- 0:13Speaker 2: learn a lot, brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:16Speaker 2: of Electrical Workers. Start with a job and with the
- 0:18Speaker 2: career IBW Local sixty eight. It's Leggy Well yeh yeh
- 0:24Speaker 2: on Altitude Sports Radio five jet Legwell time on a
- 0:32Speaker 2: SKA Friday. Excellent read this week at ESPN dot com.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Leggy going in depth on bo Nix and the off
- 0:41Speaker 2: season that he had. Leggy what kind of off season
- 0:46Speaker 2: has this been for bow and how do we expect
- 0:50Speaker 2: to see this manifest hopefully into a big step forward
- 0:54Speaker 2: for a second year quarterback?
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Nate, I guess I was most intrigued to see,
- 1:00Speaker 3: like most rookies, what will you do with your first
- 1:03Speaker 3: sort of real NFL off season. You know, he wasn't
- 1:07Speaker 3: prepping for the draft, He wasn't coming out of spring
- 1:11Speaker 3: football and going into the you know, the fall camp
- 1:17Speaker 3: at a college. So I was intrigued just as how
- 1:21Speaker 3: he approached it. And you know, I think, like most guys,
- 1:26Speaker 3: they discover throwing less is a component in there, and
- 1:31Speaker 3: I think physically that was a big thing for him.
- 1:35Speaker 4: You know, I asked him about it.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I've talked to other people about it because I had
- 1:40Speaker 3: been told he dialed back on purpose. And I think,
- 1:44Speaker 3: you know, some of that is, ah, just kind of
- 1:48Speaker 3: what he's been through in six years of college football
- 1:52Speaker 3: and the rest of it, you know, so long in
- 1:54Speaker 3: college football. But I think overall, I think it's just
- 1:58Speaker 3: about him getting a comfort level with the job. You know,
- 2:03Speaker 3: you're you're the centerpiece of an NFL organization, whether you
- 2:08Speaker 3: like it or not, whether you want it or not,
- 2:10Speaker 3: it's a fact. And you know, every player you talk to,
- 2:14Speaker 3: it doesn't matter what their resume says.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:18Speaker 3: They sort of all start right now that this is
- 2:20Speaker 3: Bo Nixon's team. And you know that's how the NFL works.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Uh uh, you know, unless you know there's just somebody
- 2:29Speaker 3: on the other side of the ball so dominant or
- 2:31Speaker 3: another position, it's the quarterbacks team.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, even with the defensive player of the year right
- 2:37Speaker 2: there on your roster. And you know you meant you
- 2:40Speaker 2: mentioned the the the step forward that he that he
- 2:43Speaker 2: is taking in terms of his place within the pecking
- 2:46Speaker 2: order of the franchise. What has he done this offseason
- 2:51Speaker 2: to kind of put himself in that position? Because I
- 2:52Speaker 2: do think he's a guy that wants it, and based
- 2:55Speaker 2: on what I read in your piece, like he's acting
- 2:58Speaker 2: like he wants it. How has he's sort of taken
- 3:00Speaker 2: that command of this organization.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Well, I think it's interesting.
- 3:04Speaker 3: He's you know, he's obviously done his homework and listens
- 3:08Speaker 3: when he talks to people. You know, because Hufanga said
- 3:12Speaker 3: it yesterday, you know he or Evan Ingram rather said
- 3:17Speaker 3: it yesterday when he came on his visit, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 3: bow Nicks came to meet him for lunch. You know,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you talk to other guys, who's the first player, one
- 3:27Speaker 3: of the first players to text you after you signed?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Bow Nicks is one of the first players. So he's
- 3:32Speaker 3: he's obviously paid attention. And when he's been watching other leaders,
- 3:37Speaker 3: he respected or asked other people about it, because I
- 3:42Speaker 3: think it's just things like that in house that that
- 3:47Speaker 3: make you a leader. And I think the biggest thing
- 3:50Speaker 3: he does is he does it by example more than
- 3:55Speaker 3: you know, shouting. You're not seeing him on the practice
- 3:59Speaker 3: field in between drills very often doing the old you know,
- 4:03Speaker 3: come on, let's have a great drill type of thing.
- 4:05Speaker 3: It's more about everyone knows he was the first one
- 4:09Speaker 3: in there. Everyone knows he did every amount of homework
- 4:13Speaker 3: he needed to do.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Everyone knows he's prepared.
- 4:17Speaker 3: He just doesn't by showing people he's he's accountable for
- 4:24Speaker 3: what he's saying when he when he does talk to people.
- 4:27Speaker 5: All Right, what are you gleaning from these training, these
- 4:30Speaker 5: mini camp practices, the OTAs, whatever it is. We watch
- 4:33Speaker 5: just day mini camps next week, just to be official
- 4:35Speaker 5: about it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But what do you see in there, Jeff?
- 4:38Speaker 5: Because to me, I told Nate yesterday, I think he
- 4:41Speaker 5: kind of felt the same way. This in the hot
- 4:42Speaker 5: take hot take kind of camp. Right, we're not out
- 4:45Speaker 5: there this roster, most of it's returned. Guy's roles seem
- 4:51Speaker 5: pretty clearly defined. So what are you taking away from
- 4:54Speaker 5: the proceedings out there?
- 4:56Speaker 1: From what you've seen?
- 4:58Speaker 3: You know, you know, and you'll over the years. I'm
- 5:00Speaker 3: big on rotations this time of year. I want to
- 5:03Speaker 3: see what they think of the depth chart, and just
- 5:08Speaker 3: by how they rotate in and out, you can see
- 5:10Speaker 3: what they think of the depth chart. And a big
- 5:15Speaker 3: thing for me, it doesn't move the needle for maybe
- 5:18Speaker 3: a lot of folks. But I like to see where
- 5:20Speaker 3: they're moving the rookies in and out of some of
- 5:24Speaker 3: these looks. And you know, like yesterday Kean Richardson got
- 5:30Speaker 3: a little more run than he did, you know, a
- 5:33Speaker 3: week ago. So it just tells you, you know, kind
- 5:36Speaker 3: of how they're thinking in the moment. And you know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: I tell people all the time, if there's one conclusion
- 5:43Speaker 3: to draw from these types of things, it's that you
- 5:46Speaker 3: shouldn't draw too many conclusions. I keep an eye on
- 5:50Speaker 3: the rotations because that tells you where people are in
- 5:54Speaker 3: the pecking order at that moment. Doesn't mean anything in September,
- 5:58Speaker 3: doesn't even mean anything in August, but it just shows you.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Where people are right now.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And if rookies have moved up in that, that tells
- 6:07Speaker 3: you those guys are are preparing and doing well with
- 6:09Speaker 3: the installs. But a lot of these practices, and you
- 6:13Speaker 3: know you've seen, I mean, it's very specific game situations
- 6:17Speaker 3: broken down to very small details. You know, they'll do
- 6:22Speaker 3: third and eight plays, you know, repetitively, they'll do second
- 6:25Speaker 3: and eight, you know, repetitively.
- 6:28Speaker 4: You know, it's just a lot of.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Small installs that they want to see where they're at
- 6:35Speaker 3: with a certain grouping of plays.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You know what is.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Interesting because you bring up the rookies and one of
- 6:39Speaker 5: the guys that caught my mind my eye yesterday. First off,
- 6:42Speaker 5: I told everybody he's got a proper number on so
- 6:44Speaker 5: that makes me happy. But I thought he might be
- 6:46Speaker 5: a tight end because how big he is, and that's
- 6:48Speaker 5: Adie jo Keen Davis. He made a nice catch along
- 6:50Speaker 5: the sideline of LA He came back to the ball
- 6:52Speaker 5: a little bit as mentioning to Nate, and Nate brought
- 6:55Speaker 5: up a great point, especially with how many people are
- 6:57Speaker 5: on the roster back, is there even really a receipt
- 7:00Speaker 5: were slat open on this roster right now?
- 7:03Speaker 4: I don't see it.
- 7:04Speaker 3: You know, you figure they keep you start keeping five
- 7:07Speaker 3: and you get to that number pretty fast, and.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I don't think there's much room in any position.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Frankly, you know, we know John ay Barron's gonna play,
- 7:18Speaker 3: we know Harvey's gonna play. I think Richardson will make
- 7:21Speaker 3: the roster because he was He was probably my best
- 7:26Speaker 3: special teams.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Player on the board, let alone what he can do
- 7:29Speaker 4: on defense.
- 7:30Speaker 3: So it's gonna be a hard go for some of
- 7:34Speaker 3: these guys and I think that's why you didn't see
- 7:37Speaker 3: the really big signing bonus undrafted free agents here, because
- 7:44Speaker 3: agents and players both look at this roster and it's
- 7:48Speaker 3: gonna be a hard one to crack if if you know,
- 7:52Speaker 3: they didn't have a vision for you the moment they
- 7:55Speaker 3: they brought you in the building.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Talking to Jeff Legweld here on a Friday afternoon, Leggy,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I know we shouldn't make a whole bunch out of
- 8:03Speaker 2: highlights that you're watching in OTAs. That's that I'm gonna
- 8:07Speaker 2: make a big deal out of a couple of highlights
- 8:09Speaker 2: from OTAs, specifically the splash plays of the two practices
- 8:13Speaker 2: that have been open, there was a similarity there.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:17Speaker 2: One was a back shoulder to Courtland Sutton last week.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The other was a throw to Valet that he high
- 8:23Speaker 2: pointed yesterday. But both of them are you know, they
- 8:27Speaker 2: would fall into that category of the throw outside the numbers.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That has to be a next step for bow Knicks.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Do you think that's an emphasis right now? Like, I
- 8:39Speaker 2: don't know if Bo's ever going to be great at
- 8:41Speaker 2: that throw, but if he can become serviceable at that throw,
- 8:45Speaker 2: that is just another weapon that this offense needs. To
- 8:49Speaker 2: have in the tool belt.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Well, I think it's an admission on the Broncos part.
- 8:54Speaker 3: They know it's coming. They know people are really good.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I mean, you're as a defense, you're not to take
- 9:00Speaker 3: away everything in the middle of the fields.
- 9:02Speaker 4: It's impossible.
- 9:03Speaker 1: But those crossers, you know they're coming.
- 9:06Speaker 3: You know that people are gonna try to pinch him
- 9:09Speaker 3: outside the numbers, because look, they tried it the other
- 9:12Speaker 3: way and he finished with twenty nine touchdowns. So and
- 9:17Speaker 3: I think he knows, you know, I often talk about
- 9:21Speaker 3: his self awareness as a quarterback. He's very good at
- 9:24Speaker 3: sort of studying and seeing, Okay, you know, I think
- 9:28Speaker 3: people are coming at me from this. I also think
- 9:31Speaker 3: that's why Sean Payton has been very He likes big
- 9:35Speaker 3: framed receivers anyway, but he's been very cognizant of giving
- 9:41Speaker 3: bon Nicks big physical targets who can make those contested
- 9:46Speaker 3: catches on the boundary. I mean, hell, that's why Pat
- 9:49Speaker 3: Bryant was a draft pick around and a half or
- 9:52Speaker 3: two rounds better here than he would have been for
- 9:55Speaker 3: a lot of other teams, because his one of his
- 9:58Speaker 3: best skills is big physical receiver in a contested catch mode.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So they're building things, and in sort of you can
- 10:08Speaker 3: see it already in these workouts. They're working toward things
- 10:11Speaker 3: they think they're gonna get, and you know that's a
- 10:15Speaker 3: good thing to do if you're them. I would also
- 10:18Speaker 3: put a nice little wheel route Harvey had yesterday on
- 10:21Speaker 3: a little real too, because you're going to see that
- 10:25Speaker 3: about thirty times this year, I think at minimum.
- 10:29Speaker 4: All right, JK.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Dobbins, what do you think happens there? Nothing, no big
- 10:32Speaker 5: splash signing out the door. And what is the situation
- 10:34Speaker 5: with Tim? Tyler was quick to point out to me
- 10:37Speaker 5: that he's a tender player for the Chargers.
- 10:40Speaker 1: What's all the deal there?
- 10:41Speaker 4: You don't see it very often.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's you know, it's one of those situations where they'd
- 10:46Speaker 3: like to keep him, but it's a very crowded backfield.
- 10:50Speaker 3: They've they've added a lot of players there, so you
- 10:54Speaker 3: don't often see the unrestricted tender.
- 10:57Speaker 4: But that's what they've done.
- 10:58Speaker 3: He's basically got to right before Cam July twenty second,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I think July twenty second or twenty third, he has
- 11:07Speaker 3: to sign with another team or the Chargers have his
- 11:10Speaker 3: exclusive negotiating rights after that. So tells me no, one's
- 11:16Speaker 3: hit his number to this point. But if you are
- 11:19Speaker 3: a team and you're interested in him, you're gonna wait
- 11:22Speaker 3: close to that deadline or he's stuck with negotiating with
- 11:27Speaker 3: the Chargers at that point. So if he is signed
- 11:31Speaker 3: by the Broncos or anyone else, unless somebody changes their
- 11:35Speaker 3: mind at this point, and the Broncos could certainly do that,
- 11:39Speaker 3: I'm not saying they wouldn't, but obviously no one's hit
- 11:43Speaker 3: his number, but that numbers probably coming down the closer
- 11:46Speaker 3: to the deadline it gets.
- 11:48Speaker 2: That's Jeff Legwall and everybody got the latest on the JK.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Dobbins thing right there. Jeff Legwall brought to you by
- 11:53Speaker 2: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Start with a job and with a career. Leggy, Andy
- 12:01Speaker 2: and I have been sort of kicking around this week,
- 12:03Speaker 2: some stuff going on around the rest of the AFC West,
- 12:06Speaker 2: kind of looking where Denver sits right now in the
- 12:08Speaker 2: pecking order. And look, there's there's three very playoff worthy
- 12:12Speaker 2: teams in this division, without a doubt, and then there's
- 12:17Speaker 2: the Raiders. But I find the Raiders very interesting this year. Jeff, Like,
- 12:23Speaker 2: how much better are the Raiders, who, without a doubt
- 12:27Speaker 2: have a flawed roster and they've been beset by injuries
- 12:30Speaker 2: in recent years. But how much does having an actual
- 12:34Speaker 2: competent head coach and an actual competent quarterback in Geno Smith?
- 12:39Speaker 2: How much does that elevate what we know is a
- 12:42Speaker 2: subpar roster. But is that enough to make the Raiders
- 12:46Speaker 2: kind of dangerous?
- 12:48Speaker 3: Well, of course, I think people in Denver you don't
- 12:51Speaker 3: have to look very far with how much did it
- 12:53Speaker 3: mean to the Broncos with the hired John Fox?
- 12:56Speaker 4: You know how much did it mean when they hired
- 12:58Speaker 4: Sean Payton? You know?
- 13:00Speaker 3: Oh, you you take the roster you had, and simply
- 13:03Speaker 3: by knowing what you're doing, you know, you elevate things
- 13:08Speaker 3: and you you know, you eliminate Look, the margins for
- 13:11Speaker 3: air are so small in the NFL, it doesn't take
- 13:14Speaker 3: much to make a big difference. If you avoid sort
- 13:19Speaker 3: of doing damage to yourself. I mean, that's an enormous thing.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Mike Shanahan would talk to me about it all the time.
- 13:27Speaker 3: But how significant is simply avoiding damage to yourself makes
- 13:33Speaker 3: you in the playoff mix? And they will have that.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I mean, you can say Pete Carroll did this or
- 13:41Speaker 3: did that was boring on offense, whatever you want to say.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Those they were in the mix, you know all the time,
- 13:48Speaker 3: simply by the how they approach things. And you know,
- 13:53Speaker 3: I think Geno Smith has proven, you know, he can
- 13:55Speaker 3: get things done if framed in the right kind of offense,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and he will be framed in the right gun.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Offense's got two stars. I mean, we're assuming Kent he
- 14:04Speaker 2: is going to be a star in Bowers is. I mean,
- 14:07Speaker 2: we were joking about this yesterday. Bowers is the best
- 14:09Speaker 2: wide receiver in the entire AFC West right now, and
- 14:12Speaker 2: he plays tight ends. So yeah, there's good weapons around him.
- 14:15Speaker 2: By the way, I just I wrote this down. Everybody
- 14:18Speaker 2: get this tattooed on your arm. Simply by knowing what
- 14:21Speaker 2: you're doing, you elevate things. Jeff Legwall, That's easy, old,
- 14:28Speaker 2: that's right.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Some would say, I have no idea what I'm talking
- 14:32Speaker 4: about there.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Kind of makes sense to me simply by knowing what
- 14:38Speaker 2: you're doing, which feels like a low bar for an
- 14:41Speaker 2: NFL head coach. And yet it's astounding how many of
- 14:44Speaker 2: them can't do that.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Jeff, why didn't you give that the fox eat the
- 14:47Speaker 5: paint on the walls with all the other stuff he
- 14:49Speaker 5: put up there.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Huh, that's similar to skins on the wall.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Will Will Dun's better than Will said.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I think I remember that. It's a bigger, better, faster,
- 15:01Speaker 4: stronger lead. You know.
- 15:03Speaker 2: That's what I've heard. He's Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN dot com.
- 15:06Speaker 2: His latest on bo Nicks is terrific and you should
- 15:10Speaker 2: read it right now.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Leggie will talk to you Monday. Thanks man, Thank care.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Vollas, we'll see it.
