- 0:00Hello friends! Welcome back to Wonderfully Made,
- 0:04Bible Stories for Children. I'm so glad you're
- 0:08here. Last time, we learned about King Solomon.
- 0:13How God gave him wisdom, and how he became richer
- 0:17and more powerful than any king on earth. But
- 0:21sadly, Solomon's heart turned away from the Lord,
- 0:25and he began to drift. And because Solomon turned
- 0:29away, God warned that the kingdom would not stay
- 0:33the same forever. Today, we'll hear what happens
- 0:37after Solomon dies. Will Israel stay united?
- 0:41Or will the kingdom break apart? Let's begin.
- 1:00After many years of ruling, King Solomon died.
- 1:04And Solomon's son became king. His name was Rehoboam.
- 1:09The people of Israel came to Rehoboam with an
- 1:13important request. They explained that Solomon
- 1:17had worked the people very hard. They asked Rehoboam
- 1:21to be kinder and lighten the heavy work. Rehoboam
- 1:25didn't answer right away. Instead, he decided
- 1:29to ask for advice. Rehoboam first spoke with
- 1:34the older men, leaders who had served his father
- 1:38Solomon. The older men advised him to speak kindly
- 1:42to the people. They explained that if he served
- 1:45the people well, the people would stay loyal
- 1:48to him. That was wise advice. But Rehoboam didn't
- 1:55like it. Rehoboam went to his younger friends,
- 1:58men who had grown up with him, and his friends
- 2:02gave him a very different kind of advice. They
- 2:06encouraged him to speak harshly. They told him
- 2:10to prove that he was stronger than his father.
- 2:14They wanted him to show power, not kindness.
- 2:18Rehoboam listened to the wrong advice. When he
- 2:22returned to the people, he answered them proudly
- 2:25and harshly. He made it clear that he would not
- 2:29lighten their burdens. Instead, he would make
- 2:33things even harder. And when the people heard
- 2:40this, they were shocked. They realized their
- 2:44new king did not care about them. The people
- 2:48of Israel became angry. They decided they would
- 2:52no longer follow Rehoboam as king. And just like
- 2:56that, the kingdom began to split. Only the tribe
- 3:00of Judah stayed with Rehoboam. But the other
- 3:05tribes chose a different leader, a man named
- 3:08Jeroboam. Now Israel was no longer one united
- 3:13kingdom. It became two kingdoms, Judah in the
- 3:17south, ruled by Rehoboam and Israel in the north,
- 3:22ruled by Jeroboam. This was a very sad moment
- 3:26in Israel's history. And it happened exactly
- 3:30the way God had warned. God had said that because
- 3:34Solomon turned away, the kingdom would be torn
- 3:38apart after him. And now it was happening. Rehoboam
- 3:43wanted to fight and take the kingdom back. But
- 3:47God sent a message through the prophet Shemaiah,
- 3:50warning him not to go to war against his brothers
- 3:54the Israelites. So Rehoboam stopped. But Jeroboam
- 3:59also made a terrible choice. Jeroboam was afraid
- 4:03that if the people went to Jerusalem to worship
- 4:06God, they might return to Rehoboam. So Jeroboam
- 4:11made two golden calves and placed them in different
- 4:15cities. He encouraged the people to worship those
- 4:19instead of worshiping the Lord in Jerusalem.
- 4:22This was a great sin. Jeroboam did not trust
- 4:27God. Instead of leading the people toward the
- 4:31Lord, he led them away. And that's how the kingdom
- 4:36split into two kingdoms. One was called Judah,
- 4:40and the other was called Israel. This story teaches
- 4:52us something very important. Rehoboam lost the
- 4:56kingdom because he listened to pride instead
- 4:59of wisdom. And Jeroboam led the people into sin
- 5:03because he was afraid and wanted control. Let's
- 5:07think about this together. Have you ever refused
- 5:13to listen to good advice because you wanted your
- 5:16own way? Why do you think pride is dangerous?
- 5:26When you are in charge of something, how can
- 5:30you lead with kindness instead of harshness?
- 5:36What should we do when we feel afraid, like Jeroboam
- 5:40did? who listen, and who obey him. Pride breaks
- 5:53things apart, but humility helps people stay
- 5:57together. Thanks for joining me today. Next time,
- 6:03we'll hear about what happens in the northern
- 6:06kingdom of Israel, where people begin to follow
- 6:09idols and turn away from God. Will God give them
- 6:13warnings? Will they listen? We'll find out next
- 6:18time. Until then, remember, you are wonderfully
- 6:22made. Bye for now.
