I'm out shell.
- 21:25So basically just kind of hit the reset button on life and
- 21:28then got into the MC battles. Met a couple people.
- 21:33And then when I was doing the battles, I was spinning and like
- 21:37I was always big about samples and the old school drum brakes
- 21:40and where everything came from. And all Stuff.
- 21:42I was just a student of hip-hop if you will.
- 21:44So I remember one of the nights. I was just rocking doubles of
- 21:48Babe, Ruth Mexican famous, b-boy, drum brake.
- 21:51So I was just going back. And what do you know, just going
- 21:55back and forth and my homie. Pat comes up to me how my homie
- 21:59didn't know him. Then he's like what?
- 22:01You know about this. I'm like, I'm the one playing
- 22:03it. What do you know about them?
- 22:05I'm a b-boy and I'm like, nah, there's be boys out here.
- 22:08So you're like in Kansas, you're looking at One right there.
- 22:13Well we instantly hit it off and became homies and still homies
- 22:16this day he actually is down in Houston now but like that was
- 22:20just like oh this is where I belong.
- 22:21So I started doing b-boy battles.
- 22:24I need you to break down some battles.
- 22:25I mean, we drove the homie bands and Jabbawockeez what?
- 22:39That's so crazy. Oh my God.
- 22:42Going like all over the. Okay.
- 22:44Thank you. But then also Super Crew.
- 22:46I know those cats like all that America's Best Dance Crew.
- 22:48I know. Yeah a lot of those people as
- 22:50they would be always Judd. So the big thing for the DJ of
- 22:52the b-boy battles. It wasn't the DJ's were
- 22:54important. It was more important to the
- 22:56judges Works. They would fly in the top guys
- 22:58judges for the battle. So like all those cats it's like
- 23:02yeah I know that's that's the dude.
- 23:03I know that's a dude. I met.
- 23:04Oh yeah, you remember when we did this and like it's a small
- 23:07world, it's tight and that scene is now blown up as their group
- 23:10copper modern as well, right? Right cup of water.
- 23:13Is one of the it was Asian group back in SoCal.
- 23:16Sounds familiar. Yeah.
- 23:17Couple minor is one of the I'm ever back in the day.
- 23:20I used to watch their there's two season to.
- 23:25Yeah. Okay.
- 23:26Is it wait one thing in season one is?
- 23:27Well yeah. Oh baby.
- 23:31Just died walkies, huh? Oh anyways.
- 23:33I'm sorry. Oh yeah.
- 23:36No, and that. Now, that seems cold blowing up
- 23:37because breakdancing is in the Olympics coming up what I know
- 23:42that absolutely so interested now trying to figure out how the
- 23:48like, is it, how did that work? That's that's the questions I'm
- 23:52asking. Like house judging how is it is
- 23:54head-to-head? I don't want it to be, like,
- 23:56gymnastics floor, routines, where everybody likes.
- 24:02Like, you guys serve it better be like, you got served.
- 24:06It's gonna be so mad if it's not like that understanding.
- 24:10So, but yeah, I'm really Really curious to see what the rules
- 24:13because I'm sure there's also all kinds of stuff like normally
- 24:15did you him you got music but you can't have anything copy
- 24:18written when it's the Olympics or everything's gonna have to be
- 24:20created just for that. So I'm very curious the layers
- 24:23of what's going on but yeah breakdancing is an Olympic
- 24:27event. Now, what I love it, I I'm all
- 24:30for it. Yeah, I'm all for it.
- 24:32That's dope. Okay so let's see where we be
- 24:36boys. Okay.
- 24:37So we did the b-boy thing and then come to that.
- 24:42I was in one. I got a residency.
- 24:45My first residency was at fins Lounge.
- 24:48The original fins Lounge was a split-level bar, great place.
- 24:52And this is, this is when the error when everyone was kind of
- 24:55doing CDs because you can get your burn CDs.
- 24:58Yeah. LimeWire lime wine.
- 25:00Making you're making all your stuff.
- 25:02Yeah. But I was told vinyl guy I
- 25:05didn't like I didn't like the feel I was like no I need
- 25:08records. So and also at this point in
- 25:10time, no one was paying me enough.
- 25:12So I'm like in order to get to play a single song.
- 25:14So in order to get properly, play a song when you do mix in
- 25:17hip-hop you need two copies of the song cause you can like
- 25:20mixing the instrumental to the song that's playing and then
- 25:22you're going to take that off, put the root full version on,
- 25:25then drop into that, then do a little routine then.
- 25:27So you had to get two copies of a 12-inch single each vertex.
- 25:30H, copy is six bucks. So if I wanted to play one song,
- 25:34yeah, I had to spend $12 plus shipping and you hold it wasn't
- 25:37warped on your front porch. Yeah.
- 25:40So everyone used to be like You got that Newton like hell no.
- 25:43Like it's gonna be gone in two weeks, know about the music that
- 25:46I invested. So I was doing a lot of like
- 25:48mashups and I just people knew me for like just plain weird
- 25:52shit because I play whatever I can find in the dollar bin on my
- 25:55command shit work. Yeah.
- 25:57That was kind of my vibe. And I mean to this day I still
- 26:00have people that remember, those original days of fins, are
- 26:02people still hit me up here? I feel like I still got that CD.
- 26:05Frig no fresh volume 1 but yeah, it was.
- 26:10Did you always know that you wanted?
- 26:12Go into DJing like you didn't go like this truth, quote unquote,
- 26:15traditional real going into college that sort of thing or
- 26:18you didn't get you into. It was always just a side thing
- 26:22like I did it and then I got hit up about.
- 26:24Do you want to do this party? Want to do this party.
- 26:26So basically from 2001 through 2017, I was in Old Town door
- 26:32downtown at least twice a week for all those years at my Peak.
- 26:35I had five nights a week but it was just something that I did on
- 26:39the side. I always had a full-time job.
- 26:40So basically I work The Bombardier for seven years, I've
- 26:44worked at Coleman for eight years and I worked at are
- 26:46capital delivery and everyone's like, dude, you have a day job.
- 26:49I was like, when I left my day job was vice, president of
- 26:51operations at that company. And yeah, it was like wait what?
- 26:54I can't imagine that. I'm like no, I was like close to
- 26:57the vest where the button up and like all proper and but ya know,
- 27:01I had a big wake-up call a few years ago.
- 27:04So well I guess let me tell this story.
- 27:07Yeah, tell us, tell us what gets what you're doing.
- 27:09Just to where I'm at now. Yeah.
- 27:12So I've been DJing for like I said since 2001 and before that,
- 27:15but since 2001, I've been actively DJing in Wichita doing
- 27:19private events as well and this and that.
- 27:21So four years ago, I wake up in the middle of the night in pain
- 27:26and I never go to the doctor or anything like that, but that
- 27:29won't stop. Girl.
- 27:29I'm like we need to go to the ER, she's like, oh, that's not
- 27:33good because you would never do that.
- 27:35So, go to the, ER, I've kidney stones.
- 27:38So they're like, okay, but when you see the specialist have that
- 27:41they'll Follow up. Okay, so I go see the
- 27:43Specialties, like I don't like this game.
- 27:44Let's take another one. Whoo, we're 99%.
- 27:47Certain you have cancer. Okay, that's hard.
- 27:53Yeah, I in all honesty I was kind of in disbelief and
- 27:55everyone around me like, was a gut punch and I'm just like, not
- 27:58man, we're good. So basically they said we're
- 28:00gonna go in. We're going to cut a little part
- 28:01of your kidney off, and we're going to go in like five
- 28:04incisions cut a little part. Kidding off, you'll be fine.
- 28:07Three weeks later, three weeks will surgery.
- 28:09Surgery for three weeks. So said, schedule, the surgery
- 28:11for three weeks later a week and a half.
- 28:15Later, I got a message online. So I mentioned earlier, I was
- 28:17adopted, I knew that my whole life.
- 28:19I taken one of those online DNA test just because everyone claim
- 28:22me, they're like, oh, you definitely part this man, you
- 28:24definitely Italian. You definitely, like, all of it.
- 28:31And I love that. But yes, what unites us didn't
- 28:34think much of it. And, but then fast forward, two
- 28:38and a half years later. I get a message.
- 28:40Hi, I'm 99% certain Year. My nephew you were born on this
- 28:45date in this Hospital. Giving up to this charity group
- 28:48for adoption. Like how do holy shit?
- 28:51Yeah, they matched. They took a DNA test, 23 and me,
- 28:55both you and him. I took a DNA test and my aunt
- 28:58took a DNA test, just to find your heritage.
- 29:01Oh my God. And when you take the test, you
- 29:03can leave it open if you want people to be able to connect.
- 29:07And I definitely said with my story.
- 29:08Absolutely. Alright, so, because my sister,
- 29:12she was adopted as well. But I was, I was given up for
- 29:14adoption in New York state. She was giving up in Washington
- 29:16state. The laws are different, your
- 29:18blood sister, No, no just raised, but her birth family,
- 29:22contacted her after her 18th birthday, cuz they were able to
- 29:24open the books. So, my birth, my sister, my
- 29:28sister found her birth family, they stayed together.
- 29:31They give her up because she was too young.
- 29:32They were too young. My sister has two full blooded
- 29:34sisters. Whoa.
- 29:36And they came out to meet him. It was amazing.
- 29:38Like that is like a goose but like they're just our family
- 29:40just grew so. So I remember when that happened
- 29:47her. My sister's birth mother asked
- 29:49me. Do you want to find your mom
- 29:50like not to be selfish? But no like if she's in a bad
- 29:54place I have a good heart. I'm gonna want to help and I
- 29:57don't want the burden. Like I'm in a good place.
- 29:59I don't, you know. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:01So not don't know if I'm emotionally ready for that.
- 30:04Yeah, yeah. And and I'm in a good place.
- 30:07Yeah. I don't need a bird and I don't
- 30:09need, I don't need that. So, but anyways, so my aunt
- 30:14she's like well you're my nephew and I was like oh shit.
- 30:19So So she says, can I call you? And I'm like, yeah, absolutely.
- 30:22So that night we call Waterworks and the whole nine.
- 30:25I mean, it was so it turns out old, were you when that
- 30:28happened. This was so just 38. 39 is a
- 30:33very recent. Yeah.
- 30:34Yeah. This is like, yeah, yeah, this
- 30:36was this happened in 2018, November. 2018 is when I had my
- 30:44surgery. So so I call her.
- 30:47We even Stanley friend each other on Facebook and L.
- 30:49So it turns out my birth mother, she passed away in a house fire
- 30:52in 97. They were all on Long Island New
- 30:55York, I left Long Island, New York to move here in 97.
- 30:58So like really bizarre alignment like crazy, but she was one of
- 31:03eight brothers and sisters, so huge family.
- 31:07So we should never had any other kids never was involved after
- 31:11all that. But they went and found me on
- 31:14Facebook and they started looking at pictures.
- 31:16They saw pictures of my daughter Brooklyn, and one of my aunt saw
- 31:19this. Photo and literally like fell to
- 31:20her knees. Like, oh my God, it's Ellen.
- 31:22My birth mother. Like she was, it's our cyst.
- 31:24Like they were, just just shook. And so it was, I'm like, oh my
- 31:30God, this is incredible. All the feelings, all the
- 31:31emotions. P.s.
- 31:33I have cancer. I got surgery a week and a half.
- 31:37I don't want to back burner, this by any stretch, but I think
- 31:39I need to. Yeah, so I go in and have the
- 31:42surgery. The mass on my kidney had grown
- 31:4535% in three weeks O'Shea's. It was huge Very aggressive.
- 31:50They ended up removing my entire kidney among some complications
- 31:53going. Apparently, I decided to Hulk
- 31:56out during surgery and fight through anesthesia or something.
- 31:59Don't remember who that but uh, they, they removed the whole
- 32:02kidney. I came out, I am now four years.
- 32:04Remove completely cancer-free, yes, and Gratz, thank ya.
- 32:09So, it was one of the surgery was on Monday and that's
- 32:12Saturday, I had a gig. Hmm, obviously, I had someone
- 32:14booked the covering. I wasn't bad.
- 32:16I was like, whoa, but I was determined So you were going to
- 32:20try to make it. Yeah.
- 32:21Okay and they said you're not allowed to lift anything over 10
- 32:23pounds for the next six months. And I'm like, so I had Justin J.
- 32:27Scratch covering the gig and he's like, I'll whatever you
- 32:29need, man. So I'm literally in the
- 32:31hospital, get my phone out and like, rolling over.
- 32:34I'm racked in pain, but the doctor says, like you can't hurt
- 32:37anything. It hurts.
- 32:38Like hell but you're not going to damage anything.
- 32:40So whatever you're comfortable with not a high-top pain.
- 32:43Tolerance and I'm stubborn as hell.
- 32:45So I'm literally rolling out of bed and my wife's like, take it
- 32:48easy on long ago. My girlfriend - I don't like
- 32:51that. So literally would like to get
- 32:54my phone out, put Spotify on start playing like the Rocky
- 32:56theme song and I'm walking down, like people in the other waiting
- 33:01rooms is really go get him nuts. Yeah, long story short that
- 33:08Friday that's Saturday because so inspirational it's so
- 33:10motivating. It is yeah and I made it to the
- 33:13gig on Saturday reason why it was the Cattle Baron's ball
- 33:16which is the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
- 33:20So they, they look to me, like, you're not supposed to be here.
- 33:23I'm like, I'm gonna be here and like, yeah, I like my sides were
- 33:26taped up. I literally was leaking through
- 33:28my shirt a little bit, like they're, like, it's just that's
- 33:31a bit much. And I'm like, I had to be here,
- 33:33and so it was pretty amazing. And then shortly after that came
- 33:37through all that my girlfriend got married.
- 33:39I had two, aunts and uncle fly out to meet me.
- 33:41Almost 40 years old, first time in my life, I have blood family.
- 33:44Yeah, how was that? What was that?
- 33:45Like, how's your feeling? Just overwhelmed.
- 33:49Woman gratitude because they, they came in met the parents
- 33:51that raised me and and they were all in tears because it was
- 33:54like, we thank you for giving him the opportunity to live life
- 33:57that he has, and my parents thanking them for giving me to
- 34:02that, you know what I mean. So, it's just, just all the
- 34:05Gratitude and all the water works.
- 34:07And yeah, and yeah. So, yeah.
- 34:10And then, so that all happened, that'll happen in basically four
- 34:14or five months. Hmm.
- 34:16All of that from kidney cancer, married, birth, family, All
- 34:19that. Oh my God.
- 34:22So eventually went back to work. I was miserable and my wife.
- 34:26Now wife is like, I got a good job, take the leap.
- 34:30And I'm like, I've been the provider, I don't feel
- 34:33comfortable, you know, I've got two kids from format and gotta
- 34:35pay that, you know. And she pushed me and I made the
- 34:40leap, I left my day job in November of 2019.
- 34:43Hmm, just before covid really bad time to be a full and
- 34:47detailed. So I struggled through that I
- 34:50ended up coming up with side hustles.
- 34:52I'm like, you need to make $100 a day.
- 34:54I don't give a help. Damn what you do.
- 34:56I started making lamps. I'm literally sold custom art
- 34:59piece lamps? Yeah, craziest thing.
- 35:02But yeah. So I did that.
- 35:03And then got through it and then 21 came around and we've been
- 35:07gangbusters ever since so survive.
- 35:09That's tough tough time. And now I'm flourishing, I mean,
- 35:13at the end of last year, I was so busy that I had to hire other
- 35:15DJ's. I that was part of my Five-Year
- 35:17Plan. Yeah, ended up paying out good
- 35:18money too. A handful of guys at the end of
- 35:20last year with holiday parties in this and that.
- 35:22So I'm already growing to having a team within two years of
- 35:25hitting the ground running. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 35:28That is incredible. Look at you go.
- 35:30Yeah. See you to shop for that.
- 35:34Let me do that. Do we really want that?
- 35:38Do we. I'm okay Drink Alone.
- 35:46Hi, I like the bottle effect on the mic right there.
- 35:48So doodle yes. I always have to do that.
- 35:55That. Wow, holy shit.
- 35:57So okay. So now you're in.
- 36:01So now essentially four years into no three years, I can't do
- 36:06math, 2020. Feels like, it was like a
- 36:08lifetime ago, and then it also feels like it's five years long.
- 36:12Yes. And it also feels like it just
- 36:14happened. Yeah, that's just crazy.
- 36:15Your story is so inspiring. Like I love it.
- 36:19I love to share it, it's overwhelming.
- 36:22And I've had a handful of people.
- 36:24We'll just be like, that's incredible.
- 36:26And a lot of people I've had a few groups that after that
- 36:30actually, the next year for the Cattle, Baron's there, like,
- 36:32they did it virtual there. Like, could you record your
- 36:34story for us for our introduction for?
- 36:36I'm like, absolutely. And I just feel blessed to be
- 36:39able to share it and the fact that anybody gets feel some type
- 36:43of way and gets motivated in some type of way about it.
- 36:45Then all the more power to it so I'm just grateful to be here for
- 36:48it. So James hydrocarbon, thank you
- 36:52for sharing that with us. Cheers.
- 36:54Cheers Marcia. Thank you, salud.
- 37:04Our head is shrinking. I'm coming off of dry January.
- 37:06So who? Yeah.
- 37:09So who, and what influence you to be, what made you want to be
- 37:14a DJ full-time? Um, my cousin is where it starts
- 37:18well not full-time, full-time. Exit, that comes later after
- 37:21this one. Yeah, the full time actually.
- 37:24I mean, I've always wanted to but I was scared shitless.
- 37:28Probably one of the people that really made me think.
- 37:30About it. The most probably doesn't even
- 37:32know it was my homie, Brent tactic out of Kansas City.
- 37:36He was a promoter we when I was doing my Rock Island days, he
- 37:39would be booking National tours and he's like, hey can we get a
- 37:43date on a? We come through one of your
- 37:45Wednesdays. We had a party on Wednesdays
- 37:46that was really beyond words and it was you didn't think you were
- 37:51in Wichita, like yeah, we booked DJs and said, do what you do?
- 37:56Don't cater don't do nothing like go hard on you.
- 38:00And we were pushing boundaries and it was the biggest party for
- 38:05four years running. Like at capacity before the
- 38:09doors. Open type shed.
- 38:10Yeah. As back, then, our weekend
- 38:13started on Wednesdays. I think I'm, I think I have
- 38:17like, probably like 30 people that blame me for losing their
- 38:20jobs because it was called T, giw.
- 38:23Uh-huh. I got this Wednesday also
- 38:24called. FML it.
- 38:26Fuck my life. It's Thursday.
- 38:30I'm gonna put that on. I actually know what I do.
- 38:36We should name. What?
- 38:37I do an Instagram and like when I want to drink I'm gonna put
- 38:40fuck it's Thursday. Yeah we went there we went hard
- 38:44but ya know. He was booking that and he
- 38:46actually he was up in Kansas City and was funny.
- 38:48He would book these guys on National tours.
- 38:50They'd be doing like 10 20 city tours.
- 38:52Plus like how the fuck was Wichita?
- 38:54Kansas on a Wednesday. One of our favorite stops of the
- 38:56whole tour. We went we turned up But yeah,
- 39:00no. He actually left what he was
- 39:02doing and went full time doing. And now, he's managing a number
- 39:07of artists. I've actually booked a handful
- 39:08of people through him and he's just a great dude, super humble,
- 39:13super genuine. Always one of the tastiest,
- 39:16DJ's. I know.
- 39:16And just a paste. Yes, I love that.
- 39:19I love, I love that word to describe DJ's.
- 39:21One of my friends. He listens to a lot of DJ's to
- 39:25and he always talks about, like, listen to this, this tasty track
- 39:29and I'm always like, okay, Okay, he always says that to me.
- 39:33Sorry, keep going. Let's, those are the lamps.
- 39:35So those are the lamps that I made out of pipe fittings at a
- 39:37plumbing pipe fittings. What?
- 39:39That's cool. I ended up selling like over 200
- 39:42of those in town. Holy shit.
- 39:45How much did you sell them for? I think originally, it was like
- 39:48160 that one. Yeah, price has gone up since.
- 39:53But yeah, well, I mean you did say you were trying to make 100
- 39:56a week so 100, a sorry? Yes.
- 39:59Well yeah not a week There's My bad.
- 40:01But yeah, I would just hustle. I'd be like, I'm gonna be like,
- 40:04I would go to the pop-up Park when people when they have the,
- 40:06you know, the food trucks and I'm like I'm gonna DJ see if I
- 40:09get some tips, I'm gonna flip this.
- 40:11I'm going to flip a garage sale thing.
- 40:12Like I, you know, I, you know, I just whatever it was.
- 40:16I'm like, I will go wash dishes for the day.
- 40:17If I can't make, you know, my old job, thank God my boss.
- 40:20He's like, hey, you want to come back and do some Consulting?
- 40:22So I was in there once or twice a week, so like there were
- 40:25things that made it easy, but I was just determined, I'm like,
- 40:27I'm not gonna stop. I'm going to make a hundred
- 40:29dollars a day. And like, I was doing good like
- 40:31she even streaming. I was making money streaming
- 40:33until I got banned for social media for a while due to
- 40:36copyright. Oh I got a 3 month ban.
- 40:38I was not allowed to post on Facebook, goddamn copyright.
- 40:43Yeah, it's tough. We got told that for one of our
- 40:46episodes actually recently. Yeah, I had to answer to that
- 40:49and I was like, okay I'll calm down with but also like Emily
- 40:55and I were like, oh my God, I means we're making it because we
- 40:57got the copyrighted somebody Thing to us, nobody's listening
- 41:02to us. It's just a robot, a robot I'm
- 41:07going to. We're going to take the robots
- 41:09attention. Yeah, we're going to take the W
- 41:11because like the robot could have a avoided us.
- 41:14Like they were probably like, you know, if this plate if this
- 41:17podcast gets like 15 listeners. We're not going to say anything.
- 41:20Whatever their no one's listening to them.
- 41:22But like where we're at now? That robot was like, nah, you're
- 41:25growing copyright. We're like, yes.
- 41:29So your cousin Helped you influence to be a DJ, right?
- 41:32So that's where the name Carmen came from what so he gave it to,
- 41:35you know? So I was 14.
- 41:38I was this young kid Young Buck and I had a cousin that was a DJ
- 41:42and I was obsessed. I felt what I did.
- 41:44I was carry his crates into the club that I would sit in the DJ
- 41:48booth and watch in Rhode Island. So, I would sit there and watch
- 41:55and I was just like obsessed with it.
- 41:57I was like, oh my God, this man, I'm just like, thinking like
- 42:00This is your New York is like underground shit over there.
- 42:03Yeah. Damn.
- 42:05Different world different world. And so I was underage kid and,
- 42:09you know you had some of the bar staff that was just like and let
- 42:13me slip you a drink and someone like I let me refill your
- 42:16Shirley Temple. You know, any like that.
- 42:18I want to MD little brother, like everyone kind of looked out
- 42:25for me and I wasn't wandering. I was just like, I'm just happy
- 42:28to be here. I'm going to shut up.
- 42:29Yeah. But everyone kind of knew me
- 42:31from there. Like I was the young kid that
- 42:33was posted up in the DJ booth, well, that club closed down.
- 42:35So my cousin started teaching some other spots and they saw me
- 42:37there. Well, the first Club was called
- 42:39carbons like, hey, is that carbon kid.
- 42:41Well, after I moved here, there was another DJ Big Spade.
- 42:48His name is James, which is my name is well and he had the
- 42:51party house. So every time we be there, it's
- 42:52like James. Yeah.
- 42:53What's up? No, the other one?
- 42:55Ah, damn. I'm like our closest thing I had
- 42:57to a nickname was carbon and then that's it.
- 43:00Click on. Yeah.
- 43:01And now your dad's calling you Carbon 2.
- 43:03Yeah. It's just a mess of things.
- 43:04I love it. He's proud though.
- 43:06I remember like although I don't think anyone gets a newspaper
- 43:09but I remember every time I had an event in the paper, every
- 43:11time my name is in favor. First thing in the morning, he
- 43:13sent me a photo texted me and he's like look at you look at
- 43:16you like oh that feels good. Wait till allows pause cat
- 43:20podcasts out. Yes.
- 43:22Yes. Got to be able to access the
- 43:24podcast. I don't know.
- 43:25Hey, we're on everything. We're in everything.
- 43:27I don't know if he knows it. I'll go to his house and print a
- 43:31paper out and put right there in front of him.
- 43:35But on that note, let's take a quick break because we still
- 43:38haven't introduced your drink. We still haven't even gone into
- 43:40all of the awesome stuff but we did tap into learning a little
- 43:43bit more about you that a lot of people don't get to know you're
- 43:46excited about that. All right?
- 43:47Yeah. Oh and then we're coming back
- 43:49with you freestyling. But we have to have the drinks
- 43:52first. Oh yeah, back in the brake
- 44:38feeling. Great.
- 44:39Take me. A back to Wednesday night's
- 44:41Carvin popular genres of the EDM scene
- 44:55but man, it blew the roof off a rock out and back in those days.
- 45:00It was a whole thing. It's fun to see, coming back
- 45:03around a little bit like, with a mixes and I'm like, but I think
- 45:07it feeds into a, like, all the AMA piano and a lot of that for
- 45:09ya. That mid-tempo rain.
- 45:11Yeah like dude it was just dude everybody looks good dancing at
- 45:14that Tempo I money it is inherently sexy when he went 132
- 45:19BPM 170 p.m. just write very much is wholly.
- 45:23Iraq, two segments to we're sitting here with carbon, we've
- 45:27got our drinks made the drink that we chose.
- 45:31I helped choose because you had stated that you are into whiskey
- 45:37and being that you are from new York.
- 45:40We went with a New York sour. Yeah.
- 45:43So in the background you'll be able to hear Emily making a New
- 45:46York's. Our it's a just two ounces of
- 45:50whiskey. We chose for roses and then one
- 45:54ounce of lemon juice shaken over.
- 45:57I don't know if you want to start making it while I'm saying
- 45:58this. But okay.
- 46:03But okay. I thought you I thought we
- 46:04decided no. Where were you?
- 46:07So I'm just going to tie everybody since I'm the
- 46:09bartender. We're here today today.
- 46:13So Fanny already said, what were you using and everything.
- 46:17So what I'm going to do is going to make the drink so I need 2
- 46:22ounces of whiskey. All over me.
- 46:29I'm gonna make a song titled that Two ounces of whiskey all
- 46:33over. You do that.
- 46:36Bam. You need one ounce of lemon
- 46:38juice. This is all.
- 46:48This is all over me guys. Dan are you?
- 46:53Put 3/4 ounce of simple syrup. I don't want 3/4 Oz but I'm just
- 47:00going to eyeball it. And that's how you do it.
- 47:06That was perfect. Then top it, shake it.
- 47:14I would I would do it there. What's the deal with whiskey
- 47:20whiskey? Really enjoy.
- 47:24Just the all the different brands of varieties.
- 47:26I mean, like I enjoy, I'm a liquor guy.
- 47:29I'm a fan of a cocktail so but whiskey, I think within it,
- 47:33there's so many different flavor profiles that I've just gotten
- 47:35into it. Not I'm not a snob about it but
- 47:38I just just enjoy. And I'm like this is different
- 47:40than that. That's different than this and
- 47:42between all the different bourbons and Whiskey's.
- 47:44I've just gotten into it a lot more than anything else.
- 47:47I mean, I'll drink anything. My thing is that I'm saying
- 47:50earlier, I'm, I love a good cocktail when I go into a bar.
- 47:53What do you have that? Know what, I can't get somewhere
- 47:55else. That's what I like.
- 47:57I'm like, put me onto something new.
- 47:58Like, oh, everybody most popular drink is our old fashioned like
- 48:01this is the most popular drink at 17 other bars to you know.
- 48:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:05What's yours? Yeah, that's why I love a good
- 48:08bartender. Like when you can give me like
- 48:10I'm like normally I'll go in and like all right give me rum and
- 48:14something rum in a flavor and then figure it out.
- 48:18Like I want Citrus or wants our and a rum figured.
- 48:21Okay, what do you got, you know? Yeah, all right.
- 48:25I made our drink. Also, one more thing.
- 48:28One more thing. Whiskey.
- 48:30Did, you know, there's this thing called, like, people go
- 48:32around liquor stores and find one of the rares whiskey on the
- 48:37shelves and it's like, you'll find the whiskey at the
- 48:41allocator something like say this, but it's like a it's like
- 48:46a trend going on people go. Foreign liquor stores and fine
- 48:49like a rare risky and I guess like, one of the liquor stores
- 48:55here in Wichita, they bring out One Whiskey, every two hours and
- 48:59put it on the Shelf. It's like a really really yeah,
- 49:03yeah, yeah. Where they do like a release of
- 49:05it and stuff like that. Yeah.
- 49:06Actually they. So one of the things that's
- 49:08cool. The humidor West Side humidor.
- 49:10Yeah, over there. I forget what night they're
- 49:12doing it. I don't know if they're still
- 49:13doing but they were where it was killed the bottle.
- 49:16It was like kill the bottle. Days.
- 49:18So we'd have like a very rare whiskey.
- 49:20That would normally be like a, you know, like a 15 dollar shot
- 49:22or something like that. And they say until this bottle
- 49:25is gone, we're charging seven bucks a shot or so, you know,
- 49:27nothing like crazy discount. But know there's people that are
- 49:30doing, like crazy, whiskey Hans, like you get a rare thing.
- 49:34How many bottles of that? Can you get?
- 49:35I remember like, my uncle was visiting.
- 49:36He was visiting from Pennsylvania, and as he was
- 49:38driving down, they would like stop and stores and see if they
- 49:40could find some of this stuff. Yeah, that's what I did
- 49:43yesterday. For my brother-in-law.
- 49:45He's like, em, take me to all the liquor stores on.
- 49:47There's just the one liquor that is called something.
- 49:51Well, I've had to call but it's like a bourbon.
- 49:54I think it's bourbon. Whiskey and Bourbons are
- 49:56different, right? Same neighborhood.
- 49:59But yeah, that's kind of why I like whiskey because there's
- 50:01Bourbons is this Keys? There's ride, there's a lot of
- 50:04different takes. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 50:07My brother and all yesterday. And we took him, I took him to
- 50:09so many liquor stores here in Wichita, not even know about it.
- 50:12But anyways, taste your drink. Tell us what you think.
- 50:22Oh, that's nice really. Okay.
- 50:25Okay, yeah, I wasn't sure what the wind stopper.
- 50:28But ya know that cuts it really nicely.
- 50:31Okay. Yeah, I mess with that and with
- 50:32a shows, fractions, I love that. What is this?
- 50:41Does he chose that for you, Blue Barrel aged Cabernet Sauvignon.
- 50:45So I feel like I should be a Wong guy with how much Italian
- 50:47food. I eat, never have been, but I
- 50:51might have to try Of that on its own and your before we all said
- 50:53and done. Yeah I got a job face it.
- 50:55Good Maple and Maize Road. It's liquor store there.
- 50:58Oh, yeah, exact which no no. It's like Rolling Hills or yeah
- 51:03yells. Yep.
- 51:04The one with the Statue out front, just south of the
- 51:07Horizon. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:09I got you. Yeah, I normally go to Auburn
- 51:11Spirits just on the other side over there and 1/35.
- 51:15I'll stop in there sometimes because I live, I live, like I
- 51:18walk there. Nice homes, we don't mind.
- 51:21They do they do a really good job.
- 51:24Yeah, I would walk that way for liquor and then I used to I miss
- 51:27can I I used to walk that way for sushi.
- 51:29I would get sucky drunk. It can I and then walk we miss
- 51:34you Chef. Can I do you ever go over there?
- 51:37I never got the chance to like I've been living at Maple and
- 51:40Maize just south of Kellogg for a few years now.
- 51:44Gotcha. Yeah he's been gone for a
- 51:46handful. Yeah, we're actually gonna go
- 51:48visit, we became really good friends with chef and his wife.
- 51:51Mary, we took Sushi lessons and everything else.
- 51:54And they ended up moving to New Orleans and so me and wife,
- 51:57you're planning a trip. And we're going to stop by and
- 51:59see him nine. I remember actually, after they
- 52:02left, it was just before it was during covid.
- 52:05My wife is making sushi. I need we literally did like a
- 52:08FaceTime lesson with Chef. Who doesn't speak English?
- 52:11Mari would his wife would translate but he's traditionally
- 52:13Japanese trains and this and that but we did a FaceTime.
- 52:15Listen, he's translated as she's translating my wife's like you
- 52:19old the phone. I'm doing it, but yeah, they're
- 52:23awesome people. Awesome people.
- 52:25So, speaking of some ways to connect with people, right?
- 52:30Like, you were like, all right, so how am I supposed to
- 52:32understand what he's saying? Because you had to translate.
- 52:34We wanted to know a little bit about how maybe you engage and
- 52:37connect with your audience during a performance.
- 52:39But like outside of performing, Or even during during it out,
- 52:44know what that means. I don't know what she said at
- 52:49halftime to I don't like I mean for me like my big thing.
- 52:56I guess how I approach it as a DJ.
- 53:01I've always felt like especially in this market.
- 53:03I felt it was really easy for me to carve out my own lane.
- 53:07And the reason for that was because I felt like I came from
- 53:10one side where I'm like, I know what's good?
- 53:12Screw what you think is good. I'm going to do this, I get
- 53:15that. But then There was a lot of
- 53:17people with that mentality but then there was other people that
- 53:19would be the complete opposite to say, I'm going to go get the
- 53:22Billboard top 10 hits and that's what I'm going to do.
- 53:25And typically, most of the DJs and around here, when I was
- 53:29coming up, were in one of those two camps and there wasn't much
- 53:32in the middle and I just basically I was like all right I
- 53:35want to get you here but I know you're not ready to jump in the
- 53:38deep end so let's start here. Oh I went too far.
- 53:41Okay, let me dial it back a little bit, and then before the
- 53:43nights over, you're jamming, do exactly what I wanted to get to.
- 53:46It, just might take me. Little while to get there.
- 53:48But that was kind of the nature of it in and being able to take
- 53:52people on a journey with that. And and the big thing for me and
- 53:56this is just DJing in general. And what I consider to be DJing
- 54:00as a lot different for a lot of people because for me, DJing is
- 54:04not the act of mixing music. DJ is responding to what's in
- 54:10front of you in the crowd and going with that.
- 54:12So a lot of people plant asset and it's great.
- 54:14I mean it's it could be sonically Awful and Technical
- 54:18and all those things, but that's not DJing that's producing to me
- 54:22like you put these pieces together because they all work,
- 54:25but for me DJing is seen what's in front of you and responding
- 54:28to that and getting them to go to the next level because of
- 54:32something that you caught on the fly or something, you know what
- 54:35I mean? Like like it's being able to
- 54:36improvise and do that and that's something that the in the modern
- 54:41terms of what people think of DJing, you know, everyone knows
- 54:44the hand hearts and the the big festivals and that everyone's
- 54:46facing the DJ booth. I mean, my favorite thing
- 54:49growing up like I liked it when the DJ booth was in the corner
- 54:52and no one saw the DJ. And the best compliment I can be
- 54:55paid is when you walked out of the club dripping with sweat.
- 54:58That means my job. Yeah.
- 54:59I don't need the accolades of like, yeah, your kilt, like,
- 55:02that's cool and all, but but I liked it when people were
- 55:05dancing, the whole like, you're in the zone the moshing and this
- 55:09like, I'm a big fan of the dance.
- 55:11And, and what it means to people interacting in a dance, I don't
- 55:14like it when everyone's facing a DJ booth.
- 55:17It's I get it and it's where it is now and it's not going back,
- 55:21but but for me, like I said, even within that it's about
- 55:24responding to wear. Like when one of my first gigs
- 55:27was Finn's, Finn's Lounge, was a little split level 2 bar.
- 55:31The Dance Floor was like smaller than this table.
- 55:34It was a tiny little checkerboard dance floor, that
- 55:37pool table down said, but I love the space, because it taught me
- 55:40so much because I would have to learn.
- 55:42Okay, I'm playing this song. Tapping their toe nodding their
- 55:45head. You read these subtle body
- 55:47Movements and you learn how to read a crowd that helps me now.
- 55:50Like when I'm at a wedding, like a lot of times when I'm do DJ in
- 55:53a wedding, you know, normally a lot of people just put on a mix
- 55:55during cocktail hour. Yeah, I will actually mix music
- 55:59but the reason why I'm doing this so I could okay, I just
- 56:02played the freaking cup song from Pitch Perfect singing
- 56:05along, we're gonna get some Anna Kendrick shit with her over
- 56:07there. Okay.
- 56:08He's singing along to this one, you know.
- 56:10So I kind of read what they're doing and I kind of I'm setting
- 56:12them up. Like they don't know it but I'm
- 56:14like I'm paying attention to. Wow, your response.
- 56:16Okay, that That went over flat. Okay, I'm not going to get into
- 56:19that bag tonight, you know, but he read these little things.
- 56:22So DJing is about like, baiting these traps and like reading the
- 56:26crowd. Be like, okay, that's not going
- 56:29to work tonight. Okay?
- 56:29That killed last night. But tonight, it's not going to
- 56:31because this crowd isn't even feeling this.
- 56:32So don't worry about that. Where can I get, you know, and,
- 56:35and knowing the hits and it's great, but then how can I make
- 56:38it mine? How could I take them because?
- 56:40Like I know that this is going to work this they're not ready
- 56:45for, but how do I get them there?
- 56:47And taking them on that Journey, taking on that ride and it's
- 56:50really difficult now. Like, right now music is so
- 56:53tough because everyone is on Spotify or so, everyone's on
- 56:58their own Sub, Sub Sub sub genre of music with their customized
- 57:02playlist that sent to them by this company.
- 57:04Yeah, yeah. So there's no longer unifying
- 57:06music out there like what music of the past 10 years.
- 57:09Will you play at a wedding 10 years from now?
- 57:13For the past 10 years. Play it.
- 57:16I don't know like 50 Cent Candy Shop.
- 57:18Okay, that's more than 10 years ago.
- 57:20Yeah, that oh, oh shit. Really.
- 57:22Oh my God, why did I grow up? Oh okay.
- 57:29Hmm. Ten years ago you and also you
- 57:32set out a wedding so like yeah, yeah.
- 57:34Yeah. But that being said, weddings
- 57:35these days our weddings have changed too.
- 57:37Yeah. I mean, like people feel like
- 57:39the old-school wedding is you did it because you were expected
- 57:41to for your family now. Everyone's like nah we're going
- 57:43to turn like weddings are like they'll do a little bit of the
- 57:48traditional bow and Grandma and Grandpa leave with turn out.
- 57:50Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 57:51Yeah. If the WAP is not on, I'm not
- 57:53coming but that's also not 10 years ago what saint J.
- 57:58You're right though like I mean, yeah, basically it's like the
- 58:02Bruno, Mars has some of the some of the dell and slow jams.
- 58:05There's probably a couple country jams that I'm not
- 58:07familiar with but I mean like, but as far as like, pop music,
- 58:10it's tough. Yeah.
- 58:12Real tough. Because again, like even what
- 58:15was the song of the summer? You know what I mean?
- 58:16Like, even if you didn't listen to radio back in the day, you
- 58:19were still aware of and it would that would have a response to
- 58:23it. Yeah.
- 58:23Like probably I would say, probably like song of last year.
- 58:25Yeah. Fucking right.
- 58:26From Drake. Something from the take care of
- 58:30Especially really danceable, you're not replaceable, it's
- 58:34vibing. But when you say 10 years ago,
- 58:37just wait city girls, so they come and just one of the best.
- 58:41Yeah, city girls pack it up was 10 years ago.
- 58:45No, that wasn't that long ago. Are you sure?
- 58:46Yeah, I feel like no city girls was like just pretty covid but
- 58:52it's within 10 years. That's true though.
- 59:02Especially I mean like sorry like artist.
- 59:04You're right, like, some artists will kind of hop on Trends so
- 59:08you only like hear of it in the moment because of the trend but
- 59:12you didn't stick to it. So it's not memorable.
- 59:14I told this to my son the other day.
- 59:15I'm like you. Okay, you spend $15 and you have
- 59:18every song ever made at the tip of your fingers.
- 59:21I spent $15 because I heard one song on the radio and I was
- 59:24going to take a chance that I like the whole album but I
- 59:27bought that for $15 every song All The Way.
- 59:30We'll do it front to back new every groove of it.
- 59:33Yeah. You listen to it.
- 59:34You like don't like it next. Yeah, you're not invested in
- 59:37your music. No.
- 59:38Problem is because it's become disposable.
- 59:39Because what I would save up for and get one think I would get
- 59:43that one album. You just that's a song.
- 59:45Yeah. Every song ever.
- 59:47Yeah, that's true. That, that has changed a lot
- 59:50with streaming. That's a really good point
- 59:52because like yeah when you would buy like a CD maybe you didn't
- 59:55like that one song in that CD or like there were several songs
- 59:58that you didn't like the sea but you were the best.
- 1:00:00First it? Yeah, that's like you.
- 1:00:02You like you open the part where it showed you all the lyrics and
- 1:00:06you were like playing it back and forth and you're like, all
- 1:00:07right. Did I get that right now?
- 1:00:08I miss that. To let me go back.
- 1:00:10You were like memorizing, the lyrics, exactly.
- 1:00:13And now it's just, yeah. It also helped people get
- 1:00:17exposed to music. I mean, like, there's songs that
- 1:00:19are big on Tick-Tock because they're good for 15 seconds.
- 1:00:23Yeah. But beyond that you play are
- 1:00:24liking the speed versions now. Yeah.
- 1:00:27Yeah, a lot of that has happened but I mean like, but Get that to
- 1:00:31translate when everyone's just in it for a little bit.
- 1:00:33It's really difficult to control the crowd in that regard and
- 1:00:36like normally when I do it, it's through Nostalgia.
- 1:00:39Because anything new doesn't work.
- 1:00:41Yeah. Like I'm only 25 people, really?
- 1:00:44Yeah, it like, that is kind of, I mean, that's also what
- 1:00:46tick-tocks basically doing. Now, I am not very active on
- 1:00:50Tick-Tock to be able to speak too much on it, but, like
- 1:00:52everywhere. I'm yeah, I like that.
- 1:00:54But like, to that point, I mean, they're throwing back Nostalgia
- 1:00:57tracks all the time now, and speeding them up to some degree,
- 1:01:00or Slowing them down or whatever.
- 1:01:02Iding, some type of VoiceOver because it's getting people's
- 1:01:04attention because of the Nostalgia part well.
- 1:01:07And even that Spotify, there was an article written Spotify for
- 1:01:10the first time ever. The older music was getting more
- 1:01:14strings than the newer music. It's so the whole game.
- 1:01:18Yeah yeah I like you know So I feel about the 90s but yes about
- 1:01:35the 90s, I have a bring back my techno music like I love my
- 1:01:39techno music. That's like my playlist was your
- 1:01:4190s technology. What are you talking about?
- 1:01:43You talking like what is love, the hataway's and all that.
- 1:01:46So like these and stuff we know. So I was more into like DJ baby
- 1:01:50boy and okay DJ you know all those stuff like DJ loopy, DJ
- 1:01:55all that stuff but like yeah I like those that was my techno.
- 1:02:00Back in the day Frank's right? Maybe.
- 1:02:04Yeah, they're break. I still love breakbeats.
- 1:02:06I am a break. Beat die-hard fan till the day.
- 1:02:08I die. Got a lot of a lot of like your
- 1:02:12old music getting remixed into breakbeats.
- 1:02:15Yeah, but those guys are yep. I remember that era.
- 1:02:20So when I started raving in Supermarket
- 1:02:38the Next Generation, these kit and they were good, they were
- 1:02:42good. I remember I remember that spot.
- 1:02:45Literally like 20 years ago, they still rent that out like I
- 1:02:49can Well actually because I still can't believe it like run
- 1:02:52down. This is the Mexican spot.
- 1:02:53A front wasn't that the people that started Molinos was
- 1:02:56running, I don't know that, but I had no light because the front
- 1:03:00was the Mexicans father, because I remember I did I did because I
- 1:03:03did some parties in the back with like, Rudy love jr.
- 1:03:05And them. And I want to say, they ended up
- 1:03:07opening Molinos, or if it wasn't that, it was another another
- 1:03:10really good spot. I love.
- 1:03:11Ali knows about to go get some of that when I'm done.
- 1:03:15Actually. Yeah, give me a Paratha.
- 1:03:18Yeah. Unfortunately they even Well,
- 1:03:20they're not related. Never mind that Molino stock
- 1:03:22area. That's not related to actually
- 1:03:23know what. What?
- 1:03:25Yeah, yeah. But they closed the East Wing.
- 1:03:26Yeah, it's gonna be oh, gee location.
- 1:03:28Yeah. But I mean yeah.
- 1:03:30That locations pretty good. They play.
- 1:03:32They also play some of the jams. Yeah.
- 1:03:34And it's right next to Horrors Bakery.
- 1:03:35Yeah, never a bad style of their press lettuce.
- 1:03:41Like you guys are like over here talking about these so I can't
- 1:03:5090s, Mexican pop jams and like all this stuff like you're
- 1:03:54hearing one is your hearing like Shakira you're hearing all these
- 1:03:58people and you're just like yeah this is a spot for me.
- 1:04:05So you're saying like it's harder now to try to get some of
- 1:04:09the audience to engage in your having a lean, a little bit more
- 1:04:11on Nostalgia tracks. I feel like that's kind of been
- 1:04:14my Lane a little bit just to try and bridge that Gap.
- 1:04:17I mean I could try and go new new but again everyone is so
- 1:04:21fractured that even people that say oh I like house which one of
- 1:04:25the 27 different genres and then the like oh I like disclosure
- 1:04:31it's like oh and I would play some and then like I've never
- 1:04:34heard this one. One.
- 1:04:34I'm like how do you know like everyone's taste.
- 1:04:37It's so specific that and and a lot of and hand in hand with
- 1:04:42that people are entitled as fuck because everything's so used to
- 1:04:48being at their fingertips and like I can have this on the two
- 1:04:50seconds. Why can't you do it right now?
- 1:05:04That because I love making fun of that because every time I
- 1:05:08always see that the videos on Rails and stuff that is always
- 1:05:11like when you're a DJ and this Here Comes This, Bitch play Bad
- 1:05:15Bunny, we did that to Mark and I like fucking hounded him to the
- 1:05:19outro. There's a DJ crooked trays
- 1:05:21called bad. Yo quiero Bad Bunny you play
- 1:05:23that song for our outro today? Yeah it's a club break and like
- 1:05:30in the traditional New York club break style but yeah they did a
- 1:05:34Like, it's hysterical and perfect because when I get the
- 1:05:37request, this is the song that I play.
- 1:05:40So how do you feel when somebody says that to you?
- 1:05:42How do you feel when someone now goes like, play this song to
- 1:05:45your point? Because back to that comment,
- 1:05:47right? Like people are so entitled now.
- 1:05:49Like we're actually. It depends on where I'm at.
- 1:05:51Yeah, like it's really Case by case because I have some places
- 1:05:55where I'm playing and I'm like let me do what I'm going to do
- 1:05:59and I never like to be a jerk about it but there's sometimes
- 1:06:03in places where Like I was playing at one spot, the other
- 1:06:07night and the spot has a expectation of what the music
- 1:06:10should be. Like that guy comes up to me and
- 1:06:12says the place is not dead right now.
- 1:06:14True play this. Can't do it man, man.
- 1:06:18Well I'm not gonna spend my money here anymore.
- 1:06:20I'm like okay but like like what do you want me to like you're
- 1:06:24not side of my checks. I'm like, why you got to be an
- 1:06:25asshole to me. I'm like you get like this.
- 1:06:35Something really good like as a DJ, when you get booked at a
- 1:06:38venue in a venue saying this is the vibe we're looking for.
- 1:06:41So you got to play this and you can't feel out your crowd
- 1:06:44anymore. You can't do the stuff that you
- 1:06:45got. So passionate when you were
- 1:06:47talking, there's levels to it though.
- 1:06:49I mean like I mean even that like I mean, every night I do is
- 1:06:52different, I mean, like right now, Wednesday nights.
- 1:06:55I'm at Rock Island, I'm doing all 90s 2000s night.
- 1:06:58So whatever I want to do. It's typically a lot of hip-hop
- 1:07:01but I'm open up to do whatever. Thursday's, I'm at Doma, I'm
- 1:07:06doing a lot of like disco vibey. New disco, new R&B Funk groovy
- 1:07:10stuff, kind of because they wanted to be house based, but
- 1:07:13they want a little bit of a throwback Vibe on Thursdays and
- 1:07:15I'm like, yeah, I could absolutely have a blast doing
- 1:07:17it. Yeah.
- 1:07:18But I do, you know, get into some of the sing along East off,
- 1:07:20you know, just so everyone catches that Vibe and you know
- 1:07:23and it's balancing what people know with what people don't
- 1:07:26cause you don't want to alienate people.
- 1:07:27So just figuring that out and then Fridays.
- 1:07:29I do adult skate at Carousel where I'm playing like
- 1:07:31old-school zap and Roger and all this fun stuff in the cats are
- 1:07:34out there with their Roll Bounce.
- 1:07:35And like, so I got three nights that are completely different
- 1:07:38and I'm like it depending on where you come.
- 1:07:39See me like I have couples that I can.
- 1:07:42We see you? I'm like what you see is not
- 1:07:44going to be what you're gonna get if you book me for your
- 1:07:46wedding. Yeah, but if you want to see me
- 1:07:48like turn everyone up a pump house, I'll be there this week,
- 1:07:50you know? So like every gig is different
- 1:07:53and I approach it that way and I tell everybody I'm like I do a
- 1:07:57lot of everything but like I became a go-to guy in town for
- 1:08:00like it was a who was it? The toasters there a throwback?
- 1:08:04Ska band old-school, Ska band like oh we book them possible
- 1:08:08in? No it's not.
- 1:08:09Okay, I was like what there are still people that are big into
- 1:08:13it but they were a band from the 70s that have been around
- 1:08:16forever and they're like, we don't have anyone to open
- 1:08:18locally carbon. Do you open?
- 1:08:20Yeah, like date would Damian. Marley played Riverfest.
- 1:08:23I got to open for them, Damian Marley, like so, like I fall
- 1:08:28into these Lanes, I'm like, oh, you want to do a rockabilly
- 1:08:30night? I could do it all rockabilly
- 1:08:32night. People your versatile.
- 1:08:35I love going into those rabbit holes, and finding, all this
- 1:08:37obscure stuff. I mean, like, and I like taking
- 1:08:40things to stuff, like, I mean, I got asked to do a masquerade
- 1:08:42party and this was a while ago, and I didn't tell them what I
- 1:08:46was doing, but I did it. And literally for the opening,
- 1:08:49two hours of the night, I played all covers of songs.
- 1:08:53So to play up the mask, yeah, it's someone else doing that
- 1:08:56song and then I like and some of the people that were in the god
- 1:09:00at me like dude, that freaking genius.
- 1:09:02Yeah. But like, you were, you were a
- 1:09:03brand Again, just like how can you connect that and how can you
- 1:09:08do something? So I love theme and Concepts and
- 1:09:11kind of going above above people's expectations that and
- 1:09:14as a DJ, I nerd out on stuff, but half the time when I'm DJing
- 1:09:17like I'll do something clever. Yeah, that 95% of the club
- 1:09:21doesn't get but I see that one first that.
- 1:09:22Okay. I see what you did.
- 1:09:23Yeah, you clever. You clever.
- 1:09:30Yeah, I love that stuff. So I mean like it's reaching out
- 1:09:33for those things. But yeah, I can I could be an
- 1:09:36asshole about apparently. It's funny over the years.
- 1:09:39I've been told I look like I am asshole, like they're like
- 1:09:44everyone. I'm like, I've had interviews
- 1:09:46with people in this and that like I am so intimidated by you.
- 1:09:49When I see you. Like, I'm like really do.
- 1:09:51I yeah, I got really get that a lot once upon a time, I was
- 1:09:59probably more of a jerk about it.
- 1:10:01I'm not gonna lie. I was a real jerk back into what
- 1:10:05don't know if you were there that night when I shut off the
- 1:10:07music for some people, he shut off the music.
- 1:10:10Oh, you're gonna have to tell them that tell us why.
- 1:10:16So Wednesday nights t.g.i. W, Wednesday night's Rock Island
- 1:10:20was one of these nights where I'm like, we do what we want and
- 1:10:23we're gonna get you to party but we're gonna do it in our terms
- 1:10:25and we're not doing and and Wednesdays is a big service
- 1:10:28industry night. So the big thing was we were
- 1:10:29playing me party music. That wasn't the music that
- 1:10:32everyone was going to have to. Here, all weekend long, you know
- 1:10:34what I mean? Like, we could turn up but then
- 1:10:36it's not like, oh God, I'm gonna have to hear this 17 times in
- 1:10:39the next three days. Yeah, so we actually used to
- 1:10:43print off pages and put them on the flyer.
- 1:10:44I put them all in the tables and stuff and I was like, one, let
- 1:10:48us do our job where the DJ's. Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:50To if you don't know her don't touch her on the Dance Floor.
- 1:10:54We had a lot of people and we were we were dicks about this
- 1:10:58was kind of like this was like 15 years ago.
- 1:11:00So I know a lot of people are a lot more aware, but we were on
- 1:11:02that like, Real, heavy. I'm like, dude.
- 1:11:05Girl, we had, we had a great mix and everyone to come out and
- 1:11:07have fun. My favorite part about that
- 1:11:09night was like at 10:00, I would start at 10:05.
- 1:11:12The dance floor is full. It was none of this pretentious.
- 1:11:14Like I feel nervous, I got to get drunk first before I could
- 1:11:16do that. Like, people ready to go and
- 1:11:18just cut loose. Yeah, so we had Rules of
- 1:11:21Engagement and but anyways, I remember there was one time
- 1:11:23specifically this dude comes up and I forget what it was, I
- 1:11:28think was Dynamite, who was that I would Dynomite.
- 1:11:35They all came from the same Dynamite that one, maybe I
- 1:11:39don't. It was Dino.
- 1:11:39Cyrus up. No, no, no.
- 1:11:41That's wrecking ball. Anyways, whatever the song was,
- 1:11:50it was a song that was that you. If you turned on the local pop
- 1:11:54station, we're going to hurt three times an hour.
- 1:11:56You know what I mean? It was like the heavy rotation
- 1:11:58song at that time and I'm like, listen, you probably not going
- 1:12:02to happen. Yeah yeah exactly.
- 1:12:04Okay five minutes later sees dude come up.
- 1:12:08His man comes up. Hey Max you get that I'm like
- 1:12:10yeah probably not gonna happen tonight my man sorry man, it's
- 1:12:13not the vibe here. Yeah, ten minutes later girl
- 1:12:16comes up, she pushes cleavage together.
- 1:12:21Listen, I told you, man. I told his man.
- 1:12:24It's not gonna happen, man. Yeah, so dude comes back up
- 1:12:28later, he's like, but why can't you play my song?
- 1:12:30I'm like, dude. Stop the music, dude, I told you
- 1:12:35that's not going to happen here. This is my night.
- 1:12:37I'm gonna do what I do. There's a jukebox up front in
- 1:12:40the building. Go fucking find it.
- 1:12:42Put a dollar in it cause you ain't even offered me a dollar.
- 1:12:44You're just saying, fuck you playing my song.
- 1:12:46Go put a dollar in the Jukebox. Listen the song and when you
- 1:12:48come back I'll buy your table and around, okay.
- 1:12:51But until then get the fuck out, I love that.
- 1:12:54And I literally waited for them to leave like no music playing
- 1:12:57no music played like, like, That was the day.
- 1:13:04I mean like a stand by it but I was a dick.
- 1:13:07Oh shit. That's hilarious though.
- 1:13:08But yeah, I'm like so what? It's treacherous waters, you
- 1:13:13know and and for that reason, I get why people want to do like
- 1:13:16fuck you. I'm going to do what I want and
- 1:13:17but I also get why that's tough for some people to swallow.
- 1:13:21So my thing was always like straddling that line.
- 1:13:24But yeah, okay, this is what, you know.
- 1:13:26Okay, went too far. Come back, come here.
- 1:13:32Most of the music that I play has pop sensibility.
- 1:13:35I'm not going like hardcore this or hardcore that I'm still
- 1:13:38playing everything that's generally palatable, you know
- 1:13:40what I mean? I'm not trying to like like you
- 1:13:44know, I'm not going to go too far with any didn't give a
- 1:13:46direction? So within that, everything's
- 1:13:48fair game. Yeah and that's what I love to
- 1:13:50do is bring people together through music so just trying to
- 1:13:52figure out it's harder and harder to do that these days but
- 1:13:55that's ultimately what I love to do.
- 1:13:57Yeah. When I get married I'm going to
- 1:13:59make you as made, put you as my DJ with Don't just to tell you
- 1:14:03right now, my whole family listened to ratchet music when
- 1:14:07we say ratchet, Knuck, If You Buck got a really good remix
- 1:14:12with that right now, I want to listen to it, I want to rock
- 1:14:17those beats underneath, I have to laugh.
- 1:14:21When you see me you're gonna be like, oh there she is, she go.
- 1:14:30So on the same tone of like, you know, music and figuring out the
- 1:14:34crowd, but also figuring out what you like Emily asked
- 1:14:37earlier. We never really got to know the
- 1:14:39answer. What is it that you like to
- 1:14:41play? If you had to choose, right, we
- 1:14:43heard you say you're very versatile which is amazing.
- 1:14:46And it sounds like you love to live in that because like it's
- 1:14:48fun for you, you get to fall into.
- 1:14:50These are traps. If you could pick.
- 1:14:53What would you say? Is something that you love to
- 1:14:54play? Or what is something that your
- 1:14:57if you could? What would, what would What
- 1:14:59would that be Funk and soul Funk, and soul, and soul is like
- 1:15:03the core of what I do. Like every every other genre
- 1:15:06that I listen to still has to have soul.
- 1:15:09Like, soul is my thing, like that's a big reason why I don't
- 1:15:12like, never really got down with a lot of the like what I would
- 1:15:15call them under the new brand of EDM.
- 1:15:18It didn't have the soul. It's like formulaic build drop,
- 1:15:21repeat, build drop, repeat like that kind of stuff.
- 1:15:23I'm like, but but if it how students got that, right vocal
- 1:15:27and it just just touches on those Souls strings.
- 1:15:29You saw Like that's have a good vocal in that like look like
- 1:15:32look. I feel you.
- 1:15:33I understand. Yeah.
- 1:15:36So that's my Baseline. But ya know what do I love the
- 1:15:38most like the funk consult the classics and the new stuff too.
- 1:15:41I mean, but like yeah, I'll listen to Al Green James Brown,
- 1:15:44you know, Sam Cooke. That stuff all day long.
- 1:15:47Can you go? Okay, tell us like a new artist
- 1:15:51today that is a little Funk and soul.
- 1:15:53My you are trying to get us on Mayer.
- 1:15:55Hawthorne my oh yeah he's probably like an We all got to
- 1:16:00put that down right now. He hasn't suffered that right
- 1:16:02now as a side project it's called tuxedo and Tuxedo was a
- 1:16:06little bit more funky. But yes, Mayer, Hawthorne you
- 1:16:10will hear me play. He's probably the artist I play
- 1:16:12the most from when I'm doing a dinner somewhere or like people
- 1:16:17don't know it but I'm playing him a lot.
- 1:16:19It's probably is probably my most played artist.
- 1:16:21Yeah. Just from because he's got just
- 1:16:23funky stuff that it's versatile. They like who I'm grooving.
- 1:16:27I don't know this song but it's yeah, it's right.
- 1:16:29It's just the right Tempo. It's just the right, not too
- 1:16:33in-your-face but just enough and it just puts good energy in a
- 1:16:36room. So his Baseline is Beats and the
- 1:16:38structure of it is good and then what he does on top of it is
- 1:16:41just tasty. He's the new blue-eyed soul, I
- 1:16:43love tasty, I do like him. I have a, the mix that he did
- 1:16:47for like a BBC Radio that I'll play in the car every once in a
- 1:16:51while. Like yeah, we're going to have
- 1:16:55to check that out. You heard that here.
- 1:16:57So, you know, as we flip the Into a little bit, we've gone to
- 1:17:00get to know you a little bit more, we've gotten to get to
- 1:17:03know your taste and the tasty tracks that you play.
- 1:17:05Can you tell us a little bit more about like some upcoming
- 1:17:07projects or events that you're working on?
- 1:17:11And and then we'll kind of do another set of things and wrap
- 1:17:15up there. Oh boy, so I'm actually starting
- 1:17:18a new company. So I've got, I've been doing DJ
- 1:17:22carbon so I'm kicking off a new company going through right now.
- 1:17:26I'm not going to say the name because I don't have the rights
- 1:17:28to it just yet. So but basically focusing on
- 1:17:32employing other, DJs and also doing rentals lights, sound all
- 1:17:37kinds of bells and whistles, you know, recording photography,
- 1:17:43real estate. But but no, like just working on
- 1:17:48kind of developing that business.
- 1:17:51A lot of people have a need for things and over the years, I've
- 1:17:55just become that guy where someone's like, I need someone
- 1:17:58could, you know, do you know, somebody can make Animals.
- 1:18:01You do, mariachi band. I want a Mortal Kombat arcade
- 1:18:05machine at my birthday party Rita entertainment.
- 1:18:08So, yeah, I'm basically becoming a booking agent for that because
- 1:18:11I've got all those connection I have for so long.
- 1:18:13So, you know, my family would love you right now, because
- 1:18:15we're looking for stuff like that.
- 1:18:16Also might be a chi in which saw is super expensive.
- 1:18:19Yes, oh my God. Like it's stupid expensive.
- 1:18:22There's only two. Yes, like it's just so
- 1:18:25expensive. It's like, but even in trying to
- 1:18:28get them somewhere else. It's super expensive.
- 1:18:29Pensive anyway, sorry keep going.
- 1:18:31Yes, actually working on that as far as other things.
- 1:18:35So one of my, one of my favorite events from back in the day,
- 1:18:38used to do the series called refresh.
- 1:18:41I did a lot of high-end fundraisers, so it was like a
- 1:18:45hundred, two hundred dollar tickets, all your drinks are
- 1:18:48included. But what I loved about him was
- 1:18:49everyone got dressed up. Everyone came in looking nice
- 1:18:52feeling good. Before the night ever started,
- 1:18:54they everything was on point. So I approached the folks over
- 1:18:58at Abode venue and Old venue. Cannabis, yeah, I missed a great
- 1:19:03place and we had a great deal, worked out.
- 1:19:06But basically, I would take their Open dates because they
- 1:19:10were primarily doing weddings and private events.
- 1:19:12And like, if you got a date open within the next three weeks,
- 1:19:14I'll take it instead of you being closed and they would make
- 1:19:17a killing on money. And they, we just had a great
- 1:19:21agreement. But basically, what I would do
- 1:19:23is throw a party that was twenty bucks in advance, or 30 at the
- 1:19:26door, something like that, and dress code strictly enforced.
- 1:19:29No jeans, no sneakers, which you don't have that anywhere in
- 1:19:33Wichita, you can go to the nicest restaurant in town and
- 1:19:37get sat next to someone that's got their shirt sleeve shirts,
- 1:19:39shirts sleeves ripped off and like, cut off jeans, George
- 1:19:43Saint, you know what I mean? Like, I am not trying to be
- 1:19:47stuffy like that, but there's a time and a place where I like a
- 1:19:50level of decorum like that classy.
- 1:19:53So, we did. I threw a party that was like,
- 1:19:55okay, get dressed up, come out and we did I did one.
- 1:19:58Then I did a second one. We ended up doing one quarter
- 1:20:01for about four years, before a boat close.
- 1:20:03That it was just a great event where people come out.
- 1:20:05Look nice. Get done up and have a nice sign
- 1:20:07out. So I'm hoping to bring that
- 1:20:09back, trying to find the right spot for it.
- 1:20:12Other than that, getting ready for the summer, the pool party
- 1:20:16that I throw it wave. So, is that the foam party
- 1:20:20thing? No.
- 1:20:21So I was like, that's a fever. I said, was nothing there for a
- 1:20:24second. Sorry, I set up about 20
- 1:20:27inflatable pools that you can sit.
- 1:20:29I know you're talking about because Michelle was telling us
- 1:20:31about it and she brought a bunch of stuff.
- 1:20:33Yeah, it's yes. And she's always with the
- 1:20:35duckies the day she's supposed to come recorded on a Sunday,
- 1:20:37but she's like, I'm going to the pool party.
- 1:20:39Yes! Yes, she literally told ya we
- 1:20:41like had planned it to do it. She was like no no guys are big
- 1:20:44party and and so you know you told us what what you're
- 1:20:50planning on and everything. Can you give some advice from
- 1:20:54aspiring DJs looking into breaking to the DJ Industries or
- 1:21:00Yes, why are you doing it first? That's the question.
- 1:21:04You need to ask yourself a lot of people see dollar signs, and
- 1:21:08rock star lifestyle. I got a DJ when I was DJing,
- 1:21:11DJing wasn't cool. Like well wasn't cool, not only
- 1:21:14that, but man, I probably can respect on BJs because they're
- 1:21:17like you just only push play. Yes.
- 1:21:20And not only that but everyone thinks like you're a rock star
- 1:21:23and you do this. You dude, I got to load up all
- 1:21:24my gear. The girl that was hitting on me
- 1:21:26took three other dudes home before I got a chance, She's
- 1:21:30ready to go then. Yeah, load up, man.
- 1:21:36So yeah. No.
- 1:21:36I mean like, don't DJ because it's cool and I think the other
- 1:21:41thing is like, it depends on what you want to do with it.
- 1:21:44Really if you want to be a working, like I consider myself
- 1:21:47to be a working DJ. And I think the big part of that
- 1:21:50is I can't be the DJ until I'm a DJ.
- 1:21:55Like everyone wants to be the DJ, not just be a DJ, just be
- 1:21:58one like Like work. Hmm.
- 1:22:01Keep your head down? Stay humble.
- 1:22:02Like I've had a lot of people like it's gotten weird now.
- 1:22:06Like people like, dude, your celebrity you're this, you're
- 1:22:08that like, it's really fucked up because my kids, like, why are
- 1:22:11you on my snap friends? Snapchat?
- 1:22:13Like this is weird. Why does my friend follow you?
- 1:22:18Why? Like yeah I want to go hang out
- 1:22:21with my friends and they were like hey we what's your dad up
- 1:22:24to tonight? We want to go out.
- 1:22:25Like I'm like so clean. You can't tell us anything
- 1:22:31challenging here. Hold on.
- 1:22:34Sorry. So we're going to do something a
- 1:22:36little different than what we've typically done to wrap up.
- 1:22:39We want to do something. That's kind of a little bit,
- 1:22:41like a lightning round. So these next as yes.
- 1:22:44These - five questions. Yes.
- 1:22:47This next set of five questions will be a little more like on
- 1:22:50the car. Tell us about it.
- 1:22:52So Emily was about to ask you about yeah name.
- 1:22:56Any particular a little a particularly Lee challenging
- 1:23:00gigs or venues. You have play.
- 1:23:02And how did you overcome it? Oh, I know, lightning round.
- 1:23:07I mean that's supposed to be lay me.
- 1:23:09I got to think about that. Okay, okay, okay, we'll give you
- 1:23:11an easy one or you. What's your favorite conspiracy
- 1:23:14theory that was going to be that?
- 1:23:19I mean that I believe or just like this, your favorite
- 1:23:22favorite could do, whatever I want to smack the Flatiron Earth
- 1:23:25out of people. You believe.
- 1:23:42Oh God, for me, it's Bigfoot. I believe in aliens but I don't
- 1:23:50think that's like a conspiracy anymore.
- 1:24:059/11 was an inside job. I don't know.
- 1:24:09I don't know. Yeah, I know I've seen didn't
- 1:24:13kill himself, I know that. Yeah, the future of the industry
- 1:24:22evolving. It's probably not in a good way.
- 1:24:28I think things are going to get more and more.
- 1:24:29Virtual things are getting more and more digitized than AI is
- 1:24:32going to take over large. Extents.
- 1:24:35Yeah, I think it's going to be really hard.
- 1:24:37I think, I think the only time you're going to see real people
- 1:24:38in front of people is when people want to Nostalgia Vibe.
- 1:24:41Oh shit. Yeah, damn.
- 1:24:43Okay. Let's see.
- 1:24:44What is your favorite thing to do after work?
- 1:24:49Sit in my car for about like 20 minutes.
- 1:24:52When I get home, like I don't even get out the car that
- 1:24:54decompression in the car. That's a bit.
- 1:24:58It's a good vibe. Yes, it has in your car.
- 1:25:02Yeah, that's me. After I do weddings, actually.
- 1:25:05It's why I don't do as many more.
- 1:25:07Yeah. Look, let me pull up the heat
- 1:25:10on. Leave the engine running.
- 1:25:11I'm just gonna sit here for a minute, those are the best.
- 1:25:18Sometimes, right? And so, even when I work remote
- 1:25:21and I had to leave my house for a second and then come back.
- 1:25:24I will sit in for 20 minutes and just chill.
- 1:25:26Yes, that is true. Okay, where do you see yourself
- 1:25:30in five years taking over the world?
- 1:25:34Love it, love it. I find a question final
- 1:25:36question. What color is Dusty's underwear?
- 1:25:40She's not wearing it, ha it was great to meet you.
- 1:26:06So we're really excited about that but you're not off the hook
- 1:26:09just yet. Come on, let's go.
- 1:26:13Let's go. This is Dusty, has the he's got
- 1:26:17to beat turn me up in the headphone.
- 1:26:20I'm just kidding. The beets coming, right?
- 1:26:44All right, jack. Come off the top.
- 1:26:50Yo, its game bread? You know, we got it out the
- 1:26:53bottle, it's the rum, it's bread bread.
- 1:26:55I don't know you saying, you want more wealth off the top.
- 1:26:58I'm a carnivore. I gotta check it on the mic.
- 1:27:02I get loose, I ain't spending the lemon.
- 1:27:04No sour face, but I got the juice.
