- 0:00Speaker 1: Buds. The question mentoring these students a question that I
- 0:05Speaker 1: realize that every person is asking themselves, and that question
- 0:07Speaker 1: is am I who I think that I am? Because
- 0:10Speaker 1: we all think something of ourselves, we all but we
- 0:13Speaker 1: want to know is it true? So that question brings
- 0:18Speaker 1: a lot of people to Buds. And what's so cool
- 0:20Speaker 1: is that budz answers that question for people. Buds really
- 0:23Speaker 1: is a test of resiliency. There are people who walked
- 0:26Speaker 1: into Seal training far more capable than me, with mountains
- 0:29Speaker 1: of confidence, mountains of external stimuli that told them that
- 0:34Speaker 1: you belong here until the until Bud's training, until the instructors,
- 0:40Speaker 1: until their peers told them that they weren't.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's some possible.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Let me tell you what I believe.
- 0:47Speaker 2: What's your weakness is not your technique?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yes?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yes, don't think you.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Know the Impossible Life podcast and yes, sitting on a
- 1:00Speaker 3: winning lottery protector an idea that is fully formed, fully
- 1:04Speaker 3: understood that sticks.
- 1:06Speaker 1: This is the Impossible Life Podcast because Nick and I
- 1:10Speaker 1: are attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is
- 1:14Speaker 1: that nothing is impossible. So instead of using impossible as
- 1:18Speaker 1: an excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of
- 1:21Speaker 1: impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been
- 1:26Speaker 1: done before, that just means it's unexplored. If they tell
- 1:30Speaker 1: you it's too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Impossible as a default label used by uncourageous people unwilling
- 1:39Speaker 1: to take a risk. The real truth is this The
- 1:43Speaker 1: solution to any impossible task starts with this question if
- 1:47Speaker 1: I had to, what would it take.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Welcome to the Impossible Life podcast, where we say think
- 1:55Speaker 3: better and live the impossible. I'm here with my very
- 1:59Speaker 3: distinguished co host or are you like the talent?
- 2:02Speaker 2: I don't know what to call it? You, Garrett uncle back?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Sure, okay, sweet, Yes, we nailed that one, all right, Garrett,
- 2:08Speaker 3: So picking back up? Man.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I think we talked about this a lot in episode one,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and I think it's something that sounds like Star Wars
- 2:17Speaker 2: episode one.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I think, yeah, this will be a saga. It will
- 2:21Speaker 1: be more than nine episodes.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Oh man, Well, there we go. We're committed.
- 2:24Speaker 3: But I think one of the things about you is
- 2:27Speaker 3: we talked about what you've accomplished. Don't need to go
- 2:30Speaker 3: into that again. You can listen to the first episode
- 2:31Speaker 3: if you really want to hear it, but focusing specifically
- 2:34Speaker 3: on being a Navy seal, and I think what I
- 2:38Speaker 3: am very conscious of as a quote unquote mortal and
- 2:41Speaker 3: normal human being. For lack of a better analogy, I
- 2:44Speaker 3: know you hate that, but I think it's hilarious. Is
- 2:47Speaker 3: it's easy, and it happens in a split second for
- 2:50Speaker 3: someone to look at you and we see you on
- 2:51Speaker 3: the other side of your victory. You ran through your crucible,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you paid your price, and now you have a title
- 2:57Speaker 3: that you all, you know, bear some weight. As far
- 3:00Speaker 3: as being a Navy clo. I know it's a blessing anacurse,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and we can talk about that another time, but I
- 3:04Speaker 3: think it's easy. And what I want to explore is
- 3:06Speaker 3: I think it's easy for a normal a person who
- 3:09Speaker 3: hasn't done that to look at you and in a
- 3:11Speaker 3: split second, without even being aware of what's happening in
- 3:14Speaker 3: their thinking process, they just assume, well, look at Garrett,
- 3:17Speaker 3: he must be super super athletic, super aggressive. He had
- 3:21Speaker 3: this just he was just naturally, you know, had a
- 3:23Speaker 3: stronger will power, and he had all these things and
- 3:25Speaker 3: they ascribe all these attributes to you and they don't
- 3:28Speaker 3: know they're doing that. But I think in the process
- 3:31Speaker 3: of just making assumptions about why you were able to
- 3:33Speaker 3: do what you were doing, they are giving a somewhat
- 3:37Speaker 3: damning verdict of themselves and giving themselves an excuse to
- 3:40Speaker 3: aim lower. And I don't think people realize that's happening,
- 3:44Speaker 3: but we do it all the time with people when
- 3:46Speaker 3: we're confronted with somebody that's achieved something that we either
- 3:50Speaker 3: think is cool or we would love to have been
- 3:52Speaker 3: able to do and don't think we can. And so
- 3:55Speaker 3: you talk a lot about resiliency and being that being
- 3:58Speaker 3: so key to what you've accomplished, and even so much
- 4:01Speaker 3: as answering it as to what it is for the
- 4:03Speaker 3: measure of a man.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And you go into resiliency.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So what is resiliency, Well, resiliency is a funny word.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Most people aren't familiar with it or really think a
- 4:12Speaker 1: lot about that. What is common to people, A common
- 4:15Speaker 1: term is confidence. So we'll start there. Confidence is, hey,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I've got you know, I hit a ball. I'm good.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I feel good about hitting baseballs, like I'm confident in
- 4:24Speaker 1: my baseball skills. I got up in front of my
- 4:26Speaker 1: class and talked I'm confident in my speaking abilities until
- 4:31Speaker 1: until then you then your confidence wanes a little bit. Right,
- 4:36Speaker 1: So a lot of confidence is based off of external stimuli.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Do people tell me I'm good or whatever the thing is,
- 4:43Speaker 1: whether it's being able to hit a ball or speaking ability,
- 4:46Speaker 1: whatever the thing is. I have confidence when external stimuli
- 4:50Speaker 1: tells me that I do. I feel like I love,
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm good. I feel good about myself as far as
- 4:55Speaker 1: like good looks when I look in the mirror, right
- 4:57Speaker 1: and I like what I see? Yeah, that is confident.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It's resiliency is so different.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Nick.
- 5:03Speaker 1: When I was growing up, I didn't like this, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: you know what, it made me better. People called me
- 5:07Speaker 1: arrogant all the time. My recruiter getting into the maybe
- 5:11Speaker 1: he called me arrogant. I would say very often that, like,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I know, this is what I know. I would tell
- 5:17Speaker 1: people that, and people's response would so often would be
- 5:21Speaker 1: well how do you know? And they would like, well,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you're just so arrogant, you just believe this. Well that
- 5:27Speaker 1: was looking back, it's so funny that that's what it
- 5:30Speaker 1: was labeled. That resiliency was labeled as arrogance. And you
- 5:33Speaker 1: know what, it can they can cross lines and we'll
- 5:36Speaker 1: get into that maybe, but let's go, let's go to
- 5:39Speaker 1: my recruiter for a second.
- 5:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I told him, I said, here's what I'm going to do.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I'm going to becoming Navy seal.
- 5:43Speaker 2: This is what I want to do.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I need you to write up the contract for me.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It's a very matter of fact and very certain.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And for people that don't know, how old are you
- 5:50Speaker 2: at this point, thirty?
- 5:51Speaker 1: No, I was nineteen in my recruiter's office, and I'm
- 5:56Speaker 1: very matter of fact. I said, I know, this is
- 5:58Speaker 1: what I'm supposed to do. You were a skinny kid.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You're seeing you're about six two, is right. I'm six
- 6:02Speaker 1: one By the time I was, I was skinny my
- 6:04Speaker 1: freshman year. I was six to one my freshman year
- 6:06Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty five or one hundred and forty
- 6:08Speaker 1: five pounds, and then graduated high school sixty one about
- 6:12Speaker 1: two hundred pounds.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Oh okay, so you're a little bit more of it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: No, I was. I was thicker. I was gonna by
- 6:16Speaker 1: the time I left for Buds, I was one hundred
- 6:18Speaker 1: and eighty five. I started leaning down because you had.
- 6:20Speaker 2: To run so much. But that's not like huge by
- 6:23Speaker 2: any stretch the imagination.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I was. I was you know, there was nothing
- 6:26Speaker 1: about my build necessarily that would make you think that
- 6:29Speaker 1: I wasn't supposed to be a seal. But my recruiter
- 6:32Speaker 1: had an experience, and he told me the stories of
- 6:34Speaker 1: all the people that had come in his office and
- 6:35Speaker 1: told him, well that they were going to be a
- 6:38Speaker 1: seal and never and didn't make it. And he made
- 6:41Speaker 1: sure that I knew all those people. And so he's
- 6:43Speaker 1: looking at me and he gave me he's the words
- 6:46Speaker 1: he said to me I'd heard so often, which was
- 6:48Speaker 1: how how do you know? Because I would say I
- 6:50Speaker 1: know that I'm supposed to do this, and then they
- 6:52Speaker 1: would say, well, how do you know? And how do
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know something? How do you know something if you
- 6:58Speaker 1: haven't been told it, if you don't see it, if
- 7:00Speaker 1: you don't have if you don't have the reflection, you
- 7:03Speaker 1: don't have people telling you this is what you are,
- 7:05Speaker 1: how would you know?
- 7:07Speaker 3: I mean, I think that that's where it comes down
- 7:10Speaker 3: to a belief, But I don't even know where you
- 7:11Speaker 3: begin to develop something that's really hard to know.
- 7:14Speaker 2: To believe is different, right.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yes, yes it is. What was really cool about the
- 7:18Speaker 1: Buds program is the people that attracts is very interesting
- 7:22Speaker 1: something I discovered when I was mentoring a bunch of
- 7:26Speaker 1: young students, guys wanting to become seals and some of
- 7:29Speaker 1: them later on in my military career. The free time
- 7:32Speaker 1: I did have, I would spend time mentoring guys, and
- 7:35Speaker 1: and mentoring those guys, I really learned a lot about
- 7:37Speaker 1: the just the thought process of getting there. And I
- 7:41Speaker 1: learned so much about myself and mentoring those guys. Something
- 7:43Speaker 1: I discovered spending time with these guys on their path
- 7:46Speaker 1: to becoming seals was that every man, and really every
- 7:49Speaker 1: person is asking themselves the same question, and it is
- 7:52Speaker 1: this question makes me think of the Matrix. It's the
- 7:56Speaker 1: question that drives.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You everything makes you thinking.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I can say a lot of things do make me
- 8:00Speaker 1: think of the matrix. There, yes, if behind you on
- 8:04Speaker 1: the bookcase, there is a philosophy book book based off
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the Matrix that I have read. So yes, I
- 8:09Speaker 1: am a nerd on this topic. Rabbit Hole coming back buds.
- 8:15Speaker 1: The question mentoring these students a question that I realized
- 8:19Speaker 1: that every person is asking themselves, and that question is
- 8:22Speaker 1: am I who I think that I am? Because we
- 8:24Speaker 1: all think something of ourselves, we all but we want
- 8:27Speaker 1: to know is it true. So that question brings a
- 8:31Speaker 1: lot of people to Buds, and what's so cool is
- 8:34Speaker 1: that Buds answers that question for people. Buds really is
- 8:36Speaker 1: a test of resiliency. There are people who walked into
- 8:39Speaker 1: seal training far more capable than me, with mountains of confidence,
- 8:44Speaker 1: mountains of external stimuli that told them that you belong
- 8:48Speaker 1: here until the until Bud's training, until the instructors, until
- 8:53Speaker 1: their peers told them that they weren't. It was really
- 8:56Speaker 1: interesting one of the and we're kind of jumping around
- 8:58Speaker 1: and we'll bring it all back, but I'm right now.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm just like, all these things are these thoughts are
- 9:02Speaker 1: coming back to me, and I want to talk about
- 9:04Speaker 1: them for a second. One of the things that really
- 9:06Speaker 1: was striking in Buds when you're going through is peer reviews.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And peer reviews you really like people tell you what
- 9:13Speaker 1: they really think of you. And some guys who had
- 9:16Speaker 1: resilience would like be bottom five or like really low
- 9:19Speaker 1: on the list, and it would say, like, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: guys don't think you're going to be a good CEO.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Guys don't think they would want to work with you,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and those some of those guys were like whatever, I
- 9:26Speaker 1: don't care what any of y'all think, because I know
- 9:28Speaker 1: who I am. And then there were other people who
- 9:30Speaker 1: had been very talented, people who had once been highly rated,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and then they got bottom five because you know, they
- 9:37Speaker 1: did something dumb and they just broke them like they
- 9:40Speaker 1: could never come back from it. And it's a lack
- 9:42Speaker 1: of resiliency. So now let's talk about what resiliency is
- 9:45Speaker 1: compared to confidence. So we know confidence comes from external stimuli.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Where does resiliency come from, Well, resiliency comes from internal stimuli.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And the last example that I want to give real quick.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I know I keep teasing the last example I want
- 9:58Speaker 1: to give real quick of resiliency before we kind of
- 10:01Speaker 1: define it and give people handles to put on it
- 10:04Speaker 1: and bring it into their own lives. There's a really
- 10:06Speaker 1: cool interview of Elon Musk. This was from a few
- 10:10Speaker 1: years ago, and he's sitting there with the guests. He's
- 10:14Speaker 1: sitting there with the host, and the host is talking
- 10:16Speaker 1: about Neil Armstrong and some of the other people that
- 10:20Speaker 1: Neil Armstrong is a personal hero for Elon Musk, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: Neil Armstrong had said, like, hey, privatization of space travel
- 10:26Speaker 1: is not the way, and you can tell he's like
- 10:30Speaker 1: on the edge of tears. To have your hero tell
- 10:32Speaker 1: you like, I want to be like this person. I
- 10:36Speaker 1: want this person to applaud me. I want this person
- 10:39Speaker 1: to be proud of what I've done, and for that
- 10:41Speaker 1: person to look at you and tell you like what
- 10:43Speaker 1: you're doing is wrong, and then to continue on top
- 10:46Speaker 1: of that. It brings me back to a quote from
- 10:51Speaker 1: Rudyard Kipling's poem If There's so many things in there,
- 10:55Speaker 1: but one of them is if you could lose it
- 10:57Speaker 1: all on a game of toss and begin again. That
- 11:00Speaker 1: is the test. To lose everything, or to have no
- 11:03Speaker 1: external stimuli, to have nothing that tells you that you
- 11:07Speaker 1: are enough, that you are capable, but to go for
- 11:10Speaker 1: it anyways. Where that comes from is within yourself. What
- 11:13Speaker 1: do you believe, not what do other people say? What
- 11:16Speaker 1: do you say about yourself? And what I decided at
- 11:19Speaker 1: a young age was even when in eighth grade, I
- 11:22Speaker 1: was six' one one hundred and thirty five, pounds super
- 11:25Speaker 1: like overly curly hair that looked like an afro BECAUSE
- 11:28Speaker 1: i was transitioning through. PUBERTY i was so, pale uncoordinated
- 11:33Speaker 1: at the, time and hadn't really become athletic yet and
- 11:36Speaker 1: people put me in so many boxes and all of
- 11:38Speaker 1: THEM i, said that's not, me that's not. TRUE i
- 11:40Speaker 1: know WHO i. AM i know Who i'm going to,
- 11:42Speaker 1: become even THOUGH i can't see. It SAID i Know
- 11:44Speaker 1: i'm going to be. THIS i Know i'm going to be.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That that's WHO i said THAT i. Was So resiliency
- 11:49Speaker 1: starts with who do you say that you? Are and
- 11:51Speaker 1: that's the hardest thing for people because they don't want
- 11:53Speaker 1: to define. That they want other people to define. Them
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's scary to look into yourself and try to pull
- 12:00Speaker 1: out who AM i going to?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Be, oh massively. WOW i think the thing that's interesting
- 12:04Speaker 3: about that question, is you, KNOW i don't think many
- 12:09Speaker 3: people if you said who are? You that's a hard you,
- 12:12Speaker 3: know you watch people stumble through their intros in business
- 12:15Speaker 3: settings or whatever it, is or the question that SOMETIMES
- 12:17Speaker 3: i get as a marketing consultant with, people you, know
- 12:20Speaker 3: within our, consultancy people will be, like what's your? Superpower
- 12:24Speaker 3: AND i hate that, question even THOUGH i have it
- 12:26Speaker 3: an answer to. It it's just it's not something that
- 12:28Speaker 3: people ask a. Lot and what you're talking about sounds
- 12:31Speaker 3: like who do you say you? Are, well everybody's saying
- 12:33Speaker 3: something about who they are all the, time, right everybody
- 12:36Speaker 3: has self, talk BUT i don't think a lot of
- 12:38Speaker 3: people are really aware of. IT i, mean you, said
- 12:41Speaker 3: you said a stat on self talk to me when
- 12:42Speaker 3: we've we've talked about, this because we've talked about this.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Before do you remember what that.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Was, well there's a lot of stats on self. Talk you,
- 12:49Speaker 1: know there's stats that would tell you people talk to
- 12:50Speaker 1: themselves at two hundred or four, hundred eight, Hundred and
- 12:53Speaker 1: there's another say that says two thousand words per minute
- 12:55Speaker 1: that people talk to themselves. Good the word the word
- 12:58Speaker 1: count is not significant. SIGNIFICANT i don't talk the. Fastest
- 13:01Speaker 1: there's people that talk faster than. Me there's people that
- 13:03Speaker 1: talk less words permanent than. Me you don't look at
- 13:06Speaker 1: a speaker or the value of audible content by a word.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Count so it doesn't really matter how many words per
- 13:12Speaker 1: minute you. Speak what matters is that you do and,
- 13:16Speaker 1: yes and it is happening all the. Time it's not
- 13:19Speaker 1: just a conversation with. Yourself so there's times when you're
- 13:21Speaker 1: like just talking with yourself trying to air out a.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Thought there's other times where you are really speaking and
- 13:27Speaker 1: this gets into a, deeper a deeper, Topic, nick where
- 13:31Speaker 1: who you are is connecting to your brain and you
- 13:35Speaker 1: can start telling YOURSELF i am, enough or you can
- 13:38Speaker 1: start telling YOURSELF i am not, enough, Right and that's
- 13:40Speaker 1: what where people get law the reason people struggle with, Resiliency,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Nick and you could this is kind of, metaphorical but
- 13:46Speaker 1: you could look at it this. Way people are afraid
- 13:48Speaker 1: of the. Dark and what DO i mean by? That
- 13:50Speaker 1: when you look into the space and an unknown space
- 13:53Speaker 1: that's dark and you can't see what's in. THERE i
- 13:56Speaker 1: mean if we went outside at night and we're looking
- 13:58Speaker 1: into a, shadow what you if you keep staring at
- 14:01Speaker 1: it long, enough what people are going to imagine is something,
- 14:03Speaker 1: dark something that would hurt. Them people are afraid to
- 14:06Speaker 1: walk into that. Space we have so much, dark unexplored
- 14:09Speaker 1: space within ourselves and people don't want to go in.
- 14:12Speaker 1: There they just want somebody to tell them what's in.
- 14:15Speaker 1: There and you have to, decide, LIKE i am going
- 14:17Speaker 1: to discover WHO i am And i'm going to define
- 14:20Speaker 1: WHO i. Am i'm not going to wait for other
- 14:22Speaker 1: people to tell it to. Me so resiliency really comes down, to,
- 14:25Speaker 1: like what are your core beliefs about yourself and what
- 14:27Speaker 1: are you going to? Decide and that comes from an
- 14:30Speaker 1: even deeper belief that you have the ability to do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: That because most people think that their life is, fixed
- 14:35Speaker 1: that who they are is, fixed that they don't have
- 14:38Speaker 1: any ability to write their own. Story i'm as smart
- 14:40Speaker 1: AS i am because that's the way that it. Is
- 14:43Speaker 1: and it's a lack of personal. Accountability it's a lack
- 14:45Speaker 1: of personal. Responsibility most people's deepest fear isn't just a
- 14:49Speaker 1: public speaking or being afraid of the, dark but it's
- 14:52Speaker 1: a fear of. Inadequacy it's a fear of, What, yeah
- 14:55Speaker 1: what IF i give all THAT i? Have what IF
- 14:57Speaker 1: i give one hundred percent and still? Fail and they
- 15:00Speaker 1: wouldn't know what to do at that point because most,
- 15:02Speaker 1: people and this is we're going way deep, Now, nick
- 15:04Speaker 1: because most people measure themselves by their, accomplishments not by
- 15:07Speaker 1: who they. Are to mastery to know, yourself that is
- 15:11Speaker 1: a great supreme accomplishment and resiliency will get you. There
- 15:16Speaker 1: but most people don't want to do that because they
- 15:17Speaker 1: are afraid to really test. Themselves buds attract so many
- 15:20Speaker 1: people because it is such a great, test and people
- 15:23Speaker 1: are asking themselves DO i know WHO i, am and
- 15:26Speaker 1: they come to buds to find the.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Answer, man you went exactly. Where so we've talked about,
- 15:33Speaker 3: this or maybe we. HAVEN'T i love cognitive behavioral. Therapy
- 15:36Speaker 3: it's something THAT i put a lot of weight into
- 15:39Speaker 3: AND i love reading about.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It so there's my kind of nerdy.
- 15:41Speaker 1: STUY i do.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Too and what you talked, them it's funny that we've
- 15:43Speaker 3: never covered that. Before what you touched on right, there
- 15:47Speaker 3: the challenge of. Resiliency And Tony robbins's a guy that
- 15:50Speaker 3: we both have immense respect for and he's been a
- 15:53Speaker 3: huge blessing and to help shape me in my life
- 15:56Speaker 3: From afar and he, says you, know people basically only
- 15:59Speaker 3: have two. Fears number one is that they're not, enough
- 16:02Speaker 3: and number two is that because they're not, enough they
- 16:03Speaker 3: won't be. Loved AND i think that is such a
- 16:05Speaker 3: beautiful way to sum it.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Up and you touched on, it AND i didn't.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Know that he says that that people have these two.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Fears but that's absolutely.
- 16:11Speaker 3: True oh, Yeah and that's, why as you, WERE i
- 16:13Speaker 3: was so glad that you went where you did because
- 16:16Speaker 3: the challenge of resiliency is you're, right you're facing that
- 16:18Speaker 3: abyss of, OKAY i have to be prepared to find
- 16:23Speaker 3: out THAT i could fail and if your outcome base
- 16:26Speaker 3: that is a very very hard thing to.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Do let me relate this to something that guys experience
- 16:31Speaker 1: in buds is kind of like an example of. Resiliency
- 16:34Speaker 1: WHAT i call it is the unknown distance. Run so
- 16:38Speaker 1: there's runs and. Buds there's runs in life right where
- 16:42Speaker 1: you know how far away the finish line, is and
- 16:44Speaker 1: then there are other runs that you don't know how
- 16:46Speaker 1: far away the finish line. Is so in buds you
- 16:48Speaker 1: have four mile timed, runs you know how far that,
- 16:50Speaker 1: is and people know what they're capable, of and people
- 16:53Speaker 1: will come into that run with confidence versus there are
- 16:57Speaker 1: other runs and buds that are not meant to be
- 16:59Speaker 1: time that are not meant to be can you run
- 17:02Speaker 1: this far this? Fast there are other runs that we're
- 17:05Speaker 1: going to take off running and we'll see who's still.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Here and what's the crazy part Is, Nick none of
- 17:11Speaker 1: those runs and, like as far as the pace and
- 17:13Speaker 1: the conditioning level really took more effort than what like
- 17:17Speaker 1: or ability than it took to pass a four mile
- 17:20Speaker 1: at the times that were, Required but it tested guys
- 17:23Speaker 1: in a different. Way there were guys Who i'm sorry.
- 17:26Speaker 3: To jump, in but for, reference for those of us
- 17:28Speaker 3: who haven't been THROUGH, buds and that's pretty much all of,
- 17:31Speaker 3: us what is a four mile timed? Run BECAUSE i
- 17:34Speaker 3: think in my, MIND i think you guys are just,
- 17:36Speaker 3: like if you're not doing five minute, miles you're out
- 17:38Speaker 3: of The, Navy and that's obviously not the.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Case, yeah it's not five minute, miles but you are
- 17:42Speaker 1: in pants and boots on the beach In cornado four.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Miles the times start at thirty two minutes right at
- 17:48Speaker 1: the end Of. Buds by third, PHASE i believe the
- 17:51Speaker 1: last time gate is twenty eight, minutes so seven minute miles.
- 17:54Speaker 2: At the, end, okay which is.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Good but there's a lot of high school kids out
- 17:58Speaker 3: there that are going seven minute.
- 17:59Speaker 1: MILES i tell, you that's achievable by ninety five to
- 18:02Speaker 1: ninety nine percent of, people, Right like a five minute
- 18:05Speaker 1: mile is not achievable by.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Everybody, YEAH i just want to give some context for
- 18:08Speaker 3: people who haven't been THROUGH, buds which is pretty much.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Everybody so you're saying that this four so you're running
- 18:13Speaker 3: at a slower pace than even the eight minute pace
- 18:16Speaker 3: that you guys.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Do for four.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Miles, yeah but it may be an eight minute pace
- 18:19Speaker 1: for eleven or twelve.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Miles, right, okay, okay so you guys may stick with
- 18:23Speaker 3: that four mile pace or.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And there's other ways to create. Pain you. Know sometimes
- 18:28Speaker 1: we'll run for a couple of miles and then there's
- 18:30Speaker 1: going to be like a beat down or get wet and,
- 18:32Speaker 1: sandy and then we'll keep. Running but here's what here's
- 18:35Speaker 1: What jack's people up standing at The you, know the
- 18:39Speaker 1: hardest thing about a thing is not doing the. Thing
- 18:41Speaker 1: it's the anticipation of the. Thing and so the, form
- 18:43Speaker 1: the hardest part of the form mile time run is
- 18:45Speaker 1: standing there waiting for the four mile time run to.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Start right once you're in, it it feels. Different, well
- 18:50Speaker 1: the anticipation pain before the four mile time run is.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Small the anticipation pain before the unknown distance run is
- 18:59Speaker 1: as big is your. Imagination and that's what crushes most
- 19:02Speaker 1: people because they're, wondering, like how bad could this possibly?
- 19:05Speaker 1: Be and they put they look at the. Instructor and
- 19:09Speaker 1: some of the instructors who would lead the unknown distance
- 19:11Speaker 1: runs were really good, runners but they would look at
- 19:13Speaker 1: them and be, like, man those guys can run insanely
- 19:15Speaker 1: fast and faster than. Me and, yeah some of those
- 19:18Speaker 1: guys were great, runners BUT i would look at them
- 19:19Speaker 1: and just know that they're. HUMAN i also knew THAT
- 19:21Speaker 1: i was one of the slowest runners in the class,
- 19:23Speaker 1: anyways and just, said you know, What i'm still gonna be.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Here i'm just gonna keep. Going and SO i KNEW
- 19:28Speaker 1: i was already signed up for. Pain but other guys were,
- 19:30Speaker 1: SAYING i don't know If i'm, enough and the unknown
- 19:33Speaker 1: distance run would break them in the same way that
- 19:35Speaker 1: a lack of resiliency, does because they're not willing to,
- 19:38Speaker 1: Test they're not willing to look into the dark and
- 19:41Speaker 1: see what's in. There they don't know how to go
- 19:43Speaker 1: over that. LINE i had guys in my class quit
- 19:46Speaker 1: who could run twice as fast as, me guys who
- 19:48Speaker 1: were amazing, runners and they. Would some of those guys
- 19:51Speaker 1: quit on unknown distance, runs not because they couldn't keep
- 19:54Speaker 1: pace with the, class but because in their mind they
- 19:56Speaker 1: made it into something bigger than it.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Was man and throw away all that because buds is
- 20:01Speaker 3: what week or hell week's week.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Five, yeah and that's what we were talking. About the unknown.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Distance, well, well there's unown distance runs all throughout.
- 20:08Speaker 2: First oh, There oh, okay, OKAY i didn't know that. Right,
- 20:10Speaker 2: See i'm learning man for. Soon IF i if they
- 20:12Speaker 2: start allowing old dudes and The navy, seals, Man i'm
- 20:14Speaker 2: ready from this.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Podcast thank you're a little past the age.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Waiver, okay there was no need to go. There you
- 20:18Speaker 2: could have humored.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Me but, anyways uh, So, SO i, mean so that's
- 20:24Speaker 3: insane to see that guys would walk. AWAY i, mean
- 20:26Speaker 3: so you're saying that a guy might walk away at
- 20:28Speaker 3: like four miles or five miles in which is which
- 20:32Speaker 3: is crazy because they've already run how Many how many
- 20:33Speaker 3: miles do you run In Hell?
- 20:34Speaker 1: Week In Hell, week you'll run over two hundred miles
- 20:37Speaker 1: and so on that same, topic you can talk about
- 20:41Speaker 1: guys quitting in strange circumstances to make, it to help
- 20:44Speaker 1: just to get To hell. Week you're a tough, dude,
- 20:46Speaker 1: Right you've already been through four weeks of first. Phase
- 20:49Speaker 1: they're a tough dude just to get. There you're you're not.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Weak and there are lots of guys who quit in
- 20:56Speaker 1: the first twenty four hours Of hell. Week and you
- 20:59Speaker 1: could look at everything that happens in the first twenty
- 21:01Speaker 1: four hours of hell week and, say how is this
- 21:03Speaker 1: really any harder than what you've already done in the
- 21:05Speaker 1: last four? Weeks and, this and now we're going to
- 21:07Speaker 1: talk about something else that relates to, this which is
- 21:10Speaker 1: how people. Quit this is where people. Quit In, Buds,
- 21:13Speaker 1: nick people will, Quit so take the take like a
- 21:19Speaker 1: good athlete or somebody that you, know and they can make.
- 21:22Speaker 2: It through one day At.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Buds but where people quit, is you, know when you
- 21:26Speaker 1: finally finish that, evening the instructors are done messing around
- 21:29Speaker 1: with you at like seven or, eight then you have
- 21:31Speaker 1: all this other you, know stuff that they tell you
- 21:33Speaker 1: you got to clean and, do and then you go
- 21:35Speaker 1: clean your personal stuff and then your class oic musters
- 21:38Speaker 1: you and tells you what you, know it's basically midnight
- 21:41Speaker 1: at this, point and tells you what the schedule is
- 21:43Speaker 1: for the next. Day and we, have you, know the
- 21:45Speaker 1: next evolution for day two starting at four in the.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Morning so we as a class are meeting at three
- 21:51Speaker 1: thirty and it's midnight right. Now what happens is people
- 21:54Speaker 1: say not THAT i can't do this again, Tomorrow they
- 21:57Speaker 1: SAY i can't do this for one hundred and seventy
- 21:58Speaker 1: nine more, days and so that's where people. Quit and you,
- 22:01Speaker 1: know when you're doing the unknown distance, run it's not
- 22:04Speaker 1: THAT i have to keep this pace for. FOREVER i
- 22:06Speaker 1: just have to keep this pace for right. Now but
- 22:08Speaker 1: people quit because they, say, well what IF i, can't
- 22:10Speaker 1: and then they and then they eliminate themselves, Anyways so
- 22:13Speaker 1: resiliency is all starts with a way of thinking that
- 22:17Speaker 1: SAYS i, Can Like Henry ford, says whether you think
- 22:20Speaker 1: you can't or you think you, can't you're. Right. YEAH
- 22:23Speaker 1: i was fortunate enough to hear that very young in,
- 22:25Speaker 1: life AND i believed. It some people hear that quote
- 22:28Speaker 1: and say that's, stupid, right those people don't have very much, resiliency.
- 22:31Speaker 2: And they're, Right, yeah they're. Right it is stupid for.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Them so it's self, fulfilling self.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Fulfilling it's.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Beautiful, SO i, mean there's so much there and that's.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Phenomenal AND i love that we're talking about going to
- 22:44Speaker 3: the core of who a person is BECAUSE i think
- 22:45Speaker 3: that's a very personal topic THAT i don't feel a
- 22:48Speaker 3: lot of.
- 22:48Speaker 1: People nobody wants to be told. That nobody wants to
- 22:51Speaker 1: be told, that, really what you're capable of has to
- 22:53Speaker 1: do with who you say that you are and what
- 22:56Speaker 1: you believe about. Yourself people want to people want to, say,
- 22:59Speaker 1: WELL i can't be this because nobody gave me.
- 23:02Speaker 3: That so the onus look in the mirror That that's
- 23:05Speaker 3: what's tough about this is that you take absolute ownership
- 23:09Speaker 3: for everything in your, life and and that is a very.
- 23:11Speaker 1: CHALLENGING i didn't give myself a lot of. Mercy. NICK
- 23:14Speaker 1: i kind of backed myself like into a corner with
- 23:17Speaker 1: going Into buds Because i'm, like, MAN i have everything
- 23:19Speaker 1: that IF i, fail it's totally on. Me. Yeah, Yeah
- 23:22Speaker 1: i'm not like one of the guys who is blind
- 23:25Speaker 1: and climbed To Mount everest or has no legs and
- 23:27Speaker 1: Climbed Mount. Everest like you, know if you fail on,
- 23:29Speaker 1: that no one's going to like beat you up about.
- 23:31Speaker 1: It like IF i had failed At, BUDS i deserve
- 23:33Speaker 1: to get beat up about it BECAUSE i had everything
- 23:35Speaker 1: that was required right to begin.
- 23:38Speaker 3: And you knew, that and that, WELL i think that's
- 23:39Speaker 3: an incredible thing because you were told that you, didn't
- 23:42Speaker 3: but you knew that you. Did so let's put this
- 23:44Speaker 3: back in my. Shoes i'm too old.
- 23:45Speaker 2: To join The. Navy.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Seals so you, know while you've crushed my dream on this,
- 23:49Speaker 3: PODCAST i will eventually get over it BECAUSE i have.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Resiliency AND i never have told Myself i'm an Ify,
- 23:54Speaker 3: Seal but IF I i do want to develop more
- 23:57Speaker 3: resiliency BECAUSE i, see.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Well here's let me let me something real. Quick some,
- 24:01Speaker 1: people like people would be uncomfortable making a statement like
- 24:05Speaker 1: where if you said and people think, like, oh you
- 24:06Speaker 1: can't say that in front Of, Garrett like you defend.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It if you, said like right, now LIKE i THINK
- 24:10Speaker 1: i could have made it through. Buds other people, like
- 24:12Speaker 1: well you. Can't you, know you don't know. That you
- 24:14Speaker 1: can't say. That it's exactly HOW i felt at nineteen years,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Old like if you said that right, Now, GARRETT i
- 24:19Speaker 1: THINK i could make it through. Buds you are entitled
- 24:22Speaker 1: to think. That, Yeah like it doesn't even matter IF
- 24:24Speaker 1: i agreed with you or. Not, right you can think. That,
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah and at NINETEEN i was LIKE i can't think,
- 24:28Speaker 1: this AND i had everyone trying to tell me you
- 24:30Speaker 1: can't think that.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Way but that's the empowering.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Thing so if somebody out there realizes the, value AND
- 24:35Speaker 3: i hope they, DO i, mean you've talked about it at,
- 24:37Speaker 3: length and it is tied to core. Values how do
- 24:40Speaker 3: we go from? It you, know it's, resiliency it's self.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Talk we've touched on those ARE i feel like those
- 24:45Speaker 3: are the two key parts of what we're talking about.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Here how does someone go from, MAN i never heard
- 24:50Speaker 3: of this TO i need to develop this BECAUSE i
- 24:53Speaker 3: realize the value of what this is going to bring
- 24:55Speaker 3: to my.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Life, Yeah so if we want to make it, real
- 24:57Speaker 1: tangible for, people it starts with. Awareness you need to
- 25:00Speaker 1: have an awareness of what resiliency. Is and it's not
- 25:02Speaker 1: just confidence on. Steroids. Right it starts with who do
- 25:06Speaker 1: you say that you?
- 25:06Speaker 3: Are?
- 25:06Speaker 2: What self? Talk? What?
- 25:08Speaker 1: Yeah and what do you believe about? Yourself? Right self
- 25:10Speaker 1: talk influence is that self talk is not your. Identity
- 25:13Speaker 1: self talk influence is your, identity and we'll talk more
- 25:16Speaker 1: about that and other, episodes but it starts with who
- 25:19Speaker 1: do you say that you? Are that is the core of.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Resiliency so at, first it's, awareness knowing what resiliency is and, deciding,
- 25:25Speaker 1: HEY i want to have. Resiliency if you want to have,
- 25:27Speaker 1: it you need to determine that you want to have, it,
- 25:30Speaker 1: Right and that's so it starts with awareness and understanding it.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Right so let's say THAT, i you, know decide WHO
- 25:37Speaker 3: i am AND i, go you know, What i'm a
- 25:38Speaker 3: turd Because i've had you talked about confidence and it
- 25:41Speaker 3: coming from the. Outside for a lot of, PEOPLE a
- 25:43Speaker 3: lot of people have grown up not having people that
- 25:46Speaker 3: believed in. THEM i, MEAN i was very fortunate that
- 25:48Speaker 3: my parents growing up telling ME i could do anything
- 25:49Speaker 3: and that they love. ME a lot of people will
- 25:51Speaker 3: come from terrible. Backgrounds so if you, have if you're
- 25:55Speaker 3: if you stop and you get this awareness you're talking,
- 25:57Speaker 3: about and you, Realize, MAN i believe leave a bunch
- 26:00Speaker 3: of things about myself that if someone else said them about,
- 26:03Speaker 3: Me i'd want to punch them in the. Face but
- 26:05Speaker 3: ACTUALLY i say it to myself all the. Time where
- 26:07Speaker 3: do you begin to you, know where do you go from?
- 26:09Speaker 3: There BECAUSE i think there are there are a lot
- 26:11Speaker 3: more people in.
- 26:12Speaker 1: THAT i feel like a really great MAD tv sketch
- 26:15Speaker 1: From Bob newhart where he just, says stop. IT i
- 26:18Speaker 1: tell people, like if you're saying negative things about, yourself stop.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It if you're not believing positive things about, yourself stop.
- 26:24Speaker 1: It you're not helping. Anyone you're making yourself you are relieving.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Yourself you'd rather sit with the pain of poor performance
- 26:34Speaker 1: than the pain of. Inadequacy they don't Want people don't
- 26:36Speaker 1: want to challenge, Themselves and it's WHY i like to challenge.
- 26:39Speaker 1: PEOPLE i THINK i am WHERE i am at this
- 26:41Speaker 1: point in my life BECAUSE i lean into the. CHALLENGE
- 26:44Speaker 1: i seek. CHALLENGES i want to be. Tested people who
- 26:47Speaker 1: don't want to be tested won't become very much like
- 26:50Speaker 1: resiliency starts WITH i want.
- 26:52Speaker 2: THAT i want to be that, way, Right, SO i,
- 26:55Speaker 2: mean it's as simple as.
- 26:56Speaker 3: That it's a, decision right to stop what you're leaving
- 27:00Speaker 3: about yourself and what you're saying right, then so now
- 27:02Speaker 3: what you got to replace it with? Something you can't
- 27:03Speaker 3: just leave?
- 27:04Speaker 1: It so the next, step, so, okay you've decided to
- 27:06Speaker 1: quit calling yourself a loser And i'm going to call
- 27:09Speaker 1: myself a. Winner and then you go out there and
- 27:12Speaker 1: you try to be a winner and you fail. Again
- 27:14Speaker 1: and that's most people's journey on. Resiliency, WELL i Guess
- 27:17Speaker 1: i'm not that right because they thought it was as
- 27:19Speaker 1: easy as WELL i said it, right and, no it
- 27:21Speaker 1: doesn't work that. Way if you believe, it then it
- 27:24Speaker 1: doesn't matter what happens, Anyways like if you know that
- 27:28Speaker 1: you are, capable if you know who you, are even
- 27:31Speaker 1: when you get external stimuli that says differently you, can
- 27:34Speaker 1: doesn't change your. Belief that, is how do you hold
- 27:37Speaker 1: on to a belief that everyone says you're, wrong that
- 27:39Speaker 1: what's going on around you says you're. Wrong you HAVE i,
- 27:42Speaker 1: mean it is just a core. Belief and then as
- 27:44Speaker 1: you continue to hold on to, that and you keep
- 27:46Speaker 1: pressing and you keep, pushing then you'll prove. It most
- 27:49Speaker 1: people give up just, before you, know on that unknown distance.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Run they give, up not at the point of. Failure
- 27:55Speaker 1: they give up at the point of, discomfort.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Right AND i, think you, know going back to a
- 27:59Speaker 3: tone another Great Tony robbins, quote he, says the moment
- 28:02Speaker 3: of decision is where true life change. Happens And i'm
- 28:05Speaker 3: listening to you talk about, that And i'm getting chills
- 28:07Speaker 3: Because i'm thinking about the person who's trying to change.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It And i'm so glad you touched on the failure
- 28:11Speaker 3: because it's not like you listen to this podcast and
- 28:14Speaker 3: now you know.
- 28:15Speaker 1: En, yeah just, hey you, know go wear A t
- 28:17Speaker 1: shirt that says you're a winner and tell everyone you're
- 28:19Speaker 1: you're a, winner and then now everything you do will
- 28:21Speaker 1: be a. Success not the.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Case but you've got to be stubborn about being first
- 28:26Speaker 3: of all, aware, like, hey, wait this is one of
- 28:28Speaker 3: those situations where NOW i have to be.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Somebody you may have all the resiliency and believe that
- 28:32Speaker 1: you're a, winner and you may go on for ten
- 28:34Speaker 1: years and keep. Failing at that point you need to, Realize,
- 28:38Speaker 1: OKAY i have the core belief of being a, winner
- 28:40Speaker 1: but what AM i?
- 28:41Speaker 2: Missing right then you start looking at your.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Strategy but if you still have that, sense, yeah you're
- 28:45Speaker 1: gonna change You what AM i? Missing AM i missing?
- 28:47Speaker 1: Other is there equipment THAT i? Need is there knowledge
- 28:50Speaker 1: THAT i? Need you're gonna find. It but with that
- 28:52Speaker 1: resilient mindset you'll find. It. Right but if you don't
- 28:55Speaker 1: have that resilient, mindset you'll just say, no it's not
- 28:58Speaker 1: meant for. Me you, know IF i, had IF i
- 29:00Speaker 1: had failed my first time AT, buds it would not have.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Changed and there's a lot so there is some luck
- 29:04Speaker 1: involved IN, Buds LIKE i could have gotten injured and
- 29:06Speaker 1: just got dismissed from. TRAINING i failed pool comp and
- 29:09Speaker 1: they decided to keep me where they. KICKED i think
- 29:11Speaker 1: there were twelve of us that failed pool comp and
- 29:13Speaker 1: nine of them they. Booted it kept me and a couple.
- 29:15Speaker 1: OTHERS i could have gotten booted and it would have
- 29:18Speaker 1: Taken and there are guys that come. Back Michael Mansur
- 29:21Speaker 1: medal Of honor winner jumped on a, grenade saved his team's.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Life he quit his first time AT. Buds most people
- 29:26Speaker 1: don't know. That, wow what do you? But and so
- 29:29Speaker 1: he was twenty five years old on their first deployment
- 29:31Speaker 1: when he did. That he had. Failed he's probably nineteen
- 29:33Speaker 1: or twenty his first time AT. Buds because you go

- 30:15Speaker 3: of developing.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Resiliency, yeah what what do you believe about? Yourself? Nick
- 30:19Speaker 1: that's where it. Starts if you don't believe that you
- 30:22Speaker 1: have a, destiny you're not going to have. One if
- 30:24Speaker 1: you don't believe that you're, capable you're.
