- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:11The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast where I give you insight,
- 0:14awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting
- 0:17and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode,
- 0:20I am answering a question from Kylee,
- 0:23and this is about jealousy
- 0:26amongst siblings.
- 0:28So a very appropriate and universal struggle.
- 0:32So Kylee,
- 0:32thank you so much.
- 0:33And I,
- 0:33when I responded to her after she emailed,
- 0:35my cousin is also named Kieley,
- 0:37spelled differently,
- 0:38but
- 0:39I have a cousin,
- 0:40Kieley,
- 0:40so I have always loved that name and it's nice to have your email,
- 0:43Kylee.
- 0:43Thank you.
- 0:44So let me read parts of the email and then we'll dive in together.
- 0:48Your podcast has helped me so much in my parenting.
- 0:50I have 5 kids
- 0:51and my middle child is a girl who is 7,
- 0:54and she's my spiciest.
- 0:56She's currently in play therapy,
- 0:58and we have seen so many benefits from play therapy.
- 1:00Her birthday is in September,
- 1:02her older sister's birthday in October,
- 1:05and older brother's birthday in November.
- 1:07For her siblings' birthdays,
- 1:09she has complained,
- 1:10thrown fits,
- 1:10and whined all day.
- 1:12She has spent time in her room while they opened presents because
- 1:14she was throwing a fit that they got presents and she didn't.
- 1:18From a parenting perspective,
- 1:19I want her to be allowed to have her feelings,
- 1:21but also she can't ruin her siblings' turn
- 1:23to have their ability to open presents and special day.
- 1:27It has been such a puzzling thing for my husband and I.
- 1:29We understand she's jealous,
- 1:31but we don't know what to do with this behavior and
- 1:33also help our other children to have a good birthday.
- 1:36Any thoughts are appreciated.
- 1:38OK,
- 1:39so Kylee.
- 1:41You did not
- 1:42clarify
- 1:43with a brood of 5.
- 1:46You did not communicate when you said middle girl
- 1:49if she is true middle,
- 1:50meaning 3 of 5.
- 1:53I'm assuming so,
- 1:54but I don't necessarily know that that's true.
- 1:56So I'm going to operate on the assumption
- 1:58that it would be the 3rd of 5,
- 2:00and
- 2:01I hope that that's accurate because there are 3
- 2:03middle children in a set of 5 children.
- 2:06So
- 2:07I'm going to go with it's the
- 2:09true middle.
- 2:11Girl of
- 2:137.
- 2:14True middle child.
- 2:16In a family of 7
- 2:18with 5 kids,
- 2:20she is going to be the quintessential forgotten kid
- 2:24as far as birth order goes.
- 2:26And no parent wants to hear that,
- 2:28and every parent tries to split attention evenly,
- 2:31and every parent does their best to make
- 2:33sure that every child feels loved and appreciated.
- 2:36It's just the way that it is.
- 2:39Middle child of 3,
- 2:40middle child of 5.
- 2:42It's going to be the quintessential forgotten child.
- 2:47So what happens is we understand birth order.
- 2:51She's going to fight for attention
- 2:53because she has to.
- 2:56And it's going to make it even worse
- 2:58when kids that she siblings that she feels already get more attention than her
- 3:03get
- 3:04special attention.
- 3:05Now,
- 3:06a birthday isn't,
- 3:07you know,
- 3:07you,
- 3:08Kylee,
- 3:08just decided I'm making this oldest child day.
- 3:11Like it wasn't that kind of special attention.
- 3:13It was,
- 3:13it's the day you were born,
- 3:15so we're celebrating.
- 3:16But for your middle girl.
- 3:19She already feels that the youngest get attention because they're young,
- 3:22the oldest get attention because they're old,
- 3:25and with that goes
- 3:27youngest are needy,
- 3:28oldest are accomplished,
- 3:29youngests
- 3:30are
- 3:31still
- 3:33capable of doing some things and need assistance.
- 3:36Oldest are always stronger,
- 3:37better,
- 3:37smarter,
- 3:38faster,
- 3:38whatever.
- 3:39So she is literally stuck
- 3:41in between two older siblings that are.
- 3:44Getting rewarded and attention and acknowledgement
- 3:48for being
- 3:49things that she can't be.
- 3:51And then she has younger children
- 3:52that
- 3:54are getting attention and
- 3:56energy and whatever
- 3:57because they need it.
- 3:59And she just feels stuck,
- 4:01I suspect.
- 4:03And so
- 4:04I agree with you 100%.
- 4:06She
- 4:07needs to have her feelings,
- 4:09but she also can't ruin her siblings' birthdays.
- 4:12But this is,
- 4:13I believe,
- 4:14a thing that gets addressed
- 4:16longer term,
- 4:17bigger picture,
- 4:18not just on
- 4:19birthdays.
- 4:20And so here's what I mean by that.
- 4:22It would be really impactful
- 4:25for your husband and you to take turns
- 4:29on one on one time with your kids.
- 4:31Specifically your
- 4:337 year old,
- 4:34but really all of them.
- 4:36So,
- 4:36work it into your schedule,
- 4:3915 or 20 minutes
- 4:41each kid each week
- 4:43with
- 4:43you and your husband.
- 4:45So when your husband is with 4 of them,
- 4:48you do 15 or 20 minutes with 1 of them.
- 4:51And you rotate through and,
- 4:52and yes,
- 4:53I,
- 4:53I do understand the time commitment that that would require with 5 kids.
- 4:56You know,
- 4:57you're looking at each of you giving
- 4:59an hour and a half or so
- 5:01to one on one time
- 5:03with your kids each week.
- 5:04So
- 5:05you and your husband are 3 hours in
- 5:07a week to spending 20 or so minutes with each kid individually.
- 5:11But what needs to happen
- 5:13is,
- 5:14especially your three middles,
- 5:16but your 7-year-old.
- 5:18100%.
- 5:19They need to be made to feel
- 5:22that they are getting
- 5:24attention and time and energy and relationship.
- 5:28And it's just for them.
- 5:30The more kids you have,
- 5:31the more the kids occupy themselves and do things together
- 5:35as they have to.
- 5:37And you're way outnumbered.
- 5:38I mean,
- 5:39everyone jokes that when you go from 2 to 3 kids,
- 5:41like then all of a sudden you're outnumbered and
- 5:43you lose ranks because it's 3 against 2.
- 5:45Well,
- 5:45you all are 5 against 2.
- 5:46So I mean,
- 5:46this,
- 5:47this is a huge deal for y'all.
- 5:49But what the goal is,
- 5:51is every single child gets individual time with both parents each week.
- 5:56And they get to decide what happens
- 5:58if they want to play,
- 5:59if they want to talk,
- 6:00if they want to throw a ball,
- 6:01if they want to do a puzzle,
- 6:02if whatever it is,
- 6:04because what you're trying to establish is
- 6:07nothing is going to interfere and interrupt
- 6:10with this one on one time with you.
- 6:12That will,
- 6:13as a long term strategy,
- 6:15help and ensure that all of your kids feel that they get time with each of you.
- 6:20Here's the other component,
- 6:21as far as the birthday goes.
- 6:23You can proactively address this for next year.
- 6:26So,
- 6:27you know,
- 6:27maybe in summer of next year,
- 6:29you can say,
- 6:31OK,
- 6:32spicy seven year old,
- 6:33I don't know,
- 6:33I don't know her name,
- 6:34so we'll,
- 6:35we'll go Jane.
- 6:36OK,
- 6:36Jane,
- 6:38last year,
- 6:38I know it really bothered you when your brother and sister had their birthdays.
- 6:43We're going to make your birthday special,
- 6:45and we're going to make all the rest
- 6:46of your brothers and sisters' birthdays special too.
- 6:49Tell me what you would like to do for your birthday.
- 6:52And let her really have some input and some
- 6:56involvement in what's going to happen for her birthday
- 6:58and then set very clear expectations.
- 7:01Last year you really didn't like it when your brother and sister opened presents,
- 7:05but each of you gets presents on your birthday.
- 7:08So if you choose to open presents on your birthday,
- 7:11you choose for them to open presents on their birthday without you getting mad.
- 7:16Everyone gets to open presents on their birthday.
- 7:18If you choose to open them on yours,
- 7:20then you're choosing for them to open them on theirs and
- 7:23you not get mad about it.
- 7:26And what you're doing long in advance
- 7:28is helping her work through those feelings
- 7:30and prepare herself to be more regulated.
- 7:33Also continuing in play therapy,
- 7:34I think the jealousy and the rivalry will naturally sort itself out
- 7:38because really what needs to happen is she
- 7:39needs to have a much higher self-confidence.
- 7:42Middle children are often very low in self-confidence
- 7:45because they're ignored and forgotten,
- 7:47so they really don't know who they are.
- 7:48They don't really have an identity.
- 7:50So she's going to do a lot of identity work,
- 7:52a lot of self-esteem work.
- 7:54And as she does that,
- 7:55she will naturally not feel as much rivalry with the siblings.
- 7:58So I think to a degree it will sort itself out by
- 8:01next year as well as you addressing it ahead of time.
- 8:04And then my final thought is
- 8:06we absolutely want to validate her feelings.
- 8:08It's really hard
- 8:09when other people
- 8:11are the center of attention.
- 8:13It's really hard when you feel like
- 8:15you wanted something and
- 8:16you had to watch your brother and sister open presents and not you.
- 8:19It's,
- 8:20it's really upsetting.
- 8:21You,
- 8:22you really felt irritated.
- 8:24Validate her feelings as much as possible.
- 8:26Those are all valid and real feelings.
- 8:28It's the behavior that needs limits.
- 8:31So
- 8:32you really were disappointed that it was your brother's turn to open presents.
- 8:36But it's your brother's birthday,
- 8:38and
- 8:40it's his turn to open presents.
- 8:43So we're just setting clear expectations.
- 8:46We're reflecting feelings,
- 8:47validating how she feels,
- 8:49and then also trying to,
- 8:51as much as possible,
- 8:52engage in one on one time.
- 8:54I think
- 8:55as she starts to figure out who she is.
- 8:58It will be easier to engage with her in really positive ways
- 9:04because a child that doesn't have any sense of who
- 9:06they are and doesn't have a sense of identity,
- 9:08it makes it really difficult to form relationships.
- 9:10And that would be true
- 9:12with you as her parents,
- 9:13with her siblings,
- 9:14with
- 9:15friends.
- 9:16If a child really doesn't have a sense of who they are,
- 9:19they really don't know who they're putting out into
- 9:21the world and therefore it's interruptive of relationship development.
- 9:25So I think it's just kind of a big swirl right now,
- 9:27Kylee.
- 9:28It will sort itself out.
- 9:29I really do believe that.
- 9:31But as much as possible,
- 9:32try that one on one time with each of them.
- 9:35I think that will go a long way.
- 9:37And,
- 9:37you know,
- 9:38be mindful
- 9:39that
- 9:39certain kids are just going to
- 9:42need to feel more.
- 9:43validated.
- 9:44So,
- 9:44you could also use esteem building and encouragement phrases with
- 9:47her more than you would with your other kids,
- 9:49because that will naturally give her more confidence as well.
- 9:52So you can support the therapeutic process
- 9:54by using esteem building and encouragement as home as much as possible with her.
- 9:59Kylee,
- 9:59thank you so much for the email,
- 10:00and I hope that that is helpful for all of you because,
- 10:03you know,
- 10:03most people have more than one child.
- 10:05I know I'm the outlier with an only kid.
- 10:07So,
- 10:07for those of you with big families and lots of kids,
- 10:10sibling rivalry and jealousy is pervasive always.
- 10:14So,
- 10:14Kylee,
- 10:15I appreciate the email.
- 10:15I love y'all.
- 10:16I hope you have a great week.
- 10:17We'll talk again soon.
