- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Welcome to week two of the 2021 Section Four Football Spring Season.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Our guest football analyst today is Andrew Laguerre.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: He's a sports writer for one of my old newspaper that I grew up with.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: That's the Elmire Star Gazette.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Welcome, Andrew.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Hey Tim, it's good to be here.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Glad to have you.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Andrew is no uh stranger to Section 4 football.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: He was a student athlete at Odessa Montour and played for Coach Myers there.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: And uh so he knows a little bit about the Section 4 football in this area.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: We're glad to have him.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Today Andrew and I are gonna be teamed up and we're gonna go through the first quarter of our Cover Four podcast.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: That's where Andrew and I will be discussing the upcoming matchups for this weekend.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: And then Andrew will take the second quarter and he's gonna review 11 player and eight player teams in his area of expertise, which is the western portion of section four.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: But before we get going, there's a couple of uh accomplishments I'd like to share with you.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Uh right now, in the top section four teams in wins, this is over the last 50 years, with their win last weekend, Shenango Forks is at 400.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: In second place is Walton with 342, Tioga at 330, and Union Indicat at 303 wins.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: And what that really represents is the stability and the longevity and the consistency of those particular programs.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: So it's no surprise to see those particular programs atop the winner list for section four.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: That's great accomplishment.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: One other accomplishment was with Susquehanna Valley with their win last week, tied Cortland for seventh place on the win streak with 27.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Now you say Cortland.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Well, Cortland used to compete in section four.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: They're now in section three, but now Susquehanna Valley is tied with them, and they're going to look this weekend to jump past them, hopefully.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: So now we'll get right into week two, which will be played March 26th and 27th.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: The first game up will be Binghamton High School at Maine Endwell.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: This I expect to really see a close game, uh, although Binghamton was handled pretty pretty uh handedly by Susquehanna Valley last week, and Maine Anwell beat a very young, and I mean a very young festival team.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: So that's one of those backyard games you can pretty much throw the uh records out, and they just absolutely play.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: And it's a great thing that we get to do that.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Now, the next game up is what we call the Hogan Bowl.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: This is Windsor at Shenango Forks.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: It's Tim Hogan against Dave Hogan.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: And this has always been labeled the Hogan Bowl.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: And uh again, this is probably even more heightened of throwing the records out when you have uh siblings going against each other.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Uh Susquehanna, or I'm sorry, Shenango Valley.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, South.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Shenango Forks last week was their typical Shenango Fork self against Susquehanna Valley.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Now, Susquehanna Valley played tough initially, but Susquehanna Chenango Forks was just tough and they came out on top of that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Windsor took it on the chin against the Dorwich Purple Tornado.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: They looked to bounce back and get their first win.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Next game up is Shenango Valley against Johnson City.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: And with Johnson City, Coach Place had his first win uh against a very improved UE last week, and he's looking to extend that out.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: But it's not going to be an easy walk.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Coach Nick Sarandi is doing a great job there with Shenango Valley, and he and he's they played tough against uh their rivalry, Shenango Forks, last week.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So I hope that will be a good game as well.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is the second week that coach Ford, Mike Ford, uh his Susquehanna Valley team has played another team that's coached by Mike, and that's Norwich, and it's Mike Christie.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Um, so I I think this will be a uh a great example of two young and upcoming coaches with good solid programs in section four.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And again, that's Susquehanna Valley at Norwich.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Expect that to be a really good game.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Now, here's one of the big rivalries in section four Vestal at UE.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: And that's really all you have to say.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: This is a throw out the record type of a uh situation, and both teams are coming off tough losses and seeking their first win.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Uh Deposit Hancock, they're at Del High, and Deposit Hancock did not play last week, and Del High was shut out by Whitney Point.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, Del High shut out Whitney Point.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: So uh Deposit Hancock is looking to get on the in the winner's column in this game.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Next game up is Harpersville, Afton, and they're at Sydney.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Harpersville Afton did not play last week either, and Sydney uh lost to Newark Valley pretty handily.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And uh that should be also a good game.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Walton against Whitney Point, and both of these teams are looking for their first win.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Walton was shut out by O'Neill, and Whitney Point was shut out by Delhi.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: So both teams are looking not only to score points, but to get their first win.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Oneana at Bainbridge Guildford.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: And Oneana had a real strong outing last week, but game Bainbridge Guildford did not play last week.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure they're excited to get their first game jitters out and get a chance to play.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Waverly and Owego, coached by two of the the uh top coaches in our section four.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: That's Coach Miller at Waverly and Coach Verkler at Owigo.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Both are looking for their first win after playing two very good teams last week and playing them very tough.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Next game up is Corning at Newark Valley.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Now, some people might look at this game and say, well, the Newark Valley may not have a chance.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: That's not necessarily the case.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Corning had a strong win against horseheads, but Newark Valley played a similar game against Sydney where they were extremely strong.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: So look for Newark Valley to make an excellent showing here and either give Corning more that they as much as they can handle, or they could possibly win that game.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Tyoga's got a bye this week.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: And then Horseheads is up against Elmira.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: That's an old classic rival game there.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: And horseheads and coach Hillman are looking for their first win.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Elmira beat a very determined Weego team last week.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: And uh unfortunately, uh Watkins Glen, Odessa Montour, and Ithaca are in a 10-day quarantine after an Ithaca player tested positive for COVID-19.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: So that's also going to affect two other teams as well.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Watkins Glenn Odessa Monteur versus Dryden won't be played, and Ithaca High School versus Groton is canceled.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: So that's a review of your 11-player teams.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Now we'll jump into your eight-player teams.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: We've got Oxford, Oxford at Green, and Oxford will be playing their first game and Green's first ever season at uh player eight.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: They played a close game against Unadilla Valley last week.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: So expect good things there.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: And this really, I haven't seen an eight-player game, although I was under contract the coach in the arena football league, uh when it never happened.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: But that's very similar at eight players on a field.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: It looks to me like it would be a very exciting game, not only to watch, but I if they had it when I was younger, I'd love to play in eight-player on a regular size field to just have so much room.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Next game up is Unidilla Valley at uh Unitagle Franklin.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Um Unitagle beat uh Green last week, which is an up-and-coming uh new team to the eight-player division.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: And uh Unitigo Franklin lost to Cancer, uh Kander Spencer Venetton, who's playing really extremely good football as well.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Thomas Edison is going at Notre Dame, and uh Thomas A.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Edison lost a lopsided game to Newfield last week.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: So they're looking to rebound.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: And also coach, the new coach at Notre Dame, uh Coach Tom Strubble is looking for his first win.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: And they were held scoreless against Moravia.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: And uh the next game is Lansing at Cander Spencer Vanetton.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Lansing won a close one over Trumansburg, and then Lansing has been playing in this division for quite a few years now.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: And I believe that they were the first uh eight-player champion uh a few years back when they first were in that division.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: And Cander Spencer Benetton literally this season, just almost just before the season started, just moved to the eight-player division recently.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: And they had a real strong outing in their in their first game against Unitinko Franklin.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Moravia at Trumansburg, Moravia started off in a uh in a strong fashion by dominating Notre Dame last week, and Trumansburg lost a close one to Lansing.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: And then Newfield has a bye.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: That takes us through really uh the first quarter of our podcast.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Now I'd like to go into the second quarter, and this is where Andrew is going to give us a review of the teams of uh in section four in the Western Division.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Take it away, Andrew.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, I think this year or this spring, it starts with corning.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: And uh uh as you touched on last week, 55-28 over horse heads, and corning offensively uh runs a I'm I'm sorry, I corning against horse head.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Corning's got Norwick Valley at home Friday, which I'll be at that one.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: But uh uh, you know, so when you talk Corning, you talk that double wing offense, and it's a really well-coached program uh with George McKellas head coach, Mike Johnson Jr.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: runs the offense, uh, and a lot of other good people there.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Um, so I mean if if you're looking at the top team, uh right now you got to say Corning, which uh won the section four double-A title uh last season.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I was up there in Bressel.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: They were uh a last second or thirty field goal away from advances of state semifinals that year.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: So a lot of those kids are back to, you know, they got Max Freeman, who's a seven uh wing back, they got Justin Rodriguez, uh a lot of a lot of talent in Corning.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: And those kids have been one of those schools of focus since you know the uh last summer, last fall.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: They they were kids who really wanted the season to happen.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: And when it did happen, they they're ready to use that one.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, as for horse heads, uh they're coming to Elmyra on Saturday.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think we'll learn a lot about both those teams when we see that game.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, one kid that Almira football started in 2011.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Before that, we had Elmira Free Academy and Elmira South Side.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Now we have the Elmira Express.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Horseheads have played Elmira 14 times, never beat him.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Um, horseheads have some talent.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: You know, Riley Loomis tours ACL uh before last season, you know, in that pre-season season scrimmage.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: He didn't play at all.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: He's back, he ran for I think uh uh 130 or so last week.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, he's back and healthy, and great to see Riley's a great kid.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I did featuring him after he tours ACL is a really talented baseball player as well.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I I did see Elmira last week 42 to 14 over a weigho.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Awego five turnovers, uh and it you know, four in the first half, and three of them led right to Elmire touchdowns.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: So a weego physically, I thought you know, they did a pretty good job with Elmira, but those turnovers are too much to overcome.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And you know, one thing you look for out of Elmire, they offer him the double wing because Mike Johnson used to coach there, and uh, you know, they they've got a great coach in Jimmy McCauley and his staff.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, Elmire didn't have a lot of big plays last week, but you know, they did a good job moving the ball on a consistent basis.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, Jamal Howard, you know, uh ran for right around 130, and they've got some other good backs.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know that they have the breakaway backs they've had in the past with you know the likes of Eli Thomas and uh you know Jerry McPeak, but uh you know they've still got some good skill people, and you know the offensive line is always well coached and they always push people around.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Um you know, the the other game I covered last week was Moravia against Elmire Notre Dame, a frigid Thursday night.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: It was you know, it's a little bit different experience with the late winter slash spring football.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So uh, you know, like you mentioned, Tom Strubble is a new coach at Notre Dame.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: He takes over from Mike Daluiso, who for my money is as good as it gets in terms of coaching.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, Mike's a great, a great guy as well.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: And that you know, certainly they miss Mike, but you know, they got Tom Strubble, they got an experienced assistant in Joe Davis.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Um so we'll we'll see if they can bounce back.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Uh but you know, when they played Moravia, they had uh certainly Moravia had the edge on the line of scrimmage in a 34-0 in a you know, eight-man football, it's not easy to set someone out.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: You know, you're gonna give up the big play here and there.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And you know, the another school, you know, nearby, and as you mentioned, they play Thomas Edison on Friday.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Edison had a had a rough game.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: They gave up 74 to Newfield, which is a quality program in what last season.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, I think this is one of those quintessential both teams are looking to bounce back, you know, Edison in Notre Dame, and you know, we'll see what happens with that one.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it and you had you know mentioned Lock and Odessa Montor, obviously not playing this week.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: That's another team I cover.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Uh hoping to get a chance to get out to one of their games this year.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they put up 41 on double A Italy last week.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: And that's another team that you know we got a lot of double wing in this part of the uh part of the section.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And that you know, there's a correlation between these programs.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: You know, coaches have come and gone at uh you know, from one to the next, and you know, brought along some of their ideas.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, the bottom line is it works.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Uh uh some you know, Owen Schultz really good back at Walk and Odessa, and they they got some other talented kids in that backfield.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: But uh Trevor Holland, the head coach, was really high on the way the offensive line performed against Ithaca.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, we with COVID, we don't know what's gonna happen, but let's let's hope we get Walk and Odessa back in in the fold in a couple weeks and see what they can do.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: You know like last year for uh we had uh broadcast the Wacas Gleto Dustin Montur Susquehanna Valley game, and I could see that backfield for Wacas Gleno de Sumantur was a very young backfield last year, and they had they done they did a really excellent job of playing against probably one of the better defenses in Susquehanna Valley.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: And I know that uh they are definitely going to be strong there coming back.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: And anytime you combine two schools like that, although they're they're considered smaller schools, I think I know that they always played really good football at their level.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: I grew up watching Odessa Montour.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: My dad played at Watkins Glen.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I understand those programs and what goes into those.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: On another note, I think there's some teams in the eight-player division that are glad that Newfield has a bye this weekend so that they don't have to face that particular program because you don't just put up 74 points by happenstance.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: You uh you really got to have it together because there's only so much time on the clock.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: So they must have been scoring almost every possession and maybe even on defense as well.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And uh I think this is a case this season, too, where you're gonna look at the teams with experience are gonna be a lot better off than the teams that are bringing up JB kids or more younger kids, and Newfield's got some experience uh at the skill positions, and you know, the result of you know, 74-point output.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, I did want to touch you mentioned Susquinavale's Valley playing Watkins OM, and I don't think I saw SC last season, but the year before the quickness and the sure tackling of that team, and I I assume it's the same, just is as impressive as I've ever been with the defense, just in terms of getting to the ball so quickly.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: And that's a tough team to play against offensively.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember watching them play, I think it was their first championship up at the dome.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: And um just the way you're right, the way they tackled, but it was it wasn't just getting there and making the play.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: They were extremely violent when they got to the point of contact, and it looked almost like a a small college like Division III team with some of those student athletes, the way that they played and technique-wise, and and the other teams that they were playing had a lot of good student athletes, as as they do throughout section four.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: But what separates you a lot of times is obviously your mindset going in and where you are there, but also in technique.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: And they were very well coached and from a technique standpoint.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: That's what you see with a lot of these teams, and it's more uh prevalent when it doesn't happen at the eight-player level, because a mistake there will probably get you scored on.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Whereas at the 11 player level, maybe there's somebody that can fill in or or or or catch up and make the tackle, but you don't have that luxury in the eight-player division.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Uh no, definitely not.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, we we're trying to think, uh, you know, the first season of eight-man football, Lansing and Elmire Notre Dame dominated.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And I think it says a lot for how far eight-man football has come that we see teams like Newfield uh coming along, and it you know, it it feels like they've they found their niche, you know, with eight-man football.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Which a lot of times it comes down to to numbers.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And when we are dealing with 11-man football for some of these programs, you know, it wasn't necessarily always about talent.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: It was just about, you know, you have 17, 18 kids, and you know, kids going two ways, and it's it's a definite disadvantage.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So I think we're seeing a more of an even playing field for you know programs like Newfield, and obviously Spencer Burnett and Candor have gone to eight-man football this season for numbers reasons.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And you know, uh it's like you said last week, they they were they were impressive, and uh we'll see what they do this season.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, I think eight-man football, uh I don't know if we're done expanding in section four necessarily, but I think a lot of schools uh are seeing, yeah, this is a viable art alternative.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Let's look at is this best for what is this what's best for our school and our program based on our numbers and based on the competitiveness.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I think it's probably you know, we'll we'll probably see more teams add in the near future.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you look at strictly numbers across section four, right now we've got four teams competing at the double A division, three at single A, three in B, and we have 10 in C.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: That was 11 until Kandor Spencer Benetton just moved over to the eight player.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: So you've got again uh at the C division, you got 10.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: In the D division, you've got nine.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: And now in the eight player, you've got 11.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of ironic.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: You have eight and you know, eight, eleven, but uh that's the largest division in section four right now, and it is uh a very exciting type of football, although I haven't had a chance to see those uh games.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: I want to at some point hopefully get out and see some uh eight-player games, and it just to me it's more like not sand lot, but it's closer in terms of you've got fewer people on a similar size or same size field as you would 11, and it just it's just got to be more dynamic.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a it's a more open game, but uh I think what I've seen from year one of eight-man in the section to now is the defensive defense defenses have certainly stepped up a little bit and adjusted.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: I think that first year was a little bit tough.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: You're like, oh, 11 man to eight man, you didn't even really have templates out there to follow at a regional level.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And I know a lot of the coaches look to the national level and got some ideas on game plans and plays and all that, but I I think you know, maybe uh defenses are catching up a little bit.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: But like we said, Newfield scored 74 last last week.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I know from a coaching standpoint that your your student athletes, their technique has to be more precise, especially open field techniques, both tackling and blocking in the open field, because you you know, everything tends to happen at a higher rate of speed, plus you're you've got a lot more situations where you've got student athletes in what they call space.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: And at the snap of the ball, you've got space, you know, and in the eight player.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's a very exciting uh division and also the largest division right now in section four.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: So go ahead.
- 21:52unknown: Go ahead.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: One point I'll make you know, when I started this job and when the state tournament started, uh I'm trying to remember what.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: year it was 82 I believe eighty three someplace around there right uh I think it was a little bit later in maybe early nineties in terms of the state level but I'm sorry you're correct that was the um outside of the the section type of stuff yeah you're right that was probably early nineties but you know we we started with four classes we stand into five country we have six if you include eight man football and it and I think even the five the five class format in some sections of the state it's a little you know that it sort of has challenges because it's you know in terms of distribution and I think we're saying that a little bit with as you mentioned the way you know classes are set up and you know in section four for those who don't know we don't really have big double A's all of all of our double a's now mine are the biggest all of our double a's are uh in the small realm when you compare them to some of the bigger ones across the state in you know now we uh we're looking at Binghamton playing class A football now for instance um so it you know it's such a shifting landscape year to year in terms of classes and eight man and all that and I think we're you know just going to see more of that in the future.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Yep and it's uh just the way things are going but if you really boil it down this the student athletes hopefully will get an opportunity to play regardless of of what division it is as long as they get to play because I can I remember you look you know you turn the biological clock back and you think about going to school and not getting the opportunity to play that was just you know that's just something un unfathomable.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: So just to get the student athletes out there in the spring season uh unfortunately the seniors this is it for them but it kind of gears you up before the fall season is coming up it's almost like talking collegiately where they have spring football at a lot of institutions preparing them for the fall.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: So I I think that that is a benefit just to get out there and actually get these student athletes the ability to play the fans to cheer the coaches to coach and people to do what they like to do.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: So I think Andrew we've kind of talked this one through I really appreciate you being our guest football analyst this week.

- 25:31SPEAKER_02: It's time to ask Coach Smith today's question is from Elliot.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: I want to begin by thanking you and Roger Neal for doing such a great job broadcasting the session four football game of the week over the last seven or eight seasons.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of people who look forward to your broadcast well thank you Elliot appreciate that I know Roger or Coach Neal appreciates that as well your question a quarterback is flushed out of the pocket with no receivers open so he threw the football 20 yards downfield out of bounds nowhere near a receiver.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: He was penalized for intentional grounding and loss of down.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Why is that well intentional grounding is one of the most misunderstood high school rules and under the National Federation of State High School Association rules which most every state uses including New York intentional grounding is a foul whenever a legal forward pass is thrown into an area not occupied by an eligible receiver or when the pass is just simply thrown to prevent a loss of yardage or to conserve time.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: It is a foul and therefore no eligible receiver in the area of the pass regardless of the passer's position on the field.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: The penalty is five yards as you alluded to and yes it is a loss of down.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: The only exception to this rule is when the student athlete who receives the snap directly either hand to hand or from a shotgun formation and intentionally throws the ball forward to the ground immediately which would stop the clock thank you for your question.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: If you or someone you know would like to learn more about football don't worry we've got you covered visit cover4.com and remember that's a Roman numeral four cover4.com that'll get you there under the football courses section select one of your courses we have two courses one is called football fundamentals and that's if you know a little bit or nothing about football but want a much more thorough understanding of all aspects of football football fundamentals is your course if you already know quite a bit about football and have you know a very good understanding but want to know more or get into coaching football beyond fundamentals is a course you should take take care welcome to the fourth quarter of Cover 4 podcast we're here to discuss three games of the week today our guest is Roger Neal welcome Roger hey Tim thank you right the three games that uh Roger and I will be discussing are Binghamton at Maine and well Susquehanna Valley at Norwich and Vestal at UE go ahead Roger kick it off Tim I think um this is going to be a very interesting weekend because we got a chance to to see and hear about the teams unveiling in the first game of the season and with a shortened season every game obviously is big but at the same time I think what we're gonna see and it's only a a look at this early stage but I think we're gonna see a lot of parody I think there'll be a lot of very evenly matched teams and you'll have well based on what we saw on the first weekend some of the usual uh stalwarts continue to be just that shenanigans a huge win and south valley as well so I look at this week and the games we're kind of zeroing in on uh won Binghamton at main endwell and this will be a very interesting test for Maine and well we know the success that they've had certainly over recent years and just how strong are they this year?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: For Binghamton the question mark is they got crushed by a smaller school Susquehanna Valley opening night now how can they rebound with this are they really that weak and they ran up against a two time defending state champion albeit in class C.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: But main and well is no slouch either as we know so for Binghamton even though they're playing a little smaller schools they come right out of the gate and play two of the best teams in the state before we even get to game two.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: So a tough goal for Binghamton it'll be a measuring stick very early on for Coach Ramille's team to see how they can respond to no doubt another very good main and well team.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: So I think that's one game that'll be quite interesting another the Vestal at UE and then of course the third Susquehanna Valley and Norwich now SB and Norwich Norwich over the recent years and going back a few also has been very competitive for that but now you're again up against a team that is just tremendous and so a major stick also at this early going for Coach Christie how good is this team going to be can they keep up with a speed de Susquehanna Valley team with a high powered offense or will they fall by a big margin?
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: So again very early in the season short in the season so how early is it you know it doesn't go that long so uh that'll be a very interesting game I think and then of course the other game will be Vestal with UA you can take any records as we know over decades and just flush them because uh when these two teams play it doesn't matter there have been some epic games uh games where one side to the other was supposed to be very weak and it ends up just down to the wire we've covered a number of those types of games where they've gone right down to the closing drive or closing seconds.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: So I think anytime that bestel matches up against UE, I mean you're you're looking at a a very interesting ball game and of course uh Vestel fell to main endwell last week and uh UE dropped onto Johnson City.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: So both will look to be rebounding in this game and it's at UE and so uh again with limited spectators how much is the home field is only separated by less than a mile so basically home is home but anytime uh I think you you can get a team on your home turf uh certainly a rival it is a plus so those are the three I'm looking at they're gonna be um perhaps um you know telling foretelling the future of what these teams are all going to be able to do in this shortened season.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah I was back to the Binghamton game.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: I was surprised at how Susquehanna Valley was actually up 40 to seven at halftime in that particular game.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: And it was very it's very uncharacteristic of a Binghamton team no matter who they play they always have a lot of team speed and that is tough to defend and it it just shows you how strong Susquehanna Valley is and you know their very first game they were ready to go.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: So yes I agree that that's going to be a a real litmus test for Binghamton and also possibly for Maine and well main anwell beat a very young Vestel team last week 38 to 14 and from what I remember what I could see on the the YouTube video Vestel scored on a couple of different long broken plays or broke long runs for their score could have been you know 38 to something less than 14.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: So that's got the potential to be a very good game.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Susquehanna Valley at Norwich you've got two up and coming young coaches um both happen to be named Mike for the second week in a row Mike Ford's going against another Mike Mike Christie but I think that that's that's going to be a real uh a tough test because Norwich tends to play uh especially later in the season and I know this is not later in the season but it's you know two or three games away from the end of the season probably for some teams but they uh they tend to come on strong at the end so we'll see how they they play against uh Susquehanna Valley Vestal UE you're absolutely right Rogers throw the records out but I think and I'm not making excuses for Vestal but they've got a very very young team this year they've got a lot of student athletes that would normally be on a JV team and they had to bring them up because of low numbers and they played you know pretty well against uh main end well last week for for what they had uh going against the program like that now UE on the other hand they played a pretty solid ball game I could I saw that on YouTube it was very clear I could see pretty much the whole game and they didn't really lose that game until the end where Johnson City went down the field drove down scored and actually had kind of a pooch kick on a kickoff recovered that scored again and then up winning the game like I think it was 24 to 19.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: So UE actually had that game uh and they let that one slip away from him and it was actually coach coach place's first victory over at the with the Johnson City Wildcats so congratulations to him but I think that you did a great job picking the games Roger and I think they're all going to be really good games hopefully and something our fans get a chance to either see in person uh or be able to watch on uh YouTube or on Huddle.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Sure sure should be an exciting weekend no doubt about it absolutely thank you Roger for taking the time and uh we look forward to talking to you next week.
